Editor's
note
The internet is just a world passing around notes in a classroom - Jon Stewart When the World Wide Web and consequently the internet were created in the early 1990s, its basic purpose was to share information transcending geography and location. Today, it can be duly said that this purpose has been fulfilled beyond measure. From its debut to this day, the internet has grown in ways incomprehensible. 23 years since its emergence, the internet has come to be much more than just a medium for information sharing. It’s become a source of news and information dissemination, a point of connection between people from one end of the globe to the other, an avenue of everything entertaining, a place where one can get educated, connect with friends, order groceries and so much more. It is therefore safe to say, the world is your oyster. To commemorate the spirit of this magnanimous entity, we present, The Internet Age. In this issue we also touch upon a very pertinent topic – depression. The number of lives lost due to depression each year appals and scares me. In spite of the lives that this dreadful disease takes year after year, it receives very little importance. Through our story on depression, we aim to tackle this grave situation that plagues the young and the old in equal parts. Over the last few years my team and I have noticed a number of students choose Canada as their study destination. Is this just a trend or is there an underlying reason as to why students are opting for this country over other front runners like the UK and US? The Canadian Advantage digs deeper into Canada as one of the world’s upcoming study locations aiming to figure what makes this country a strong choice amongst students. Digressing from education, world destinations for the party lover is a topic that is very close to my heart. I firmly believe in the principle ‘work hard, party harder’, keeping that in mind this list of selectively curated party locations spread across the globe is ideal for those who share this ideology with me. Whether it’s Las Vegas, Germany, London or New York, these party hubs should not be missed. Wishing all our readers a Happy Diwali!

Most
students pursuing professional degrees do so with the intention of a career in the given field. However, today, it is not uncommon to see students pursuing a career in the circumference of their professional field, though not directly related to their field of study. One such example is seen in the trend of young law college graduates. Several law students today look at careers other than that of a lawyer – in politics, accounting, teaching and finance.
WHAT CAN I DO WITH A LAW DEGREE?
Once a law degree has been bestowed, there are quite a few options that can be considered. Many opt to take up internships or clerkships in the pursuit
of preparing for a full-fledged career in law. Working under senior lawyers or in a private firm as an intern will offer the opportunity to see how a practice works, what the working hours are like and what the work itself is like. Along with this, it also offers a glimpse into that lifestyle. The advantage of this option is room for growth and learning without too much stress. While some choose hands-on experience, others prefer to take on higher education in law like master’s or doctorate degrees. Another option is to start working directly once out of a professional law college. This is includes (but is not limited to) working for yourself, for the government, for a private company, for a business, or even in academia – teaching law.
WHY OPT FOR A NONTRADITIONAL LAW ROUTE?
There are many reasons as to why someone would choose to venture into a non-traditional career path after having worked so hard to obtain a law degree. Some people like the idea of doing something different, whereas others prefer the lifestyle that accompanies the jobs on this alternative road. Several others reroute because of the sheer fact that an overwhelming number of law students graduate each year, and it is not in their interest to compete for similar jobs. Ultimately, choosing to do something different with a law degree, though challenging, is definitely exciting. Truth be told, there are plenty of options available for those with a law degree.
WHAT OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE?
Law graduates can work in a variety of fields: Business and legal careers These are the career options that most law students will be familiar with. To be considered for these jobs, an applicant must have studied at least some law. The jobs could include anything from working as a paralegal to a project manager or a management consultant. The jobs in this field tend to be the ones which would’ve crossed your mind as you set yourself on the course to studying law. Public sector and political careers Law is the basic fundamental structure that builds the foundation of society. That said, it should be no surprise that lawyers are very much involved in all different areas of political and public sector careers. It should be noted that both Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, two great political-social activists, were lawyers first. With that in mind, some of the more important jobs which a law graduate can pursue in this field are various posts in the civil service, government research OCTOBER 2014 Youth Incorporated 21

FOCUS FEATURE
Banking, finance and accounting Many jobs in the world of finance and banking require a certain understanding of legal terms and concepts. This makes a career in this field ideal for law graduates who will be able to easily understand and grasp them. The following are all jobs which would be ideal for law graduates to pursue in this realm: chartered certified/management/public finance accountant, commodities broker, financial advisor/manager, insurance account manager, investment banker/ fund manager, pension scheme manager, tax advisor/inspector, etc. Teaching and academic careers This is a perfect fit for anyone seeking a career in education as well as law. The obvious choice is to teach law students in a professional college, but in addition to that there are many more options including working as a career advisor to law students looking for ideas about what to pursue in the future. Having a law degree is not only helpful when teaching law, but is also helpful as an add on when applying for teaching jobs at primary, secondary and college levels. Advertising, marketing and PR While jobs in this field do not require any specific degree, a person who has a law degree always has the option of looking into legal-related jobs within this group. Press officers in public relations, and sales and promotion jobs all require a good knowledge of the legal system. Jobs in marketing, media buying or planning require a less extensive knowledge of the legal world, making them perfect for law graduates who don’t want to rely too much on their degrees. Media Media is such a vast entity; there are many opportunities and uses for a 22 Youth Incorporated OCTOBER 2014

law degree in it. Working for legal publishers and industry publications demands that you have substantial knowledge of legal system workings, whereas other careers require great written and oral skills which you would’ve mastered during the course of your degree. Some exciting career opportunities in this field are broadcast journalist, editorial assistant, records manager, television production assistant and publishing rights manager. Since the media puts out so much material, all of which is required to be legally correct, there is always room for law graduates here.
APPROACH TO A NONTRADITIONAL CAREER PATH
S. Vishaka is a final year law student at Saveetha College’s School of Law in Chennai who plans to pursue a career in chartered management accounting. She says, “More and more students are opting to pursue different things with a law degree. It’s a big responsibility and even a hassle to be involved in a traditional practice setting. Doing something different and something new in a field not immediately associated with law, yet still connected to it gives us a sense of freedom that isn’t normally experienced in a traditional setting. Not to mention that the excitement that comes with tackling challenges in a different environment is refreshing.” The best approach to set yourself
CAREERS WITH A LAW DEGREE
Business Politics/public sector Banking/finance/ accounting Teaching and education Media NGOs/charity/nonprofit organisations Human resources Medicolegal on a career path out of the standard is to actively look out for the field that excites you, and then figure out what kind of opportunities are available for someone with your qualifications. “Start small, maybe with an internship over the course of the summer holidays. Test the waters and see if you can see yourself pursuing this for the rest of your life. If you can, then look into what jobs are available for a graduate and take things from there,” says Vishaka. “Don’t lose heart if the first thing you try doesn’t work out. Just keep an eye out for different opportunities which excite you!” Take the risk and dive in. Good luck! yi OCTOBER 2014 Youth Incorporated 22

OUT OF THE BOX CAREER
“Stay with the beer. Beer is continuous blood. A continuous lover.” – Charles Bukowski Your love for beer need not be restricted to bars. Take it to the next level and study the art of beer making. Aarushi Agrawal provides the down low on acceptable alcoholism – a career in beer
The
youth have a long standing history with beer. For some, it is an initiation into the world of alcohol. While for many others, it is the only drink that fuels their system. Beer is that one drink that can be enjoyed in any situation, with anyone and at any given time of day. So what makes this drink so very special? Its types and ingredients, of course! There are four basic ingredients in beer – water, malt, hops and yeast. And they are categorised into two broad types – ales and lagers.

CAREER WATCH
The Beauty
Doctor Everyone today wants to look better than the other. Monthly visits to the salon are therefore never enough as it takes a different kind of professional to primp and curl to perfection – a cosmetologist. Devika Soni takes a closer look at this business of looking good
A
fashion designer is to fashion what a cosmetologist is to hair and beauty. Deciders of trends, initiators of all things glamorous and professionals with a knack for transforming simple to fabulous, a cosmetologist today is of utmost importance. Cosmetology is an umbrella term that encompasses within its reach hairstyling, skin and beauty treatments, nail technicians and various other outlets. With people’s constant need to look glamorous, careers in cosmetology are the need of the hour.
What is cosmetology?
Cosmetology deals with the study and application of hair and beauty treatments and techniques that better the appearance of a person. Today, people are extremely conscious about the well-being of their skin and the health of their hair. Pollution and demanding professional and personal lives command intensive care of hair and body, which is where a cosmetologist steps in. Cosmetologists look after the skin and beauty professionally. They are broadly classified into two categories: medical (dermatologists) and non-medical professionals. Their jobs are essentially the same, but differ in the kind of treatment they use, their techniques and area of expertise. 26 Youth Incorporated OCTOBER 2014

