One man’s “magic” is another man’s engineering -Robert A. Heinlein Engineering is the cornerstone of human society. Ever since the invention of the wheel, everything has been uphill in terms of technology, and engineers have been in the forefront of this action. Today, from producing meat substitutes in labs by tissue engineering and generating fuel from algae and other plant organisms to 3D printing, engineers are in one way or another responsible for being the driving force of technology. It is no wonder that a qualified engineer is treated with respect and admiration. We are at the peak of progress and innovation and have thus decided to focus on 9 exciting avenues of engineering this month. We have featured some upcoming branches of engineering. In addition, we have spoken to professionals working in those fields to gain an insight into their work life. Maybe the day we will be living in a disease free world with unlimited food and water through renewable energy is not far. In the process of becoming a qualified engineer, a student has to go through ‘four stages of hell’ for the four-year course. Many consider this to be one of the toughest educational programmes in the world, but there are positives to be found, in addition to the valuable lessons learnt during the course. Although engineers have a tough time studying, it’s not an easy task for the rest of us either. But you can make studying a more enjoyable experience by hooking up with a study buddy. Speaking of friends and hooking up, I know how difficult it is to tell one of your close friends that you really like them and want to be more than friends. It’s one of those tricky moments all of us face at some point in our lives. This is why we have given you a step-by-step guide to turn your best friend into your boy/girlfriend. However, if you are more likely to be seen around more than just one special someone, we tell you how to throw a party of a lifetime with some awesome themes. Unleash the party animal in you!

Celebrating Digital Marketing
Clix 2013
PROMOTION
with
The key purpose behind Clix was to provide top business school students (most promising members of the huge Indian analytical talent pool) an exposure to the real world nuances of digital marketing discipline as practiced in an advanced market like the United States. Because of Clix 2013 over 300 business school students got an opportunity to apply concepts in marketing strategy on real world digital marketing problems. Moreover, the incredible experience gained by the finalists in presenting to senior level global executives from Fortune 500 companies like Lenovo and Google, will prove invaluable to them as they join the workforce.
- Udayan Bose, Founder and CEO of NetElixir
India’s first ever live digital marketing case study contest concluded earlier this year. Here is an overview on the event THE EVENT
NetElixir’s Clix 2013 took place earlier this year. The contest was a rampant success with over 75 registered teams participating from the most reputed B-schools in the country, namely The Indian School of Business (ISB), ICFAI Business School (IBS), Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM), Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) and Institute of Management Technology (IMT).
Clix 2013 can be celebrated for not only being the first live digital marketing case study contest among B-schools, but also the first time ever that crowd-sourced ideas and solutions at the B-school level are implemented in real projects. It also provided the participating students exposure to global level digital marketing strategies so as to facilitate the growth of intelligent and up-to-date individuals.
THE COMPETITION
The final round of the competition comprised a 30-minute presentation by each team on the case analysis followed by a 10-minute Q&A session. They were judged on the basis of their creativity, their ability to analyse real business data and derive insights to recommend a strategic digital media plan for one of the world’s top personal computer companies,
Lenovo. The judges’ panel comprised established individuals from their own fields including Ajit Sivadasan, Global Ecommerce Business Head, Lenovo. com; Arijit Sarker, Head of India Operations, Google; and Udayan Bose, Founder & CEO of NetElixir.
THE WINNERS
At the end of Clix 2013, one of the teams from Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) was awarded the first place while the runners up were from the contingent of The Indian School of Business (ISB). Malhar, the popular annual inter-collegiate cultural festival of St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, took place in mid-August. As has been the case over several years, there was a large attendance of college students who were participating in the competitive events, attending the workshops and supporting their fellow collegians. This year the festival had a host of events and activities ranging from the competitive to the informative. Events like Arabesque, Last Band Standing, Back to the Streets and Two For The Show encouraged students to put their best foot forward in performances. Other events like Forever De Moda and Humour Has It provided a good stimulus for creativity. The workshops conducted during Malhar 2013 also had immense participation from the students. The topics discussed in the workshops ranged from dream interpretation to ventriloquism. There was also a chocolate, tea, coffee and cheese tasting workshop, a mocktail making workshop and the all-day Craft Bazaar for pottery, paper marbling, mosaic and more. With all the events, workshops and activities plus the impressive list of judges attending the festival, it was no surprise that Malhar 2013 was a tremendous success with attendance figures of over 75,000 people. Writing the speech (but of course) Practising it Delivering it
WRITING
Writing a speech is different from writing an essay or article. A speech typically has short, simple and more focused sentences that are written with the aim of conveying a particular idea or set of related ideas. Here’s how you can start writing your speech: Know the end before the beginning. What are you conveying to the audience? What do you want them to remember and take away? That should be the driving force of the speech. Research the subject well. Holes in your speech will be noticed, especially if there is a Q&A session afterwards. Write a rough outline. Start with the general and then get specific. Keep the text simple. Don’t go overboard with too many technicalities unless necessary. Use humour but not too much; jokes can dilute the seriousness of a topic. Know your audience. This roughly relates to the above point. If you are talking to beginners, keep your speech simple and basic. If speaking to experts, you can get more technical. Be aware of the time limit. 2000 words takes roughly 10 minutes to deliver. Write accordingly. Read the speech out loud. Edit or cut parts that don’t sound good when said aloud, especially if you can make do without them.
PRACTISING
This is where you need to focus the most. The more you practise, the less you will mess up when you finally deliver your speech.
DELIVERING Read your notes a few times before it’s your turn to speak.
Do some deep breathing exercises.
See the box alongisde for tips. Make eye contact. There are three kinds of eye contact you should make while talking – a sweeping gaze at the entire audience, eye contact with one particular person, and a gaze at a fixed point in a distance. Think positive. Imagine the audience applauding you after your speech to feel motivated. After you’re done, write your experience on a sheet of paper or in a journal, along with what you liked about your speech and what you could improve upon. The next time you need to speak, read this and be encouraged and better prepared. yi
BANISHING ANXIETY FREDDIE PEÑA, FLICKR
JONNY GOLDSTEIN, FLICKR
There are three parts to speaking in public:
Write notes in little note cards. Identify the important points, along with the instances in your speech where you transition from one thought to another, and jot them down on small cards. Highlight the transition points; at this point in your speech you can pause, look up and make eye contact with the audience. Practise in front of a mirror. Notice your posture. Don’t be too still and stiff, but don’t be too relaxed and walk around a lot either. Find a balance. Practise using hand gestures for effect and emphasis. Record yourself rehearsing. When you play it back you’ll know where you need to improve. Watch it like a viewer and treat the video like it’s on YouTube, and make note of this – how long does it hold your attention and why? Deliver the speech to random objects – a vase, a photo frame, the neighbourhood cat, etc. Don’t deliver in monotone. Inflect your speech. Apply emphasis when necessary and experiment with the volume of your voice. Always time your speech. Call your friends and deliver your speech to them. They are your practice audience.
BREATHING EXERCISES WILL CALM YOU, AND HELP CLEAR YOUR CHEST AND THROAT SO THAT YOUR VOICE DOESN’T BETRAY YOU WHILE YOU SPEAK. Stand straight and pull your shoulders back. Put your hands on your stomach. Breathe deeply through your nose. Feel your diaphragm distend, but hold your shoulders down. Hold your breath and count to four. Exhale slowly through your mouth. Feel your diaphragm collapse. Repeat five times. Then breathe in deeply through your nose. When exhaling, sound out a vowel – ‘aaaah’ for A; ‘eeeee’ for E; ‘ayyyee’ for I; ‘ohhhhhh’ for O; and ‘uuuuuu’ (as in ‘you’) for U. Repeat for each vowel. • If direct eye contact makes you nervous, look at objects close to the person, or their body parts, and then close in on their eyes. For example, start from the hair, then forehead, eyebrows, then eyes. Or chair leg, legs, stomach, hands, neck, mouth, then eyes. • Remember, nobody knows what you’re going to say; you’re the master of your speech. If you make a mistake or skip a line or even a paragraph, who’s going to know? SEPTEMBER 2013 Youth Incorporated 19

