note Guru & Shishya

Right from when we were babies in a vulnerable state to struggling adolescents and much later in our adult lives, there are those who will stand by to help us through thick and thin. They range from our parents to siblings, and friends to teachers. We always depend on each other to learn, share knowledge and grow. But there a special few who have dedicated everything to be great teachers, counsellors, mentors and gurus. One may not recognise their sacrifices and efforts for not only educating us but also shaping each one of us into fine individuals. I still remember some of my kindergarten and school teachers who have left quite an impact on me. Specially my French tutor who was very strict with a no nonsense attitude when it came to studies and homework; but outside of this he was a great host and friendly person. I may have not at that time appreciated the teaching methods but when I passed with distinction and still get by with my French skills, I always remember to thank him. Life is a constant learning process - we learn how to dive, drive, derive and all that’s possible. One may ask what we have done in turn for our wonderful teachers? To what length have we gone to show our gratitude and thank them for their endless patience, love and time. If there any true tributes one can speak of then it’s the legendary Eklavya from Mahabharata who did not stop to think or hesitate for a second to cut off his right thumb as gurudakshina for his teacher Dronacharya. On this Teachers Day let us remember all the teachers, the ones we liked and loved and commemorate them for playing an important part and being the guiding force of our lives. To my favorite teachers - you all have shown me by example how to lead my life to the fullest and I thank you all every day for it.

Around the World India 2nd in the world for education-related queries on the web!

A

recent Google study on ‘Student on the Web’ has revealed that Indian folks are only next to their US counterparts in searching for answers to queries related to education. The study is a combination of Google search query patterns and an offline research study by TNS Australia on behalf of Google India. With growing Internet penetration in India and 35 percent of its population below the age of 20, the search results have surprised very few. Although it’s interesting to note that 60 percent of Indian students treat Internet as their primary source to gather information about educational courses and institutes, 40 percent of their search revolves around higher studies. Education related queries on Google in India are growing at over 46 percent on a yearly basis with queries coming from mobiles, which is growing at the pace of 135 percent. These statistics have once again put the inquisitiveness and desire of Indian students for qualitative education in the spotlight, and in the future, one can expect institutions to create more interactive content and websites for better results.

CAT DATES ANNOUNCED

T

he Common Admission Test (CAT) committee has announced the dates for the competitive CAT exams, which will start from 12 October 2012 and end on 6 November 2012. The sale of CAT vouchers will end on 17 September 2012 and the registration will end by 19 September 2012. The exams will be held earlier than previous years so that they don’t clash with the festive season of Diwali. The day of reckoning for MBA aspirants will be 9 January 2013, when the results will be declared. These results will determine the chances of students to get into the prestigious IIMs along with more than 130 B-schools in the country. The exam will be divided into 2 sections: quantitative ability and data interpretation, followed by verbal ability and logical reasoning. Each section comprises 30 questions and students will be given 70 minutes to complete each section.

SEX TO ENTER BENGAL TEXTBOOKS IN 2015

S

chools across Bengal will see the inclusion of sex education in their syllabus from 2015. This step has been taken to prevent the misinterpretation of information. This decision was initially met with opposition by some teachers who refused to teach the subject of sex education. However, after a meeting with the Council of Board of School Education in India (COBSE) and the West Bengal Board of Higher Secondary Education, it was decided that sex education should be educated in subjects such as science, sociology, psychology, etc instead of making it a separate subject. This move is a positive effort towards fighting the misconceptions that inhabit the minds of young students who do not have access to a reliable source of information. The addition of sex education will begin in class 8 and continue till class 12.

IIT- JEE courts trouble!

N

ine parents of the IIT-JEE aspirants along with the Forum for Fairness in Education has taken the new format of the competitive exam (applicable from 2013) to the Bombay High Court by calling the arrangement unfair. Introduced this year by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the new format of the exam will comprise two sets where JEE-Main will be followed by the JEE-Advanced exam and only top 20 percent performers of the former would be eligible to sit for the JEE-Advanced exams in their pursuit of getting admitted in the prestigious engineering institutions. The final selection, however, of the candidates will be based on the JEE-Advanced scores subject to condition that they are in the top 20 percentile in their board exam as well. The petition states that the decision to let only 20 percentile from each board eligible for the entrance test as “arbitrary, discriminative & unreasonable” as marks and competitiveness across boards cannot be equated. The petitioners have urged the new process to be set aside and the norms of the JEE 2012 to be followed even for this year. The petition further deems denying students to appear for the JEE- Advanced exam as an unfair and non-transparent admission practice.

TCS AND HDFC COME TOGETHER FOR START UP IN SPORTS EDUCATION

News

T

he country’s top IT honcho and mortgage lender have come together once again to invest in a new start up called ‘Kids Out of Home’ ( KOOH) that will deal in the hot, new segment of sports education. While their previous decade-old partnership had seen success in JV Intelenet, a business process outsourcing (BPO) venture, this particular outlet will try to encourage schools to outsource their sports education and adopt their structured curriculum, technology and infrastructure in order to motivate children to come out and play. TCS and HDFC’s latest venture has put them conveniently in the lucrative segment that already has start-ups such as Edusports, Leapstart and Sportseed as its frontrunners. It remains to be seen if corporate India can bring the much needed wave of change in the state of our country’s sports culture this time around. We certainly hope it does.

CBSE TESTS STUDENTS FOR MORALS

I

f you are a Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) student, your examination marks will not only reflect your academic knowledge but also your morals. The board is taking steps to ensure their students receive a wholesome education and graduate from school with their values intact. To ensure this, the board has decided to integrate moral values into the curriculum from this academic year. Students from class 9 to class 12 will be asked value-based questions in their examinations. Five percent weightage will be given in each subject to these questions, including in class 10 and class 12 board examinations. The questions will be integrated into their examinations across subjects like Hindi, English, math, science, economics, physics, chemistry, etc. An example of how a value-based question might appear in an economics examination is: 'A father in his will gives 40 percent each to his son and daughter and 20 percent to his servant who has been with him for long. Why has he done it and what is the value addition?' The answer to this will be gender equality and charity towards people who work for us. In biology, you may face a question such as: 'In the digestive system all elements work together to digest the food you eat. What is the lesson learnt?' The answer to this question will be if you work as a team you will achieve your goal. The board has made this move in order to follow an interdisciplinary approach to value education and to prevent our education system from becoming too commercial. Adding a moral-based assessment of students is an attempt to draw a student’s thinking to society and community instead of solely focusing on oneself. This step will help students to identify and preserve values such as friendship, honesty, integrity, etc.

Ring R for Education!

I

n 2010 when Indian Government had decided to set aside 25% seats for the underprivileged children in all the unaided private institutions under the Right to Education Act, it must not have anticipated the role technology would play later in restoring their vision. As per the latest reports, throngs of economically underprivileged children have kept the helplines of Right to Education Act busy since many schools in the city have failed to the implement the law which has prompted various activists and government agencies to keenly look into the matter. The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) created the RTE helpline numbers (044-28278742, 28211391) to help implement the legislation and give needy students access to private schools. Delhi-based NGO Social Jurist has also started national helplines (09868529459, 08826456565) for free legal assistance under the RTE Act to students from poor backgrounds. An SCERT official said “Most people are still unaware of the legislation. Many private schools claim that the RTE quota is not applicable to minority-administered schools. We are also getting complaints that some private schools are not allowing admission under the RTE Act. We will take every step to ensure that the RTE Act is a success in the state." Our fingers are certainly crossed!

WALTER MEAD TALKS TO YOUTH ABOUT FOREIGN POLICY

A

t an enlightening session held at the US Consulate, Mumbai, youth groups were given the opportunity to interact with Walter Mead who shared his extensive knowledge on the subject of foreign affairs. Mead is James Clarke Chace Professor of Foreign Affairs and Humanities at Bard College and Editor-atLarge of The American Interest magazine. He also contributes to various publications such as Foreign Affairs, The New Yorker, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. He said that the United States wants the world to look a lot more like Europe; that is to be rich, democratic, liberal and profoundly at peace with each other. Walter also expressed the hope of achieving "universal sunshine in India" so that all sections of society reap the benefits of development. A healthy exchange of ideas and observations followed when students and intellectuals shared their views and queries. SEPTEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 13

MINAL PATODIA TALKS ABOUT THE APPLICATIONS OF OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE IN EDUCATION AND HIGHLIGHTS SOME POPULAR PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS 16 Youth Incorporated ║ SEPTEMBER 2012

16 Open Source.indd 16

24-08-2012 13:48:34

O

pen source software is a boon for students from India who can rarely afford to pay for the high cost of copyrighted software and operating systems that need to be updated every few years. What is open source software you may ask? Well, the idea is firmly rooted in information copyright. Open source software is written by programmers who make their code and their program available for others to read and to build upon. It’s a collaborative effort and an easy comparison can be made with Wikipedia. With Wikipedia, which uses the Creative Commons license like open source software, writers from all over the world write the content for free for others to read and rewrite. Similarly, when working on a program, people collaborate to make different parts of the software and to test it. The final program is then

available for anyone on the Internet to download on their computers and to use, for free. The idea behind open source software began as a reaction to copyrights by companies such as Windows and Macintosh, which charge large sums for people to use their operating systems and programs. Open source programmers believe that everyone should have access to these tools, especially in developing countries where people often cannot afford to pay the high cost of proprietary software.

MISCONCEPTIONS

Some of the common objections to open source software are: 1. “Can it be that good if it’s free?” Yes, it can! Open source is more reliable than propriety software, faster to use and quite simple too. It’s designed so that anyone can use it; so, it’s not just for techies. 2. “You need to have specialised computer knowledge (be a geek) to use open source software.” Think of popular programs built on open source that you may have already used; such as Mozilla’s Firefox browser or blogging platform Wordpress. Other programs are just as simple to use, from operating systems like Ubuntu to photo editing software like Gimp.

POPULAR OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE UBUNTU

Ubuntu is an open source operating software that is fast and has automatic security updates. It’s compatible with all computers, and manufactures such as Dell and Lenovo are pre-installing it in their computers. It supports Firefox, Google Chrome, Microsoft Office and Skype. The moment you plug in your camera or mp3 player, you can immediately access it. There’s no need to install any software. It has its own music store, Rythmbox, which helps you to buy, browse and find your favourite artists. Ubuntu is full of free apps to help you manage, edit and share your photos and videos with the world, and just like android, it offers thousands of apps to choose from. FIREFOX

Firefox is a simple web browser running on operating systems like Microsoft, Linux, and Mac OSX. It has a simplified toolbar helping you to manage tabs, bookmarks and even a search engine. You can even customize your toolbar. Other features are the Password manager that remembers your passwords for you and pop-up blocker blocks all the forced advertisements on your screen. If you lose connection or accidentally shut the browser, it automatically restores your session. The download manager sorts the data you want to download.

AUDACITY

Audacity is a free sound editing program that allows you to put together different sounds, splice your audio and so on. You can cut and copy tracks and modulate voice. You also have special effects like equalisation, noise removal and normalize vocal remover. These features can almost help you create your own remix track and be a DJ!

OPEN OFFICE

Open Office is one of the greatest boons to students who often cannot pay the high prices required for Microsoft Office but require word processor, spreadsheet and presentation programs. Open Office gives you all of these for free, and you can export your file into formats that can be read on Microsoft.

_WALK OF LIFE

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS EVERYONE HATES

Suffering from pre-interview jitters? Aparna Sundaresan tells you how to tackle the most unsettling questions with ease.

T

he 'agni pareeksha' of growing up and becoming independent is the job interview. You might say the job interview is the employer’s way of deriving amusement from asking grotesque questions, but the truth is that like anything else in life, you must prove you are worthy of what you want, including that elusive dream job. The trick to acing this test and emerging relatively unscathed is being prepared. Starting with the least vicious, here are the ten most likely and most loathed, seatsquirming interview questions with a little tip on how to answer each. 10. Random trivia/mathematical question Example: “If a president’s term is five years and if India has had presidents continuously since 1950, how many presidents have we had till date?” Don’t say: “I’m sorry, but how is this related to the job?” Or a seemingly smart answer like “Enough to empty our treasury". You are being tested on your response to a stressful situation. Do say: “Let me get back to you on that after I’ve worked it out a bit.” Show them that you can handle stress well enough. Pull up a sheet of paper and a pen and try to figure it out. Even if your answer is incorrect, you will have demonstrated your ability to keep your cool under pressure. At the end of the interviews ask for the right answer. 9. Who is your role model and why? Don’t say: “I don’t have one. I observe and learn from everyone around me.” Witty? Maybe. Clever? No. Too vague, too evasive. Do say: A person and how they inspire you. They could be your parents, a friend or even

20 Youth Incorporated ║ SEPTEMBER 2012

a fictitious character from a book or film. If you can back your answer up with sufficient reasons, it’s good enough. The interviewer is trying to gauge the values and principles you hold dear through a personality. 8. Why do you want to work here? Don’t say: Anything negative about your previous job or colleagues, which has convinced you to change jobs. Or as a first-timer, “I have no choice”. Do say: What you like about the company. ALWAYS research the organisation, its objectives and its opportunities beforehand. Tell them that their goals or nature of work or anything else they do is in line with your goals, work ethic, aspirations, etc. 7. How long will you stay with us? Don’t say: “As long as I am needed here.” That makes you sound dispensable and replaceable as well as like someone with commitment issues. Do say: “As long as both the company and I feel that our goals and achievements are being met. I must continue to feel challenged to help my career grow.” It’s no secret that all employers look for long-term commitment and this is how you assure them of that without giving them an actual figure. 6. Convince me to hire you. Don’t say: “I am a good worker. I have so-and-so skills.” Chances are that

everyone invited to interview has the same set of skills. Do say: The achievements in your previous jobs. This is your chance to boast a little. Tell them what you have done and what more you are capable of. They know you have the skills, but do you know how to use them? What is it about you they will not find in anybody else? 5. What are your weaknesses? Don’t say: “I lose my temper quickly, but if you think about it, it is really a strength,” or any other weakness you can disguise as a strength. Do say: Your weaknesses. Admit them. Nobody is perfect. But also add that you are working on them. And don’t go overboard. Two or three should be enough. 4. Tell me about a time you failed. Don’t say: “There was this school exam I didn’t pass, but apart from that I have been pretty successful.” Do say: A professional endeavour that went pear-shaped and how you managed it. Again, you have to be willing to admit defeat. This is a trait employers believe shows good character. 3. Which is your favourite book/ movie? Don’t say: “Errr....” This is an unanticipated question that may cause you to fumble. Also, “I don’t really

have favourites. I like everything” is an escapist answer. Do say: One that you really like. And why. You are being tested on your decision-making skills, so make a decision! 2. Where do you see yourself in five years? Don’t say: Grand visions like a tenbedroom mansion or a Nobel Prize. We all have opulent dreams, but let us be practical. Do say: A senior position you want to grow into from the job you are trying for. Show them you believe in evolving. 1. Tell me about yourself. Don’t say: “I am a fun-loving person who is also hard-working and ambitious...” They don’t want your dating profile. Do say: In brief, an overview of your early years, education, work history and recent career experience. This is almost always the first question and is always open-ended, so give them a wide-ranging answer. It may seem like a retelling of your CV but it is the only appropriate response. Bonus nasty question: What is your dream job? Don’t say: Anything about a job. Do say: Something about the job environment. Most dream jobs exist in a happy workplace, so talk about the professional environment you would like to be in. yi SEPTEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 21

On campus placements are very common, leading to at least a 5-figure salary, depending on one’s individual drive and capability. Workplace choices are immense with the growth in the hotel industry, and if a five star is not your aim then you are not short of alternate options such as fast food joints, cruise ships, hospital catering and the list goes on. orld leaders met from the 2nd to the 5th of August 2012, at The World Trade Centre in Mumbai, to discuss issues concerning countries of the world. These leaders were attending the International Model United Nations

and were not older than 23 years of age. The Indian International Model United Nations (IIMUN) is the brainchild of an event management company called Aufklaren Events LLP, which was started by the youth, for the youth and of the youth. The event spanned over a period of five days, where different world issues were tackled across the numerous committees by ebullient students.

