From sports cars to hybrids, convertibles to vintage, there are hundreds of wheels on our roads today. All of this coupled with interviews of some of the most experienced people involved in the various dynamics that bring together the vehicles that make our life so much easier.
With a rise in the variety of careers that flood our youth today, it gets difficult picking out one that would best suit you. Combining what you’ve studied and what you love doing, the choices that we’re left with are pretty slim. How then do we single out one career for ourselves? Take a look at some of the workplace hacks we offer in Get It Right. Speaking of making the job scenario easier, we bring you some scoop on the LinkedIn Placement initiative in India and what’s expected of it. The year is finally coming to an end and its time to sit back, reminence about the time that went by, take stock and gather your thoughts like what you achieved, your significant milestones or some failures and losses you overcame. It will help you get a lot of clarity about life and where you wish to head. I have been doing my thinking where I kind of resonate to what Amir Khan had to say about the current affairs of our country. All one reads or hears about is scams, rapes, terrorism, natural calamities and a whole lot of chaos. So what kind of society or people are we becoming? Have we lost all our tolerance, kindness, compassion towards fellow human beings? It makes me wonder what can we do to make out times better. So maybe instead of just raving and ranting or bitching on social media platforms let us each try and do something to make things better. Instead of blowing hot air its time to take action as we are the future and have the power to create a better world. Getting into the festive groove, now we look back at some of the good and not so good, yet unforgettable happenings of the year in #Recap 2015. Wish you all Feliz Navidad !

There’s so much more to life than just working and chilling out. Use some of your time to give back to the world that keeps giving you so much
16 Youth Incorporated december 2015
W
e’re either working long hours or relaxing with a few beers in hand. It rarely occurs to us to go out and do something that doesn’t benefit us at all. It could be something as small as spending some time with an elderly neighbor who lives alone to planting trees in your locality. Some schools and colleges have incorporated community service into their extra-curriculum in recent times. But more often than not, we engage in the activity to get the necessary certification rather than really wanting to reach out. Winston Churchill said,” We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Community service is more than just giving off your old clothes to the poor or signing a cheque as a donation to a foundation. All of that is good, no doubt, but money is not going to save our dwindling environment or make an orphan feel loved. We belong to the fortunate strata of society and sadly, it’s a very small portion of the populace. Among other things we take for granted, a good home to go back to, a sumptuous meal on our tables every night and the education that’s provided for us are the one’s that top the list. When we are given so much, it’s very easy to overlook those that aren’t so blessed. It doesn’t occur to us that maybe there’s a child out there struggling to read under the street light after a day of toiling for his family. Or that maybe the family which huddles together to sleep on a single mat near your parking lot must have gone without food tonight. So you get my point. There’s so much ill-fortune in the world out there and we so easily drift by turning a blind eye to everything around. If you’re not already a part of something that doesn’t involve only selfindulgence, then go out there and look for something you could apply yourself to. There’s tons of organizations that help with education for street children, like Aakansha and Teach for India. If
you don’t think you’d be good at that, then get hold of your friend circle and visit an old age home once a month. You could also help out with litter campaigns or if you can manage a few days off, then sign yourself up for a rural camp. Even something fun like playing football or cricket with the street kids in your area. Service in itself is about moving out of oneself to connect with another. Taking some time out to do this will enhance your life in ways you wouldn’t think of. Reaching out to the world is something that every single one of us can and must do.
We talk to Romana Shaikh, Director of Training and Impact at Teach for India on what got her interested, her experiences and how to get the community as a whole involved in service. What inspired you to join Teach for India? During my years at St. Xavier’s college, the 26/11 terror attack struck. At that time, people began discriminating Muslims and blaming them for the attacks. Even the people around me in college had similar opinions and judged the sect relentlessly. That’s when I realized that the people who were trained to carry out these attacks knew no better. They were taught to strike and kill and that was their primary education. That’s when I realized the importance of education in someone’s life and how it shapes the person they are and who they turn out to be. TFI was introduced to us in college and I joined as a fellow for 2 years and got involved and grown
more so in the following years. How has your experience been working with the kids at TFI? During my two years of fellowship, I realized that I love being a teacher. Over the past three years as a part of staff, I realized that being a teacher is everything. I don’t understand manager, coach, teacher, leader as separate things, for me it’s just teaching. At TFI, I got a chance to do more than just teach the kids and go back home. I got to meet their parents and visit their home and really see what poverty feels like. I got to understand the various problems they faced. We have social involvement programs in schools and colleges, but it doesn’t really give us a complete insight to what’s going on below the surface. At TFI, I had a bigger realization of the discrimination that is still prevalent. Can you stress the need for community service among the youth and how can they be encouraged to be a part of it? I wouldn’t call it community service but more like getting involved and really getting to know what’s happening in our society. The population is growing by the day and with it, poverty and corruption at multiple levels. We need to start by changing our lives in order to someday bring a change in the world. We need to start caring about each other and just moving out of ourselves and getting involved in the life of someone not as fortunate as you. We need to be empathetic to the lives of others. We are literate and yet insensitive, knowledgeable and yet we don’t understand the challenges faced in our community. We need to realize how privileged we are in the way we are and unprivileged we are in the way we are. We need to be mobilized to take action. The country needs to be made aware of the problems being faced and also about all the avenues that are available for them to reach out andw help. yi december 2015 Youth Incorporated 17

The
Marijuana Law
C
onsidering we are talking about such a historically controversial subject, it’s only fitting we start right at the beginning of the controversy. After all, they do say it is the best place to start a story, right? So, what was the deal with marijuana? In the times of lore in India, marijuana was considered to be a very inculcated part of our culture. In fact, take a trip to the innermost villages in the country, and it is not uncommon
18 Youth Incorporated december 2015
to find a group of grandmothers, sitting in a squatted circle, huffing a primitive, definitely well-seasoned chillum to glory after a hearty meal. So in a country where we chose to restrict everything that a woman should or should not do since the earliest times, if marijuana was not an issue for grandmothers, who can be arguably called the pariahs of Indian virtues and culture, why do we fear the weed enough to have banned it for decades?
The history of the ban
The story started in 1961, with the ‘single convention on narcotic drugs’ the first ever international treaty to have clubbed cannabis (or marijuana) with hard drugs and imposed a blanket ban on their production and supply except for medicinal and research purposes. During the negotiations for the UN treaty signed in New York, a group of cannabis and opium producing countries, led by India, opposed its intolerance to the
Marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug in the world with an estimated 125 million people consuming it in some form or the other every year. In India, marijuana use has been historically bound to faith and mysticism. Why then is it so stringently banned? And more importantly, should it be? Madhura Sansare embarks on a journey through the fields of hemp to find out. socio-cultural use of organic drugs. They were however overwhelmed by the US and other western countries which espoused tight controls on the production of organic raw material and on illicit trafficking. While most of the states in the US had banned all narcotic drugs by the '40s, India had a more pragmatic approach since its colonial days: its restrictions were focused on harder substances like opium. Considering the social aspect of the drug in India, and the traditional
consumption associated iwth it. the UN gave India 25 years to abolish the practice of use of recreational drugs. It was only towards the end of this period that the Indian government at that time, more popularly known as the Rajiv Gandhi government conformed to the 1961 treaty, the narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances act (NDPS) and thus, marijuana was illegal in India. NDPS specified that cannabis meant charas (the resin extracted from the plant), ganja (the flowering or fruiting tops of the plant) and any mixture or drink prepared from either of the two permitted forms of marijuana. Thus, NDPS allows people to smoke pot or drink bhang so long as they can prove that they had consumed only the leaves and seeds of the cannabis plant. Which, if you ask us, makes no sense at all. And of course, as with all laws, this one too stuck long enough for the practise of the law to not be associated with the terminology of it. So if you're caught with only the leaves and the seeds of the drug today, dont expect to be spared.
Pros
Marijuana use is not as harmful as it is made out to be. In fact tetrahydrocannabinol or THC contained in marijuana has been shown to have significant health benefits. CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent, Sanjay Gupta, wrote in an article titled Why I Changed My Mind on Weed: “Medical marijuana is not new, and the medical community has been writing about it for a long time. There were in fact hundreds of journal articles, mostly documenting the benefits. Most of those papers, however, were written between the years 1840 and 1930. The papers described the use of medical marijuana to treat ‘neuralgia, convulsive disorders, emaciation,’ among other things.” Medical marijuana helps as a sleep aid; helps combat nausea due to chemotherapy; and helps with muscle
tension, spasms and chronic pain. Further, marijuana is shown to be much less addictive than cigarettes or tobacco. Marijuana is reportedly less addictive than alochol and cigarettes. If alcohol and tobacco are legal, then why shouldn’t marijuana be legal, given that it is less lethal as well? Indeed, there have been no deaths reported of marijuana overdose. It reportedly takes 15,00 pounds of marijuana injested in 15minutes to induce a lethal response. For all these reasons legalization of marijuana at a minimum can reduce illegal cross border trafficking, reduce illicit pot farms and create a more effective and regulated market for meeting the obvious demand for this drug, while also creating an entirely new industry that can produce marijuana not only for smoking, but hemp can also be used for textile purposes, among others. Imagine the number of jobs that can come out of this!
Cons
In support of legalization, the libertarian view is that individuals should be allowed to put whatever they want in their bodies and the liberal view is that the war on drugs has failed and that it has disproportionately impacted minorities. Either is not a sufficient argument to legalize a substance for recreational use that seriously impairs one’s judgment and health. Its a simple judgement call. And one that needs you to look back into history. Marijuana was a part of the Indian culture for centuries, which kept its use to a minimum. Since it's illegal status, the number of marijuana users has grown exponentially. We created a war against drugs where there wasn't one. The country that enforced this law upon us is now slowly chnaging it's own stance on the issue state-wise. The question to answer is, do we continue on with an archaic law, that wasnt even ours in the first place, or do we move on? yi december 2015 Youth Incorporated 19