YOUTH INC CATCHES UP WITH VIJAY NAIR, FOUNDER OF MUSIC MANAGEMENT FIRM OML, TO TALK ABOUT THE INDEPENDENT MUSIC SCENE IN INDIA AND HIS ENDEAVOURS TO POPULARISE IT
How does a college student in a country that prizes academic qualifications decide to drop out and manage bands? I had worked with Gigpad before [early 2000s], which was an online portal for musicians, so I had an idea of what was going on. There was a band called ASS. They had asked me if I liked to manage them and in three months I started managing them. I just figured that this is something that I want to do and if I really wanted to do it well, I needed to do it full-time. At that point I just wanted to do that for a year, so my plan was I was going to restrict college for a year and then go back to it, which never ended up happening. I thought my folks would be resistant but they were pretty cool about it. They said, if that’s what I wanted to do… as long as I finish my degree at some point of time, which eventually didn’t happen, but in the next couple of years they saw that I was doing it pretty seriously and it was turning into something, so they never really complained about it. In the early days, what kind of challenges did the independent music scene throw at you? There was a lot. I think the basic thing was that not many people were happy to speak to managers. They were used to [speaking to] artists directly, so they didn’t really want to speak to a third person. At that point of time you didn’t have big festivals or big clubs. I think the basic infrastructure problems have always been around. The biggest difference was you’d have very few

8/26/2013 5:58:09 PM
Since commercial music in India has for a long time been dominated by Bollywood music, how difficult was it for independent music to gain more acceptance? I don’t think it was any different from now. Bollywood music is as relevant now as it was back then. I don’t think we were ever competing with Bollywood. It was about building up the independent scene. The majority of people we cater to right now are people who would watch Bollywood movies and Bollywood songs, but would also come to NH7 Weekender. Back then, all we had to do was get the scene organised – [getting] more managers, getting gigs organised, getting people to pay [for] these bands, getting good music out in a proper way. And the Internet was really changing things around back then, so you use that in a way to kind of make it all direct rather than having people in between. It was just about getting organised. How did OML come about? I think it was a year, six months after I had started managing bands, I thought I needed a name. Initially the plan was me and Vishal [Dadlani] from Pentagram, we were planning to start a label. We decided to call the label Only Much Louder – that’s how it happened – but when I knew I wanted to do something for a long period of time, the name came up. I believe there’s an interesting story behind that name, Only Much Louder. Not so much, actually. We were looking for a new name for Pentagram because they were going to play in the States, and there was already a band called Pentagram there. So we were flipping through a magazine and I saw a speaker ad which saw ‘Now available only much louder’ and that seemed like a good name; I liked it
PRARTHNA SINGH
bands that would play their own music. Most of them would do covers. I think that was the big challenge.
One-on-one with Vijay Nair • Favourite band/artist to have managed: ASS because it was the first band I managed and it got me into the entire thing. Swarathma has a special place because they’re probably the hardest working band I’ve worked with ever. • Music in India in the next 5 years will be… I have no idea for the next 5 months! • This year’s NH7 Weekender is going to be… The best experience so far. We just announced that we’re going to do just 9000 tickets which changes everything drastically because we’re focusing on rewarding the fans who have been with us since year one. • One artist you want to bring to India: I’m superstitious. I’ll never say which artist I want to bring to India. • One Indian artist you want to take abroad: Dualist Inquiry is someone I really want to take abroad. • When you’re not working, you are… possibly just chilling at home, absolutely not getting out.
and it defined what I did back then, which was rock music, so Only Much Louder made sense. Did you have a Plan B in case OML didn’t work out? I’ve never had a Plan B now. Plan Bs just don’t work. Just keep doing what you’re doing; it takes time and a lot of patience and it’s about how to make it work, so no point of having a Plan B. Today OML has a music festivals wing, TV production arm, an online music and subculture magazine, and an online music store. Is there more expansion to this empire in the offing? It’s a pretty small empire. I don’t think you can call it an empire yet. I still cater to about a million people in the whole country so that’s hardly any kind of market share. We don’t really plan expansions. We just do what makes sense. When we wanted to get an artist on television, a production house made sense. When we wanted stages to play, running our own festival made sense. Similarly, now, taking the festival to multiple cities, most cities, I think that’s a priority. We’ve added Calcutta this year. When you look at the independent music scene today, do you feel proud that you had a big hand in making it what it is? I think I’ve just had a hand, I don’t know if it’s big or small. I think we’ve definitely helped in making it an organised business. It’s not that we’re doing it as a hobby. Investors and people from outside [are] saying, ‘You know, there’s an opportunity there,’ – I think that’s a good thing. I think that way we’ve played a pretty important role [in] establishing a business. The scale of it is so big that it’s become more interesting – lot more things to do, lot more cities to reach out to, and if you’re a really good artist, it takes about maybe a year and a half to two to reach out to the audience as opposed to ten. So that’s a pretty good place to be. yi SEPTEMBER 2013 Youth Incorporated 29

S p e y y A E THE INTERNET AND YOUR PRIVACY
In light of Edward Snowden’s recent revelations that the NSA is spying on everything you do online, Ansh Patel gives you some tips on how to protect your Internet privacy and activity
s if it were right out of the pages of George Orwell’s 1984, the recent leaks by whistleblower Edward Snowden on how US intelligence agency NSA might be spying on our online activities as minute as the content of our emails to tracking any Internet user’s activity through metadata – which means, in layman’s terms, your entire browsing activity to your location within the country is known to the US government. Even in India, a similar system called ICMS (Indian Central Monitoring System) was recently implemented. With the threat of government spying being very real, the Internet may no longer be the land of the free, but with the following measures you can certainly ensure that you preserve as much of your privacy as possible.

Turn on ‘cookie notices’ on your web browser
Cookies store details of your browsing, including username and password, and while they may seem innocuous, sites using cookies can sometimes track your activity – the pages you visit and the links you click. These ‘notices’ are enabled by most browsers like Netscape and Firefox which ensure that at the very least you are notified about how cookies are tracking.
Avoid sending sensitive info at workplaces
Workplaces and college computers are generally monitored and usually have limited encryption features, so using those machines to send out personal emails, credit card information or any private information isn’t the smartest thing to do.
Go for strong authentication methods
Enable two-step verification for emails. Most email services can associate your account with a device – the device you use most of the times to access your account (your laptop, mobile phone, tablet, etc). You can configure more than one device for your account. When someone signs in from a device and location not associated with your account, their access is blocked and you are immediately notified (via text message or an email to your alternative ID). This always keeps the real control of the account with the legitimate user, unless your phone or laptop itself gets stolen.
Check for encryption
For those who purchase frequently via online stores, we advise you to check for TLS-based encryption – signified by a green lock on the address bar – when entering your credit card details. Such encryption ensures that the sensitive data between your PC and the site’s server doesn’t get diverted by some other user (usually called a “Man in the Middle” attack).
Smoke bomb the spies!
Surveillance can come from any source – government, industry or an individual. The safest way to ensure the data that leaves your computer doesn’t fall into the wrong hands is to use encryption. Programmes like Pretty Good Privacy (PGP, available at www.pgpi.org) encode your data in a hard-to-crack code and send them via an anonymous encryption “tunnel”, making it impossible for hackers to trace the data back to its user.
Security starts from home The household Internet is usually run via a DSL/broadband line which uses limited security features, so be wary of leaving your PC on and connected to the Internet for long. Even if you leave the PC idle, it is susceptible to attacks from hackers on the lookout for low-security DSL computers and can gain access to your files and even ‘hijack’ your PC to act as a proxy and direct attacks elsewhere. Firewalls are your best friends – always keep them on and regularly update them. If you use Windows, the default firewall is quite decent.
Reveal only what you *have* to
Security starts from your own understanding of how the Internet works. When a discussion forum asks
“There’s really no such thing as security in the abstract. Security can only be defined in relation to something else. You’re secure from something or against something.” -Bruce Schneir, renowned cryptographer
you for your address or marital status while you are signing up, you need not give away that information. Look out for mandatory fields, generally marked by a red asterisk (*) and only fill in the details you absolutely have to. Giving out more information can only hurt you because anything you do on the Internet is permanent and it can always be traced back to you. So think before you act! As stated by Bruce Schneir, absolute security is an illusion in today’s world, but discretion and common sense can still preserve the last shreds of privacy. At the end of the day, no matter what you do, Big Brother is always watching you! yi

