ARDROSSAN Football and Netball Clubs Strong junior program adding depth
Roos to walk the talk
PROMOTING junior player leadership and participation has added depth to the Ardrossan Netball Club. Petrina Winen has again taken on the role of junior coordinator and been doing a great job of communicating with junior coaches and parents. “Our NetSetGo Program will run for 10 weeks from May 5,” Winen said. “We will hopefully hold a Sam Poolman Clinic again this season and umpiring education sessions for our E graders,” Winen said. “We are also establishing a junior committee for fundraising ideas, with our juniors to run this with parent support, giving juniors a voice and encouraging involvement with the club.” Winen said up-and-coming juniors to watch include Ebony Wheare, Kimberly McKibbin and Georgia Kuhndt, who are all in the Lower North Netball Academy this year. Committee member Andrea Kuhndt said the juniors will continue to build on last season. “Our juniors certainly showed a lot of improvement in all grades and their enthusiasm is there again in 2016,” Kuhndt said. “Junior trainings have had a good number of players out. “We have 32 juniors registered plus NetSetGO A Grade — Izzy Daniel enthusiasts in term two! B Grade — Kathy Kennedy “Seniors are slighter higher with 34 players.” (No C grade) With a strong supporter and volunteer base, D Grade — Bec Davey Ardrossan looks forward to a successful season. E Grade — Angela Hamilton “The first fundraiser is in conjunction with the F Grade — Katie Eden footy club — a players’ auction night after our G Grade — Georgia Kuhndt first home game on April 16,” Kuhndt said. H Grade — Pete and Gavin Moore “We will be offering teas every home game NetSetGO — Michelle Wheare and our netball canteen menu may be extended this year!”
With A grade coach Bruce Westley How has your preseason been? We’ve been busy since the start of January getting some run in the legs and honing our skills. Who are the young players to watch? Henry Crowell, Jack Rowntree, Nathan Pawlyk. Which players could take their games to the next level? All of them — it’s the target for our whole playing group. What are the club’s aims this year? To advance our finishing position from the 2015 season. What else is there to look forward to? Hard work, hard work and more hard work but loving it. Predict the top three sides at the end of the minor round: We will just concentrate on walking the talk. Predict the top three in the Mail Medal: None supplied.

BUTE Football and Netball Clubs
Buzz building at Bute
DUAL ROLE... Renee Drewett is a playing coach for the Bute A grade this season.
COURTSIDE with A grade coach Renee Drewett A grade team to beat in 2016 and why? Crows, always a very strong team with very level-headed players. A grade dark horse team and why? Moonta I think, not really a team that ever gets enough mention, but it has very skilled players. A grade player losses and gains? We have lost a truly inspirational player, Marissa Hewett, who will be chronically missed on the court; we have gained back Hannah Wellington after leaving us for a few years to pursue her career, a very handy pick-up. Up-and-coming junior players at your club and why? Caitlin Daniel is one to watch, she has a very good netball head on her shoulders and will listen to anything and give anything a go, I really hope she channels this into becoming a great future Bute A grade player.
Excitement is building at Bute with all junior teams filled for the first time in a number of seasons. “All of our junior teams have great potential this year and I can’t wait to see how far they go,” president Meagan Daniel said. “We have so many talented juniors coming up through the ranks at present, we are trying to harness their love for the game and give them as many opportunities for development as we can.” Bute’s senior numbers are consistent at about 32, with the players fit after a four-week preseason program run by Julie Schilling, from Hit Refresh Fitness, which the girls thoroughly enjoyed. “So many of our girls are setting fitness goals for themselves and working hard to achieve them,” Daniel said. “Trainings are going well with the girls really pushing themselves.” Daniel said the positive start to the season has been flowed on from work put in last year. “Our training sessions were becoming more structured and had a strong focus on fitness and skills,” she said. “We ran an umpiring program alongside the Green Shirt program with weekly education sessions for umpires at all levels and looked into increasing the resources available to our newer coaches. “As a result of this we saw improvements in the quality and confidence of our umpires and coaches and our teams enjoyed more success on court. “We are continuing to build on the foundations we built last year, strengthening the skills and depth of our teams, doing more work towards our Star Club accreditation, the umpiring program will continue and we’d also like to get more of our coaches accredited.” The club has also planned special skills clinics throughout the season and aims to strengthen the relationship between junior and senior players.