25-09-2014 20:02:18
Specialisations
There are tons of specialisations in cosmetology. The most common and well known are: Hair styling: Hair has become just as important as the right outfit. It frames a person’s face and gives a sense of confidence. A specialisation in hair styling will require you to deal with hair cutting, shampooing, colouring, wig styling, perking, straightening, bonding, restorative treatment, etc. You will also be required to know about hair care for different types of hair while also ensuring good health and the right look of clients’ hair. Aesthetics: Aestheticians deal with skin treatment. They specialise in facials, massages, waxing, peeling, aromatherapy, spa treatments, makeup, etc. An aesthetician must also know about skin types and should be able to suggest skin care products that suit them the best. With the required qualifications you can even work in a hospital and help patients look after their skin post surgery. Nail technician: Clean hands, legs and nails are an important aspect of beauty and an even more important aspect of hygiene. Nail technicians beautify hands and feet. By specialising in this field you can work with nail painting, designing, henna, etc. Electrolysis: Electrologists help rid of the pain of hair removal permanently by using a treatment called electrolysis. The advanced and more popular version is hair removal by radiations or laser treatment.
Qualifications
Non-medical cosmetology does not require a specific degree or qualification. A desire and yearning to learn are all that are required. Once a person is certain about the area they’d like to know more about, getting a specialisation in that area would be ideal, for example in henna, skin care, tattoos, hair styling, makeup, etc. For dermatology or medical cosmetology there is a basic requirement of an MBBS and a postgraduate degree in
dermatology. To add on to a person’s knowledge, certificate, diploma and advanced diploma courses can be taken.
The money
The primary factor of your income would be the size and reputation of your business or employer. You can start with anything from `3000 to `10,000 a month. Makeup artists and hairstylists charge anywhere from `5, 000 to `7, 000 and above depending on skill, expertise and experience. A privately owned business often tends to increase the influx of money. However, it is advisable to gain significant experience before starting out on your own.
The scope of cosmetology
Cosmetology is the need of the hour. Beauty and skin care chains in India like Kaya Skin Clinic are constantly in need of cosmetologists to keep their heavy flow of clients happy and satisfied. There are several industries in India that directly depend on cosmetology – the film industry, television, advertising, fashion, wedding industry, etc. Cosmetologists are therefore indispensable to an extent.
Perks and challenges
Creative freedom, a fun yet challenging work environment and the opportunity to meet and interact with new people almost everyday are some perks. Freelance cosmetologists additionally have the liberty to choose the kind of work and money they wish to bring in with the assignments they pick. A job in cosmetology is nothing like a 9-5 job; often the working hours extend beyond 12-14 hours thus making it physically and mentally demanding. In terms of salary, it takes a person a significant number of years to become established in the industry and to be taken seriously. yi
CAREER FACTS
JOB PROFILE: A cosmetologist provides beauty, skin, hair treatments and overall health care. It is a broad area that encompasses hairstyling, makeup artistry, nail technics, aesthetics, massages and more.

HOW-TO GUIDE
The Ps and Qs of
socialising T
Tongue-tied on the first day of college or from speaking too much during work hours? Riddhi Jain tackles appropriate communication tactics for different situations with inputs exclusively from the Youth Inc staff
here is always a fear of talking to strangers in social and professional circles. But nothing is as difficult as it seems. Socialising with people around you is actually easy and effective if done the right way. Here is a quick guide on how to network in different situations.
SOCIALISING AT THE WORK PLACE
Yelling, screaming each other’s names, hanging around the office premises unnecessarily, nudging a shoulder and forcing personal questions at someone are uncalled for in offices. Indulge in such behaviour only with the intention of losing your job.
Encroachment of personal space is a serious issue when it comes to the workplace. One thing that sends chills up the spine of every new employee is balancing being professional and being yourself at the same time during office hours. “I am professional at work while being myself. Fitting into a mould isn’t what professionalism

is about. It’s about leveraging your unique identity,” says Caroline Samson, Chief Operating Officer at Youth Inc. Long story short – keep it straight, keep it professional.
SOCIALISING WITH COLLEAGUES
It is wise and advisable to catch up with your colleagues within lunch hours or coffee breaks and get conversing with them. This helps you develop a stronger official network (just LinkedIn or Facebook won’t help). Talk about past work experiences, hobbies, how they like their role in the company, their work profile, etc. Outside of work related topics, anything ranging from national politics to sports to new upcoming business entrepreneurs and gadgets are good topics. Family and relationship issues, too much of self talk and most importantly, gossiping about colleagues is a big no-no! “Today, with globalisation taking place at such a fast pace, it is important for professionals to communicate efficiently. Miscommunication can lead to losing of big clients and can also slowdown the overall progress of a company,” believes Nandini Barjatiya, Ad Sales Manager.
SOCIALISING IN COLLEGE
Making friends in college can be a cake walk or a really tough task. For most students, it is the latter. Many find it difficult to strike a conversation, let alone make friends. But that can be overcome. You can start by getting in touch with people you know from school or acquaintances in the same college campus who can show you around and help you get accustomed to the new environment. Attending freshers’ party and freshers’ week, as well as participating in various events in college will help you get to know the people around you in the campus. These are the situations where you actually make good friends. Try spending time with
every friend you make; hang out, complete projects together, go out for meals, etc. But be very careful to not invade someone’s privacy or go overboard in being around a person. Make sure everything you do is comfortable for both of you. “The art of small talk can be learnt with time. A major advice, SMILE!” suggests Persis Shroff, Youth Inc’s Marketing Manager. Keep your ego aside and try and
SOCIALISE LIKE A PRO BE CONFIDENT. Fumbling and stuttering when you speak is a sign of lack of confidence. Take a deep breath, think about what you wish to convey and take over the world! BE ENTERTAINING. A little bit of humour will take you a long way. Joke, but wisely! Try your best to make the person you are talking to smile and laugh as much as possible. STRIVE TO BUILD NEW RELATIONS. Don’t look at the person you are about to approach as a business deal. Instead, strive to achieve a deeper relationship. It is often the start of stronger relationships. BE NICE TO EVERYONE YOU MEET. Avoid being rude and curt however mean the person you are conversing with is to you. Don’t for get to smile and be cordial with everyone you meet. It automatically makes you more approachable and likeable. DRESS WELL. The way you present yourself directly depends on how seriously a person takes you. To make an impression dress well.
talk to as many people as you can. Remember: everyone here is just like you. Initiating a conversation is always taken in a good light. Don’t claim to be best friends with someone you’ve just met. It always works when conversations are simple and interesting.
SOCIALISING IN SOCIETY
How we communicate in our daily life speaks about our individuality. Society willingly accepts people who are optimistic, outgoing and joyful in nature. Get to know people having similar interests as you; you will then have a lot to talk about (thus avoiding awkward silences). But remember, it is not only your verbal communication that matters, but body language as well. Psychological studies report that 60-80% of communication is non-verbal. There are people in this world with a presence that naturally commands attention. It’s not about being the loudest or the flashiest, but rather how one is able to convey their worth without saying a word. “Before we communicate verbally, we are already judged on our presentation. It is the first thing that goes across the counter. Also, good command over language is essential,” says Heena Sopariwala, Youth Inc’s Ad Sales Manager. Society doesn’t accept those who choose to utter offensive comments either about individuals or any aspect of the society. That doesn’t mean you do not have the right to opine; the way you express it is important. If your language is offensive and can hurt someone’s sentiments, keep the opinions to yourself! Life is too short to have an entourage of moochers and pseudofriends. Therefore, make sure the company you keep is genuine and focused to do something in their lives. “You often become like the one you coffee and lunch with,” says Profesor Madhuvanti Date, who teaches effective communication skills in Mumbai colleges. We agree. yi OCTOBER 2014 Youth Incorporated 29

ith that ominous remark, the Israel Defence Forces launched Operation Protective Edge, an offensive against Hamas militants in the Gaza strip. It ended in wanton destruction and left more than 2,200 people dead, the vast majority of whom were Palestinians. The Middle East had gone bonkers, but the countless wars involving Israel
and Palestine have desensitised a considerable number of people to the ruination the countries have fallen into. Thus, it is apt to trace the causes of the present war.
Gaza
The Gaza Strip is an exclave region of Palestine, meaning a part of the territory of Palestine that is completely surrounded by Israel. In other words, Gaza is separated from the remaining territory of Palestine by Israel. Gaza is bordered by Israel, Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea. The Gaza-Israel conflict is part of the wider IsraelPalestine conflict.
Gaza is one of the most densely populated regions on the face of the Earth and has been under a crippling blockade since 2007. Egypt has sealed its borders with Gaza, while Israel has imposed a land, air and sea blockade on Gaza. This was done as a measure of retribution against the Palestinian people for democratically electing the political wing of the militant organisation Hamas. Debilitating the Gaza economy, the blockade, which has received widespread criticism from United Nations to Israel’s strongest ally, the United States, has left an unacceptable and unsustainable humanitarian situation in the Gaza region. Imagine never having travelled or having no access to any route out

