GRAND FINAL…
Moonta captain Tyler Andrews and coach Luke Pridham hold the premiership shield aloft after their win against the CMS Crows.

Hearts beat true for Demon delight

Perhaps it was inevitable Moonta would avenge its 2021 grand final heartbreak with an emphatic 34-point grand final win against culprit CMS Crows.

Perhaps it was the culmination of 12 months of hard work to get back to that position again, or a mixture of both.

From the first bounce, the talented Demons never looked in danger of letting Crows into the contest.

Players like eventual best on ground medallist Malcolm Karpany pushed the Demons forward.

Crows looked every bit a team which had played an extra-time thriller the week before and dealt with personnel changes, both chosen and out of their control.

They got the first of the day when Adam Jolly stepped up to take a good mark 20 metres out before going back to kick the set shot.

Moonta was on the board 10 minutes later when Tyler Andrews dribbled a ball through from the top of the goal square after Dylan Mansell pumped it in deep from the wing.

He got the next one soon after from tight up against the boundary line as Moonta opened a fivepoint lead.

Karpany took time while in possession on the outer-side wing and delivered with supreme accuracy to Aidan Turner who had led into a hole inside forward 50 for another Demon major.

Moonta was the recipient of a free kick 55 metres out from goal and, when it was decided Matt

MOONTA v CMS CROWS

Altmann would have the chance, he delivered.

CMS started the second quarter with a major, coming through Todd Hoyle from outside 50 but, from then on, Moonta dominated play.

A 20-minute deadlock was broken when Turner broke from a tackle 50 metres out from goal, delivering to the square where Patrick Fry took a strong one-onone mark and kicked the set shot.

Crows dominated the last 10 minutes of the quarter, but couldn’t add any goals to their already slim tally, going into halftime three goals down.

Nick Prokopec was first sighted in the first minute of the third quarter when he took a mark from a quick Matt Appleton kick out of the pack to then kick an easy goal.

Crows moved the competition’s leading goalkicker Ben Edwards up the ground and into defence to shake things up as Moonta continued to push.

Mansell won a free kick for holding the ball directly in front of goal and made no mistake.

It was a goal they deserved after

dominating the majority of the quarter.

The Crows lacked creativity traversing the middle of the ground but for that credit must go to Moonta, who were choking them up at every opportunity.

Lachlan Everett took the ball inside 50 to start the last quarter where Altmann marked and kicked the first for the term.

Crows were finally on the board again when Edwards won a free kick for hanging on and kicked the goal from short range, but that was their final say.

Crows’ Riley Newbold had a positive day in the ruck and Jake Cook the same out wide, but for a side which has qualified for seven grand finals in the past decade, it was an uncharacteristic performance.

Moonta faithful flooded the outer side wing after the final siren, capping off a thoroughly impressive season overcoming injury and illness.

While Karpany was best-onground, Appleton was impressive in the middle of the ground and Mansell was a strong presence off half back.

against a competitive Central Yorke Cougars under 17s outfit, while Dogs co-captain Domenic Bagnato took home best afield honours.

After a huge day of grand final action at Bute, that’s all she wrote.

A massive congratulations must go to Copper Coast teams Moonta, Kadina and Wallaroo for premiership triumphs throughout the day.

As predicted, the young Bulldogs got proceedings underway with massive wins in the junior and senior colts games.

Co-captain Hunter Wellgreen stood out in the under 14s with a best-on-ground performance to go with his three-goal haul.

Likewise, Blake Miller slotted four majors

Kadina was helped by some inaccurate Southern Eagles kicking early, and stood up when it mattered — the experienced Bloods mixed with a sprinkle of youth was too strong for their Eagle rivals.

In the main event, CMS fought hard but it was just unfortunate the breezy weather affected their usually dominant kicking game.

Moonta rebounded well from half back all day, led by ever-reliable Malcolm Karpany, to pull away with a 34-point win.

Here’s to a solid off-season and we’ll be back again next year.

Kadina easy flag winners

Kadina’s dominance was proven good at the final hurdle, claiming the premiership with a 32-point win against a gallant Southern Eagles.

In the end, it was Kadina’s poise and efficiency which helped it through.

