Local businesses feel the effects
More than 100 cases of Covid-19 were active on Yorke Peninsula as of Wednesday, January 5. Local cases and close contacts forced many businesses to continue suffering the effects during their usual busy periods, nearly two years on from the peak of the pandemic.
Growing demand taking a toll
Demanding pressure on local Covid vaccination and testing clinics increased, taking a physical and mental toll on local healthcare workers. Kadina Medical Associates reported significant abuse from some patients who grew agitated over mask and vaccination rules.
Bruce chalks up his first ultramarathon
Jackson Bruce, of Arthurton, clocked his maiden 100-kilometre ultramarathon in 10 hours, 53 minutes and 27 seconds. Jackson followed in the footsteps of his brother Angus, who ran for 24 hours straight, racking up 173km in 2020. He also took inspiration from his late friend whom he met through running and whose name was displayed on his shoe during the ultramarathon.
Compensation for fire victims
Victims of the 2019 Yorketown bushfire received $2.25 million in compensation from SA Power Networks. Shortly after the fire burnt through 5000 hectares and several houses, Maddens Lawyers issued a class action against SA Power Networks after it was alleged the fire started by an SAPN failure. The funds helped compensate victims for uninsured losses during the blaze.
New year, same virus
Port Broughton, Wallaroo and Point Turton held scaled down New Year’s Eve celebrations due to Covid restrictions. A Port Broughton fireworks display was viewed by about 2000 people from the town’s foreshore, caravan parks, boat ramp and elsewhere in the township.

Port Broughton’s natural erosion solution
Barunga West Council received $30,000 from the Coast Protection Board to commence a sand replenishment and vegetation program in Port Broughton. Council aimed to mitigate sand loss from the town’s beach after various weather events and the effects of surrounding infrastructure led to erosion on the foreshore.
T-Ports facility is go
T-Ports’ new shared use port facility in Wallaroo was officially given the green light. The development would feature steel silos with 20,500 tonnes of grain capacity, a bunker site and a 500 metre rock causeway.

Federal funding rolled out on YP
Yorke Peninsula Council endorsed nearly $2 million for local infrastructure projects through the federal government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. Projects to be supported by the funding included various township road reseals, worth $500,000, an Arthurton main street beautification for $200,000, and coastal management strategy projects to the value of $200,000.

FLAME Festival announced by CCC
Copper Coast Council announced it would host a new food, lights, art and music (FLAME) festival. The event would be aimed to highlight the district’s offerings in alternate years to the Kernewek Lowender at Kadina, Wallaroo and Moonta.
YP’s own top five beach
Flaherty’s Beach, near Point Turton, was named the fourth best beach in Australia in 2022 by national coastal veteran Brad Farmer AM. Tourists flocked to the beach, which nudged out Emu Bay, Kangaroo Island, and the Whitsundays, Queensland, for a place in the top five.
RAT race begins
Rapid antigen test collection points opened at Maitland and Wallaroo Covid testing sites. Collection was available seven days per week, with health experts also encouraging people to get PCR tested if they became close contacts.
Pushing for shag solution
Yorke Peninsula progress associations pushed for a solution to address the ongoing cormorant issue. With many cormorants, also known as shags, commonly resting in Norfolk Island pines, local businesses and residents had been left to clean up the excrement left by the birds every day.
St Mary’s first year 8 students
With local schools reopening for the start of term one, St Mary MacKillop School, Wallaroo, had its first intake of year 8 students. The school’s expansion to reception to year 8 followed the construction of a new purpose-built secondary facility. SMMS announced it would again expand to year 9 in 2023.
Duplication lanes begin
The $260 million Augusta Highway duplication project officially commences. The project included the duplication of the highway from north of the Copper Coast overpass to Lochiel, and was jointly funded by state and federal governments.
Bay Road bumped back
Works on Bay Road, Moonta Bay, were delayed by up to five months due to sand collapsing in stormwater drainage trenches, inclement weather and Covid-19 interruptions, among other factors. The road upgrade was initially planned to be completed by December 2021.

Scope for Top of the Yorke Tourism Centre
A $1.2 million revised Top of the Yorke Tourism Centre in Port Broughton was approved by Barunga West Council. The refined design included a separate visitor information centre, kitchen, tourism and events space and shopfront display. Council was unsuccessful in securing funding through Round 5 of the Building Better Regions Fund, but was optimistic of its Round 6 application.
Touching local hearts
Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre raised funds for HeartKids, a foundation close to the hearts of staff members Lisa and Chloe Raymond. Triss Gummow, daughter of Chloe and granddaughter of Lisa, was diagnosed with a congenital heart disease when she was 6 months old and had since been assisted by the foundation in helping her get back on her feet.
New Narungga candidates unveiled
Liberal and Labor announced their candidates to run for the seat of Narungga in the state election. Barunga Gap farmer Tom Michael was declared as the Liberal candidate and Wallaroo business owner Mark Paull ran for Labor. The pair joined independents Dianah Walter and Fraser Ellis, as well as One Nation’s Kerry White in the race.
Crucial bushfire recovery funding
Southern Yorke Peninsula received more than $4 million through the federal Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants program. Yorke Peninsula Council received $2.25 million for its SYP community childcare centre project, as well as $40,000 for bushfire preparedness signage, while Edithburgh Football Club and Sports Association landed $1.8m for a new community centre.
New marina on horizon
A marina development at Port Vincent came closer to fruition after the Lillis Group prepared to lodge an official development application. The marina plans included floating houses, townhouseswaterfront and a 32-apartment complex.
Torrens trio topples
Long-awaited Wallaroo entrance upgrade
Pavement rehabilitation and resurfacing were announced for Wallaroo’s entrance road. A much-needed upgrade for the Copper Coast Highway, between Bowman Road and Athena Drive, was initiated through a joint Copper Coast Council and state government agreement.
Works begin on new Minlaton clubrooms
Construction commenced on a new multipurpose sports and community club at Minlaton’s town oval. Earthworks and plumbing stages had begun following a $445,400 grant through the SA Recreation and Sport’s Grassroots Facilities Program last year.

