Editor's
note
I wake up with the alarm buzzing at 8 am. After a quick toast with tea, I drive off to work listening to the radio. The elevator takes me to the office where my day begins with reading emails and making phone calls. I take a brief pause for lunch and my dabba is heated in the microwave. At the end of the day, I hit the gym for a work out and then head home to unwind with dinner and favourite TV shows recorded on my set top box. Weekends are spent hanging out with my buddies, playing video games, partying and travelling. During all this, I post updates on Facebook, tweet away and take some Instagram photos for Pinterest. Compare all this to the time of Adam and Eve where survival was the biggest challenge, not which music system one should buy! Technology is everywhere. The very magazine you are reading has been created with the help of computers, put through many incredible processes in machines, transported through various channels and finally delivered as a physical product. I’m sure that you, like me, get palpitations every time your smartphone is out of sight. I can’t think of a single day that I would be comfortable without any of the above. Technology is constantly evolving and subtly shaping the way we live. That is why we have decided to dedicate our cover story this month to the fabulous world of technology. There are some brilliant and innovative devices arriving this year. Apple’s iTV and iWatch will revolutionise such day-to-day gadgets like the television and the wristwatch, while Google Glass will transform the way you look at the world. Smartphones are also evolving, while the apps that make them ‘smarter’ are not far behind either. But with technology comes distraction and this distraction takes the form of procrastination. But fret not, we don’t lecture you on its perils; rather we tell you why you must procrastinate. If your favourite procrastination activity is listening to music, you’ll love our article on the best music festivals in the country that you can visit in the coming months. If you’d rather stay indoors, ponder over this question – can a straight man and a gay man be friends? In this issue we dispel some myths you may have heard regarding this relationship, so be ready for a surprising answer. Above everyone, I love and value my mom the most. I’m sure you hold your mother too in high regard. Let’s all make it special for the person that made you possible in this world on Mother’s Day. Live, laugh and love...

irla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani has successfully deployed Cisco TelePresence videoconferencing and Cisco WebEx technologies. This will benefit its 11,000 students and 700 teachers. Through this technology, BITS will conduct interactive lectures with international experts and workshops in real-time and record lectures for future reference.
ccording to a study, less than 5% of India’s 3,56,000 engineering and technology graduates are suitable for jobs in multinationals like Google and 50% remain unemployed or find ‘very small jobs’. The study – carried out by a technology consultancy firm, Knowledgefaber – also says that IT capability is concentrated amongst a handful of states and institutions across the nation. In short, the supply of high-quality IIT and REC graduates is far less than the demand.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME
In a new city, finding the right place to move into can be quite a challenge. Razi Shaikh lists out the options you can consider

ou’ve hit upon your dream career, the college has been finalised and you’re set to move to a new city. The numerous stay options confuse you and you’re not sure which, among the many, will suit you. The good news is that there’s an option for everyone and with a little bit of effort, you can zero down on the one most suitable for you. Here are some of the popular stay options for students:
HOSTELS FLICKR USER OH-BARCELONA.COM
OTHER
STAY OPTIONS You can move into guest houses as well. For example, in Mumbai, the YWCA International Guesthouse has facilities like WiFi, AC dining and a single AC room at the price of `2126 per month and the ISKON Guesthouse has amazing food and round the clock room service for `3395 a month for a single AC room.
RELATIVES
It’s always nice to have some relatives in the city you’re shifting to. In the early days of shifting, you’ll need all the help you can get and this is where your relatives and friends in the city will count. You can even consider staying with them (the offer usually comes from their side). Pros: It’s an option worth considering, as you get the home atmosphere and the pleasure of home-cooked food in a new city. Cons: Full-fledged freedom is something you definitely won’t get and that’s a major turn off for most people. Most people opt instead for rent apartments. RAMAKRISHNA REDDY Y, FLICKR
Hostels have been around for as long as we remember and for most of its existence, a few years of hostel life were considered to be ideal to speed up the ‘growing-up’ process. The hostel becomes the centre place of all your activities, permissible and non-permissible alike, and as former hostelites will tell you, more than the college, it’s the hostel that you’ll end up missing the most. Pros: You get the company of your classmates in the hostel and more often than not, the hostel is the
PAYING GUEST
cheapest option you can avail of. Cons: You’ll be answerable to the warden; you won’t get to be the free bird you were hoping to become. Hostel places a reasonable amount of restrictions on your freedom.
RENT APARTMENTS
Another option you can consider is moving into rented apartments and sharing them with classmates or friends to cut costs. Pros: Other than offering flexibility and independence, these apartments, depending on their location and size, can fit into almost any budget. You also have more space to yourself. Cons: Here, the question of the roommate really comes into the picture. Also, you’ll have to shoulder a lot more responsibilities. And if you live in an expensive city or town, your rent will be high, in spite of sharing. yi
The paying guest option is similar to renting an apartment, with the sole difference being that in this case, you’ll be living with a family. Two students elaborate on this option.
PAYING GUEST VS HOSTEL “At Srishti’s (Banaglore), we have the PG system. We live independently and there’s just one way things work – cooperation. PGs are better than hostels because you actually have to handle everything on your own. Hostels have so many restrictions. This place has changed me. It’s one of the best things to have happened to me. Right from grocery shopping to keeping my room clean, there’s independence in every action and activity I do. You actually know what life is like, when you’re away from home. No parental pampering and surviving on your own instincts and beliefs. ” - Ishiyeta Saxena, 18, Srishti School of Art and Design
ADJUSTING TO THE BIG CITY “Moving to a new city isn’t as easy as it sounds. People say it’s cool and all, but ‘the grass is always greener on the other side’. I witnessed it when I came to this big city (Mumbai). You do face challenges and as a paying guest, arranging for supper can sometimes turn out to be a major pain. Also, cost of living is going up in the cities and for those who don’t have hostel facilities in their college and have financial issues, this can become a major problem.” -Anurag Anand, 20, Ruia College MAY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 19

Roommate The
Agreement
Y
Having the right roommate can be the make-or-break of your time spent away from home. Here are some tips to get the best experience possible
our roommate can make a huge difference to the time you spend in your new place. You may become buddies, the best ones for that matter, or you may end up loathing each other to death. If nothing else, it’ll stay as a give-and-take cordial relationship. However, the starting premise and the defining point is that it is a relationship of convenience. Picking a roommate is usually not given much importance but many harrowing stories may convince you otherwise. Be sure to run through this checklist when you are entrusted with picking a roommate for yourself:
who’s high on hygiene and low on intoxicants. If you’re there to study, you better make sure your environment reflects that. It’s in a time like this that your friends list on Facebook can come to good use. Find out if you have a mutual friend and see what information you can glean about your prospective roommate. Having a friendly roomie always helps. However, if the friendliness extends as far as using your toothbrush without your permission, you know it’s time to put your foot down.
THE ROOMATE CHECKLIST
Handling a place yourself can be quite a challenge. Look for someone who’s ready to shoulder the responsibilities of the place equally. You do not want to always end up as the one sweeping the carpet of the living room.
If you’re the kind who expects a lot of people to come over and even stay, it’s best to let your roommate know right from the start. Your roommate may not necessarily appreciate it.
Unless you’re absolutely sure of staying with the roommate you’ve picked up, refrain from investing jointly in furniture.
Be very clear with what you can put up with and what you cannot. If you’re averse to smokers, make sure you specify that you cannot allow smoking in the communal area.
When looking out for a roommate, search for someone
Finally, much like a marriage, it can work only on the principle of cooperation. List out an agreement between the two of you and stick to it.

How
absolutely terrible can a roommate be?
LITTLE MISS MESSY
“There is this girl who’s recently joined the hostel and is in our room of five girls. She doesn’t understand the meaning of the word ‘clean’. Her table is a mess. She eats something and the wrapper will be flying all over the room. She walks into the bathroom with her dirty slippers. Basically, our shared room is always a mess because of her. Other girls in the hostel complain to the warden about the room and all five of us have to take the blame.” - Siera D’Costa, 24, Marketing Executive
WHAT’S MINE IS NOT YOURS “I had got an expensive perfume for my birthday, still remember that it was a Davidoff Cool Water from my parents. This was for my 18th birthday so it was a big deal for me and I would use it only for special occasions. My roommate had ran out of his perfume and I had offered him mine as he had a presentation and I’m just way too innocent anyway. Fast forward to a week, I reached for the perfume bottle to grab a few sprays and realised that the bottle was entirely empty. I was really upset that day. I guess it was my first lesson in personal space.” - Brian Carvalho, 22, Client Servicing Executive
FAMOUS ON-SCREEN ROOMMATE CLASHES
Two Broke Girls
Friends
The Big Bang Theory
The absurdity of Sheldon’s roommate agreement is evident in Section 7, subsection B – The shower can have at most one occupant, except in the event of an attack by water soluble aliens.
Having a naive roommate can be a problem as Chandler realised when Joey volunteered himself to be locked inside a cupboard while a thief swept their apartment clean.
For two girls trying to make ends meet, disagreements can be a big problem when Max is willing to sell cupcakes to delinquents but Caroline advises against it on moral grounds.
How I Met Your Mother
Much easier to relate to, Ted soon figured out that living with Robin would not be easy because she always forgot to restock the milk in the fridge and throw out the empty cartons.
Ted
As John and Lori witnessed in the extreme case of Ted, a really immature and crass roommate can lead to your living room being treated as a toilet. MAY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 21

