note

Over the last decade, MBA has established itself as the most popular business qualification and the single step to reach higher rungs of the corporate world. None of the sectors from law, medicine, finance, non-profit to sports is exempt from the influence of the MBA. Today, both students and professionals, from different streams, want to get an MBA and its importance cannot be understated. With thousands of B-schools to choose from, every year students face the dilemma of selecting the right institute. What makes an institute ‘right’? The coursework? The faculty? The careers cell? The sheer volume of criteria makes this a difficult and overwhelming decision. The degree itself has undergone some modifications to keep up with changing times. One can now choose from conventional two-year degrees, diplomas and online MBA programmes. However, these choices also increase the uncertainty faced by students. Thus we have made an attempt to guide you through their decision making process. Our special B-school rankings issue not only provides a list of the best B-schools in the world, but also the best places to study specific subjects like finance, marketing and management. We have also analysed and ranked the top schools for an online MBA – a degree that is gaining much ground. If running after an MBA is one kind of addiction, we have several others to tell you about. Being addicted to alcohol and cigarettes is the typical fare, but there are people who have outlandish obsessions. Can you believe a 17-year-old boy actually murdered his own mother when she forbade him from playing video games? Or that a 24-yearold woman is so addicted to shopping that when she sees a dress she likes, she buys it in every colour available? There are many such instances of hobbies transforming into addictions and turning fatal. The festive season of Diwali this month brings with it rangolimaking sessions, family gatherings, shopping sprees, mouth-watering sweets and, of course, fire crackers. However, I feel that it’s time to embrace a more eco-friendly celebration and preserve what’s left of our much-abused environment. I would like to wish you all a happy and safe Diwali!

Around the World LLM to be a one-year course

T

he University Grants Commission (UGC) has given approval for the master’s degree programme in law (LLM) to be a one-year course instead of two years. Only India, Bangladesh and Pakistan impart a two-year LLM. This duration led several students to taking up masters’ programmes in universities abroad. The intent behind making LLM a one-year course is to stop the best legal minds from going abroad to pursue a similar programme in shorter time. This way the nation shall retain the best of talents. According to the prevailing system, a student has to spend at least seven or eight years after intermediate to gain a master’s degree in law. The UGC had set up an expert committee under N.R. Madhava Menon, founding Vice-Chancellor of National Law School of India University, Bangalore to examine the proposal. The committee has endorsed the move and has recently submitted its report to the UGC.

IIT BOMBAY ALL IN MOOD FOR MOOD INDIGO 2012

M

ood Indigo’s umpteen efforts and struggles are being considered worthwhile. IIT Bombay’s famed college festival has hosted bands of international repute like Porcupine Tree, Karnivool and Katatonia in the past. This time, they have negotiated with Simple Plan, the Canadian rock band, to fly to India and perform live at Mood Indigo 2012. The leading punk rock band will headline Livewire Night on 22nd December, 2012, in IIT Bombay’s Open Theatre. “There were lots of metal gigs already lined up in the country so we thought of doing something different – having a punk rock band at the fest”, says Jayant Jain, the head of concerts. Once the band publicly announced and affirmed their visit to India to perform exclusively at Mood Indigo, their Facebook and Twitter pages were abuzz with chatter, likes and shares. Registration to see the band live at Mood Indigo is now open at www.moodi.org/simpleplan

SYMBIOSIS NATIONAL APTITUDE TEST (SNAP) TO BE CONDUCTED ON DECEMBER 16

T

he SNAP is a common and mandatory written test to be taken by students aspiring to gain admission in any of the postgraduate programmes at Symbiosis International University. This test preceeds the enormous selection process of candidates who would later be given admission in the institute, if selected in the process. For non-MBA courses, now the applicants also need to take an additional test which includes SIMC-MMC (for the Pune campus only) and also SIG-MSc (for Geoinformatics). For further information, you can log on to www.snaptest.org.

Texas colleges act as temptress for Indians with degrees at `5.3L

T

he days of prestigious American degrees seeming unattainable due to exorbitant costs are almost over now. A few Texas colleges have taken steps to mitigate soaring high tuition fees. They have proposed undergraduate degrees that cost US$10,000 (approx `5.3 lakhs). This initiative will attract several students from India, more than 100,000 of who are enrolled in US colleges in any given year. Although American postgraduate degrees are more popular among Indian students, the four-year undergraduate degree is gaining ground too. About ten colleges in Texas are proposing to offer the degree for as little as US$10,000. Otherwise, the typical cost in a modest college is around US$30,000 (`16 lakhs). Angelo State University, a 7,000-student school in San Angelo, West Texas is the first to announce that it will offer this low-cost degree. This shall hopefully reduce the percentage of students who after completing their course, enter the job market with huge, haunting debts.

Jai Hind’s BMS fest Talaash is all set to create the new world

W

ith speculations of the world terminating, this year Talaash’s theme is to create a new existence, their universe. Talaash will kickstart on the 9th of December, continuing its legacy with Treasure Hunt. It is claimed their Treasure Hunt is going to be bigger than ever. Hmm... we wonder how big the treasure is. The second day of Talaash 2012 i.e. the 10th of December, will be Carnival Day. It will be a Rio-inspired carnival day filled to the brim with fun events. Mega Management Event is also scheduled where the assets of the countries in the new world will be auctioned. The next day will be Cultural Day and shall include the grand finale dazzlers like Drama, Dance and Fashion Show where teams of different contingents will compete. Dharavi Rocks, a slum children’s band from Dharavi is set to rock the stage. They pledge, “We are here to not only bring to you the best BMS fest, but to help the under-privileged as well with all that we can. We have already had a very successful social campaign in the month of July as a part of which we distributed T-shirts, Frooti and biscuit packets to the homeless street kids.” Now this is what we call fun-ly social!

Students must check credentials of distance education providers

S

tudents pursuing or planning to take up distance mode of education are advised to check the present status of recognition or approval of programmes of universities and institutions on the Distance Education Council (DEC’s) website. The authorities of DEC have announced that in the absence of DEC approval, any qualification obtained via distance education shall not be recognised for employment under the central government. This action was taken by the council on finding out that certain universities and institutions were placing misleading advertisements in newspapers and other media for admission in programmes through the distance mode, indicating that they have the approval of the DEC for various courses. Students are also advised to not register at any franchised study centre that charges huge bucks. The study centre must be operated by the university/institution itself within its territorial jurisdiction, on par with DEC norms. Fraud is on the prowl. Be alert. Be smart.

_WALK OF LIFE

LinkedIn LINKEDIN IS THE LATEST PLATFORM TO PROVIDE A HOST OF OPTIONS IN ONE’S CAREER. JASMINE CHABRIA EXPLORES LINKEDIN’S TREASURES

UNLIMITED

I

sn’t LinkedIn just about business networking? This is the general perception attached to LinkedIn, but there are way more interesting aspects and opportunities dwelling in it. It is not only a great search tool, but an enhancement of one on the professional front. Having the right LinkedIn profile equips one with booming career enhancement pushes, so let’s get linked to the LinkedIn treasures.

FILLING OUT YOUR INDUSTRIAL VISIT (IV) SCHEDULE Several times one finds tiny blocks of free time amidst IVs or business trips and one wants to make maximum use of it by meeting people relevant to their business, or people one may have met only online. LinkedIn places the selection process in your hand: • Do an advanced search 14 Youth Incorporated ║ NOVEMBER 2012

• Choose the industries, enter keywords that will identify the people you’d like to meet, then select the ‘Located in or near’ option • Choose the country you’re visiting and the zip code • Change sort order to ‘degrees away from you’ instead of ‘keyword relevance’. This gives better luck setting up meetings with first and second-degree contacts. Send an introduction request to the ones you find appealing, saying that you’re going to be in town on a particular date and would like to meet them.

YES, I GOT THE JOB VIA LINKEDIN The novel buzz among employers is to pick candidates from the e-platform. Viacom18 Careers' page gives a good idea of this. Having adopted LinkedIn Corporate Solutions, several companies have paid huge bucks for subscriptions, access to over 8.5 million professionals, enhanced searches for candidates and job listing packages. While they post employeehunting feeds, you need to be equipped with apt job hunting skills. and display your best. • Use LinkedIn to scream “Gimme

• •

• •

that job!” Hardik Bhatia, who recently got an esteemed job in a production house via Linkedin, advises, “focus on specific companies as it creates a target for you rather than a loafer trolling on naukri.com.” Search using the company name to find current and ex-employees, their background, education, experience. This gives you an idea of your chances to get recruited Job hunting has turned into a ‘contact’ sport. You need connections from the company you want a job in. Current employees could recommend you for a job. Employers are keen on employee referrals as they come from internal trustworthy mouths. Feel confident to invite, add or write to current or ex-employees of your preferred company. At most, what could happen? No response! Enter the ‘hidden job market’ – internal connections can help job seekers discover open positions before they're advertised. Expand the network of people you are already connected to. They need to know you are on the job prowl. Before writing to any company, make your Linkedin profile gain calories. A meaty profile is the first impression you set in front of the company. Use the Q & A feature on LinkedIn to concretely and clearly display all the experience you have. If you’re HIGHLY active and promotional, LinkedIn may hire you to promote them!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR PROFILE GAIN CALORIES • Incorporate an insight into your profile, not just merely what you have done. But don’t be a fool and reveal confidential details. • Include keywords throughout to make searches easy for employers. • Fret it out to grab recommendations and important connections. • Join groups related to your interests/desired jobs. • Make a large chunk of your profile public so the non-LinkedInites can view it without needing to create an account. • Answer questions. It’s free. • Use your LinkedIn URL in your e-mail signatures. • Post updates that make you look like a professional. No professional wants to know about your loo visits or dates. • Upgrade your account if you feel the need. You can choose the business, business plus or executive options, or stick to the basic account and still manage to get linked to the best. INCORPORATE TWITTER IN LINKEDIN You can integrate Twitter tweets in LinkedIn. This is done through an application called Tweets. It’s not rocket science to install it, but you need to pay attention to the settings. There are a zillion users with a zillion updates on LinkedIn per day. These updates typically come from Twitter and are unhealthy for your brand. The setting you want to use is to only share tweets on LinkedIn when you use the hashtag #in inside Twitter. This allows you to selectively share on LinkedIn as opposed to bombing your network with conversational unLinkedIn stuff. LINKEDIN FOR THE STARTUP ENTREPRENEUR Behind every success story lies major efforts. LinkedIn turns a guide at this point. Finance is the elixir for every startup entrepreneur. Vijay Lakhani, founder of Pro-Care Computer Technology, says “Based

on the meatiness of the entrepreneur’s profile, he can acquire ongoing support for his finance just by a few clicks.” This entrepreneur would also need HR and operations departments and could hire agencies to help if he doesn’t have the resources in-house. These agencies are all under one roof in LinkedIn with services and criteria clearly defined. BUILD YOUR BRAND Promoting a brand needs advertising and that needs bucks. Few ways to do it for free are status updates, posting in groups that match your target audience. Use the events section to spread the buzz. Another novel way is to use a SlideShare or Google presentation where you put your presentation, integrate it with your LinkedIn profile and share with your connections. This can go viral! yi NOVEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 15

YOUTH INC RESEARCHES, AGGREGATES AND RANKS THE BEST BUSINESS SCHOOLS IN THE WORLD

W

elcome to the Youth Incoporated, DNA and Rediff.com Global Business School Rankings 2012. In attempt to identify, gauge and classify the best business schools in the world that provide not just quality education but also an overall satisfying experience, we present to you the fruits of our research: the top 100 schools for an MBA (full-time), the top 50 for degrees in Finance, Management and Marketing, and the top 50 schools for an online MBA. In a throwback to the Global University Rankings we did last year, the first two top schools here – Harvard and Stanford – are verily the same as in our last effort, proving that these schools are truly the best at everything they do. Running down the list, there are both familiar and new names, indicating a rise in the number of premier B-schools in the world. Some are surprise inclusions in terms of their higher ranking and some are shockers because of their lower ranking. But what is most telling in our research is that sole business institutions are now no more the hallowed temples for an MBA; multi-programme universities are fast becoming the chosen destinations for students.