The venue was buzzing with formally dressed students, who looked excited and slightly stressed, carrying the burden of the countries they were representing. The opening ceremony saw some distinguished guests from a variety of fields. The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr Prithviraj Chavan, filmmaker Subhash Ghai, choreographer Shiamak Davar and music director Leslie Lewis were some of the famous personalities who graced the occasion. INDIA’S LARGEST MODEL UNITED NATIONS: IIMUN is the largest MUN (Model United Nations) in the country and will actually forward the resolutions passed by the committees to the United Nations. One of these students, Meher Bhalla, who is attending her 12th MUN spoke about her experience at the event. “At IIMUN the level of debating is high as there are some very experienced delegates present here,” says Meher. The debates are smooth even while discussing sensitive issues such as the topic of drones, which is being discussed in my committee (Disarmament and International Security Committee). Someday I would actually like to be a part of the United Nations and represent my country there.” THE DELEGATES Over one thousand delegates from all over the country, aged between 14-22 years, participated in this event. When the students arrived, they were seated in different areas, according to the committee they belonged to. The formal language and procedures followed by the United Nations were mirrored entirely by these committees. This took some getting used to for the students, especially avoiding personal pronouns, such as I, you, he, etc.

One of these students, Meher Bhalla, who is attending her 12th MUN spoke about her experience at the event. “At IIMUN the level of debating is very high as there are some very experienced delegates present here,” says Meher

Each committee was headed by a chair and a vice chair, who did a commendable job of keeping discussions on track, accustoming delegates to the required procedures and maintaining the systems of the United Nations. When required, they also threatened to send delegates ‘out for a walk’ if they witnessed unwelcome behaviour. The delegates arrived at the event equipped with ideas, solutions, facts and statistics and showed an in-depth understanding of not only the country they were representing, but the global scenario as well.

THE COMMITTEES The different committees at the IIMUN were DISEC (Disarmament and International Security Committee), ECOFIN (Economic and Financial Council), SPECPOL (Special Political and Decolonisation Committee), HRC (Human Rights Council), SC (Security Council), FSC (Futuristic Security Council), HSC (Historical Security Council), ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council), WHO (World Health Organisation), WTO (World Trade Organisation), UNDP (United

THE LIGHTER SIDE While intense discussions comprised most committee meetings, there were also some lighter moments enjoyed by the delegates. Here are some strange, humorous and absurd comments as reported by the international press at IIMUN.

Nations Development Programme), UNEP (United Nations Environment Program), Lok Sabha and the Executive Board. The Security Council saw some heated discussions as delegates prodded one another for relevant solutions. The Interpol saw the discussion on the illicit drug trade, and delegates discussed taking strict actions against drug trading, tracking trading routes of drugs, etc. The topic of discussion at the Lok Sabha was the controversial issue of the Lokpal Bill. Though conflicting opinions emerged during the session, decorum was maintained throughout. One can only hope this tolerant and productive debate will someday been seen during the Lok Sabha sessions held in Parliament. THE INTERNATIONAL PRESS There was also a small team of budding journalists, who played the role of the International press. Assembling for a quick meeting during the day, these scribes then headed to cover the happenings at various committees. Their journalistic sensibilities were at work throughout the day, even during lunch hours! If they spotted a delegate of China enjoying a friendly banter with the delegate of India, (which is unlikely

considering the constant tension between the two nations) these reporters were sure to capture an image and include this piece of gossip in their write-up. At the end of the day, the stories are compiled into a newsletter, which is distributed among the delegates on the following day. So, delegates being excessively aggressive or trying to squeeze in a nap during their sessions are likely to find these acts reported by the sneaky journalists. AN INDIAN UNITED NATIONS To add some colour to the event, the organisers of IIMUN decided to hold a ‘Traditional Day’ where students dressed in Indian attire, irrespective of the country they were representing. Seeing female delegates of Russia, China, France, etc in a saree might be an unlikely sight at the UN but not at IIMUN. Students flaunted their Indian attire, adding a desi flavour to

• “The world needs China!” • “Give me proof, delegate, proof!” • “You fluctuate!” • “Help and invade, help and invade! That’s what your nation does! • "Stay away from Iran! Iran doesn’t need you!” • “SH*T delegates! Did you hear him?” • “Vietnam was a mistake!” • “When is China expected?” • “Delegate, please be suited.” • “USA I don’t need your sympathy.” the committee meetings. Also, on the fourth day of the event, a Mumbai city tour was arranged for the benefit of the attendees from different cities. DECISION MAKERS OF THE FUTURE An event organised and attended entirely by students, IIMUN is evidence of the awareness and passion that drives the students of today. Although the event is in its inaugural year, the organisers of the event pushed themselves to secure the best venue, sponsors and logistics. Carried out under the guidance of 10 directors and 120 organisers, IIMUN is a great display of the organisational as well as intellectual abilities of the youth. With such a successful first year, IIMUN is sure to grow in scale and create great levels of change in the years to come. If these are the leaders of tomorrow, we can rest assured that the world is in safe hands. yi SEPTEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 27

Monetary issues for youngsters always count. This booming year the fee is same as it was in Feb 2012. For General/OBC, it’s `1200 + bank charges as applicable, and for SC/ ST/PD it amounts to `600 + bank charges as applicable. The mode of payment is net banking / credit / debit card on your frequently visited website (www.aicte-cmat.in) these days. Don’t fret if you don’t own those glossy cards. You could deposit the cash in any State Bank of India branch.

SMART STUDY IS FOR WINNERS

It’s not viable for the human mind to place all the text found in the textbooks in their brain cells. You need to incorporate smartness. The people on top are big smartys even if they pretend to be fools. You must know how many marks are dedicated to every question in each of your four ‘admission-deciding’ sectionsquantitative techniques and data interpretation, logical reasoning, language comprehension and general awareness. Just like football, here too

you are bound to a penalty. 1 mark would be deducted from your kitty for a wrong answer, however a correct answer gives you 4 marks. Attempt the simple and easy-to-go questions first. Revise before proceeding to learn new material.

‘CAN’T FIND SAMPLE PAPERS?’

The next question you fret about is- ‘I can’t find the sample papers?’ Relax and take a deep breath. CMAT is a new test just out of the oven, much sample material is not available online or in the market. But there’s always a hidden secret. The MAT and CAT have similar sections. You need to use and refer to the same sample material. You will find the MAT sample papers on MingleBox. com. If you prefer the feel of a book, you can purchase CMAT prep books in any bookstore all over India, or order them from Flipkart availing a 25 per cent discount (No, Flipkart doesn’t pay us to say this). We believe in aiding young minds to reach their dream. Some good books are ‘Mission MBA’ by Goyal ,‘CMAT’ by Khurana.‘Quantitative and Logical reasoning’ by G.K. Publishers is a favourite of students.

OFTEN-NEGLECTED SUPPORTS FOR BECOMING THE ‘TOPPER IDOL’

Ignoring a peaceful and restful sleep of 7 hours daily would mitigate your concentration levels. Psychological Theory of Consolidation has shown that sleep post studying helps consolidate the learned material in long-term memory aiding retrieval. Your problem of ‘forgetting’ on D-Day is mainly a non-retrieval issue. Eating a balanced diet along with drinking plenty of water is your support in turning you into a ‘topper idol’. Invest time for walks. These exquisite tips are sure to aid you bag admission and turn you into an elite and successful management professional- the ‘Epitomic One’! yi SEPTEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 29

MALHAR 2012

KING-SIZED MALHAR LOCAL Novel Catches

Malhar-local 2012 was nothing less than a ‘marvel’ imbibing ‘epitomic significant uniqueness’ for a college fest. The fest’s theme-Revolution was depicted with esteem, energy and fun. A team of 200 students who composed the ‘security team’ were trained by the Mumbai Police Bomb Detection Cell of how to frisk, identify a bomb and how to manage crisis situations. The LA Lounge (power nap station) rejuvenated tired volunteers and participants and helped them regain their zeal. Puddles, the mascot claimed it was hot and a little stinky within his costume.

Conclave of Esteem

A panel discussion about the revolutionary seeds of siege anchored by Suhasini Haider (prime time anchor for CNN IBN) was epitomic. Panelist Mani Shankar Aiyar (member of INC) said that the ‘seeds’ lied in the contradiction between the two biggest achievements- Development and Democracy. He viewed the opposition as being ‘off their heads’. He spoke about the current siege and couldn’t understand if Anna Hazare was ‘ fasting to die or dying to fast’. His response to a question about Indian Future was ‘to make him the Prime Minister’. According to Mr.Aiyar ‘ fairplay, justice and participation’ was necessary for a positive change in India. Another impressive Panelist Dr Waiel Awwad (war correspondent who was detained in Afghanistan before the fall of the Taliban government) was a voice from the ground enlightening everyone about the ‘Arab Spring’. He said that a change from being a normal person to being a burkha- cladded suppressed being wasn’t change. Speaking of ‘Slaughtering in the name of God’ in Afghanistan, he said that God has nothing to do with it. In a major part of the Arab world, there was more of a ‘ democrazy’ and ‘ idiocracy’ than a democracy. Panelist Shoma Chaudhary (managing editor of Tehelka) felt that Naxalism was incorrectly articulated. The consecutive kidnappings carried out by the Naxals seemed just to her. Being asked contradictory questions she clarified that she wasn’t a Maoist. Also, she pointed that the north-eastern areas are mineral rich but extracting this resource at the cost of the rights of the tribals was unfair. Panelist Dileep Padgaonkar (Chairman of the Panel of Interlocutors between Indian Government and separatists in Jammu and Kashmir) highlighted the audience about the formation of the panel, formation of innumerable reports that need urgent execution and also a meeting about a Safronite and a Hezbollah Jihadi.

Highlighting streaks

In the Keynote speech, P.Sainath spoke on Maharashtra having the highest GDP, largest number of billionaires and the highest count of farmer suicides. 23 year old Akbar Feroze boarded a year back on his cycle turning the ‘Cycle Natak’ into a country wide project. The objective was to take theatre to the rural dwellings. He put up an impromptu one-man play about how corporations mislead the common man. The conclave saw two speakers –Soli Sorabjee and Darius Khambata who beg to differ on legislation today.

Bamboozling Hell of a ride

Ragas, all day workshops, theatricals, events, social causes, arts were bustling from every corner in the exquisite campus. Express the espresso, Illuminati, the quiz that wasn’t, paint my ride and Capoeira turned out to be the signature events. Highlights among the Mr. Malhar participants were ‘Mother Man’ (who makes young Parsi women pregnant) and ‘No Man’( a crossdresser) who gave one of the judges a lap dance. Dazzling Malhar-ish Infinity (DMI) swayed all throughout this 3 day fest.

UMANG 2012

THE PIRATES PERVADE

From the Mouth of SuccessRetrospectum

People always ponder how the successful get to the epitome. Umang brought the famous and successful to talk to the youngsters giving them the much-needed gyan. Anurag Basu, Barfi Director spoke about everything right from Life in a Metro to his battle againt Leukemia. The Paul Coelho of the east- Amish Triparthi, author of the bestseller ‘Secret of the Nagas’ departed great advice. Shyam Benegal, the Godfather of Alternate cinema who has won the Padma shri and Padma Bhushan unfolded creating a marvel.

Crazy Hits

Crazy legs- the B-boy from Bronx, New York and popularly known as the architect of B-boying shook his crazy spellbinding legs leaving the crowd awe-struck. He also crazily taught the mesmerised audience a few mind-blowing moves. Rueda- de-Casino was taught vibrantly at Umang. Nah, it isn’t a gambling casino game, but a rare kind of circular salsa. Light isn’t anymore solely a form of energy; it was made a form of art through the unique ‘Light Painting’ Workshop’.

Groove it up

A spinning war amongst D.J’s made the audience spin and dance, rather than creating fear. The strings of ‘Hotness’ were let loose with the hot and glamorous model hunt. Diana Hayden and Marc Robinson were the dazzling judges. Who wants anything Moo-re? Beat boxing was a total star gainer. Vocal percussions, drum beats and

rhythmic rhythms were created sans instruments. Now that’s true art. Solo-B-boying got immense hootings from the crowd, while UV dancing and street dancing infused energy among all.

War of the Insane

This event was for all those who enjoy every jiffy soaked in insanity-they don’t suffer from it. There was a wacky game with really crazy rounds. Next, in ‘Balancing’, the youth got a chance to compete and flaunt their talent against uni-cyclers and tight-ropewalkers. For all the ‘ food lovers’, I mean ‘ free food lovers’(which comprises of all beings), they needed to grab a yummy doughnut from a height, run a mile for an appetizing pizza and gushdown a glass of chocolate milkshake in a time-frame. Who would chase gals when there was a ‘serious food chase’ happening.

Gaming got serious

Football- a religion did catch devotional eyes. Cyber games, UV Table Tennis and Robotics with robowars made gaming at Umang’12 seriously serious and fun.