IN THE LAND OF THE JUGAAD, STARTING A NEW ENTERPRISE SHOULD BE A NO-BRAINER. HERE’S ALL THAT YOU WOULD NEED TO MAKE THE CUT You’re the individual who regularly turns to Warren Buffet for investment tips, the kind who regards Steve Jobs as the innovation guru. More often than not, you find yourself surfing through the portals of Wall Street Journal. Think you have it in you to start your own business someday? Get set to slog hard and before you get going, do a checklist of the following:
22 Youth Incorporated ║ MAY 2013
22 Walk of life.indd 22
22-04-2013 18:22:31
WHAT’S THE IDEA?
Before setting up your own shop, you need to have the recipe for a successful product. A great idea, the next big thing is what you should keep in mind. Is your idea better than the rest? Is it the need of the target market? More importantly, will it click? You need to identify a given situation, thrust yourself in and make the most of it. Your idea will be the starting point of your enterprise and it’s from there that you’ll carry it forward. Case study: Introducing the iPad in the post-recession world was thought to be suicidal. But Steve Jobs knew what he was doing and the rest, as they say, is history.
HIT THE MARKET PLACE
Staying at home and idealising about your to-be-launched enterprise won’t do. You need to get out and get in touch with your target market. Their needs, their mentality and their feedback are the most essential part of your enterprise. Keeping them involved ensures brand loyalty as well. Case study: Before launching DNA in 2005, its management did a round of
surveys with consumers and also took their feedback. The final newspaper was made with the consumer’s feedback which helped in popularising the brand.
CAPITALISE!
No, we’re not referring to the muchneeded wad of green notes here; we’ll
come to that later. Once you have an idea of your enterprise in place and the analysis of the target market, you need to scout for the opportunities you can get. Let’s say, there’s a big company ‘A’ which is ruling over the market. You find that you’re in a position to offer a better product at a lower price to the market. With a proper ad campaign and low prices, you’ll be able to grab much of the share of that company. Big companies have their drawbacks and it’s in these areas in which you need to capitalize. Case study: Nokia, once the giant of the phone industry was ailing big time in 2010. It had an excess of staff, it was struggling to arrive at the right product and the right decisions. It’s here that its competitors capitalised.
MONEY MATTERS!
Goes without saying that without Vitamin ‘M’, your business would be a no-starter. Here’s the tricky part and it is here that most entrepreneurs fumble. You don’t need to have a truckload of money with you; you just need the ability to sell your idea to someone. You can always pool money from your family and friends, you can arrange for a loan. All this requires an element of risk and as an entrepreneur; you’ll be constantly doing that: taking calculated risks. Case study: At the age of 25, Warren Buffet contributed $100 from his side; the other contributions came from his family and friends. Nine years later, he had turned that $1,05,000 into Warren Buffett $26 million.
GETTING THE RIGHT PEOPLE
You simply cannot run a business on
your own; you need a hard-working and enterprising staff for that. Here you have an advantage up your sleeve already. You rarely hear anyone saying that they’re happy working for some big company. Such talented individuals are the ones you need to get on board while starting out. You’ll need all the help you can get from these people. Case study: The collective efforts of Narayana Murthy, Nandan Nilekani, N.S. Raghavan, S. Gopalakrishnan, Nandan Nilekani S.D. Shibulal, K. Dinesh and Ashok Arora led to the creation of Infosys which is considered one of the best managed companies in the world.
MARKETING
How you position your product, how your brand stands up to your competition will be vital when the consumer makes his choice. It’s not enough to have a great product; you need to market it right for people to get that. Case study: Lisa was an Apple computer that wasn’t marketed right and needless to say, ended up as one of the company’s biggest failures. yi

STARTING A START UP
Have a great business idea but don’t know how to get started? Here are some tips to help your young business blossom HOW TO PICK A PARTNER FOR YOUR STARTUP
“Pick a partner who shares your passion regarding the business. Find a partner who has different skills than you; that way you’ll complete the picture. Find someone you can really trust. It is beneficial if you and your partner have been friends – it worked for us. Also, pick young people – their ideas are fresh and they are enthusiastic and more adaptable and not afraid to take risks. When picking your core team – choose attitude over aptitude.” Sachin Parikh, co-founder, White Collar Hippie White Collar Hippie is a travel company that organises offbeat journeys and outdoor experiences.
WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL STARTUP?
“Can everyone who rides a motorcycle be called a passionate rider? Can anyone who starts a business be called a startup? Turns out often the answer is NO! And why is that? Entrepreneurs and startups are not mere businesses or businessmen, they are value creators for the eco-system they live in and that includes customers, investors, partners, employees and the society. Startups should remember the primary reason they exist and make sure all the stake holders are benefitting and growing along with its own growth, so it is important to define how value can be created to every stake holder and keep a moving target to achieve that.” Shashikiran, co-founder, Startup Festival Startup Festival is an annual event that promotes and encourages entrepreneurship in Bangalore.
HOW DO I GET FUNDING FOR MY STARTUP?
One of the preliminary hurdles start-ups face is finding capital to propel their business idea towards reality. However, a number of venture capitalists offer angel funding to young businesses. Before approaching these companies or individuals, make sure you have a well drafted business plan to offer. Also, companies choose to fund a specific type of business (such as social entrepreneurship) so make sure you look for one that supports the nature of your startup. Here are some companies to help you get started: Kae Capital – Invests in businesses that are in the early stages of development Seeders – Offers funding to technology startups based out of India Pitch India – Acts as a meeting point for both investors and entrepreneurs VentureEast – Provides venture capital to innovative businesses in any stage of development and from any sector.

_AWARENESS
SO YOU FAILED AN
EXAMINATION… Contrary to what society makes you think, marks are not the be-all and end-all of life. Pankhuri Shukla finds that high scores don’t always mean success and low scores are not indicative of failure either
I
t’s summer time! This time of the year excites students and makes them smell the scent of freedom way after 1947. But for those receiving the results of their board exams, May is a nasty horror that ruins their sleep. It’s a month, not filled with late night movies and frolic, but with late night willies and cold sweat.
PARENTS, LISTEN UP
We have all heard some parents reminisce their low grades and then laugh it off. But why does that attitude take a 360 degree turn when it’s a question of their kid’s result? Homoeopathic consultant Dr. Zubin Motafram says, “Grades and marks are a pseudo-benchmark that a kid is expected to step on so that they can be ahead in the line of many. Parents must love their children regardless of how much they score. Marks are a child’s journey, not a feeder of the parents’ egoistic hunger.’’ Marks often become the de rigueur but that heyday is shortlived – a couple of weeks, maybe? And are those couple of weeks worth letting minor obstacles crush your self-esteem?
course, at that level it’s the hardest thing to be able to manifest these lessons of life.” Scoring low is a grief that hits hard but self-deprecation is simply not the solution, is it? There’s no guarantee that scoring a 100 will bestow you with the life you wanted, nor is there a guarantee that failing can put a full stop to your prosperity. All that anxiety and pressure before the results is not in our hands sometimes, but once we land, whether on foot or butt, it’s important to decide how to go on from there.
REMEMBER THIS
There is no measure of intelligence; all we can do is try to redefine it. You cannot shield yourself from disappointment, but you can decide how miserable you want to be. This world is callous enough, why be cruel on yourself too? And when it comes to what people say, a month from now they won’t be there to scrutinise you. You failed an examination, so what? It doesn’t make you small. It makes you valiant. Only tough guys have the ability to face failure in their lives as gracefully as success. However, the rest is up to you to turn that around! yi
FAILURE CAN LEAD TO SUCCESS Nobody ever found their niche or became a pioneer and credited their report card for it. Mihir Rajurkar, an aspiring model and MBA candidate failed his 12th, took a break for a year to explore his dynamic calibre, retook his 12th, pursued BBA and was the fastest employee to get a promotion at Tommy Hilfiger! “I didn’t get through, but that gave me a chance to look beyond the horizon and do things I never did,” he says. “And all throughout, I knew I just had to make the best of now!”
MARKS ARE NO GUARANTEE