A new player (at least in developing countries) in the realm of business education is the online MBA. Given the pressures of a professional life and the need to constantly update one’s knowledge and skills, MBA programmes have begun being conducted 100% online and are gaining popularity. However, the leaders in this initiative are not the old guard but the relatively younger schools. Read more on our analysis of an online MBA degree on pages 24 and 25. What sets apart these rankings is that credence has been given to responses from the institutions, the students, alumni and recruiters, giving our data the depth of multiple perspectives. While they were quizzed on the usual value for money and programme quality concerns, students also had to give their feedback on the diversity in their classrooms, career services available to them and exchange programmes in their schools. We also relied heavily on recruiter satisfaction to see how the institutes stacked up in the real world.

THE INDIA STORY

One Indian institute has made it to the top 10 and four in the top 100, but let us not feel self-congratulatory yet. Let us instead ask, “Why only four?” China has five schools in the top 100, one more than us, but let’s take a closer look at them: Peking University (rank 45), for instance, reported that the percentage of Western students studying in their full-time Beijing International MBA programme increased from 5 per cent in 2006 to 35 per cent in 2011. On graduating, their students were offered jobs from over 250 companies as diverse as JP Morgan, Apple and Louis Vuitton. As for their faculty, they have more than 40 professors from North America and Europe. This throws light on some problems plaguing Indian B-schools. We do not have a diverse, international student body or faculty, perhaps because we still place emphasis on rote learning when the rest of the world does not. Where are our non-IIMs? The IIMs alone cannot be serious competition to the likes of Harvard and LBS. Other Indian B-schools must be raised to that standard. India is a great place to study, but it needs a lot of work to be recognised as such internationally.

T

here has been a drastic increase in the number of students opting for online courses in recent times. According to Ambient Insight, the global e-learning market is said to reach a whopping `2.5 lakh crore (about US$47.2 billion) by 2014. Most prospective B-school students hesitate to commit to a two-year programme due to lack of funds, lack of time and preference for work experience. These students are

choosing online MBA programs over conventional courses to meet their requirements. WHAT IT INVOLVES Pursuing an online MBA degree allows you to receive your study material from an international, local or well known university without leaving your computer. You can contact your professors and other students through web chat sessions, Skype calls and so on.

Some institutes also arrange discussion meetings of students from one particular location. Assessments are carried out through periodic online examinations and tests. THE OPTIONS Online MBA programmes: These are taught entirely online and the student need not visit the university for any purpose. Combination MBA programmes: In these programmes, the learning is

divided into online sessions as well as classroom sessions. THE BENEFITS The biggest pro of pursuing an online MBA is that it allows you the flexibility of working while studying. Therefore, both your practical and theoretical knowledge witness a simultaneous increase. There is also the significant advantage of making money while you study. Another valuable benefit is that you can implement your learning in your professional life instantly, giving you immediate gratification. There is also the added advantage of owning a global degree, without the extra expenditure. An online MBA is also a viable option for students who want to escape the pressures of competitive exams as it is easier to gain admission for an online course. THE DRAWBACKS The most obvious drawback of the online MBA is the lack of human connect. There is no interaction with fellow students and immediate guidance from professors. There are many other benefits that online MBA students can’t enjoy, such as industry

visits and networking with important people from the industry. Also, an online programme is suited only for people who are disciplined and selfmotivated as classroom pressures are not present in such an education. BOTTOM LINE If you have an online MBA degree and are competing with someone with a campus degree, you might probably be the second choice for the job. However, if you have both work

experience and an online degree, your chances will improve significantly. Online MBAs are thus more suited for people who have attained posts they don’t want to give up, but are still keen on updating their knowledge and keeping up with developments. Most importantly, one needs to ensure that the college offering the online MBA is recognised by national accrediting bodies (these differ from country to country). RANKING METHODOLOGY

HOW DID WE CHOOSE INSTITUTES?

W

e chose 700 institutes across the world after having discussions with students, recruiters and faculty. We also consulted professional organizations such as AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB. Youth Inc’s Research Unit (YRU) also studied domestic rankings in various countries to find the best institutes. All the institutes were sent identical surveys. We then contacted current students, alumni, as well as local and international recruiters and gathered specific information about the institutes. NOVEMER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 33

_COVER STORY

FACTORS CONSIDERED

1

Recruiter perception – Identical surveys were sent to recruiters worldwide. The recruiters were asked to rate the institutes that they were most likely to recruit from. The recruiters were also asked to rate the students they have recruited from specific business schools on several criteria including leadership potential and strategic thinking.

7

Campus support – We asked the institutes, current students and alumni to select the different types of assistance provided by the student office or a similar body on campus. Our list was selected after surveying students across different campuses worldwide.

3

Diversity of faculty – The institutes were asked to report the total number of faculty on campus and what percentage of the faculty was international, hold doctorate degrees and accredited with their own publishing material. Gender diversity of the faculty was also considered.

4

Programme innovation – We considered the different ways to construct degree programmes as well as the choice students have in terms of selecting electives.

5

Innovation in teaching methodologies – Institutes were asked to select different teaching methodologies that we considered innovative. Some of these included company visits, dual or multiple majors and course collaborations between different departments at the institute. Our list was selected after surveying students across different campuses worldwide.

6

Value for money – We considered students’ and alumni’s opinions on whether a particular school was perceived as ‘value for money’. We also asked institutes to state the percentage of students who received some sort of funding from the institutes. 34 Youth Incorporated ║ NOVEMBER 2012

Career service – We asked the institutes, current students and alumni about the availability and functioning of a career service cell and how active such a service was for the students. We also considered what percentage of students were actually placed through the institute’s career

9

Exchange programmes – Institutes were asked to report the percentage of students that opted for exchange programmes. We also considered the exchange students present on the institute’s campus.

10 Student satisfaction – Current students and alumni were asked to rate their institutes on various factors including career services, attitude of staff and professors, location and course content. ACTUAL METHODOLOGY

We sent invitations to 700 institutes. Institutes were provided a password using which they could send us their completed survey online. They were asked to answer questions relating to full-time faculty, career services, student and programme information and all the factors listed above. We contacted current students and alumni of the institutes and

asked them to rate specific statements which were pertaining to the factors we considered in this ranking. Many institutes preferred to send the survey links to their students and alumni directly. Over 8000 recruiters were sent emails with a survey. The recruiter list was prepared from the responses of the institutes and also included internationally well known recruiters. The recruiters were asked to enlist institutes that they were likely to recruit from. Each factor was made up of a set of questions. The total percentage attributed to that factor was based on the average score of the responses multiplied by the assigned weightage. We then totalled the score from all factors and sorted the scores from highest to lowest. The school(s) with the highest score was ranked first.

NOT JUST NUMBERS!

After we received the total computed scores for the institutes, we subjectively analysed the data provided by the institutes, current students,

alumni and recruiters. If we found discrepancies in the satisfaction scores and the subjective descriptions, we omitted the data.

INSTITUTES THAT DID NOT FILL OUT THE SURVEY REPORTS IN TIME

Out of 700 institutes that were contacted, 120 institutes did not complete the survey on time or did not respond. We used publicly available information on the institutes to include them in our ranking. We also contacted current students, alumni and recruiters of these institutes and compared the data we received with the data from institutes that did participate.

SPECIAL NOTES

Masters in Finance – The programs include the pre-experience as well as the post-experience Masters programmes. The ranking also includes the programmes which are recently established. Masters in Management – Certain Masters in Management programmes with specialisations are also included in the ranking. Masters in Marketing – Combination courses of marketing with communication and other fields are also included in the ranking. Online MBA – Certain factors such as campus support and exchange programmes were omitted in the factors considered for the ranking. yi NOVEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 35

Quick puzzle: spot the uniquely Indian words and phrases that are not used in English anywhere else in the world –

Dear Sir, I have a doubt. Since I was out of station for two weeks, I developed loose motion because of which I cannot come to the office for a few days. I believe the Director wanted to prepone the board meeting but I cannot attend it because of my illness. Will you be able to persuade him to postpone it instead? Kindly do the needful. Regards… Let’s check your answers: doubt, out of station, loose motion, prepone, kindly do the needful. Confused how that’s possible seeing as we use these phrases regularly? Don’t be. While they are not used internationally, they are not grammatically incorrect either. Rather,

they have their roots in archaic British English, which is not surprising since it was the British who introduced the language to India by way of a century plus of colonisation. But the language they brought with them was the 18th and 19th century version of English which they have since stopped using themselves. For us Indians, however, it is the mainstay of our parlance. If a British or American person were to reword that above letter, how would they do it? • Doubt – question/query • Out of station – out of town (this term was used during the British era when army officers were posted at a ‘station’, so when they went on holiday, they were ‘out of station’). • Loose motion – diarrhoea (or they might just say sick and not specify how) • Prepone – reschedule earlier (this word was never part of the English language and has only been recently added to the Oxford Dictionary on

_FOCUS FEATURE

account of its popular usage in India). • Kindly do the needful – antiquated term; has no modern day equivalent. Whether it is wrong that the English we speak has been outdated for over 50 years is debatable. One could argue that since the language itself has had many histories (for instance, Old English, which is the language of the epic poem Beowulf, is nothing like Modern English) in which each version was replaced with a newer one, Indian English too must evolve from its colonial clutches. But the reality is that English today is too vast, too colourful and too disparate to become a single, standardised language. No two countries speak the same kind of English. American and British English are obviously not the same, but neither are Australian English, New Zealand English, South

African English and, of course, Indian English. Each has been influenced by (and has borrowed from) the native and local languages of the respective countries, resulting in a ‘bhel puri’ of a language.