The Theory of
God
If you’ve wanted to know more about God than what’s normally portrayed, a course in Theology might pique your interest.
S
tudents opting for religious studies may consider pursuing courses in theology, which can help them pursue a career as religious scholars, experts and leaders. Theology can be defined as the systematic and rational study of the concepts of God and of the nature of religious ideas; usually at a university, seminary or school of divinity. It can be contrasted with religious studies, which is the study of religion from a secular perspective. The word ‘theology’ comes from two Greek words that combined mean ‘the study of God’.
20 Youth Incorporated december 2015
Career Prospects
Missionary: Students with a degree or diploma in theology can act as missionaries that would enable them to travel to different parts of the world, mostly poorer or third-world countries, and teach and help the natives of those countries establish themselves. Religious Leaders: Students also have opportunities to lead worship or play a key role in Church leadership. As a pastor of a church, they can lead a congregation in worship and spiritual guidance for the community.
Educationalists: The students wanting to work as educators might have to work to earn a master’s degree or doctorate in theology and teach at a university or college. Opportunities are available at the elementary, middle and high school levels, where one can impart religious teachings. Ministers: Most people with degrees in Theology choose to enter the ministry. While most ministers choose to be employed at a church of certain religious affiliation, others choose to minister in hospitals or for worldwide relief agencies.
Degree Programs
Students have a choice to choose from various degree programs in theology such as: Master of theological studies (MTS), Master of divinity (MDiv), Master of theology (ThM), and doctor of philosophy (PhD). The students can also opt for programs like Bible studies, Christian Leadership, Religious Studies, Liturgical Studies, World Religions and World Church. The duration of the degree courses is between 2 -7 years. Universities offering theology courses There are several universities around the world that offer courses in theology. Some of the famous Varsities include: University of Auckland: Theology is available at postgraduate level at the University of Auckland. It involves advanced study in the areas of biblical studies, Christian thought and history, and practical theology. University of Oxford: The Faculty of Theology and Religion offers Masters' degrees in all major areas of Theology and the Study of Religion. Most subjects are available both as a Master of Studies and as a Master of Philosophy degree. The Toronto School of Theology (TST): TST and its member schools make up one of the largest ecumenical centres for theological education in the world. The seven member schools and the 1500 students enrolled within TST represent dozens of denominations and diverse theological and cultural traditions, creating unusually rich opportunities for theological conversation.
Courses online • • • • •
The University of Dallas School of Ministry Calvin Theological Seminary Saint Leo University The University of Notre Dame Welch College
We talk to Nathan Morrow, a theology graduate from Belfast, who now runs a student outreach called Koinonia in central London with the aim of bringing Christians from all different backgrounds together to live in community. What does one need to keep in mind while opting for this course? One needs to keep in mind that we can't know everything about God as studying theology allows us to grow further in our understanding of God, but he will continue to surprise us day by day. Also keep in mind this will put in to place everything in your life, how you look at the bible, how you look at the news, it will affect your thinking in every way. What are the major advantages of studying theology abroad? You get to see how other cultures interpret scripture, moral issues and God. It allows you to get a bigger understanding of the size of Christianity and how it looks around the world. You also get to learn from some of the most incredible professors who you may never have the chance to if you stay in your own country. What characteristics would you say are essential for a theology candidate for success in the field? A willingness to be stretched emotionally, spiritually and mentally. You need to enter into this knowing it's going to challenge your faith, lifestyle and knowledge. It's also important to realize that you need to be dedicated to your reading, both sides of the argument. Read books of theology you may not agree with, read books from other denominations and even other faiths. You have to be willing to step out of what you know and into a new space; otherwise, you
will not be allowing yourself to truly understand theology. What are the challenges you faced on graduating? The biggest challenge for me was going from being taught full time and constantly having discussions about God and theology, to working with people not really wanting to talk about it. You feel a lack of it and it challenges you because your mind is still thinking theologically but you need to try and choose when you release that. It also was a challenge because I found myself struggling with how I worshipped and prayed. I found myself critiquing church rather than participating, discussing and thinking about why everything was done rather than doing it myself. So the big challenges were the feeling of withdrawal symptoms from lectures, and having a theological heart for worship, rather than a pure heart. What are the future career prospects after one has completed this course? Career paths can appear to be very limited, but are actually very wide for a theology graduate. You can go into publishing of Christian books, many organizations need translators (studying biblical languages), many Christian charities look for theological graduates as they are encountering more and more educated opposition. You can pursue work in the teaching field. These are some of many career opportunities which you can pursue as a theology graduate. december 2015 Youth Incorporated 21

In conversation with Pallavi Srivastava How important is nutrition education in India and why? According to the data from the development agencies, India has the highest rate of undernourished children. The lack of knowledge in nutrition comes from the fact that people have always been discouraged from reading and understanding nutrition. It is important that the authorities and agencies focus more on education and making people understand how food we eat affects our health in a major way. If we have to improve the level of people, the health of people, the condition on India at the health level, the education and emphasis on nutrition has to improve. The authorities have to work more on initiating it from the base levels. Could you tell us a little about what a career in nutrition entails? What would you say were the major challenges you faced? Understanding that we are not a country where nutrition education and understanding is very popular, there are age old beliefs because of which people are not open to change. The biggest challenge for me was to make people understand how diet or food affects our body. To make them realize that not all the so called bad foods are that bad and all the termed super foods are always good. Moderation is the key. To make my

I would suggest that this course and field is not something which one can pursue or practice half- heartedly or with less knowledge or by just doing a certificate course. It is very necessary that one has a thorough knowledge of the field, understands food, nutrition and body type and various diseases and its complications. Its important to remember that we are serving the society and have a responsibility to hold on us, thus should take it very seriously and should increase the awareness and educate people of what they should eat and not blindly follow what others do. yi

The college year is coming to an end and you still haven’t figured out what your next step is going to be ? Fret not, LinkedIn is here to help you with campus placements 26 Youth Incorporated december 2015
e spend our time in college either with our books or with our friends, making the most of what we have right now, knowing that in a few months’ time it won’t be the same. You’re right, it won’t. But it isn’t only about not getting to meet you friends as often enough or having so much free time on your hands, it’s also about where you go from here. If you’re fortunate enough to know exactly where you’re headed, then it’s great, march on. But for those of you who spend hours browsing through the endless number of job vacancies, seldom finding one that would combine what you’ve studied and what you would love doing, here’s something new that would make your job easier. LinkedIn has stepped in to give a sigh of relief to freshers’ of India.
LinkedIn, world’s largest professional networking website operator, has decided to launch LinkedIn Placements app to offer a golden chance to freshly graduated kids to look and find their first job. LinkedIn has a user base of over 30 million in India, which makes it second largest market after the United States. LinkedIn Placements enable students to apply for jobs from anywhere and anytime and stay informed. We spoke to Priyanka Lunawat, a student of Welingkar Institute about her views of this initiative. She said,” With the launch of placements initiatives by the World’s largest professional network, LinkedIn, it would make students across India find their jobs easily. A student from anywhere can apply for jobs of his/her preference and can stay informed. The vast platform would not only facilitate placements season but would also help all students to attain their dream jobs.” Ganesan Venkatasubramanian, head of engineering, LinkedIn India, said, “Our conversations with students, placement officers and recruiters involved in campus placement point to an unmet need for efficiency and effectiveness. We are excited to start this journey to provide a locally developed solution that helps to improve the experience and processes for everyone involved in the entire campus recruitment ecosystem.”
We asked Anita Desai, who is a part of the career management cell at Welingkar Institute, the reason behind choosing to be a part of this collaboration. She said, “We were looking for such an opportunity which was presented to us by LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a platform where we can connect with a lot of new companies and also explore the possibilities of getting international internships / placements.” LinkedIn Placements is completely free of cost for users. With the help of it, students will be able to keep track of suitable jobs and apply accordingly. They will receive real time updates on their applications. Placement officers will be able to organize their data with greater efficiency and see the offers a student gets and recruiters can post jobs and also filter the candidate pool ahead of campus placements. When asked about the expectations from such an initiative, Anita said “The product is expected to make the entire process live, seamless with minimum manual intervention which will make the process more accurate and less time consuming.” While Priyanka added,” This collaboration would make things simpler for the students, the placement committee in each college and also different recruiters from companies. Often it becomes difficult for a student to land up with a job that he likes. This alliance would be fruitful to all
students giving them an opportunity to apply to some brilliant companies that have always been on their wish list.” Fourteen colleges across India have already enrolled for this pilot project. These include Asia-Pacific Institute of Management, Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, D. Y. Patil University, FMS Delhi, ITM group of institutions, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jain University, Kristu Jayanti College, MIT Institute of Design, Mount Carmel College, PESIT College, Presidency College, RVCE College and Welingkar College, Mumbai. As told to the Deccan Herald, Mr. Ganesan said ““The product will help students keep track of suitable jobs and apply accordingly. They will also receive real-time updates on their applications. It will also help students to connect with alumni groups and help them to build their professional networks. Considering the job scenario after college, Priyanka said, “The job scenario, especially after graduation isn’t very pleasing. Students after graduation look for work experience that adds value when they want to pursue Masters. However, finding a perfect fit becomes challenging. LinkedIn Placement Initiative would help students to aim for a particular job and also, would help recruiters to conquer a diverse talent pool.” yi

People spend their lives complaining about their jobs and how they were forced to become a corporate slave and how they should be doing what they love. But quite a few of these people, when they finally muster the courage to quit the job they hate, realise they have no idea what they would rather do.
Consider your financial status
Before we dwell into the soul searching part of it, let’s get over with the tough bit. What most ‘find your passion’ articles miss out on is one of the most important factors, ‘can you afford to find your passion?’ If you weren’t well off, you wouldn’t be reading this article to begin with but it’s not the current scenario, it’s the future we are looking at. On one hand your dream job will be satisfying as hell (read heaven) but it always comes with the disclaimer that it might not pay as well. But that’s part of the kick to it. So weigh your assets and secure your future financially for the rough road before you set off on it.
Explore yourself
Go on a solo trip or do something you have never done before. Find your fears, your strengths, your inhibitions and your aspirations. Not only will that help you sort what you enjoyed and what kind of things you liked doing but you will also discover areas of work and professions that you probably didn’t even know existed.
Consider your skills and talents
Consider your education or the education you This includes EVERYTHING you are might need good at. Be it delegating work to your younger siblings, faking small talk with annoying relatives or helping out in the kitchen;every small little thing you are known for around the house. If you are the one who plans hangouts for your gang or makes a big deal out of everyone’s birthday including your cat’s, cross reference your traits and abilities to a professional skill or in other words, how can you sell it?
Explore your options
Now that you know your likes and dislikes, as in what you would like to do and now that you are aware of your skills and abilities, as in what you can do, you need to check out your options. To find out about the types of professions and right kind of job opportunities you should not only skim through the internet but also talk to people who are in related fields, read up about successful people from your field and how they started out. After you are done with all the hunting and gathering, list your options and the jobs you would like to take up.
Before you start sending out your CV in bulk, refine it. Before you start your dream job, learn how to. Check out the educational qualification or experience you need for your dream job because if you rush into it without proper preparation you may face rejection which will confuse you as to whether this is the right choice or not. So take your time, get the additional knowledge that you need, spend a year or two to actually learn something useful before you start. If these steps didn’t prove helpful, then there is a fair chance that you could be cut out for a regular 9-5 job. It doesn’t sound cool in theory and in the movies people keep quitting these jobs to become travellers or actors, but in reality not everyone hates it. Quite a lot of people who are in boring sounding professions are actually quite satisfied especially so with the safety and security it provides. Also, if after following the steps above you could only list out abilities like chilling or sleeping for 18 hours straight, then you are just lazy and you should stick to your current job, it’s probably perfect for you. yi
Consider your interests and hobbies
While watching a movie did the cinematography catch your attention or did you critique the storyline? Do you like AIB, EIC and other comedians on stage or do you prefer wildlife documentaries on NatGeo? These are some of the questions you need to answer for yourself. Observe yourself and the things that catch your attention or keep you ticking. When you get bored, do you doodle or do you call up people and talk?