Benefits of Procrastination

ver had that feeling when a deadline is looming ominously over you and you simply cannot get motivated right till the last moment? Some people dread that feeling while others thrive on it. Regardless of how people may choose to respond to it, procrastination is a habit deeply ingrained into the human mind and many of us fight a constant battle against it to stay up to pace with time. But is it really our foe? Or are we so blinded in the mundanity of our daily
routines and deadlines that we fail to see the plethora of benefits which procrastination offers to us?
Definition of the beast
Defined as the habit of delaying something right up to the final moment, procrastination is often seen as a prime evil by the Gods of Time Management and is looked down upon in the professional sphere. In a world where deadlines define our daily tasks, it is often wise to give some thought to the old saying of ‘Take time to smell

the roses’. It is tiring when you have to meet a deadline for a project or an assignment that the human brain functions poorly to the point of being non-productive if you try forcing it too much. What is recommended is that by taking time off, you can give your mind some much-needed breathing space.
Getting high on an adrenaline rush
Idea
Active time-wasting
Among the breed of procrastinators, the most common ones happen to be active procrastinators. By purposely delaying their tasks till the final moment, they gain a variety of benefits which are well worth looking into: • Gives you time to think: Thinking about a project or a research paper passively, rather than actively forcing yourself on finishing it from the very beginning not only results in a well thought-out end-product but also a more cohesive one.
“You get to put off unpleasant tasks in favour of things you enjoy more”
- Dr Pamela Wiegartz, psychologist, Harvard Medical School, in the journal ‘Psychology Today’
• Puts you in a better state of mind: By delaying something you are consciously attempting to divert your thoughts away from it and the anxiety that comes with it. Nothing bogs down your mind’s productivity than one that’s too centered and worried about its outcome. Delaying it puts you in a much calmer state of mind which could be an ideal place for solutions that could immediately resolve or speed up the task that you had delayed. A winwin situation for both us and our mind, wouldn’t you say? • Automatic Resolution: It is a natural human tendency to always assume the worst when tasked with a herculean, nigh-impossible job. Sometimes that fear might drive you to do crazy things. But being chill and procrastinating might actually save you from all that trouble if the said task met its own resolution.
Many psychologists are of the opinion that a relaxed and reinvigorated brain performs more efficiently under pressure than a tired and exhausted one. The rush produced by adrenaline makes not only our body but also our mind work faster. Many active procrastinators are said to thrive on such a rush that last-minute completion can give. Aram Kuredjian, a final year student of California State University agrees, saying that “Instead of ceaselessly forcing myself to finish my project, I procrastinate by relaxing and doing what I enjoy, and when I get back to the same task, I’m able to do it more efficiently and quickly than it would’ve been possible before. The trick? My mind is a lot more relaxed now and can think clearer.” Perhaps as Aram states, this clarity of thought is the most essential state for human mind to achieve. One can think of it as the optimal state in which we function best. Acclaimed psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi writes in his NY Times bestseller Flow that when human mind achieves this state of optimality, people typically experience enjoyment and involvement with what they are doing – even if it happens to be a mundane task. It is important to realise that we aren’t slaves to the deadlines and our daily tasks need not define our lives. There is plenty of scope to relax and take time to enjoy whatever the present brings for you without needlessly worrying about the uncertainty of the future. Don’t fret about wasting time and putting things off. Go forth boldly! yi MAY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 27

s the world becomes increasingly accessible, choosing a part of the world to study in becomes increasingly challenging. Among the numerous beautiful and equally arresting places, where do you go? From the abundant world-class universities, where do you study? The sheer number of choices makes this decision an overwhelming one. But don’t let it get the best of you. PICK A COUNTRY
Before you say “Easier said than done!” hold your horses. Look at countries not as tourist but as study destinations. Would you invest four years for an undergraduation in the US or three years in the UK or Australia? Would you be able to do a two-year postgraduation in the US or would you rather do a one-year master’s in the UK? Apart from the degree duration, research the competency of different countries in the subject of your interest, for instance, Singapore’s facilities to study medicine, or Canada’s reputation for engineering.
WHAT’S YOUR UNIVERSITY TYPE?
Though it might differ in certain countries, broadly, universities abroad are of two kinds: city-based and campus. City universities are generally buildings scattered through the city and therefore have no campus to speak of. Campus universities are on outskirts or in the countryside and are a little bubble unto themselves.
INFORMATION FROM REAL PEOPLE
• Post your queries about universities/ course/countries at student forums and they will be answered by current, local and international students. Try www. thestudentroom.co.uk and www. internationalstudentforum.com • Get in touch with alumni or seniors from your shortlisted universities and ask them for their study experience. You will find them via universities’ alumni networks and student forums. • Talk to course directors and admission officers directly about their university. They are polite and respond promptly to emails. If you want to experience the bustle of a city and think you might have better job opportunities there, choose a city university. Keep in mind that cities are more expensive. If you want a quiet, secluded study environment, choose a campus university. Once you are more or less sure of where to go, check the accreditation of your shortlisted universities and their courses. Fake institutions are plenty and adept at duping applicants.
RESEARCH RANKINGS
Foreign universities are constantly assessed, graded and ranked under a number of criteria. Look through ranks published by QS, Times Higher Education, The Guardian, Forbes and US News. These are wellresearched and look at various factors that include student life and recruiter satisfaction, apart from academic excellence. They also rank individual departments based on their research quality and teaching staff. These rankings can also be used to check accreditations of universities. Only recognised and genuine universities are ranked.
CONSIDER YOUR TEST SCORES
Every country has a set of standardised tests that each foreign student applicant must take to be eligible for admission. In English-speaking countries, there will definitely be an English language test – either the TOEFL or the IELTS. Apart from that, there might be others, depending on what you intend to study. Common tests include SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, MCAT and LSAT. Each university has its own test score requirements, so look up universities that will accept your scores.

Expert speak Both university bodies and external trusts and grants offer financial aid. Universities offer a range of scholarships with different requirements. There are awards for outstanding students, exceptional sportsmen, those from a certain economic background, those from certain countries, for applicants to certain courses, etc. Poke around university websites to see what they offer. External scholarships are specific to certain countries and certain courses and have their own set of criteria. If you are sure that your study in a foreign university is subject to a scholarship, choose your institute accordingly.
DON’T IGNORE COURSE CONTENT
Expert speak
• Safety and crime statistics of the city, campus or region • Opportunities for part-time and fulltime work in the area for students • Student activities and support groups in the university, for instance, an Indian students’ group could be helpful in providing advice and coping with homesickness • If you can afford it, visit university campuses yourself. Almost all foreign universities have open days for prospective students to see and experience the campus first-hand
LOOK FOR FINANCIAL AID
All said and done, your primary reason to study abroad must be the subject you wish to study. A single subject is taught and studied differently in different universities. Study content and modules differ from institution to institution, as do the assessment methods. Carefully read through the course content under the same subject in different universities and choose the one that you like the best. For instance, if you wish to study creative writing, a module on critical theory might be compulsory in one place but nonessential in another, so if critical theory does not figure in your study interest, you could opt for the university that doesn’t offer it. yi
Expert speak
SOME MORE FACTORS TO CONSIDER
“The best university for any student may not be necessarily the famous ones, but those that offer the desired field of study as well as meet the other criteria important to him/her. The ranges of academic options as well as available universities are so wide that it is not possible to select the best in one go and it may take some time. Students should prioritise their criteria and shortlist the number of universities on that basis.” - Swati Salunkhe, Global Education Counsel “It is essential to focus on the most important goal you have in mind while choosing the country or university where you’d like to study. If seeking employment abroad is the goal, then research and analyse the job market and its future projections in different countries in your area and its openness to international applicants. When your primary goal is specialisation in particular subject or research, find out which universities and professors are actively engaged in the same. Their credibility at an international level would determine your long term prospects in that field.” - Jayanti Ghose, career and education consultant MAY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 31

udora Welty once said that a good snapshot stops a moment from running away. Documenting the instances of one’s life is perhaps one of the greatest needs for an individual today because that and that alone may be the way for him to go back and revisit memories. You can never relive life’s happy moments, so you choose to relive them through photographs, videos, diary documentation, et al. This brings me to weddings, which rest, to this day, as one of the grandest moments of an individual’s life. Their general perception of being lifealtering notwithstanding, weddings indeed are of great ceremonial importance. Right from the allimportant decision to get married to the planning of the D-day, the need to document and record everything that takes place before and during the ceremony is of utmost importance. The most common ways of recording a wedding today is through videography and photography, which of course, emerged much after the traditional wedding documentation of the groom penning down details of how his wedding took place (no, I am not kidding).
Wedding Photography
One of the earliest commercial uses for photography in the lives of the common people was that of wedding photography. Once photography equipment became available to enthusiasts, people would often request one photographer in the firmament to come make one picture of the bride and groom which could be cherished by the family forever. It somewhere became a living proof that the marriage that had taken place, so much so, that sitting here writing this, I can recall three Indian movies where the lead actress showns her wedding photo as proof that she is indeed married. Coming back to when and how wedding photography became as commercialised as it is today, it
can perhaps be attributed to the exponentially growing wedding market. In India, come recession or inflation, spending money on weddings is nothing short of a status symbol, and has remained so, what with more and more money being spent. And all for the one excuse, that you only get married once (in most cases). In a world where artistic photography has slowly taken to the sidelines because of lack of funding, wedding photography has only grown. Tarun Chawla, a leading wedding photographer in India says, “Wedding photography could possibly never be affected by recession, there will always be fortune at the bottom of the pyramid for people who are starting out as wedding photographers, middle class weddings for whose are good at wedding photography and high budget and destination weddings for professionals. It’s weddings and [in] India, people are always ready to spend.”
Wedding Filming
When you attended weddings as a child, you must have often heard the elders suggest the clothes you should wear, based on what would look good in the wedding video. Yes, videography in weddings was that important, maybe more. The whole idea of shooting the entire wedding possessed greater interest than photography for many, as you could play a tape and watch the entire ceremony from start to finish. It gave the attendees a very film shoot-ish vibe as they felt they had roles to play in the video that was constantly being taken.
Documentary style
In recent years, wedding photographers have started shooting in an extremely artistic manner. They capture the bride, the groom and the guests in extremely candid moments, as opposed to taking posed shots of the bride and groom. MAY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 35