A passionate group of Tickera locals met with Telstra representatives to discuss the need for better mobile phone coverage. Telstra reps spoke about the difficulties servicing a town as secluded as Tickera, but were hopeful of securing federal funding through the next round of the Mobile Black Spot Program.
Hill’s heartfelt fundraiser
Kadina’s Mick Hill raised more than $14,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation. Hill, who recently underwent his final round of chemotherapy, decided to shave off his hair with the support of his friends and family.
Airstrip upgrade lifting off
Swinging towards The Dunes stage 2
Metacap Developments held an information briefing with Copper Coast Council to begin stage two of The Dunes, Port Hughes. The next phase of the development had scope to include new retail, tourism and medical outlets, residential and aged care lots, eco-camping facilities, as well as extend the golf course and add lake and storage facilities.
Election heats up
The 2022 state election grew to seven candidates competing for the seat of Narungga. Kerry White, for One Nation, Ashley Wright, National Party, and Wendy Joyce, Family First, joined independents Fraser Ellis and Dianah Walter, Mark Paull, Labor, and Tom Michael, Liberal, who had already been announced.
BWC joins in FOGO initiative
Work on a $1 million upgrade of the Minlaton airstrip neared a start date. The airstrip was set to be upgraded from a gravel runway to sealed bitumen thanks to $825,000 received through the federal government’s Regional Airports Program.
Barunga West Council joined a growing number of local governments set to offer a Food Organics and Green Organics bin as part of its kerbside collection program. Residents would transition to fortnightly collection of landfill and recycling bins, as well as a new FOGO bin.
Fighting the mozzy bite
Local councils attempted to mitigate mosquito numbers after the first case of Japanese encephalitis was detected in South Australia. Barunga West Council had been extra cautious in completing fortnightly inspections across local baiting stations.
Masters returns
Copper Coast Council announced its successful bid to host the South Australian Masters Games for the second time. The first time council hosted the games in 2021, more than 1600 competitors participated in 30-plus sports across four days.
Local parks clean up at awards
Point Turton Caravan Park claimed Best of the Best at the Grey Nomad Awards while Southern Yorke Peninsula Water Tower Mural Trail finished runner- up in the Australian Street Art Awards. The popular Point Turton park also won Best Grey Nomad Small Caravan Park at the awards.
More options for EV drivers
New electric vehicle charging stations were set to be rolled out at Kadina, Ardrossan and Edithburgh after the RAA received $12.4 million in state government funding. The new local sites would add to a network of 11 stations between Port Broughton and Marion Bay.
Hall notches 100 years
The centenary of Bute Soldiers’ Memorial Hall was celebrated after months of planning. Celebrations included presentations by Gardening Australia presenter Sophie Thomson, a Cornish Furry Dance by Bute Early Learning and Primary School students and a Dressing the Graves Ceremony.
New local attraction
An accessible maze was officially opened at Moonta’s Polgreen Park. Community groups including Moonta Lions Club and Moonta and District Progress Association collaborated to build the maze, made possible by Copper Coast Council and Human Services SA Reconnect grants.
MLS unveils new facility
Maitland Lutheran School unveiled its new upper primary building, one of multiple facilities to enable the school’s senior school expansion. Federal Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey was in attendance for the opening, which was enabled by $685,000 in Capital Grants federal funding. Allowing the MLS’ expansion to year 11, the building boasted six new classrooms able to house 140 students.
Tigers claw home for double flag
Arthurton makes it two from two in the Yorke Valley Basketball Association grand final. The Tigers claimed the A Men premiership by 11 points with big man Matt Thomson taking home best on court, while the A Women snuck home by a single point with best on court awarded to sharp-shooter Isabelle Jacobs.
Ninnes Road receives revamp
More than $1 million worth of upgrades neared completion along Ninnes Road. About one kilometre of road between Upper Yorke Road and Green Road was resurfaced and widened to address safety issues associated with rutting and surface failure.
Flash wheels on display
More than 1000 people rolled out their proudest wheels at the annual Moonta and District Progress Association Show ‘n’ Shine. A total of 92 classic and vintage cars were on show at the Moonta oval.
Ellis elected
Incumbent Member for Narrungga Fraser Ellis was re-elected to state parliament after receiving 32 per cent of first preference votes, ahead of Liberal candidate Tom Michael on 28.1 per cent. Mr Ellis is the first non-Liberal member for the region since Keith Russack in 1977.
Works start on mines project
The Moonta Mines National Heritage Project commenced with works on Hughes Enginehouse, with further upgrades to Richmans Enginehouse, Taylors Shaft, Moonta Mines Museum and Moonta Mines Uniting Church also planned as part of the $4.8 million development.
Maitland Show celebrations
The Maitland Show was held to great success with a range of different activities held. Officially opened by John Dawkins MLC, the event was described as a brilliant celebration for the local community.
Kambula notches record sale
Kambula Stud, Kadina, sold the two highest-priced lots at the 2022 Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale. Owned and operated by the Toole family, the horse stud sold 12 of its 13 lots, including a Dundeel filly, the half-sister to Yulong Command, for a sale-topping $375,000.