Management Fest

The signature event of the Management Fest Department –PEHEL set the stage for innovative ideas and novel initiatives. It gave a platform to aspiring innovators and entrepreneurs to pitch their ideas to a panel of venture capitalists and industry head honchos. This was moo-re than the moo-re. n kindergarten, we listened to them in awe as they narrated enchanting fairy tales or revealed the magic of numbers. As we grow older, we occasionally fear them when they refuse to believe excuses such as “my dog ate my homework”. By the time we reach college, some of us grow indifferent to them, choosing to discreetly listen to Eminem songs instead of the ongoing lecture. Once we finish our education, we remember them fondly, finally understanding the value of the lessons they taught us and appreciating the times they tolerated us! Our teachers mould us, groom us, guide us, understand us and essentially make us the people we are. With such a big responsibility, it’s no surprise that teaching is referred to as ‘the noblest profession in the world’. While many countries celebrate World Teacher’s Day on the 5th of October, India celebrates the efforts of her teachers on the 5th of September, which is Dr. S Radhakrishnan’s birthday. After he was elected the 2nd President of India, a group of students asked Dr Radhakrishnan if they could celebrate his birthday. He replied, "Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if 5 September is observed as Teachers' Day." The profession of teaching has been valued throughout history, especially in India, where teachers are traditionally called gurus and viewed with God-like reverence. Though the methods of teaching have evolved from discourses under a tree to lectures in technologically equipped classrooms, the dedication and patience demanded of teachers remains the same. Indian history is brimming with stories of inspiring gurus and mentors. One such guru is Chankaya, who taught and groomed his student to such a degree, that the boy became one of the greatest rulers and warriors in history Chandragupta Maurya.

GURU DAKSHINA: THE GREATEST TRIBUTE TO A TEACHER

In recent years, there has been a change in the attitude of students and the respect with which they regard their teachers is sadly diminishing. However, in Indian mythology lies an inspiring and touching story of a student’s unflinching obedience and reverence for his teacher. That student was Eklavya. Eklavya was born a sudra (the lowest class according to the Vedic Caste System), which prevented him from being accepted as a student by any guru, including the renowned Dronacharya. Dejected by Drona’s refusal to teach him, Eklavya made a statue of Drona, which became a symbolic representation of his guru. Eklavya perched this statue next to a tree and prayed to it every day. The diligent Eklavya then tirelessly practised archery in front of this idol from dusk to dawn. According to legend, Eklavya mastered the art to such a degree, that one day he managed to seal a barking dog's mouth with his arrow, causing no injury to the dog! The suspicious Pandavas witnessed this sight and asked Eklavya to reveal the name of his teacher. Eklavya responded saying Dronacharya was his teacher and was then taken to him. On hearing Eklavya’s story, Dronacharya was pleased to see his loyalty and dedication. However, in order to protect the fated superiority of Arjuna, Dronacharya asked Eklavya for his right thumb as guru dakshina. Without any hesitation, Eklavya obeyed the request of his guru, cut off his thumb and offered it to Dronacharya. Although this crippled Eklavya's abilities as an archer, he considered it a small price to pay for the guidance and knowledge he gained from his beloved guru. yi SEPTEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 33

FAMOUS TEACHERS IN HISTORY “I am indebted to my father for living, but to my teacher for living well,” said the famous conqueror Alexander the Great. Here are some famous teachers from history who and their lasting contributions to the field of education.

ABBE CHARLES-MICHEL DE L'ÉPÉE: FATHER OF THE DEAF

This French philanthropist and educator decided to work towards providing education to the deaf after he witnessed two young girls communicating with each other though a sign language. He went on to establish the world’s first free school of the deaf and is regarded as one of the founding fathers of deaf education. In addition, he developed a sign language dictionary and penned a book titled ‘Instruction of Deaf and Dumb using Methodical Sign’.

SAVITRIBAI PHULE: FIRST WOMAN TEACHER IN INDIA

Teaching, especially in India, is arguably a woman-dominated profession. However, during the British rule, a woman called Savitribai battled the challenges of being the first woman teacher in India. While on her way to school, she would be pelted with rotten eggs, tomatoes, cow dung and stones by orthodox men. Unshaken by these vicious acts, Savitribai determinedly continued her work in the field of education and started the first girls’ school with the help of her husband. Eventually, Savitribai Phule was honoured by

the British government for her contributions to education.

AMOS B ALCOTT: THE MORAL EDUCATOR

Apart from being the father of Louisa May Alcott, author of the popular novel Little Women, Amos B Alcott has made other significant contributions to society, particularly in the field of education. Alcott dismissed traditional teaching methods and believed that children required moral, spiritual and spiritual nourishment as part of their education. This visionary educator admitted an African-American child into his school and refused to expel her, despite protests from parents. Alcott vehemently opposed any kind of corporal punishment being meted out to students. In fact, Alcott would sometimes offer students his own hand to strike as he believed a student’s failure reflected the shortcomings of his/her teacher.

develop their senses. Froebel provided individual attention to his students and said, "Children are like tiny flowers; they are varied and need care, but each is beautiful alone and glorious when seen in the community of peers."

CELEBRITY TEACHERS

Before these celebrities attained fame in their respective fields, they spent some part of their lives as teachers! Barack Obama: Before he began his political career, which led him to become the President of the United States, Barack Obama was a lecturer of constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School.

FRIEDRICH FROEBEL: FOUNDER OF KINDERGARTEN

This German educator re-defined early childhood education with his progressive contributions which resulted in his founding the kindergarten system of education. Froebel strongly believed in the use of toys as educational aids. He designed several balls, wooden blocks, rings, etc to facilitate learning through play. The philosophy behind his kindergarten schools was to meet the individual needs of children and use games and other activities to

Sheryl Crow: This talented singer taught music at an elementary school before making her way into the billboard charts and achieving fame as a music artist. JK Rowling: The creator of the beloved Harry Potter series, JK Rowling, used to teach English at a school in Portugal. Sylvester Stallone: Prior to making his millions as the star of the Rocky movies, Sty Stallone worked as a teacher, while he was studying, to make extra money. What did he teach? No surprise there, he was a gym teacher.

A TEACHER WHO INSPIRED ME... On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, celebrities share personal experiences of a teacher who inspired them SIDHARTH BHARDWAJ, ACTOR AND VJ

Teacher's Day has always been special to me as to I am sure all the kids in our country; may it be to trouble some teachers in good spirit or to take inspiration from them. Growing up as a cricketer, a cricket coach will always hold value in your life and so did my coach, Mr. Madan Lal, with whom I started playing cricket and learnt the skills and art of the most popular game of our country. Mr. Madan Lal was always an inspiration and I hoped someday I would play brilliant cricket like him. He was a major part of the World Cup winning Indian team in 1983 and has really set an example for me. I have literally grown up with him and even now, though I am in a totally different profession, I still sometimes go and practice with him at the Sirifort Club in Delhi with the same enthusiasm which I had when I was a teenager. Due to an injury that I had suffered, I had to give up my dream of being a cricketer, but Mr. Madan Lal never gave up on me, he still tells me to get back to cricket whenever I meet him. Mr. Madan Lal is not only my teacher and my inspiration, he is much more than that, he is what I would call a perfect example of a teacher – someone who believes in you when you don’t believe in yourself. His lessons to me extended beyond just cricket. This Teacher's Day I'd like to thank my teacher Mr. Madan Lal for all the memories and for teaching me the art of cricket and everything else that I have got from him. I wish him and all the awesome teachers a very Happy Teachers Day!

SHERNAZ TREASURYWALA, ACTRESS

It was quite recently that I discovered Seth Barrish in New York City. He is a very different kind of teacher. An awardwinning actor, director, and artistic director, he has spent the last two decades focusing on techniques that maximize spontaneity and bring performances to life. But I joined his class not for acting but writing. It was a solo show class. This class focuses on storytelling, writing and performing my own show. I have taken writing classes before but none have been as inspiring. I learnt not only more about writing but about comedy and performance. Everyone in the class was talented and a strong performer and writer. Seth cares. He cares about stories and writing and the integrity of the craft. He teaches not for the money but for the love of creating. Now, I have my own solo show and I couldn't have done it without him. Thanks Seth!

VATSAL SHETH, ACTOR

Throughout my school life, I was an introvert. Every year, we would have a personality contest in my school and the winner would be titled 'Mr School'. My English teacher, Mala Mehta nominated me as a contestant for this competition, without my knowledge. When the names of the contestants were announced, I was shocked to hear my name. I was petrified but my friends forced me to go on stage. When I reached backstage, I saw my teacher standing there. I nervously approached her and said, "I'm not going on stage. I can't do this. I'll end up stammering in front of everyone." She didn't listen to me; instead, she pushed me on stage! I stumbled onto the stage and was relieved when the nightmare was over. To my surprise, I actually won second prize at that competition. I would like to thank my teacher, who spotted the potential in me and helped me overcome my stage fright. It is because of her that I am an actor today. SEPTEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 35

_COVER STORY

I WORK ON THE PREMISE OF 'DE-SCHOOLING Photographer and professor David de Souza, loved

by his students for his unique teaching methods, shares his observations and experiences as a teacher

is exactly the way I practice it. I feel the theorists and academics came after the practitioners. So the people in the arts and sciences DID, and what they did later was 'theorised' and put into textbooks.

THEORY DIMS SPONTANEITY

I am not opposed to theory, but I feel that subjects like photography in particular, should begin by doing and not being clouded by a 'theory'; a more spontaneous outburst is what I look for first. Then we can apply theory to that outburst. Often, I feel that theory dims spontaneity and joyful outbursts.

ON ‘DE-SCHOOLING’

L

ON WHY HE STARTED TEACHING ike most things in my life, I did not 'seek' teaching. Someone from KC College called me out of the blue and that began a decade of enjoyment. I did not know how to 'teach' or did not have a method; in fact, I did not know that I could teach. All that I did know was that I did not want to teach as I had been 'taught', i.e. in a formal teacher/student template.

A TEACHER HE REMEMBERS

I was taught by a lady called Daphne Correa in school who was marvellous, she obviously loved what she did and she loved students, her geography lessons, the principles of which stay with me today, tectonic movement and why Newfoundland is a famous fishing ground were so

compelling and beautifully told that one sat bolt upright in her class and was transported to new lands and climates. It all became fascinating and understandable and logical and lyrical. And you never felt castigated or little for not knowing; she was a true educator in the best of the tradition.

ON HIS ‘UNIQUE’ TEACHING METHODS

You know the great thing about being unique is that you don’t think that you are being unique, you do what you think comes naturally, that others think it unique is all for the good, but I don’t think, when setting out to class, that I am going to be 'unique'. I do what I do. But I take it as a compliment. I feel I approach photography from a non-theoretical point of view, which

It is my belief, and there is enough and more empirical data to show, that school and 'schooling' drums out creativity. "We all are born artists, staying an artist as we grow is the issue," said Pablo Picasso. I can’t agree more. In fact the word 'school' actually means conformity, at least in the Indian context, all designed with good intentions to serve the jobs produced out of the industrial revolution, cookiecutter education where people are 'replaceable' since they are all made to do the job in a 'standardised' way. I find that anathema to the idea of original thought and freedom of expression. So I work on the premise of 'de-schooling' after having found a book, many years ago, on the footpath that seemed to talk to my soul called De-schooling of Society by Ivan Illich and another by him called Celebration

of Awareness.

I do not look for technical excellence, in fact I am very surprised when I see it. In a short semester from November to March with a Christmas vacation and enough college festivals in the way, what would you rather use me for, a technical guide, that is easily performed by YouTube or an instigator into the world of ideas and philosophy? So yes, a few complain, but there will always be someone who complains if God almighty would descend from the heavens. So I roll on regardless. However, that does not mean I am

36 Youth Incorporated ║ SEPTEMBER 2012

impervious to questions about technique, the class of 60 can be a damn good resource and then if all else fails, I'm there.

NO SUCH THING AS HEALTHY COMPETITION

I hate the word competition, which is built into our survival or so we are told by Darwin. My feeling is if it’s ingrained and there in our genes and happens willy nilly, then why buy more of it if it can be avoided. I have a 'theory' that competition necessarily breeds a rival and I don’t particularly believe in the 'healthy rival', that’s an oxymoron. Is it possible to engender original thought, most certainly, but the overriding experience in a student’s life is competition and marks and grades. So it’s a strategy they employ to gain more marks but has nothing to do with original thought. Fear is the biggest operative: what if I fail, what if I'm wrong? That’s the biggest hurdle for any original thinker. The word 'loser' acted out with an 'L' on your forehead is the most disgusting sign I see played out in a borrowed American fashion, again indicating a copy cat, herd mentality. I abhor it.

THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF THE PROFESSION

The most gratifying aspect I think for any teacher is to see the scales fall from students eyes when they start to believe that 'I can do that', or that’s a fine new way of seeing or thinking, that’s the moment every teacher lives for. It may not happen in the time span that you'd want it to, but it happens in what the aboriginals call

Dream Time, a time when it has to happen. It’s the biggest thrill for any educator. The most demanding part is to flow against the tide, to believe in oneself and to move on when everything else around you is against the grain, the system of marks, of grades, of attendance and those things that the administration thinks important.

TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF TEACHING IN INDIA

Firstly, if teachers are paid more, then there is a greater chance that you will attract the right people into the profession. You can’t expect mere dedication alone, and this is applicable in any sphere. Especially in education, teachers should be paid very well, to start with. The selection process of faculty is critical to the ideology of an institution. You have to hire people who are like minded and will take the brunt of free and original expression even when it hurts. And it’s imperative to start at the beginning, at kindergarten, and move all the way to secondary and tertiary processes.

THE CHANGE IN STUDENTS OVER THE YEARS

I see less hunger and more affluence, which are directly related. Affluence could be a great resource or a terrible burden; it’s up to the creative teacher to use those resources. But affluence also breeds apathy, and this is very hard to overcome. It can drag the whole class down. I see less hunger, that’s very disappointing, but I also see things are cyclical and have faith in time itself.

DON’T CALL ME ‘SIR’

Demanding respect is the sure fire way of not getting it, my 'theory' borne out of experience is that if you want power, then give it away. It comes back in more than full measure. You don’t demand respect, you earn it. Then whether students call you 'sir' or 'David' has nothing to do with it, it’s the tone in which it is said, that makes the difference. Also, in India, so much hierarchy is built into our sociology. I think it comes in the way. I prefer a more egalitarian approach and think the American universities, in this regard, have got it right. I like to adopt that approach.

AN INSPIRING STUDENT

One of my students, Sachin from KC, did not have a camera and borrowed a digicam from a friend. But when the end results did not turn out to his satisfaction twice over, he went to YouTube, made a pin hole camera with a match box, electrical tape and kitchen foil, and made truly astounding photos that gave him a standing ovation that he did not expect. It was a very special moment. I have many such stories.

THE GREATEST LESSON HE’S LEARNT

To have few expectations and listening can be more active and creative than speaking.

A PIECE OF ADVICE HE GIVES HIS STUDENTS

I show them the Steve Jobs convocation address at Stanford. It summarises exactly what I feel and is said far better than I would attempt, 'Stay hungry, stay foolish'. yi SEPTEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 37

JAYANTI GHOSE

Jayanti Ghose is a career and education consultant. She holds an honours degree in economics and a degree in education. Her research in career counselling and guidance spans more than 25 years. She pioneered the concept of career counselling and career writing in the print media. She is actively involved in personal and group counselling.