This portrays them as professional models with extreme visual creativity. Photographers do not shy away from adding their own touch of creativity with some post processing. Simple and old-school presentations are just not fun to watch any more, so the shift to a more realistic portrayal is definitely here to stay. With wedding filming too, there has been an increase in the rise of artistic cinematography. With cinematographers like The Wedding
How to build a career as a wedding photographer/ videographer If you wish to kickstart a career as either a photographer or a cinematographer at weddings, do remember these crucial pointers: Build a portfolio: Nobody will start giving you assignments at the very start. You must be invited to weddings. Make it a point to visit, offer to shoot for free, and give them the wonderfully made pictures. It is highly possible that a probable client will observe you and ask for your services at his niece’s/ daughter’s/sister’s wedding. If you take
Filmers, they believe in taking interviews of the bride and the groom, they introduce lovely background music, and take aesthetic and creative shots of the entire event. It is edited and delivered as a movie.
The Scope
Wedding filming is on an upward spiral. For wedding photography, an entry level photographer may charge something close to `30,000-40,000 for a wedding, whereas a professional
photographs for your relatives, they could be pleased with just your efforts and pay you some money. Either way, your portfolio will only grow. Interact before the wedding: You have landed your first client and the dates of the wedding have been finalised. Prior to the wedding, make it a point to interact with your client and his/ her family, so you make yourselves comfortable around them and they are used to having you around the three days of the wedding. Do remember to check out the venue as well, so you may be able to figure out beforehand the crucial points from where you will get your best shots. Build a team: You may be a really good photographer/videographer but it is not possible to be present
charges close to `5 lakh for just one day of shooting. Did we mention it’s a lucrative business? Wedding cinematographers like The Wedding Filmers may charge anywhere close to `20 lakh to cover the entire ceremony. These charges usually include additional services where they will provide you not only with the brilliantly edited footage, but also assemble it in printed albums (in the case of photographers) and movies on disks (in the case of filmers). The field of wedding shooting is highly competitive, demanding and rigorous. Considering the change in shooting styles, inherent creative talent and goodwill is absolutely necessary to survive. If you play your cards well, you will be rewarded with a choc-a-block calendar, with wedding bookings three months in advance, and the remunerations will be in abundance. It is important to keep in mind that a wedding is a prestigious occasion for two people. Shooting with sensitivity, positivity and love will give you the best results. yi
everywhere during a ceremony. Build a team, have more people working with you, preferably of the opposite sex, so they can easily blend in with their counterparts. It is known that a bride will be more comfortable having a female photographer around her as she readies herself for the big day. Equipment: Having the right camera and lenses for shooting is pivotal, but do remember to go a little light on that one. As you would constantly be shooting on the move, it is important to have one go-to lens for the day. JENNY DOWNING, FLICKR

_IN CONVERSATION
OF
Youth Inc caught up with British educationalist and pop culture expert Sir Christopher Frayling to talk about the changing landscape of young people’s culture Sir Christopher Frayling was in Mumbai in March as a delegate for the India Design Forum. As the former Rector of the Royal College of Art, Sir Frayling was part of a panel discussion on building design institutions. Youth Inc talked to him about pop culture, the youth in Britain and in India, and the youth’s involvement in the arts. Here are excerpts from the conversation: TO READ THE ENTIRE INTERVIEW USE THE QR SCANNER ON YOUR MOBILE PHONE
Do you find any difference between the youth of Britain and the youth of India? I think our education, our art education system, allows the students to be more angry, more difficult, more Bolshevik, oppositional; whereas, I think your educational system is a little bit more hierarchical where you sit at the feet of the master and so on. And I think you can’t have a really lively art school unless the students are fighting the previous generation. So you get this collision, and out of that collision you find your own voice. What’s awful is if the teacher agrees with everything because then there’s no kind of energy. I do think your education system is a tiny bit conformist. On the other hand, youth culture in India is really interesting, actually. It’s very, very exciting. Your music, your dance, your video, graphic design – it’s very distinctive, actually.
As a cultural historian and a keen observer of pop culture, how has young people’s involvement in pop culture changed over the years? I think there’s two things: one is it’s become much more multicultural. Pop culture is nourished from all sorts of different cultures. In the ’50s it was all American. Now, if you are in London, for example, it’s Caribbean, it’s Indian, it’s Chinese, it’s all these different cultures which are brought to London and then a melting pot of ideas comes out of it. The other is that it’s somewhat divided into sort of corporate culture on the one hand and small-scale, individual, independent [on the other]. I think it’s a real division between a push towards everything becoming corporate and techno. We never had that in the ’50s because the record industry was much smaller. You could innovate much more easily. Now it’s incredible difficult to break into these big corporations, so you have to work out a way of keeping your independence and innovations.
How can young people work in the arts in spite of there being no money in the arts? There’s two routes, really. One is to work in one of [the big] national companies, in a very junior capacity and work your way up. But the other one, which is much more fun, is to create a world around yourself. You create an exciting, interesting world, and you knock on the door and say, “I’ve got something really interesting to say,” whether it’s dance, music, visual art or whatever it is. So suddenly someone says, “Yeah, that should be on the landscape.” That’s the really exciting way in. You’ve got to have a good idea, though. And you’ve got to have the self-confidence to develop it. And you mustn’t allow yourself to get disillusioned with difficulty. It requires a very thick skin, actually, to build an arts company, but some of the most exciting developments in the arts have come from individuals who are fresh out of college, creating a world around themselves and having the confidence to really go with it. yi MAY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 37

e’ve all heard the story of Amelia Earhart vanishing off the face of the earth mysteriously. Her existence disintegrated into the sky along with her co-pilot and aircraft over 75 years ago while flying over the Pacific Ocean. However, there is a school of thought claiming that she and her co-pilot survived the crash and died as castaways on a desolate island. How did they come to such a conclusion? Well, a team of forensic scientists found a bone fragment on the island of Nikumaroro that could possibly belong to Earhart. By comparing the DNA from the bone to samples from postage stamps that Earhart stuck on envelopes using saliva, forensic scientists attempted to solve one of mankind’s most intriguing mysteries.
CRIME SCENE DO NOT CROSS
DESCRIPTION
Forensic science essentially entails working back from a crime scene to arrive at a convincing explanation of the crime, including identifying the victim, perpetrator, weapon, etc. Forensic scientists gather samples from the crime scene to help piece together the crime.
FIELDS Forensic Anthropology: Forensic anthropologists are experts in the field of osteology who study bone samples from the crime scene to determine the age, sex, race, etc of the victim. By analysing the bone structure, they can even assist in identifying the murder weapon. Forensic Chemistry: A forensic
chemist is a scientist who runs tests on the samples obtained from the crime scene which plays a pivotal role in explaining the crime. They are often required to testify in court to expound their findings. Forensic Entomology: Forensic entomology is the use of the insects and their arthropod relatives that inhabit decomposing remains to help determine the time of death in homicide cases. These bugs are also indicative of the type of surroundings the victim was kept in and for how long. Forensic Odontology: Forensic odontologists are specially trained dentists who study bite marks and teeth samples to aid victim or perpetrator identification and help the investigation. They ideally work out of hospitals or clinics and are called in

COURSES
CRIME SCENE DO NOT CROSS when their expertise is required. Forensic Reconstruction: This job entails reproducing the crime scene to jog the memory of some of the witnesses and also to get an understanding of how the crime took place. Reconstruction professionals reconstruct the anatomy of the victim by using computer graphics. Forensic Toxicology: Forensic toxicologists study samples from the victim to detect the presence of toxins, poison or other lethal compounds. WIKIMEDIA COMMONS USER CAMIOKC

At the undergraduate level, one can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science which is a threeyear programme available in private and government institutes. It is also available with Honours in a few institutes in the country. A minimum of 10+2 is required to be eligible for the course. In certain institutes, a minimum 50% grade is required in PCB/PCM to be eligible for admission. Essentially, the course structure would include an overall study of forensics including subjects on DNA fingerprinting, blood analysis, anthropology and crime scene investigation to name a few. The top universities in India to pursue forensic science are: •• Amity University (Noida, Uttar Pradesh) •• Dr Hari Singh Gour University (Sagar, Madhya Pradesh) •• Dr Babasahed Ambedkar Marathwada University (Aurangabad, Maharashtra) •• Raja Bahadur Venkat Rama Reddy Women’s College (Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh) •• Teerthanker Mahaveer University (Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh) It is advisable to pursue a master’s or PhD after a bachelor’s degree. These degrees can allow you to specialise in a particular field of forensic science.
STARTING UP
After completing a degree in forensic science, it may be difficult to find a job immediately. It is advisable to work as a trainee or forensic laboratory technician to begin your career if you are unable to find a fulltime job. Some universities that accept graduates for trainee programs are: •• Institute of Criminology and Forensic Science, New Delhi
•• University of Lucknow •• Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Science, Delhi •• Dr Hari Singh Gour Vishwa Vidyalaya, Sagar, Madhya Pradesh •• University of Delhi •• Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Hyderabad FLICKR USER WEST MIDLANDS POLICE
CRIME SCENE DO NOT CROSS
EMPLOYMENT Most of the jobs for forensic scientists are in the government sector, particularly in law enforcement agencies such as police, legal system and the investigative services of the central and state governments. To find a job in the public sector, it is important to keep a track of advertisements in Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announcements. A major chunk of trained forensic scientists are hired by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). A forensic scientist can also teach in institutes that impart education in forensic science. Depending on level of education, pay packages can be between `6,000 and `50,000 a month. This figure is subject to change depending on the employer.
CAREER PROSPECTS India has a scarcity of forensic scientists. It is a burgeoning field and will take some time to develop. If you are keen about the forensic sciences and intend on pursuing it as a career, keep in mind that it is a promising field, just waiting to bear fruit. yi MAY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 39