It all started with the invention of the wheel all those centuries ago. Transporting heavy objects from one place to another was a bug hassle for the caveman. And then one fine day, out of the blue, the wheel was invented. What started off as hand-pulled carts by man, journeyed through the discovery of animals being assigned with the task of the pulling (or was it more of an invention?), and has now reached cars as we see them today. And nostalgic as we are as a race, now that we have engines, we still use the term ‘horsepower’ when talking about the car’s strength and speed. That’s the thing about cars, though. They’ve been around for centuries, in one form or another, and they’ve made life so much simpler for the common man. Once a thing of luxury, cars have become more of a necessity today. And it is not uncommon to find a family owning more than one of the beloved vehicles.
The automotive industry in India is one of the largest automotive markets in the world. It was previously one of the fastest growing markets globally, but it is currently experiencing flat or negative growth rates. In 2009, India emerged as Asia's fourth largest exporter of passenger cars, behind Japan, South Korea, and Thailand, overtaking Thailand to become third in 2010. As of 2010, India was home to 40 million passenger vehicles. More than 3.7 million automotive vehicles were produced in India in 2010 (an increase of 33.9%), making India the second fastest growing automobile market in the world, after China. India's passenger car and commercial vehicle manufacturing industry recently overtook Brazil to become the sixth largest in the world, with an annual production of more than 3.9 million units in 2011.From 2011 to 2012, the industry grew 16-18%,. According to the Society of Indian
Automobile Manufacturers, annual vehicle sales are projected to increase to 4 million by 2015, not 5 million as previously projected. With such fabulous statistics, the prevalent car craze in the country only makes sense. And this is just talking from the financial aspect; the passion that goes behind the automobile industry is a whole different story. If you, like us, are enamoured by the age old tradition of automobiles, you are going to have a fantastic time perusing through this issue. Because a car is not just a car; it is an entire world encompassed in a moving black of metal. The mechanics of its engine, the creativity of its design, the strategy of its business and the humane aspect of making it environment-friendly; a car is all of it and more. In conversation with Prakash Gilatar, a mechanical engineer holding a master's degree in Transportation designing. He is currently a vehicle designer and has worked with Mahindra and Mahindra in the past
What is the national and international scope for automobile modification and product design? As the aspirations and demands of people for better cars & motorcycles rise in India, the scope for automobile design is bound to grow too. In fact, many auto companies based abroad are coming to India for designers. Indian auto companies have also set up studios. Besides, foreign companies hire Indian designers to modify their (foreign) car designs to suit Indian tastes. Automobile modification industry is rapidly growing in India, today owning a car or motorcycle which is unique and resembles your persona has become a style symbol and hence there is a huge business scope in the future. Can you give us an idea about the skills required to pursue modification and product design? Design and materials shape the world around us. But designers can do much more. Good designers always think from the customer point of view. They can think about how to improve aesthetic but also functionality of the product. Creative thinking on functions can improve the product concept. Design is a way
to communicate quality & expresses care and dedication to the product. Apart from these,a few basics skills are also required which will help to bring your idea in to the real world, such as sketching, rendering, Photoshop, 3D modelling software and understanding of manufacturing processes and materials. What are the current trends and highlights of the automobile design industry? The automotive industry is always on the move. It is a world of constant change and improvement where design is a sign of the times. Automotive Design is influenced by trends with often a much wider base than the world of products. They can reflect social developments and feelings around emancipation, sustainability or economics. There is a relation with fashion on the one hand and with technology on the other. There are short lived trends and trends of today that will continue long into the future. According to me, the following are a few trends which are driving the automotive industry crazy. Individuality: Today’s youth not only want ‘a’ car, they want ‘their’ car. Individually styled to
their taste as a means of personal expression. Individual, low volume, body shapes are enabled by modern production technology and platform based architectures. Further individualization & customization can be done by extensive option packages and individualized color and trim. Light Design & LED technology: Lights are very important styling elements on the exterior of a car. They started as true add-ons, mounted on a bracket, were then fluently integrated in the body shape and today stand out as true eye catchers dominating the front end. The design is no longer the shape of the body, but in the interior of the light the bulb, the lenses. Sculpted surfaces: Surfaces are no longer nicely curved and integrated to make a nice overall form. German design was traditionally characterized as ‘aus eimem Guss’ until Chris Bangle set BMW design upside down by creating complex surfaces with sharp lines and a mix of convex and concave shapes. Materials: Use of bio plastics is the new innovation. The technology to produce bio plastics started with degradable materials and has advanced to the point that is possible to make parts up to automotive standards. The future perspective is a widespread use of composites to deliver the substantial weight reduction cars are waiting for. The most promising in this respect is carbon fiber. yi december 2015 Youth Incorporated 35

So you're planning on starting a new car business or becoming a part of the automobile manufacturing industry? Well you're in luck. We have encompassed a list of everything you would need to know for the same The auto manufacturing industry is considered to be highly labor intensive and requiring major capital. The major costs for producing and selling automobiles include the following: Labor: While machines and robots are playing a greater role in manufacturing vehicles, there are still substantial labor costs in designing and engineering automobiles. Materials: Everything from steel, aluminum, dashboards, seats, tires, etc. are purchased from suppliers. Advertising: Each year automakers spend billions on print and broadcast advertising; furthermore, they spent large amounts of money on market research to anticipate consumer trends and preferences.
Auto parts manufacturing: The auto market is thought to be made primarily of automakers, but auto parts makes up another lucrative sector of the market. The major areas of auto parts manufacturing are: Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs): The big auto manufacturers do produce some of their own parts, but they can’t produce every part and component that goes into a new vehicle. Companies in this industry 36 Youth Incorporated december 2015
manufacture everything from door handles to seats. Replacement Parts Production and Distribution: These are the parts that are replaced after the purchase of a vehicle. Air filters, oil filters and replacement lights are examples of products from this area of the sector. Rubber Fabrication: This includes everything from tires, hoses, belts, etc. In the auto industry, a large proportion of revenue comes from selling automobiles. The parts market, however, is even more lucrative. For example, a new car might cost $18,000 to buy, but if you bought, from the automaker, all the parts needed to construct that car, it would cost 300400% more. Over and above the labor and material costs, there are other developments in the automobile industry that you must consider when analyzing an automobile company. Globalization, the tendency of world investment and businesses to move from national and domestic markets to a worldwide environment, is a huge factor affecting the auto market. More than ever, it is becoming easier for foreign
automakers to enter the markets of other countries.
Key Ratios/Terms Fleet Sales: Traditionally, these are high-volume sales designated to come from large companies and government agencies. These sales are almost always at discount prices. In the past several years, auto makers have been extending fleet sales to small businesses and other associations. Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate of Sales (SAAR): Most auto makers experience increased sales during the second quarter (April to June), and sales tend to be sluggish between November and January. For this reason, it is important to compare sales figures to the same period of the previous year. The adjustment factors are released each year by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Sales Reports: Many of the large auto makers release their preliminary sales figures from the previous month on a monthly basis. This can give you an indication of the current trends in the industry. The sales reports are released monthly. Watch out if sales inventory climbs significantly above 60 days worth. yi
What are the major challenges faced by an automobile dealership? For an automobile dealership, the cost of real estate and people intensive investments can be some key challenges. Rental cost of real estate especially in Metros is a big challenge. Training and retaining people is a big challenge , high import duty cost and registration cost and overall cost of doing business as well. Constantly changing norms, grey areas in regulations can be more of a hindrance to operations and can end up costing a partner some serious financial set backs.
We speak to well known auto enthusiast and entrepreneur, Mr. Mohan Mariwala who has been the driving force behind the well established Auto Hangar (I) Pvt. Ltd., which he set up in 1994
What is the difference between automobile franchisers and car dealership? Car dealerships largely focus on only the sales aspect of the vehicle. An automobile franchiser or partner focuses also on representing an image and identity as an extension to the parent brand/ manufacturer. It speaks the same language, tone and is also a reflection of the ethical practices of the partner.

Along with portals for clothes, gadgets and everything else under the sun, comes an online portal for automobiles. Who would've thought that we would browse through cars on the internet for reasons other than just checking out what's new What seemed like something we would never possibly do is now a reality. Not one or two, but there are a dozen online car portals active in our country today. You need not spend time making a trip to the showroom just to have a look at your options. You can now do that whilst sitting on your couch and ofcourse, with good Wi-Fi. Online car portals aren’t the only thing that’s making buying cars easier today. If you’ve always wanted to own a Mercedes or an Audi but the prices were kind of steep, well, now you can. Be it an Audi, Mercedes, Jaguar, Porsche or BMW, each of the cars being sold are subjected to a grueling series of quality and performance tests before being put up for sale.