MY STORY
U
pasana Makati, a BMM graduate from Jai Hind College in Mumbai, was dissatisfied with her job as a public relations officer. On completing her graduation, Makati received a scholarship and left for Canada to study communication. On her return, she secured a job with a public relations company in Mumbai, but something didn’t feel right. “I always wanted to do something different. I always felt this vacuum when I worked at a PR agency. That's when I started thinking about different ideas that I could explore,” confesses Makati. This dissatisfaction eventually gave birth to White Print, India’s first magazine for the visually challenged. Makati tells us how:
How did you decide to start a lifestyle magazine for visually challenged people?
A VISIONARY
PURSUIT
Upasana Makati, founder of White Print, India’s first lifestyle magazine for the visually challenged, talks to Vatsala Chhibber about the story behind her revolutionary endeavour
One fine day, the idea came to me, that if I had to think of publications that I could read in my leisure time, there are plenty of options, based on different languages and interests. But when I thought about a visually impaired person, no name came to my mind. That’s when I started researching and asked someone to connect me to a few visually impaired people. When I started talking to them, I realised they don’t really have anything and they were waiting for something eagerly. I went to the National Association for the blind (NAB) and spoke to them. Initially, they were wary of the idea of a 24-year-old starting something like this. They had their apprehensions whether things were ever going to move forward. But I wasn’t discouraged by their response and I decided to move on.
What were the initial hurdles that you had to overcome while setting up the magazine?
It took me eight months to get a title because in the Indian system, there is always room for error. They rejected my title twice. In my third attempt I
32 Youth Incorporated SEPTEMBER 2013
32 My story.indd 32
8/26/2013 6:07:38 PM
got my title registered as White Print I had taken up random freelance jobs and I was writing for websites and editing entertainment magazines just to keep the ball rolling, so that money comes in and I can invest that into basic government activities. After I got the title registered, even NAB supported me. They said people would love it because they don’t have any options; you’re giving them a monthly magazine right at their doorstep, they would definitely want to take it.
How did you narrow down on the content of the magazine?
We thought of coming up with a lifestyle magazine. We decided to come up with a good mix of things such as food, fashion, travel, etc. We also included short stories because we wanted to add a literary element to the magazine as there not many novels available in Braille. We also have success story interviews because we realised that [the visually impaired] wanted to know more about their own community. We also do a lot of interviews in terms of music because music is something they love, and also film features. We tend to think that they might not know about films but one girl told me Katrina Kaif was her favourite actress as she loved her voice. Another girl told me that she accompanies her friend to the theatre to watch movies. We have these misconceptions in our minds that stop us from thinking that they lead as normal a life as any of us would.
One girl even goes shopping; she has a sort of a stick, like a pen. When you put that pen on a particular texture, it tells you what colour that is. We also have a readers’ section where we invite visually impaired people to send whatever they want. We give them a platform and that has been a very popular section.
Contributors to White Print include renowned journalist Barkha Dutt and stand-up comedian Sapan Verma
You’ve said that White Print is not a charity venture. How do you plan to make money from this enterprise?
who don’t know about it. It has been a challenge and we are asking people to cater to this community as well.
We have not promoted ourselves as a charity venture because when we were speaking to [visually challenged] people, they said [they were] done being sympathised with. They don’t want to be looked down upon as a community that cannot afford. We charge a very nominal amount (`30 per issue) and totally bank upon advertising revenue. For our first issue itself we got Raymond on board. A lot of people wonder how ads are going to be in Braille when advertising has always been about graphics and colours and text. Raymond was the first one to try it. It was a big challenge for me to change that perception [and convince people] to advertise for a very, very marginal community in the country. Raymond gave us a 5-page article about their spring-summer collection, an advertorial. We are in the process of speaking to a lot of big companies to convince them.
What is the reaction of advertisers when you approach them with the idea of Braille advertising?
A lot of people wonder how we are going to design an ad for them because they want their product packaging, etc in a print ad while in Braille you can make very simple squares. Some people would have a big question mark on their faces; somebody didn’t even know that Braille is a combination of six dots for the visually impaired to read. So these people are all at high posts and when they don’t know, you can’t blame small localised brands
What plans do you have for the future of White Print magazine?
My first aim is to ensure that the magazine reaches out to maximum number of people. There are 56 lakh people who are literate in Braille in our country and I want to see most of them subscribe to my magazine. Post that, we would love to come out with another magazine in the same space, maybe on some other topic of interest, but definitely something to do with Braille and the visually impaired for sure.
For those who are hesitant to leave behind a secure, financially lucrative career for a social endeavour, what advice would you offer?
I wouldn’t advice, but I would just say it is very important to follow your dream. It is such a cluttered atmosphere right now that you have to think out of the box, think differently. There are ways in which the two could be brought together. It’s about how you want the world to see what you do; it’s about how you want others to perceive you. Once that’s clear in your head, you have to be dedicated. I could have given up the second time I didn’t get my title or paid an advocate `20,000 to get it done. But we didn’t want to take that route, we wanted to do it ourselves. So that dedication is sometimes missing in a lot of people. If you are prepared to take the harder route, you can definitely make a mark for yourself and help people and society. yi SEPTEMBER 2013 Youth Incorporated 33

H
eralded for being the driving force of a country’s development, engineers are reputed for finding solutions to difficult problems, coming up with ideas that other people generally wouldn’t even think of and creating unique products that help immensely in technological advancements of day-to-day life. It is probably for this reason that the Indian government decided to establish the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in the initial phase of our country’s independence to develop a large group of individuals who could spearhead the country into the new age. Engineering is one of the most widely opted for undergraduate degrees in the country. Considering the reputation that comes with being a graduate of engineering, particularly if someone has graduated from one of the IITs, it is no surprise that the number of applicants for engineering courses is always on the rise with each passing year. The latest records for the Joint Engineering Entrance (JEE), the highest recognised entrance examination for premiere engineering colleges, states that over 14 lakh students registered to attempt the first round of the examination called the JEE (Main) in the hope of securing a seat in an IIT, NIT (National Institute of Technology), IIIT (Indian Institute of Information Technology), and other reputed institutes.
In order to attain the tag of being an engineer, a student in India can complete one of two undergraduate programmes. The two programmes offered in our country are the Bachelor of Engineering (BE) degree and the Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degree. Both courses have similar streams and specialisations and are modelled to serve the same goal: to educate a student and provide him/ her with the qualification of being an engineer with the technical knowledge required to excel in the field of engineering.
For the year 2013, 14 lakh students registered to appear in the JEE (Main) entrance exam for engineering colleges
POSTGRADUATE COURSES
For those students who have graduated in engineering and are looking to pursue further studies, the Master in Technology (MTech) programme is a widely recognised postgraduate course in the country.
ATTAINING A DOCTORATE
For those looking to achieve a doctorate after completing the initial stages of engineering, a few institutes offer a PhD programme in engineering. These programmes differ with the institute. Research programmes, integrated research programmes, correspondence, etc are all offered in India. Students may also do an MPhil before embarking on a PhD.

OVERVIEW
A race engineer is effectively the racing driver’s right hand man, the person he relies on to set up the car and give him the information he needs to perform at his best. A race engineer spends most on the road, travelling to races and tests in the search of that vital fraction of a second which will make the car faster. All that hard work can come down to a split-second decision, which is where a race engineer really shows his skill. The race engineer has a very involved role at races as he decides how the car is run, what the setup is, how much fuel is put, what tyres are put on and what tests are carried out.

TECHNOLOGIES Design engineering is an advanced and specialised branch of engineering that marries the principles and aesthetics of design with the knowhow and skills of engineering. Electronic gadgets, factory machines, equipment, etc are born from the work of design engineers who apply their artistic vision to the electronic and mechanical make-up of the structure or machine. Design engineers use computer-aided design (CAD) software like SolidWorks, Pro Engineer and DraftSight, and scripting languages like PLaSM to create and test their models, after which they build prototypes.