Showing off a new name
The Kadina Show was renamed the Copper Coast Show ahead of its August event. The decision was made by the Kadina Agricultural, Horticultural and Floricultural Society to make it more marketable, more inclusive and more representative of the whole region.
Premiership glory for Crows
Chelsea Biddell, Rachelle Martin and Hannah Button made history by winning the first AFLW grand final in 2022 with the Adelaide Crows. The Crows defeated Melbourne at Adelaide Oval on Saturday, March 9. The win meant Button was the first YP player with two AFL premiership medallions while the club became the first in AFLW history to win three flags from four grand final appearances.
Bute-ful mural
Bute proudly unveiled its first silo art mural, with Sydney based duo Scott Nagy and Janne Birkner completing the project in mid-April. Bute 2000 Onwards Progress Committee received $50,000 through the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal’s Tackling Tough Times Together program, before Barunga West Council matched the funding, bringing the total cost to $100,000.
Wallaroo road works complete stage
The first stage of the Wallaroo entrance road works were completed on Sunday, April 3. Initial pavement rehabilitation and resurfacing of the Copper Coast Highway between Beare Street and Athena Drive prepared the area for the second stage of stormwater works, expected to begin next year.
Fibre to the node
Wallaroo couple Amy Nottle and Luke von Bertouch were forced to pause plans to build their dream home after an unknown fibre optic pit was discovered on their block. The cost of moving the cables was initially estimated at around $130,000 but, after a meeting with Telstra, the cost was halved.
Innovation recognised
Kadina Community Library was named the 2022 Jim Crawford Award winner for Innovation in Libraries at the 2022 Local Government Association’s council showcase dinner. The library’s Always Open project allows the community to use the facility outside of normal opening hours.
Birthday celebrations for YPLO
Yorke Peninsula Leisure Options celebrated 20 years of community service on Friday, April 1. In that time, the group has added tens of thousands of trees to the local landscape and created a space for people with disability to contribute to the community.
Banding together
Aaron Jenkins was honoured at the Kadina Wallaroo Moonta Band’s annual general meeting. Aaron received the Brian Neill Most Improved Player Trophy while the entire band received the Sam Trenwith Bandsman of the Year Trophy for their efforts in 2021.
Seafood at Port Broughton
More than 1000 people attended the first Seafood on Spencer event at the Port Broughton foreshore on Saturday, April 2. The event was more than two years in the making, thanks to Covid-19 delays, with cooking demonstrations, local produce and entertainment all highlights.

Upgrades began in Queen Square, Moonta, with work to rehabilitate the public toilets first on the list. Shared paths through the park were also identified as a priority within the Queen Square Master Plan.
Kadina hosts BMX series
Copper Coast BMX Club hosted round 4 of the 2022 Hutsix BMX State Series on Sunday, April 24. Almost 300 riders nominated for the event, including locals Avalon Moore and Tyler Styles.
Centenary for Curramulka memorial
Anzac Day commemorations at Curramulka had extra meaning with the town marking 100 years since the unveiling of its monument. Mrs Clara Campion did the honours in 1922, as she lost two of her 10 children in World War I.
Goody an MVP
Edithburgh’s Shineah Goody was named South Australia’s Most Valuable Player in the 2022 Under 18 Girls AFLW National Championship. Goody was a key contributor in all matches, but was critical in the side’s final win against Victoria Metro to seal the championship title.
X-man shines the way
Xavier Cock returned home to his Bute family farm after 467 days in hospital. Xavier, 13, was diagnosed with Vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which is characterised by fragile body parts, in 2017. A perforated bowel and sepsis landed Xavier in and out of hospital in late 2020.

Football Club officially opened its new changeroom facilities, funded by a grant from the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing, the club and Barunga West Council. The opening was the culmination of several years’ work for the space, with the club first applying for funding in 2017.

Researchers discovered eight of 10 female brush-tailed bettongs reintroduced to Dhilba Gurranda-Innes National Park were carrying young just six months after being returned to country The bettongs’ release was part of the Marna Banggara project.
No action, no closure
The family of the late Gayle Woodford, of Stansbury, were left devastated by SafeWork SA’s decision to not prosecute her employer Nganampa Health Council after her death on duty in 2016. Mrs Woodford was working as a nurse in the APY Lands when she responded to a late-night emergency callout in Fregon and was subsequently abducted and murdered by Dudley Davey, who was sentenced to life in prison with a 32-year non-parole period in 2017.
Concept floated for Bute development
Barunga West Council approved a concept plan of 25 allotments, between 1500 and 2065 square metres each, off Arbon Road, Bute to address the growing need for housing. Adjoining community and rural-zoned allotments were also considered for subdivision at a later stage.

YPFL, YPNA host pink round
Football and netball players in the YPFL and YPNA donned their best pink accessories to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research in the now annual Pink Round.
Child care subsidy changes
Families with multiple children were set to benefit from improvements to the federal Child Care Subsidy, announced in May. The rate was expected to increase in July but was brought forward to March, increasing the return for a second child in care to 30 per cent.
Wehr makes AFL debut
Balaklava’s Jacob Wehr made his AFL debut for the GWS Giants against the West Coast Eagles on Sunday, May 22. Jacob, whose father Gary is from Bute, scored a goal in the third quarter and had 13 touches, five marks, a tackle and a clearance.
Cultural burning returns
Paskeville’s William Pearce made his SANFL league debut with Woodville-West Torrens against Central District on Saturday, April 30. Pearce finished the game with 15 disposals, eight marks, a tackle and a goal at the 25-minute mark of the opening term.
Northern and Yorke Landscape Board completed cultural burns at Dhilba GuurandaInnes National Park and a grassland site in Ardrossan for the first time in many years. Also known as fire-stick farming, cultural burning is a complex practice based on low-intensity, cool burns at low flame height, intended to destroy weeds and promote native vegetation regrowth.
Life membership for CD
Agronomist Chris “CD” Davey was awarded life membership of the Northern Sustainable Soils group. Chris founded the group in 2007 and said he was left speechless by the honour.
Jones designs Indigenous jumper
Bute’s Lachlan Jones designed Port Adelaide Football Club’s 2022 Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round jumper. The guernsey design celebrated Jones’s journey of discovering more about his Aboriginal heritage, including the life and legacy of his grandmother, who was a member of the Stolen Generation.