Used Car Certification
Mercedes-Benz launched its new PreOwned car brand, ‘Mercedes-Benz Certified’ in India in December 2014 by the simultaneous inauguration of 12 new ‘Mercedes-Benz Certified’ outlets across India. The new brand will provide the pre-owned car customers an experience equivalent to a new car purchase, offering high-end facilities, infrastructure, tailor-made financing options, warranty and service packages. This new brand is designed specifically for the Indian market. Although the Indian market is seeing a growth in the purchase of pre-owned cars, this trend dates back to the 1990’s when Luxury marques Lexus and Mercedes-Benz were among the first to create CPO programs in the 1990s. Although buying a vehicle today is made more convenient thanks to development in technology, there are still a few pointers you need to keep in mind while making a purchase: 1. Check the pricing online or with the dealers on the car you intend to buy, used or new. Look at related variants to know about other options if you are willing to spend more or less. 2. You must determine how much you can put down in cash and plan for repayment of loans and/or insurance that you will incur by this purchase. 3. You must ensure that there are maintenance services for that car available at your location and that you are picking a model whose spare parts are easily available. 4. Ensure the paper work: It may be possible that you are lured into buying a stolen auto by a tempting price. This makes it important to ensure the paperwork is done properly before finalizing the deal. 5. Inspect the car: An individual may allow you to get the car checked from a mechanic but a dealer may not be that interested. In those cases don’t refrain from checking the car on your own. yi
We speak to Mr. Abhishek Kumar, the COO of Audi Mumbai South, on how the idea of certifying used cars and selling them came to light and how to be well equipped while making such a purchase Where did the idea to sell used certified cars stem from? As M square group dealers for Audi in Mumbai South, Nashik and Aurangabad, we started our operations in January 2013 and being non-industry were very excited with the new project, but in the span of one year we started realizing that there are a large number of customers who are aspiring to buy a luxury car but were not able to do so because of a tight budget and were not considering used cars as there was no guiding source for them to help select a car as per their need or were afraid of the after sales expense. That is when we realized the potential of this segment and started our Audi Approved Plus division where we sell cars with a certification and service plan and trained sales team who can guide them and help them buy their first luxury car with a warranty back up and finance options and giving them a complete peace of mind under one roof. How has the response to such an initiative been? The response for the luxury car market has been increasing with the
growing Indian economy and so for the used cars also we have been seeing an upward trend. Today, the Indian consumer has woken up to the positive value equation of pre-owned cars, and rightfully so. Pre-owned cars give higher flexibility and reach to prospective car owners, whether firsttime buyers or repeat, due to the price advantage they offer. The economical prices of pre-owned cars help all types of buyers. Other factor responsible for the increasing popularity of used cars is the multitude of quality choices available coupled with an increase in income. All this has created a situation where people want to upgrade their vehicles more frequently. The paradigm shift from buying new cars to used cars can be attributed to the increasing organization of the preowned car player. What should a customer look out for while buying a pre-used car? There are many things to look for when purchasing a used car but one important factor is to buy a car which is physically checked before making your final decision. Here, then, are a few general pointers on how to
physically check out a used car before you buy it. • Make sure that the car is on a level ground before checking it out. • Carefully check the paint job of the car, taking note of any rust spots, dents or scratches. • Check the trunk of the car to make sure it is still in good condition • Check the tires • Never buy a frame damaged car. • Check to make sure the airconditioning of the car is working well by turning it on. • For a car that has an on board computer, pay attention to the warnings right when you start the car or when you turn the key or the start button. • Check out the car’s service history which should give you some information regarding the performances, repairs, and problems of the car. Can you tell us a little about the process of selling a pre-owned car? Selling a pre-owned car is never a tough thing; the primary focus should always be on buying the right car at a right value which can be easily understood by going through the market trend. Someone who aspires to work in the pre-owned car market should always be updated with the market trend. In the automobile business there are certain products which are slow moving, so having the right knowledge of the products and the trend of their sale is very important. Another important thing is to understand the market where you operate and the needs and demands of the customer in that market. If an individual wants to sell his car directly, the most important thing other than the price, should be to identify the buyer first and make sure that the car does not go in the wrong hands as you can never judge anyone by their personality, you should always make sure that you complete the transfer formalities on your own on the buyers name and safeguard yourself from any future issues that may arise. yi december 2015 Youth Incorporated 39

Ever wondered how beautiful the vintage cars look while they leisurely ride along on a Sunday afternoon. Or how perfectly placed the Royal Enfield's look in clusters while they zoom past on a highway. Every couple of months or so, a car club or a motorcycle company announces the happening of a rally. Hundreds of enthusiasts gather at the given hour and cruise across town or between towns with their fellow riders Rallying itself can be traced back to the 1894 Paris–Rouen Horseless Carriage Competition. There are literally hundreds of rallies that you can enter around the world, many with unique qualifications and/ or rules. Some take place on closed courses, others on the open road. Some involve foot-to-the-floor speed, while others reward much slower and precise time-to-distance driving. Apart from the normal car and bike rallies that are witnessed the world over, there are some that will completely take you by surprise. Some of India’s most fascinating rallies are:
Great Arc The month-long Great Arc Vintage Car Rally sets off from Kochi, in the southern tip of India, and travels across 10 states and 3,106 miles to Missouri in the Himalayas. The route follows in the footsteps of the 19th century Great Arc Survey by William Lambton, a project intended to map a line from north to south India that would reveal the curvature of the earth and begin the task of accurately mapping the subcontinent. 42 Youth Incorporated december 2015

The 40-mile race is used to highlight the various issues affecting the blind and visually impaired in the country.
India-ASEAN Car Rally The India-ASEAN Car Rally is conceptualized with the aim to strengthen India’s relations with the South-Asian countries. The rally aims to promote trade and tourism between India and ASEAN. The first IndiaASEAN Car Rally was acknowledged by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh from Guwahati. The rally witnessed 250 participants from India as well as South-Asian countries in 60 vehicles and rallied across Assam, Nagaland and Manipur before entering Myanmar.

In conversation with Shreesha Rao, owner of a Royal Enfield, an avid bike enthusiast and also a participant of bike rallies across town
What do you like most about the Enfield Riders rally that takes place in the country? It is the diversity of people that you get to witness at these rallies. Geographically you’ll find riders from almost all parts of India most of them from Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Pune, Mumbai, Bengaluru & Chennai also, everyone finds time out of their hectic schedules and commitments to do what they love the best, that is to ride and explore. Personally, I have met riders who professionally are investment bankers, chartered accountants, techies, game designers, doctors and students, so you feel the diversity I am talking about and all of them come to a single platform ,all enthusiastic about the ride. What attracted you to the Royal Enfield? Right from my childhood I’ve been fascinated about two wheelers. Thanks to my folks, my first ride was when I was 3, on a BMX. Going down memory lane, I remember when we used to travel, I would sit on the suitcase and drag it for the whole length of Pune Station thinking it was my Yamaha. It was a rage back then. My dad owned a Yezdi Classic Twin Silencer which I could never get a hold on since I was too young. Thus, given the initiation, owning a Royal Enfield was a natural choice. A combination of the old school feel, raw power & thump makes it a winner. What are the usual number of participants in such rallies and how diverse are they? Usually rides on tougher terrains would see lesser number of participants but this depends majorly on the organizers so you would expect to see about 40 to 50 riders, whereas, destination events attract a lot of participant numbers going into a couple of thousands. The only advice I would give a bike enthusiast is to enjoy and ride safe.
In conversation with Rishad Kundanmal, who runs the Kundanmal Car Service Station where he looks after and maintains high end marquees and also restores Vintage Cars to their former glory What got you interested in retro wheels? Ever since I can remember I used to be crazy about cars. When I was 7 years old I found my dad’s 1939 Austin 8 and told him I wanted to fix it up. At first he informed me that the car was never lost, but was just parked away. He then laughed and encouraged me to go ahead and to restore the car with the help of some of his technicians. What are the skills required for someone dealing with vintage cars and which are the most popular ones? More than skills alone, one needs to have a passion for these beauties along with knowledge and understanding of how and why a particular system was placed on the car and as to how these cars have evolved over time. It is difficult to specify which would be the most popular brands, but since India was under the British for almost 200 years, consequently most of the cars in India are of British heritage. Do you participate in the vintage car rallies in the city? Tell us alittle about your experience. Participating in Vintage runs smoothens my nerves and keeps me at peace. More than just Vintage and Classic rallies a group of my friends all of whom share the same interest, meet almost every Sunday at 7 am for coffee and breakfast to sit and discuss the various aspects of each ones cars. A group of 30 then jump into our respective cars and drive in a convoy 70 to 90 miles on that Sunday morning. The morning run has become so successful from the time it first started with 4 cars doing the runs that has now expanded to 30 cars where each one of us has a great time cruising across the country. yi december 2015 Youth Incorporated 43

With air pollution quickly becoming one of the biggest banes in our current environment, the time for the green revolution to hit the automobile industry is now A green vehicle is a road motor vehicle that produces less harmful impacts to the environment than comparable conventional internal combustion engine vehicles running on gasoline or diesel, or one that uses certain alternative fuels. Green vehicles can be powered by alternative fuels and advanced vehicle technologies and include hybrid electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, battery electric vehicles, compressed-air vehicles, hydrogen and fuel-cell vehicles, neat ethanol vehicles, flexible-fuel vehicles, natural gas vehicles, clean diesel vehicles, and some sources also include vehicles using blends of biodiesel and ethanol fuel or gasohol. As part of their contribution to sustainable transport, these vehicles reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to energy independence by reducing oil imports. An environmental analysis extends beyond just the operating efficiency and emissions. A life-cycle assessment involves production and post-use considerations. design is more important than a focus on a single factor such as energy efficiency.
Improving conventional cars: A conventional vehicle can become a greener vehicle by mixing in renewable fuels or using less carbon intensive fossil fuel. Typical gasoline-powered cars can tolerate up to 10% ethanol. Brazil manufactured cars that run on neat ethanol, though there were discontinued. Another available option is a flexible-fuel vehicle which allows any blend of gasoline and ethanol, up to 85% in North America and Europe, and up to 100% in Brazil. Another existing option is to convert a conventional gasoline-powered to allow the alternative use of CNG. Pakistan, Argentina, Brazil, Iran, India, Italy, and China have the largest fleets of natural gas vehicles in the world.
Benefits: Environmental: Vehicle emissions contribute to the increasing
concentration of gases linked to climate change. In order of significance, the principal greenhouse gases associated with road transport are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Of the total greenhouse gas emissions from transport, over 85% are due to CO2 emissions from road vehicles. The transport sector is the fastest growing source of greenhouse gases. Health: Vehicle pollutants have been linked to human ill health including the incidence of respiratory and cardiopulmonary disease and lung cancer. According to the World Health Organisation, up to 13,000 deaths per year among children (aged 0–4 years) across Europe are directly attributable to outdoor pollution. The organization estimates that if pollution levels were returned to within EU limits, more than 5,000 of these lives could be saved each year. Monetary: Hybrid taxi fleet operators have also reported that reduced fuel consumption saves them thousands of dollars per year. yi
the Government’s FAME (Faster Adoption & Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) incentive surely is an encouragement, but we still have a long way to go. Since we are the only EV manufacturer in India, some raw materials and components of our car e2o are imported. A major part of it is the battery that powers the car. This in turn makes the cost of the car high in a price sensitive market like India. However, we do have a lot more acceptance today than we had a few years back.