Despite having only two extra scoring shots, the Bloods always looked more threatening going inside 50.

The first quarter was an arm wrestle which only produced one goal (to Kadina), the very first chance taken by Daniel McDonald from 15 metres out after a crossed ball from Ty Kirkwood.

Southern Eagles had much of the ball for the remainder of the quarter, but couldn’t make good of their opportunities, adding just four points to their tally.

Ruckmen Jono Lee (Kadina) and Jack Stuart (Eagles) had already opened an intriguing battle between themselves, one which Lee would ultimately win, taking out the best-on-ground medal.

McDonald won a free kick for front-on contact 45 metres from goal and nailed the major within the first minute of the second quarter for Kadina.

Just moments later, he pounced on a smothered ball and snapped into the waiting arms of Toby Glasson who kicked the goal from 15 metres out as Kadina started to take ascendency.

The Eagles missed chances through George Bond, Joseph Murdock, Caleb Rivers and Michael Beelitz while at the

other end Jacob Williams was able to dribble through another for Kadina.

Koby Poulton found himself some space and finally, with a confidence booster so important for the Eagles, wobbled one through from 35 out.

However, Kadina got the immediate reply as it took the ball out the middle and Williams pinched it from an opponent’s hands, kicking a simple low goal from short range.

Poulton was hit up again for the Eagles and proved he had the composure by finding Beelitz in the goal square who went back and snapped another.

Taj Kleinig ran into an open goal to start the second half, his side rebounding and spreading well off halfback.

Nathan Perkins won a free kick directly in front and made no mistake for the Bloods, as they looked unlikely to ever let the game go from here.

Matthew Drewer kicked a set shot for the Eagles after winning a free kick but, as the rain came down thereafter, they couldn’t make the most of any further opportunities they had.

Williams dribbled through the first of the last quarter for Kadina after reading a ball off a pack best before Josh Lawson, who had been a standout all day, snapped a sealer from straight in front.

Beelitz got a late one for the Eagles from the goal square following an after-the-play free kick but it was well and truly overshadowed by another Williams goal, a Bailey McNicholl goal and the premiership glory which followed.

While Lee was crowned best-onground, he was ably assisted around the ground by fellow standouts Williams, Isaac Glasgow and Brett Jericho who stood up well in defence while under the pump.

Senior colts supremacy sits with Wallaroo

They don’t call it the premiership quarter for nothing, with Wallaroo using it wisely to set up grand final triumph against Central Yorke Cougars by 55 points.

The Bulldogs led by seven points at halftime after a tight first half, but blew it wide open following purple patches from Jack Mumford (three goals) and Blake Miller (four) either side of threequarter time.

The contest began with a heavy downpour of rain and the trading of goals between the teams, including a Kalvyn Karpany set shot following a free kick in front of goal for Cougars.

Wallaroo got the next when Miller kept his feet in a marking contest in the goal square to pounce on the ball and snap a goal.

Kane Elliott-Karpany flew high but couldn’t bring down the mark inside 50 for Cougars as both teams were wasteful with their forward 50 entries.

Elliott-Karpany played a crucial role in the next Cougars goal, picking the ball up cleanly at his feet and delivering to full forward where Karpany took a good oneon-one mark and kicked the goal.

Brad Barnes had been really solid on half back for Central Yorke and Domenic Bagnato had been a reliable force for Wallaroo throughout much of the ground, eventually taking home the best on ground award.

He bobbed up next for a set shot goal, putting his side back in front with the last goal for the quarter.

Zak Cuthill also had a brilliant quarter for Wallaroo, cutting off balls through the middle of the ground and delivering inside 50 with precision.

Cougars started the second half with optimism, with ElliottKarpany nailing another on the back of a free kick.

Moments later he spun his way out of trouble at the top of the 50 for Cougars before throwing the ball on his boot landing in the lap of Cooper Jarrett who sent a wobbly set shot through for a goal.

Wallaroo’s Rylan Richardson found himself in space inside the forward 50 and nailed a snap goal from 30 metres out before Mumford took over.

He was the beneficiary of a down-field free kick, taking the set shot chance with open arms, then found himself with all the space in the world, sending through a running goal from 15 metres out.

