GRAND FINAL

Moonta v Cougars for flag Report by

“Half-back Flanker” The CY Cougars get another crack at Moonta after defeating the Southern Eagles in Saturday’s preliminary final in Wallaroo. Big Scott Mumford started like a house on fire with a couple of crumbing goals. But, like many houses on fire, he crumbled to the ground soon after, limping almost all the way off before being stretchered for the final few metres in one of the more “I guess that was necessary?” moments of the season. He would not return, and neither would the Eagles’ hopes of victory.

Suddenly the Southerners lacked a deep target, settling instead for long-range shots which missed the mark. The Cougars were not on their A game but finally got the ball going their way and goaled instantly. The amount of effort required for that quick goal, compared with the slog it took for the Eagles to even manage a few points, did not bode well for the rest of the game. The Eagles tired and the Cougars lifted. Corey Graham, no longer required to stand Mumford, moved forward where he could better use his size and strong hands, even if his kicking boots were still back in Maitland. Lukas Kangur was dominant and capped his Saturday off by winning the Mail Medal from vote-magnet Shane Jordan and Pasky’s Tyson Wait. I thought Alek Kangur might have collected more votes but Lukas’s exceptional season was rewarded handsomely. Some quick tips for grand final day before I go: people to bring in their own drinks in imaginative ways and maybe half to make it past security; 200-odd people sitting inside the fence despite the volunteer boundary patrollers; at least 20 surnames to be mispronounced during the medal presentations; the local cop on duty deciding they’d better patrol the Minlaton Oval for most of the arvo; a couple of scruffs; three or four steak sangas; plenty of cans; helpful advice for the umpires; only one winner in each game.

early on this season and it will pay handsome dividends in front of the home crowd this weekend. If anyone can give the Crows trouble, a side full of youth and run might do the trick. But at the end of the day this contest should end without any surprises as Nick Clift, Jamie Kemp and their teammates crow the victory song. At the final siren... Crows by five goals. SENIOR COLTS Bute/Paskeville v Southern Eagles Neither of these sides finished top but, what do you know, the college boys have come home for the finals and it’s a whole different ball game. Bute/Pasky just defeated the Eagles in the first final and this could be the closest contest of the entire day. For the Eagles, medallist Tom Robinson will lead the way; for Bute/Pasky it will be Lachlan Jones. Both will have plenty of help. At the final siren... Bute/Paskeville by a point. JUNIOR COLTS Southern Eagles v Bute/Paskeville The Eagles were far too good for Bute/Paskeville a fortnight ago, led by Charlie Hoile, Koby Poulton and full forward Kooper Rivers. Bute/Pasky was without star player Jedd Thomson for that contest and, with him back in the mix, kept the CMS Crows goalless in the prelim. I expect this to be a cracking contest, but the Southerners should still get the win. At the final siren... Southern Eagles by four goals.

A GRADE Moonta v CY Cougars This will be a replay of the final from two years ago, right down to small details such as Matt Carey being doubtful but considering trying to play on one leg. It worked out well for the Cougars in 2016 but this time around M Carey is even more hobbled. Him aside, the Moonta defenders will be busy containing Alex Greenslade and probably Corey Graham, as well as smaller goal sneaks like Jesse Potts. Harry Vick and Craig Taylor have been outstanding mopping up in the Dees’ backlines and will look to continue that form. In ruck Henry Daniel and Jono Ross should break even, so it will be up to the Kangur boys to get on top of Dylan Mansell and Joel Foster. Ciaran Hollingworth-Hughes had some uncharacteristic fumbles against the Eagles but I expect him to be on top of his game across half back for the Cougars this week as he tries to nullify the influence of Lachlan Slack, Cam Miller and Josh Ramsey. Jason Carey will also be crucial in the backlines along with Jon Dutschke. If both sides were fully healthy I’d have trouble picking a winner here, but that’s just not the case so I’m taking the favourites. At the final siren... Moonta by three goals. Coaches prepare for final battle A

fter injuries plagued Moonta in the middle of the year, the Demons bounced back to take out the second semifinal against the Cougars to go straight through to the grand final. Playing coach Josh Ramsey said the Dees have had a really good season, culminating in the opportunity which now presents itself. “Through the middle part Josh Ramsey of the year we had some Moonta A grade coach injuries which affected the balance of the team, and with the competition so tight we lost three out of five games,” Ramsey said. “Since this period, we have been able to regain our form and the boys have bounced back really well from a disappointing middle part of the year which has led to a super back half of the season.” Ramsey said the Dees have a clear focus on their set-ups offensively and defensively. “We won’t change from anything we have done throughout the year as our systems have proven to stand up at this level,” Ramsey said. “The key will be our pressure when we don’t have the ball and being clean when we have it. “The majority of the time it’s just the team that does the basics better that wins.” Moonta Football Club had some drama behind the scenes this year, including the resignation of