As a student at the University of Michigan, the founder of Reva, Mr. Chetan Maini had the opportunity to be part of a team that raced a solar powered car across the United States. They also took the car on to drive across Australia. The idea of using a vehicle powered by green energy to cross an entire continent first led him to start thinking about bringing an electric car to India. focus on manufacturing, demand creation, technology and charging infrastructure. What are the major challenges faced while manufacturing such a car? The Electric Vehicle (EV) technology is new and it’s going through a learning curve. In the initial stages getting financial support for products like ours was a big challenge. Today
Do you think these cars have the potential to replace the modern day cars? I think we are at the cusp of a huge shift in terms of how consumers look at personal mobility. There are consumers who believe that EVs are the right thing because of the economic and ecological advantage they offer. There is a lot happening around the world as far as electric vehicles are concerned and consumers are reading about it. With the announcement and implementation of the FAME scheme, we foresee substantial growth taking place in the Indian EV Industry soon. yi
How has the market for ecofriendly cars grown in recent years? Globally, nations and markets with strong government policy support have seen a significant uptake of electric vehicles. answer answer
Astronomy is necessarily an observational science rather than an experimental one. The starting point for a career in astronomy would be plus two with physics, chemistry and mathematics after class 10th. You can follow that up with BE/ BTech and then PhD in astronomy. Employment opportunities could be in research institutes and government organizations as research scientists , or as university faculty especially in physics departments. Experienced astronomers may be offered jobs in industry for their expertise in computer programming, and handling data and their experience with sophisticated astronomical instrumentation.

With the advent of Indian fusion music taking over the music scene in the country, we are more than thrilled about this advancement. Madhura Sansare gets on with the new trend to tell you all there is to know about Indian fusion music

lobalisation is the norm of today’s times. Apart from taking over our digital lives, it is also slowly advancing upon the music industry. And we could not be happier about this change. Almost on the verge of extinction, Indian classical music is making a sure shot comeback with many young musicians taking it over and mixing it up with a variety of more popular genres of music and creating some fabulous Indian fusion numbers for younger audiences. World music is a musical category encompassing many different styles of music from around the globe, which includes many genres of non-Western music including folk music, ethnic music, traditional music, indigenous music, neotraditional music, and music where more than one cultural tradition, such as when ethnic music and Western popular music intermingle. World music’s inclusive nature and elasticity as a musical category pose obstacles to a universal definition, but its ethic of interest in
50 Youth Incorporated december 2015
the culturally exotic is encapsulated in Roots magazine’s description of the genre as “local music from out there”.The term was popularized in the 1980s as a marketing category for non-Western traditional music. Globalization has facilitated the expansion of world music’s audiences and scope. It has grown to include hybrid subgenres such as world fusion, global fusion, ethnic fusionand worldbeat. Fusion is not a very old trend in Indian music. Fusion trend is said to have begun with Ali Akbar Khan’s 1955 performance in the United States. Indian fusion music came into being with rock and roll fusions with Indian music in the 1960s and 1970s. But it was limited to Europe and Europe and North America. For some time the stage of Indian fusion music was taken by Pt Ravi Shankar, the Sitar maestro. Pt Ravi Shankar began fusing jazz with Indian traditions along with Bud Shank, a jazz musician. Soon the trend was imitated by many popular
European and American music exponents. In the year 1965, George Harrison played the song, “Norwegian wood” on the Sitar. Another famous Jazz expert, Miles Davis recorded and performed with the likes of Khalil Bal Krishna, Bihari Sharma, and Badal Roy. Some other prominent Western artists like the Grateful Dead, Incredible String Band, the Rolling Stones, the Move and Traffic soon integrated Indian influences and instruments and developed the trend of fusion. The Mahavishnu Orchestra of John McLaughlin pursued fusion with great integrity and authenticity in the mid-1970s. In the process John joined forces with L. Shankar, Zakir Hussain and others. The trend of fusion took over the Indian-British artists in the late 1980s, who fused Indian and Western traditions. In the new millennium, a new trend of fusing Indian Film and Bhangra music has started in America. Many of the mainstream artists have taken inspiration from Bollywood movies and worked with Indian artists. yi
Known for incorporating Indian classical tunes into theme songs of some of the most popular western TV shows and movies to come up with an almost ethereal musical arrangement, The Indian Jam Project has been recognised by legends like Michael Price and Mark Gatiss. We talk to the founder and arranger of this conceptually revolutionary band, Tushar Lal, about his journey so far. How did you come up with the idea for the Indian Jam Project? I always wanted to incorporate Indian techniques of composition into western pieces. I have been influenced by both since I was a kid, so it wasn’t too hard for me to start with something like the Indian Jam Project. Game of Thrones was one of my favourite TV series and I loved its theme song, so I started off with that.
as an Indianised arrangement. Because I need to think with a different perspective to put it all together! Otherwise for all of us, performing live is also challenging, but also a lot of fun!
Why did you choose the Indian Jam Project as your name? Haha! It’s not the best name! Actually, Michael Price tweeted about the Game of Thrones video, thinking Indian Jam is the name of the band, while it was meant to be interpreted like it’s a ‘jam session’. But then we kind of got famous with the name, so Indian Jam Project it was!
What, according to you is the future of Indian music and international music? International music seems to be doing pretty great, but Indian Classical music definitely needs to be respected more than it is right now. The saddest part is, Indian Classical music has received tremendous love and response from all over the world but not so much from our own country. We went too Bollywood and forgot that we own something so brilliant. And to make things worse, bad EDM is stepping in. I can’t compare music and call a particular genre better, but Indian Classical music definitely needs
What were some of the challenges you faced? For me, one of the major challenges is definitely writing the arrangement - writing parts for all the instruments which are supposed to be put together
Which has been your most popular composition till date? Definitely, the Harry Potter Music Tribute
to be out there more than it is right now. Why did you choose to showcase fusion music with the theme songs of popular western TV series and movies specifically? Composition wise they are quite good, with just the right amount of complexity and they’ve got a catchy element because they need to be showcased on television. Seemed like a pretty good option. Do you perform live on stage as well? Where can we catch you next? Yes! We’re performing at Mood Indigo, IIT Mumbai this December. Michael Price, Mark Gatiss and Karsh Kale’s have shown appreciation for your work. How did it happen? What was your reaction? It was very, very overwhelming. All the members were extremely happy. These are some pretty big musicians and producers. We couldn’t believe it! It encouraged all of us even more to go further with this project. yi december 2015 Youth Incorporated 51

We get in conversation with Maati Baani, a world music band formed by Kartik Shah and Nirali Kartik which routinely collaborates with musicians from all over the world to create some fantastically cultural music videos. How did you come up with the idea for the Maati Baani? Maati Baani literally means “The language of earth”. As musicians we did not want to keep the compositions to ourselves. It is our love for different music from various cultures and lands that brought us together. We always wanted our music to be collaborative and not limited to any one genre. It gives us an opportunity to explore world music and sounds that are still rooted in tradition. The core idea behind Maati Baani is to keep Indian Classical music as a protagonist among various other sounds, cultures, languages and voices of the world. What were some of the challenges you faced? As interesting as it is, collaborating with different artists around the globe is not at all an easy task. Even once the artist has expressed full enthusiasm, sometimes it doesn’t work out because their schedules might be busy during the timeframe in which we need their material. Once they are on board, 52 Youth Incorporated december 2015
another challenge is to match their schedules and timelines with ours. The other major challenge is that we have a huge database from the artists. Editing and shuffling their parts to blend it in and make it sound effortless can be termed as a challenge but in the end, this is what we strive to achieve and overcoming these challenges is what we enjoy the most. What, according to you is the future of Indian and international music? In these times of turmoil, music is a healing touch. Today, the power of technology has opened more doors, connecting some immensely talented musicians to co-create music. What seemed impossible a few years ago has now become possible! MaatiBaani’s new series is one good example where we have co-created music through technology. Can you tell us a little more about your new music season? Our new series is one of a kind. We are
taking global music to another level and coming up with a digital musical series done entirely through online collaboration. It features more than 70 artists across 20 countries. The 1st season is set to be released in Dec, 2015 and we are working with the post-production for the same, setting minor details in place and assembling the songs. We bet it’ll be worth the wait. Which were some of the most exciting collaborations for you personally? It has to be Rang Rangiya which was an Indo-Pak collaboration released on the Independence Day of both the nations in 2014. Historically, we were a same country and we still are, only separated by borders. India and Pakistan has always shared a strained relationship, so what could have been better than a musical offering of love, peace and friendship. We believe, music is the most celebrated art form all over the world so why not use it for the greater good. yi
Legendary percussionist Taufiq Qureshi and his son Shikhar Naad talk to us about their love for percussion and the legacy of their prestigious family.
Son to the legendary Ustab Alla Rakha and brother to Ustad Zakir Hussain, Taufiq Qureshi can certainly be called the pioneer of djembe in India. Being rooted in his background of Indian classical music, he diversified completely by introducing the African instrument to India and opening up the Indian audiences, even the non-tabla listeners, to his father’s incomparable legacy. He is now passing on his own legacy to his son, Shikhar Naad, who is an exceptional djembe player himself. We talk to this inspirational father-son duo about their exceptional heritage and their love for percussion. It has been a long career for you, Mr. Qureshi. What would you say are your favourite highlights of your journey so far? One of the highlights of my journey was the release of RHYDHUN in 2000 which was a landmark album for me because it pivoted me right top there among some well known percussionists in the world. Apart from the many concerts I did through my career, the first time I did my
Djembe solo, which is an African instrument on which I defined the repertoire of all my father’s knowledge of the tabla. The first time I performed such a solo was in 2009 at the Shyamukananda Hall, where I played in front of a stalwart of artists. It was a defining point in my career. Another highlight was during one of my visits to the U.S when I was playing the djembe and after my performance a lot of percussionists who were djembe and congo players came up to me and appreciated my work and asked me about the technique I was using. How did you come up with the idea for Mumbai Stamp? When I was returning back from one of my visits to Singapore, on my way home I got the strong stench that Mumbai offers and saw the garbage filled roads. I went back to my students and asked them to go to their area, collect any garbage cans that produce sound and make music. At that time I was working on my album called Bombay Fever and I wanted to do something that would showcase the spirit of Mumbai which I composed
using all the kachra we collected in the studio and that’s how Mumbai Stamp was born in 2006. The main aspect of Mumbai Stamp is to work on trash which is not bought but collected. Mr. Naad, what according to you is the best thing about performing with your father? The best thing about working with my father is that there’s always something new to learn, something new to experience and look forward to and that’s something you don’t get with many people. There aren’t many challenges as such, but I always try to please him and hope that he likes my work. It’s not at all stressful as he lets his students be what they want to and he lets us experiment so there’s no pressure. What can we look forward to in the future from the two of you as a fatherson duo? We are focusing on releasing an album solely on our djembe playing, with the repertoire of the tabla. We will continue performing live as well. yi