Bute blend of youth and experience EXPERIENCED... Bute has reloaded with a host of new faces and will aim for continued improvement around stalwarts such as Sam Trengove. With A grade coach Craig Dawe How has your preseason been? We started on January 12; it has been a good preseason and numbers have been strong. Who are the young players to watch? Ben Price and Harry Simpson are young players out of the senior colts starting their senior footy. Which players could take their games to the next level? Nathan Hewett, Jay Pridham and Sam Trengove. What are the club’s aims this year? To improve our ladder position from previous years and to strengthen our player numbers. What else is there to look forward to? The goods and services auction early in the season, Rooster Ball later in the year and the Rooster Club members’ draw after every home game. Predict the top three sides at the end of the minor round: Moonta, Pasky, Kadina. Predict the top three in the Mail Medal: No idea.

CMS CROWS Football and Netball Clubs Crows recruits aplenty
Strong Crows flock in 2016 After a strong season in 2015, CMS Crows players have been working hard to be competitive again this season. “Overall for our club, 2015 was a successful season on and off the court,” president Amanda Pitt said. “We had all senior and junior teams compete in finals, with four of our teams making it through to grand finals and the B and E grades winning premierships. “The club implemented a very important coaches program during 2015, which saw all of our coaches attain their foundation accreditation and take part in a number of club internal coaching sessions — a program which I believe has contributed to the success on the court last season.” The club will continue the coaching program and opportunities for coaches this season, with a developmental accreditation course already completed in February. The Crows received 77 player registrations, with strong numbers at preseason and court sessions since they started in February. Pitt said a number of initiatives are in place for junior development, with two training sessions already locked in with members of the Matrics Premier League team. “From funds raised during last season, we are also planning a trip to Adelaide to watch a Premier League or Thunderbirds game with our juniors,” she said. The club will kick off the season with a home game and its first fundraiser, a player auction, in the Curramulka clubrooms that night.
COURTSIDE with A grade coach Sallyann Vivian A grade team to beat in 2016 and why? Pasky, always a tough competitor. You can’t ever write them off in a game. A grade dark horse team and why? Moonta has a good bunch of experienced players, it will be interesting to see what they’ve added to the mix over the offseason. A grade player losses and gains? Losses: Felicity Kemp, Amanda Pitt, Erin Brundell, Lauren McSkimming. Gains: Rebecca McSkimming, Chelsea Biddell. Up-and-coming junior players at your club and why? We have a really strong junior program with plenty of talent coming through the ranks. A couple moving from juniors to seniors this year are last year’s E grade association best and fairest Melissa McSkimming, who has explosive speed and reads the play well, and Tasmyn Biddell, who is also a very handy player, not only tall but also athletic and accurate.
PROMOTED... Chelsea Biddell will be promoted into the A grade defence line-up this season.

With A grade coach Shane Biddell How has your preseason been? We started in the second week of January and it has gone well with reasonable numbers at training and players enjoying the varied program. Who are the young players to watch? Charlie and Harry Litster, Todd Hoyle and Liam Cocks are among those expected to further improve this year. Which players could take their games to the next level? Brett Baillie and Andrew Parsons should provide us with leadership and big man strength around the ground. What are the club’s aims this year? To play good attacking football and make the final five. What else is there to look forward to? Off the field, there will be the Crow Ball, goods and services auction, home game functions, best and fairest count which are all well supported. Predict the top three sides at the end of the minor round: Moonta, Paskeville, CMS Crows. Predict the top three in the Mail Medal: Greg Parkes, CMS Crows; Tyler Baldock, Kadina; Tyson Wait, Paskeville.