Childcare crisis
Port Broughton businesses were hit by scarce childcare options. Several family-owned enterprises with young children had to change their operating hours in order to juggle their children and work options, with Barunga West Council announcing it was working with Regional Development Australia to finalise a business case for a childcare facility.
Rejuvenating Robert Street
Yorke Peninsula Council progressed its plans to revitalise Robert Street, Maitland. WAX Design created a concept design, based on public feedback, which was then taken to community consultation before being adopted by council.
Rate rise for farmers
Primary producers within Yorke Peninsula Council were faced with a hefty rates reise in the 2022-23 financial year. After weeks of discussion, elected members decided to increase all rates by 2.5 per cent, with an extra 2.5 per cent increase for primary production land.
Ramsey re-elected
Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey claimed his seat for the sixth time following the federal election on Saturday, May 21. Rowan received 37,900 votes and his nearest rival, Labor’s Julie Watson, 18.309.

Trekking for a reason
Yorke Peninsula towns including Rogues Point, Port Vincent, Port Moorowie and Edithburgh hosted the Jodi Lee Foundation’s South Australian trek on Friday and Saturday, May 13 and 14. Participants walked 72 kilometres to raise money and awareness for the prevention and early detection of bowel cancer.

Copper Coast Council was pleased with the success of its inaugural FLAME Festival, held across the three main towns of the Copper Coast from Friday to Sunday, May 27-29. The festival showcased local food, lights, art, music and entertainment and attracted thousands to the area.
Showing and shining
More than 100 vehicles entered Barunga West Council’s Classic and Vintage Show ‘N’ Shine on Sunday, May 29. About 900 people flocked to the foreshore to look at the vehicles and cast their vote on their favourite, with Bill Lane’s modern classic 1972 blue Volkswagen Combi earning the People’s Choice Award.
Adelaide-based company Bardavcol Pty Ltd was appointed official contractor of the Fisherman Bay infrastructure project. The $23 million works included the creation of new wastewater collection and stormwater systems, road upgrades, coastal protection measures and widening the boat ramp.
Agricultural land on the up
The value of agricultural land in the Yorke Peninsula Council area had risen by more than $1 billion in the past year. Valuations for primary production land in the region increased from $4.8b to $5.8b, a 21.3 per cent jump, while residential valuations increased by 3.2 per cent.
Tabb wins premiership
Moonta Bay’s Jaimi Tabb helped her North Adelaide SANFLW side claim the 2022 premiership against Sturt on Sunday, May 29. Tabb kicked a goal early in the fourth quarter to give the Roosters the lead for the first time in the match and kickstarted the 7.6 (48) to 4.6 (30) win.

Platform to protect endangered osprey
A nesting platform, built by members of the Ardrossan Men’s Shed, was installed near the Port Broughton mangroves utilising a helicopter on Thursday, June 2. The initiative was funded by the state government’s Landscape Priorities Fund, and was one of five platforms installed across the peninsula.
Trio in state squad
Jett Hasting, Tom Luck and Kade Herbert were all named in the 2022 SANFL under 16 squad after having significant impacts on an u16s trial match on Saturday, June 12. The u16 side competed in the AFL National Championships later that month.
SAASTA triumph
Central Yorke’s SAASTA side defeated the Riverland in the 2022 Aboriginal Power Cup grand final at Adelaide Oval on Sunday, May 29. Students participated in a week long program which featured a nine-a-side football carnival and education sessions.
Strong season tipped
Farmers expected a strong 2023 season after some towns measured up to 50mm of rain in the first few weeks of June. It had been a nervous wait for some farmers, who had dry seeded their crops.
Building destroyed by fire
An office on the corner of Charles Terrace and Jones Street, Wallaroo, was destroyed by a deliberately lit fire on Saturday, June 4. The building was used by CME Civil for storage purposes; the fire caused about $120,000 worth of damage.
Greater access for Edmund Street
Barunga West Council committed more than $200,000 to roadworks on Edmund Street, Port Broughton. Work included sealing, widening and extending the footpath, resealing the road and the creation of protuberances to create safer crossing spaces for pedestrians.
Guilty plea for firebug
A Minlaton woman pleaded guilty to causing two bushfires on southern Yorke Peninsula in November 2021. After entering the plea, charges against Jane Catherine Judd for four other blazes were dropped. The fires, from Agery to Urania, were all lit on the same day.

YP Council to extend mural trail
Members of the public were consulted on possible designs for new additions to the Yorke Peninsula Council SYP Water Tower/Tank Mural Trail. Ideas for the Minlacowie water tank, which measures almost six metres high, were discussed at a public drop in session while work on Wool Bay’s water tank and shed art also progressed.
Project to protect Gynburra species
Fisheries Research and Development Corporation began a project to capture cultural and scientific knowledge about the Gynburra (butterfish) species. The project — led by Garry Goldsmith in collaboration with his community on Guuranda, and Dr Paul Rogers from Southern Fishery and Ecosystem Solutions — aimed to help enhance traditional knowledge and practices, with results to be shared at the Gynburra Festival at Port Victoria in January 2023.
Jones wins rising star nomination
Lachlan Jones received the round 15 nomination for the AFL’s Rising Star Award. The former Bute player was recognised for his performance against the Gold Coast Suns in which he had 16 disposals, two tackles and a goal.
Adopt a street tree
Copper Coast Council launched its adopt a street tree program. Keen and eligible residents were asked to nominate for the program, under the stipulation they would be responsible for watering their tree. Council set aside $10,000 from its pre-existing operating reserves budget for the program and hoped 100 to 125 trees per annum could be planted.
Braving the freeze
Staff and students at Moonta Area School braved icy water in their own ice bucket challenge in a bid to raise money for FightMND. The fundraiser was decided by the school’s student voice, with brave dunkers dressing up for the cause.

A vintage play-scape, lawned area, nature play and sensory garden are all key features of the master plan for Polgreen Park in Moonta. Moonta and District Progress Association as well as Moonta Lions Club and Copper Coast Council were working together on the project.