WE ARE SPEAKING THE ENGLISH

The other end of the Indian English spectrum is broken English. Speakers of broken English are usually those who have studied in local language schools; therefore, they speak fluently in the language of instruction, but poorly in English. Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal, is infamous for her broken English. In a television

interview earlier this year, she explained, “We are from the very middle class family. We have not come from the English medium school. We came from our regional languages school.” [sic] She went on to say that as a “commoner”, she naturally spoke the language of the masses, and not English, the language of the elite. There is certainly some truth to her words, at least in her profession where politicians need to connect with the larger population. But how long will English remain the language of the elite in India? Given the popularity of English-medium schools and the acknowledgement of English as an ‘empowering’ language for job-seeking youths, English – Indian English or maybe even broken Indian English – might become the language of the masses soon enough. yi

_CAREER WATCH

Keeping up

appearances

If networking is one of your biggest strengths, a career in public relations might be the right fit for you, writes Vatsala Chhibber

I

n today’s world, concern about one’s public image is not limited to celebrities. Various organisations have realised the value of ‘looking good’ and are taking significant steps to preserve and enhance their image. To help them realise this, they rely on the sharp, well-trained mind of a public relations officer. It is a well-known fact that our attention spans are diminishing by the minute, thus increasing pressure on companies to stand out from the clutter. It is the job of public relations professionals to ensure that their clients are seen and heard frequently and effectively. In essence, public relations officers

are responsible for handling the communication flow to and from their clients. A PR professional needs to think beyond the conventional route of advertising to communicate their client’s message to target customers. The growth opportunities in the field of public relations are immense. Aashish Hiramanek, who has more than 15 years of experience in the field of public relations, says, “PR today is a full-fledged part of the overall marketing outlay of any company from almost every field. A PR professional is involved in strategising on every aspect of communications, guest relations, event planning, media, sponsorships, spokesperson, promotions, contests, specialised shoots and much more.”

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

In the field of public relations, one uses the media (this includes print, television, the Internet, etc) as a tool to gain publicity for one’s clients. Public relations professionals use various methods to promote their clients or their products/services such as sending ‘press kits’, creating newsletters, organising events,

workshops, etc. Depending on your area of specialisation, your job responsibilities will vary. For example, if you handle public relations for a celebrity, you will be responsible for who they give interviews to, where they make appearances, even what causes they support! In the case of

Meghna Shah, co-founder of Tandem Communications says, “Public Relations goes far beyond just getting names of brands and articles published in the paper; it’s about engaging available resources to create a lot of word-of-mouth publicity for clients. In today’s market we offer the client cost-effective solutions such as innovative personalized mailers instead of events, sales driven events, sponsorships which are mutually beneficial, etc.”

If you enjoy networking and meeting new people, a job in public relations will ensure your cell phone is brimming with contacts. Also, people in this profession also have access to exclusive events, parties and sometimes juicy pieces of gossip. This profession also demands innovative thinking, so if you value a creative work environment, this might be the right job for you. PR professionals also have the liberty of switching streams. You can transition from working for an NGO to handing a fashion brand, hence slimming down chances of professional stagnation.

CHALLENGES

One of the biggest challenges in this field is dealing with negative publicity. When the popular chocolate brand Cadbury faced fire due to the issue of worms being found in some of their merchandise, their public relations team had to jump to the company’s recue and regain the trust of the company’s customers. Their solution was to use the credibility of celebrities such as Amitabh Bachchan and Amir Khan to leverage the brand’s public image. Therefore, when dealing with such situations you need to be quick in coming up with solutions and taking suitable action. Crisis management is the trickiest and most challenging aspect of public relations. If PR professionals cause any

azillion descriptions as to what installation art is are embedded on the artistic front. Installation art is created, constructed or installed on a site and this art converses in a dialogue with the surrounding features and materials. Installations envelop the viewer in the space of the work, whereas sculptures are viewed from the outside as a self-contained arrangement. Kala Ghoda, the art

district of Mumbai, featured several earlier this year, establishing that this is now a sizzling career. Arzan Khambatta, whose profession as an architect was replaced by sculpting, continues to woo the world with his installations and sculptures. Among his bestselling artwork exhibited at premium art galleries, he considers Throne, featuring Mr Bachchan on the KBC hot seat, a personal favourite. He defines an installation as 3D art which

is quick, uses the most basic materials and even temporary, to an extent. He feels sculptures have been mixed up with installations now.

COURSE STRUCTURE

After clearing Class 12, one can opt to study art. A Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)/Bachelor of Visual Arts (BVA) can be pursued (both the terms mean the same). One can then

broaden their horizons by studying for a master’s degree – MFA/MVA, or gain work experience with an professional installation artist. Students can chose a specialisation in the following creative expressions: sculpture, painting, applied art or art history. Installation works fall under the sculpture stream. Artistic modelling and casting of metal/clay/stones is taught. 3D artworks are created that are often site-specific. However, all top artists haven’t followed this structure. Many, pursuing different careers yet being extremely artistic, have got a break and worked under renowned artists and acquired further learning. As said, art has several expressions and structures. Arzan Khambatta says, “For me, it never started off as a career. It started just as a hobby, and then slowly down the line it became an obsession and I became so passionate about it that I was sure I only wanted to follow that.”

JOB FOCUS AND ROLES

Installation artists are hired by several companies, museums, galleries, toy industries and even the film industry to beautify atmospheres, mould figures and provide artistic advice for film direction and sets. One could work independently too, developing their collections like many successful installation artists.

REMUNERATION FROM SCRAPTURES

Do I need to tell you about the installations and sculptures priced at lakhs? The artist’s art and space of display determine his earnings. Arzan’s early works were out of scrap which he coined ‘Scraptures’. When asked if he is worried about his work gaining recognition, he confidently replies, “I only knew what I wanted to do, the rest followed.” His works like The Moghul and RAVANA are mind-boggling. Artist Vivan Sundaram has used refuse from garbage in his installations, whereas installation artist Subodh

How will you get the 3 K hans (Shahrukh, Salman and Amir) to star in the same f ilm? Sudarshan: Getting the three K hans under the same banner is close to impossible. They won’t come for money, the fame, or for the need of a blockbuster. The only catalyst that can get the three together would be some banner which commands their unparalleled respect in Bolly wood such as Yash Raj Productions.

Tanishta: I would rather not have the three K hans star in the same film in fear of feeding their egos.

ROUND 2

Do you think there should be a minimum attendance requirement in colleges? I don’t think there should be any minimum requirements and should not be allocated for attendance either. I think that teachers should be able to command the attention and respect of students so that they come to classes on their own. College is a transition from the protected environment of school to the real life where an individual has to exercise his/ her own discretion and come to their own conclusions. Attending classes, I believe, is one choice that the students should be allowed to make themselves.

Colleges should have a minimum attendance only when the teachers are qualified and dedicated enough so that the students do not have to attend extra coaching classes. Attending a college where there is no quality teaching is a waste of time for its students.

ROUND 3

How would you discourage people from bribing off icials? I don’t remember who came up with this idea (it’s not mine) that we should legalise bribe-giving. Currently, both giving and taking bribes is a punishable offence. So if you legitimise bribe-giving but not bribe-taking , then the one who is being coerced to do so will be able to report the issue. This will be a potent weapon at the disposal of citizens, particularly the youth, who are taking such issues ver y seriously.

As long as officials accept bribe, today’s youth will manage to get things done their way. Spreading awareness and providing the youth with an efficient system to complain against corrupt officials can help.

The Festive Side of

Education

T

By Nisha JamVwal

he electric air of crowds thronging festivals, focused arguing space and detail, preparing, planning, plotting, preening, graphic tees and ragged jeans, tiny shorts, collared bangs, heated career discussions, ramp walks and debates – I never cease to be enthralled, charmed and wanting more when I visit college festicals as a jury member. One of my more endearing evenings was when I judged Sophia College’s annual fashion show. What a grand show the girls had put up! But I disagreed with the putting down of the kids’ design by one co-jury member. You can critique the detailing, the finish, the putting together of a design, but not the creative thought of a designer. As a designer myself, I believe that a design is about the flights of fancy and the imaginativeness that seize you. If you look at the outlandish designs that some established designers in India and beyond have put on the ramp, you will understand that it is about fantasy and flight of the mind. Especially at this stage of late teen years, I believe it is important to encourage and allow young minds to explore, create and, most importantly, to dream. Their motto should be “It’s not about the colours, or the strokes, it’s about the art that lies in you. Bring it out.” Kaleidoscope, that has been going strong for 26 years, is a great platform for Sophia College kids to unleash their creativity, dream their dreams and prepare for the world. Go and conquer it kids! I believe in you! Young minds have a plethora of ideas; I was impressed by them at Talaash, Jai Hind College’s management festival, where the theme was Voldemort. The large numbers that participate (including students from cities like Pune, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai) indicates its success. When I walk into the auditorium, the cheers give me an adrenalin rush that lasts all year. Every year, their Cultural Day astounds me with new themes and ideas in fashion, drama, dance and even the famed war of the DJs. SIES College of Commerce and Economics hosted Fantasies. The highlight was judging with Cyrus ‘Bakra King’ Broacha and his pet pup, Kali. I wished I’d brought along Ganeemat, my Lhasa Apso. We judged the fashion show and shared our love for animals with the students. I was then taken by surprise when we had to dance on stage with the college mascot, Naidu. Going to HR College, KC College, Poddar College and Garodia College of Design – all where young, vibrant minds put forth their fashion extravaganzas and design projects – has been an invigorating experience. The most difficult part is the ‘judging’ that has to be done at the end. I see the passion and effort that goes into everything, yet there must be one winner. Even though there is a first, second and third, all those who took the gumption to present, walk the ramp and run the race, metaphorically speaking, are all winners to me. yi Read more of Nisha’s point of view at http://nishajamvwal. blogspot.com and follow her on Twitter @nishjamvwal.

An bachelor’s degree in dentistry (BDS) is offered at 14 UK schools. Admission to these dental schools requires high academic scores in science subjects, especially Biology and Chemistry (at least 85% overall). They will also accept students with a lower score if they have completed a year’s undergraduate course in science. Most require students to take the UKCAT (UK Clinical Aptitude Test) a year prior to starting the course. Several dental schools will also interview applicants. UK universities accept school-leaving scores from recognised Indian boards (CBSE, ICSE) in addition to GCSE and International Baccalaureate (IB) scores. As several schools in India have IB and GCSE curriculum, your son need not study class 11 and 12 in the UK. Typically, a BDS course in the UK is for 5 years. Some dental schools even accept BSc graduates on a reduced course time (4 years). Please note that the number of international students admitted is usually not more than 4 or 5, making admissions very competitive. Applicants must be proficient in the English language, the minimum acceptable level being: • GCSE English Language: grade B or above • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English: grade B or above • International English language Testing (IELTS) score of 7.0, with not less than 6.5 in any component • TOEFL score of 610+ (paper based) or 250+ (computer based) or 100+ (internet based) Tuition fee for non-EU students is £20,000-£35,000 a year (`17-30 lakhs). Also, budget for expenses covering accommodation, food, clothing, transport, etc at £7,500-£10,000 per year (` 6.5-8.5 lakhs). Applications for the Dental programme are made through UCAS (www.ucas.ac.uk). The application deadline is typically in mid-October.