She pioneered the concept of career counselling and career writing in the print media. She is actively involved in personal and group counselling.
STUDY IN INDIA
If you have been a consistently good student with uniformly high marks across all subjects, but undecided about your professional education in the future, it would be advisable to opt for science with mathematics in plus two/HSC. Studying science would help you to clarify your aptitude for science and related professional education, and, at the same time, it would keep open your options for all manner of non-science related professional and academic fields.
MARKETING WITH CS Q: I am pursuing BCom and Company Secretary course simultaneously. However, my interest is in marketing and doing MBA in future. Should I still continue with CS? Milind The Company Secretary (CS) course offers you a professional foothold in the corporate sector, but it does not have direct relevance for marketing. However, as a commerce graduate applicant with a professional qualification like CS, you would get additional weightage while being considered for admission to MBA over another commerce graduate without a professional qualification, other things being equal. If you are doing well in both BCom and CS, continue with CS.

STUDY ABROAD
Though German universities charge a very minimal tuition fee, you have to budget for general living expenses, boarding and lodging, insurance, books, etc. Students in Germany have an average of €800 a month at their disposal, of which around onethird is the budget on accommodation. Do keep in mind that independent master’s degrees, which do not follow on directly from a bachelor’s degree, are subject to fees that may range from €650 to several thousand Euros a semester in any German university. For international master’s degree programmes and courses at private universities, fees may even exceed €20,000 a year.
MASTER’S IN THE UK Q: What would be the right time to plan for further studies in the UK for my master’s degree? Should it be while I am pursuing my graduation or after working for a few years after graduation? Arihant It would be a good idea to research the programmes that universities in the UK offer in your field of study to find out about the profile of students who are usually admitted. This gives you a fair idea of the composition of students pursuing the master’s degree programmes that you are targeting. You have to review not just the academic background of the students admitted but also whether they come with any work experience in a related field or are fresh graduates. Based on that you have to decide whether it would make better sense to join the master’s degree right after graduating, or after a few years of work experience in the same or related field.

alk up to any SRite and ask them what they love about their college. “Crossroads,” will be the reply, every time. The name of their annual fest is sacred to them, taken with great regard. And it should be too.
LIFE ON CAMPUS
For a commerce-centered, nationally leading institute with just two offered courses, SRCC excels in extracurriculars and boasts of around 20 societies that are active all through the year. On hot summer days, you will find members of the Street Theatre group dancing to ‘Oha’, their call song, near the Xerox Lawns. In the brief monsoon that Delhi observes every year, Panache, the dance society, holds its practices in classrooms,
a tradition that is followed by the Dramatics Society as well, on days when the auditorium gets taken by the Placement Cell. Come winter and all the registered societies like the Economics Society, the Commerce Society and the History and Political Science Society can be seen bustling around campus making preparations for their individual fests. All through the year, members of the two music societies prefer lying on the beautiful lawns present throughout campus and strumming their guitars, adding just a little more charm to the entire atmosphere.
EATS AND TREATS
SRCC is located in the coveted north campus of Delhi University. But unlike the trend in other north campus colleges, students prefer to
pass their time inside the college gates, instead of going to Kamla Nagar for a hog. And the sumptuous food in the canteen is to be credited for it. Most students don’t say that their day is complete till they have had chole bhature and paneer cutlet from the canteen or a steaming hot plate of Irrfan’s Maggi noodles. Irrfan’s makes for a nice hangout place on campus, where the shade of the Gulmohar trees provides for a much needed respite from the hot sun during summers. Wish Irrfan bhaiyya a good day and he just might give you a free bhujiya patty. The other place that is marked as a hangout zone is the area near the co-operative store, known informally, as the Co-op. Whether you are talking to your friend, getting notes photocopied at the Crystal Xerox Shop or checking out the clothes that

FESTS GALORE
The entire campus goes through a change during the fest season. The chairs in the library gather dust as everybody is outside, soaking in the super-charged fest atmosphere that lasts all of February. Crossroads is the only night festival in Delhi University. The day events consist of Paintball, Gully Cricket, Street Cricket, Zorbing, Dye All Day, and many others. Along with these events, there are many customised events that keep happening through the day. All the four nights play host to four different shows. There’s Encore: The Star Night which has seen stars like KK, Neeraj Shridhar and ShankarEhsaan-Loy. Then, for the fashion enthusiasts of DU, there’s Inferno. Last year, it was graced by Zarine Khan. Woodstock is the most anticipated by rock music lovers. Bands that have performed are Agnee, Euphoria, Parikrama, Jal and Vishal-Shekhar. And nobody, dancers and nondancers included, can forget Random Collisions: the DJ night which was hosted by DJ Suketu last year. But the most cherished weeks are the ones leading to the fest, when the entire college is functioning as a well-oiled machine, as one unit, one entirety. One makes friends, shares gossips, fights and then forgets the fights as well. But it is all a part of the ultimate college experience. And it is only the sweet success of this level of camaraderie that can be called the best fest of DU.

IN A NUTSHELL...
Being a part of SRCC teaches you a lot both within and without the classroom. In your three years here, you will meet a lot of different people and you will learn a lot about these people. You will realise that people are not one-dimensional, that the person who was a nerd in a school is capable of a lot more than just academics. In one sentence, SRCC – both the campus and its inhabitants – is a lot more than what meets the eye. yi MAY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 43

_STUDENT SPEAK
India’s
Musical Utsav Lal has been performing Indian classical music on the piano for 13 years with incorporations of jazz and western classical into his music. He tells Sean Sequeira about the challenges faced while playing ragas on a piano
You started playing when you were just 6-7 years of age and have performed numerous concerts, how do you feel about being called a child prodigy? I have always wanted appreciation of my work and my music to be on an absolute scale and not in consideration of my age. Being called a child prodigy is not something that has ever assumed great importance, swayed or influenced my music pursuit. To me the most important thing is to be known & respected based on the depth and sincerity of the music I play. At a time when most adolescents were deciding between rock and rap, what inspired you to pick classical Indian music?
My fascination for the piano came very early and way before my foray into Indian classical music. In the initial years while I played both western classical and Indian film music on the piano, it was strong classical-based Indian film compositions that first introduced me to the challenge of playing Indian classical music on the piano. As I got deeper into it, the power and challenge of the music completely overwhelmed me. This coupled with the fact that Indian classical piano records were hard to find made me determined to explore this new path. I believe Indian classical music is the most evolved form of musical expression and it’s the genre that gives me the most satisfaction.

Have you enjoyed a ‘normal’ childhood? Pretty much normal. There is pressure sometimes to do the balancing act, but I don’t mind because it’s something that I want to do. I enjoy performing and playing music. Actually, I don’t think my life really is that different. I still go out and have a social life. A lot of my friends are as crazy about music as I am and we have a blast jamming all night or catching gigs/concerts. No regrets at all on anything. Being an accomplished young musician, how do you hope to encourage the Indian youth of today to appreciate Indian classical music? My future plans are to take Ragas on Piano to all parts of the world and generate an interest in the Indian youth to explore and enjoy our classical legacy. I would like to present various concerts all over India and reach out to children in school as well. I would love to be a part of SPICMACAY and perform for them.
A performer from the SPICMACAY group
Do you enjoy performing for Indian audiences more than for foreign audiences? Both have their own charm and inspire me differently. With western audiences, they love alaap, slow sections of a raga and I feel very relaxed and free to explore the raga with no time frame restrictions. They love to know more about it, so I also explain a bit before a rendition. With Indian audiences, they are so knowledgeable, involved and give so much vocal appreciation during a performance that one is always inspired to experiment and play with the rhythm and focus on the layakari. Do you have a list of musicians you want to collaborate with in the future? Too many to name. I am keen to play with Irish musician Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh who plays contemporary folk music on the Shujaat Khan ji Hardanger fiddle. He is one of the most imaginative and fascinating new musicians that I have heard of recently. The piano and the sitar go really well together and it would be a dream to do a jugalbandi concert with Shujaat Khanji.
SOURAV DAS, FLICKR
How much do you train at the moment? How do you unwind? There are days when I may have spent over 10 hours on the piano. I spend all my time either playing music, listening to music, researching music on the Internet, reading about great performers and legends, going for concerts or gigs and/or playing with other musicians. I’m an avid reader as well and can’t fall asleep without reading every night.
What other instruments do you play, apart from the piano? I was invited to play the world’s first ever Fluid Piano by its inventor, Geoff Smith in London and that was a fascinating experience. Although similar to a standard piano, it is a totally new instrument. Aside from that, I can play the guitar and a bit of drums. You were a part of the Irish rock band Little Green Cars. Did you enjoy the experience? It was a super experience for me. We did a lot of gigs
in Ireland including the Electric Picnic and the Oxegen Festival. The band members are amazingly talented musicians and we wrote some excellent music collectively. I found it refreshingly different and fun to be a part of Little Green Cars and a huge learning experience to play in a rock band. yi