against six civilian ships carrying humanitarian aid and construction material for the Gaza Strip. Gaza Flotilla Raid, as the operation is popularly referred to, was carried out in international waters in the Mediterranean Sea and left nine activists dead. A UN report described “the circumstances of the killing of at least six of the passengers were in a manner consistent with an extra-legal, arbitrary and summary execution.”
Armed VS Unarmed
What followed next was the disproportionate use of force by the IDF against people living in the Gaza Strip which left 1,500 civilians dead. The savagery of the use of force against unarmed civilians was a permanent blot on humanity. While no one begrudges Israel’s right to self-defence, the targeting of UN schools and shelters is a war crime. The brutalities of excessive force cannot be justified considering that families have lost generations in Israeli strikes. The lopsided battle was perfectly captured by comedian and satirist Jon Stewart when he narrated how the citizens of respective regions
t c i fl n Israel has been at the receiving end of several crude rockets fired by Hamas militants from Gaza, and has raged against this by indiscriminate firing of rockets into civilian regions. To combat this Israel has developed a mobile all weather defence system called the Iron Dome. It is designed to intercept and destroy 90% of the unsophisticated rockets fired from Gaza.
The fight
Hamas has also been building a network of underground tunnels into Israel and Egypt. While the tunnels along the Egyptian border are primarily used to supply civilian
Catalysts of the war
One of the events leading up to the break of war in July 2014 was the abduction of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank. While Israel alleged Hamas was behind these abductions, the Palestinian authority in the West Bank attributed it to the Qawasameh

t c i fl n o c l e a r s I a z a G e goods like food and medicine as well as commodities like fuel and concrete, they have also been utilised as a channel for smuggling weapons. During war they’ve also functioned as secure passages for Hamas militants. An Al-Jazeera report noted that at their peak the tunnels poured $700 million into the Gaza economy and provided employment to close to 7,000 people. The tunnels along the Israeli border however, have been used to launch frequent attacks on the Israeli Defense Forces(IDF). One 66-foot deep tunnel was constructed at a colossal cost of $10 million, making it Israel’s prime bone of contention. They contend that war is necessitated by cyclical need to undertake operation to destruct these underground tunnels. In fact this was proffered as an explanation for the blockade. However, it crumbled when Israel launched a military operation

clan which has a long history of sabotaging any attempts at peace with Israel. This led to a series of arrests and air strikes, which descended into a full-blown war.
Possibility of peace
Palestinians have pointed to the reconciliation between Hamas and the other main Palestinian faction Fatah, after seven years of division under the banner of a Unity government as the reason for Israel’s anger against Palestine. In comparison to Hamas, Fatah is seen as a moderate alternative to Hamas in Israeli and Western circles. A belligerent refusal to negotiate any peace with the new government, and rather seemed to push for harsh measures against the Unity government. The European Union, the United Nations, the United States, China, India, Russia and Turkey, though, recognised the Palestinian unity government.
were alerted to strikes. “While Israeli citizens can now download an app which warns them about strikes, Gaza residents are informed about imminent Israeli air strikes through light, smaller ones.”
Will there be reconciliation?
Like so many other disputes across the globe, this one began with a fight for land but politicians on both sides have now mutilated it into visceral hatred for the other. Both the Hamas leadership and the Israeli leadership derive a part of their power through constant war-mongering and hatepeddling. The solution, as several United Nations resolutions have espoused, is a two-state solution based on the five principles of peaceful coexistence. The challenge is whether both states can eject themselves from this orbit of despair to bring one of the longest running conflicts in the Middle East to an end. yi

“O
ffices were built so office politics would have a place to play out.” Though this was a wry statement made on the sitcom Will & Grace, there is truth to it. Politics is as much a part of a workplace as, well, work is. Of course, it needs to be said that politics is also something we’ll find in nearly every human interaction. The more opposing the individual personalities are, the more diabolical the politics get. And with a place of work being about employee performance and company profit, competitiveness and all its devilish accompaniments – such as half-truths, one-upmanship, sabotage and whatnots – may well come into play. So it’s a given that the office space is likely to be an unholy weed-infested cesspool of evil. But to have volatile relationships as the norm can’t possibly be healthy. Yet, the office is also the place we spend a good chunk of our days – and therefore, our lives. And man being a social animal, the primal urge to socialise, to unwind and get a breather, must be satiated to retain sanity. In such a scenario, should you turn to a colleague for friendship? Should you let your guard down with them? Are they safe to confide in? More importantly, can you recognise a frenemy from a friend? And is there such a thing as a true friend at a workplace? Or is there just evil lurking in the shadows? Here are some guidelines to help you through the minefield of workplace friendships.
Be picky like Goldilocks
Competition is the devil-maker, but if you’re vigilant in your choosing, you can have a healthy friendship with a colleague. Graphic designer Swati Barge says, “I’m picky about who I share things with. I’m close with a colleague from the accounts department, and keep cordial relations with the rest. It’s just safer. I think being friends with someone in a different department is easier
than one with someone in your own department. It’s also difficult to separate a work-related argument from the relationship as resentment tends to seep in,” she confides.
Steer the friend-‘ship’ clear
However, it’s not impossible to maintain a good relationship with a colleague, even from the same department as you. “It takes an effort on both your parts to separate your professional relationship from your personal friendship. You have to be able to keep them separate and leave work conflicts aside. Whatever the
Superheroes hide their identities for a reason – to ensure their professional life doesn’t encroach on their personal life issues are – whether you don’t see things eye to eye, or are vying to head the same project, or are competing for a promotion – both have to be able to keep aside all these issues. This is imperative for a healthy friendship,” reiterates counsellor Deepali Bhatt.
Only fools rush in
Like any other relationship, let a friendship grow organically. “Don’t rush into making a new colleague your best friend,” advises banker Ruchi Savla. “I once made the mistake of opening up about my boyfriend problems to a colleague I had known for a month. Next thing I knew, the entire office was privy to my love
life!” she says. “She was new to the company, so I’m guessing she used my information as a way to chat up the team and get ‘in’. I’ve become much more careful about trusting colleagues with intimate stuff now,” she adds. Even if your personal details aren’t all that juicy, if you’re not keen on becoming fodder for idle gossip mills, don’t make yourself vulnerable. Be smart about what you share with who.
After 9 to 5, it’s ta-ta, goodbye
“I don’t know how others stand on socialising afterhours with colleagues, but I prefer to keep work and my personal life separate,” shares copywriter Raymond Desai. “Work dinners are one thing, but once I’m done with the workday, I leave it – and colleagues – behind, and unwind with my buddies. I’m already spending nine hours a day at work. I need my space... some time away from it all.” If this strikes a chord with you, make sure to separate business from pleasure.
To friend or not to friend
Superheroes hide their identities for a reason – to ensure their professional life doesn’t encroach on their personal life and vice versa. In the era of Facebook, we don’t need to be superheroes to achieve this feat. Entrepreneur Paul Rebello shares, “I’ve created two separate Facebook accounts – one for business and one for my personal use. That way, I don’t have to think twice about ‘friend’ing a new business contact. There’s no tension of friends tagging me in posts that could give clients the wrong impression,” he says. “And if I’ve had a bad day, I can vent without worrying about the wrong people reading my status and costing me business!” he addes. So if you have one social media account, monitor your activity carefully to maintain your privacy – and yes, secure your job. Make this your guide to making and maintainingfriendships at work. Go ahead and make a work pal. But remember, befriend wisely! yi OCTOBER 2014 Youth Incorporated 33

YOUTH ISSUES
Getting to the
depths of
Depression is not a sickness, it’s a disease. Clinical psychologist Priyanka Fernandes dispels the myths behind it and suggests measures to steer clear of it 34 Youth Incorporated OCTOBER 2014

The
newspapers these days seem to be filled with reports on suicides. Not only adult, but also and children, teenagers and youth. The immediate reaction to these reports is often ‘What could a school-going kid possibly be stressed about?’ And before you know it the suicide becomes hot gossip. But do people try to understand the truth and the misery the individual must have gone through to take such a drastic step? Rarely. The same is the case with celebrities who battled depression but decided to give up – Robin Williams, Whitney Houston, Heath Ledger, etc. While many give up, there are also those who have successfully battled it – Ben Stiller, Jim Carrey, J.K. Rowling, Billy Joel, Stephen Fry, Brooke Shields and Owen Wilson to name a few.
What is depression?
Depression does not discriminate between a children and adult, rich and poor or man and woman. You may have everything in life, what people envy you for, and you can still be a victim of depression. All that varies between individuals is the cause and the degree to which one feels depressed. Understanding depression is very important today as it is spreading and gaining increasing ground, especially among youth all around the world. Depression is defined as a state in which an individual is in a low mood that often negatively affects his or her thoughts, behaviour and daily functioning. Depression is usually due to psychological facts, but it could also be an outcome of certain timebound life events, medical conditions, nutritional deficiencies or side effects of medical treatments.
Clinically speaking
In psychiatry, depression falls under the broader spectrum of mood disorder, the two best-known of which are major depressive disorder commonly known as clinical depression or major depression and
bipolar disorder commonly known as ‘manic depression’. In general, depression is very subjective and is caused by various factors such as trauma, a difficult childhood, abuse, drug usage, death, strained relations, loss, injury and other external events as well. It can also be caused by genetic and biological factors like developmental problems in the womb or exposure to certain toxins which lead to the development of depression.
The happy chemical
Certain levels of chemicals in the human mind called the neurotransmitters are believed to play a major role in individuals suffering from depression – serotonin is one. Serotonin not only regulates our moods but appetite, sleep and certain cognitive functions too. Low levels of serotonin are believed to be one of the primary reasons for depression. Another important neurotransmitter that has recently gained focus is dopamine. Individuals with low dopamine are observed to suffer difficulties with memory, thinking, organisation and experience an inability to feel pleasure.
The symptoms
Anxiety, confusion, loneliness, crying spells, low self-worth, feelings of sadness, hopelessness, guilt, anger, hurt, etc are symptoms of depression. If one has been feeling most of the above symptoms over a period of two weeks it is important to seek help. Initially if the depression is caused by environmental stressors one can speak to family or close friends. But if that doesn’t help, consulting a professional psychiatrist, therapist or counsellor is important.
‘Shrink’ your problems away
Visiting a shrink or a psychologist is still considered a taboo in India, which is one of the reasons why individuals try battling their emotions on their own. While some become dependent on other individuals or groups many
others choose to escape their problems by indulging in vices like smoking, drinking and drugs. There are also those who become helpless and confused about the situation they’re in and decide to take their own lives.
You are not alone
Each of us has an equal right over happiness. Hence seeking help must from a professional must not be looking at as being shameful. In the same way a person down with a fever or the common cold visits a doctor, a person battling depression must contact a psychologist to get well.
WARD OFF DEPRESSION Stay positive Avoid stress Find a hobby, do more of it Meet people, make friends
There is hope
Depression can either be battled medically or psychologically or with a mixture of both. If a person’s depression is chronic, medication along with therapy is recommended as medication helps the chemical imbalance while therapy helps the individual become a self-reliant and fully-functioning individual who can cope with stress in the present as well as in the future. Contradictory to popular belief, anti-depressants do not have as many side effects as before. Today doctors are more cautious of individuals becoming dependent and abusing these medications and hence take several precautionary measures. A psychiatrist clinic is no longer a place where doctors just meet the client for a brief period and prescribe medication. It is more of a centre where they work with psychologists or therapists to conduct evaluations, diagnoses and then recommend treatment. Take control of your emotions rather than becoming the victim and accepting sadness as a part of your destiny. As Robin Williams once said, “You’re only given one little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.” yi OCTOBER 2014 Youth Incorporated 35