Mumford snapped another one 30 seconds later, all but taking the game away from Cougars and putting on a brilliant individual display.

After the final break, it was Miller’s turn to step up; a first from the pocket, the next a set shot from 30 metres out and finally one more set shot.

That’s not to mention another Richardson goal snapped at the top of the square as Wallaroo began to unfurl unrivalled dominance in the midfield.

Their win was capped off with a running Brodie Platten goal not long before the final siren, which sent a strong Wallaroo crowd into raptures.

Back-to-back Bulldog bliss

“Finals scribe” REPORT BY

Wallaroo has once again proved its junior colts dominance, waltzing to an 86-point win against Central Yorke Cougars for its second flag in a row.

The Bulldogs were the dominant side while keeping an always-determined Cougars outfit goalless.

The goals started coming when Riley Miller hit a wellplaced pass to Cooper Maio in the pocket, followed immediately by an Anthony Paxton crumbed goal.

Bulldogs had come out of the blocks quickly, but Cougars stepped up with slower and methodical ball movement as the quarter wore on.

However, the Bulldogs weren’t done for the term yet, as R Miller set up the next, laying off a pass to best-on-ground Hunter Wellgreen who ran through a thicket of players before scoring.

Hugo Thyer had been a standout in defence for Cougars, but even he could not stop the goals adding up, with Cohen Mummery next to kick truly from straight in front 25 metres out.

R Miller got on the end of the next foray forward, kicking from 35 metres before

doing the same again shortly after, kicking off two steps after solid movement through Wellgreen and William Rogers.

It was their most dominant quarter for the contest and was topped off by Farren Finn who goaled after receiving the ball from Anthony Paxton over the head of an opponent.

Kolbi Weight delivered inside 50 to Wellgreen who made sure of another major from a set shot before Isaac Freeman also got in on the act just before three-quarter time.

Wellgreen was dominant throughout the middle and across half forward for the entirety of the contest and was thoroughly deserving of the best-on-ground award.

Declan Stevens kicked two in very quick succession to begin the last quarter, including an incredibly skilful dash around the front of a pack.

That premiership feeling was sealed when Wellgreen roved the ball 30 metres out from goal, snapping around his body on the right boot for the last goal of the day.

Fraser Heinrich was a standout for Central Yorke, and worked well alongside teammates Charlie Kakoschke and George Butler.

CMS Crows v CY Cougars

CMS Crows and CY Cougars provided a fantastic display of quality netball for a large crowd who might have gone away with a new appreciation for the skill, fitness and ferocity with which the game is played at this level.

Cougars won the toss and the ball was swiftly delivered to GS Sarah Luke for the first score. Crows replied on the next centre pass with GS Sasha McSkimming rebounding after an inaccurate attempt. A deflection from Crows C Tegan Young forced a contact from Cougars C Laura Cassidy at the fifth centre pass, resulting in a goal to give Crows the lead. Crows GA Bronwyn Farrow worked hard to make space in the circle, allowing S McSkimming to receive the ball, but Cougars GK Joanne Davey put pressure on every attempt resulting in inaccurate shooting. Crows GK Georgina Farrow and GD Lauren McSkimming pounced on loose passes, repelling multiple Cougar attacks. Crows built on their lead when WA Felicity Kemp intercepted in the midcourt for her goalies to score. After an enthralling quarter, Crows led by seven. Teams retook the court unchanged, the game’s intensity allowing only four goals in the first five minutes. Umpires pounced on any infringements and numerous contacts were called as players competed for the ball. The contest between Crows WD Josie Rudduck and Cougars WA Chloe Linke was fierce, while YPNA B&F, Cougars WD Alix Hillebrand and Crows WA Kemp had an intense duel. Crows GA B Farrow found her sweet spot in the circle and C Young and WA Kemp fed her the ball cleanly. Cougars GA Lana Bagshaw also found her range. Ten minutes in, Crows had taken their lead to 13, but Cougars brought their deficit back to 10 by the halftime whistle.

Cougars coach Janine Burrows moved Hillebrand into GD, who made it difficult for Crows to get the ball into their goalies. Cougars reduced the margin gradually, goalies Luke and Bagshaw making the most of every opportunity. Cougars won the quarter, pegging back Crows’ lead to three at the last break.