Works begin on Moonta sink hole
Work to repair a sinkhole on Verran Terrace, Moonta Mines, began following an investigation by Copper Coast Council. The sinkhole appeared on the corner of Shepherdson Road between Thursday and Friday, June 9-10, after a water main leaked underground.
DESPERATE TIMES... Port Victoria resident David Burbidge is one of many desperate locals affected by an ongoing rental shortage. Mr Burbidge has called for more landlords to rent out their properties as permanent homes, rather than solely offering them as short-term accommodation.
Surge in homelessness reaches a new height
Homelessness rates continued to climb across Yorke Peninsula. Rental vacancy rates hit as low as 0.3 per cent with many locals looking elsewhere for residency. Rental prices also climbed 9.3 per cent since the beginning of 2021.

Locals call out bad phone reception
More than 40 locals attended Telstra-led customer discussion sessions in Yorketown and Kadina to voice their growing concerns about poor phone reception. Concerns such as frequent signal disconnections, SMS/MMS message delays and the inability to make phone calls were all raised.
Minlaton sporting a new look
Minlaton and District Community Sports Centre received the first stages of much-needed upgrades. The newly renovated changerooms feature three toilet and shower blocks as well as SANFL standard electrical facilities and tiling.
Listening Game on for local concerns
One Nation’s first South Australian representative Sarah Game MLC visited Yorke Peninsula to listen to the concerns of local people on Monday, July 18. Ms Game met with representatives from schools and local businesses, along with national park rangers about their needs and concerns.
Trail works set for Top of Yorke

Alford Hall open to events
Restoration of the 113-year-old Alford Hall was completed. The project included new painting, electrical work, floor sanding and renovations to the kitchen and entry and was funded by Barunga West Council.

Council boundary relocation released for consultation
A proposal to shift local government boundaries near Tickera was released to the public for consultation. The move would have rezoned some of the area to Barunga West Council, with the South Australian Local Government Boundaries Commission talking to locals about the potential change.

Fake notes used on Yorke Peninsula
Police investigated the use of counterfeit notes at various locations across Yorke Peninsula on Friday, July 22. Forged $50 and $100 notes were presented to police as they urged business owners to be extra vigilant.

Yorke Peninsula Council received several proposals for its clifftop kiosk in Balgowan. Council ultimately decided to reinstate a community-run kiosk, takeaway and general store.

Vietnam Veterans’ Day well attended across YP

Yorke Peninsula Football league held its Indigenous Round on Saturday, July 30. A grade teams across the league unveiled special guernseys while events on the day included smoking ceremonies, Welcome to Country and special Indigenous Round trophies and medals.
Black Summer service recognised
More than 100 members of Yorke Peninsula CFS stations were awarded the National Emergency Medal for their heroic efforts during the horrific Black Summer bushfires in 2019-20. The volunteers from across Yorke Peninsula received their awards at Paskeville CFS on Saturday, August 6.

The Lexus Melbourne Cup and members of the Victorian Racing Club galloped into Wallaroo on Tuesday, August 9. The day was filled with many festivities including phantom race calls, a fashion parade and opportunities for the public to take a picture with the famous trophy.
Narungga woman’s remains repatriated
The body of a Narunnga woman was repatriated to Australia after being discovered in the United States. It was believed that the Narunnga woman’s remains had been kept at the Smithsonian Museum since 1926.

Around-the-clock ATM for Port Broughton
Port Broughton residents were granted access to a 24/7 ATM after Barunga West Council announced it would partner with Armaguard to install a machine next to the council office. The introduction of the new ATM came despite more than 6000 ATMs being removed across Australia since 2017.

Valda Southam won the YPCT and Kadina Retravision AFL Tipping competition with 143 correct tips. Point Turton’s Alex Golja was named runner-up for a second season and Matthew Penney, of Wallaroo, was third.
Jarrad Redden retires
Southern Yorke Peninsula sporting talent
Jarrad Redden retired from the SANFL after 14 years. Redden won three premierships with Woodville-West Torrens and also played 16 games for Port Adelaide in the AFL between 2012 and 2015.

Camping fees rise across the peninsula

Yorke Peninsula Council doubled its camping fees for the 2022-23 financial year, raising the daily fee from $10 to $20. Despite the increase, the fee still remained below the state average of $22. Ratepayers receive a 50 per cent discount on all forms of permit.
Drug boss caught on YP
An international drug trafficker was caught on Yorke Peninsula as a part of Task Force Ironside on Sunday, August 21. The 47-year-old man was arrested by the South Australia Police Serious and Organised Crime Branch and received 29 different drug related charges and 17 money laundering offences.
YP Council awards community grants
Yorke Peninsula Council awarded more than $100,000 to about 30 groups and non-profit organisations as a part of the 2022-23 Community Grants Scheme. A variety of projects received support, including wheelchair seating, football club expansions and the establishment of a nine-hole par 3 golf course.
Stormwater works start in George Street
The $600,000 stormwater project began in George Street, Moonta on Monday, August 8. The works received slight delays due to chaotic weather through the spring months, but the 500metre drainage project is expected to be finished by the new year.
Maitland salutes
150th in style
Maitland celebrated its 150th birthday with more than 1000 people attending celebrations on Saturday and Sunday, August 13 and 14. The weekend included a market, classic cars, sack truck relays and the opening of a new Native Garden Trail.
Residents rally to retain iconic slide
Community members came out in full force to protest the potential demolishing of the iconic New Town playground slide. The New Town equipment failed a safety inspection by the Copper Coast Council but locals requested for the equipment to be restored instead of demolished.

Sink or Survive a sensational success
The first ever Sink or Survive event was held on the Walk the Yorke trail. About 10 solo runners and four teams of three and four people attempted to finish the 500 kilometre trek between Sunday and Saturday, August 21 to 27. Six solo runners and all four teams finished the challenge.