n 2008 the number of Indian students who sought education in Canada was a mere 3,000. Today, this number has seen a four-fold increase. Move over UK and US, Canada is the newest international study destination. I, for one, can name at least five friends who have moved or who are in the process of moving to Canada. Many believe Canada as a study destination is a trend, one that might soon die a natural death like most trends do. But I’d like to believe otherwise. With cheaper options for education, internationally acclaimed universities, a cultural mélange and its picturesque outdoors, Canada as a study destination is a trend that is here to stay.
Why Canada?
“I always felt I could live, settle and establish a working life; the quality of life is very high in Canada,” says Lionel D’souza, an Indian who moved to Canada four years ago as a student. It is a misconception that most students who look at international education consider the UK and the US as their first options. Today, a number of people who seek foreign education are considering Canada as their sole option. A reason – its large number of top rated universities. Along with this, there are other reasons like the quality of education; the cultural range and its relatively low cost are also reasons for choice of this country. “Cost, quality of education and immigration rules are the reasons why I chose Canada as my study destination,” says Joel Rosario a global business management student at Humber College, Canada.
Master’s degree in Canada
Popularly known as grad school, master’s programmes are extremely popular among international students in Canada. One can find a host of programmes that range from
subjects in the arts and humanities (MA) to different areas in science and engineering (MSc) as well. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college is mandatory for Indian students looking at pursuing a master’s in Canada. A master’s degree is usually a 12-month course; however, its duration largely depends on the university it is being pursued from.
MBA in Canada
One of the most popular areas of study, MBA degrees are probably one of the most sought after areas of study for both national and international students. The Richard Ivey School of Business, Rotman School of Management and Queen’s School of Business are some of the top MBA schools in Canada. According to the North American QS Top Business Schools Report 2010, Canada produced the most number of employable MBA graduates – a clear indicator of top quality education and teaching.
Undergraduate courses in Canada
A bachelor’s degree in Canada takes between three and four years to complete. Along with bachelor’s degree, a student fresh out of school can also choose between undergraduate certificate courses and diplomas. The difference in the two generally extends to the duration of the course. Not all courses are of the stipulated duration i.e. 3-4 years for a bachelor’s and 1-2 years for a certificate or diploma course; more often than not it depends on the university and more importantly, the college or university it is being pursed from. “While most students opt for safe choices like engineering, IT and MBA, there are many other undergraduate and graduate degree programmes offered in Canada,” says educational counsellor Swati Salunkhe of students opting only for master’s programmes in Canada.
Visa laws in Canada
Canada’s lenient visa laws are one of the main reasons why an increasing number of Indian students are opting for a Canadian education. Visa applications from Indian students applying to universities in Canada are more often than not put on the fast track. • An Indian student can work in Canada while they study. • Students who work on campus do not need a work permit as long as they have a valid study permit. • However, those who wish to work off campus will need a work permit • Off-campus work permits allows students to work for 20 hours during terms and full-time during breaks and holidays. However, this might not apply to all universities, institites or colleges. • Alternatively, after a student has completed his graduation from a private or a public institute, he is granted a work visa of the same duration of his course up to a maximum of three years. A student pursuing a four-year programme will be given a three-year work visa, whereas a student pursuing a 12-month programme will be given a 12-month work visa. • A student must apply for a work permit within 90 days of course completion. During the duration of his stay, he is free to change jobs and areas of work as and when he likes.
Canada VS US and UK
When asked what sets Canada apart from the US and the UK, education counsellor Swati Salunkhe says, “Canada has one of the world’s best educational systems. International students are also allowed to work both on campus and off campus. Compared to other countries, medical insurance is inexpensive in Canada yet the services that Canadian hospitals provide are among some of the most advanced and accessible in the world. Canadian education is also within your means with high possibility of immigration.” OCTOBER 2014 Youth Incorporated 37

A sum total of good education standards, employment, inexpensive health care and a high chance of immigration make Canada a viable international study destination.
Cost of studying in Canada
The cost of studying in Canada can roughly be divided into applications to universities cost, tuition fees and other costs that comprise travel expenditure, medical, and most importantly, visa costs. That being said, the cost of studying in Canada in comparison to other countries is on the lower side. It is one of the reasons why several Indian students start their educational journey into Canada by opting for a bachelor’s degree as opposed to a direct master’s or a postgraduation qualification.
Scholarships to TOP Canada Under graduate courses in Canada CANADIAN could cost anywhere from three UNIVERSITIES to eight lakh rupees, whereas postgraduate or master’s courses – three to fifteen lakh rupees. Although a relatively lower cost as compared to the UK and the US, the sum total can work up to quite a huge amount at the end of a course. The best way for a student to evade the payment of university fees or tuition fees is to apply for scholarships. Scholarships are available across different courses and universities thus making application easy. Wide varieties of scholarships are offered by both the Canadian and the Indian governments and can be applied for by academically enriched students looking for financial assistance and aid.

Golfing with M Professional golfer Sharmila Nicollet talks to Youth Inc about her colourful career, fitness, modelling, and of course, golf
What inspired you to take up golf? Did you feel an instant love for the game?
I am a sportsperson at heart. I was a state level swimmer and an athlete, but once I started playing golf I immediately fell in love with it. It is very challenging both mentally and physically which intrigued me. I love the ambience of a golf course, the sophistication and class of golfers, and the longevity that comes with it. I can play golf for as long as I wish to. All of these factors made me choose golf and I haven’t regretted that decision one bit.
At such a young age you have a list of remarkable achievements; do you now feel the pressure to persistently perform?

The future of golf in India
I think golf has a great future in our country. Of course cricket is like a religion and you cannot compare the two. But as far as golf is concerned, the only things our country lack are sponsors and infrastructure – the number of golf courses, the driving ranges not only for professionals but also for the public so everyone gets an equal opportunity to understand and showcase their talents. Indian golfers have consistently delivered good performance at both domestic and international events. People can and have begun to look at the sport as a career option and with the inclusion of golf in the 2016 Summer Olympics, this country has a bright future.

I never had a normal friend circle, teenage, school or college life. I was always travelling and had to sacrifice an ordinary teenager’s school life to pursue it privately after 8th grade. However, I was as good academically as I was on the golf course. Hence it was a tough decision for me to not pursue higher studies. Instead I turned pro at the age of 18. I was into other sports as well, but they had to take a backseat to prevent risk of injuries that could affect my golf. One has to sacrifice in order to achieve something, especially in sports, and I’m used to it.
There is a mismatch in the level of the men’s tour and the ladies' tour in terms of number of tournaments, media coverage, prize money and general profile. We therefore have to work that much harder to gain the same amount of recognition and respect as men do. However, it is changing; a few other girls and I from India have the opportunity to perform well internationally, which, I think will encourage young girls to take up golf. We now also have top quality events like the Hero Women’s Indian Open coming into India; it will surely help the growth of the game.