SOFTWARE ENGINEERING Q: Are there any courses that have been announced relating to cyber forensics? What educational background would help me to take up such a course? Amol Rath ANSWER ANSWER

P G Diploma in digital and cyber forensic & related law by the Government of Maharashtra, Institute of Forensic Science (http://www.ifscmumbai.in/) open to graduates in science, psychology, law, engineering, IT, computer sciences, medical sciences. Institute of Forensic Science, Gujarat Forensic Sciences University (www.gfsu.edu.in) offers postgraduation in digital forensics open to BSc hysics/computer science/ IT graduates or BTech. It would be advisable to consider a formal full-time programme of a recognised university for a long-term career in cyber forensics. MSc/MTech information security would be the most comprehensive course options.

You could lay the ground work for your career in IT by taking up the job offer from campus. Instead of going all out to prepare for the UPSC Civil Services Examination after BTech without a job, do it in a gradual manner while working. This would be possible if you were to aim for an employer/ organisation offering a job with regular work hours, rather than what one which requires you to work on projects at different locations. During the first year, lay the foundation for the UPSC Civil Services Aptitude Test, and figure out your choice of optional subjects for the main exam and also start with studying for general studies. Thereafter, scale up your preparations in the general areas while getting together a bibliography and study material for the optional subjects. Opt for postal coaching or evening/ weekly coaching for the exam once you have decided when you would actually appear.

Two year MBA/PGDM advertising and communications management or equivalent, or MBA marketing, or MA/P G Diploma in advertising & marketing would be the typical pathways to a career in media planning. However, it would be a good push to get an entry-level position after your graduation, explore the work environment, and nature of work responsibilities and assess whether the same suits your interests and abilities before you decide whether that would be your final goal. Of course, the above postgraduate qualifications are also flexible enough to offer you potential to seek alternative career avenues in the field of advertising and media. Around two years or more of work experience after your BMM and before your MBA /PGDM would be advisable anyway.

IAS Q: I am pursuing my BTech IT. I would like to join the IAS. However, I’d need 2-3 years of thorough study to succeed in cracking the UPSC Civil Services Exam to get into the IAS. Therefore, I may not be able to take up the job offer from campus. In case I am unable to make it to the IAS, and have also not taken up the IT job from campus, I would be in a very tough spot. What should I do? Suyash

Business analytics makes extensive use of data, statistical and quantitative analysis, explanatory and predictive modeling and fact-based management to drive decision making. Business analytics is being used to do everything from solving complex business problems to increasing the efficiencies in hospitals and simulating sporting contests. As per statistics released by the US Bureau of Labour Statistics, by 2020 there will be a 24 per cent increase in demand for business analyst professionals. An MS in Business Analytics is a relatively new course offering, with several universities having launched their courses in the last 1-2 years (eg NYU Stern, Northwestern, University of Michigan – Dearborn College of Business). Other prominent universities are Texas A&M, University of Texas at Austin – McCombs Business School.MS in business analytics programs vary from 10 months to 15 months in duration. Universities admit students from a variety of educational backgrounds, though students are required to have a strong mathematical/quantitative aptitude. While not all programs require a GRE /GMAT score, if you have taken them and have a decent score (GMAT – above 600; GRE – above 150) then do submit it to aid your application. International students, in addition, need to take the TOEFL/IELTS. Unlike an MBA, there is no strict requirement for work experience. For admission to the fall term in 2013, the application process opens in September 2012, with the first round of application deadlines falling in OctoberNovember 2012.

DREAMING OF UCLA Q: I am extremely keen to get into UCLA in the US because I have heard so much about it (and my aunt lives there). My class 9 marks were not so great (65 per cent), but I really worked hard to improve my performance in the 10th (85 per cent). If I continue to do this through class 11 and 12, will I have a good chance of getting into UCLA? Also, what subjects do you recommend I take if I want to study genetics? I am totally lost at this point. I just need to know if I have a chance of getting in and what I can do to improve my chances. Sumit Narang The University of California’s General Catalogue states the three principles on which entrance requirements are based: * The best guarantee of success is high quality of scholarship (academic performance) in previous work. * Study of certain specific subjects will give the student both a good preparation for studying at the university and reasonable freedom of choice of a major field of study. With respect to your situation, that subject would be biology, since you are interested in genetics. * Undergraduate applicants must possess what is considered a 'satisfactory' SAT score as determined by the university. If you are going to be a geneticist, it is advisable to opt for the following subjects in class 11 and class 12: biology, physics, chemistry as well as mathematics. Although many people believe that the study of bio-sciences don’t require any mathematical ability, unfortunately, this is just a misconception. Another important thing you and other students should remember, especially at this stage of your education, is that most people change their career choices several times before they finally opt for specialisation at the PG level. Therefore, it is wise to keep an open mind and not limit your options prematurely.

F

rom a lazy bun to the ‘Rihanna bob’, people are turning more and more to hairstylists for the latest looks and trends. In short, they are taking it way too seriously! Little wonder that a career like hairstyling has really moved forward. Hairstylists are often called to do a variety of events like weddings, commercials, photo shoots and movies. As a hairstylist, it’s imperative one is always on top of one's work and personality. Being charismatic, passionate and joyous comes through in your work and in your personality. Deepti Aggarwal, hairstylist at Psalms 23 Salon, speaks about qualities in a stylist that can help further one's career. “You need to be able to talk and do an effective consultation. Getting a client to trust you and building a relationship with them is very important. How you present yourself is also important. Being confident, hygienic, looking fashionable and being aware of what you’re doing also helps both the client and you. Hair plays an important role in a person's life and can change their entire personality. My job is not boring, it’s all about creativity and thinking outside the box. SKILLS/ QUALITIES

To be a well-known, polished, and lucrative hair stylist, the most important quality one needs to possess a passion for cutting hair. In addition, hairstyling requires attention to detail, precision and patience. Being creative and having a strong insight into fashion also can prove beneficial. Your success as a hairstylist is also dpendent on your social skills. As a hairstylist, you need to be able to interact efficiently with your client and ensure him/her that they’re in good hands. After this assurance is established, a hairstylist must also have a keen eye for visualizing changes in appearance. It is important to know what styles will suit a person's face and even personality. After all, a disgruntled client can be disastrous as people are protective of their precious tresses. Therefore, it is essential to please a client’s needs and preferences and have the ability to suggest positive styles and cuts that would suit the client appropriately.

QUALIFICATIONS

In order to become a hairstylist, you can pursue a degree in hairstyling right after you complete your class 12. However, if you wish to keep your options open, you can pursue a bachelor’s degree in a subject that interests you and then undertake a hairstyling course. Many established hair salons also run academies where they offer a variety of hairstyling courses. These courses range from four weeks to one year in duration, depending on the level of specialisation you wish to achieve.

JOB PROSPECTS

As a hairstylist, there are a variety of job opportunities one can take advantage of. There is the most obvious one, which is working for a salon. Usually people enter this profession as an apprentice or trainee and work under a senior stylist to learn more about the job. After that, you can move on to becoming a trained stylist, and then a senior

stylist earning the highest salary. The roles in a salon progress as your experience and training does. If you have good customer satisfaction and are confident in handling clients, you can take the receptionist route and have the task of setting up appointments, handling any hair care products sold in the salon and answering phone calls generally about the salon. These skills can help you progress into a management position. Job opportunities are also available to motivated people with a sales background in hair care products. These people can sell and market hair care products for a salon and work with hair care companies affiliated with salons. There are also other situations where there is a demand for hairstylists in events such as weddings, fashion photo shoots and films. These often require strenuous hours of styling but tend to be more exhilarating and also tend to help build up your clientele. Some hairstylists also manage to juggle their salon duties with other freelance projects.

REMUNERATION

1 lakh per month. As with most jobs, you must work your way up the corporate ladder to gain more experience and money.

CHALLENGES

The challenges faced as a hair stylist vary. One being that a hair stylist requires extensive knowledge on different kind of hair and their needs, plus the treatments that are suited best for this type of hair, which inevitably can take years to master and memorize a difficulty also faced is customer satisfaction. Most girls are extremely conscious of their hair and can be extremely over protective of it (even guys), pleasing your client and listening to their vision is also a quality needed. Sometimes the look envisioned by the client is not what you have in mind, but learning to integrate both visions into one cohesive one really marks the character and patience of a stylist. In a world where looks and beauty matter, hairstyling is definately an up and coming career option. yi

As a trainee in this industry you can earn about `10,000, which is decent for someone working their way up. After you acquire more experience as a trained stylist, you can earn about `30,000-40,000 per month. As a senior stylist you can earn up to `

Scissorhands Deepti Aggarwal, stylist at Psalms 23 Salon gives us a closer look at the intricate and exciting world of hairstyling

What motivated you to become a hair stylist? My interest spawned at a young age. My sister, Ity, got into the hair salon business and started her salon, which gave me a break and my job. She is my motivation. What is your educational qualification, and how has it helped in your career? After I finished class 12, I realized I wanted to do something creative. I was never interested in studies but had that determination to do what I wanted. What do you love most about your job? What perks do you enjoy in this profession? I enjoy the switch from salon to shots of a movie the most; it helps build up my clientele and I meet new and interesting people. I love to see the smile on my clients' face and being able to give them what they are looking for in terms of their hair. Tell us about your experience working with Sonam Kapoor and working on the sets of Aisha and Mausam. Sonam Kapoor is an amazing person to work with, has a great personality and is genuine. The first film I styled her was Aisha. I was actually hired to take care of the supporting cast (Abhay Deol, etc) but was introduced to Sonam while assisting Namrata Soni who was doing Sonam’s hair on and off. My first time working with Sonam alone was in Mausam when I styled her hair. One of the best things about her is that she loves to experiment with different hairstyles. Not all people and celebrities are okay with that. Is there any project you've worked on that you like best? My favourite project was working on the movie Aisha. It was a short and sweet production. The crew was youthful and large. It was an amazing experience. Aisha had proper schedules and good shots. We all worked long hours to get the job done. I became good friends with the crew and future clients, such as the director, and it was an honour to have a scene shot in the salon. How much can one expect to earn as a hairstylist (from a starting position to senior)? As a warder you start off with about ` 5000 and then it all depends on the salon. Salons short of stylists quickly train a warder into a junior stylist. It’s based on an evaluation of your personality and work on the floor. Your pay comes from commissions, experience and how you build your clientele.

What challenges do you face in this profession? Mausam was more of a challenge than Aisha because there were no planned ideas or conceps for the hairstyling, so it was more up to me, which I found a little challenging, but thankfully everything worked out in the end. In the salon, it is challenging when a client makes a comment after a result, or when trying to follow a client’s imagination when what they are saying might not be a good look for them. It can be difficult to convince them and bring them back to reality. Do you have advice for students looking to enter this field? Enter purely on interest as it is a lot of hard work. Everyone starts as a warder, regardless of their wealth or family background. You can’t throw your weight around and you have to be creative and conceptualize looks for your clients and advise them well. Do you see hairstyling becoming a popular career option in this country? I think it’s already a popular occupation. In any country, irregardless of a crisis or major event, hairstyling is still prominent. People never forget to do their hair. yi

_CAREER WATCH

A job in the merchant navy allows you to earn big bucks and travel the world Veena Gomes-Patwardhan tells you more

U

nlike the navy, which is involved in defence activities, the merchant navy comprises civilians engaged in transporting cargo and passengers in commercial ships. The merchant navy fleet includes different types of vessels, such as passenger liners, cargo ships, bulk carriers for cargo like food grains and ores, refrigerator ships for transporting perishable food items, tankers for carrying oil and other petroleum products and other special types of ships. Today, over 90 per cent of cargo is transported across the world through ships. In a globalised world, the merchant navy forms a crucial component of international trade and contributes significantly to

the economy of a country. And as commercial activities expand globally, the demand for ships and trained manpower to manage them will also keep increasing. The merchant navy needs deck

officers for the navigation department, marine engineers and radio officers for the engineering department and staff for managing kitchen, medical, laundry, and other services for the service department. Shipping companies employ trained people for such positions on a contract basis, usually for a duration of four to nine months. Nowadays, women too are joining the merchant navy though in small numbers, with most of them opting to work as radio officers and ship doctors. Employment opportunities in India are offered by government shipping companies like the Shipping Corporation of India as well as by privately run Indian and international shipping companies, such as Great

LIFE AT SEA

First the pros. Merchant navy jobs are certainly not dull, nine-to-five, desk jobs. As Capt S. V. Subhedar, director, Indian National Shipowners’ Association (INSA) puts it; a career in shipping is "fulfilling, challenging, and non-boring". Gladwyn Gomes, formerly a chief engineer at Chellaram Shipping, and now technical manager at Strait Shipping, New Zealand, says, "There's the opportunity to learn new stuff and apply it directly on the job. And besides good food and good accommodation (may differ from ship to ship), there's enough free time to read and study other subjects or pursue your passions and hobbies." Capt Norbert Rebello, in command of tankers for Teekay, says, "I mostly read or write during my free time." In fact, he's already a published author, his second book 'Pirates! Beware!' about the present Somalian piracy situation is due for release. Other benefits include financial independence when you're barely in your twenties. There is a good opportunity for senior officers to take their wives along on voyages. Availability of duty-free imported liquor and other foreign goods on board and earning well without having to pay income tax are the other prime benefits. Seafarers also enjoy long leave periods between voyages to make up for the long time spent at sea away from their families.

On the down side, though you get to travel the world, port stays have been reduced to just a few hours due to modern loading and unloading equipment, unlike in the past when ships used to be in port for days, even weeks. Raunek Kantharia, founder of Marine Insight (a leading maritime website in Asia), asserts, "Just because mariners wear smart uniforms that doesn't mean their life is glamorous. There's a lot of hard work involved." Capt Maxim Saldanha, HR manager, Dockendale Ship Management (India) says, "Money shouldn't be the sole criterion for joining the merchant navy. You need a liking for life at sea and the aptitude to face the challenges involved." Gomes adds, "You may not always like the people you're sailing with; medical emergencies can be a problem as also piracy in certain parts of the world; and senior officers can be personally liable for any environmental damage."