DENTISTRY IN THE UK Q: My son is in Class X and wants to go for a BDS degree and that too from the UK. Kindly let me know the right way of getting admission in a dental surgery course in the UK. Will he have to go there for his Class XI and XII studies also? Abhishek Talwar

The Graduate Record Examination or GRE is a standardised test used by universities in Englishspeaking countries for applicants to postgraduate (known as graduate programs in the US) and doctoral programs across disciplines, including business and management. The GRE scores are also used for awarding scholarships and fellowships. The GRE measures verbal reasoning (VR), quantitative reasoning (QR), critical thinking (CT) and analytical writing skills (AW). The skills are not related to any specific field of study. In August 2011, the GRE changed its test pattern, scoring format and its name. The new test is called GRE Revised Test. The new scoring format reports scores for the VR and QR sections from 130 to 170 in 1-point increments with corresponding percentile ranks, while the AW score ranges from 0 to 6 in half-point increments. In the old format, VR and QR scores were each reported on a scale ranging from 200 to 800 in 10-point increments. Other changes are: • The GRE is no longer a computer-adaptive test on a question-by-question basis, but instead based on the performance in a section. • Less reliance on out of context vocabulary, no antonyms and analogies. Instead, emphasis on reading comprehension. • Flexibility to edit or change answers, skip questions and go back to them later within a section • On-screen calculator for the QR section • New types of questions in the VR and QR sections e.g. fill in the blanks-type without providing multiple options, or providing more than one response, so candidates can better demonstrate what they know. The GRE Revised Test scores are valid for five years. There is a US$175 fee for taking the test. For more information, visit www.ets.org/gre. NOVEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 45

MBA OF EXCELLENCE THE

Sydney Finkelstein, strategy and leadership professor at Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College, talks about ethical leadership skills and more Q. With many students pursuing MBA, what scope does it have on completion? There is a worldwide war for credentials going on among smart, upwardly mobile people. With India and China producing great talent and opening up their markets, there are huge opportunities. An MBA degree provides skills, connections and the mindset to succeed. But you can have all the credentials in the world and still be unsuccessful. It is critical to ethically apply what you know, learn from your own mistakes and take advantage of opportunities. There is no replacement for world-class education, but education by itself is insufficient for managerial success. It is the

combination of experience, training and ethical leadership. Q. What advice do you have for youngsters wanting to pursue MBA? An MBA is a powerful degree and I encourage young people to pursue it. The difference between a top school like Tuck and an average school is significant. At Tuck, we offer the full gamut of basic training in functional areas of business, and we also place a high value on developing leadership skills, involving students in realworld projects, developing team skills (Tuck School’s hallmark) and making effective ethical decisions. The environment at Tuck pushes people to raise their game while interacting effectively with diverse students. Q. What does the research centre at Tuck School of Business foster? Top executives today are often more qualified than in the past. The biggest reason for this is market globalisation for executive talent. I really do believe that the most important individual characteristic of great managers is the ability to adapt in real-time to change. The hallmark of the greatest

46

managers is adaptability in the face of unexpected events. Q. Tell us a little about the management courses and teaching styles at Tuck. There are five different courses in the first year programme that are leadership or management related. Courses in Statistics, Microeconomics, and Operations address real-world problems from the viewpoint of managers, leaders, CEOs. Tuck is known for its general management excellence and is highly interactive in all its courses. As the first graduate business school in the world, Tuck has helped develop many leaders. As opposed to most business schools, full-time tenure-track faculty member teaches in the MBA program. We bring our best teachers to the classroom. Q. What is the crux of your book Why Smart Executives Fail? If we don’t carefully examine what goes wrong in organisations then we are missing a huge opportunity to learn from those mistakes. I wrote the book to gain a deeper understanding of leadership and organisational breakdowns. The causes of failure are not executional errors or simple explanations that question executive qualities. We allow our personal biases to influence the decisions we make and ignore feedback. It is all these very personal weaknesses that lead to failure. yi

19 year-old Parimarjan Negi, India’s youngest chess grandmaster who bagged the title at 13, talks to Youth Inc about his journey, from being gifted a chessboard to winning esteemed titles

Q. What prompted you to enter the arena of chess and ‘checkmate kings’? Chess was one of my hobbies from the very beginning. I would play board games like Chess and Ludo, but it all started when I received a gift – a magnetic chessboard. The magnetic factor made it all the more exciting. I learnt the rules and gradually it become more than only a hobby. Q. How did you feel when you won the title ‘India’s youngest chess GM’ at an age when 13 year-olds are occupied with playtime? I felt a huge relief. I ensured not to brag about it to my friends (many of them didn’t even know what ‘chess grandmaster’ meant then). Q. What pressures and challenges have you faced since your journey in the field of sports commenced? For me, recovering from bad tournaments – be it at any level – is definitely one challenge. Being motivated needs efforts. Keeping up my motivation level up in back-toback tournaments is quite tough. Q. Who stands as your role model? Many known Indian players, but I don’t idolise any chess player. I don't like to idolise. However, I’ve learnt a lot from Andre Agassi and his biography. Q. What do you have to say about World chess champion Viswanathan Anand? He is definitely the reason behind the popularity of chess in our country.

He is one of the people I have looked up to and will continue to do so. I want to compete with him in a future game. Q. How is your day prior to a tournament? What preps do you undertake? Tournaments last for 10 days with several rounds. I am a little tensed prior to a game, but I need to be focused. If I have an afternoon game, I need a two-hour morning prep. It’s more about controlling emotions and not getting distracted. I indulge in self-talk, motivating myself while keeping distractions away. Q. How is the governmental finance and support for young Indian chess grandmaster aspirants? Since I won the title ‘India’s youngest chess grandmaster’, the support provided to me was very good. The sports ministry does aid a lot and the NSDF scheme (National Skill Development Corporation) has always been a crucial support for me. Q. How did you cope with your studies at 13 amidst all your tournaments? It was never a problem. My work didn’t clash with my studies. I would take a month or two off from work during my exams. My school always

had been very supportive. However, currently I’m entirely focusing on chess. Q. What are your plans for the future? I am currently a professional chess player, but I want to be the one on the top. Also, I need to imbibe a consistency in my performances. Q. What advice would you want to give Sergey Karjakin who won the title of ‘World’s youngest chess GM’?

What is your advice for budding chessmasters? Play chess like any other board game. Don’t take it as a tedious task, play it as if it were a hobby. It does help in aspects like concentration and focus. Q. What are some mantras to deal with defeat? Intially when I would face defeat, I would go crazy. But gradually I realised and learnt that no matter how bad a defeat is, it is advisable to leave it behind oneself and look forward. One should never think ‘I’m the only one who has lost’, the best players have also witnessed defeat and overcome it. yi

This curiosity made me go and ask each and every crew member on the set, right from a light boy to the cinematographer and the film director, about various things. They would tell me or rather indirectly teach me small things and press reporters wrote in the papers that one day I might become a film director. But never did they nor I nor my parents guessed that I would end up a film director at the age of nine.

THE 9-YEAR-OLD FILMMAKER

I directed my first film at the age of nine. The movie was Care of Footpath. It is the success story of a slum boy without an address who wants to go

to school. He struggles with getting educated and writing his 7th grade exam at nine years (which can be written only at 13 years) without going to school a single day. The film was shot in 55 days over 6-8 months and won 11 prestigious international awards. Through this journey there were a lot of challenges. I couldn’t learn things I wanted to like sound engineering and film editing because professional studios couldn’t spare the time to teach me. Lots of people didn’t believe I was directing Care of Footpath at nine, so the press came to the sets to see if I was really directing or if it was just a stunt.

DIRECTING JACKIE DADA AND KALLU MAMA

Directing Jackie dada and Sourabh Shukla-ji was fabulous. They never treated me as a kid, instead they treated me as they would any other film director, especially Jackie dada who would call me chota director. I met Jackie Shroff at an event in Mumbai. After hearing about Care of Footpath he was very touched. He told me that he came from footpaths himself and faced lots of difficulty. Later, he asked me for a role in my film. I thought he was joking, but after I returned to Bangalore, he actually called me and asked, “Kya role diya hai mujhe?” I was shocked. I sat down with my screen writers and we finally decided to give him the role of the Chief Minister in Care of Footpath. After watching Sathya and seeing Sourabh Shukla play Kallu Mama, I decided that I wanted him in my film. It was a good experience working with such a senior scriptwriter himself and a senior actor with much experience.

ENTERING THE GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS

Getting into the books of the Guinness World Records was one of the greatest things that happened to me. In 1973, a 13-year-old boy from Netherlands called Sydney Ling was the world’s

youngest director of a professionally made feature film. After 33 years, in 2006, I replaced Sydney Ling’s name with mine. I was proud when the name of my motherland, my country, India, was written in the Guinness World Records. Apart from this, Oprah Winfrey featured me in the top 15 genius children of the world and I was recognized by Singapore Media Corp as one of Asia’s seven genius children.

MASTER’S DEGREE AT 16

I’m 16 years old and currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Multimedia & Animation from Karnataka State Open University. I’m the first person in Karnataka to be given an age relaxation to directly take up a higher course. Though I missed more than 50% of my classes, I managed to score 93% in my 10th grade! When I was younger and acting in films, I carried my notes and books to the film-sets and studied during breaks and while travelling. I love studying and my favourite subjects are Mathematics, Science and, of course, English!

FUTURE PROJECTS

I’m acting in a movie called Teenage which releases this month. It is a high school musical about a teenager’s confusions, attractions, distractions, infatuations and zero solutions. My second film is to start next year and will be in Hindi and English in Stereoscopic 3D, a technology I learnt even before Avatar hit the theatres. After becoming one of India’s first stereographers and studying 3D technology intensively, I want to research and develop holography and optical illusions, which is expected to used in tomorrow’s filmmaking. One of my dreams is to make a superhero movie. There are movies on Spiderman, Superman and Batman, but if we look at Indian mythology, our superheroes were enormous. Even the word Avatar is derived from Sanskrit. yi Read the rest of the interview on www.youthincmag.com NOVEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 51

aking puffs, turning into a Devdas, getting high on weed – these are some life threatening habits that have made their mark in the addiction industry. With stress levels elevating, bizarre addictions are also rising in sync. The addicted person is psychologically dependent on his source of addiction and is cob-webbed like a victim. Self-harm is present in every addiction, ranging from mild restlessness to death.