For those who are dreamers, forever redesigning gadgets and devices in their heads, and wishing those reinventions would see the light of day, design engineering is the way to go
of being employable virtually anywhere. Almost every industry that builds and manufactures is in need of design engineers. The most lucrative sectors are consumer electronics companies that make TVs, refrigerators, computers, etc; electronics system companies that are involved in system design; semiconductor companies that manufacture semiconductors which find use in a number of electronic devices; and telecom companies that make telephones, smartphones, mobile dongles, etc.
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
India is a burgeoning chip designing destination. With the increase in computer usage and higher demand for cheaper PCs, chip designers are constantly working on creating efficient computers at lower cost. While the designs are made in India, fabrication and manufacturing are rarely done so. The same can be
said for smartphones. However, smartphone usage has skyrocketed in India in the last couple of years, which has given birth to Indian smartphone manufacturers like Micromax and Karbonn. More than products, components are being designed in India – so semiconductors and integrated circuits (chips) are currently the domain of design engineers.

Three things I love about my job
The coolest thing about this job is that I deal with cutting edge technology. It was always my fantasy to learn how cool electronic gadgets work. The innovation and creativity I put in to make the world a safer and better place is the best part about my job.
Scope in India
Once you are specialised in the field and profile you want to focus on, a lot of high profile jobs are waiting for you. You can actually see your designs in the market. VLSI [very-largescale integration, the combining of thousands of transistors into a single chip] is one of most promising fields in design engineering.
The money
Compensation for a design engineer is way better than that for those in other engineering profiles.
A typical day at work
I am going through training right now, but I can tell you that the office is currently full of all the new technology and stuff they use in the industry.
Requisite skills
You need to be a smart worker more than a hard worker. You should also be familiar with and know the latest design tools [CAD software] available in the market.
Advice for budding chip designers
This is one of the most challenging branches of engineering. If you have the desire and passion to do something and see it come alive, this is the best branch for you.
Very-large-scale integration is the process that is responsible for several electronic devices – sensors, microphones, computers and amplifiers to name a few – we have today. Integrated circuits (‘chips’) are created by combining thousands of transistors. These chips find multiple uses.
WHAT IT INVOLVES
Transistors, which are the building blocks of modern electronic devices. They are capable of amplifying and switching electronic power and electronic signals.
WHAT IT PRODUCES
A small chip that functions as the ‘brain’ of the device. In a computer, this is a microprocessor, only a few centimetres long and wide, that is capable of doing all the functions of the computer’s brain – the CPU (central processing unit).
WHY IT NEEDS DESIGN ENGINEERS
Design engineers, owing to their engineering background, understand how VLSI works. • First they determine what functions the chip needs to carry out. • Then they draw up the components by breaking down the functions of the chip. • Next, they create a ‘floor plan’ to indicate where the components will be placed on the chip and how they will be interconnected. Design engineers try to keep the area of the chip as small as possible but sufficient to fit all components. • Once the design is final, they send it to manufacturers for it to be fabricated into a chip. The engineer with an army of
ROBOTS
Aakash Sinha is CEO of Omnipresent Robot Technologies Pvt. Ltd and visiting faculty at Delhi Technological University
How I became a robotics engineer
I studied electrical engineering at Delhi Technological University. Then, I did my master’s degree in robotics at Carnegie Mellon University. Eventually, I started my own company and we are currently working with DRDO, ISRO as well as police and defence forces.
Responsibilities at work
A typical robotics engineer has to decide which area he wants to specialise in. There are three aspects to robotics: sensing, thinking or action. Based on what one specialises it, he/ she will be doing different things. For example, someone working on action will be designing a robotic arm and testing it, while someone working on thinking will be writing software to simulate artificial intelligence.
3 things I love about my job
One of the best things is that you work on a robot, you programme it and you see it moving, almost like a living thing. People who work in this field, they lose track of time, they work day and night, and still keep enjoying that. The third thing is that robotics as a technology has so much scope to change our lives by solving unsolvable problems. For example, very acute surgeries which are extremely difficult to perform can be done by robots, now or in the future. Almost every aspect of life can be changed with robots and that’s exciting.
Scope in India
The next technology that everyone is going to use is robots. They will be doing chores at home, fighting wars, assisting the elderly, performing surgeries. Robotics in India is still growing, but there is definitely scope in defence robotics. As far are personal [consumer] robots are concerned, we have seen robotic vacuum cleaners. In India; they haven’t been hugely successful but it is coming up. Also, medical robotics is catching up; we have seen robot assisted surgeries and in the next five years or so we will see a lot more of these activities. Also, there is a lot of scope in robotics for an entrepreneur because the industry is new and it needs to be grown.
The money
It is difficult to find skilled robotics engineers in India. The problem is there are not many colleges offering good courses in robotics. However, someone who is hired after an undergraduate degree in robotics will earn about 10-25% more than a software engineer because it is a specialised field.
A typical day at work
Because I am also an entrepreneur, apart from the technical piece I have to ensure that people in my organisation are motivated and we are following our goals. I also have to catch up with investors, finances and clients. So 50% [of my time] goes in handling the business side and the
other 50% I focus on the technical side.
Perks and challenges
Because it is a growing industry, there is a lot of scope of inventing something that will revolutionise the industry. The biggest drawback is, even though the field is exciting, sometimes it can be frustrating because you will try to teach your robot something new but it will keep failing. It is certainly difficult to build intelligence into a machine, but you still have to persevere and try something new.
Requisite skills
People working on the action part, it would be good if they know designing software such as CAD and AUTO CAD, people who are working on a thinking piece, they should have knowledge of a good programming software such as C++, and those working on the sensing part, it would help if they have a knowledge of image processing, computer vision. But more than skills, if you are able to stay up all night because you love the field so much, that is important.
Advice for budding robotics engineers If you do enjoy robotics, it is a very good time to enter this field. In the next 4-5 years when the industry grows, you will be one of the first few pioneers. So it’s definitely an exciting field, but make sure this is really what you want to do in life.

How I became an aerospace engineer I was always extremely interested in physics and science as a child, and my dad, being an engineer, was a major inspiration. It is due to this that I pursued a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the US, where I specialised in spaceflight.
Responsibilities at work
I am currently the project manager at Team Indus, the only one from India competing in the Google Lunar X Prize (a global competition to find the
fledgling field in India, but it is growing fast. Our national aerospace labs are working on a wide array of military and commercial technologies. Our space agency is pushing to Mars and beyond, and is already carrying out the first preparations for indigenous manned spaceflight. I believe that the future of aerospace in India is very bright.
A typical day at work
One day you are struggling to find a propulsion system that fits all your requirements, the other you are trying to create a simulation to see how your craft will reach the Moon. The only
things constant are the enthusiasm, equations on the whiteboard, and hot masala chai!
Perks and challenges
The biggest perk has to be the pride of being referred to colloquially as a ‘rocket scientist’! But seriously, to have the knowledge and the ability to make massive vehicles weighing tonnes fly, go into space and land on other planets is immensely gratifying. There is a bit of a struggle to find the right job or the right kind of capital to start something entrepreneurial. But this is changing for the better.
Requisite skills
You have to be proficient in physics and maths and have basic proficiency in computing – aerospace vehicles are almost exclusively controlled by flight computers. Aerospace engineering brings together engineering fields like mechanical, electrical, computer, thermal, etc. The ability to understand each of these pieces and how they interact is the hallmark of an effective aerospace engineer. The final skill is a basic understanding of economics and risk as you want to be able to design something that is cost effective, and will still not fail.
Advice for budding aerospace engineers
If thoughts of reaching the stars keep you up at night, if you get butterflies in your stomach watching the same clip of a rocket launch on YouTube over and over again, then this is the field for you! So follow your heart and pursue it! There is nothing more gratifying in the world (or the Moon!). SEPTEMBER 2013 Youth Incorporated 45