Wakefield Regional Council passed a motion to demolish and remove the old and dilapidated Welcome to the Yorke Peninsula sign and information bay at Port Wakefield. The sign’s future was put into question by Wakefield residents and Member for Narungga Fraser Ellis.

Isolation rules ease across the country
A Snowtown mother won a $40 million Powerball jackpot on Thursday, September 8. She was the solo winner of the division one prize and the first South Australian division one winner for the 2022 calendar year.
Mandatory mask wearing and seven-day isolation periods for positive Covid-19 infections were scrapped by the national cabinet on Friday, September 9. The easing of restrictions also came with a push for those over 30 to receive their fourth vaccination.

Barunga West Council awarded 10 community grants, ranging from $969 to $5000. Amongst those who received grants were Port Broughton Uniting Church, Gunner Bill’s Heritage Centre and Broughton-Mundoora Football and Netball Club.
Tourism industry continues to boom
Tourism in regional South Australia continued to prove its popularity after regional accommodation recorded its best winter occupancy rate on record despite lingering worries around Covid-19. The average occupancy rate for the winter period was 57 per cent.

Prolific Yorke Peninsula author Tricia Stringer launched her new book Keeping Up Appearances on Wednesday, October 5. The novel was her 15th adult title published and follows the story of three women in the fictional town of Badara.

Schools win at Royal Adelaide Show
Port Broughton Area, Central Yorke and Kadina Memorial Schools returned from the Royal Adelaide Show with strong results. PBAS received the Most Professional Team award in the goat category as well as earning off the hoof honours while Central Yorke recorded great results in the led steer and led goat competitions. KMS placed well with its sheep, led steers, led goats and other agricultural products.
Moonta claims YPFL A grade Premiership
The Moonta Demons avenged their heartbreaking 2021 grand final loss by winning the 2022 YPFL premiership on Saturday, September 17. The Demons defeated minor premiers CMS Crows by 34 points at Bute Oval. Malcolm Karpany claimed the best-on-ground medal while Moonta’s Matt Altman and captain Tyler Andrews led the goal kicking with two apiece.
Owning coastal protection
PISCA Bushland Conservation Trust announced its ownership of a block of coastline south of Port Rickaby. The 100 acres of native scrubland and coastal dunes, as well as the 50 acres of pasture, were officially bought on Thursday, September 1.

A one-off public holiday was announced to commemorate Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II’s passing. The public holiday was announced for Thursday, September 22 and coincided with the National Memorial Service held at Parliament House, Canberra.

Stephanie Talbot, of Kadina, was named one of the best players in the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Sydney. Talbot helped the Opals to a bronze medal as Australia’s most consistent performer and was selected in the tournament’s All-Star Five.

More than 250 people attended a free nature festival event, Guranna Wilba Minlagawingga (Good Day at Minlagawi), on Thursday, October 13 The event was held in the Minlagawi Gum Flat Reserve, Minlaton, and included a huge range of activities, from cubby building to Nharangga string making and throw sticks.
Adams claims podium finishes
Wallaroo’s Caitlin Adams was the second woman to cross the line in the 2022 Lumary City to Bay Fun Run, Adelaide, in September before going on to win the women’s 10 kilometre event at the Melbourne Marathon on Sunday, October 2.
Port Wakefield open for the first time
Visitors to and from Yorke Peninsula enjoyed a smoother journey via Port Wakefield across the October long weekend. All four lanes through Port Wakefield were opened for the first time on Friday, September 30, producing a smoother journey for many drivers.
Arsonist cops five years
Jane Judd was sentenced to five and a half years in prison by the Adelaide District Court on Wednesday, September 28. Ms Judd was initially charged with lighting two fires at Agery, two between Arthurton and Maitland and two south of Maitland, on November 5, 2021.

Alford Bowling Club turns 70
Alford Bowling Club celebrated its 70th birthday on Monday, October 3. Bowlers from across the peninsula came together for some social bowling to celebrate the club, which was officially opened on October 25, 1952.

Kara completes run for X’s rehabilitation
Kara Rendell cruised to the finish line in her Run for X, setting off from Ellen Street, Moonta, and being joined at different stages by more than 50 friends and family members before she arrived at Xavier Cock’s family farm in Bute, on Sunday, October 23. Kara has raised more than $13,000 to assist with rehabilitation for 13-year-old Xavier, who lives with Vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a disease characterised by fragile body parts.
Shag strategy progresses
Yorke Peninsula, Copper Coast and Barunga West Councils forged ahead with a pied cormorant control program which included a forum for community members at Minlaton on Tuesday, October 18. Environmental consultant Ecosure plans to use the feedback submitted, and its own observations, to develop the strategy in 2023.
Ferry to the rescue
Sea Rescue Copper Coast Flotilla and the Spencer Gulf Searoad ferry crews worked together to save a woman in distress at Wallaroo on Monday, October 17. Sea Rescue began searching the bay while the Aurora V was making its return trip from Lucky Bay when its crew picked up transmission via VHF radio about the missing swimmer, and offered assistance. The ferry crew spotted the woman, believed to be in her mid-30s, two kilometres off shore and stopped to help direct Sea Rescue to her location.
Yorke Peninsula gets a soaking

Cost partnership to keep local jetty open
Copper Coast Council requested a costsharing partnership with the state government for the maintenance of Port Hughes jetty. A storm in 2020 resulted in the jetty’s closure and significant repairs which cost council about $10,000.