ADDICTION TO GAMING

There is no P for Pause here. Daynight-homework-office-toiletwherever-anywhere gaming is what the gaming addict wants to pursue. The gamer is overwhelmed with thoughts of gaming while engaging in non-gaming activities. The gamer lies about time spent gaming and feels anxious or irritable when not gaming. Most addicted gamers are male and under the age of 30. The act of gaming elevates dopamine levels, a feel-good, mood altering chemical. 54 Youth Incorporated ║ NOVEMBER 2012

LEVEL4 \ Xioyi left a suicide note saying he wanted “to join the heroes of the game he worshipped.” The 13-year-old then jumped off a tall building after playing World of Warcraft for 36 hours straight. LEVEL 5 \ A three-year-old Korean girl

TOP PLASTIC FREAKS A famous addict is New York socialite Jocelyn Wildenstein who has spent over $4,000,000 on cosmetic surgery over the years. Jocelyn and her hubby underwent a “scandalous” divorce and it is claimed that she thereafter had infinite surgeries performed on her to look beautiful and please him.

In several cases, this addiction is the result of Body Dysmorphic Disorder, which is an unhealthy and excessive preoccupation with one’s entire physical appearance or specific body part.

ONIOMANIA: ADDICTION TO SHOPPING

Shopaholics are ready with their reason – “But it was on sale!” When a person’s concept of retail therapy goes way beyond what is constituted as normal, it leads to compulsive shopping. This involves excessive time and money spent shopping, lying about or hiding the purchases and short periods of euphoria followed by long spells of feeling empty – even after shopping loads and purchasing luxuries and things one can’t afford. Such people fall into debt traps because of lack of self-control. Many of their purchases remain unopened or unused.

Michael Jackson’s mother admitted to Oprah Winfrey that her son was addicted to plastic surgery. The actual cause of his addiction isn’t known – whether it was to not look like his abusive father, to not want his skin condition Vitiligo to leave him like a “spotted cow”, or to not have his ethnicity affect his booming career.

TRICHOTILLOMANIA: COMPULSIVE HAIR PULLING

These addicts pull out their own facial, body and scalp hair and derive a sense of pleasure. Despite getting bruised or developing rashes, the addict doesn’t cease. If the urge is intense, they may also resort to pulling their pet’s hair, someone else’s hair or carpet strands. The illness is diagnosed only when the addict goes to the doctor to seek treatment for another ailment. The doctor notices the hair strands aren’t being shed from the roots but broken midway, thus guessing the person has trichotillomania.

HAIR CLICKS AND FLICKS

• An Austrian girl indulged in the act of hair pulling as she liked “the sound of the hair being pulled”. • A 13-year-old American began pulling out her hair compulsively. By the age of 15, she completely lost her eyelashes.

ADDICTION TO PAAN MASALA

This is a desi-specific addiction. In India, it is common practice to eat paan masala after food. It is also considered an aphrodisiac. It is a custom to offer paan masala to a newly married couple before they retire to bed. It is believed that it adds

to love making. However, overeating paan masala mitgates the digestion and sexual factors and becomes a harmful addiction. In several cases, people who experimented with a wee bit of paan masala got hooked on to it instantly for life. The modalities to ban paan masala are currently being worked out in several states of India.

KILLING MASALA TALES

• An addict who has developed oral cancer still continues to consume paan masala in the morning before going to the toilet, after breakfast, while travelling to the office, after lunch, during tea breaks, after dinner at home and before going to sleep. • For one addict, paan masala had caused genotoxicity, the deletion of genetic material from his cells. Doctors informed him that if he would have a child, it would affect the infant.

ADDICTION TO TATTOOS AND BODY PIERCINGS

A little butterfly puttering on the ankle with a cob web adorning your shoulder doesn’t mean you are addicted. But if it replaces your normal skin colour, you are addicted. The adrenaline hormone is released in response to pain. Tattoo/ body piercing addicts are adrenalin junkies. Their relentless pursuit of an adrenaline rush leads them to get tattoos/piercings. Endorphins, natural pain relievers, flood the body in response to the pain. They create a natural high, like orgasms, and the

Loss of identification and a lack of self-esteem in oneself or the human race also lead many to become addicted to body modifications as extreme as changing their face. Excruciatingly painful acts follow and these addicts obtain pleasure from the pain involved in tattoo/body piercings. Their intent is to get rid of their face, probably in an attempt to not look remotely human any more. yi

THE HUMAN TIGER BAGS THE AWARD! Dennis Avner – or Stalking Cat, as he prefers to call himself – has gone as far as to file his teeth into fangs, have his top lip surgically split, embed several piercings on the interiors as well as exteriors of his body and undergo extensive facial surgery to turn himself into a human tiger. A former navy sonar technician, he began these intense modifications to his person after a discussion with a native chief who told him that he should “ follow the ways of the tiger”. Avner has attached his whiskers to the facial piercings on either side of his nose. He has touched the zenith of bizarre acts wherein his diet has also altered. Avner enjoys climbing trees and makes it a priority to eat meat every day, just as a tiger would. The meat should be as close to raw as possible or at the temperature the animal would be if it was just killed. Avner says “I’m seeing a few women at the moment. They understand that being a tiger is more important to me than humanity, which is difficult for many women to cope with.” NOVEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 57

_RELATIONSHIPS

seem bearable. So on your third date, a romantic dinner, you watch your partner eat with a lingering (maybe even creepy) smile on your face. Suddenly, you hear yourself say, “I love you”. Now, if you’re lucky, your beloved might smile and reciprocate. Otherwise, you’ll probably be seeing the bill sooner than you expected.

THE SOLUTION

Firstly, it is not advisable to use the ‘L word’ in the first month of a relationship or until you’re sure your partner feels the same way. But if you have broken the rule, damage control must be swift. If wit is your strong suit, make a quick joke like, “Now that you’ve lost your appetite, I can finish your food.” The other approach is to be direct and say, “I know it’s too early, but it’s just my way of saying I like you and enjoy your company.”

OOPS, IT'S THE ANNOYING FRIEND

That Awkward

THE SITUATION

It’s finally time to introduce your partner to your friends. You are nervous and excited about this meeting (What will my friends say about him/her? Will they get along?). To your relief,

Moment

Relationships are fun, exciting and at times, painfully embarrassing. Vatsala Chhibber helps you squirm out of those dreaded ‘awkward dating moments’ 58 Youth Incorporated ║ NOVEMBER 2012

T

here are three kinds of dates: the good, the bad and the awkward. While the first two determine the beginning or the end of a relationship, the ambiguous nature of the third category can be tricky. Here’s how to save yourself from cringe-worthy situations.

OOPS, I SAID THE ‘L WORD’ THE SITUATION

When you are in a relationship, the air seems fresher, the world seems kinder and even movies like Heroine

your friends and your partner seem to be getting along. Everything is going well until catastrophe strikes! Running out of polite conversation, your overenthusiastic friend says, “I'm so glad you’re dating my friend. She’s been single and lonely for so long!” Uh oh.

THE SOLUTION

Since prevention is better than humiliation, brief your friends before you set up this crucial meeting. If you need to list down incidents and subjects that won’t be discussed, do it. If your friend has made a blunder, talk to your partner about it later. “Don’t mind my

MY MOST AWKWARD DATING MOMENT “My boyfriend is really funny, but that’s not always a good thing. We were having dinner together and he said something that really cracked me up. The result? My uncontrollable laughter resulted in food (and saliva) falling into my lap. I wanted to run away and never see him again. Luckily, he didn’t make me feel uncomfortable about it at the time, but now he pulls my leg about the ‘food fountain’ incident. - Reshma Kumaran, 23

“Once I was on this date with a girl and we really hit it off. She was flirting with me throughout the evening and towards the end of the date, I felt confident enough to lean in for a kiss. The attempt ended in humiliation because she moved and I ended up kissing her ear! We said an uncomfortable goodbye and never met again. I still don’t know how to read mixed signals from women. - Parth Thakkar, 21 friends. They really care for me and tend to exaggerate sometimes,” should be enough. No elaborate excuses; being too concerned might seem suspicious.

OOPS, THE OMNIPRESENT EX THE SITUATION

You and your partner decide to watch a movie together. While browsing through the list of films, you say, “Let's watch a romantic comedy! My ex-boyfriend/girlfriend and I loved watching Woody Allen films together. In fact, he even bought a DVD collection for my birthday.” Congratulations, you have successfully ruined a perfectly romantic evening. The only thing worse would be actually bumping into your ex while you’re with your boyfriend/girlfriend. Or running into your partner’s ex. Now that is awkward.

THE SOLUTION

A happy couple has enough space for only two people, so remember to keep your ex out of the relationship. If you manage to mention your ex during a romantic moment (shame on you), act quickly. Say, “I’m glad we broke up though. How else would I have met you?” Aww. Follow that up with a hug, just to be safe. If you happen to bump into your ex while you’re with your partner, keep it casual. No lingering hugs, no over-familiarity. Include your partner in the conversation, you don’t want him/her feeling left out. Also,

don’t stick around for more than five minutes; “We should leave now to catch the film, but it was nice bumping into you.” (no making plans to ‘catch up’). Now, if you bump into your partner’s ex, as difficult as it may seem, be cordial. Being aloof and arrogant will make things more awkward for everyone involved.

OOPS, WHAT’S THAT SOUND? THE SITUATION

After a quiet, romantic dinner, you and your partner are enjoying some cuddling and snuggling. It’s one of those precious moments when a couple shares a comfortable silence. Finally, you decide to break the silence and whisper sweet nothings into your partner’s ear, but your stomach beats you to it. And no, you can’t blame anybody else this time.

THE SOLUTION

Unfortunately, we can’t always be at our charming best in relationships. Sometimes, our body tries to sabotage romantic moments by breaking wind, creating stomach growls or letting out a burp. While it’s easier for boys to get away with these ‘mishaps’, girls use these moments to judge how much of a gentleman you really are. No amount of opening doors and pulling out chairs will make up for an ungraceful physiological act, so always excuse yourself and laugh about it, if you must. For the ladies, such ungraceful acts

might be mortifying, but keep calm and smile. Luckily, most men have the memory of a goldfish – one innocent smile and everything’s forgotten.

OOPS, I’M A SPY! THE SITUATION

Your partner leaves to visit the restroom and leaves you alone with his/ her cell phone. Your hands are itching to use this opportunity to scroll through his/her messages. You probably won’t find anything fishy, but what’s the harm in making sure, right? You swiftly grab the phone/ laptop and look for incriminating evidence, when suddenly, “What are you doing?” Darn, caught red-handed.

THE SOLUTION

You could say your phone battery is dead and you have to text your parents. This might help you escape the awkward situation, but ask yourself if you’re stuck in an awkward relationship. Such situations will make your partner more secretive and you snoopier, creating an unhealthy relationship. If you’re insecure about something, discuss it with you partner before you decide to play Sherlock Holmes. yi NOVEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 59

_YOUTH ISSUES

money to buy those things. And when there is money to spare, it always disappears quickly. However, nothing is rocket science (except rocket science itself), so managing finances is easier than it seems.

WRITE IT ALL DOWN

Make this a ritual before bed (along with brushing your teeth) – write down how you spend every penny everyday in a notebook. At the end of the month (or week; depends on how often you want to review your spending), tally your expenditure and break it down into different categories – money spent on clothes, on travelling, on food etc. Then identify areas you can cut down on and consciously reduce spending there.