LIVES
Meet Ajay Seth who works with orthopaedic implants that help stabilise and strengthen the skeletal framework of the human body
How I became a biomedical engineer My inclination towards the science of human body began during junior college. I was fascinated by the things we could achieve by combining engineering and biology. I completed my biomedical engineering in the year 2005. To further understand my abilities, I did my master’s degree in biomedical engineering (with a specialisation in orthopaedic biomechanics) in the USA.
3 things I love about my job
Working in the medical device industry makes you feel that you are working for a cause. You are fixing the lives of people who are distressed. I may not be a surgeon but I definitely make the life of a surgeon more
comfortable because I give him the service and products which he can depend on. The medical device industry is never stagnant. There are innovations every day. It is growing at a very rapid pace and we have the advantage of being at the forefront of these innovations. The industry is recession free and due to medical tourism boom in India there are a lot of opportunities.
requirements. I go to the operation theatre sometimes to assist a surgeon if one of my technicians is busy. Typically the entire day is spent making sure the material is dispatched to hospitals correctly because anything wrong will affect the surgery outcome. Evenings are utilised for customer meetings – meeting orthopaedic surgeons for demonstrations and introducing products.
Scope in India
Perks
Due to the population of India as well as growing medical tourism, there is ample opportunity in sales and marketing. However, due to limited resources and funding, there is little scope for innovations, new develoments or research. There is a huge demand among medical practitioners for entrepreneurs who can solve their current problem at a fraction of the cost of western manufacturers. However, this would take a huge investment and there is currently no government funding for medical device manufacturing. There is ample scope for research if one would like to pursue it but one will have to chart his/her own course.
The money
For an entrepreneur, it will depend on how much calculated risk he is willing to take in exploring the opportunities in India. Same goes for an executive. It is not unheard of to get a package of about `12 lakhs per annum with just a couple years’ experience.
A typical day at work

You know more about the human body than any other engineer and you can converse with medical practitioners better because you know the technical benefits of your products as well as how they help surgeons.
Requisite skills
There must be an inherent passion to learn biomedical engineering and one must be able to visualise a career which isn’t just like any other engineering career. He must know that he might not end up walking a chosen career path but he may require to carve his own path and emerge.
Advice for budding biomedical engineers
Seriously focus on one aspect of biomedical engineering. I chose orthopaedics because during a field trip to All India Institute of Rehabilitation, Mumbai I noticed that in India we still use primitive castings for poor people with fractures. Hence, I wanted to know more about these products and my research got me to where I am now. Dealing with world renowned brands in orthopaedic implants, I am now able to set my goals and envision my future in this business. SEPTEMBER 2013 Youth Incorporated 47

PERFECT SOUND
You get to be at the biggest concerts, you make the most popular musicians sound good, and set up the sound for blockbuster movies. Yes, that’s the life of a sound engineer
You have to be fascinated with sounds and music to be in this career. Audio engineering concerns the creative and practical aspects of sounds and music. An audio engineer works with recording, manipulation, mixing and reproduction of sounds. An audio engineer ensures that the sound that results from a TV show or a studio recording is of the highest quality.

While you don’t need a specific undergraduate degree to become an audio engineer, you need to genuinely love music. You need to know basic of sound so having an understanding of mathematics and physics helps. While there are institutes and colleges that offer courses on sound engineering, there’s nothing like interning at a studio and learning on the job.
CAREERS
There are jobs available in various industries for a qualified and experienced sound engineer. A sound engineer’s career can be varied and very exciting. There are opportunities in the field of movies, television, advertising, broadcasting, live concerts, multimedia organisations, CD production, schools and so on.
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
Technology like mixers, equipment and software keep changing and getting upgraded. You need to ensure you are aware of upgrades and adapt quickly.

Making One Republic sound good onSTAGE! Aries Fernandes, a sound engineer with Deltasound, talks through the life of a sound engineer
How I became a sound engineer
My dad had a small sound rental company and I used to assist him as a cable boy during summer vacations. During my college days I started working with Goa’s ace studio engineer Aurvile Rodrigues to learn the basics and finally moved to live sound engineering. Presently I am working as an audio engineer for Delta Sound, Qatar.
Responsibilities at work
A sound engineer’s responsibilities differ with different divisions of audio engineering. A systems engineer’s job is to make sure the right system is rigged for the specific venue and is tuned to compensate for room/ venue anomalies. A front-of-house engineer’s job is to make sure the band sounds well balanced to the audience, keeping in mind the genre of music he is mixing. A monitor engineer’s job is to make sure the band on stage is comfortable with their personal monitors, and can hear every other band member clearly. This is all with respect to audio in concert situations. In studios too engineers have designated jobs, like a recording engineer in a studio is responsible for capturing the cleanest recording of the artist, so as to make it easy for the mixing engineer to balance all the tracks.
3 things I love about my job Travel; I get to meet lots of people; I get to work with bands/musicians which most people worship.
Scope in India
India is a huge market and it’s booming. There are quite a few companies that are amazing, like Sound and Light Professionals, Sound. com, Electrocraft and Reynolds, which are on par with most companies globally; being associated with them as an audio engineer helps. Top engineers are mostly directly associated with the band/artist as their personal engineer, touring with them. The biggest employer is the film/studio/ TV industry. With growing number of films and TV channels, the demand for audio engineers is climbing.
Growth opportunities
Cable boy->assistant->audio tech ->audio engineer->systems engineer/ mix engineer->production manager/ project engineer/band engineer
The money
All I can say is it pays well. There are no broke audio engineers in comparison to stock brokers, real estate dealers, etc.
A typical day at work I don’t work. I just show up.
Challenges
The challenge of a live audio systems engineer is making sure the audio system performs to its optimum capacity, while the mixing engineer has to make sure the band sounds well balanced to the audience. He has just one go at it, there is no second chance. He has to make sure it sounds acceptable to the 10,000+ critics that are standing as audience.
Requisite skills
Audio engineering is a combination or art and science. It’s helpful to have some musical background and a knowledge of electronics. Today, everything is moving from traditional copper wire interconnects to CAT5, fibre optics, etc. Hence, knowledge of computer networking helps a lot.
Advice for budding sound engineers
It’s not as glamorous as it seems. In live concerts, you are one of the first few in and the last one out of the venue. Work with local sound studios during vacations or part-time. Above all, start listening to really good music which will help you understand good sound. SEPTEMBER 2013 Youth Incorporated 49

RAVISHING
Gaurav Mittal, Vice President of L’Soul Fragrances and Managing Director of Aromatic & Allied Chemicals, shares his passion for crafting fragrances
Responsibilities at work
At present I am involved in running two companies: Aromatic and Allied Chemicals (AAC) and L’Soul Fragrances (LSF). In AAC, I am involved in general management, manufacturing of natural essential oils and aroma chemicals, R&D (research and development) for development of new innovative natural products, developing new technologies for farming and working with farmers all over India for direct sourcing of natural crop oils. In LSF, I am involved in creating fragrances for national and international markets and travelling the world to know about new market trends in perfumery.
How I became a perfumer
Passion for this industry and my family business background. My father was into farming of natural essential crops in the early 70s and when he came back from the farms, he used to smell very fresh. He would say these were natural essential oils that were taken out from grass. After my school, it was clear in my mind who a perfumer is and what background is required to get into this line. Thus I chose to become a chemical engineer. Later I did a master’s in food and flavour technology. Further, I was selected to do a master’s in perfumery in France and later an MBM (Master in Business Management) in the UK. Both these degrees added to my first degree.
3 things I love about my job I feel happy and passionate and it’s challenging
Scope in India
Scope is tremendous. Due to increasing disposable income and marketing strategies, now people have money and knowledge to buy perfumes. For all big international giants, India is the target for income in perfumery, and they are trying hard to enter the Indian market.
The money
Frankly, no one knows the salary of a perfumer because they do not declare it. They are the pillar of any fragrance house, so imagine the salary of the ‘right’ perfumer.
A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK When a project comes, you are given a time target as well as the price target for making the perfume, but you are limited in the raw materials. CHALLENGES International regulations are always changing, so that makes life hard for a perfumer. Price driven markets and copycat products from competitors are other challenges. In India, there is considerable work being carried out in the field of stem cell research, particularly at Reliance Life Sciences and the National Centre for Biological Sciences, along with many other institutes. There is also significant support from the Government of India to develop stem cell research facilities in the country. Therefore, one can find employment (in R&D, clinical research, production, etc) at one of the various stem cell research institutes as well as pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
Earlier this year, a group of Japanese scientists were able to use stem cells to create a completely functional human liver, although, they said it could take another ten years for it to be applicable in regenerative medicine. There have been rapid developments in this field over the last decade and according to a study carried out by Transparency Market Research, the stem cell market is pegged to reach US$120 billion by 2018.