Prior to becoming the marketing mind behind some of Bollywood’s biggest films, you worked in the banking industry. What lessons did you learn from your association with the finance world? The finance world teaches you a lot like discipline, attention to detail, how to dot the Is and cross the Ts. Every detail mattered; it taught me how dedication and hard work can get any job done. What motivated you to venture into the largely untapped (at least in India) business of film marketing by establishing your company Bottomline Media? It was all by accident; never did I think that I would be running a media company that had a large part of its business in Bollywood. Having worked in the media sector in the US as a media banker, the understanding for the business and the whole interaction with studios intrigued me. When I moved back, it was serendipity, and an opportunity presented itself and Bottomline Media was born. What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while setting up your company? It is always a big challenge when you start something by your own. The main challenge I faced was to start a company in an industry where I did not have a film background. The other challenge was to break through the mindset of Indian and traditional Bollywood marketing putting forth marketing innovations that had never been witnessed before. Do you feel the way a movie is marketed can play a vital role in the success or failure of a film? Marketing is a catalyst to a movie. Creating awareness and opening the box
office is how marketing helps the movie. At the end of the day, the script and way the movie is presented is what marks the success or failure of a film. Having worked on an extensive list of films, is there any particular project that you especially enjoyed working on? It has to be Ra.One. It was a case study in marketing in itself. Working with the Badshah of Bollywood and then creating marketing innovations that had never been done before was a pure thrill in itself. A worldwide campaign, first time Playstation game based on Bollywood and so much more. Every day we created a new avenue to market the film and just working with Shahrukh was a learning experience. Bottomline Media is the first Indian company to be hired as marketing consultants for a Hollywood film (‘The Zero Theorem’). Do you think marketing strategies vary drastically with Bollywood and Hollywood films? Yes, strategies do vary. Hollywood movies have the look book, the positioning of infilm, the storyboard of where the products will be placed, how they will be shot – everything is pre-determined. Deadlines are of key essence. Marketing strategy is put to play even before the film is shot to understand the positioning; different territories have different focuses. In all, a very interesting aspect one gets to learn on movies. Being a successful entrepreneur at such a young age, do you have any advice for our readers who wish to venture into businesses of their own? Dare to dream. If you desire it, work hard; persistence and determination will help you achieve it. It’s all about the journey. yi

adgets! What would we do without them? Over the years, they have ingrained themselves into our lives and have grafted on as extended limbs. Just think about it, would you manage to live a single day without your smartphone? How different would life be if tablet computers hadn’t been invented? And the question we ask ourselves every day, how would we live without Google? Technology’s evolution can be traced to a time when needs were to be met with faster solutions. Now, however, technology has turned into a medium for showcasing innovation, and rather than meeting a demand, it creates demand. Nevertheless, we wouldn’t have it any other way and we continue on our path as the most techsavvy and gadget-hungry generation of youth the country has ever seen. Our smallest and largest dreams about machines and mankind have been coming true year after year with advancements that are becoming more and more adept at reaching into our
minds and reading our basest needs. With the click of one button or the tap of one finger, we can now accomplish a range of tasks varying from the mundane to the complicated. Our life is intertwining with technology in complex weaves which are only set to get tighter and stronger in 2013. The big names in the tech game have taken the world by storm with audacious new ideas which will manifest as physical products this year. We have followed the ups and downs of Google, Apple, Microsoft, Samsung and Facebook whose releases this year may either disappoint or enrapture us. We have looked at the world of gaming with advanced consoles and other exciting paraphernalia releasing this year. We have even covered some other gadgets that can only be called briliantly offbeat. But any gadget is only as good as the applications it can support, so we have dived into an ocean of apps, sifted and sorted through the clutter and found the best apps for phones. With time, gadgets get phased out as newer, faster and sharper innovations are born. Shahid Judge looks at what is in store for our future
adget fanatics are always well versed with mobile phones, laptops, tablets and other devices that revolve around the realm of electronics. We thought about throwing some fuel to the interest of not just gadget fanatics, but also the technologically impaired, by presenting a list of gadgets that may soon be a part of our future or may be obsolete, given ample amount of time. We have also taken the liberty of predicting the year in which we expect them to become the hottest properties in the market or when they are completely wiped off the planet.
Incoming: Rolltop Laptops Ever had problems looking for a suitable bag for your laptop? Well, now your laptop will be its own bag. The idea was conceptualised in 2009 by a team of graduates from the IT, design, and business administration fields. PREDICTION: 2016
Outgoing: Printing Press The cause of death of this noble and age-old device can be attributed to e-books, e-newspapers and even e-mails. Technology may soon leave the human mind-set impatient to carry the bulk of a book or a newspaper,
especially since it can be viewed in a much smaller cellular phone. PREDICTION: 2025
Incoming: Cyborg Given the way humans have formed a symbiotic relationship with technology, theorists have argued that it won’t take too long before the two merge. Confused? Think of Darth Vader from Star Wars or Sonny from iRobot to get a better idea. PREDICTION: 2030
Outgoing: Personal Computers Smartphones are often considered ‘minicomputers.’ One day they might just become computers. One can do practically everything on cell phones these days: browse the Internet, play games, music and videos, take photos, etc. Not to mention, they’re portable and some models are more expensive than computers themselves! PREDICTION: 2030
Incoming: Space Elevators
choose to take an elevator up to space. The Japanese imagination proves to be ‘out of this world’ (pun intended) in terms of international tourism since they plan to create an elevator directly to a space station. PREDICTION: 2500
Outgoing: Film Cameras DSLR cameras, pointand-shoot cameras, mobile phones... even iPods have cameras. With every passing day, the quality is getting much better. Soon, we’ll get to a point where the massive equipment required to make a feature film can either fit in your pocket or in a small bag. PREDICTION: 2023
Incoming: Quick Charging Batteries Scientists are still working on this concept. The idea is to charge the battery of a cell phone or laptop at ten times the normal charge time. This is ideal for users who forget to charge

Outgoing: Remote Controls The remote control, a life saver to the couch potato, is now making way for a healthier way of living. The user now has to take the effort to ‘speak’ to the television, DVD player, music system, etc. The technology involved in this healthy revolution is called ‘voice recognition.’ PREDICTION: 2024
Incoming: Car that can turn into two motorcycles
made way for the demise of cell phones with QWERTY keypads. Yet, the spirit of QWERTY lives on, as touch phones use the keypad design for users to type. All that’s missing are the buttons. PREDICTION: 2020
A concept sponsored by Renault, the idea behind this is to have a car that can split into two motorbikes. An ideal investment for the adventurous user and his/her sidekick. It’s almost like a Batman-Robin thing.
Remember the clock the Weasley family used in the Harry Potter series? Well, believe it or not, it’s coming to the Muggle world soon. The clock’s mechanism works by updating a user’s location based on their Twitter updates so family members know where they are at all times. PREDICTION: 2015
Outgoing: E-Readers
Incoming: Paper Phone Mobile phone companies often compete to bring about the slimmest phone with all the possible features. Now comes a time when ‘slim’ becomes paper thin. And so we have the Paper Phone, which is meant to be folded in order to avail of its functions. PREDICTION: 2026
Incoming: The Harry Potter Clock
PREDICTION: 2035
An e-reader’s sole function is to allow its user to read e-books, e-periodicals, and e-newspapers. Since all this can be done on smartphones, e-readers have lost popularity and may soon be on the verge of extinction. PREDICTION: 2018
Outgoing: MP3 Players Music is an important feature in the life of a human being, and so is the mobile phone. As a result, mobile phones can now play music. So why should a person carry two different things when one can do it all? PREDICTION: 2030