COURSES & TRAINING

You need a BSc in nautical science to become a deck officer, or one in Marine Engineering to become a

marine engineer. Some of the training institutes offering these degree courses are: Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), Mumbai and Kolkata; Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Nautical Sciences, Mumbai; T S Chanakya, Mumbai; Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune; Seacom Marine College, Kolkata and National Maritime Academy, Chennai, run by the Indian Maritime University (IMU). To be selected, you need to appear for an entrance exam, followed by a medical fitness test for sea service (eyesight 6/6 and no colour blindness) and counselling. To enroll for the MERI or T S Chanakya courses, you need to clear the IIT-JEE entrance exam. Shipping companies often pick up degree students for jobs through campus recruitment.Alternatively, you could join as a direct entry cadet by having a shipping company sponsor your training. On being selected, you will have to clear the IMU-CET exam, complete a short pre-sea training course and then undergo onboard training for around 18 months. You will have to pay for the pre-sea training, but during the onboard training you'll receive a stipend of around `15000 per month. This route to the merchant navy usually involves a contractual obligation to work for the recruiting company for a certain number of years. The minimum requirement for a nautical science or marine engineering course is 10+2 or an equivalent examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics. For joining the service department, you need a relevant educational qualification.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Once you become a seafarer, you need to upgrade your skills at regular intervals through special courses offered by maritime institutes and clear the government conducted exams to become eligible for promotions. The career graph for those in the navigation division is deck cadet > third officer > second officer > chief officer > captain, while that for engineers would be fifth engineer > fourth engineer > third engineer > second engineer > chief engineer. Entry level salaries are around `20,000 a month, whereas a Captain or chief engineer earns `4 lakhs or more each month. Those working for foreign companies have the added advantage of earning in dollars. Since the last few years, the job market is slack and freshers often need to find employment through agents. But there is a danger of being fleeced by fraudulent ones. Kantharia says, "Students sometimes have to struggle to find jobs because there's a surge of trained candidates, but the number of shipping companies has remained the same. However, those completing degree courses from reputed colleges mostly get selected from the campus itself." Capt Saldanha says employment prospects are somewhat on the lower side because "many shipping companies have to deal with their own existing backlog of candidates". Capt Subhedar expresses a more optimistic outlook. He says, "Prospects for young entrants are still

bight provided they choose the correct mode of shore and onboard training."

SOUND ADVICE

Capt Rebello recommends applying to ownership companies for a job as management companies only act as agents and some could just wash their hands off in an unfortunate situation. Capt Subhedar's advice is short and sweet: "Work hard, play hard." Meaning sweat it out when on duty, then enjoy the rewards. Gomes suggests planning for the future by exploiting the internet to do the ground work or for studying while you're sailing, and quitting while you're still young, after reaching the highest position. He adds, "The merchant navy offers excellent opportunities for developing people management skills while on the job. So you could consider taking up a management position in a shore job later on." To sum up, if you plan well, there'll be sea of options even after your sailing days are over. yi

_IN CONVERSATION

Moulding the Future

Dr PC Thomas, founder of Good Shepherd International School, shares his vision of providing a holistic education What is the vision behind Good Shepherd International School? GSIS is a unique concept, where all students and staff go through an intense residential and holistic educational experience. The school provides a conducive and happy learning environment with its welldesigned, balanced academic and co-curricular programme. Our staff-student ratio is 1:4 with an added emphasis on one to one attention. The strength of each class would not be more than twenty. Attention is given to every student’s well-being physically, mentally, socially and spiritually. The school is privileged to have counsellors to work on the holistic development of each child through regular personal and group counselling sessions.

basketball, swimming, hockey, cricket, table-tennis, rifle-shooting, a nine-hole golf course and the list goes on. There is the mountaineering programme conducted by trained personnel from the Nehru Mountaineering Institute. There are facilities for the development of performing arts like music, dance and drama. GSIS is a centre for the Trinity College of London music examinations as well as a centre for the IELTS and SAT examinations. Do you believe in the benefits of an international education? Of course it widens one’s outlook and perception and helps us create global minded students. This has helped us introduce the Cambridge curriculum at GSIS from 1994 and the International Baccalaureate diploma programme from 2002.

How is the school’s motto ‘Truth, Trust, Triumph’ integrated into your teaching methods? A great deal of importance is given to human and social values and respect for one another. There is an evident trusting relationship between staff and students. The faculty is exposed to the best teaching practices through workshops and professional development sessions. Triumph comes for us when we see our students transformed into responsible learned citizens.

What motivated you to start the Good Shepherd Finishing School? The girl child in India is often seen to be neglected and having a lesser status than boys. We can proudly say that Good Shepherd Finishing School, Ooty, has pioneered the effort to empower young girls in India through a multifaceted programme to make sure that ladies are able to make an equal or better stand in society and also in their personal lives.

What other amenities does the school offer? We have catered to most sports and games including lawn tennis,

What are your views on the quality of education in India? With schools mushrooming all around in India, apparently to provide basic

education to children, we face a great challenge of maintaining quality in terms of infrastructure and also faculty. India is blessed with an immense young population and if they are not guided well, our nation can be seriously misled. Lastly, do you have any words of advice for young students? Today’s young generation are in the midst of an ever-changing world, with its vast share of distractions and entertainment. They are buffeted by a flood of information, which they need to analyse and screen for veracity and usefulness in their responsible goals. Here at GSIS we help our young seekers of knowledge to stay focussed on their academic, social and personal goals. The key is to remain focused on your goals without yielding and without giving up. yi

MUDRA INSTITUTE OF COMMUNICATIONS The students of MICA take you on a tour of their campus and share the experience of being a MICAN

J

ust when you start to think that you might have missed a signboard somewhere and driven down the wrong way, out of nowhere appears a familiar sight of red bricks stacked carefully, one upon the other. Educational institutions in Ahmedabad have traditionally preferred the bare red masonry. But you cannot confuse this edifice with any of the others. The first step you take, entering through the comely, inviting gates of this esteemed institution, will tell you that B-school wise, you have ventured into the unknown. The campus is cradled in the Shela village on the outskirts of the city, seemingly untouched by its fast -paced lifestyle. But don’t be fooled by the serene surroundings that greet you; a fire burns inside.

CAMPUS

Ahmedabad

The academic block and the KEIC (Knowledge Exchange and Information Centre)– the two pillars on which the MICAN academic programmes rest are the first things that come into the periphery of your vision as you begin your journey. As you familiarize yourself with the hustle and bustle of the campus, you might foray into different hostel blocks, each of which has its own unique story – a story that is recorded word for word on the walls by its past inhabitants. You’ll find enough evidence of the subculture that all these students belong to – one that allows them to be free, in mind, body and soul. There are no barriers, nothing to keep them from coming together, thinking and expressing.

HANGOUTS

Student hangouts are plenty within the campus, but the in-house favourite is the Chhota canteen, which takes

care of all gastronomic cravings, even at the ungodliest of hours. It’s not just an eating joint but a respite of sorts for the students from their usual swamped schedules. This is a place where they can pick each other’s brains about the latest happenings on campus freely, while coming up with brilliant ideas at the same time.

PROGRAMMES OFFERED

Although the flagship programme offered at MICA is PGDM-C (Post Graduate Diploma in Management – Communications), it also offers some post graduate certificate programmes, including the acclaimed CCC (Crafting Creative Communications) programme as well as a few online programmes. In addition, there is a 3-year doctoral programme in management communications. The

faculty, needless to say, is of the highest standard and understands the complex and dynamic world of marketing and can thus impart the necessary and best skills to the students.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES In addition to the curriculum, students organise and participate in various co-curricular activities all through the year. The annual sports meet, ‘SAMAR’, held in the month of March, is a glowing example of the latitude given to the physical fitness of students, their busy schedules notwithstanding. The literary committee organizes its annual fest, called ‘Maktub’, in February. It also publishes its own magazine called ‘Black Coffee’. MICA boasts of an independently held TEDx event every

year. However, their crown jewel is their biggest marketing-management festival in the country called ‘MICANVAS’, which sees students from all the prominent B-schools in in India fighting for glory. The event is of such proportions that almost every student contributes to its success in some way or the other. Everyone is a champion here. Outstanding is mundane here.

ONCE A MICAN, ALWAYS A MICAN

Another fascinating aspect of what the MICA tradition and what it is known

WHAT MAKES THE MICAN EXPERIENCE UNIQUE • The course: When it comes to marketing communications, there are few who do it better. • T he auditorium: This is a one of a kind concept, which has been, and always will be, MICA’s pride. • T he students: They come from diverse backgrounds and together form a magical formula that actually clicks. • The freedom: Students are treated as the adults they should be and there is almost no moral policing. Their spirits run free. • T he faculty: No academic institution is complete without its teachers, and MICA has the perfect mix of them; astute readers of the market. for is the wide, global network of alumni it has cultivated over the years in several industries; a network that is dedicated to contribute to the improvement of its alma mater. It has bourgeoned in a relatively short span of existence, but the phrase “Once a MICAN, always a MICAN” is one that every student who graduates from here keeps very close to heart. Even after living in a world mazed with deadlines, they still find time to help their fellow mates whenever they need it. In turn, MICA showers them all the love and respect they deserve whenever they come back to where they belong. yi SEPTEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 49

_STUDENT SPEAK

Mihir Shah shares the unforgettable experience of visiting NASA’s Kennedy’s Space Centre as a participant of the lunabotics competition

of a lifetime

N

ASA, perhaps the word is enough to show how big an organisation it is. Many engineers might be fascinated by working there or for that matter competing in any competition pioneered by them. I am one of them. I am Mihir Shah, a student pursuing my MBA(Tech) from NMIMS University. I belong to the telecommunication engineering branch and am presently in the 4th year of my course. NASA organises a couple of competitions in their premises each year that might help them for their future research and expeditions. One The team with their amongst them is the 'NASA’s Annual participation trophy Lunabotics Mining Competition'. This was the third year for the competition and my team and I participated in this endeavour. The competition is mainly based on lunar robotics. The main aim of the competition was to make an efficient robot, which could work wirelessly and collect as much of regoith, ie sand particle available on the moon in the minimum possible time. The Lunabotics is a global competition and many international teams participate. This year there were approximately 70 teams who registered for the competition, out of which 14 were registered from India. However only 58 teams were physically present out of which 8 represented India. It all started in the month of November when we started with our planning on the path to make our project a success. Our team was named 'Chandrakanth' and under guidance of our professor Mr. Sawankumar Naik, five of us started our hard work on the project. We had divided the work amongst us in such a way that Arjun Kaushik was the team leader, Kushal Raja was the mechanical in charge, Mrudul Neralla and myself were concentrating on both coding, networking and mechanical side as well, and Neha Jain was responsible 50 Youth Incorporated ║ SEPTEMBER 2012

The invention- Chandrakanth

for all documentation, so that we could work as a team and come up with a unique design for this lunabot, which we started calling 'Chandrakanth'. We had to make a design taking into account various restrictions set by NASA beforehand such as the bot should not exceed dimensions of 1.5mts*0.75mts*0.75mts and the weight of complete mechanical and technical part should remain under 80 kgs. Due to the unavailability of certain resources and materials we faced many delays. We had to change our design a lot of times during the making process. I still remember the date when we were under so much pressure of completing the Robot that we were in the workshop from 4 in the evening to almost 4:30 early morning without going home and we had to go for our visa interviews the very next day at 7 am. It was the 'yes we can do it' and 'we want to do it' that helped us a lot. During February- April 2012 we had internships and our time table was such that we would go home for just to eatdinner and get ready. We used to rush home at 7 in the evening from our internships, eat and leave for a complete night of coding and networking. We used to be awake till 4 am and again leave for home at 6 am. This was practically the timetable during February to April 2012, when we had most of our work. These were the memories of all the hard work we did to convert our dream to reality. It was a collective effort that made it possible to compete amongst very tough participants at NASA, be it Indian teams or previous year’s winners. Our competition started on 21st May 2012 and ended by 26th May 2012. It was the week of a lifetime. When we entered the premises of "NASA’s

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex", the first thing I could see was the arena where we were to participate. I recollect the song being played in the campus was 'Set fire to the rain' and that in my mind was 'Aashayein mile dil ke'. The amount of preparation we did back home was to be successfully delivered here. During the competition preparation in the NASA campus, we went under more pressure to make our college proud. There were a few mistakes that we made, but all before the final competition. We were up against one of the toughest competitors and an international team of 'NYU- Polytechnic' of New York, where we couldn’t win, but we were in fact amongst the top 15 teams who actually participated there. Our design was highly appreciated by one of the judges, especially Mr Philip Metzger. Under the name of Lunabotics, there were several competitions in which we had to compete apart from on-site mining ,which was the main focus of the event. We had to do a slide show presentation on the key aspects of the bot and what were the difficulties and demonstrate our design. Our design being simple and using the mechanism of a digger it was said to be well suited and basic, but one of the judges highly appreciated our presentation skills made by Mrudul Neralla, Arjun Kaushik and me. At the award ceremony on the last day, we were almost in tears due to two reasons; one being that our beautiful and unforgettable journey had come to a sweet end and another because we realised that we had lost two competitions with a very narrow margin. Presentation was where we missed third position, by 2 points and in social outreach, where we had to inculcate science and technology in underprivileged students (which we did at Sneha Sadan Orphanage), we just missed the bronze by half a point. But at the end of the day, 8 months of hard work, 2 days of travel and 4 flights changed to reach our destination, it was completely worth. We are all satisfied with the amount of knowledge we gained, not only technically but also on the managerial front. I sincerely thank my college, Flywings Aviation and Acme Telepower who financed us for this wonderful project. I would also like to thank all my team mates for their coordination as well as my faculty guide for his valuable help and guidance. yi SEPTEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 51

_PRODIGY

Bringing jobs to s Rishabh Gupta, CEO of letsintern.com, a meeting-point for students and organisations, shares his experiences as a young entrepreneur YI: What motivated you to quit your job and become an entrepreneur? I have always had the desire to have my own organization. Add to this the herd mentality, poor innovation and boss pleasing that is prevalent in big organizations. Thus, after working for two years with three different media houses, I realized it was time to create something of my own. My partners and I wanted to make a difference and make our dreams count; that's why we decided to quit our jobs and start a business of our own.

YI: What challenges did you face starting a company at the age of 24? When we started out, we had no money, no great backgrounds and no idea on how a business is done. We couldn't afford anything, so we begged, pleaded and persuaded people to do stuff for us for token money or free. We learnt everything step by step. I heard more ‘No's’ from clients and investors than I did from girls in school/college. In all, it was a very exciting but tough time. We learnt to enjoy the rejections and kept moving forward. Movement is all that you can show when you are that young.

YI: Why did you decide on ‘Let’s Intern’ as a business idea? Well, there are about 12 million students and about 2 million organizations, with no dedicated platform for these two parties to interact. This proves that opportunity in this field is obvious, huge and needs attention. We are glad we decided to cater to the needs of students because India's growth story is that of youth. Through letsintern.com, we are able to be in the centre of it all.

YI: How has winning Economic Times ‘Power of Ideas’ impacted ‘Let’s Intern’? Winning the Economic Times 'Power of Ideas' gave us a platform, money, recognition, investor interest and everything else. IIM-Ahmedabad gives an average student immense opportunities in the job world. 'Power of Ideas' gave us the same thing in the business world. Through this, we had the opportunity to talk to the best investors, mentors and entrepreneurs. The entire process was a good learning experience.