If you were working in guest relations/front office or related areas while employed in the hotel industry, then you could easily transfer your experience and skills to similar work in other industries, including banking, insurance, travel and tourism, media, public relations, recruitment agencies, etc. Widen your job search as positions suited to your level of experience and aspirations may not be available when you want in the sector or industry which is your first priority. You may also consider openings in sales and marketing or human resource management in various industries. It would be a good idea to enhance your resume with an MBA (full time, part-time or distance mode) along the way, for more enduring and assured prospects of advancement in the long term.

he birth of the internet is similar to the genesis of Adam and Eve. The internet would not exist without the web in the same manner Eve would not exist without Adam. It was created by a grand old man, Tim Berners-Lee in the similar fashion man and woman were created by the almighty. But the time taken to create it, definitely not seven days. Tim Berners-Lee, a scientist at CERN began conducting research on his project the World Wide Web in the 1980s. Launched for the basic purpose of information sharing across different locations amongst scientists, this project took flight after a potential was scene in its development. After much effort, in 1989 Berners-Lee successfully launched the World Wide Web. On this platform that was now ready to be used, the CERN scientist established a website – the very first of its kind in the world. Bearing information about project W3 aka the World Wide Web, the site can still be accessed in its original HTML-rich form. From its very first site to this day, the internet has seen tremendous change. We have laughed at memes, worshiped animals (read cats), witnessed countries squabble for dominance over the other, seen the lines between public and private lives blur, shopped to our hearts’ content, and a notable mention, saved thousands on free music, movies and art. What would we do without you, dear dear internet? The Internet Age celebrates the power and might of the internet as one of mankind’s greatest inventions. From being termed as an information highway, to its role as an entertainer, through this cover story we celebrate the internet’s majestic journey so far.

l Gore, the Vice President of the US from 1993 to 2001 first dubbed the internet as being an ‘information superhighway’. He stated that this body will allow information sharing and connection and communication as a global community. This is exactly what the internet has come to be decades later. A constant source of information, perpetrator of thought and trendsetter, the internet is for so many the sole source of information.
IMPARTER OF KNOWLEDGE
Wikipedia.com, Answers.com, Encyclopedia.com, Britannica.com, Howstuffworks.com and many more such sources of information get millions of hits daily. All kinds of information however complex or simple can be found with the simple click of a button. This open source of information is so convenient and hassle-free that most people today

prefer it as opposed physically visiting libraries to conduct research. It is because of sites like these that several libraries have been forced to shut shop and go online.
THE WHISTLEBLOWER
WikiLeaks, an online non-profit website is notorious for its work in bringing to the view of the general public and the media secrets of governments across the world, the internal happenings of wars, corruption and several political secrets. The secrets dispelled by Julian Assange, the creator of WikiLeaks have led to revolutions of sorts in different countries across the world. WikiLeaks believes in using the freedom of the press through the internet to share with the public important news and information.
THE EDUCATOR
Thanks to the internet, education is no longer limited to just the classroom. The internet has not only made
studying easy, but it has also made it so much more accessible. Massive Online Open Courses and distance education programmes offered by some of the most prestigious global universities can today be taken full advantage of irrespective of geographical location, further proving the point – the internet is an information superhighway of sorts.
THE NEWS MACHINE
One of the easiest ways to tell what’s going on across the globe is the internet. This does not only translate to news, but any kind of information needed. The power of the internet to divulge information happening in any part of the world within seconds has seen that much of a boon that it has subsequently led to the dwindling of newspaper and magazine subscribers. Physical news media houses have therefore begun investing in the online space, thus catapulting the idea of the internet as an information expressway.

It might come as a surprise, but the internet plays a vital role in shaping and defining the opinion of its users.
S
ocial networking websites like 4chan, Reddit, Branch, Zammrs, Quora, etc although not as popular as Facebook and Twitter, have been creating quite a few waves in the way ideas, concepts and thoughts have come to be shared. Not only have these sites become platforms through which its users share information, but it also propagates thought and public opinion. Often described as a more meaningful place of hangout, these websites encourage interaction with people outside of accquaintances, peer groups and family. This often exposes a person to thought and idea that a person was not witness to up until now.
SHARING INFORMATION
4chan, Reddit, Branch, Quora, etc are social networking sites, but they function in a different fashion. For the most part, these sites can hardly be compared to Facebook and Twitter.
It is on these sites that users can pen down anything that’s on their mind. The topics of discussion can range from entertainment to news, education to fashion and anything under the sun. The user can then choose to discuss these topics with anyone active or online on the site. This way a simple thought is shared and discussed acorss a wide variety of poeple half of whom probably don’t even share the same country of city of residence. Some rebut, some agree and some others share tidbits of information that was up until then unheard of. Users are not limited to a selected set of ‘friends or followers’ but are free to converse with anyone, anywhere in the world. If Facebook is considered ‘traditional’ social networking, this is anything but that.
INTELLECTS VS THE PSEUDO INTELLECTS
These public opinion platforms have often been described as a place where the intellectual kind of the
internet thrive. This is true because discussions encompass so much more than just sharing, liking, retweeting and commenting on posts. A mere thought, piece of news or information leads to elaborate discussions, most of which come to influence its readers. In a way, Reddit, 4chan, Zammrs, Quora and the likes are much more sophisticated from its cousins Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.
A NEW WAY OF INTERACTION
Reddit and Branch conduct chat sessions with celebrities and bigwigs from different industries across the world. These interactions allow laymen to get to know famous faces better. But why are these platforms chosen? One of the reasons is because of their decentralised structure – a user is free to create everything from his own content, his own rules for mass particpiation and even his community or audience. The freedom offered here is unmatched. OCTOBER 2014 Youth Incorporated 47

rowdfunding, a concept that has been gaining momentum over the last few years has the internet to be thankful for for its existence. Crowdfunding uses the tentacles of the internet to raise money to fund everything from business ideas, education, social causes and the like. Since this concept went live, it has become an incredibly popular, and is a widely used medium of raising money.
HOW DOES CROWDFUNDING WORK?
As the name suggests, crowdfunding is collection of money from the public or ‘crowds’. The intention of crowdfunding is usually for a noble cause, meaning a person who invests in crowdfunding does so without any intention of gaining anything in the process. A contributor therefore believes in the success of an idea and hence deems it fit to make a monetary investment. The money, however,

does not come from just one person but from multiple people online. Crowdfunding has funded movies, inventions, campaigns and even travel.
THE INTERNET AND CROWDFUNDING
Without the internet, crowdfunding would hardly be possible. Imagine sharing an idea with as many people as you know in the hope that they believe in it and contribute to its development. The chances of that idea actually seeing the light of day are slim. The simple reason, the number of people you know in reality is nothing in comparison to those you will encounter online. With the help of the internet a person can get his idea out to as many people as he wants with the help of social media, friends of friends of friends, and of course, newly launched crowdfunding platforms.
CROWDFUNDING’S SUCCESS STORIES
Using crowdfunding to fund a
business or an idea doesn’t always guarantee success. Along with the usage of one of the most powerful marketing tools, the internet, there are a number of other details that have to be perfected in order to witness success. While there have been fails, there have also been several success stories. Some of them are: Visit to the happiest place on earth Savanah, a mother detected with stage four cancer wanted to take her daughter to Disney World but didn’t have the money for it. Her dream to take her daughter to Disney World became successful after her campaign was completely crowdfunded by netizens. Aam Admi Party’s money The Aam Admi Party collected `20 crores in the span of nine months from over 80, 000 people not only in India but also overseas through crowdfunding. The money was used to fund the party’s participation on the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year.

Buzzfeed. It’s been one hour and you still can’t seem to log out. Don’t pretend like this has never happened to you, because it definitely has! That’s exactly how entertaining the internet is. With so much fodder for your idle mind, it is the best way to take a break from work and studies.
THANK GOD FOR INTERNET LISTS
You want to read to distract yourself, but nothing too complex and lengthy. The internet has just the right thing for you – lists. If you’re are clueless about these quick, snappy, breezy reads, it’s time for some exploration. Internet lists cover topics that include things as bizarre as ‘21 ways to swear using emojis’ to ‘Brain facts your brain doesn’t know about’, you can find anything to entertain you. What
makes these lists so much fun? Their bizarre nature, the fact that they have very little to read (works for those who dislike reading, 80% of netizens), and big, blown-up images of course. What would we do without these indispensible sources of information, just what?
VIRAL FEVER
Sure you enjoy listening to songs and watching videos online, but what about comedy videos, beauty tutorials, vines, kids talking gibberish, cats going insane over wool balls and live shows you might have missed? There is the internet for that. Videos are for those who wish to only use two of their six senses, their sense of sound and sight. Hours can be spent just jumping from one video to the next; before you know it you’ve blown up the better part of your day just being entertained and that too for free!
THE MEME GENERATION
This is one of the best parts of the internet – memes and trolls. It is practically impossible not be entertained by the randomness of the Doge Meme or the desperation of the ‘Y U no?’ face or Grumpy cat’s perpetually annoyed face. As bizarre as they might be, they are ridiculously funny. Not that we are complaining, but everything that becomes a trend automatically finds its way to becoming a meme – Alia Bhatt after her Koffee with Karan debacle, Ryan Gosling after the birth of his baby, Miley Cyrus after her Wrecking Ball video, etc. The best part of memes and trolls – you can create them yourself as well. Meme generators allow you to create your own funny meme, maybe about a friend, a relative or a colleague even.

I HAVE MORE FACEBOOK FRIENDS THAN YOU
2000 Facebook friends, 500-odd likes on each profile picture, 100 retweets, 4000 Instagram hearts define popularity today. The need to feel accepted goes to the extent of people actually asking their friends to like and comment on something they have posted. This is no joke; it is exactly what the world has come to all thanks to social media.