The penalty: For each digression, your friend(s) is/are allowed to post one embarrassing item (picture, wall post, etc) about you on all your social media accounts.
TALES OF THE UNPLUGGED FOLKS Tech detoxing is not that hard. Just look at these guys who have eschewed technology at different levels:
Sends snail mail
“I post letters because there’s always something personal and intimate in the handmade and the time consumed. Letter writing is an art that email is not. There’s also something thrilling in the waiting process; waiting to receive a letter and waiting for a letter to be received. Post conjures a feeling of anticipation that email never has and it’s almost always worth the wait.”
- Kyra Mathews, 24, Copywriter
Doesn’t have a smartphone “I don’t like touch screens and qwerty key pads which is why I go old school. I don’t miss smartphones at all, except for WhatsApp. My phone is so old that it doesn’t even support WhatsApp, unfortunately. Also, I find smartphones to be very delicate. My work requires a phone that will not break on the first day at the job.” - Chique Fernandes, 28, marine biologist
Off the Internet
Paul Miller, staff writer for American tech website The Verge, went on a self-imposed exile from the Internet for a year last April. While he still used his laptop to write articles and his phone to make calls, none of his gadgets were connected to the Internet. Towards the end of his exile, he wrote, “Leaving the internet was so great… at first… But then old habits reared their ugly heads… I’ve spent more time than you could imagine in this past year simply laying on my couch. Like, just laying there… Without the internet, my world has shrunk.” MAY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 65

_RELATIONSHIPS
TO While there are those who claim that a man and woman can never be friends, Vatsala Chhibber poses a new question: can a straight man and gay man be good friends?
“A
re you close friends with any straight guys?” I asked my gay friend over dinner. After a moment of thought he replied, “Well, not really. I mean I hang out with boyfriends of my female friends when they’re around but I’m not close friends with any straight guys.”
“Why do you think that is?” I was given two logical explanations. The first, gay men and straight men don’t have much in common. “I’m interested in fashion and music; I don’t share a lot of common interests with straight guys,” he reasoned. However, this argument seems tenuous; after all, heterosexual friendships are not always based on common interests, are they? How is it that straight men and women can be great friends even if they have nothing in common? His second reason was not being comfortable around straight men because his friendliness might be misinterpreted. “Once I accidentally brushed this guy’s hand while walking and after that I was so nervous that he would think I was hitting on him. For some reason, straight men feel gay men will try and make a move on them,” he explained. “I mean, honestly, some of them wouldn’t even stand a chance if they were the last men alive.” Ouch.
However, don’t straight men and women manage to be friends; again with the possibility of one making a move on the other? While these are only the views of one individual, one can’t help but wonder: why are gaystraight male friendships so rare?
Maybe not in the world I live in, because I make friends who are evolved and honest [but] in society at large many straight/bisexual men would not be at ease with a gay man because of how it might affect his image of being a ‘man’ - Onir, filmmaker

H N E NOUG A M U O Y ARE R A IGHT? TO BE ST Fear of being labelled gay by association is sadly one reason why straight men shy away from gay friendships. “I feel men who steer away from gay men in public space are people who are not secure about their own sexuality and identity and that is what worries them,” says filmmaker Onir, who directed the critically acclaimed film, My Brother Nikhil. “I have noticed that it’s most often that bisexual men are more homophobic as they do not want be perceived as gay.” But with increasing awareness, there are straight men who do not consider sexual preferences while forming friendships. For example, Adryan Gonsalves, a 22-year-old law student, has had a close gay friend, Donawyn Fernandes, for almost six years.
“The way I see it is, I am absolutely comfortable with my sexuality and that is the real difference-maker. You may either react or not depending on how confident you are in yourself and how you have nothing to prove to others. I have never had any gay people point at me and go – Haha he’s straight, let’s condescend to his level of maturity and make fun of him.” Adryan’s friend Donawyn disagrees with the observation that very few gay men have straight friends. “I think it’s more the other way around,” he argues. “Very few straight men have gay friends and it has a lot to do with the undertones of homophobia. You see, homophobia isn’t necessarily the fear of gay people but rather the fear or being gay itself.”
My small bit of advice to young gay men and women coming out the closet is that first be totally comfortable with your sexuality and with yourself. Then if you face any stigma or discrimination you will know exactly how to deal with. - Sridhar Rangayan, Filmmaker, Festival Director
SE XUA L ATTR ACTION What if your gay friend makes a move on you? “We’re not delusional! I don’t chase straight men. In fact, if I am attracted to a guy, I become aloof, not over-friendly,” says Rohan Jaishankar [name changed]. Sridhar Rangayan , one of the most prominent faces of the LGBT movement in India, says, “I have quite a few straight friends who I have known since my high school days. We are still close friends and my openness about my sexuality hasn’t changed my equations with them […] If their heterosexuality doesn’t bother me, why should my homosexuality bother them!”
Sir Elton John (L), who is gay, once accused Eminem (R) of being homophobic; he later formed a strong friendship with the rapper and helped him quit drugs While Jesse Tyler Ferguson (L) and Eric
Stonestreet (R) play a gay couple in Modern YTH I NG At the risk of promoting stereotypes, N Family, Stonestreet is straight in real life A E V A if the primary interests of straight men DO WE HMON? are sports and women, and gay men ladies and possibly understand them I N COM
fancy men and fashion, what do they really have in common? Well, Donawyn Fernandes finds no lack of common interests in his friendship with a straight man. “Ours was not a friendship of sports and girls; it was a more intellectual kind,” he says. “We’d discuss books, music, shows and many other things.” Possibly, one of the biggest things gay men and straight men have in common is their love for women. Gay men are usually popular with the

better than any straight man ever could. “When it comes to women it helps to have a gay friend”, says Adryan. “Because when you're in a relationship you reach a phase where your female friends say – you messed up, how can you not know what you did wrong? and your straight guy friends say – Bro, why is she flipping? I don’t see the issue, you’re right. It’s times like that when Donawyn’s advice actually comes into play.”

The best part of having a straight friend is... “I’d like to say it’s rather refreshing, but then again there isn’t much of a difference, is there? It’s rather stereotypical to think that there would be a world of difference between the relationship that I share with Adryan in comparison to a gay man. I have gay friends who are muscular and buff and straight friends that get a manicure so there really isn’t a difference. At the end of the day, we’re all men and we have things that interest us and things that don’t.” - Donawyn Fernandes

“Donawyn gives me (amongst others) advice on any and everything, even if he isn’t asked and it isn’t wanted. Let’s just he’s ‘well opinionated’. Let’s be honest, today’s males do tend towards metrosexuality and gay men do know their way around grooming. That’s definitely more than a stereotype. Also, I would say Donawyn is someone who I have spoken to on every topic from advice about women to career plans. It helps you get a different view or perspective.”

SCIENCE BEHIND THE GAY MAN-STRAIGHT WOMAN FRIENDSHIP According to a study published in Evolutionary Psycoholgy, straight women and gay men are BFFs for a reason
There is no sexual tension or ‘mating competition’ in the relationship
Straight women feel gay men give them more attention than straight men which makes them feel sexy and confident
They tend to trust each other with relationship advice. Straight women feel other women might be biased in their opinions due to jealousy or competition. The same problem applies to gay friendships The study found that because of the lack of ulterior motives and sexual attraction, gay men and straight women find their relationship more honest

We know where the funk in Funkanatomy is, but what’s the anatomy?
Must I specify? Isn’t it more fun when we leave people guessing?
Which famous person (or people) do you think badly needs some Funkanatomy?
Funky r o f n o i h s fa s r a e e h t
Kirin Vas, founder of handmade earrings outfit Funkanatomy, talks to Youth Inc about her job and gives some handy tips on making earrings
Every person famous or not needs to ‘funkify’ their lives – choosing one over the other, would just be so unfair! But if I was being purely selfish, I wouldn’t complain if Kate Middleton wore a pair of my earrings.
When did you realise that earrings are your future?
Future? I’m lucky if I know what’s happening next week (and luckier if I remember once next week comes around)! Let’s just say earrings became my present (to self) after I realised I could make better earrings (in terms of quality and price and design) than the things which were available in the market.
What’s the latest buzz in the earrings trend?
Earrings have trends? I’m so glad I did not go to fashion school or anything because clearly I would have failed. Now I am going to sit in corner and question self for not knowing these things.
Take us quickly through the conception and creation of a Funkanatomy earring.
MATERIALS REQUIRED Beads, earring hooks, pliers, wire (any other findings you might require for creation of earring) STEP 1 Take out raw materials – spread all beads out on floor to better ascertain their colours and shapes. Once room looks like bead market just threw up, you get a good idea of what materials you’re working with and you start making the earring. STEP 2 er... that’s it.

1 Cut the length of wire you want to use to make your earring.
2 Turn the end of the wire to form a loop (this will prevent the bead from falling right through)
3 Thread the beads with the wire 4 Cut the wire leaving enough to in the order in which you want form a second loop. them to be 5 For the final step, open up the loop present in your earring hoop. Place the earring loop through this one and close (make sure you do this properly or you’ll be short of an earring)!

ILLUSTRATIONS BY GUNEET NARULA
Materials required 1 Beads (which have holes through which you can thread them) 2 A bit of bendable wire. 3 Earring hooks from an old pair of earrings you no longer like/that have broken or have lost their partner 4 Pliers (to bend wire and cut the wire)
What you will need
1 Discarded chains (like old luggage chains or from old/unused handbags) 2 Ribbons (in as many colours as you want) 3 Pliers/metal scissors
How to make your funky wristlet
Step 1: Measure
Measure the size of your wrist and then add a few extra centimetres to it. Measure this length onto your chain and then cut it with metal scissors or pliers.
Step 3a: Pull out
Step 3c: Finish
Step 2a: Weave
Complete your wristlet with knotting both ends firmly. (add about three knots) Quick tip: Run the ends of the ribbon through heat to prevent them from fraying. You can create multiple wristlets and match them with your apparel or even wear them all together!
Step 2b: Loop
Unleash your creative pangs and pick ribbons that appeal to you and move them back and forth into each chain link to intertwine the chain and ribbons together. Remember to make a loop at each end.
Step 3b: Knot up
Step 4: Wear!