A – Adventure Don’t let the thirst for doing new things die out. You don’t necessarily need to jump off a cliff with them, but small things like long car drives to new places or just trying new cuisines together will help keep the spark in the relationship.
F – Food There’s so much to discover with regards to food out there. If you can cook, go ahead and make them their favorite meal once in a while or maybe something totally out of the usual menu. If not, don’t fret, there are tons of outlets for every palate out there.
B – Build on You’ve got to keep working on your relationship day after day. It is not a one-time investment that takes care of itself. Keep feeding it.
G – Gratitude Be grateful for your partner. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have someone to share their lives with. So, compliment them all the time. Tell them how lucky you are to have them in your life and don’t ever take them for granted.
C – Curiosity Whether you’ve been together a few weeks or for a couple of years, never stop being curious about each other. Always want to know more and do more. Keep questioning and remember the smallest things about them. D – Dress up You may wear pyjamas to a dinner and they’ll love you anyway. Even if you’ve reached this stage, make it a point to dress up for them once in a while, they’ll dig it. E – Ent husiasm You’ll may not be on the same page about most things most times, but try to be enthusiastic about what the other likes even if you’re not particularly interested.
H – Hike There are beautiful places in the city with breathtaking views at all times of the day. Climb a hill and see the world out there. If neither of you’ll fancy hiking, you’ll can also take a long walk along the beach or have a picnic at the local park. I – Innovate Try coming up with new things that are solely yours. It could be a meal, or a concoction of a drink or maybe a story line or a cartoon. Inspire each other and blend in your thoughts to create something that belongs to just the two of you.
J – Joke Life is too short to not have a sense of humor. There will be times when you need to be serious but every moment together shouldn’t be spent that way. Have a few inside jokes and joke around with each other. K – Kiss Kiss their forehead, their cheek, their nose and everything in between. Kiss a lot. Show them you love them, you want them, you need them; either sloppily or with just a peck. L – Listen Listen to them talk. Listen to every little detail even when you’re just back home after a really tiring day. Even when you don’t have a clue about what they’re going on about. Even when you’re dying to say something. First, listen. M – Mingle Don’t exclude yourselves from the outside world. Hang out with your partners friends, take him/her out with yours. Don’t get caught up in your own bubble all the time. It’s also always healthier to maintain your own personal relationships with your friends. Let them go out with theirs and you hang out with your own. N – Nickname Come up with a cute nickname for your significant other, apart from the usual baby, sweetheart and darling. It could be with regards to something quirky you like about them. You don’t necessarily need to use it in public. It can just be something just the two of you know about. Like a secret.
P – Photographs You don’t need to take pictures of every single thing you’ll do, although that is fine as well. But if you’re not the regular selfie-taker, pose for a few. Months later these very photos will get you smiling. Even though you won’t forget, it won’t harm to save some memories on film. Q – Question And I don’t mean interrogate suspiciously. But ask them about their day, their favorite drink, what they dreamt about. It could be anything. Questioning shows that you’re really interested in knowing all about them, even the tiniest details. R – Respect We’re all human, we’re wired differently and no matter how well you click with someone, there’s bound to be differences. Remember the ‘agree to disagree’ formula at all times. S – Sing It could be at home, in the car or at a karaoke bar; sing your hearts out when you hear a familiar line. And maybe when you’ll share a moment while belting out lyrics, you might find your couple song! T – Travel Pick a weekend, pack your bags and head out of town. Go as far as that train can take you. Indulge in nature, discover yourself and each other.
U – Underst and Sometimes you just need to get that things won’t turn out the way you expected and you need to be fine with that, however much you wanted for it to happen. V – Vocalize If something’s bothering you, don’t bottle it up, just talk about it. Don’t expect the other to figure things out themselves. Not everyone is a mind reader. W – Write Be it a poem, a quote, a note or a letter; write them something. It’s the easiest way to portray your emotions and it’ll brighten up their day as well. X – Ex Leave jealousy aside, it’s a real waste of an emotion. Focus on your present. Your partner is with you now and that is all that matters. Y – Yield When you’re having one of those never-ceasing arguments, try to yield. Let your pride take the back seat. It’s worth it. Z – Zealous No matter how old you get or how long you’ll have been together, don’t forget the youthfulness and enthusiasm you had at the start of your relationship. Have the same zest and passion for each other through time and tide.
O – Obsess Fuss over them. Fuss over every mood, every phase, everything they like or dislike. Don’t be super-obsessive that it gets borderline annoying, but show them that what they like or how they’re feeling really matters to you.

Countdown
#RECAP2015 It’s another year come and gone, and as we congratulate ourselves on successfully going through another year, we get nostalgic as well. Take a ride back with us, as we rewind through some of the most important moments in the year that has gone past, and let us relive and review the year of 2015.
The year of bans For some reason, 2015 was the year our Indian government got very interested with what we put in our mouths. From a state-wide beef ban in Maharashtra (which led to Kerela mocking the ban too by celebrating a day of beef where succulent preparations of the controversial meat were cooked and given out in mass quantities on the streets), to banning the staple favourite Maggi noodles; we can safely call 2015 the year of bans. Thank God Maggi’s back though; we wouldn’t know what to do without it. But all in all, Nestle clearly had an eventful year with the almost nation-wide ban and the comeback, don’t you think? AIB Roast The AIB Knockout sparked quite a controversy in March. While Aamir Khan and Twinkle Khanna voiced their opinions against the contents of the video, most others have been against the attack on AIB. It was hilarious to watch how most people missed out on the point of a roast, which is that it’s ‘insult comedy’. All in all, AIB tried really hard to introduce India to a new form of comedy only to have to issue an open apology for their hard work. Maybe we haven’t grown up as much as we would like to believe by 2015. India becomes the hub for western music videos We are still lamenting over the time when Chris Martin randomly ended up in a pub in Delhi, partying with AIB. Oh no we love the fact that he was here, but no one knew, and we weren’t prepared, and that’s not cool! Funny thing, that wasn’t the only time he was here. Coldplay was spotted a few weeks afterwards in Mumbai shooting for their new music video. Turns out, India caught the eye of quite a few western music artistes as the perfect place for their music videos, with Major Lazer and DJ Snake also choosing to shoot the music video for extremely popular song, Lean On in Karjat. India’s Daughter If a documentary based on an inhumane crime is considered just as criminally offensive as the crime itself, BBC’s documentary film India’s Daughter stands guilty as charged. It caused an uproar when the Indian government feverishly tried to take down all sources of the video because “excerpts of the interview as published are highly offensive and have already created a situation of tension and fear among women in society”. In Shakespearean tongue, ‘to censor or not to censor, that is the question.’
56 Youth Incorporated december 2015
Charlie Hebdo massacre January saw one of the most inhumane attacks in recent history. Two brothers, Saïd and Chérif Kouachi forced their way into the offices of the French satirical weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo in an terror attack that killed 11. However, the newspaper took only a week to bounce back from the attack, hitting the market with a rejuvenated fervour against terrorism. They reportedly published nearly five million copies of their subsequent edition; people had to wait for over an hour to get the magazine, and many stories all over France had to put up a ‘sold out’ sign soon after they ran out of copies. Is that a show of resilience or chutzpah? Celebrities got on Dubsmash Chances are you’re one of the millions of people who have fallen victim to the addictiveness and utter ridiculousness of Dubsmash that’s consistently entertaining us since it was launched. But what we really love is how the addictiveness took over tinsel town just as well as it did over the masses. Hollywood and Bollywood celebrities alike got sucked into the dub craze, and it’s amazing to watch. We reached Pluto Adding another feather to NASA’s cap was its spacecraft New Horizon’s maiden trip to the dwarf planet Pluto. Hurtling towards the farthermost planet in the galaxy, the spacecraft treated us mere mortal earthlings with one of the most gloriously detailed pictures of the planet ever. Talk about reaching new heights this year, right?
Sunder Pichai became the CEO of Google While Indians were still reeling (or rather, trolling) from Bobby Jindal’s refusal to acknowledge his Indian connection, Sunder Pichai came out as the light at the end of the tunnel this September. This Chennai educated man, now appointed as the CEO of Google, not only affectionately recalled his Indianness but also made India proud on an international platform. We are also proud of Indra Nooyi and Satya Nadella for their business prowess. The Ashley Madison website scandal Online community was aghast as it was cruelly exposed to the issue of privacy substantiated by the data breach from Ashley Madison, an online dating service for people who are married. With personal information such as email addresses and phone numbers of users leaked online, users were once again obligated to acknowledge the ever burgeoning threat to internet privacy. Moralistically, we understand the whole ‘they deserved it’ claim, but if personal information can be leaked that easily, will we ever be safe in our ever-growing digital world? The Zuckerburg-Modi after effects Following the Prime Minister’s revolutionary launch of Digital India, he met up with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerburg, and that interview kept the nation glued to their TV screens. But the after effects of that meeting were quite scary. Zuckerburg spoke about something called Internet.org, which, when read between the lines, was heavily against net neutrality. People added a tricolour tint to their Facebook profile pictures after the controversial meet, and there was a huge debacle about how adding the tricolour tint meant supporting against net neutrality. Thankfully, this claim was based on a viral image of a code, which was later identified as a coding error. december 2015 Youth Incorporated 57