52 Youth Incorporated ║ SEPTEMBER 2012

52 Prodigy.indd 52

24-08-2012 14:43:02

YI: What role has social media played in the success of your product? Social media is the only marketing tool that we had for the first nine months. Social media is free, viral and present everywhere. Our entire target group, which is college students, is always on it. Therefore, it was a perfect match. We have 22,000 + followers on Facebook and Twitter, all of whom are genuine, obtainedthrough word of mouth and without spending a dime. YI: Why should students opt for ‘ let’s intern’ over any other platform? Which other platform boasts of internships from stellar start-ups plus SMEs (small and medium enterprises) plus blue chips like Times Group, HCL, Viacom, MTV, Channel V, Outlook, fashion designers, movie houses, advertising houses, etc? The variety and quality provided by letsintern.com is unmatchable. YI: Do you remember your first internship experience? Yes, it was with the Mudra Group and I do remember it. I was 20 years old and I worked really hard for those

o students 2 months. In fact, my bosses still remember me and are always willing to employ me. It was a fun time and the only thing I did was be desperate to prove myself, do more and learn more. YI: What should young students keep in mind while they’re looking for internships? There are three things students should keep in mind: a) Take an opportunity rather than sitting at home. Nobody sat at home and became anything, doing the smallest job is better than doing nothing. Working for free is better than not working as a student. b) Be desperate to learn, to work across functions, and gather as much knowledge. Don’t try to be specialists in internships - be generalists. c) Try to do varied internships to understand what you are good at, what you like, etc. Experiment more. YI: Any advice for budding entrepreneurs? Just believe in your gut instinct and start. Always think of three things always with respect to your business: What value am I adding to the consumer? What is my cash situation? How am I different from my competition? yi

RISHAB’S TIPS TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR COLLEGE LIFE START YOUNG: Footballers, musicians, and others

make a lot of money in their 20's as they have been practicing their art since they were 5 or 7. So after 1520 years of hard work, they make millions and it takes anyone that much time. Thus, spend time from day 1 to further your dream, career interest and be desperate for opportunities and learning.

GOOD COMPANY: An organization is defined by its people. Similarly you alone can't succeed and you need people around you to challenge you, compete with, work along with and develop new ideas. The sharper the brains around you or better the people around you - the chances are you will also succeed. All leaders stress on surrounding oneself with the best talent around. LEARN TO TAKE STEP 1: Thinking how to make 1 billion dollars or be as famous as Richard Branson is daunting, scary almost. It keeps you lost in day dreams. Think of the first step he took - and take the first step - start a student magazine, start an internship, start working - thinking and moving forward. The rest of the journey to your billions will unfold. So take the first step and keep moving; don't keep sitting and thinking of a billion dollars and all that it can buy. PEOPLE MAKE MONEY, MONEY DOESN’T MAKE PEOPLE: No amount of money will make you a different

person. It can make you buy expensive clothes but cannot change your style. Similarly, don't chase money - all the money in the world will take you nowhere as a person you will be as insecure. Learn to be the person worthy of money - and you will earn more and will be on the top.

BE FRIENDS WITH GEEKS: The most popular kid isn't

the most successful. Be friends with everyone, you never know who could become tomorrow's CEO - people change a lot in 1 decade - look back at your last ten years. SEPTEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 53

THE RISE OF VIRAL VIDEOS It is human nature to share. Well, maybe not money or worldly possessions, but what makes us ‘social animals’ is our desire to connect with other people, which is reflected through our dependence on social networking sites. Thanks to these websites, you no longer need to share life events, juicy pieces of gossip or random information with one person at a time. Instead you can reach out to hundreds, or even thousands of people, in a matter of seconds. This has given birth to the viral video phenomenon. A viral video can be defined as a video that gains popularity through the process of internet sharing, using the help of video sharing and social networking websites. One of the first viral videos, which made the screen-savers of most PCs in the 1990s, was the ‘Dancing Baby’, which was a 3D rendition of a baby doing the cha-cha. Another early viral video phenomenon was motivational speaker Judson Laipply's 'History of Dance'. The video featured Laipply showcasing different popular dance moves, changing from one to the other in less than a minute!

VIRAL VIDEO MOVEMENTS While most videos go viral due to their entertainment value, here are some individuals who have managed to leverage personal and world movements using the power of video sharing.

KONY 2012

With more than 19 million views on YouTube and millions more on other video sharing sites, Kony 2012 is being called the ‘most viral video of all time’. This video was released in order to gain support for a year-long campaign against Joseph Kony, who gas waged war in central Africa for more than two decades. Joseph Kony is the head of ‘Lord’s Resistance Army’, and has commited several crimes, such as abducting young children. The boys are then trained for battle, while the girls are made sex slaves. The aim of the video, which is a thirty minute short-film created by Invisible Children, Inc. is to have Joseph Kony arrested by December 2012. UNITED BREAKS GUITARS

Canadian musician Dave Caroll suffered the loss of his precious guitar due to its poor handling by the staff of United Airlines. Dejected by the lack of help from the airline authorities, Dave took a step that can almost be called ‘Gandhian’ in nature. He recorded a song explaining the incident and posted it on YouTube. The result? After the video went viral, Dave received a personal apology from the managing director of customer solutions at United Airlines. Within four days of the video being posted, United Airlines suffered a financial setback as stock prices reduced by 10 percent costing the company a damage of almost $180 million! FREE HUGS CAMPAIG

This social movement, which involves hugging strangers in public places to spread the love, was started in 2004 by an Australian man named Juan Mann. A random hug from a stranger helped Mann cure his lonliness and despression and motivated him to start the Free Hugs Campaign. Though the movement was started in 2004, it gained international popularity only after the release of a music video by a band called Sick Puppies featuring the campaign. The video soon went viral, receiving millions of views, and today, the free hugs movement is carried out in different parts of the world. We’d like to give YouTube a big hug for this one. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=vr3x_RRJdd4

YI RECOMMENDS LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!

Rating: 18+ Although released in 2007, this video still hasn’t lost its humour appeal. To be fair, we must warn you to watch this at your own risk. An emotional and possibly mentally disturbed fan of Britney Spears pleads (or threatens? It's hard to tell with the variety of emotions displayed) the audience to leave Britney Spears alone. This video invokes much laughter. And fear. Watch this video on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHmvkRoEowc SEPTEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 57

VIRAL VIDEO STARS What viral videos have essentially done is created a direct platform for budding stars and reduced, if not eliminated, the need for middlemen. People no longer need to wait for hours outside a casting agent's office or enter a reality show to showcase a talent. YouTube can make you a star. Add to this the weighty advantage of social networking sites, and your talent (or lack of it) is out for judgement by a large audience.

JUSTIN BIEBER Before he divided the world into Bieber-haters and Bieber-lovers, he was the star of one such viral video rage. A self-taught musician, Bieber won a local singing competition with his version of Ne-Yo’s ‘So Sick’, at the age of 12. Beiber’s mother posted the videos of young Bieber’s performances, both at competiitons and at home, and the number of views began to multiply rapidly. Scooter Braun, a talent manager, stumbled upon one of Beiber’s videos on YouTube and was impressed with the young kid’s talent. He contacted Bieber, got him to record demos and meet other artists and personally became his manager. And the rest, for better of the worse, is history. Watch this video on: http://www. youtube.com/watch?v=eQOFRZ1wN Lwwatch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc

TED WILLIAMS This one is a real life rags to riches story. Ted Williams was a homeless man who gained employment after his video went viral. A videographer, Doral Chenoweth, from Ohio spotted Ted, who would stand next to a traffic signal with a handwritten advertisement of his voice, begging for donations. Doral was so impressed with Ted's talent that he recorded and posted a video of Ted titled ‘Ted Williams: A Homeless Man With a Golden Voice’. Once this video went viral, Ted was offered voiceover jobs and made many television appearances as well. He also went on to author two books titled A Golden Voice: How Faith, Hard Work, and Humility Brought Me From the Streets to Salvatio. Watch this video on: http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivF5JnnGo0&feature=player_ embedded

OK GO! This American band soon realised, if you want to be heard, you have to be watched and managed to break through the clutter of music videos with their song “Here it goes again”. The song features the four band members performing various dance steps and other gimmicks on four treadmills. What is fascinating about the video is the fact that it is a single shot video, which demands a great deal of co-ordination and mutiple retakes. This video soon became a video sensation and propelled the song into the Billboard Hot 100 list. Their list of acomplishments continued to grow as the band received a Grammy Award in 2007 and was included in Time Magazine’s list of ‘The 30 All-TIME Best Music Videos’. YI RECOMMENDS THE SILENT NATIONAL ANTHEM

Wheather you are patriotic or not, this video will probably move you to tears. Released on the occasion of India's 61st Independence Day, this video was created by the Mudra Group. The video showcases school children with hearing and speech disabilities performing to the sound of the National Anthem through sign language. This video went on to receive a prestigious silver award at Cannes Lions 2011. If you haven't watched this video, it's about time you did! VIRAL VIDEO SCARS While these videos can turn nobodys into somebodys, they can also make somebodys wish they were nobodys. Like the rest of us, celebrities also have moments when they wish noone was watching them. So while viral video audiences are appreciative of talent, they can also be ruthless in their criticism. Here are some people who have been exposed to the unfriendly side of viral video viewers.

REBECCA BLACK Though Rebecca Black’s music video ‘Friday’ became a viral sensation, the teenager and her musical abilities were subjected to much mockery. A popular US comedian actually lablelled 'Friday' as ‘the worst video ever made’. In fact, it received mainly negative comments and dislikes from YouTube users (87 percent!). Although Black was initially shocked by the quantity and intensity of hurtful comments, she said she was soon able to ignore them. A number of celebrities, such as Miley Cyrus and Chris Brown, later came to Black's defence. Even the impossibleto-please Simon said, "Whatever she's done has worked. right now. Nobody over the age of 18 should understand her or like her. So she should just do it her way.” Watch this video on: http://www. youtube.com/watch?v=kfVsfOSbJY0

MISS TEEN USA During the question answer session of Miss Teen USA 2007, Miss South Carolina was asked: “Why is it that many Americans can’t find USA on a map?” She replied saying “I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uhmmm, some people out there in our nation don't have maps and uh, I believe that our, I, education like such as, uh, South Africa, and uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uhhh, our education over here should help the US, uh, should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries....” The video soon went viral and an embarrassed Miss Carolina defended herself saying everyone makes mistakes. Blonde girls even more so? Watch this video on: http://www. youtube.com/watch?v=lj3iNxZ8Dw

JACKIE SHROFF Who would've though Jackie Shroff would ever be a hot topic of conversation? Surprisingly, this 'bindass' actor was recently in the news for his errr...innovative use of foul language. Ironically, these 'candid' out-takes were recorded while Shroff was filming a polio awareness video in 1988. Frustrated by his inability to deliver the required lines, Shroff resorts to using language that will put Roadies contestants to shame. What's amazing is Shroff's ability to transition from mellow and angelic during takes to his tapori best in matter of milliseconds. What did Jackie have to say about his recent rise to fame? "Arey, logon ko kaam dhanda nahin hai kya?" Yes, he can manage a sentence without abusing. Watch this video on: Actually, we' d rather you don't watch this video.

YI RECOMMENDS DIGGING IN THE DEEP

Tired of listening to Adele's popular song 'Rolling in the Deep'. While you might have heard multiple cover versions of the song, have you heard a dog's version of this chart-topping number. This strangesounding video features a dog taking on the role of Adele, complete with a broken heart, being dumped by his master. Perched on a stool, like Adele in her video, he barks his heart out, to deal with this emotional situation. This just proves that broken hearts aren't exculsive to humans. The one line

W

attempt at love!

hile on your way to the train station you check and recheck your documents for the meeting that may decide your future in the company. So while reciting your speech for the 6th time in your head, suddenly this girl catches your eye, she’s standing with this weird polka dot umbrella, her long hair flying in the wind. You are intrigued so you lean in closer since she’s talking to her friend. She see’s you looking at her, and before you can frame a sentence, she gives you the death stare and walks off in a huff. In such situations, you may find yourself wishing you had something witty and romantic to say so that she would beg you to go out with her. Well no such luck, but there is something that might just help you make a lasting first impression. That, my dear reader, is the power of a pick-up line. Much common a concept in metropolitans, every girl has heard a one liner and every guy has used the standard pickup lines. Some guys categorise themselves as helpless under the circumstances since they see this as an asset and are intent on conveying the best they have to offer, which is sometimes inadequate, but most of the time simply inappropriate. Then the other category of male species believe that they are way above the effort of conveying such petty and cheesy ideas to the opposite sex. It's just the effort of a smile and a simple ‘How you doin?’, Joe style, to leave an impression. Generally, its presumed only men stoop to the level of using one liners, but it’s the 21st century where pick-up lines are the new way to go and are frequently utilized by women as well. Of course, the quality of the pick-up line varies, as is the case in most incidents. A woman does not simply drop a line; she conveys her simple hints

Have you spotted the person of your dreams but don’t know how to approach him/her? Disha Seth guides you through the tricky world of pick-up lines by way of expression, smiles and plays with her hair, not anymore. The sight of a female whistler is not uncommon. However, society still manages to have a hold over us in some little form. One liners have repercussions because of which you will often find yourself amused by the women whistler rather than appalled by her. If you doubt this particular theory, then let me give you an example to stimulate your imagination. You are casually walking around your favourite bookstore, trying to pick the perfect Sunday read when a woman says, “Excuse me, could you point me toward the self-help section? I need some advice on how to approach a guy like you in a bookstore without seeming creepy.” And the reaction to it is absolutely dumbstruck. You end up turning around to make sure its not a prank or worse, a conversation with someone else, only to realize its your lucky day, that was definitely meant for you! Well, cheesy lines can get you a long way, so let's ponder over some of the classics to give you an estimated response you may receive. The positive and the negative! "Who needs liquor? Something tells me, I could just get drunk on your love." This pick-up line definitely gives you an insight into alcoholism versus love. If you seriously believe this will get you any luck, I assure you, you need to amend your ways and probably get a better perspective. I don’t see any women or men falling over

60

60 Relationships.indd 60

themselves just to be compared to vodka! Then again, there are the positive and naïve who may well believe this to be one of those awkwardly honest pick-up lines. Well, either they are too drunk to comprehend or just an admirer waiting for you to approach. “I’d offer to help you carry those bags, but I threw my back out saving an orphan from a runaway paddleboat. Little tyke didn’t even see it coming. Thank god I was there.” Umm, self praise much! This one will get you cracking. Little tyke might be a better option than this guy. The saviour of this one is definitely the funny side of this pick up-line. If she smiles or laughs, you might have a shot because for all you know, she’s thinking in her head, "Aww, how adorable, it’s his first time, he’s trying a pick up line." Very Johnny Bravo indeed! ‘If you were a martini you’d be straight up… sexy.’ Do you really believe you can get away with that? This one comes with a fear of being slapped or abused. Stir clear. There is absolutely no positive side to this one. It’s a nono altogether. Don’t use unless you want her father to chase you down your backyard with a gun in his hand. "Can I have your picture so I can show Santa what I want for Christmas?’" Buzzing in the holiday spirit, are we now? After this little dialogue all you are getting for Christmas is a shoe print across your face! Then again, maybe she appreciates your effort and actually does like the idea of being wrapped and kept under a Christmas tree. Well good luck, you now have a date for Christmas and New Year! Way to beat the holiday blues. "I didn’t believe in angels until I saw you." And that is probably the last time you are going to see her! Unless the girl belongs from the century where girls believed their prince charming would come riding on horse back, this is NOT going to work. Maybe an avid reader of 1900-English fiction might be interested in you since it’s probably one of the lines English gentlemen from The Ton used. Now you can happily read along and describe to her how exactly you came across that line. Considering you didn’t know what ‘the ton’ means, its going to be a difficult feat. "I am crazy after you baby" Not much of a pick-up line, maybe a direct assault. Inspired by Rockstar, the Bollywood flick. Well if Nargis