C

president Tom Prokopec. Ramsey said the club was fortunate to have a resilient playing group and committee under the circumstances. “Whilst the outside noise was there, the group continued to do what they do best and that was work hard during the week and then perform on Saturdays,” Ramsey said. “The committee dealt with the change extremely well to the point where there was really no impact on the group. “Tom Prokopec bought some great things to the club including night footy and upon his resignation, Grant Keleher was installed as our president and is doing a terrific job in the role. “We are a really proud footy club and our resilience and determination from all involved has given us a chance to add to our premiership tally.” Ramsey said there is no doubt the CY Cougars are a talented team led by a smart coaching group. “The Cougars are a super outfit and this has shown by them taking out the minor premiership comfortably and winning through to Saturday’s grand final,” Ramsey said. “Their midfield led by the Kangur brothers (Alek and Lukas) and Henry Daniel in ruck is no doubt crucial to them, the run created from (Ciaran) Hollingworth-Hughes is dangerous and (Jesse) Potts in their front half will also cause us some headaches.” Ramsey said to win a grand final a team needs an even spread of contributors. “The key for us will be our mid-tier players who continue to play great roles for us,” Ramsey said. “Guys like Lucas Gordon, Jordan Porteous, Troy Colliver, Sam Watson and Brodie Maitland will be vital to our result.”

Y Cougars spent all season remaining on top of the ladder, only to be rattled by injuries ahead of their finals campaign. Playing coach Alek Kangur said the team had stuck together throughout the year considering there were forced Alek Kangur changes most CY Cougars A grade coach weeks. “We were getting hard-fought wins on the board in close games which should give the lads confidence for finals-like pressure,” Kangur said. “Our main focus is to win the one-on-one battles and give our forwards every opportunity to get a score on the board.” Kangur said all his players would have to contribute, and that would be the key to winning the grand final on Saturday. “Our best footy is a result of all 21 players contributing and playing their role,” he said. Kangur said the team had learned a lot from its match against Moonta in the second semifinal, a 27-point loss. “Moonta wants to play a fast, aggressive game style,” Kangur said.

“We want to focus on not letting the ball spill out to their runners and keep our focus and aggression at the ball. “We’ll need to stop the likes of (Jono) Ross who provides their midfield with first use and (Lachlan) Slack who has a habit of bobbing up and kicking goals against us. “We will back our ruckman Henry Daniel with support from Jed Woolford and our backline to work as a team to shut down all the Moonta forwards.” Kangur said his side would need to be better in front of goal than it was last time out against Moonta. “We need to put on scoreboard pressure and keep the ball in our forward half, this will give us the best opportunity to score as well as restrict Moonta’s run from the half back,” he said. Kangur said while the team is strong it would be without Adam Ryan, Josh Carey, Ben Rigney, Josh Dutchke and Chris Langford. “Matt Carey is a chance to play this weekend, pending a fitness test at training,” he said. Kangur said everyone was excited to be a part of the grand final this weekend. “It is a reward for effort from not just the players but all involved in the club,” he said. “Grand final appearances don’t come around very often so it’s an exciting time. “Preparation for the game will be no different to any other game — training as a group and getting around each other as well as recovering as well as possible for Saturday.”

PREVIEW

The battle of the best two teams Report by

“Aunty Flo” Wow, it seems like we only just began the season but now it’s whizzed past us and we find ourselves at grand final week. Congratulations to all sides which have the honour of playing this Saturday. The A grade finals series has been a ripper with all games decided by six goals or less. I did think we were going to have our first overtime final at Wallaroo but Pasky hung on to win by one goal. This was a great game with Pasky having a lead of 10 at one stage before Moonta fought back. Lana Bagshaw was definitely Pasky’s best at GA and gave Moonta GD Adele Keleher a tough day at the office. Tamara Lodge worked extra hard to move the ball into Moonta’s attacking third and was well supported by young Claudia Hatcher in centre. Pasky GK Leanne Pridham got her hands on some timely intercepts and rebounds in the last quarter to give her a side a chance to defend its title. Crows and Pasky battled it out in the B grade and, while Crows won by 11 goals, it was great display of netball.