INCURABLE CORNELL UNIVERSITY PHOTOGRAPHY
Ankur Singh is Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Cornell University and directs the Immunotherapy and Cell Engineering Lab at Cornell. His primary areas of research are immuneengineering, stem cell engineering, and microscale-nanoscale bioengineering
How I became a stem cell engineer
I have always believed that by applying our knowledge of engineering, we can solve the most difficult problems in biology and medicine. During my PhD at the University of Texas (Austin), I engineered vaccines against Lymphoma. Some of the observations in pre-clinical research against cancer made me interested in personalised medicine. To that end, stem cells are one of the best answers as these
specialised cells can be obtained from the patient and transformed into other more adult or mature cells. I have been particularly interested in ‘induced pluripotent stem cells’ that can be derived in well-equipped labs by taking skin or blood samples and reverting them from an adult state to an embryonic-like stem cell state. These stem cells can then form pretty much every other cell type in the body.
Responsibilities at work
integrated strategy. There are institutes that offer programmes in stem cells and several new companies are getting involved in this research.
A typical day at work
My typical day at work starts with responding to the important emails and then meeting researchers and overseeing the ongoing lab work. I engage in discussions with my researchers to see their progress and troubleshoot any problems related to the work. I spend a good amount of my time writing research grants to bring in funding to the lab. I also have slots dedicated to my teaching activities and meeting with my class students.
Like most other university professors (in the US), I actively engage in cutting-edge research, supervise a team of researchers, and organise and conduct lectures. The projects in my laboratory (Immunotherapy and Cell Engineering Lab at Cornell) are geared towards solving unmet medical needs and applying engineering fundamentals to come up with improved therapies against infections, cancers, and osteoarthritis.
Requisite skills
3 things I love about my job
In the USA, an engineering professor gets a competitive compensation. This along with the job satisfaction, job security, retirement benefits, health benefits, and the quality of life speak for itself. However, the initial years of a tenure track faculty position are highly demanding. Like other nations, we also face the economic issues that could affect lab dynamics and research.
I enjoy the flexibility in my job which allows me to engage in professional activities outside of Cornell and conduct research driven by my own ideas. I like being surrounded by intellectuals; Cornell students are highly talented and we have a pool of world renowned faculty. If you do good work in the field of your expertise, there is strong recognition by your peers which is very rewarding.
Scope in India
Stem cell engineering is an emerging field worldwide with tremendous scope in translational medicine, screening of drugs, and many other areas. In India, continuous efforts are being made at the academic and industry levels to come up with an
It requires fundamental understanding of stem cell biology and how engineering tools are applied in medicine. To conduct active research, one needs to be highly proficient in cell culture techniques, running biological assays and analyses, and an ability to integrate engineering with biology. Lab infrastructure that supports this level of research is also critical.
Perks and challenges
Advice for budding stem cell engineers
Gather fundamental knowledge about the current state of the field and obtain hands-on training in labs that are well equipped. This field is ethically sensitive and demands responsible research practices. I encourage researchers to gather experience from leading stem cell labs worldwide. yi SEPTEMBER 2013 Youth Incorporated 55

hen you’re a kid, you want to be a barber, a gardener, an astronaut or some other wacky profession (I wanted to be a pirate). But if you’re an Indian kid with a seemingly higher level of intellect, there is invariably one road that seems to promise to take you to wonderland. So you become an engineer. At the end of a four year battle to win a BE or BTech degree, you’re a
from a ‘senior’. Once the principal is done congratulating you on making it to the college, and invariably promising you a safe and ragging-free pursuit of excellence, the ‘seniors’ give you the follow-up welcome speech. “Only formals, no fancy hair, no soul patch”, and of course, their pending college assignments come before your own. Obviously they can be rude to you and whack you around. Ask any IIT guy what GPL is and you will be enriched.
Give your engineer-ego a break! Somebody already gave you Lego blocks, right? Why not build yourself a fancy building with it instead of looking to build even more complicated building blocks?
Lesson 3 “To hell with circumstances; I create opportunities” I don’t endorse cheating, no. But if you can scan a soft drink bottle’s

You need to think on your feet all the time. Whatever the situation – be it assignments or graphics sheets – you will and should always come up with an answer. Simply the biggest lesson you can take away.
Lessons 4, 5 & 6 Work, work and work some more; but work smart
Internships: Engineers turn out to be the coolest people. Even after scoring disastrous marks, I can configure networks, block them, do something fancy with Facebook pages and even create web pages. How did I learn? I interned. Stuff you learn in college will barely resemble industry work. If you want to learn, you need to intern. Hunt down the places where you think you’ll learn the most and just apply. Writing papers: Your presentation of ideas will be judged, so do it well. Read as many journals as you can. If your college doesn’t provide you with any, there’s always the Internet, where you can access the IEEE website. Remember to aim high. And in doing so, hit the nail on its head.
Lesson 7 Extra-curriculars? Do them
You will be trained to filter unwanted speech from your head to allow yourself a power nap in class, and your cartoon drawing skills will attain unimaginable heights. Even then, try and be a part of any event that goes on. If you’re not skilled enough to be the rock musician in a fest, at least sing along. If you don’t think that this is going to help, check out Rowan Atkinson, aka Mr. Bean’s educational profile (hint: he has an MSc in electrical engineering).
Lesson 8 And then life’s like that If you’re a guy and watch a bit of Bollywood now and then, you’re sure to have thought about singing in a concert to woo the best looking girl in college. Reality check: you need to sing on the streets first to get some girls to step into your college. If that backfires, I guess you have to fall back on the ones that are in your college. I am a feminist, by the way. yi
DAFFY ENGINEERING DEFINITIONS ENGINEER A person who hopes he can build iron suits and fly like Ironman, but is actually the person whose advice is sought any time any problem remotely related to household repairs and maths crops up. So long, Tony Stark. PRACTICALS If you’re a guy, practicals are spent staring at girls poring over complicated equipment, doing your experiment or theirs and destroying a fair bit of them, and then copying their results.
FULLMETALDEVIL, DEVIANTART
LANGUAGE Apparent gibberish with fancy names like C, Java, etc. It’s something you can’t communicate in. Only your computer understands you, which explains many a relationship between an engineer and his/her computer. COPY AND PASTE An engineer’s solution to unfinished assignments. As I said, always build on whatever is already there (the Internet).

Supply enough information, but keep it short, accurate and check your spelling and grammar.
PART-TIME MBA Q: I completed MCom from Pune University in 2008. I have been working with a manufacturing organisation as Accounts Executive for more than nine years. Would doing a part-time MBA in finance be useful for better growth prospects? Which institute would be the best? Shivaji Jadhav ANSWER ANSWER
A part-time MBA would be the right thing to do to enhance the speed and prospects for advancement while you continue working. Seek admission to a part-time MBA programme which is approved by AICTE/offered by a recognised university. You would need to qualify a written test, and group discussion/personal interview as part of the admission process. Although a part-time programme does not offer campus placement, your batch mates working in different organisations and visiting faculty from the industry could widen your network of contacts for insight into better openings after the MBA.
TIME FRAME Q: What is the right time to start my preparation for study abroad?
Praful
Start gathering information about the programme/s, countries and universities you want to consider, and review eligibility criteria, admission requirements and tentative prospects for eventual employment around two years before you expect to join. Application deadlines are usually 9-12 months in advance of the commencement of the programme. Hence, you will need to make an informed choice a year in advance of your application. You will need to have all necessary documents, transcripts, admission essays (SOPs) and letters of reference ready on time to do justice to such an important investment in your future.

SCIENCE OPTIONS Q: I have done my class 12 with PCB. I dropped one year to prepare for medical entrance tests, but could not succeed. What are my career options now? Aishwarya Your options include bachelor’s degree programmes in pharmacy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, prosthetics and orthotics, optometry, medical laboratory technology in the context of your academic background and interests thus far. A hotel management degree, a home science degree, a law degree, etc are alternative professional courses after class 12. A five-year integrated MSc or a dual degree BS-MS (five years) would lead to careers in research in medical/ life sciences eventually. Or, you could do BSc/BCom/BA or another non-professional bachelor’s degree and plan to pursue a post graduate professional degree such as MBA, journalism, or the three-year LLB, etc after graduation. Examples are indicative, not exhaustive.