Mom’s the
word
On the occasion of Mother’s Day, Nisha JamVwal explores the beauty and complexities of motherchild relationships
M
y flatmate in California woke up energetically one morning, declaring to us all, “Today is Mother’s Day and I’m going shopping for my mother.” She did buy a present, an expensive one... and she charged it to her mother’s credit card. The one day she did remember her mother, aside of a regular barrage of demands and problems, was to buy her mother a present ‘on Mother’s Day’, she charged it to her. I do hope we in India, in our fast growing materialistic age and shattering value systems, don’t forget the value and importance of the one selfless beautiful relationship in our lives. And with Mother’s Day this month, I was hoping we could go down
memory’s path and remember all the wonderful moments that we’ve shared with that one selfless soul that gives cynosure to our existence. How many statues and paintings eulogise this special relationship? Yes, I know she can be tiresome at times, and can even nag and pursue us with her list of to-dos, but when you’re objective and thinking with a cool head, you do know it’s for the best (well, mostly!). What is a mother’s perspective to bringing up her children? “Bringing up children in today’s world is challenging. Full stop! Period!” says actor Soni Razdaan with her typical jest intertwined with serious undertone about her kids Shaheen and the new kid on the Bollywood block Alia Bhatt.
A TUMULTUOUS RELATIONSHIP
A mother-and-child relationship to me has always been intriguing, mainly because of the complexities of my own relationship with a ‘tiger mom’. I do believe she’ll agree with Soni wholeheartedly. Everything my mother said might have been true: I should not have freaked every time my boyfriend had looked, spoken, breathed at another girl. Yes, I definitely looked better with black eyeliner. And true, journalism and writing was my forte. But she could have probably considered saying it more bonhomously so that her words didn’t make me buck and want to do the exact opposite.

_POINT OF VIEW
FRIENDS, NOT CARETAKERS
From the other side of the fence today, I see my friends struggling with their daughters, challenging and having spats with their mums. And their kids are thus unable to deal with the barrage of ‘feedback’ meted out to them.
GROWING UP WITH CHILDREN
Lilette Dubey shares her perspective about bringing up Neha and Ira, “I want to be there to always hold their hands, but I know that I have to let go and allow them to work it out themselves. After all, they are individuals in their own right and I won’t always be there. To keep communication channels unclogged, it is also important to hear feedback
A mother-and-child relationship to me has always been intriguing, mainly because of the complexities of my own relationship with a tiger mom you don't like to hear, from your child, and not undermine their opinion. It’s part of the journey. The flow cannot be one way – however young your kid, you have to keep the respect of your child. You cannot humiliate a child just because the child is your own.” The bottom line being, that it’s not only the child who has to do the growing up, it’s the parent too!
Having said that, kids do need boundaries and it becomes a tight ropewalk for a parent to achieve it without coming on too strong. Which is why it is important for us to learn as we grow up with some introspection. If we don’t work at creating the foundation for a strong future, we won’t reap rewards and may suffer the consequences. So to keep a happy relationship, it is very important to learn to be responsible for ourselves. We won’t always have mom to fall back on, to do our projects or grill us before exams. Or to cajole us to better ourselves, to step up the game. We have to make the realisation if we wish our mother to be more of a friend and less of a caretaker. To have a fabulous relationship, it is indeed important to learn to let go on both sides and be independent and come together as friends and confidants. To be able to go to coffee and not keep advising each other. A little distance and mutual respect goes a long way in any relationship. It is then that we can truly appreciate and celebrate each other and the institution of a mother. The trick for the mother is to be there and not be there both at the same time. Don’t ask me how one does that. Life is about always learning, isn’t it? Of course, our mothers will be there for us but it is important to become responsible for ourselves. I can say that probably the hardest thing a mother has to do is to let go. I know that my mother found it difficult and still tells me how to run my life often, and I probably enjoy the fact that she feels that connection. We love having our matriarch to lean on, especially on those not-so-wonderful days. That brings me back to Mother’s Day, and my take on that, personally, is that let’s make every day special with our mums, because we don’t seem to remember that she won’t be around forever – time is ticking and a day will come that she will leave us forever. yi Follow Nisha on www.nishajamvwal.blogspot.com Tweet her on @nishjamvwal MAY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 81

PICKS
Country singer Blake Shelton, better known as judge and coach on reality show The Voice, released his eighth studio album late March. The tracks in Based on a True Story can be classified under various sub-genres and are, as the title suggests, inspired by Shelton’s life experiences. The first song, Boys ‘Round Here creates an ambience of the countryside with its vivid lyrical description of the activities of country boys, and although shows a slight hip-hop influence, it serves as a music good introduction to the rest of the album. The standouts are Small Town Big Time and Country on the Radio which are typical country songs with loud guitar and melodious riffs. Other notable songs are Sure Be Cool If You Did and Ten Times Crazier. On the whole, the album is soul-stirring, heartfelt and entertaining.

QUICK FIRE WITH MA ANAND SHEELA “I saw Bhagwan extremely charismatic, brilliant, inspiring, powerful, and
loving, and I also saw Him being ridiculously manipulative, vengeful, self-serving and hurtful.”
This dichotomous description of Bhagwan Rajneesh (popularly known as Osho) by Ma Anand Sheela serves as the most appropriate summary of her novel Don’t Kill Him. In the book, Ma Sheela, who served as Bhagwan Rajneesh’s secretary for four years, reveals details about his dependence on material goods, stubbornness and manipulative methods. Despite this, Ma Sheela also confesses to a deep love for him that exists even today. The book is divided into two sections; the first deals with Ma Sheela’s resignation from the commune, her trial in US courts and subsequent jail term. The latter half of the book chronicles the beginning of her relationship with Bhagwan Rajneesh and the setting up of Rajneeshpuram in Oregon. While Don’t Kill Him leaves you with more questions than answers (especially about the allegations of illegal activities carried out in Rajneeshpuram and the US trial), Ma Sheela does offer a fresh perspective in revealing the personality of a flawed spiritual guru without condemning him. What motivated you to write about your association with Bhagwan Rajneesh and its consequences? My father had inspired me to write about life with Bhagwan. My father felt that my experience is so vital and important that the world should know about it. I hope that people see Bhagwan as He was [...]He was a rare genius. One can learn from Him. At the same time one should not ignore His shortcomings.
books
You often mention your love for Bhagwan Rajneesh. Didn’t this love prevent you from revealing unflattering aspects of his personality? In love one accepts all. Good, bad and ugly. Love is not uncomfortable of shameful events. Love remains true and truthful. It is our big mistake that we try to hide the dark side of a loved one. Only by accepting bad and ugly one can focus on the good and special. The bad and ugly are not prominent in my life. It is love that is profound and prominent in my life. Four years as Bhagwan Rajneesh’s secretary and three years in jail – what was a greater learning experience for you? My time in prison was the icing on the cake of learning. There I was able to test Bhagwan’s teachings and what I had learned from Him. We both came out shining through. We both came out with flying colors.

SUKHO THAI – THE THAI FOOT SPA Sukho Thai is a spa primarily for your feet, but also provides massages for the back, shoulders and head. AMBIENCE: The spa’s air smells heavenly with a concoction of various oils. The place is lit with just candles, and is awash in a comforting silence. THE OFFERING: Sukho Thai is known for its traditional foot massage. The masseuse treats you with reverence as she rubs and kneads various oils into your skin. Within minutes you are relaxed. The massages for your shoulder and head alleviate pain and stiffness. The masseuse also stretches out your back and your limbs. At the end, you are given a bowl of fresh fruits and a cup of ginger tea. WHAT DOESN’T WORK: Some amount of pain is understandable, but what is unacceptable is a wrong move while working on the pressure points on the soles of your feet. One incorrect move by the masseuse and you are left with a leg ache that lasts for days. OVERALL IMPRESSION: Go to Sukho Thai when you feel stressed or burnt out. It is bound to sort you out for a few days. Branches in Mumbai, Pune and Goa. - Aparna Sundaresan

You will juggle many commitments and inspire love and animosity in people around you. You will learn new ways to handle difficult colleagues. Guard against losing your temper. Occupy yourself with other tasks until you achieve directional clarity. Don’t push unnecessarily as a strong fixation is undesirable in the long haul.
You will make changes to your routine to prevent stagnation. Legal issues will be satisfactorily resolved. Go with the flow and stay away from minor disruptions and those who are trying to provoke a reaction. Being open minded will help in creative pursuits. Lady luck is smiling brightly at you in important matters this time around.
Help colleagues but stand your ground. Look into the motives of everyone involved. Your ability to create positive and fair situations for all could lead to a leadership role with bigger responsibilities. Bring your immediate focus on laying the groundwork for the future by taking up commitments that are in sync with your long-term career plans.