COURTSIDE with A/B grade coach Natasha Westbrook A grade team to beat in 2016 and why? Pasky and Crows always manage to put together strong teams. A grade dark horse team and why? Possibly Moonta, I know Kara Madden has returned for them as well as Tamara Lodge and Adele Keleher playing on — all three are very strong players. A grade player losses and gains? Unfortunately we have had two big losses from our A grade in Erin Scott and Emma Byrne. Both these girls played in our defensive circle last year. But we have picked up some great goalies in Prue Hicks and Jessie Miller, who has returned from playing in Adelaide. Emma Borlace is also new to our squad and will add some much-needed height. Up-and-coming junior players at your club and why? Teesha Angus had her first season in A grade last year and impressed me with her athleticism and willingness to learn. She grew in confidence and skill and I think she will continue to do that this year. She will have a big role to play in our defence. Emma Borlace is on board with us this year. I haven’t seen her play much but am impressed by what I have seen so far. She is a very versatile player and her athleticism and game sense will make her a strong A grade player.

Our club has some great young footballers coming through this year with six coming up from senior colts. Bailey Turner and Jason Fagg have both had good preseasons as have Mitch Moyle and Cal Hibbard. Which players could take their games to the next level? Lachie Glazbrook looks fitter and stronger this year. Having said that, I would like to see all of the senior players push themselves to the next level. What are the club’s aims this year? The club aims to play consistent football through all grades and push to again make finals. What else is there to look forward to? We have a new social committee this year with Adam May at the helm. There will be the Bloodhound Ball and the Bloodlow with
CEMENTING HER SPOT... After debuting in A grade last season, Teesha Angus gained valuable experience which will cement her spot in the side this year.
Good luck to all clubs for the 2016 season
STILL STRONG... Daniel Toole and the Kadina Bloodhounds will again have a strong team despite losing many players from last year’s grand final side.

The 2015 season was a big one for Kadina Netball Club and it’s hoping for another strong year. “We started the 2015 season in our new uniforms, thanks to our major sponsors Subway, North Beach Tourist Park and Sportspower Kadina,” president Carolyn Neumann said. “We must also thank Telstra Store Kadina for its generous donation of new netballs.” Kadina fielded teams in all grades and the girls put in a solid effort all season with A, B, E and F grades making finals. “Our little H graders won the end-of-season carnival which was a great way to top off their fantastic year,” Neumann said. “We had Sophie Adams, Lily Neumann, Teesha Angus and Erin Scott represent us at association level, with Erin also playing in the state 17 and under team.” Kadina was also very successful in the YPNA vote count with best and fairest going to Sophie Chapman (A grade), Carolyn Neumann (B grade) and Lily Neumann (E grade). The club had 80 player registrations for 2016, with trials held in February. “Seniors have been training for the past few weeks, and all teams look to be very competitive,” Neumann said. “Although the junior teams will be young, we have a great group of girls and I look forward to seeing what they have instore for us.” The club is in the process of planning and relocating its netball courts, which it hopes will be ready for season 2017.

MOONTA Football and Netball Clubs Moonta following strong 2015 With healthy numbers and plenty of talent from juniors through to the A grade, Moonta is ready to hit the court. “I know the coaches have found the preseason a bit stop-start due to the long weekend and an early Easter but overall they are happy with how the girls are progressing to the start of the season,” president Carina Congdon said. “We are building on our junior success from last year with a number of girls across the age groups making the regional academy squads. “We look forward to them bringing their new skills to the club.” With five teams in finals last year, Moonta will continue to strengthen under the guidance of a dedicated group of coaches. “Last season was a great year for the club with three grades making it to the grand final (G, F and D) with G grade taking out the premiership and E and C grade only just falling at the preliminary final,” Congdon said. “It was great to see so much improvement in the girls over the season — a just reward for our hardworking coaches!” With new rules coming into play this season, players and coaches are excited to implement them into the game. Moonta will be looking smart in 2016 with new club hoodies.