DECORATIONS: Your guests should ideally turn up in their own custom-made masks. But have a bowl filled with party masks ready as stand-by for those party poopers who refuse to play along and those whose masks suffer irrecoverable damages. For décor, use drapes (royal blue with yellow or black and gold), ribbons and safely placed candles (you don’t really want fire blazing on the dance floor). You can also scatter props such as boa feathers, canes, etc around the house for the guests to use for a dramatic photo session. FOOD AND DRINKS: Bite sized appetizers are recommended; limited vision owing to the masks can erupt in messy food disasters. Also, use champagne glasses to set the mood even if you’re serving apple juice. ENTERTAINMENT: To encourage people to get creative with their attire, mention a prize for the best dressed man and woman in the invitations. Create red ‘May I have a dance’ (or even ‘May I have a date’ cards if you want to turn this into a matchmaking affair) and distribute them to guests for them to formally secure a dance partner. Each guest offers three details about him/ herself while the other guests try to figure out which one of those three is a lie. GAME NIGHT If elaborate costumes and decorations give you a headache, try hosting a game night. No fuss, no big budgets, but plenty of fun. DECORATIONS: Set up games around the house to create different ‘game zones’, like a Twister area, Scrabble area, Jenga area, even an Xbox area. If you have a designated area for playing cards, try stacking up a couple of house of cards (or cheat by gluing the cards together).
ENTERTAINMENT: You know the answer to this one. Be prepared with a variety of games to keep up with changing moods. Game night favourites include Monopoly, Scrabble, Twister, Taboo and Poker. You can keep individual scores for players through the evening and declare a final gaming champion at the end of the night. Penalty for losers makes it more exciting: maybe drink an egg milkshake or refill everyone’s drinks for the rest of the night?
FOOD AND DRINKS: Pizza or popcorn: you’ll need either one of these in abundance. You can also prepare cupcakes in the shape of dice or scrabble tiles for dessert.
MUSIC: If you want to fuel the competitive spirit in your guests, a playlist with songs like Winner takes it all, Another one bites the dust and Eye of the tiger.

rather for those who like the idea of breathtaking views while being away from the grime and claustrophobia of India’s cities and towns. If you are looking for peace and serenity and just want to admire nature at her best, then India’s mountain ranges house some beautiful spots which literally take you a little bit closer to heaven. Hills that tower to the sky, valleys that sweep through the land and fresh air that provides nature’s most intoxicating high, these places have it all.
The flower children say Crank’s Ridge is not a place; it’s a state of mind. This tiny pine-covered ridge is located on the way to Kasar Devi temple, above the town of Almora, in Uttarakhand. The place got its popular name Crank’s Ridge after the iconic American psychologist Timothy Leary streaked on the ridge in the 1960s, when it became part of the hippie trail, during the peak of the hippie movement.
WHY GO THERE?
Perhaps the most popular spot in the hippie trail, Crank’s Ridge gets its fame from being a strong spiritual power centre. Legend has it that it’s due to the alleged gap in the Van Allen Belt above the ridge, a perception arguably strengthened by the free and easy availability of ‘wild plants’ on the slopes. People from Swami Vivekananda and Rabindranath Tagore to Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens came here to soak in some inspiration.

his has been one of the most talked about television series in the news circuit. Starring Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor in the lead along with Tisca Chopra, Mandira Bedi, Ajinkya Deo, 24 is a thriller drama revolving around terrorism. The series is a remake of the famous American series by the same name, which also had Anil Kapoor playing the role of President Omar Hassan. This is one of the first teleseries to be following the strategy of a film promotion with a first look unveiling followed by a trailer release in theatres with the release of Madras Cafe. The series has been shot in some of the interior locations of Mumbai like Cotton Green and Sewri.
P
ornstar-turned-actress Sunny Leone who is just a film old will now be acting along with her husband Daniel Weber in her next. Titled Jackpot, the movie will have Daniel in a cameo, playing the role of a small time conman with shades of grey.
Daniel also revealed that the director Kaizad Gustad approached him for the role and he readily accepted to do it. However, in the film, Sunny is paired opposite Sachiin Joshi and we hear that Sunny wouldn’t be doing any romantic scenes with her hubby. Jackpot also features Naseeruddin Shah in a prominent role and has recently completed its first shooting schedule in Goa. SEPTEMBER 2013 Youth Incorporated 69

RELATIONSHIPS
T H E
Getting out of the friend zone is no easy task, but it isn’t impossible. Aparna Sundaresan provides some pointers on turning your platonic relationship into a romantic one
N
E H T
obody likes being in the friend zone. It’s an uncomfortable and awkward position to be in, especially when you have feelings for someone and you end up being their buddy. Or when you’ve been friends with someone for the longest time and suddenly you want to be something more to them, but they don’t see it. It’s painful just thinking about breaking the friend mould, so what do you do? Keep your feelings to yourself and hope they go away? We say ‘better out than in’, so don’t bottle up those feelings just yet.

Take a step back from your friend’s life. Be less interested and involved in their activities. This doesn’t give you the right to be cold and distant, though. Spend more time on the things you already do. This is a good time to catch up with some old friends as well. Instead of being a permanent fixture in your friend’s life, make guest appearances.
PSSST...
Take a step back
...TSSSP
Step one
Disappear for a bit You read that right. From guest appearances, become a no-show – not in the way that you ditch your friend, but in a way that you’re so busy with your life that you can no longer spare the time to see them. This piques your friend’s interest (especially if it’s a girl) – what are you doing that’s more important than them?
Do new things Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn knitting, or salsa dancing, or calligraphy, or Portuguese, or go to the gym and get fit. Now is as good a time as any to take it up. A new hobby will keep your mind off your friend. Step four
Make new friends
You can never have too many friends. Make new friends from the same and opposite sex. Being around new people will do you some good. Then go back to your friend-crush and tell them about all these awesome new buddies.
If you’re a girl who has a thing for her guy friend, you need not try the seven-step method right away. Men are usually more open to advances, so drop subtle hints first and see if he gets it; or just make a move on him. If he responds, go for it. If not, try the seven-step method. If you’re a guy who wants a girl’s attention, the easiest way to do so is by denying her attention. Girls like attention, so loss of attention will get you her attention.
Step two
Step three
The common misconception is that women always put men in the friend zone. Not true. Women also find themselves in the friend zone at times.
If none of these methods work, take the hint. They’re not interested. It’s best to take the rejection in your stride and move on.
Step five
Go on a few dates This is good for multiple reasons: one, when you date a few people and ask your friend for dating advice, you will make them a little jealous; two, you’ll show that there are more sides to your personality; three, you might actually meet someone you like better! After you’ve been with a few people, reconsider your friend-crush – are you still interested in them? The answer might surprise you. Step six
Make them invest
ANGELO GONZÁLEZ, FLICKR
In the relationship, that is. It’s possible that since you are the one with the feelings, you’ve done plenty of favours for your friend. Turn the tables; let them do things for you from time to time for a change. Let them know that you cannot be taken for granted. Step seven
Hang out one-on-one
Start hanging out with your friend alone. Just the two of you. No group of friends surrounding you. This changes the dynamic of your interaction. Your friend will be forced to pay more attention to you. And by this time, if you’ve followed all these steps, your friend will also miss your constant presence in their life. This is when you take your conversation up a notch: Talk about other women or men and what turns you on about them (“I love girls in high heels” or “I love it when guys have messy hair”). Touch them in a light, playful way. Touch their arm or shoulder briefly. Physical contact is more powerful than one can imagine, and when done correctly, excites the other person. Don’t get creepy, though, and don’t do it too often. You don’t want your touch to seem like a one-time mistake but you also don’t want to come off as a pervert. yi