WHERE’S MY

MONEY?! Finding yourself often cashstrapped? Can’t seem to save up to buy that cell phone or cute shoes? Youth Inc guides you on how not just to save money, but also make more with little effort

THE LURE OF MONEY

“Money money money! Always sunny in the rich man’s world,” sang Swedish pop group Abba in 1976. “Money is better than poverty, if only for financial reasons,” said filmmaker Woody Allen in 1975. “If you would be wealthy, think of saving as well as 60 Youth Incorporated ║ NOVEMBER 2012

getting,” said American powerhouse Benjamin Franklin as long ago as 1758. So it seems people have always loved money and have been asking and wondering about how to make money and, more importantly, how to keep it from vanishing. Managing money is often made out to be a nightmare. There are always things to buy and hardly ever enough

CUTTING COSTS A QUICK GUIDE

• Opt for non-branded items over luxury brands. Utility trumps fashion. • If you can make something yourself instead of buying it, make it. DIY is both fun and easy on the pocket. • Buy clothes at sales or online. You might spend less online as there are no items physically present around you to distract you from your list. • Buy cinema and other entertainment tickets when offers are available. Buy 1 get 1 free offers are commonplace nowadays. • Use mass transit transport whenever possible. Buses are cheaper than autos and taxis. Alternatively, walk or cycle if the distance is short. • Before buying anything, ask yourself firmly, “Do I really need this?”

INVEST

Investment is a small word with big implications. While it is only about saving and putting away money some place safe, it is an act that can save your life. Investment is not just about making and saving money, it is about creating wealth, which is more than

just currency notes. Experts say you should start investing as soon as you receive your first paycheque. You could start earlier, while in college itself, but the money you invest then is more likely to be your parents’. Investing your own money might give you greater satisfaction.

INVESTING A QUICK GUIDE

• Investment should be a serious discipline from day one. Start investing with your first paycheque. • The old approach to saving was Income – Expenditure = Saving. The current approach is Income – Investment = Expenditure amount, so the first thing you must do after you get your salary is invest, then budget your expenses. • Credit cards are a must-have in this day and age but use them wisely. They attract the heaviest interest rates, so don’t use them for impulsive buying. When paying bills, pay credit card bills first. • Loans also require disciplined repayment. If you want to buy a

car or a home, buy it on a loan, even if you have enough cash in your bank account. The value of property will always increase, so you will end up paying much less at the end of, say, five years than what it becomes worth then.

MANAGE YOUR MONEY

• Always pay your bills on time: credit card, loan, mobile phone etc. Maintain a diary or calendar of payment due dates. • Deposit money every month in your bank account, say 20% of your pocket money or salary. • Save, then splurge. Also, spend less than you earn. yi

TOP 5 PLACES TO INVEST IN

MYTH BUSTER

Recession has nothing to do with investing. In fact, buying shares might be profitable as stock prices are down during a recession and the market does well after the recession.

• THE BANK: Open a free bank account and keep your cash in there. In an emergency, you might need easily accessible cash. • INSURANCE: Preferably life insurance because times today are uncertain. Life insurance assures your family security. • PROPERTY: It’s hard to buy a flat or a house at the start of your career, but start saving up. At least you will have some money put aside. • MUTUAL FUNDS: A low-risk investment. Start with a small amount. • SHARES: More risky than mutual funds. Returns are not guaranteed. Invest in a company that has a good reputation and proven track record of steady profits.

When Anil’s bullet almost killed John T his is one incident that neither John Abraham nor Anil Kapoor would forget. While the film’s makers were busy shooting the climax, the gun-effects team messed up on the methodology. The scene required Anil Kapoor (who plays cop Isaque Bagwan) to shoot a blank bullet. Anil shot the same and it burst into flames as planned, but due to the close range, hit John Abraham (who plays gangster Manya Surve). It was Anil Kapoor’s bad aim that did the trick for John, as he did not hit his neck because the bullet simply went past his neck. When John fell, a doctor was immediately called on the sets to attend to John. Anil Kapoor, who confirmed the incident, said that John was very fortunate. John said that it would have been all over for him on that day. He added that he still couldn’t believe that he was alive and that his neck was burnt, with the wound being there on his collar bone.

Have you ever bought a lottery ticket and hoped to win? Well, you probably didn’t win because God was busy answering the prayer of a man from Pennsylvania, who won a $17 million dollar lottery! He must be a really lucky man, right? Wrong. First he suffered a loss of $54,000 after he was robbed by thieves. Then, he was sued by his ex-girlfriend, dwindling down his earnings further. To add to his misery, his granddaughter spent her share of the winnings on drugs and eventually lost her life to drug abuse. Tragically, after some time, his daughter also met with the same fate. Disheartened by these events, Whittaker allegedly told reporters, “I wish I’d torn that ticket up.” 64 Youth Incorporated ║ NOVEMBER 2012

Shaken by the bombing, which caused him to lose hearing in his left year, Yamaguchi decided it was time to move to a safer city. And what could be a better option than Nagasaki to escape the hazardous effects of the bomb? Those of you who paid attention in history class will know that Nagasaki was the next city to be attacked by the Americans. While Yamaguchi is unlucky to have been in the only two cities attacked by atomic bombs, he managed to survive both these tragedies and live till the ripe age of 93.

Now, ladies, if you’re always complaining about how hairy Indian men are, here’s a reality check. Identifying his rotten luck, Lincoln decided to never attend presidential functions again. We’re sure he didn’t get invited to them either.

This British couple has probably never sent holiday postcards to their friends saying ‘Wish you were here’. Here’s why: the couple was holidaying in New York during the 9/11 attacks, then in London during the 2005 bombings and were unfortunately visiting Mumbai during the 2008 attacks. The couple managed to escape these cities unharmed, but we do wish they decide to contribute towards world peace by not planning a holiday any time soon.

This British officer was forced to retire from the Army after an accident left him partially paralysed. The incident was not caused by enemy fire, unless Summerfield was fighting battles with the Norse God Thor, because he was actually struck by lightning. What are the chances, right? His bad luck streak continued as he was struck by lightning again: once while fishing, once during a walk and one after his death. Yes, even his tombstone was struck by lightning. Seems unbelievable? Henry’s heart-broken ex-girlfriend committed suicide after he broke up with her. In a fit of rage, the girl’s brother went to Henry’s house and shot him, taking his own life after that. Luckily, the bullet missed Henry and lodged itself into a tree. Why is he unlucky, you ask? Because a few years later, Henry decided to blow up that tree, causing the bullet to propel towards him and take his life.

According to legend, a German zookeeper was frustrated by a constipated elephant and decided to feed him laxatives to ‘relieve’ him. Friedrich’s remedies certainly worked because the elephant released around 200 pounds of faeces in one go. But as luck would have it, poor Friedrich found himself in the line of fire and suffocated under the elephant poop.

Anderson was convicted of murder but managed to convince the jury that he was innocent. While the jury was convinced, karma sure wasn’t. Later, Anderson was trying to fix his earphones which were connected to his television set. Unluckily for him he decided to do this while seated on a steel toilet seat, resulting in his electrocution. Looks like some things are just meant to be. NOVEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 65

THE TONIC IN ACCESSORIES Sohel Lalvani and Sonali Lalvani, co-founders of ‘toniQ accessories’, who sponsored Miss India 2011, speak about how accessories are magic elixirs

Why did you choose the name 'toniQ' for your accessory brand? When we conceptualised an accessories brand for India, we knew the name had to be young, fresh and memorable. ‘toniQ’ was chosen as good accessories are a magic elixir to a dull wardrobe. It picks it up, refreshes it and makes you feel good. What makes 'toniQ' different and appealing from the gazillion accessory brands in the market? We do approximately 400 new designs every season. New styles are introduced every three weeks so there is always something new in stores. Our prices are unbeatable. What does your Limited Edition Collection consist of? High impact, bold, on-trend and attention-grabbing pieces. If you are looking at a conversation starter then Limited Edition is the pick. You have recently launched a collection for kids, tweens. What would induce them to flaunt 'toniQ'?

RAPID FASHION FIRE:

• Your inspiration:

India. We are absolutely loving the seismic change in fashion that is happening currently

• Favourite accessory designer:

Alexander McQueen and Mawi for her bold take on tribal designs

• Sizzling accessories for collegians:

Bright, layered necklaces and bangle stacks

‘toniQ girls’ is for the mini-hipster, young girl who loves to dress up. The collection is well-priced, so a girl on some pocket money can easily get herself one or two things from the collection. The styles change every three weeks and the colours and styles are seriously fun.

• An accessory-pairing faux pas: Mixing metals

• Life without accessories is like:

A cupckake without the icing and sprinkles - boring!

Which Bollywood stars would you like to accessorise? ‘toniQ’ is a brand for real people. It’s approachable, relevant and for our customers, so if we spot customers wearing toniQ at a movie or at a nightclub, it’s thrilling. Who is the ' highly, chicly accesorised' person in Hollywood right now? Rihanna – we love her constant reinvention and it is giving us a ton of inspiration. Our new winter 2012 collection has a lot of references to recent Rihanna videos. What is your next collection going to be? It is our Spring Summer 2013 Collection and our colour palatte is really airy, fresh and girly. What is your advice for youngsters dreaming to start their accessory brand (and give you competition!)? Stay relevant. Research, research, research.

Dark circles are caused by working on the computer for long hours, stress, inadequate moisturising and water intake and vitamin B12 deficiency. To get rid of them, have regular nutritious meals and correct any vitamin deficiency. Also, drink lots of water throughout the day and use a good moisturiser to keep your skin wellhydrated. Remember to also take intermittent breaks from the computer; do eye exercises such as rubbing your palms against each other till they become warm and then covering your eyes with your warm palms for about a minute. A dermatologist can also suggest creams containing hyaluronic acid, caffeine, vitamin K, retinoic acid, kojic acid, vitamin C arbutin, alpha

hydroxyl acids, tetrahydrocurcumin, hydroquinone or botanical extracts. Also there are medicated dark circleconcealer sticks containing vitamin K to conceal them aesthetically. Treatments like mesotherapy or gentle peels can help to hasten the process of lightening if you are looking forward to an important occasion shortly. Eye bags can make a person look tired and give a melancholy look which is socially embarrassing. Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes can make a person look older than they are. They are caused by repeated repeated sun exposure and smoking. Some measures to keep them at bay are splashing ice cold water on your face and reducing salt intake in your food. An eye cream containing dextran sulphate, peptides, certain botanicals or caffeine can aslo help. But remember to never rub and instead pat creams gently on the skin around your eyes. If you wish to treat wrinkles, use eye creams Dear D, Last week, my mother posted my baby pictures on Facebook(I was naked in all of them!). When I came to work the next day, I found that my co-workers AND my boss had printed and pinned up these pictures all over the office. Please save me from further humiliation! -Facebook Victim Dear Facebook Victim, All of us have embarrassing baby pictures. Except for Justin Beiber. And me. Since I haven’t seen your pictures, I’ll assume they’re hideous. The most effective solution is to deny those are your pictures. Here’s how: first, tattoo a fake birthmark on your backside. Second, gather your family and co-workers around and compare the baby’s backside to your backside. Third, wait for your mother to do the explaining. Always ready to help, D

that contain active ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids, peptides, vitamin C or retinoic acid after consulting a dermatologist. Certain specific lasers and technologies like fractional radiofrequency with microneedling are used to tighten loose skin around the eye as well. Hollow eyes are caused by the sunken or depressed skin around the eye socket giving a ‘skeletal’ or tired look. Being underweight can contribute to the increased hollowness of the eyes. By gaining weight, you may be able to fill in the hollowness around your eyes and make them look more natural. Fat injections and fat grafts performed by experienced doctors can reduce the appearance of dark, sunken eyes. Eyelashes can be enhanced with the help of medications containing peptides. Recently, a drug called Bimatoprost has been approved by US FDA to enhane eyelashes. However, it must be used consistently to maintain the effect and can cause discoloration of the iris.