The IoT
Imagine a super packed Monday morning. You have a meeting at 11 am in one of the most densely populated suburbs of the city, where traffic snarls are the order of the day. You need to wake up at 6 am and work on that presentation you vowed to finish last weekend (the same weekend you have no memory of). On the way to the meeting you need to pick up your newest suit from the dry cleaners whilst coordinating directions with your phone since you haven’t been to the meeting place before. All of this and just one of you, too much to ask isn’t it? Let’s ease out that scenario a little bit; imagine this - your meeting has been placed on your Google calendar the week before and your car has access to this, it simply calculates the shortest route from home to the dry cleaners and then to the meeting place and helps you avoid traffic infested routes. Your alarm clock is set for 6 am and as soon as it is 6, your favorite song pours out of the music system to lilt you from your slumber, your coffee maker brews coffee just the way you like it, your printer at home knows that it is low on ink and since you need to print handouts for the meeting today, it already ordered cartridges 3 days in advance!
58 Youth Incorporated December 2015
The IoT has been the next new rage as internet connected portable devices (primarily smartphones) eased everyday work and communication habits. The IoT can be said to work on one basic assumption, “if something can be connected, it will be connected”. Providing internet connectivity to home appliances or other devices, enabling them to send/ receive data to make lives simpler is the raison d'être of the IoT. According to reports by analyst firm Gartner, by 2020, 26 billion devices would have joined together to form the IoT, a massive amount of information would then be available that can be analyzed and broken down to further understand human consumption/sleep/behavioral patterns. The application of the IoT is not limited to home appliances. Think of a jet turbine being able to communicate directly with ATC during flights and inform them of any critical failures/ fuel supplies without needing sustained attention from the pilots, especially during long haul flights! The IoT is still in its nascent stages and presents opportunities and impacts that can’t be quantified today, yet its power can be felt in the way it governs our lives! Best of luck for that meeting. yi

Google says "Peace is a colloquialism that refers to a state of being mentally or spiritually at peace, with enough knowledge and understanding to keep oneself strong in the face of discord or stress.” With such a complicated statement confusing his mind, Basit Parker takes a journey all through the city, trying to find some meaning to the concept of peace in the city. “For any mother in the world, seeing her child jumping with joy is the most peaceful essence to her soul”, quotes Misses Thara Nair. For this four year old Ishaan, the tunes of Lungi Dance initiate his every little bone to a twist and turn performance. Watching a child swaying with smile is an experience that can lit up a light of peace in any body’s heart.
After meeting Sana Shaikh, I realized peace has so many various forms. For this Automobile Engineer, her definition of peace is the smooth unruffled sound of an engine which she hears after every little piece is placed to perfection. “I love that moment, when you are on a long car ride and you completely zone out. You forget your troubles and everything around you. You are focused on that one thing, you are content, and everything seems so peaceful,” is what this exceptionally distinct feminine had to say.
There's something to be said about the peace that you can achieve from helping others. For this young woman, its all about combining her love for children with her passion for helping those in need. And what better than volunteering to achieve that? If you have never had the pleasure of volunteering for a cause in your life, take heed. There's something revolutionary about it. And it is sure to change who you are as a person. So go help other people. Sure they're the ones in need of it, but what you gain out of volunteering is far more gratifying than what you give them.

When I met Binoy Bhatt, I remembered a quote that I once read. It said, ‘Mind is like water. When agitated, it is difficult to see what lies beneath. When settled, the answers come to surface and the purpose of life becomes clear.’ “I see to that after an interval of at least 15-20 days, I remove some time from my busy Life and go out for a small weekend. I search for places with a water source. A dip in water refreshes me and brings content to my heart. I can’t define it to you in words how peaceful I feel from inside.”

For this six year old school going kid, peace has a complete new definition. His little bike is what his life is all about. For him peace is all about waking up in the morning and hearing his engines go vroom vroom. “Every night before going to bed, I sit with my bikes and talk to them. I can’t tell you how beautiful the conversation is,” said Master Raheesh Khatri.

For the times you face a creative block and can’t seem to do much about it, Pearl Mathias brings you a few things you could do to get right back on track
F
or those of you who park yourselves on the sidelines and ogle at the amazing things being done day after day by the people around you, all the while thinking that you weren’t granted the ‘creative gene’ and you’re okay with it; let me tell you that there’s no such thing. Creativity is mysterious and unexplainable. It hasn’t been endowed to a selected few but it’s a force that we can individually or collectively work on. Creativity stems from within you. It’s what drives the process of making the world simpler, better and happier. Although, more often than not one gets caught up in a mental rut and nothing productive comes forth no matter how much you try. For trying times like those, here are a few ways to get that mind working and improve your creative thinking.
Do more than just look at the things around you. Observe everything, take it in. Really notice the colors on a person’s dress or the way someone smiles. How slowly the clouds pass through the sky or what people are really trying to say when they talk. Engage in the environment, don’t let anything be lost on you. There are possibilities everywhere, in the smallest details. Get out of your head and into what the world has to offer.
Ask a lot of questions and be eager to know what’s happening around you.
Don’t just drift through life but really get to know why things are the way they are. Be curious enough to take risks and challenge yourself with every new task. The world is a big place, there will always be more to know and do than you already are. In the words of Ray Bradbury, “Don't think. Thinking is the enemy of creativity. It's self-conscious, and anything selfconscious is lousy. You can't try to do things. You simply must do things.”
It could be a piece of writing or a painting or a new sport, whatever interests you, go do it now. Learn a few sentences in a foreign language or just talk to a stranger. It may not necessarily be a big thing, do it anyway. Once you make this a habit, your creativity starts bubbling and you’ll find yourself doing things you never thought you would be remotely interested in.
Edward De Bono said, “The need to be right all the time is the biggest barrier to new ideas.”You can’t expect every idea you think of to be a success. You need to be ready to accept failure as soon as you conceptualize something.
You can’t get bitter because the world doesn’t see the genius in your plan or if there’s someone better out there. You have to train yourself to not take failure personally.
Once in a while take some time out from your routine week. Artists are typically stereotyped as loners, although this isn’t the case. Solitude often brings out the creative genius in you. It allows you time to get in touch with yourself and reflect on your inner creative voice. "In order to be open to creativity, one must have the capacity for constructive use of solitude. One must overcome the fear of being alone," wrote the American existential psychologist Rollo May.
We often talk about passion in reference to the one thing that keeps us going, whether it's travelling or writing or sketching. It could also be more than just the one we’ve been fixated on. Develop the need to constantly learn and you’ll never cease to grow. Try your hand at whatever you get a chance to do and do it with enthusiasm and passion. Make time for work that drives you.Your work won’t turn out any better than when you’re loving what you’re doing. yi december 2015 Youth Incorporated 65

“I’m Just Not That Into You” If you’re a lady, then you’re going to be hit on, mostly unwontedly, at some point in your life. Nisha Jamvwal tells you how to turn a guy down without being too harsh.
66 Youth Incorporated december 2015
IT’S JUST A BOY THING I've just come back from a delightful visit to Turkey. Istanbul is beautiful, the people so hospitable, and the men - they can quite leave a lady with an identity crises, where she feels like she's Angelina Jolie or uncomfortably that she's being seen as easy game. Funny place for a woman, isn’t it? On the one hand she wants to look hot and on the other, she would prefer not to be the object of unwanted attention or pointed appraisal of her ‘assets’. They often come on strong and sweet like their famous coffee. But this predilection is not an isolated Turkish thing or Italian or some other. It’s something a lady can encounter in our cities as much. Even enduringly married ladies meet up with uncalled for advances. Much so in our ‘modern’ urban society. Modern can have ambivalent shades. It leaves me wondering if the times have become so liberal or virtues more elastic. Even friends husbands seem inclined towards indiscretions. So how does a lady deal with this "modern" thing? How does she convey that advances are not welcome? My friend Bella is a no-nonsense person. She says she clearly tells any "Johnny" who gets leery with a drink and loosens his inhibitions "Tcha! Man! Stop this nonsense! Come-on behave yourself!" That's fine as far as it goes, but often a drink need not be the catalyst, the modus quite subtle and the situation delicate. Such a direct response can create humiliation or at least bruised egos. You don't want that and it seems uncalled for where nothing is as obvious as to make a pointed comment. Or he's your or your partner's work colleague or ‘close friend’. HOW TO AVERT IT Most simple is to gloss over the innuendos and pretend your IQ just does not extend to such intelligent heights. But many times this leads to greater pursuance and persistence. There comes a point where it becomes necessary to draw the line and convey
your lack of interest in a way that avoids a scene or an awkward situation. It becomes clear that it is clearly not friendship but something more overtly uncomfortable in the mind of the man. You can try zooming in the wife, if there is one, and shower her with friendly attention. It may be a safety valve. Or bring in your partner to diffuse the 'over friendliness’. But it’s not always at a gathering of folks. It can be a work-place, a client or an associate at work, some one-toone encounter or indeed situations that need the same dexterity as our diplomat designate to the USA. There are those who go wringing their hands and ‘what-to-do-ing’. Or then those who fly into self-righteous umbrage and vent out the ‘injury to their good name’. Others go confiding the offense to "close friends" and create a chain of Chinesewhispers! It’s apparent that these responses leave inflammable consequences with undesirable repercussions. Constructively, one analyses the matter as having two or three considerations. You think “Well, God has made me presentable, and attentions come with the label" and you side-track the innuendos by determinedly keeping the chatter friendly and light. Or you graciously respond to them as compliments. If needed you drop friendly hints that you are committed and without saying it out aloud, indicate that "harmless" flirtation is not your scene or any friendly change of subject that works. If the onslaught is stronger, and if the person's status is necessity-based or value-based, give it all the props to maintain esteem. Indicate you value the association or that you both have such a good work arrangement, or you value the equation with the person and you understand he is paying you a great compliment "and let's not complicate matters by intrusions that are likely to dent a good thing" and so on. A LITTLE LESS RESERVED A more direct approach is to mention that you are not interested. And if
some other suggestion, like dinner or a trip is mentioned, persist with “I am not interested’. Calm, composed and dignified. Not necessary to be angry or react sharply. So long as it is polite take as a compliment than getting huffy and self-righteous. Remember to keep a tone of bon homie in place. Of course, each one knows her situation best and how to evaluate the approaches and measures to take. I don’t recommend mentioning your relationship status, because if a person is single it does not mean they are automatically available. A person has to be interested in the first place. As I see it, if the matter is truly insulting in its implications, especially if the advances include any groping or touching ,go ahead, take advantage of the privacy and render that tight slap with "I think that conveys what I think and I'm sure you don't need to speak of it to me or anyone else.”The point I’m making is that you have to decide how far it is harmless and where it is entering a space of unsavoury. Whatever be the case, you are the decision maker of where you want to take this and it is not necessary to be engaged to another man in order to make it clear that you do not wish to have anything to do with the man hitting on you. Learn to say ‘no’ politely and it will take you far in life, believe me. My parting tip for you is this, prepare your come back incase of that come-on happens from a guy you’re not into. Being prepared makes you cool, in control of the situation and the one that will steer it to where she wishes it to go. Tell yourself what you will say and how you will say it and voila, you’re the winner. It's altogether another story if you are amenable to such scenarios, as a friend, attractive too and married, told me "Why don't you pass him on to me, Nish”. Modern times. yi Read more of Nisha’s point of view at www.nishajamvwal.blogspot.in, tweet to her @nishjamvwal and write to her at nishajamvwal@gmail.com december 2015 Youth Incorporated 67