UP LINES • If beauty were time, you'd be eternity. • Sorry, but you owe me a drink. [Why?] Because when I looked at you, I dropped mine. • Be unique and different, say yes. • You shouldn't wear makeup. It's messing with perfection! • Excuse me, I think you have something in your eye. Oh wait, it's just a sparkle • I'm not trying to impress you or anything, but... I'm Batman! • Well, here I am. What were your other two wishes? • You are a 9 - you'd be a perfect 10 if you were with me. • Hi, I just wanted to give you the satisfaction of turning me down; go ahead say no. Fakri didn’t fall for it when Ranbir Kapoor was saying it, do you think you will have much luck? I don’t think so. If you bump into a Bollywood freak, this line will work wonders and you may receive responses such as ‘Tujhme Rab Dikhta hai’ that will match your pick-up line. Cheesy meets cheesy and lives happily ever after. These among many others are usually the pick-up lines every person often resorts to. Well pick up lines aren’t always supposed to be cheesy, they can be humorous, sarcastic or plain cute. Starting from the basic, "I think I know you from somewhere, oh yes you were in my dreams last night" to "I like what you are wearing, it would look even better on my bedroom floor" all are tried and tested and usually don’t cut it. Instead, originality could you score you more points and is a welcome breath of fresh air from the much used and abused pick-up lines. So use your personality to your advantage and find a suitable line to impress potntial girl (or guy!) of your dreams. yi 61

FOR THE COUCH POTATO: Plants have to be watered and given extreme attention, but the 'Lucky Bamboo' makes it easy for all the lazy individuals who have taken the effort of buying a plant to actually maintain it. It’s tolerant and can adapt very well to temperature changes.

3

FOR THE PERFECTIONIST: Need a plant to obsess over and cherish much like your wedding vows? 'Ficus Benjamin' is just like a demanding three-year-old. It needs constant watering and a caretaker who ensures the temperature variations do not have extreme effects on it.

5

FOR THE ARTIST: Creative, spaced out, careless and extremely talented describes most artists. The 'Anthuriam' plant is just the perfect match for an individual with such calibre. The ‘flamingo’ plant possesses the extra 'oomph' element. The purple flowers make the environment come alive, much like an artist’s personality. It requires minimum care, so you can jaunt of on your next adventure and follow your inspiration without a second thought.

6

FOR THE FITNESS FREAK: It’s hard to imagine a man watering plants and talking to his gym-buddies about the latest seeds he planted, but 'Juniper' will definitely change that mentality. This a plant for the tough ones; it portrays strength and athleticism and fills the room with testosterone. yi

INDI AN M MEDIA EDIA INDIAN M EDI

W

A number of recent events stand as evidence of our constant need for approval from foreign media. Nisarg Kamdar delves further into this national obsession

hile replication is considered to be the best form of flattery, merely plagiarizing without application of one’s mental prowess is plain cretinous. The syndrome seems to be fast overpowering a major section of the Indian media and consumers. While the foreign media industry has for ages wielded a disproportionate amount of

influence on our internal functioning, this recent ass worshipping borders on servility and obsequiousness.

WHO'S THE UNDERACHEIVER?

Take the recent Time magazine cover, which managed to raise a storm. Hours of television programming and oceans of ink were devoted to

A

analysing a cover labelling Manmohan Singh as an ‘Underachiever’. Senior ministers elevated it to a pedestal by issuing rebuttals, which is surprising when juxtaposed with their contemptuous dismissal of incisive and indicting reporting by national magazines. The juvenile tit-for-tat from the Outlook Magazine points to the importance awarded to insipid commentary as long as it originates

64 Youth Incorporated ║ SEPTEMBER 2012

from the Western Hemisphere. The one with Narendra Modi on the cover was interpreted as a stamp of approval and his supposed eligibility for the high post of India’s Prime Minister. What baffles me is this constant craving for approval from the foreign media at the expense of the public at large. Why do we require all our prime ministerial candidates to be vetted by those who at best have a passing interest in our country? Why does an op-ed in the New York Times send the government and the media into a tizzy, while informative and erudite commentary back home rarely rises beyond a passing mention? How difficult is it to grasp that the media of every country functions with the aim to promote the interests of the country rather than with the interests of India at heart?

THE ECONOMIC COMA

Unfortunately, it is not just the political class that seems to base its decisions on portrayal by foreign institutions. The Indian media too seems to have joined the bandwagon.Rather than choose to chart out an independent path based on enlightening commentary and protecting the interests of the proletariat, it seems to have lapsed into a coma, parroting western thought and economic policies adopted by the international media. The verbose breast beating which lines our dailies is cringe worthy. The absence of critical analysis and rational thinking is apodictic. Stories seem to be based primarily on commentary by the international media rather than a fact based observation on the travails of India. In the absence of indigenous and ingenious thought, India has been bulldozed into following half-baked

ideas, which have in turn fuelled this great disparity between the masses in the country. The media, along with the executive, the legislature and the judiciary are the four pillars on which democracy takes safe refuge. In many ways, it is the most essential ingredient of any democracy. Its malfunctioning can be catastrophic for the country. As a bastion of free thought and guarded scepticism, the inability to preserve free thinking has been manifested in a decaying and regressive society. Abhishek Karandhikar, second year engineering student offers an acerbic take, “With an economy down in the dumps, increasing distrust in our markets by foreign investor, and a collective feeling of not belonging to the 'developed world' and failing to compete with China, our media, which almost essentially is a political entity now, is clinging to the 15 minutes of fame we get for free.”

SOCIAL SECTOR

The majority of the country is aware of some of the diabolical and egregious social diseases that persist and perpetrate in India. It is more or less a defining theme of our Sunday newspaper spreads and that infected portion of our body which we have chosen to severe rather than cure. But with alarming regularity and tedious predictability, there is a chorus of outcry the moment a Guardian decides to take up the cudgels in the fight for social equality. Responses range from defensive retorts and inability to swallow the truth to sympathetic tweets and Facebook statuses. Rarely does either translate into ground level action. The trouble is why do equally erudite, if not more, reports armed with incisive statistics and illuminating facts in local dailies not arouse the same urge for change which a Guardian report my initiate? Should every fact be reinforced by the supposed purveyors of journalistic ethics for it to finally register?

'MEANINGFUL' CINEMA

Unsurprisingly, the entertainment industry and its offshoots have been caught up in the same rot. Rather than cater to the audience, serve up intelligent produce replete with takes on Indian idiosyncrasies and home grown ideas, they are designed to educate and entertain everyone but Indians. An award at the Cannes Film Festival is all what matters, not the content or lack of that. Somehow, in this age of claptrap nonsense, scheming PRs have managed to categorise anything which gets an award at an international film festival as ‘offbeat’ and ‘meaningful’ cinema, when there is far better regional and national programming, who choose to avoid climbing on to this gravy train .

Stories seem to be based primarily on commentary by the international media rather than a fact based observation on the travails of India The idea that anything endorsed by a chimp sitting in Paris is far better than local produce is defeating, degenerate and regressive. Unfortunately, most Indians fall for such silly marketing exercises, in turn failing to appreciate and enjoy far better quality entertainment just because they weren’t rubber stamped by the likes of the Wall Street Journal.

FREE THINKERS

A country is defined by its idiosyncrasies, its peculiarities and it’s tough process. Unless we break out of our feudal mind-set, I fear that we still remain imprisoned and our cognition still incarcerated, 65 years after gaining independence. yi SEPTEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 65

V

acations and holidays rejuvenate the soul, body and mind; making us vroom. They work better than any spa, and so obviously lighter wallets come in trend. We await these rejuvenation highs while searching ways to spend less on accommodation; and simultaneously have a ‘Rock On’ time. The cheap, yet fun and friendly, Couch Surfing is your best partner that keeps your wallet good and heavy as you meet new people.

Coming in limelight

The Couch Surfing project was introduced by the visionary Casey Fenton in 1999. His idea popped up

after finding an inexpensive flight from Boston to Iceland. Fenton randomly e-mailed 1,500 students from the University of Iceland asking if he could stay with them. He ultimately received more than 50 offers of accommodation. This idea needed execution. Casey Fenton along with other founders founded Couch Surfing International Inc. - a corporation based in San Francisco that offers its users lowbudget, fun hospitality exchange and social networking services. This corporation explains ‘Couch Surfing’ in a highly adventurous and joyous manner. It is a ‘practice’ of moving from one friend’s house to another (or some person’s home whom the traveller may just have met). Dozing in any space, any condition; on a floor, bean bag or couch are the other features. Couch Surfing provides travel guides and forums. Members organize activities such as camping trips, bar crawls, meetings, and

sporting events.

Independent learning beyond walls and practical learning

The whole concept focuses on epitomic exploration and creating significant connects with the new places and people- who eventually turn into the traveller’s best buddy.

Bizzare, novel, romantic meetings Rose met Charlie while he was hiking with his co-surfer. They got married two months later, and now have a kid-lily.That's a flowery story. Benformer banker joined the gothics after meeting his gothic host and now is happily gothic than ever before. Nishant Raheja recently returned from his couch surfing vacation and met a pregnant lady and her hubby. Nishant has come up with an entreprising idea to deliver 'dhabas'for newly-turned moms abroad seeing that they don't have helpers.

It’s not solely about visiting new places, but ‘living beyond boundaries of daily routines’

This appealing trend has set the largest travel community called by the main name ‘Couch Surfers’. To this fascinating community, the world is much smaller than people think. They value real-life experiences with strangers, who quickly turn into buddies. Learning occurs eternally. This travel community is the best example for sharing; they share homes, museum passes, bicycles and a bonappetite to satisfy your hunger pangs amidst all the adventure. They give you rides between cities and aid you with mountain hikes and dazzling jam sessions. There are millions of Couch Surfers in 92,000+ cities in 207 countries. The maximum numbers of enthusiastic couch surfers come from the US, Germany, France and

Spain. India too will soon be making a leading position in this new travel genre.

Enhancing security

After the unfortunate 2009 incident when a Chinese tourist was raped after being offered free bed for the night from man on 'couchsurfing' website, the security verifications have escalated. There are three methods designed to increase security and trust, which are all visible on member profiles Firstly, personal references are placed at the premier, where hosts and surfers have the option to leave after having used the service. Secondly, an optional credit card verification system, allowing members to "lock in" their name and mailing address by making a credit card payment and

Bridging discrimination

Couch Surfing has aided surpass the greedy concepts of noninteractions with some sidelined groups. Hunter Homeless Connect is a one-stop shop for people affected by homelessness, something that touches people of all ages, for any number of reasons. It’s sad to sideline them. Just imagine if someone isolated you and wouldn’t even give you a glance. Young Couch Surfers nowadays also surf with the Hunter’s Homeless groups. Such moves make our society better and friendlier place.

Want to register for Couch Surfing? As this whole concept focuses on cutting down on budgets,

This travel community is the best example for sharing- they share homes, museum passes, bicycles and a bon-appetite entering a code that CouchSurfing mails to an address of their choice. Thirdly, personal vouching system, whereby a member that had been vouched for three times — originally starting with the founders of the site — might in turn vouch for any number of other members he knew or had met through CouchSurfing, and trusts. These verification methods are all contested within the CouchSurfing community, especially the verification system, which is the only revenue stream of the corporation. Such moves have established trustworthiness and safety for all the existent and aspiring couch surfers.

the registration is free unlike some travel agents. You can register either as a host or a to-be-guest. Members can also give their pictures as well as accommodations they prefer. The more information the member provides about himself, the more trustworthy the person is seen as a guest or host. The duration and nature of homestays and terms set by the host are worked out in advance mutually between the guest and the host. This is necessary before he turns into ‘ghar jamai’ or like the guest in the movie ‘atithi tum kab jaoge’. Such innovative and viable travel tactics make travel a broader and better experience altogether. Bon voyage to all you travel-diehards. yi SEPTEMBER 2012 ║ Youth Incorporated 67

hen the French commoners were starving from want of bread, Marie Antoinette was attributed to having said, “Then let them have cake.” If in fact the people had actually had the opportunity to gorge on cake, maybe the French Revolution would have subsided. And maybe, rather than a revolution, the French would have experienced obesity instead, an issue which is equally grave for diet gurus worldwide. If Dr Atkins had lived in the 18th century, he might have begun his low-carb diet revolution right then. “Structured diets, like Atkins, give fab results at first,” shares Fayeza Hafizee, a self-confessed yo-yo dieter. “You lose

68 Health.indd 68

The world of dieting can be a dangerous place. Suchita Parekh helps you make the right decision by comparing the benefits of popular nutritional diets weight dramatically because you’re depriving your body. But it always piles back on. Diets don’t work unless it involves a lifestyle change. I am proof of that,” she laughs. Milind Desai, another struggling dieter, echoes these sentiments. “I did feel lighter and my trousers were looser,” he smiles ruefully, “but sadly, I haven’t been able to maintain the weight loss.” “I had tried a meal-replacement diet that involved drinking a powder shake in place of a meal,” adds former dieter Ayesha Kuruvilla. “All it did was make me miss my hot meals…and as it turned out, I began to like the taste of the shake so much, I ODed on it! That didn’t really help the diet much!” she guffaws. There is a wide spectrum of fad diets today, such as the Blood Type diet created by Dr Peter D’Adamo, which claims that certain blood types digest certain foods better. So if your blood type is O, you should be more carnivorous, type A should lean towards vegetarianism, while Bs and ABs can be more adventurous. There are a plethora of structured diets that tell you what to eat, how much to eat and when to eat. There are those that

aim at fasting and flushing, with the help of fruit or liquid detoxes. There are also specific diets designed to combat certain diseases such as diabetes or liver issues. Harsh detox diets like the Master Cleanser – only drinking a mixture of water with lemon juice, maple syrup and paprika – work for the short-term purposes of celebs like Beyonce, who thus shed the weight for her role in ‘Dreamgirls’, but they aren’t the most practical. In fact, the Atkins diet was revamped due to side-effects of heart diseases and high-cholesterol. Even though this 'new and improved' diet opens the door a bit wider to the Carb Fairy, and has followers like Jennifer Anniston, the cloud of controversy still abides. A majority of diets claim successful weight loss. These, believes Samir Pasad of Vegan Bites, are all missing the point of a healthy lifestyle. “Veganism,” he offers, “is not a diet plan. It’s a lifestyle. It involves a plant-based diet, so no animal products can be used.” So the tide is gradually turning, with the emphasis moving from rapid weight loss to healthier eating. “I think a healthy lifestyle translates to a nourished mind and body. And that automatically leads to maintained weight,” says vegan Maya Chaudhry, who has internalised veganism. “I live vegan,” she adds, explaining the reason she has stopped wearing animal products like leather. “I do it because I believe in the movement.” So, if you’re in search of a diet, shun the weight issue and look at the nutritional value instead. Here’s an overview of the hits and misses of some diets. Bon appetit! yi