Dear D, My birthday is coming up and my boyfriend is clueless about shopping. To save him from this turmoil, I hinted that I wanted a Prada handbag. To my surprise, he laughed and said he can’t afford it. I don’t want to seem like a gold digger, but the least he can do is earn some extra bucks. After all, I bought him a really expensive wallet last month. -Prada Princess Dear Prada Princess, Sweetie, I want a Ferrari driven by lingerie models, but if we all got what we wanted, Rakhi Sawant would be giving her Oscar acceptance speech. Get that wallet back, sell it on ebay and buy the handbag. Next month, sell the bag and buy him a gift. And the next month, sell the gift and… you get my drift. Love is measured by money (yours) spent together. Feel free to thank me in cash/kind, D

ORCHHA:

_TRAVEL

MEDIEVAL MAGIC

VISHAKA JAYAKUMAR

Laxminarayan Temple: An interesting synthesis of fort and temple architecture, its interiors are a riot of paintings and murals. The subjects are both spiritual and secular and are clearly visible even today thanks to remarkable preservation.

 GETTING THERE The nearest town is Jhansi in Uttar LAKSHMI NARAYAN TEMPLE

Orchha is a medieval architectural marvel that puts modern towns to shame. Youth Inc explores a chunk of India’s forgotten history through this erstwhile royal capital.

L

ocated in the heart of India, in the aptly named state of Madhya Pradesh (‘central province’), Orchha is a forgotten Rajput capital. Fed by the Betwa river, it was founded by Rudra Pratap, a Rajput chieftan, in the early 16th century as the capital of Orchha state. The region subsequently became known as Bundelkhand after the ruling Bundela dynasty, the specific Rajput clan Rudra Pratap belonged to. A keen builder, Rudra Pratap built the first structure of the capital – Orchha

Pradesh, about 15 km away. Â From Gwalior, Delhi or Agra take a train to Jhansi station. Â From Jhansi station, take either an auto rickshaw (40 minute journey) or a taxi (20 minute journey). There are share auto rickshaws outside the station, which can seat 8 to 11 people and charge a nominal fee.

Fort. His successors, especially Vir Singh Deo, inherited his love for architecture and kept alive a persistent programme of building. The result today is a ghost town peppered with breathtaking structures that lend Orchha its picture postcard quality. Orchha does not figure in the conventional tourist map. Few know of its existence. The edifices of Orchha are a perfect getaway for the invested explorer who relishes glimpsing history by way of keen and quiet observation. yi JAHANGIR MAHAL

YASHI WONG

Ram Raja Mandir: As the name suggests, this is a temple dedicated to Rama. The legend connected to this temple is that idols meant to be installed in the nearby Chaturbhuj Temple were kept on the ground, but got stuck there as they refused to move. A makeshift temple was then built around them which became the Ram Raja Mandir. Its courtyard is exquisite and colourful.

{

The historical precinct of Orchha is no bigger than a small village today, so you can go everywhere on foot.

Chaturbhuj Temple: Dedicated to the fourarmed (‘chaturbhuj’) Vishnu, this temple is the dominating structure of Orchha town. Though rich in exterior ornamentation, the sanctum sanctorum is plain and high. Look out for the hidden stairs that lead to the roof for a spectacular view of the entire area.

 WHAT TO SEE

NAGARJUN KADUKURU

J.M. SUAREZ

CENOTAPHS BY THE BETWA RIVER

RAMAYANA PAINTING IN THE RAJ MAHAL

The Fort Complex: the enclosure includes the best known structures of Orchha – the Raj Mahal, a palace with colourful murals; and the Jahangir Mahal, an imposing, tiered palace with lots of delicate trellis work built to commemorate the visit of Mughal ruler Jahangir. Also in the enclosure is Rai Praveen Mahal, a two storey brick structure set in the gardens of another palace called Anand Mahal.

Phool Bagh: This is a garden with a central row of fountains that ends in an eight-pillared pavilion-like palace. An underground structure here was intended to be the cool retreat for the Orchha kings during the summer. The water ventilation system connects the underground palace with Chandan Katora, a bowl-like structure from whose fountains droplets of water filtered through to the roof, simulating rainfall.  Sundar Mahal: One of the Orchha princes married a Muslim girl and converted to Islam. He spent the latter part of his life in prayer and meditation, presumably in this palace, and is now recognised as a saint. And although today it is in ruins, this palace is a pilgrimage place for Muslims.  Chhatris (cenotaphs): 14 memorials to the Orchha kings are grouped along the Kanchan Ghat of the Betwa at the south end of town. They can be climbed for great views of the river.

 TRAVEL TIPS Â The best time to visit Orchha is during the monsoons (July to September) when the Betwa is swollen. Get your feet wet in the river. Avoid summers. Â If the Betwa river overflows, avoid crossing the bridge that lies over it. It leads to a forest, which is worth a visit at other times. Â If you fancy some shopping, there is a small market in front of the Ram Raja Mandir. You’ll find handicrafts, souvenirs, gemstones, beaded chains and necklaces and other similar ornamental items. Remember to haggle for a good price! Â There are a couple of street restaurants for cheap food and drink. There is only one liquor store in town and it is in the market, but don’t expect international brands. Sheesh Mahal and Amar Mahal, the more upscale hotels here, have better food and drink but are more expensive. NOVEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 73

Badass sports from India KABBADI

A relentless chant of ‘kabbadikabbadi-kabbadi’ under the breath and finishing in tattered clothes are hallmarks of this sport. What it is: Derived from the Tamil words kai (hand) and pidi (hold/ catch), Kabbadi is a two-team sport with each team occupying one side of a field. They take turns sending a ‘raider’ to the other side. Points are won by tackling members of the opposing team. The raider must then return to his team, but he must hold his breath and chant the word kabaddi during the entire raiding process. If he fails to do any of these, or is tackled by the opposite team, he is declared ‘out’. Badass element: Tackling or attempting to get out of a tackle involves some hardcore wrestling. And remember – no losing your breath with the chant even when you are 74 Youth Incorporated ║ NOVEMBER 2012

et’s forget for ten minutes everything that’s shown on ESPN and shift our gaze to the games played in the bylanes of India. How about the sports we loved playing as children? Or even hated because our schools forced them on us? Tentative chalk lines on tar roads, pebbles and rocks stacked over each other, makeshift balls made from cloth and rubber – we did not know then, but we were playing some badass Indian sports that were building our muscles and character. Let us revisit those games, as well as look some others, that help make up India’s sporting tradition.

_SPORTS

ADARSH UPADHYAY

MALLAKHAMB

Move over, Olympics gymnastics. This will leave you in knots and perhaps even with broken bones. What it is: Literally meaning pole gymnastics, Mallakhamb is a feat of gymnastics along and on a vertical wooden pole or a rope. Originally an exercise regime for wrestlers, it is today a sport in its own right. Badass element: To make things clear, Mallakhamb is NOT pole dancing. It is not dancing of any sort. To be able to contort the body into the most ridiculous poses against gravity on a support that actually offers little or no support is a near miracle. International appeal: Still confined to India, but well known in the country.

JALLIKATTU

(gilli) off a see-saw position and whack it again when mid-air with a bigger stick (danda). Then run off to a certain point, praying the fielder doesn’t catch the gilli before you’re done.

LAGORI / Involves two teams and a pile of stacked stones. One team breaks the pile with a ball and then tries to reassemble it, and the second team throws balls at the first to interrupt it. A player hit is out. KHO KHO / A game of chase where a

row of nine ‘catchers’, seated in a horizontal line facing opposite sides, must catch the ‘runners’ from the opposing team. Only one catcher is active at a time and passes on the duty to another with a pat on the back and the word ‘kho’.

THANG-TA S.R. SASIKUMAR

Boat racing on boats with no sides. Also, guaranteed to give you Arnold Schwarzenegger arms. What it is: Popular in Kerala during Onam, this snake boat race (because one end of the boat is curved like a snake hood) sees nearly 30 villages competing annually, each represented by a boat. The oarsmen sing traditional songs as they row a distance of 40 km. The first boat to cross the finish line receives a trophy that was instituted by Jawaharlal Nehru. Badass element: (A) Singing to the rhythm of the rowing (B) Doing that for 40 km (C) Sitting on a boat that you can fall off at any time because there are no side barriers. Need I say more? International appeal: Vallam Kali draws huge crowds of tourists, both domestic and international. And although rowing is a sport world over, who else does it on snake shaped boats?

GILLI DANDA / Whack a small stick

BALL BADMINTON / In this variation of badminton, the shuttlecock is replaced with a woollen ball and is a team sport with not two but five players per side!

Run away from a bull? No. Wrestle or ride the bull? Both. What it is: In Spain, they let loose a herd of bulls and the participants run away from their pernicious horns. Later, the bulls are killed. Jallikattu involves no killing (of the bulls, at least) and the participants do not run away. Instead, they chase the bulls and attempt to grab one by its hump or horns and hold on for dear life for a distance. Those who succeed win a prize. Badass element: These bulls are aggressive and do not like being caught hold of. They are known to hook participants to their horns and throw them off course. Ouch. International appeal: Spain does play with its bulls, but Jallikattu is unique to Tamil Nadu where it is played during the harvest festival of Pongal.

Sword fighting meets Ninja acrobatics. What it is: Thang (‘sword’) ta (‘spear’) is a weapon-based martial art indigenous to the Meiti people of Manipur. As the name suggest, spears and swords are chiefly used, but axes and shields also feature. The fighters don’t just swing around the weapon, they also dance around with them ferociously as they fight, employing gymnastic and Ninja-like stunts. Badass element: Keeping your eyes on a weapon is bad enough, but to watch out for your opponent’s swift strokes and ever-changing position is just insane. International appeal: Sadly, Thang-ta is virtually unknown outside Manipur. yi NOVEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 75

Sheer thrilling action all the way for FIFA enthusiasts, delivering on every promise made! The old favourites are spiced with new options: you get to overcome challenges put forth by team managers, use various seasonal backdrops, avail of choices, alternatives, as well as superlative team options, even before you’ve begun! Included are the possibility of purchasing sports gear, footwear, advanced player options, etc. Challenge your friends to a face-off with their best teams and your dream team at play – even online. The same applies to the field. The game is elaborate, yet clever, taking Messi’s 2012 heroics further in the 2013 game edition. Reflexive moves and game sequence are facilitated by innovative ‘fixes’ to old maneuvers, producing remarkable effects. Gone is the controlled play and is improved by better animation. This is unadulterated FIFA exhilaration; every move is absorbing, whether repositioning, chasing, or dribbling. There are four challenge levels: bronze, silver, gold and skill, which get tricky increasingly, testing your dexterity. Minutiae of life-like figures, brilliant detailing of pitches and synchronized animation plug you to the game. The sport comes alive with the commentary, which adds to the whole display of an excitement-charged arena.