On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, Nisha JamVwal reminisces about her student days and offers some helpful advice to students and teachers alike on strengthening their relationship
T
he gurukul ashrams of ancient India had revered teachers, and our ancient parampara was to obey and revere our teachers at all costs. Never question and give guru dakshina for the pearls of wisdom we received. How things have changed, haven’t they? We are taught to question; often professors are on first name basis with their students; and we have a kind of bonhomie with our teachers. With the onset of Teachers’ Day, my question to all of us would be, are we at all grateful to our teachers and do we celebrate them enough? Now, maybe you’ll react to this and say, teachers are not that dedicated anymore. They’re just doing a job! To that I’d respond that life is synergetic. I adored some of my professors and I have to say I was a favourite often. Okay, so some amount of buttering-up did happen, but I promise you, more often than not I genuinely hero worshiped my extra special teachers. If you were to ask me which professor I remember until today, I’d say it was Mr Scott at the architectural school in California
where I went to study interior architecture. He made me editor of the yearbook and I worked extra hard for his subject. He taught us three dimensional drafting and made it extra exciting for us. I reprimand myself for being so excited at passing as the best student of the year for which I won a plaque, and that I didn’t take any coordinates to keep in touch with them. Come to think of it, I miss all of them. The thing really is that you actually begin to appreciate teachers when you grow up, when you go to grad school or even as an undergrad. When you are younger, you really want to get over and done with it all (at least I did) and are terrorised by exams. Here, I’d like to say a tiny something to all teachers too – perhaps the magic wand of creating interest for studies, books, facts and education lies with you, and if you were to be more hands on, less focused on only exams and a little exciting about the world we live in, our sciences and our languages, co-relating it to our everyday lives – you’d have more involved, dedicated, excited and exciting students. And think how delighted that might make you. Yes, Bollywood’s Three Idiots definitely had a strong message for teachers that terrorise – enjoy the process, for you shall have passionate students who would make your job so satisfying. For students, the film aptly showed that you should follow your heart over greed when choosing your discipline or specialisation and then you’ll naturally be a winner. And if your teacher is severe on you, work at creating a rapport and a bond; it can be a beautiful, fulfilling and rewarding relationship. yi

TECH ADVICE
I’VE JUST BOUGHT A DSLR. WHAT ARE THE BASIC LENSES I SHOULD INVEST IN? IT DEPENDS ENTIRELY ON WHAT YOU INTEND TO CLICK. DIFFERENT LENSES ARE SUITABLE UNDER DIFFERENT CONDITIONS TO PROVIDE YOU THE BEST POSSIBLE IMAGE SO MATCH THE STRENGTHS OF THE LENSES TO THE SITUATION YOU WILL USE THEM IN
`5,500
Google continues to amaze with their brilliant products, and their latest unveiling called the Chromecast is a slick new device which allows you to stream videos on your television directly from the Internet. FEATURES Connects to your TV via the HDMI port Uses WiFi to connect to the Internet and stream films and TV shows on your computer Requires an app download on your smartphone which allows it to function as a remote control
FINAL VERDICT: This easy-to-use product comes at less than half the price of its competitors. It’s definitely worth the buy but there are limited online streaming options at the moment.
For nature photography with animals, birds, plants and flowers, a telephoto zoom lens of 55-250 mm is perfect for shooting.
1 For taking images of landscapes, remember to keep an 18-55 mm wide angle lens in your arsenal. They usually come as part of the kit when you purchase your camera.
2 If you are bound to shoot images in low-light situations like at night or in parties or indoor functions, a prime lens is important since it is the best lens available for use in dimly lit areas.

Tekfusion Twinwoofers M `2,100
Bangalore-based company Tekfusion recently launched these smartphone friendly earphones. FEATURES Comfortable for music and calls Microphone with a button for answering and disconnecting calls Can also pause, play and skip songs Compatible with Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry
FINAL VERDICT: For the price and the fragility of the cable, the Twinwoofers M isn’t the best option. It is average in terms of audio quality which is another deterrent.
3
A macro lens is the most useful if you like taking high quality close ups with a lot of detail. For a beginner in photography, try experimenting with your kit lenses before investing too much in additional lenses. If you are an amateur planning on taking up photography as a career, you should definitely stock up on three lenses: prime, wide angle and telephoto zoom

DANIEL OGREN, WIKIMEDIA COMMONS
A CROAKY CALL FROM
THE CUCKOO’S CALLING
As much as I wanted to divorce the name J.K. Rowling from The Cuckoo’s Calling while reading it, I couldn’t. No one can. It doesn’t matter if the author is on everybody’s lips or is an absolute stranger; their life, their work, their previous written work all leak into the reading experience, and you cannot help but draw comparisons and make judgements. With that disclosure out of the way, let’s see what Rowling’s latest work (written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith) offers. An unconventional hero (‘pubey’ hair, amputated leg, large and corpulent body, the son of a rock star!) – Cormoran Strike, a private detective. His smart and pretty sidekick (called Robin; how subtle). A beautiful model who has apparently committed suicide and her brother who is convinced it is murder. And then a supporting cast that is really a cross-section of all of humanity. And so, The Cuckoo’s Calling is less about the plot and more about its characters, much like The Casual Vacancy. That there is a possible murder lingers in the background more often, as Rowling delves into the lives of her people. Her trademark long, descriptive sentences, while a pleasure to read, do little to move the story along. And when she does arrive at the resolution, you are a little lost, because she doesn’t share Strike’s unlocking of the mystery with you. The ‘who’ of whodunit will surprise you, but there is really no other thrill in the book. For those accustomed to the quick, racy and immediately consumable nature of Jeffery Archer, Lee Child and Dan Brown books, The Cuckoo’s Calling will be unnecessarily long and difficult to engage with. This isn’t like other murder mysteries; this is more literary. But if you are a fan of Rowling’s writing, you will read it anyway and will rejoice that she’s continuing the series with Strike and Robin. -Aparna Sundaresan

Rising STAR
Jose Neil Gomes has played with Grammy winners A.R. Rahman, Imogen Heap, Seun Kuty, and Juno Reactor; is a part of critically acclaimed Sufi artist – Kailash Kher’s band, Kailasa; has toured the world playing music and in his free time managed to learn 23 different musical instruments!
Three musicians that inspire you
The best venue you played at
Most under rated musician
Most memorable gig
An Indian musician you would like to jam with
Next show you are playing at
Only worked with him once, but never jammed. Ranjit Barot.
Now that depends on where you are located, and how far you’d be willing to travel.
The ‘nouveau riche’ Indian audiences that lack culture, class, and basic respect for the ‘other’, let alone artistes.
Two instruments you always carry along
One quirky habit or superstition you have
Being a musician in India
Every new song that I make!
Michael Jackson, Trilok Gurtu, and Avishai Cohen With Kailasa in Karachi, in early 2012. Mad energies.
Worst audience experience
Financially stressful if you’re doing the independent scene and artistically stagnant if you’re doing the commercial scenes.
The funniest experience that happened on tour
Too many to pen down. Getting lost in New York with no phone, and then finding the hotel on my own was one of the best.
Undoubtedly Royal Albert Hall, London, followed by Nokia Theater, LA.
Violin and acoustic guitar
Your happy song
If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would it be?
Loads. To start, Istanbul, Cuba, Tel Aviv; it goes on...
Your musical influences
Every sound I’ve ever heard since childhood, including the crazy truck horns on highways.
Harmeet Mansata (popularly known as Max) and lots of other crazy musicians I don’t know of as yet.
My obsession with the number three, six, nine, and all its multiples.
The most difficult instrument to master The violin, till I got myself an accordion. I still can’t play it decently enough.
The strangest instrument you’ve played
I've tried a lot of folk instruments which are beautiful; the strangest however, would be any untuned instrument. yi

PLACES AND EVENTS FOR THE MONTH
THE LITTLE DOOR, MUMBAI Tucked away in suburban Mumbai, The Little Door has both indoor and outdoor seating and occasionally plays host to musical performances and other events. CUISINE: Continental for the most part with rich Italian and Spanish cuisine on highlight FOOD AND DRINKS: Try sangria if you like a refreshing drink. If wine isn’t your style, go for one of their signature cocktails or enjoy a decently priced beer, or go non-alcoholic with a mocktail. The food is quite delicious. Start with an appetizer; the bruschetta is recommended. Try the pasta in the mains. The immaculate, thin crust pizzas are a must-have. OVERALL IMPRESSION: The décor is relaxing; both indoor and outdoor. The lowlight ambience provides a personal, romantic vibe. If you happen to visit on one of the days they have musical performances or any other event, you will surely have a novel experience. The staff seem a little distracted but are pleasant and ready to serve. B 31, Ground Floor, Shree Siddhivinayak Plaza, Off New Link Road, Andheri West - Tarun Khilnani