The ball seesawed from one end of the court to the other before Cougars goaled through Luke. Davey took a strong defensive rebound and her team quickly transitioned into attack, a perfect pass into Luke converted. A contact by Crows on a Cougars centre pass led to another conversion and there was only one goal between the teams. Crows C Young tripped, taking a heavy tumble; she took some time to compose herself, but her tenacity in playing on was all her team needed to inspire them to dig deep.

Cougars Bagshaw missed her next shot, and Crows’ defensive L McSkimming/G Farrow combination propelled the ball into attack. The next seven goals went to the Crows before Cougars managed a score. At the final whistle, the Crows had won 52-45. Best on court: Felicity Kemp, CMS Crows.

B grade

CMS Crows v CY Cougars

Cougars took the first pass with Crows quick to get the first goal in windy weather. Cougars responded swiftly with a return goal. Play was fast from the get go and scoring was goal-for-goal with Crows GS Jessica Farrow and Cougars GS Alanna Barrand not missing a beat. Crows’ movement through the midcourt into attack was clean. Cougars C Marley Holmes gave great help on the circle and Sophie Baker and Sadie Polkinghorne’s rebounding was outstanding. Cougars had a one-goal lead at quarter time, 13-12.

The second quarter started at full throttle with scoring again goal-for-goal, the margin not increasing beyond one. Crows GS Farrow was still on fire, not missing a shot. Cougars GA Jessica Morony was also a standout. Crows’ shooters worked well together despite Cougars’ strong defence. Cougars won several rebounds

but didn’t capitalise on the turnovers. Cougars led 30-28 at halftime.

The rain came just as play resumed. Crows brought on Hannah Short as GK for some height. Cougars were unchanged, and Baker continued to defend strongly. Contesting the ball, Cougar Tayla Barrand and Crow Kari Jones tumbled, Barrand having to leave the court for the blood rule. Crows took the lead, ahead 41-37 at three-quarter time.

Light showers continued. Cougars brought on Georgina Davies as GA. With scores still close, the pressure was on to make every pass count. Crows GS Farrow played brilliantly and GA Erin Cock moved well. Cougars couldn’t penetrate Crows’ brilliant defence, Crows quickly gaining a healthy lead to win 57-44. Best on court: Erin Cock, CMS Crows.

C grade

CMS Crows v Kadina

Kadina had the pass and GA Hayley Lockwood soon scored. Crows replied immediately through GA Tani Farrow, then turned over the third centre pass to take the lead. Nerves still settling, the ball travelled up and down the court multiple times before each score. Both sides had a few wayward passes, held balls and fumbles. Crows’ attack line settled first, with excellent shooting from GS Nikki Hoyle and GA Farrow, allowing them to creep three goals ahead before scoring became goal-for-goal for the remainder of the term. Quarter time: Crows 12, Kadina 9.

A large downpour made for a wet start to the second quarter. Both teams were unchanged. Crows came out powerfully, with tight defence, accurate shooting and capitalising on any Kadina errors. CMS soon snuck to an 11-goal lead. Kadina GD Karmela Kleinig, with a leg injury, was replaced by Claudia Lawrence. Crows extended their lead to 17 before Mia Schmidt had three consecutive intercepts for Kadina, helping reduce the margin.

Halftime: Crows 30, Kadina 16.

Both sides made changes; these were positively influential for Kadina, which didn’t take long to reduce the score difference to 10. Kadina GA Lockwood continued to shoot accurately, making it count almost every time the ball was in her hands within the goal circle. A foot injury to Crows WA Victoria Ingham resulted in the recreation of Crows’ starting line-up, breaking Kadina’s momentum. Kadina C Ebony Lamshed worked tirelessly to create opportunities for her team. Kadina won the third quarter by three goals; three-quarter time: Crows 38, Kadina 27.

Crows’ goalies continued to move well and deliver goals accurately, sinking from long and short ranges, to boost their team’s confidence. Crows WA Liliana Alafaci, who had fed her goalies beautifully all game, went off with a calf injury. Despite being 11 goals down, Kadina did not give up, chasing every loose ball and fighting for each rebound. Kadina pegged the margin back to six with just minutes left but momentum once again shifted, Crows ahead by 10 goals at the final whistle, scores 49-39. Best on court: Tani Farrow, CMS Crows.