Towns across Yorke Peninsula experienced a month’s worth of rainfall in two days to end October. Bute, Moonta and Warooka received more than 20mm of rain from October 30 to November 1. Arthurton’s October average is 37.22mm but the town received 71mm for the month while Warooka also doubled its monthly average (34.8mm) receiving 69mm.
Plovers destroyed in attack
Local volunteers and nature authorities urged members of the public to be respectful of hooded plovers along Yorke Peninsula beaches after vandals took and destroyed two sets of eggs at Port Hughes. Volunteers Stephen and Rosina Jantke were horrified to find the yolks of three eggs smashed against rocks on Sunday, October 9.
Boat ramp to launch
Yorke Peninsula Council finally endorsed the Marion Bay boat ramp concept design after it received 39 formal submissions during a one-month community consultation period. The concept plans include a six metre wide ramp for large boats, a 4m wide ramp for small-to-medium boats, a walkway and wave calming infrastructure.
Maitland shines as Neverland
Near-full houses were treated to a magical trip to Neverland as Maitland Music and Arts Club Youth Theatre presented Peter Pan Jr. on Friday and Saturday, October 28-29. The production, directed and choreographed by Leanne Cane, was a modern adaptation of J. M. Barrie’s classic tale of a boy who never grows up and featured great use of the cast’s vocal, acting and dancing prowess.

Students preparing for exams
More than 11,000 year 12 students from across the state prepared to sit their SACE exams which officially began on Monday, November 7. Kadina Memorial School student Ryan Bull said he was nervous but excited, much like the rest of his peers. “Since coming back to school full-time (with Covid restrictions easing), I think I have felt a lot more comfortable about exams, as I am sure a lot of students have,” he said.
Rental problems take hold
There were only nine residential rental properties available across the entire Yorke Peninsula as of Tuesday, November 8. The ongoing rental demand, coupled with short supply, has driven many into homelessness but Copper Coast Council had investigated potential sites for a new affordable housing facility most notably a vacant allotment opposite the Kadina CFS station, Frances Terrace. Barunga West Council staff had also accelerated home building approvals, amongst other steps.
Severe weather hits peninsula
Wallaroo Shores washes to market
A portion of the Wallaroo Shores development was placed on the market. Real estate company Savills International, in conjunction with Smith Agency, was engaged to sell the undeveloped 13.85 hectares of the project. “I have no doubt this beautiful parcel of land will sell,” Smith Agency managing director Deke Smith said.
Yorke Peninsula was hit hard by lightning strikes and strong winds as thunderstorms swept across the state on Saturday, November 12. “For the people on YP, it has certainly been a very disruptive time, as our crews had also been responding to outages for several days before the weekend,” SA Power Networks head of corporate affairs Paul Roberts said. “This is the largest outage event we have had since the state-wide blackout in 2016.”
First load of grain for T-Ports
T-Ports received the first load of grain at its Wallaroo facility on Tuesday, November 8. The milestone came almost two years after site construction began.
Rejuvenation for Copper Coast unsealed roads
Snapper stocks found to be short
The South Australian Research and Development Institute released its 2022 snapper fishery stock assessment on Wednesday, November 9. Snapper stocks in Gulf St Vincent and Spencer Gulf were revealed to still be depleted despite a fishery closure in place since November 2019.

Edithburgh shines for big day
A Day at the ‘Burgh returned in fine fashion, with crowds from near and far making the most of the spring sunshine at Edithburgh on Sunday, November 6. Attendees filled the main streets in town and indulged in food, drinks, old cars, helicopter rides, history, music and art.
New faces join councils
Barunga West, Copper Coast and Yorke Peninsula Councils welcomed new councillors to their ranks at the beginning of a new term. BWC and YPC held elections and filled all positions while CCC received one less nomination than councillors required so will hold a supplementary election in 2023.
A re-sheeting program commenced across the Copper Coast’s unsealed roads. Thomas Plains Road, Kadina, was the first to receive a fresh layer of rubble as part of Copper Coast Council’s fiveyear plan to renew its unsealed road network.
The full reconstruction of Bay Road, Moonta Bay, neared completion in early November. Local and visiting road users had full access to Bay Road from Highview Grove to the Moonta Bay jetty, with asphalting works between Highview Grove and Robert Street to be completed by the end of November.
Tourist hotspot winners
It was clear Yorke Peninsula was home to some of the state’s best tourism spots when three winners were named at the 2022 South Australian Tourism Awards on Thursday, November 3. Redwing Farm, Ardrossan Museum and Information Centre, and the Ardrossan Caravan Park all claimed gold awards while Wallaroo Holiday Park received a silver.
BWC launches new Bute play space survey
TEEING OFF... Copperclub general manager Rohan Bock was looked forward to the construction phase of a new 80-patron clubhouse, as section 1G of The Dunes, currently undeveloped golf course land, was sold to the Copperclub by developer Kallin Property Pty Ltd.
Barunga West Council released a community survey to gain information on how Bute’s outdoor spaces are being used. The survey came as council progressed plans for a revitalisation project thanks to a $250,000 Wellbeing SA grant received the previous December.

Mining bill tabled in parliament
Member for Narungga Fraser Ellis introduced the Mining (Land Access Inquiry Recommendations) Amendment Bill 2022 to state parliament on Wednesday, November 16. The bill is an attempt by Mr Ellis to legislate the recommendations from the select committee formed in the previous parliament which delivered a report on how to better improve the system. Mr Ellis explained the propositions which featured in the bill, including the establishment of a mining land commissioner, an increase in legal assistance support and a code of conduct for exploring companies.
Copper Trail parkrun turns one
Copper Trail parkrun celebrated its first birthday on Saturday, November 19. A field of 37 people participated in the anniversary celebration, with six first timers and seven recording personal bests. Since the first run last year, 800 participants have completed 2109 parkruns, covering 10,545 kilometres and recording 347 personal bests.