Wordsmiths and grammar Nazis across
the world have been fighting relentlessly for the justice of the English language, but are failing. The Oxford English Dictionary recently added internet slangs like OMG, LOL, IMHO and several other abbreviations to their dictionary. Failing and how! It’s okay to use internet slang when on the internet but when you LOL in real life, there is a problem.
VACATION SELFIE, WORK SELFIE, SCHOOL SELFIE
Social media has taken this trend to absolute extremes. Facebook made sharing every moment trendy, Instagram made selfie the word of the year in 2013 and Snapchat exalted this trend to dangerous levels of narcissism. Taking selfies comes from an individual’s desire to be socially accepted. While it is human tendency to be accepted in social groups, falling prey to extreme levels of digital selfobsession where there is a constant need to upload images for likes is unhealthy.
IT’S OKAY TO BE ‘SOCIAL’
In spite of its many pitfalls, social media is a boon. It brings the world closer, connects people across continents and propagates the sharing of ideas and thought. Irrespective of the number of social media sites a person is logged in to, moderation in usage is key. So the next time you have the urge to upload a selfie, ask yourself if it is really that important to the point where it will change your life. You’ll have your answer. aking on one too many roles, entertainer, guru and a source of information and news, the internet is a marvel in itself. A project that was launched around 23 years ago, it is today an indispensible part of everyone’s lives. Can you possibly imagine what the world would be without the internet? There is no doubt about the surmountable potential of the internet and the role that it plays in the lives of its users. But are we looking at the internet through rose-tinted glasses? Like the yin and the yang, the internet has its dark side too. One that remains unseen and unheard to a majority of its billions of users across the world.
INFORMATION, INFORMATION, INFORMATION
For most of its users, the internet has become the primary source of information. Gone are the days of visiting libraries to research or gather
DARK SIDE
information. It is even safe to say that the internet is the sole reason why several physical libraries across the world have been forced to go online. The joy of sitting in a room full of books is unparalled, but with a generation that has access to the world with the touch of a single button, there is hardly a way around it. This brings us the question of accuracy. While there is plenty of information available on the internet, not all of it is accurate. Which is why everything on the internet has to be viewed with an ounce of scepticism. Relying too much on one source of information is often does more harm than good. Yes, the internet has a little too much information to offer, but it can often be wrong as well. However, wrong information is just aspect in this situation, there is also the problem of infomration being baised and misleading. This is often the case in politics. Advocates of certain philosphies make proclamations that convince naive minds to the
point where they are completely brainwashed. The information on the internet therefore often doesn’t faciliate independent thought.
SHARING IS WHAT MAKES THE INTERNET Piracy and copyright issues are two of the biggest problems that plague the internet and its people today. Several efforts have been made by governments of countries and bodies that function for the purpose of the internet to salvage theft of content freely available, but it still remains one of those issues that are very hard to tackle. The music, film and art industry are some of the many industries that face tremendous issues when it comes to theft of intellectual property. While some argue that sharing, for example, music or movies without paying a fee for them is wrong, there are those who believe that sharing or downloading of this content is what the internet is all about.

CRIME ON THE INTERNET
Hacking, credit card account thefts, propagating hate, stalking, etc encompass cybercrime. Cyber criminals target individuals, multinational institutions, websites and even governments. A heinous crime that more often than not leads to detrimental effects, cybercrime is not easy to tackle. Cyber criminals lurk through malwares, viruses and denialof-service attacks. The problem with this kind of crime is that its perpretators are not easy to pin down. In spite of tremendous efforts made by governments and international internet governing bodies, catching a cyber criminal is no easy feat. Since it requires a good amount of knowledge of the working of computers and the internal functioning of software, culprits commit a crime and cover up their footprints with ease. The battle to banish cybercrime is therefore not an easy one to win.
INTERNET ADDICTION DISORDER
Whoever thought internet addiction was a real thing? Sure, the internet satisfies a user’s every need, but how could that be a bad thing? Different people use the internet differently. Some might use it daily, whereas many others might use as often as one in two or three days to check their email or to log into their social media accounts. The problem is when there is a need to constantly social network, compulsively use pornographic websites and adult chat rooms, indulge in online gambling and betting and completely ignoring your social life to make way for your online one. If you’re still not convinced about the seriousness of this thing called internet addiction, this will convince you. To deal with internet addicts, there are several groups and counselling centres
that help people get over ‘Internet Addiction Disorder’.
THE NAME GAME
Identify theft and identity frauds refer to the stealing of individuals’ names and proof of identities for illicit practices. Along with financial i.e. credit card related crimes, identity theft also takes the shape of paedophilia, insurance related crimes, assuming another person’s identity etc. Popular techniques used for identity theft is rummaging through rubbish to find personal details of individuals, compulsive browsing through social networking sites, hacking into online databases of documentations of banks, colleges, etc.
USE WISELY
Irrespective of the many negatives of the internet, its usage is hardly curbed or restricted. For example is there an age beyond which a child must be allowed to use the internet? Should a child be given access to view every site that exists? There are restirctions to discourage viewing of certain webistes, but they rely more on computer as opposed to internet tchnicalities. For example, pornographic sites have no kind of barrier for age limit. Anyone is allowed access to these sites. It is therefore safe to say that the internet although an advantage has brought with it a couple of disadvantages as well.

THE INTERNET AND ITS CARBON FOOTPRINT
Believe it or not, the internet is responsible for the emission of 300 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. This number, however, is an estimate as it is practically impossible to predict the number of devices in companies and houses that use the internet and consequently, energy consumed to use it.
BEFORE GOOGLE
It took a while before Google received its cult status. Archie, a tool allowing people to search for files is considered to be the first search engine ever. Of course, there were a number of others that followed suit, but none of them could match the efficiency and the user-friendly interface of Google.
IS THE INTERNET THE WEB OR THE WEB THE INTERNET?
Answer: None. For starters, the internet and the web are two completely different entities. The difference between the two you may ask? The internet connects your computer to other computers across the world as a way of sharing and using content. Whereas, the web is the platform that lets you use the content available on the internet.
INTERNET, THE BEST MATCHMAKER
A recent study revealed that around 19% of the world’s population have met their significant others through the internet. No, not friends, relatives or family members – but the internet has played matchmaker for thousands of couples across the globe.
THE FIRST WEBSITE IS STILL ALIVE
The first website created in 1991 is still alive and kicking almost 23 years after it was first launched. The website is a
simple document explaining what the World Wide Web is. How apt we say, how apt.
THE INTERNET AND ITS USERS
China has the maximum number of internet users in the world, around 642 million users. This number is greater than users in three countries, USA, India and Japan combined.
LESS WORK, MORE DISTRACTIONS
A recent study analysed that most people who use the internet use it less for work and more to satisfy distractions as a result of it, surfing sites like Yahoo News, Facebook, Twitter and the universal source of everything entertaining, Buzzfeed. Several employers have come to understand this and have thus blocked a number of sites. Note: Blocking a website is inversely related to productivity. yi OCTOBER 2014 Youth Incorporated 53

He would say a word and the patient had to reply with the first thought or image that came to his mind. If Mr Freud were to use the words ‘first date’ as a part of those tests, we’re pretty sure most people would say ‘movie’ or ‘dinner’. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but movie and dinner dates are so old-school, they’re boring! If you want to take your date to someplace fun and memorable, so much so that they can’t wait to see you again and again, these ideas will work great for you. Whether the relationship lasts beyond one date or not, memories from these 10 unique dates will stay with you.
ROOFTOP ROMANCE
Move over candle light dinners, rooftop dates are the new rage. Be it Breeze in Mumbai, Amour in Delhi or The Persian Terrace in Bangalore, the country has a host of rooftop restaurants that offer panoramic views, great ambience and delicious food. Take the lady or man in your life to one of these places for a meal a little before sunset and enjoy a magical evening as you two watch the sun go down while you get to know each other better.
STARLIT PICNIC
Pack some juice, sandwiches or a bottle of some fine wine and head to any open space like a park, ground or field with your significant other. Head out in the evening to enjoy your mini picnic under a blanket of stars. This is sure to be an evening straight out of fairytales.
FURRY FRIENDS
If both you and your date are animal lovers, take them to a nearby animal shelter and spend the day playing with kittens, petting dogs or feeding birds. Volunteer to spend your time with furry friends; both your date and the animals will thank you for it.
SPICE IT UP WITH ICE
This date will be super-cool, quite literally. Most cities now have ice skating rinks that are immensely popular and a lot of fun to visit. Head over to one of them with your date, put on skates and have some fun on the ice. You are sure to have a date brimming with slips and slides, lots of giggles and maybe even some hand holding.
EDU-DATE
Along with your partner, sign up for a one day workshop on anything that interests the two of you. It could anything from learning Italian to ballroom dancing to tarot card reading – the options are plenty. Find something that will bind the two of you and introduce you to new things.
THE ADVENTUROUS AMOUR
If you’re feeling rather adventurous, why not hit an amusement park with your date? You’re never too old for the thrills of adventurous rollercosters. Gear up for a day full of screams, shouts, excitement and adrenaline rushes.
BOWL ‘EM OVER
Bowling is an effortless and casual date idea. Bowling alleys have a low stress environment, so your date will
feel relaxed and comfortable – a must for a first date. You two will end up bonding while you indulging in some friendly competition.
EXPLORE THE HOME TURF
It is easy to take one’s home city for granted, but have you ever given a thought to the fact that every year thousands of people visit it as tourists? Take your date along to explore your home city from a different perspective (there’s so much to discover, it’s not even funny) and finally get around to seeing and doing all that you have always wanted to do in your city. Spend the morning sight-seeing, an afternoon meal at a local restaurant and wind up your date with hot cuppa tea or coffee.
LAUGH YOUR WAY TO LOVE
Laughing together is the best thing can happen on a date. If you don’t trust your comedic caper enough, take your date for a live comedy show. Read up to find an interesting standup comic event that might be happening in your city. After all, there is no greater bonding than laughing at the same jokes.
THE NATURAL LIAISON
If you and your partner love the beauty and peace of being surrounded by nature, a day spent trekking in the wilderness is ideal for you. Pick an easy to trek trail in the hills and set off. A day in the company of nature and isolated from city crowds will go a long way in allowing you to spend some quality time together. The best time to plan a trek is the monsoon. yi