A renowned dermatologist, she has made her mark in aesthetic dermatology in India for over 15 years. Post your queries in our Forums at www.youthincmag.com

I suffer from frequent blackheads on my nose. I have tried using blackhead removers, but they are not effective for too long. What can I do to help reduce them or prevent them from forming? Gayatri Jain, Mumbai First of all, what looks like blackhead could also be hair follicles so first get it examined by a dermatologist. And for blackheads- apply a retinol based cream in the night. To prevent blackheads- avoid any rubbing/friction/scrub on your nose. I used to have a lot of pimples on my face, but now they have reduced considerably. Despite that, my skin looks dull, can you suggest any natural or home remedies that can help make my face look clear and healthy? Priya Ahuja, New Delhi A dull skin could be due to low vitamin B12, d3, or low ferritin. So I would suggest that you get yourself tested for the above and take supplements if required. Home remedy would be some orange peel/papaya paste/milk with honey. Also for glow, try a vitamin C based serum from the market. My hair tends to get dry very easily in spite of washing it frequently. What can I do to make it look more voluminous? Ayesha Chaudhary, Kolkata Increasing your dietary protein and iron content would help with your dry and frizzy hair. Also use a good shampoo for your scalp and a volumnising conditioner for your hair. If you still feel dry, you can try argon oil for a soft and smooth finish. What is the best way to get rid of underarm hair, waxing, shaving or hair removal creams? Which option is better for my skin and will reduce hair growth? Cheryl Peters, Bangalore Best way is to go for laser hair removal which is completely safe and effective. Waxing is the other alternative if you don’t want to go for laser.

FOOD

The health of your skin and hair is an indicator of whether or not you're getting your fill of nutrients and you're healthy. When we're unwell or unhealthy, our hair becomes fragile, dry and brittle, and can even fall out; the skin dries out and becomes dull and fragile. Here are few essentials nutrients and foods to enable you to maintain glowing skin and shiny hair.

WATER: First and foremost important tip for the soft hydrated and glowing

skin is to drink enough water; which is at least 2 liters for an adult body.
Water is essential to healthy skin, for deep-down hydration and to get rid of waste products.

B-COMPLEX VITAMINS: These vitamins aid metabolic reactions to repair

and build collagen and elastin fibre. Green leafy vegetables and fruits are a good source of B-complex vitamins.

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS: Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids limit water loss

in skin cells, keeping it hydrated, soft and supple. Feed your body some Oils (olive oil, walnut oil, soya oil, rapeseed oil and peanut oil), oily fish (sardines, herring and tuna), nuts (almonds), seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, sesame, flax seeds).

VITAMIN C: It protects the skin from UV damage, is essential to collagen

production and helps scars heal better. Fresh fruit and vegetables, especially citrus fruit (lemon, orange and grapefruit), kiwi are few good sources.

VITAMIN A:
Vitamin A is the most important skin vitamin for supple, radiant skin and also protects against UV damage. Liver, eggs are a good source for Vitamin A, and brightly-coloured fruit and vegetables (mango, melon, pepper, carrot etc) for Provitamin A, which the body converts into Vitamin A.

VITAMIN E:
Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant with an unrivalled ability to

repair sun damage. It traps ageing free radicals and acts alongside Vitamin A and Vitamin C to protect cell membranes, which are the main target of those nasty free radicals. Daily dose of some nuts (walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds), whole grains, cereals and vegetable/plant oils can help you replenish your daily requirement of Vitamin E.

SELENIUM: It's particularly effective at fighting the effects of UV rays, and also aids the elimination of toxins such as tobacco and alcohol through urine. Meat, fish, seafood and eggs are good source of selenium.

ZINC:
Zinc is a good antioxidant, regulates sebum production and aids cell healing. Feed your body some shellfish, fish, whole grains and cereals for body’s daily dose of Zinc. If you have sensitive skin or a condition called as Rosacea, cut down on strong coffee, alcohol, chocolate, certain spices (pepper, ginger, curry powder, paprika and mustard). More than a great wardrobe or a skilled hand with make-up, healthy glowing skin is the key to turning heads and healthy diet is surely a key to it.

_GAME REVIEW

Rating:  Born about nine years ago, ‘Trauma’ is still the vital word. Max has never let go of this. Forging ahead would mean overlooking the past. Instead, he dives into an abyss of liquor and pills. Max Payne 3 guises differently. New York is replaced by hedonistic nightclubs of hot São Paulo, where Max works. Initially raucous, it eventually falls into place as it characterizes the gist of the game. Dubious characters, a conspiracy and deceit are all there! If you’re not a fan of genre fiction, you might find the plot a bit flimsy. It’s gnarled and bitter with calloused cynicism. You're never sure if Payne's searching for release, struggling to save another man's wife or on a lingering suicide mission. PLATFORMS: Gameplay is always firmly tied to its predominant chronicle. Heavily MICROSOFT punctuated by cut scenes, it may prove too intrusive; some players might WINDOWS, feel that control is being taken away from them too soon or given back too late. PLAYSTATION Max Payne 3 is brazenly ferocious. There are a range of typical weapons in the game, but you can only carry two side-arms and one, two-handed weapon at any given time. And if you choose to dual- 3, XBOX 360 wield, you’re forced into dropping the larger, potentially more powerful weapon. Signature moves return and delight, simple mechanics, but once you’ve mastered combining them, the action and destruction you can orchestrate is breathtaking. What’s disappointing: Max has no new skills on hand. The multiplayer is the real surprise. Gameplay itself is relentless fun, giving players a sense of freedom absent from the single-player campaign. It's commendable that innovations in the multiplayer plot are added, sans reworking old intrigue. Strong point: A narrative that engrosses. Players cannot enjoy freedom to reconnoiter and often feel curtailed. So, one may not relive the nostalgia of Max Payne 1 & 2, yet, Max Payne afficionados can’t bypass it. Max Payne 3 holds sway in its accomplishment, permeates with purpose and thrills its enthusiast.

BARFI!

Starring: Ranbir Kapoor,

Priyanka Chopra, Ileana D'Cruz Ranbir Kapoor fans this is THE movie of the month for you. It is a breath of fresh air from the typically predictable, dupatta flying in in the air, songs playing at the first sight mumbo jumbo. Barfi! is a much awaited Anurag Kashyap movie and it has the makes of being another hit from the legend. The storyline movies revolves around three characters, Barfi (Ranbir), Jhilmil (Priyanka) and Shruti (Ileana). Barfi is the main character with hearing and speech difficulties but with a heart of gold. Shruti is the one that got away. Jhilmil is mentally challenged and also the love of his life. Catch the movie to watch this twisted love triangle take shape.

HEROINE Starring: Kareena Kapoor , Arjun

Rampal, Randeep Hooda

This glamorous film with a twist is based on the life and times of a superstar heroine from the dream factory we call 'Bollywood'. The film claims that it is a daring, shocking, glamorous, scandalous. It is a ‘behind the scenes’ account of the reality behind the world of glitz and glamour that film stars inhabit. Love, passion, confidence, drama, melodrama and tears sway all along. Kareena initially was hesitant to take up this project but later admitted to be looking forward to this new journey portrayed in the movie. Will this movie turn out be a glamorous hit? Watch it to find out.

NIKI AND THE DOVE – INSTINCT

This Swedish electro-pop band's latest musical offering is an album called 'Instinct', which took two years to produce. It proves to be time well-spent as the album is packed with plenty of surprises. The twelve songs can be described as mystical, imaginative, spooky, upbeat and sometimes a little weird. ‘Instinct’ is anything but monotonous. ‘The Gentle Roar’ and 'Fox' are stars of the album with their hypnotic appeal. ‘DJ ease my mind’ is another rich, powerful track, perfect for a gloomy day. Some songs in the album are strong reminders music of the music of 'Florence and the Machine' and 'La Roux'; but that can never be a bad thing. Despite minor similarities, Niki and the Dove have managed to create a unique sound of their own. If the recent monotony in popular music has you craving for something new, grab this album and enjoy these innovative sounds. - Vatsala Chhibber

FLO RIDA- WILD ONES The energetic and bold voice of Flo Rida is back with ‘Wild Ones’. This album of his does embed a fusion of energy and solace within you. Hearing the fast paced yet smooth 'Whistle' assures you what boldly rhyming actually is. A novel mix of smooth mood transitions coupled with strong beats makes one hit ‘replay’ a zillion times. Be ready to be whistling too as the catchy whistles blow in the song. 'Good feeling' and 'Sweet Spot' will turn the words ‘depressed’ or ‘blues’ in your dictionary redundant. The swift tunes are a catch. ‘Thinking of you’ does make you ponder about all your romantic relationships and bumpy experiences. It wouldn’t be best if you let this go. 'Run' is the best pal to jog with. Boldness peaks, thankfully sans the Indian censorship panel. This number will make you run after all that you love and you’re going to freely hum ‘I wanna run to you, I wanna, I wanna’. Let your strings loose, turn bold and soak yourself in ‘Wild Ones’. - Jasmine Chabria

QUICK FIRE INTERVIEW WITH SHARATH KOMARRAJU After having two novels rejected by publishers, author Sharath Komarraju struck a deal with his debut novel, Murder in Amaravati, which is now in stores. Murder in Amaravati - an unpardonable thriller brings to life welldelineated characters, those that one can find in every village. Over all these characters lurks the ghost of Padmavati, the beautiful young woman whose body is found in the sanctum of the Kali Temple. This book is a classic thriller where every character has an alibi, and everyone is a suspect till proved innocent. Sharath Komarraju, who is only 26 years old, spent most of his childhood and early youth in Warangal, Andhra Pradesh. When he was sixteen, he moved to New Zealand and returned to India after 3 years. He started writing seriously when he was twenty-two. Until then he had strictly been a reader. Why should one read your book this weekend? People who have read my book so far have had largely positive things to say about it. They have said that the writing is easy to read without being juvenile; they have said the characters come out well; and they have said the plot is well-woven. So good writing, good characters and good plot are the reasons - with the caveat that it is entirely possible that you might not share those opinions; in which case do feel free to write to me and vent your feelings. I empathise with the horrors of reading a bad book, even if it is mine.

books

What prompted you to start writing this book? I was fresh out of university and looking for a hobby. Writing was the only thing I could start straight away because almost every other hobby required either costly equipment or people sharing your interests. I had a laptop with MS Word on it. I thought I had enough to start writing. So I did. If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? I already have many mentors. Isaac Asimov, Agatha Christie, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Ray Bradbury, Stephen King - all of these writers have been mentoring me for years (albeit without their knowledge). All the writers I admire are by default my mentors. What are your future projects? I have three more books under contract with Westland Books. Two of them are murder mysteries and one is a horror and should come out, at different times, over the next year and a half. Writing-wise, I am in the middle of a novel. What is your advice to aspiring writers? Be disciplined. Respect your craft and fellow craftsmen. Strive to improve. Read the entire interview on www.youthincmag.com -Babita Balan

THE BEST NEW FOOD SPOTS IN T O W N ////////

TASTE OF DARKNESS, HYDERABAD

This divine experience is one that will remain in your hearts forever. When one enters they pay their money, they are led by a visually impaired guide into a pitch dark restaurant where not even a hint of light is shimmered. There is a surprise menu and the food is pre-decided. A full course meal is prepared and that is when the guessing game begins. In this reversal of roles, it’s the visually impaired that hold ‘sight’ and us that are dumbfounded and immersed into a whirlwind of emotions. Fumbling with your forks and spoons you learn to rely on other senses and this helps provide a powerful ‘insight’ on what visually impaired people have learnt to live with. The ambience and darkness envelops you into a warm embrace. For a unique dining experience, this is the place to go! Level 5, Inorbit Mall, Madhapur, Hyderabad. -Alisha Sheth

Safe from the hustle and bustle of the city is a quaint, charming restaurant. With its bright yellow signboard, Yellow Tree Café in Bandra is a welcoming sight. If you are confused looking at their extensive menu, we suggest you try one of their pastas or baked dishes. For vegetarians, we recommend the 'spinach and mushroom lasagne', which is reason enough to make you a frequent visitor. If rich, creamy dishes have you worrying about your waist (though it's worth the weight), they offer a variety of salads for you to choose from; you also have the option of custom-making your salad. For those who love their meat, the Cajun chicken starter is a good option to begin your meal with, but the stake is a necessity. Don't limit yourself to the caffeine at this café . The menu offers some fresh and innovative cocktails, so we suggest you experiment with the drinks. If you manage to squeeze in a dessert, (keeping the size of your appetite and wallet in mind), we suggest you direct your energies towards the Crème brûlée. Perfect for a cosy date or intimate gathering of friends, the Yellow Tree Café in Bandra guarantees a delightful dining experience! THINGS THAT MAKE YOU WISH YOU'D LISTENED TO YOUR TEACHERS light hearted look at the things we should have learnt in school and college

You are acutely conscious about your shoes, your clothes, how YOUR FIRST neat you are. You feel like a DAY OF WORK deer in the headlights whenever anyone asks you a question, and realize that you know nothing. Every bunked class comes back to haunt you. Luckily it's just for a week. WHEN YOU'RE DOING YOUR TAXES: Many 10th standard maths syllabi have an introduction to Income Tax. Of course, at that time, a salary was something grown-ups got. Fast forward to when you're actually earning, and wrestling with deductions is hell. WHEN A CHILD ASKS YOU A QUESTION: To a child, anyone older is infinitely wise. At least, till they make a mistake. So, you try to seem as knowledgeable as possible so as not to disappoint the child, but you weren't listening in class, were you?

WHEN YOU'RE USAIN BOLT: and you only manage a 9.69 in the 2008 Olympics because your shoelace was untied. WHEN YOU LOOK AT YOUR FACEBOOK WALL: and everyone in your friends' list seems to be the world expert on the God Particle. Then you realize they're faking it, and think of ways to outfake them.

WHEN YOU TRAVEL IN EUROPE: and realize geography is real WHEN YOU TALK IN A THEATER: Start and are hit with please-die-now glances from everyone, you wish you'd listened to the 'finger on your lips' warning WHEN YOU'RE WATCHING THE LATEST medical drama: and can't understand anything owing to your biology periods being spent sleeping