PAN’S LABYRINTH

MUSE – THE 2ND LAW

WATCH

Pan’s Labyrinth is about Ofelia, a girl who believes she is the reincarnate of the princess of an unworldly kingdom. When Ofelia is at her cruel stepfather, Captain Vidal’s house, in the Spanish countryside, she is visited by a mysterious faun creature who gives her three tasks to accomplish to prove her royal heritage. In the course of her trials, she meets several bizarre and magical creatures, some downright terrifying, leading her to a final confrontation in the old labyrinth garden in her stepfather’s estate. Beautiful, mesmerising and tragic.

THE CARPET PEOPLE

READ

The debut novel of Terry Pratchett, who has since become a leading figure in fantasy literature, The Carpet People documents the journey of a tribe called Munrungs across a world called Carpet. Carpet has no trees but loads of hair, dust and vegetation. When the Munrungs reach their village, they find it destroyed by a mysterious force called Fray (presumably vacuum cleaning or sweeping by humans). The novel ends with a battle against the Mouls, a tribe of Fray worshippers. Every page is a hilarious and clever parody of the real world.

CARIBBEAN BLUE

Movies / Music / Books

Fans of Muse must know by now that the band has a different sound in every album. So in The 2nd Law, which is inspired by the second law of thermodynamics, while there is plenty of lead singer Matthew Bellamy’s vibrato voice, there is also plenty of electronica, dance and – hold your breath – dubstep in mishmash with progressive rock. The usual influences of Queen, Radiohead and David Bowie abound, right from the energetic opening track Supremacy, to the melodic Animals halfway down and to the music mini-operatic finales The 2nd Law: Unsustainable and The 2nd Law: Isolated System. Survival, which was the official song of the 2012 Olympics, does not seem to belong to the album. As per Muse’s standards, The 2nd Law is experimental, current and absurd enough, but it will take a while to grow on the fan.

THE XX – COEXIST

The wait for fresh music from the popular indie-pop band The XX is finally over. Almost three years after the release of their critically acclaimed debut album, the band has returned with their latest album Coexist. The band managed to accumulate a wide fan base with their unique, almost unclassifiable music. Howver, the biggest challenge this album faces is meeting the expectations of their hungry fans looking for satiation of a three-year-long starvation. Also, unlike their debut album, Coexist does not offer enough surprises. But after the first listening session, when unrealistic expectations are tamed, one realises there is enough to savour. The album has a calming effect while exploring turbulent themes of heartbreak and lonliness. Swept Away and Reconsider are songs that possesses the band’s signature elements: haunting vocals and a mesmerising harmony, much like Crystalised from the band’s previous album. Sunset is another song where vocalists Romy MadleyCroft and Oliver Sim shine with their vulnerable yet distinct voices. We only hope for more frequent musical offerings from the band.

SKYFALL LISTEN

Enya is the queen of whimsical music (both by theme and musical quality) and Caribbean Blue is one of her most fantastic imaginings. Carrying her trademark lush, layered and mellifluous vocals, the song asks a number of ‘what if’ questions about the world and dreams. The instrumentation is ethereal and the video transports you to a magical realm. Guaranteed to set fire to your senses. 82 Youth Incorporated ║ NOVEMBER 2012

QUICK FIRE INTERVIEW WITH ANAND NEELAKANTAN Asura – Tale of the Vanquished: The Story of Ravana and His People is the Ramayana told through Ravana’s perspective. No one in this tale, not even Ravana himself, is either god or devil. Instead, every character is human, only differentiated from the other by their caste and love of power. Thus, terms such as Deva and Asura, which are otherwise associated with divinity and evil, are only warring castes. What Neelakantan achieves is a deconstruction of the epic to a more relatable and plausible chain of events, reminding us that legends of gods and such are only machinations of age-old politicos and the powers that be. This ‘Ravanayana’ is a fascinating reinterpretation of the Ramayana. One only wishes it were written with more finesse to hold the reader’s attention better.

books

1. Why Ravana and why the Ramayana? Ravana as a protagonist offers immense possibilities. Apart from Duryodhana, who is far less complicated, few characters in Indian mythology offer so much challenge. He is a ruler about whom Rama talks in glowing terms. A consummate Veena player, an astrologer, scientist, authority on medicine, musician, artist, warrior, great administrator – I do not think any villain has been portrayed with so many qualities in any story. 2. How much and how long did you have to research before writing the book? Asura is a work of passion which has taken my entire life to write. I have been exposed to mythology right from my childhood and Ravana’s story has always fascinated me. As I grew up, I got exposed to various traditions and folk tales of Ravana. It took six years to bring the novel to the current form, with lots of breaks for travel and research in between. 3. Did you come across any surprising revelations during your research? One of the most surprising revelations was hearing about Moppilah Ramayana or Muslim Ramayana of the Malabar where Rama is Lama and is a Sultan instead of the prince of Ayodhya. In another version of the Ramayana, Sita is a tribal princess for whose hand both Rama and Ravana fight. One of the Kannada versions says Ravana is the mother of Sita, yes, the mother, and another one portrays Rama and Ravana as brothers. The sheer variety is mind-boggling. 4. Do you intend to continue rewriting epics and myths in the antagonist’s point of view? What is your next project? I am writing Mahabharata from the point of view of Duryodhana and his people. But I have no intention of selecting all the villains in the history and mythology and making heroes out of them. Ravana and Duryodhana offer

_RESTAURANT REVIEW

Resto/Meter

THE BEST NEW FOOD SPOTS IN T OW N ////////

TOSCANO, BANGALORE CUISINE: Toscano is an Italian restaurant, so the menu is an offering of pizzas, pastas, salads, seafood, and meat and poultry preparations. The dessert menu is continental. AMBIENCE: Mild, classy and respectable. An open, sunshine-y feel. FOOD AND DRINKS: The free bread basket whets your appetite with some aromatic and delicious Italian breads. The soups are light. The meat dishes are cooked well. The braised pastas tend to be dry if you are looking for a ‘saucy’ experience. The pizzas are fresh and you can see them being prepared in the restaurant from scratch. The desserts are the real draw – great variety and absolutely lip-smacking. Toscano is famous for its wines (32 in the menu!), so if you like wine, this is like winning the lottery. SERVICE: Quick, friendly and efficient. No long waiting times. PRICE: Some items are unnecessarily expensive (like the mocktails and salads), but by and large Toscano is moderately priced. OVERALL IMPRESSION: Worth a visit, especially if you’re in a group. Unfortunately, the location is a deterrent. This particular Toscano branch is in a mall and not a good one at that. There are other better malls in the vicinity which dull the sheen of the place. 2nd Floor, Forum Value Mall, Whitefield, Bangalore -Daksha Prithviraj

CUISINE: It surely is a ‘fatty’ cuisine embedded with several types – America, Italian, Indonesian, Burmese, Southeast Asian and Thai. AMBIENCE: From the outside, the place is almost invisible. However, the interiors are altogether different. It has a cozy, romantic feel to it. Classy and comfy. FOOD AND DRINKS: The bar bites are crispy and worth the price. The fish fingers and chicken wings definitely qualify in the fingerlicking category. The average beer pint shells `160 from your wallet. The cheese fondue and @ fat cat yard ales would make you drool. SERVICE: Quick and friendly service. Your tummy need not wait for a lot of time for the yummies. PRICE: Apart from a few dishes being overpriced, overall it is moderate and totally worth the cost. OVERALL IMPRESSION: The road to get there is a little dark, but once you get in, all is well. It’s divine, keeping in mind the price, quality, taste and service factor. Bharat ARC, Veera Desai Road, Andheri West, Mumbai -Sunaina Lakhani

OVER THE WEEKEND HANGOUTS

CLUB CZAR, NEW DELHI

VIBE: The atmosphere at this lounge-cum-bar-cum-restaurant is laidback and draws people in their early 20s. The space is large with a gothic vibe and cosy lounge seating. The automated bar lets waiters tap out drink orders on touch screens. The large projection screens are a good viewing experience, though they absorb the waiters more. MUSIC: The DJ’s beats slowly changed from electronica and house to mainstream Akon and Rihanna mixes which appealed to the young crowd, bringing it to its feet. BITES 'N' BOOZE: They offer Indian, Lebanese and continental cuisine. The exotic dishes like African-influenced chicken harissa skewers and lamb noissette with rosemary are disappointing. With the Delhi favourites – murgh malai tikka, falafel, garlic bread and chocolate cake with vanilla ice-cream – the food hits the spot. Similarly with the drinks, keep it simple – chilled beer or whiskey. The wine list is restricted to two kinds of Sula, and amongst the cocktails, the Cosmopolitan was a syrupy disaster. BUCKS TO SHELL: At `2000 for a meal for two, it is hard to be forgiving, yet the space has potential to become a regular hangout. FAB OR DRAB: Chuck the fussy cocktails and half-hearted exotic cuisine, bring on the Johnny Walker, the time-tested bites, the top 20 hits and get the party started. BEST NIGHT: Wednesday Arabian Nights; Middle Eastern menu and drinks. Salcon Ras Villas Mall, District Centre, Saket, New Delhi.

HIDDEN PLACE – THE HANG OUT, PUNE VIBE: Colourful, youthful, loud and lively. Great for a gang of buddies. MUSIC: Varied selections from rock to electric. The DJ picks numbers that make one groove while eating. BITES 'N' BOOZE: Continental, Indian, fast food and sea food are available. Every delicacy in the FNB section is worth the bucks. Recommended dishes and drinks are the tandoori boti kabab (`245), corn fritters topped with salsa (`135), any premiun whiskey and a Kingfisher draught boy mug (`101). The time taken to bring the food depends on the dish ordered as everything is prepared from scratch. Exotic dishes take longer. There are long waiting times outside as well, so arrive early. BUCKS TO SHELL: Moderate and affordable. The prices are incredible for several delicacies when compared to the high prices elsewhere. A paisa vasool for collegians, especially because there is no entry charge. FAB OR DRAB: A total rocker, yummie and is affordably priced. BEST NIGHT: Tulli Tuesdays; happy hours all day. 2 & 3 Upper Ground Floor, Gera Legend, North-Main Road, Koregaon Park, Pune. -Anand Joshi