Don’t miss Berghain: One of the most famous nightclubs in the world, it has a fervent fan following and is known for its parties that begin post 4 am. Aarushi Agarwal explains why you need to get on your cycle and take a dive into the benefits this two-wheeled steel-deal has to offer
C
ycling is good for health, the environment and your body. Due to this, it is fast gaining popularity in the country not only as recreation, but also as a sport and a career. Cycling is great form of exercise, an innovative idea for a date or even just as training to build stamina. It is the act itself and not the reason that offers the liberation. So invest in a bike a see its benefits for yourself.

ADVANTAGES OF BIKING
Physical well-being Cycling helps beat traffic and get to places faster. Simply put, it saves time and money. A study has revealed that cyclists spend 20 times lesser on commuting than people with cars. However, cycling has more important benefits. For starters, it has humungous health benefits. As a form of exercise it helps sleep deeper and look younger. It also helps with weight loss while also improving stamina greatly. Biking is rewarding when aiming to lose a few kilos. So good is biking that most gyms today have stationary cycles. Mental well-being Cycling also leaves an impact on your brain and its functioning. Getting on a bike causes the brain to release endorphins that make you a generally happier and positive person. It also helps build new brain cells in the hippocampus leading to better memory. This results in stress reduction and fosters creative thinking. The next time you feel lethargic just get on your bike. Cycling releases the neurotransmitter dopamine in your brain which increases energy levels. It also makes your cells more active thus increasing immunity and reducing your susceptibility to sicknesses. Biking also reduces the risk of cancer by 33% and heart disease by 50%. It lowers blood pressure, balances blood sugar and manages cholesterol levels.
BENEFITS TO THE ENVIRONMENT
Biking is great for the environment as well. Not only is it a good idea because you’re avoiding the use of precious fuel, but its use also reduces pollution. Parking it is never a problem as it doesn’t need as much space as a car. Cyclers are also known to take in lesser quantities of environmental toxins than passengers in taxis or buses. Cars and cycles will make the
same journey, but cycles will only use one fiftieth of the oxygen as a car. That said, one of best benefits cycles have on the environment is the lack of noise of pollution; there is no loud, annoying honking; instead there is a subtle bell that is no comparison to the noise-makers on cars and motorbikes. No engine noises too!
THE URBAN AWAKENING
Cycling is slowly gaining momentum in India, mainly because it’s pure fun. You can spot more and more cycles on the road today; at any given time of the day there are people of all age groups, religiously cycling, bending over their two-wheelers. The milkmen and dabbawallas have lost their monopoly over the vehicle.
TRIVIA Calories burnt per km in 30 minutes: 180 calories Longest bike: 35 seats The most expensive bike: $1 million Study cycling in India: National Cycling Academy (SAINCA), The National Institute of Sports (NIS) and The Cycling Federation of India (CFI) The question of where one can cycle is not of relevance anymore. Your street is great for a start. There are also a large number of cycling tracks and clubs sprouting up all over the country. These tracks organise
races and encourage beginners and riders of all ages to take up cycling. But if going outside is not viable for you, indoor cycling has its benefits too. An extreme form, mountain biking is another aspect that’s filled with adrenaline and excitement. MTB Himachal organises an annual mountain bike race in the thrilling valleys of the Himalaya. The annual cycling calendar is full and booming. Besides these, luxury brands have also noticed the spurt in biking across the world. Brands like Hermes and even Gucci have come out with their line of high-end cycles. Of course these high-end bikes retail for lakhs of rupees. However, for those starting off, basic bikes are ideal, prices for which start from two thousand rupees. Along with the bike, there is also a need for other equipment like helmets, knee and ankle pads, shoes and gloves for a safer ride.
YOU’RE NOT ALONE
There are plenty of cycling groups in India today. These groups organise trips and day outings on a regular basis. From the serene views and soothing climate to firsthand location experience, travelling with a bike is an exhilarating and enriching experience. You get to really travel and meet people who enjoy cycling. Some of the groups that offer you this experience include Art of Bicycle Trips, Cycling in India and Spice Roads Cycle Tours. yi The bicycle is a curios vehicle. Its passenger is its engine. – John Howard OCTOBER 2014 Youth Incorporated 61

POINT OF VIEW “Poetry and light come from challenging situations. If I had an ordinary life I’d be an ordinary person I know it’ll be ok But I’ll be smarter and deeper! Disillusionment is ok – many humans are flawed – very few are exceptional, which is why they are exceptions.”
Y
es, I know when we go through hell and back, it does not feel like the time to hear philosophy. We feel terrible and nothing anyone might learnedly espouse works. Well, nearly. Life seems awful and you feel like socking anyone who decides to be all holier than thou giving you all their lofty advice. Don’t bop me on the head if I say that it’s like school. We come into the world to grow and become better human beings and we go through much trial and tribulation to slap us into shape so to speak. This is my strong theory. Now whether you believe me or not you must admit it makes sense?
Learning from the bad
Surviving Disillusionment Nisha JamVwal shares her thoughts on surviving disappointment
Indian philosophy says you come to the world empty handed and leave empty handed as well, assuming of course that there is a soul that outlasts it all and is forever. There is no proof for any of this, but we have to go with gut feeling. My instinct through life has been that when sh*t hits the ceiling then there is some major learning I’ve had from it. Or when a relationship turns sour then there is something to be learnt from it and something better waiting right around the corner. That said, I have to confide that it's usually been the case that something better has happened immediately after, not even too far in the future. Fabulous, isn’t it? If we go to the gym to work out our muscles, then we live life and work out our soul through the rapids and troughs to enrich and strengthen the soul.

Even at a practical level the wisdom, knowledge and bandwidth one accumulates with hardship, experience and emotional trauma is invaluable. You just know how to deal with life than be an ignorant milk-sop who was sheltered and thought life was about designer shoes and first class air travel.
Don’t take life for granted
Natural calamity like landslides, storm, tsunamis teach us all that life is fragile and anything can happen any time, anywhere. We tend to easily forget the temporal nature of existence and how in the flickering of an eye we can lose parents’, friends, friendships, material possessions and go from prince to pauper or from a having a big, loving family to solitude and loss. For some reason I can’t explain the transitory nature of life. It never escapes me; how fragile human life is and how much we take it and the ones we love for granted. The sooner we realise how precious a gift every special relationship and every healthy second is, is the moment we will exult in every living second and also have more humility and tolerance. It’s this very ephemeral nature of existence that might even teach us to be grateful for what we’ve got, for a change. Think about it, life is indeed transient. Even we have limited time here and the sooner we value it all and celebrate it the happier we will be.
Experiences will make one better So here’s how I think it works and I do believe Shakespere would agree – we are all here to up our game, learn the ropes, become wise, experience experiences, learn right from wrong after committing both good and bad, experiencing everything and going through myriad scenarios – because only when we go through it all, the good, the bad and the ugly can we become wise, learn, understand, grow and metamorphose. yi

IT WAS SHAKESPEARE WHO HAD SAID “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages. At first, the infant, mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms. Then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel and shining morning face, creeping like snail unwillingly to school. And then the lover, sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier, full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard, jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel, seeking the bubble reputation even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice, in fair round belly with good capon lined, with eyes severe and beard of formal cut, full of wise saws and modern instances; and so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts into the lean and slippered pantaloon, with spectacles on nose and pouch on side; his youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide for his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice, turning again toward childish treble, pipes and whistles in his sound. Last scene of all, that ends this strange eventful history, is second childishness and mere oblivion, sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.” 63