D grade

Wallaroo v Bute

The rain stopped before Wallaroo and Bute took to the court to face each other for the second time in two weeks.

Wallaroo had the pass and scored nippily through GA Emily Koch. Bute GS Hannah Price replied. Play was goal-forgoal until Bute C Matilda Cox intercepted and GA Eliza Johnson rewarded her effort. Wallaroo C Taylah Miller and WA Sandra Discombe worked together to feed their accurate goalies. Quarter time: Bute 11, Wallaroo 10.

Bute brought Eloise Guest on at GK. Wallaroo GS Emily Ramsey evened the scores. Good communication and clean passing were key for Wallaroo’s converting turnovers to goals, giving it a sevengoal lead. Bute tightened the reins, GD Hayley Loechel working hard in and

around the circle, making a couple of rare rebounds to help close the gap. Halftime: Wallaroo 25, Bute 21.

Bute moved Denatah Treloar back to GK and Breanna Marks came on at WD.

Gutsy Bute GA Johnson covered a lot of court to get free on the base line, making the most of scoring opportunities. Bute’s speedy Cox continued hunting for tips that could give turnovers but Wallaroo GS Ramsey was ready for any loose balls that came her way in the goal third. Wallaroo

WD Tahnee Crossman picked off several centre passes and defenders Lauren Coleman and Chelsea Maywald rebounded strongly. Three-quarter time: Wallaroo 36, Bute 32.

Alicia Lang came on at WA for Bute. Crossman went into C for Wallaroo and Mel Halliday returned to GK after an injury in the first quarter. Much of the last quarter was goal-for-goal, and WAs Discombe (Wallaroo) and Lang (Bute) had clear leads for centre passes. However, Wallaroo had more options in the centre third with GS Ramsey presenting an extra target and GA Koch leading strongly in the goal circle. Bute steadied, its passing around the circle improved, narrowing the margin, but Wallaroo held on to win by a solitary goal, 49-48. Best on court: Emily Ramsey, Wallaroo.

E grade

Moonta v CY Cougars

From the first whistle on a wintry day, the game was tight, with small, nervous, errors causing turnovers. Centres Scarlett Hatcher (Moonta) and Nellie Polkinghorne (Cougars) had a great tussle through the centre court. Every loose ball was hotly challenged and, with accurate shooting at both ends of the court, the game was tight. Quarter time: Moonta 15, Cougars 13.

Moonta made a couple of changes; Cougars had the same line-up. Tight play continued, the two teams taking turns at having the run of play. All on the court gave 100 per cent and each ball was contested. Madeleine Honner (Cougars) and Maeve Cockshell (Moonta) kept each other honest. Cougars Summer Davies and Annabel Geater-Johnson worked hard to make every shot count. After a 10all quarter, Moonta was ahead 25-23 at halftime.

Neither team made changes but Moonta found another gear, applying full court pressure to break away. Moonta goalies Hallie Koch and Ella Aldridge shot clinically and defenders Tammin Hughes and Lana Elsworthy ensured any missed Cougar goals were turned over. Threequarter time: Moonta 42, Cougars 32.

Cougars brought Maggie Moore on at WD and Hayley Humes into goals; Moonta was unchanged. Cougars settled with the help of a few Marley Smith intercepts. Moonta capitalised on every turnover, nudging it further in front. At the final whistle, Moonta had completed an undefeated season, sealing the premiership with a 55-39 win. Best on court: Scarlett Hatcher (on her birthday), Moonta.

F grade Moonta v Ardrossan

Ardrossan had the pass, moving the ball quickly down the court, but Moonta GD Amelia Bugg intercepted and GA Charlotte Keleher sunk the first goal. Moonta scored again from its centre pass before Ardrossan had its first goal through GS Tia Black. Play continued goal-for-goal, with great pressure from Ardrossan WD Stella Clifford and Moonta C Tayla Oxspring leading to many turnovers in the centre third. Ardrossan struggled to convert, whilst Moonta goalies Keleher and GS Chloe Formosa continued to shoot accurately. Quarter time: Moonta 11, Ardrossan 5. Ardrossan brought on GS Ashlee Clifford, who soon scored. There were many turnovers for both teams in the wet and windy weather but Ardrossan, through A Clifford, scored four unanswered goals to bring the margin back to

Season wrap up

Will we ever see a side this good again?