Josh Ritter, Copper Coast Council CEO Russell Peate and Moonta Golf Club outgoing president John Teague looked forward to year-round irrigation for playing surfaces in the town with the help of a potential drought proofing plan. The Drought Proofing Sporting and Community Facilities project would service the Moonta oval, 18 fairways of Moonta Golf Club, and a driving range at Copperclub, Port Hughes, through a 2.7-kilometre pipe network stemming from the Port Hughes Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Baby boom at Barunga West
Birth rates for 2021 revealed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed Barunga West Council has the third highest in the state at 1.70. The 2021 rise was first time the annual average had increased since 2008, which had an average 2.02. Despite the lowering averages in recent years, BWC’s birth rate has increased dramatically since 2018, rising from 1.78 to 2.82. These figures rank the area as the ninth highest in the country and third in the state behind Mount Remarkable 3.26 and Tumby Bay 3.41, both of which are in the top three councils in the country.
Schools open new buildings
Minister for Education, Training and Skills Blair Boyer was on hand to open new buildings at Kadina Memorial and Moonta Area Schools across Wednesday and Thursday, November 23-24. KMS officially opened its new performing arts centre while Moonta’s wellbeing centre received the same treatment a day later.

Authorities, organisations and local councils were busy preparing for the rush of tourists during summer, especially on the back of other areas of the state dealing with ongoing flooding concerns.
Miraculous save at Port Hughes
Port Hughes General Store staff members Jaymee Matthews, Ashleigh Mobbs, Ryan Durdin and owner Saskia Pridham were nearing knock-off time when a woman burst through the shop doors to tell them someone had fallen off the jetty on Tuesday afternoon, November 22. The man was 63-year-old Vince Dimasi, who was visiting Port Hughes from Adelaide for a holiday with his wife. Mr Dimasi was fishing on the southern side of the jetty when he stepped away from the railing to cast his line and stumbled over the edge. He was saved by the quick-thinking staff who jumped in after him.
TAKE OFF... SA Ambulance Service volunteer team leader Sandy Gutsche and Royal Flying Doctor Service Southern Yorke Peninsula Support Group assistant treasurer Lynette McKenzie and president Janice McEvoy were pleased Yorketown airstrip received a $96,738 grant through the state government’s Support Regional Aviation Program. The total project is expected to cost $196,738 with council funding the shortfall, and is expected to begin in first half of 2023 and be completed by the end of June.

St Columba’s Memorial School principal Scott March and students Harvey Mylius and Ellie Rachwal inspect plans for the school’s capital works project. “We are excited to be able to deliver a contemporary teaching and learning environment for our junior primary teachers and students,” Mr March said.
Mayor’s 2022 Christmas Message
As 2022 draws to a close it is the perfect time to reflect on the events of the past year.
It has been a positive time for the region with life slowly returning to normality and tourism continuing to boom. We are also are thankful for obtaining grant funding for important projects for our community.
In 2022, Council has received funding for a dedicated childcare centre in Minlaton, the stage one upgrade of the North Coast Road in Point Turton, more bush camping toilets and a lighting upgrade at the Yorketown airstrip. Council has also been working with the community on nearly 30 projects which have been funded through the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
I’m proud to say that our region has also had its fair share of accolades in 2022.
Council was proud to receive the 2021/2022 LGA Scheme Awards Risk Management Major Award for its Strategic Coastal Risk Study in April. Flaherty’s Beach, near Point Turton, received well-deserved recognition as one of Australia’s best beaches. Point Turton Caravan Park won the Best Grey Nomad Small Caravan Park category and the Best of the Best award at the Grey Nomad awards.
The Southern Yorke Peninsula Water Tower/Tank Mural Trail was a runner-up in the Australian Street Art Awards. The trail features mural art on structures at Coobowie, Edithburgh, Stansbury, Yorketown and Port Vincent.
Excitingly, Council is pleased to add two new locations, Wool Bay and Minlacowie, to the trail by the end of the current financial year Planning has also progressed for the Robert Street Maitland Concept Plan, Marion Bay Boat Launching Facility and other major projects such as the Edithburgh jetty dive stairs. As a new year approaches, there is tremendous cause for optimism, with further improvements to our region already being planned.

The time to catch crabs is now
Barunga West Council is urging all Yorke Peninsula crab wranglers to show off their catches during Yorke Peninsula’s Biggest Blue Crab competition. To participate, anglers need to catch a blue swimmer crab in local waters, measure it from claw to claw on the Top of Yorke measuring podiums, upload the pictures to Instagram and tag Top of Yorke.
Moonta makes the female footy push
Moonta Football Club hosted a come and try day for all women and girls on Yorke Peninsula interested in playing footy in 2023. This came as the club looked to field a senior team in the Mid North Women’s Football Competition and under 14 and 17 teams in the Northern Plains Female Football League.
NAPLAN improvements on peninsula
Moonta Area School, St Columba’s Memorial School and Ardrossan Area School each reported improved NAPLAN results of nine per cent or greater since the 2017 tests, some of the most improved results in the state. Minlaton District School also registered pleasing results with an average score of 2498.70 throughout the five-year period.
Moonta dump point moves
Moonta RV Park visitors could now dispose of their wastewater in a more convenient location, the park’s dump point having been relocated from McCauley Park to the RV park entrance on Clayton Road.
Maitland, Curramulka switch on Christmas season
Maitland and Curramulka officially began Christmas celebrations on Yorke Peninsula with their respective celebration and light up events across Friday and Saturday, December 2-3. Curry Light Up was held for the first time since 2019 while Maitland’s celebrations featured a combination of parade, markets and outdoor cinema events.
Copper Coast Council charged for non-election
Copper Coast Council received a $35,000 bill for a local government election which didn’t occur during November. The bill was charged to local governments following state-wide elections, including those like CCC which did not hold a local election due to an insufficient number of nominees. Council’s bill included $6473 for an advertising campaign, $5796 for ballot materials, $6414 for ICT systems, $11,291 for general recharge and $847 for postal ballot return.
Yorke Peninsula Football League adopts 2023 start date
Yorke Peninsula Football League announced it’s set to host a round of football on the weekend of AFL’s magic round next year. The 2023 minor season will commence on its preferred start date, Saturday, April 1, despite earlier discussions of it starting three weeks later, and will run through to Saturday, August 19.