THE WORLD OF THE ABSTRACT
Books are famed for their ability to take you to another place and time. However, transformational changes of the human body are less heard of. Here are stories with transformational protagonist themes, assuring you vague and truly fantastical experiences
THE BONE CLOCKS BY DAVID MITCHELL A new release and nominated for the Man Booker prize, this book is a hooking mystery. A teenage runaway, Holly, has a scarred childhood, nearpsychic visions, voices in her head and the perception of a nightmare bought to life. She has also attracted wanton mystics to her already traumatic life. The book is a coalition of different stories from absurdly dissimilar places coming together to make final sense. Here are some books that hold the same intrigue:
THE METAMORPHOSIS BY FRANZ KAFKA This story is the journey of a salesman Gregor Samsa and his metamorphosis into a creepy insectlike creature. The book makes one too many implications and attacks on human society and its pretentious ways. It also teaches a thing or two about families and their responses to transformations of members of people within their own family.
KAFKA ON THE SHORE BY HARUKI MURAKAMI
The book is the story of a teenage runway and a mentally retarded old man who traces lost cats for a living. A prophecy, a hint at an Oedipus complex and eating raw cats’ hearts, this novel is the perfect blend of the supernatural and crude realities. A mix of freaky and intriguing, the book has to be read and re-read to figure its true beauty.
FRANKENSTEIN BY MARY SHELLEY Victor Frankenstein, an eccentric scientist creates a creature from the stolen body parts of human beings in an unconventional science experiment. Once the creature is born, the scientist is frazzled by its oddity. As the story goes on the creature goes on a rampage of murderous activities against its creator.
THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY BY OSCAR WILDE
Based in Victorian England, this book is based on the story of a boy who sells his soul in exchange for perpetual youth and beauty. It encompasses Dorian’s greed for beauty, lust, ambition, glamour and love. Not to give out spoilers, but you definitely won’t look at selfportraits the same way again.
THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON BY F. SCOTT FITZGERALD
Let’s start backward. Mr Button is born with the appearance of an old man. From old man to young boy, the book encompasses Button’s journey every step of the way. An interesting read purely because of the abstract nature of the tale, the protagonist and Fitzgerald’s beautiful writing.

SOLO ARTISTS BIGGER THAN THEIR BANDS
They might have started out as part of bands, but their solo careers was what made them popular. Here’s a list of artists to said to their bands, ‘I don’t need you, I’m better off alone’. Metaphorically, of course BEYONCÉ
Band: Destiny’s Child Solo hits: If I Were a Boy, Halo, Diva, Flawless Destiny’s Child was one of the most popular bands in the 90s and early 2000s. Over what looked like an amicable disbanding, the girl group staring Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams and Beyoncé Knowles split for want of solo careers. While each launched their solo career, Beyoncé’s is undoubtedly the most colourful. Shine on, Queen-B!
STING
Band: The Police Solo hits: Desert Rose, Englishman in New York, Fields of Gold In what can be called one of the messiest rock band breakups, Gordon ‘Sting’ Summers split from The Police just as the band was topping charts and becoming popular globally. The reason – Sting’s annoying, bossy attitude towards his band-mates. While The Police’s fame died a natural death, Sting’s only rose.
MICHAEL JACKSON
Band: Jackson 5 Solo hits: Thriller, Man in the Mirror, Billie Jean Praised from the start for his musical and rhythmic depth, MJ started his solo career in the 1970s. The major reason why the incredibly popular child band parted ways was because its star, Michael, wanted to make his musical journey an individual one. His journey began with the release of the album that stills holds the world record for most copies sold in history, 110 million, you guys!
STEVIE NICKS
Band: Fleetwood Mac Solo hits: Edge of Seventeen, Talk to me, Leather and Lace With eight Grammy nominations, dubbed as one of ‘100 greatest singers of all time’ and ‘The Reigning Queen of Rock and Roll’, Stevie Nicks is nothing short of a legend. A career spanning four decades, millions of copies sold and a name associated with greatness, thank god she ventured solo.
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
Band: ‘N Sync Solo hits: Cry me a River, What Goes Around Comes Around, Mirrors Ah! The man that became famous in spite of the ‘boy-band’ stigma. You can love him or hate him, but there’s no escaping this multi-talented guy. He’s found his way to commercial fame, fitting collaborations and even acting. Way to go, JT!
OZZY OSBOURNE
Band: Black Sabbath Solo hits: Mama, I’m coming Home, Let Me Hear You Scream, Paranoid After being fired from the band for substance abuse (ha!) his wife, Sharon, took him under her reigns as manager. From then on he released eleven albums, all of which grossed millions, his music shining from his very first solo album release Blizzard of Ozz. OCTOBER 2014 Youth Incorporated 69

Costumes and parties are great, but this year, extend the Halloween spirit to movies as well. Watch these terrifying movies to honour the dead
HORROR HOURS THE HAUNTING (1999)
This movie is about a scientific experiment, a house and its ghostly past. Three subjects are let into a haunted mansion that comes alive once a study experiment goes underway. What happens next is sure to scare you.
HALLOWEEN (1978)
This is a franchise consisting of ten movies, all of which take place on the day of Halloween. With a protagonist who’s escaped from prison to stalk and kill people, this is the perfect marathon to start off Halloween.
Watch when you’re alone at home.
Watch when you’re in the mood to watch a scary movie marathon to give your heart some exercise.
PSYCHO (1960)
One of those horror classics, it’s the tried and tested formula of scary. From lonely girl in a hotel room to looming figure behind the shower curtain and dragging of corpses, this movie is Alfred Hitchcock’s gift to the horror genre. Watch when you want to be scared out of your wits!
THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE (1974)
Loosely based on the crimes of real-life criminal Ed Gein, this movie forces you to rethink the entire get ting-out-of-the-house business. It’s about a group of friends who are out on a trip and fall into the hands of a cannibal family. Dinner table and chainsaws, what else would a perfect dinner require? Watch when you’re hungry. Invite your friends over and stare at them creepily throughout the movie. Way to celebrate Halloween!
DONNIE DARKO (2001)
A high school kid with an imaginary giant rabbit visitor, psychological issues and an obsession with time travel, this one’s sort of new to the horror genre. It’s entertaining but scary at the same time. Watch when you’re in the mood to watch a horror flick, but of a different kind altogether.

PLACES AND EVENTS FOR THE MONTH
ILLUSIONS PUB, CHENNAI
Looking to loosen up? You’re in luck. VIBE: Illusions has a very lively and social feel to it. The lighting is perfect and adds to the intimacy. The entire ambience is the USP of the pub, even if it turns out to be a little heavy on the pocket. MUSIC: Rather kitschy, groove-worthy nevertheless. They also have a small makeshift dance floor that easily gets crowded once the night sets in. BITES AND BOOZE: In drinks, Mad Madras and Watermelon Basil Martini are sure winners. The Malai Kebab, Beef Lasagna, Oyster Pork and Beer Battered Onion Rings all make beautiful dishes. Their Annachi Curry Pasta is something you probably haven’t had before and will come back for. If you’ve come to Illusions for lunch, then the lunch combo is what you should certainly go for, it is both reasonable and savory. FAB OR DRAB: Thumbs up to the ambience and the alcohol. The music could do with a little help. The food is pretty good too. We’re surely coming back. 105, 1st floor, Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai, Mylapore, Chennai. -Swati Kanal

LEANIN’ TREE ART CAFÉ, BANGALORE
`500o for tw people
Some places are meant for the artist, thinker and poet in you. This is one of them. CUISINE: Assorted FOOD AND DRINK: The Moroccan Scented Cottage Cheese with grilled vegetables and The Barbeque Chicken Burger are good saviours for hungry stomachs. The waffles with their three sauces are divine. They have a range of beverages, from regular coffees to mocktails. Hot at Leanin’ Tree and the Leanin’ Tree special Smoothie are pretty good. OVERALL: This is a tiny place; for those who want intimacy and romance, it is perfect. Built around a tree, it seems to be structured out of a small house. It houses a small art gallery with beautiful paintings and a tree house-themed seating area. They also sell home-made jams and sauces. We would surely visit again for the ambience even though the food was average. 23, Patalamma Street, Opposite Pai Vista Convention Hall, Basavanagudi,Bangalore -Sriram Thyagarajan

COLABA SOCIAL, MUMBAI
Although targeted at those looking for a fun yet relaxed atmosphere to work in, the grunge and quirk here certainly appeal to a wider audience. CUISINE: Café and assorted FOOD AND DRINK: Try the Achmeda Mezze Platter and the Anda Shammi for starters as they are irresistible. Their Shawarma is average while the rest are more than appetising. We tried the OMG Burger and Nina Aunty’s Mutton Dhansak with brown rice. The burger was quite huge, filling and yummy, while the Dhan Sak was homely. We had a gorgeous Layer Cake for dessert. And then a Strawberry Iced Tea and an Aacharoska for a little afternoon fun. OVERALL: So work and play together? We aren’t saying no. The food is delicious and the ambience is right. Usage of the scanner, printer and internet is free to all. It’s easy on the pocket and vibrant on the vibe. B K Boman Behram Marg, Apollo Bandar, Colaba, Mumbai -Nirva Vira

Deepika Padukone VS the TOI
This fiasco started with Ms Padukone storming TOI Entertainment for using her (slight) cleavage-bearing images for illicit purposes. What should have ended with a simple apology from TOI has turned into a battle between the two parties. While the two fight till their throats run dry, we can’t seem to get enough of this hilarious tweet by Sahil Shah