Well, there you have it. Another Yorke Peninsula Netball Association season run and won.

A mighty congratulations to CMS Crows for going back to back this year, for taking out the A, B and C grades, to Wallaroo for a much sought – after D grade premiership and Moonta for blitzing the junior grades. Commiserations also to CY Cougars, Kadina, Bute and Ardrossan, whose days ended not quite like how they had planned.

The A grade match was a stunning example of why Crows and Cougars have been top all season. It was an intense game filled with sensational skills and Cougars came so close but Crows found something when it was all on the line.

two. Moonta GK Jayda Norton’s pressure in the circle and Bugg’s rebounding helped Moonta push the margin back out to four by the long break. Halftime: Moonta 18, Ardrossan 14.

Moonta came out firing, landing four goals before an intercept from Ardrossan GD Amelia Cornell gave her team its first of the second half. Moonta’s Oxspring made the most of any loose balls, and Keleher remained dominant in goals, helping push the score difference out to nine. After an intercept by GK Shayla Brind, Ardrossan landed the last two goals of the quarter, bringing scores to 29-22 in Moonta’s favour at three-quarter time.

Determined to make life tough for its opposition, Ardrossan scored the first two goals after the break. With tight pressure and accurate shooting from both sides, play seesawed, continuing goal-for-goal.

Ardrossan C Caitlyn Wheare was quick in offence, moving the ball into her goalies with ease to score three quick goals but this surge came too late. Final scores: Moonta 37, Ardrossan 33. Best on court: Tayla Oxspring, Moonta.

G grade Moonta v CY Cougars

CY Cougars were up against Moonta, which hadn’t lost a match for the season. Moonta won the pass, WA Mikalah Zwar was in front fast to receive it and the ball was quickly moved to the circle where GA Summer Koch sunk the first goal. CY Cougars fought strongly, managing to breach Moonta’s defence with Cougars GA Penny Kohlhagen using her signature

In the B grade, Cougars had the lead at the long break but when the rain started, the Crows started coming and ran away with a strong win. Kadina never gave up in its C grade contest against Crows, but you guessed it, those Crows players were too strong from the beginning. Bute could have pipped Wallaroo if there were another 30 seconds in the D grade match, given this game was decided by the smallest of margins. But Wallaroo was strong and held on when needed.

Moonta’s future is looking incredibly strong after cleaning up the junior grades, with the E and G grades finishing the season undefeated. Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this season happen and see you around the courts next year.

split landing to secure the team’s first goal. Moonta WD Nevayah Karpany made the first intercept in the centre third, giving her team the opportunity to break away.

Quarter time: Moonta 11, CY Cougars 4. CY Cougars resumed strongly with GD Matilda Southwood pressuring Moonta’s goalies and several minutes passed before Cougars goaled through GS Lily Davies. In wet and windy weather, the game slowed, and all four shooters struggled to sink goals. Moonta led by 15 at halftime. Sophia Marchetto went into WD for Moonta; GA S Koch shot accurately, landing several goals in quick succession. Moonta drove hard from the centre with C Jayme Koch intercepting several times. GS Sienna Madigan lobbed the ball into GA S Koch, the latter using space to position herself near the goal post. This set play, made repeatedly, helped Moonta break further away; three-quarter time: Moonta 29, CY Cougars 10.

Cougars replaced Alice Butler with Amelia Johnson at WA and Isabelle Hucks came on at WD for Mia Davies. C Sophie Burrows continually offered leads and was a constant source of back-up through the middle. GK Asha Whittaker had some touches and was focused the entire game. Moonta defenders GK Dolce Wauchope and GD Violet Cooper kept CY Cougars’ shooters in check and ensured passes from the side and back lines moved into the centre zone seamlessly. J Koch ran endlessly, being a constant driving force across the court. Moonta secured the flag, final scores 46-15. Best on court: Jayme Koch, Moonta.