Unfortunately Pasky was not able to sink its shots as successfully as its opposition and Crows GK Hannah Short did a very good job to put them under pressure and cause plenty of turnovers. A GRADE CMS Crows v Paskeville I’m sure the rematch of last year’s grand final lists will be as spectacular as last year’s grand final. Both sides will take the court looking a little different but they both deserve the right to play. Pasky is very experienced in finals which helped it when things got tough in the preliminary final. But Crows are a lot younger and will run all day. The big question is will Felicity Kemp return from a calf injury? Young Tyla Cook stepped up in the semi and did a great job but was also a strong cog in the B grade win. Lana Kaesler and Christine Nicholson shared the WA role for Pasky on the weekend and I will be interested to see who coach Fiona Bussenschutt starts against Crows WD Lana Bennett. Pasky goalies will need to be accurate as the McSkimming sisters will jump at the opportunity to rebound. Bronwyn Farrow and Tasmyn Biddell are young and will need to settle early to combat the pressure

from defenders Leanne Pridham and Amie Price. I’d love to sit on the fence and call a draw, but I won’t — I will highly recommend popping up on the hill to watch at 3.25pm. At the final whistle... Pasky by one goal. B GRADE Southern Eagles v CMS Crows The battle of the bottom enders. Crows will still be seething they lost to the Eagles in the semifinal but will be better for the extra hit out. Eagles’ young GA Gemma Rudduck was a major contributor to her side’s last win and Crows GD Rebecca Harris will need to slow her down. Crows will also be hoping Cook can slot back into her WA role instead of filling a gap in the A grade. However, without an E or C grade team in the grand final, Crows could possibly fill the spot with Isabella Varricchio. Eagles defenders Emma Goldsmith and Rikki Barlow-Gill can run all day and did a great job applying pressure on Crows goalies Jacqui Baillie and Leah McDonnell last time. At the final whistle... Eagles by two goals. C GRADE Southern Eagles v Bute It is great to see Bute make the grand final and I am sure the players are very

excited to have another crack at Eagles after their semifinal loss. Association runner-up best and fairest Leanne Goldsmith has plenty of finals experience for Eagles and will be an important wheel in the centre court, as well as a steadying influence for young goalies Charli McIntoshWhitehouse and Sarah Webster-Spratt. Association best and fairest Karlie Bettess will be trying to slow down the Eagles goalies at GD. I don’t think the margin will be as big as the semifinal but Bute GA Liz Humphries will need to be a big contributor to a change in results and will have her work cut out against Jess Kammerman and Anissa Thompson. At the final whistle... Eagles by 10 goals. D GRADE Paskeville v CMS Crows Pasky won the semifinal by four goals and enjoyed the week off while Crows played well to defeat Wallaroo. A nasty injury to Mel Reppin could be costly if she is not fit for this week though. Congratulations to Pasky GS Belinda Wood and GA Corinne Bussenschutt on winning the association best and fairest and runner-up respectively. The pair bring a wealth of experience to the court and,

along with Leanne Wait, Pasky has plenty of depth and finals experience. Kristen Wilson and Kathy Larsson will have a great tussle in the centre. Unless Crows are able to slip Gaye Jolly in for Reppin I can’t see them winning. At the final whistle... Pasky by five goals. E GRADE Moonta v CY Cougars These two sides have had a great hit out each time they have faced each other this season. Moonta gave Cougars a fair lesson in the semifinal but it will be a lot closer in the big one. At the final whistle... Moonta by two goals. F GRADE CY Cougars v Moonta This match features a battle between good up and coming netballers, best and fairest Brooke Irlam, Moonta, and runnerup Havanah Smith, of Cougars. At the final whistle... Cougars by three goals. G GRADE Kadina v Bute Bute had a win in round one and Kadina was the winner in round two. Bute is coming off a great game in the preliminary final though and should win. At the final whistle... Bute by four goals.

hat a year it has been. We have obviously achieved what we set out to do in preseason, which was to give ourselves an opportunity to compete for a premiership in the A grade competition. We have had some fun along the way and I have certainly enjoyed the club atmosphere we have been able to continue this year. Going into game day, our main focus will be to enjoy the opportunity and the moment we have worked so hard to compete in. Our team does not rely on just one or two players, but everyone

from the bench to on the court being able to execute their job. Paskeville is strong all over the court with such experience and depth. Fiona (Bussenschutt) and Lana (Bagshaw) provide a huge amount of leadership and accuracy in the attack line. Then there is Jade (Daniel) in the centre with her cool and calm delivery into the circle, and then look at the defensive line up, the list goes on! Our only way to win on Saturday is for us to play our game and ensure everyone executes their job for the team.

ur season was slow to start with us not settling our team until halfway through, but we have a great bunch of girls, we have a lot of fun and have been slowly building towards the big dance. Our focus will be on enjoying the occasion. Grand finals are such a special day and we really want to be able to take it all in and step up to the challenge. We will be focused on executing our game plan to the best of our abilities. In grand finals there is no room for any passengers. Each and every one of our team members

plays a vital role — we all know our roles and will be ready to perform on the day. Importantly, we have leaders all over the court, so we can support and encourage each other. The Crows are a slick unit and are coached beautifully. The McSkimming sisters (Lauren and Melissa) make you earn everything. Lana (Benentt), Tegan (Young) and Felicity (Kemp) are quick and tight in the midcourt and Tasmyn (Biddell) and Bronwyn (Farrow) shoot accurately. We know it’ll take four (or five!) quarters of top-quality netball to get over the line.