Party Ready The 31st of December brings with it the eve to a new year and the pressure to look your best. So be it a big bash or a cosy family get together, we have got you covered Big Party With brands like F21, ZARA and now H&M India (opening in Delhi) dictating the urban party scene, outfits are limiting when it comes to uniqueness. But your hair and makeup is something you can really get creative with. For a bold too-cool-to-care look, you can amp up the natural texture of your hair by back brushing or blow drying at odd angles while flipping your hair. Smoky eyes are advised, if not recommended. You can pair electric blue or snowy white eyeliner with your regular smoky eyed routine, to cut out of the generic look. You may need a fine layer of foundation to look good for the 12 O’clock picture, especially if you plan on dancing the year away. A loud colour for the lips is almost complimentary to a big bash, so you can don a bright red or peppy pink to complete your look. Small get together with friends A small get together is a big deal. You can’t be overdressed but you can’t look like you didn’t care enough to dress up for this. So the best way is to go for a pretend-natural look, like beach waves for your hair. A fun girly hairdo requires a fun girly lip colour like baby pink or orange and keeping in sync with the casual yet classy look try to execute a winged eye liner, but if that’s too much of rocket science for you, you can simply add extra volume to the lashes (mascara with curling brush) and keep the eyeliner simplistic. As for your skin tone, a very negligible layer of foundation is advised, which you must apply such that it blends with your complexion to pull off the I-woke-up-like-this look.
Family dinner Every affair with the family calls for you to look innocent and cute while disguising your ability to drain a beer bottle in 40 seconds or other abilities along those lines. And nothing spells cute like face framing braids, pinned to the side. It is something that compliments both long and short hair and takes minimal effort. A pastel shade of lip colour or a swipe of gloss will be complimentary to your hairdo, while minimal or no foundation is the way to go. Although you may put on a fresh layer of BB cream to freshen the charm of your skin. Subtle eye makeup will do wonders for this look, but you can add grace to your eyes with a light dab of a funky eye shadow. Office party Office parties are fun because people get to see a side of you that is way different from your regular 9 to 5 self, but you are never sure on how much of that side you should show. For a professional yet casual look, French twist a loose bun and use bobby pins to sparingly anchor the hair to scalp. Contrast your regular eye makeup with voluminous strokes or go for a doe eyed look to create a eased up appearance. Highlight cheeks and lips with the same crème based colour to add elegance. yi

What started out as rip-off to Big Brother, has now gone on to become a mega event in itself for the Indian audiences. What technically was supposed to be a group of celebrities, living together, facing challenges and getting evicted in the process is actually a group of people who need to be google-d to be recognised, either hating living together or getting married on sets, making the worst out of challenges and brewing high voltage drama before finally getting evicted. And because of that or inspite of that, now in its 9th season, Bigg Boss has a viewership of 5.2 million.

The Beatles - Across The Universe It probably all started when the Beatles visited India and shot one of their mega hits in blend with the Indian tunes. Who knew, that the Indian ethnic music could compliment the Beatles’ signature style of composition. Not that they wouldn’t have gone down in history without this number on their bio, but they were the first of their kind to dwell in this territory, which probably added to the glory.
This 2003 hit single, which won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording, has sourced inspiration from India in ways unidentifiable. The strings background score and the beat to the Indian instrumental count are in a sensual sync with the sexier than sexy stewardess, that is Britney Spears. The song isn’t shot in or based on, India, but definitely brings in the atmosphere with the music.
Imogen Heap feat. Vishal/Shekhar – Minds Without Fear
For this song, singer and songwriter Imogen Heap did not just take inspiration from India, but took a little of India as well. Shot in the Pink City, this album features Jaipur in all fairness along with the dynamic duo, Vishal Shekhar. The song was a major hit of the time, and much appreciated by critics. It provides a beautiful blend of indo-western music that is unimaginably complimentary to one another.O maenu kendi na na na”
Major Lazer & DJ Snake feat MO — Lean On
And of course, who can forget, one of the most streamed songs this year, number four on Billboard Top 100 and number two on UK Singles Chart. Be it an Indian shaadi or the fresher’s party, this song and the dance moves from the music video, have truly made a place for itself. The grandeur of Palace of Karjat, Maharashtra and the trippy mix of authentic Indian tunes duly helped bookmark Major Lazer’s place in history.
Selena Gomez’s comeback to the music scene after a brief break, this song began with Tabla beats and Punjabi lyrics before morphing into Selena’s power packed vocals. Gomez came with the whole package as she performed a mujra inspired dance routine complete with a bindi on her forehead, at the MTV Music Awards. Not only was the song a major hit worldwide, but also set Selena a class apart from her contemporaries while breaking her free of a Disney alumnus image.

A Christmas Carol
A Christmas classic, with its simplistic storyline is a must watch on the Christmas, especially if you are feeling a little low. The story of George Bailey’s suicidal moment on Christmas eve and his realisation of how bad things could have been if he was never born, with the help of his guardian angel will prove to be your guardian angel and infect you with the right kind of Christmas spirit. The movie is a timeless classic filled with morals and emotions you probably didn’t know existed. Best enjoyed with lots of cake.
If it’s Christmas, you have to watch a grumpy old Ebenezer Scrooge learn the importance of the festival in this spooky and magical Christmas fairytale by Charles Dickens. The story is an enjoyable narrative of the visit of the past, present and future ghost to set the grumpy Scrooge straight. It is something to watch with the family, your girlfriend or if you are working then you can even hold an office screening and teach your Scrooge (read boss) a lesson. The story has been adapted multiple times, so whatever your taste, a 1951 classic or a Scrooge McDuck version, it is available out there.
Miracle On 34th Street
The concept of Santa Claus is just as believable as a kid as it is unbelievable as an adult. This Christmas movie brings forth that concept when a department store Santa claims to be the real Santa Claus and the consequences that follow. It’s a light heart flick with a little magic, a pinch of miracle and a little food for thought. Whether you are a believer or a cynic this movie is bound to strike the right chord.
The Nightmare before Christmas
The Santa Clause
When a dad accidentally kills a man in a Santa suit, he enters the ‘Santa Clause’ where he must fulfil Santa’s duty before next Christmas. As any of us, he believes it to be a dream and doesn’t follow up only to gain weight and grow an unstoppable white beard, in short, ‘become Santa’ despite all his efforts. This is not your regular Christmas merriment movie, this dwells deeper with a more practical backdrop to a magical story.
72 Youth Incorporated December 2015
Something to be enjoyed with kids and younger siblings and to bring alive your kid-ish side, this story follows Jack Skellington’s, the king of Halloweentown, evil plan to take over Christmas and kidnap Santa. The plot line is interesting as it brings in a refreshing touch by introducing a little Halloween scare in the Christmas cheer. If you think you are too old for this, this movie will change just that. Best enjoyed with a cosy blanket and chattering family members all around.

The Mission of War
A
20 year old Bilal Siddiqi makes his author debut with this gripping crime thriller. They say the dedication is one of the key factors that gives you an insight into the writer and Bilal wrote this one out beautifully. The book was very well researched, I must say, along with the help of the US and Indian intelligence agents and war correspondents and written under the guidance of crime writer S. Hussain Zaidi. The book revolves around Kabir Anand, an ex-RAW agent who had to forcefully leave the organization after a disastrous mission in Balochistan in 2006, and who was forcefully brought back to carry out another mission in Balochistan. This is his time to avenge not just his defamation, but also the death of his mentor and father figure – Sadiq Sheikh. Despite a number of characters and several location changes the book moves with a fast speed and smooth understanding. There is also a lovely hint of love and yes, death. So all in all, it was definitely a good read and crime-thriller readers should pick this one up for sure.
In conversation with Bilal Siddiqi
Who or what inspired you to write this book so early on? Around the time I had turned 17, I had a sudden growing interest in the covert world of espionage. And it
wasn't a James Bond film that drew me to this newfound interest of mine. It was, in fact, the entire talk of jihad and Islamic extremism that plagued every newspaper. Being a Muslim, I wanted to understand why I was so different from them, when ideally, we both were supposed to believe in the same set of principles? One thing led to another, and I had suddenly read a lot more than anyone else my age probably had about the subject, finding myself disagreeing with the ideology that had tweaked itself conveniently to something it was never meant to be. I wanted to create a character worth his salt, that wouldn't seem like a 'me too' of a Bond or a Bourne, but could stand his own. And what’s more, he was going to be set in the real world dealing with what could well be real situations. Are you currently working someplace or completely focused on your next book ? I was writing the book while I was still in college (St. Xaviers). I was also (and still am) working at Red Chillies Entertainment. So juggling all of it was a little difficult. I used to go to college in the morning, then work and then write in the night into the wee hours of the morning. I used to enjoy it thoroughly, despite it being extremely hectic. I don't like taking time off. I like keeping myself busy. It makes me feel better than just lazing around! Can you give us a glimpse into your next work? My next work is very different from this one. It is non-fiction and I have co-written it with Emraan Hashmi. It's about Emraan's four year old son's battle with cancer. It deals with interesting anecdotes from his life and also is very informative about cancer itself. yi