Saying hello: Nick Prokopec, North Clare; Chad Norsworthy, Wallaroo; Ben Smelt, Adelaide Uni. Waving goodbye: Hayden Walker, retired; Jared Greenbank, Reynella; Luke Foster, work commitments; Tom Ferguson, overseas. Last season: third.
RELIABLE... Moonta has recruited some star players for this season but will rely on its locals, such as Shane Moss, to take another step up if it wants the premiership.
SHE’S BACK... Narelle Koch is back and brings with her plenty of experience, strong skills and a level head.
COURTSIDE with A grade coach Sally Hackett A grade team to beat in 2015 and why? Crows and Paskeville sound like they’ve got good numbers. Crows have many of last year’s highly-skilled E graders that have joined the senior ranks, which will certainly strengthen them. Paskeville is always well drilled and sharp on the court. A grade dark horse team and why? Cougars have a whole new group plus a couple of last year’s grand final players to complement them. They’re really quite an unknown. A grade player losses and gains? Losses: Erica Dearlove and Nikkita Aldridge. Gains: Steph Drogemuller, Kara Madden and Narelle Koch. Up and coming junior players at your club and why? Claudia Hatcher has completed all her junior years at Moonta and has now joined the senior ranks. Claudia has had a great start to the season and is keen to play and learn from the experienced senior players. Bella Congdon continues to impress, having an excellent work ethic. With a couple of senior years under her belt she has become an integral part of the A/B line-up.
Moonta on the march With A grade coach Josh Ramsey How has your preseason been? Training started just before Christmas with two sessions which we used to introduce our plans/goals for the upcoming year and introduce the club’s two new coaches and players. Our final session, before Christmas, was an exceptional night with 42 players training with temperatures in the high 30s. Players returned on Monday, January 25, and have been training twice a week with an extra session every second Saturday. The highlight of the Saturday sessions was our run from Waterfall Gully to the top of Mount Lofty, which was extremely difficult but a great result for all 38 players who got to the top. There has been a strong focus on improving our running capabilities as well as improving our ball movement and transition forward, team defence and work around stoppages. Who are the young players to watch? Lachlan Slack, utility; Ben McPeake, small defender/ forward; Willis Daveson, small forward/onballer; Joel Foster, medium defender/onballer. Which players could take their games to the next level? Shane Moss, utility; Tyler Andrews, half-forward/onballer; Dylan Aldridge, utility. What are the club’s aims this year? Once more we have a strong squad with a lot of depth, which is based on young local players who the club has put a lot of time into during the past 24 months. We
have replaced some experienced players with players who will not only improve and complement our current squad, but also cover some deficiencies in the team which we felt needed addressing. The goal is to be competitive in all games, home or away, with a long-term view of positioning ourselves as high on the ladder as we can come September, with a really healthy/fit list. Our result/final standing has been going upwards for the past years and we expect this to continue. What else is there to look forward to? The year starts with our all-important sponsors’ day which is on Saturday, April 19. Our club has terrific sponsors and this day is a great way for our club to recognise them and thank them for their important contribution. Our 2006 B grade premiership team will have a reunion during the year, which is a follow-up to last year’s 10-year reunion for our 2005 A grade premiership. This was a great night and we expect this event to be no different. Nights like this are great for our current young crop of senior players to mix and mingle with past legends. Our annual black tie event is another not to be missed. Predict the top three sides at the end of the minor round: Paskeville, Ardrossan, Moonta. Predict the top three in the Mail Medal: Tyson Wait, Paskeville; Scott Dutschke, CY Cougars; Joel Palmer, Kadina.

PASKEVILLE Football and Netball Clubs Pasky hopes to go all the way With five teams in finals last year, Paskeville is hoping to build on this in 2016. “We were extremely competitive in all senior grades last season and had a strong finals campaign with all senior teams and our G grade making finals,” president Sally-Anne Heinrich said. “Unfortunately none of the teams made an appearance on grand final day so we’re looking forward to going one step further this year.” Paskeville had a healthy number registrations this season, with some new faces and some players returning after pregnancy, which the club is happy to welcome back. “We started preseason training early February and training has been in full swing for a few weeks now,” Heinrich said. “We’ve had a great turnout to all sessions. “Nikki Crickmay has been managing the fitness and Fiona Bussenschutt the netball sessions, both have a great level of knowledge in each field and our players will benefit immensely with their guidance.” Heinrich said the club is lucky to have a great bunch of juniors with supportive parents ready to help out. “They are enthusiastic and excited to play netball for Pasky!” she said. “We look forward to a big year of watching them develop their skills and teamwork.” Off the court, the netball club is working with the football club on its goods and services auction. It is also planning clinics with specialist coaches and a trip to see the Thunderbirds play during the season. Paskeville is in the process of getting new uniforms for next season, with merchandise director Meg Wilksch working tirelessly with the committee to get it in motion.

COURTSIDE with A grade coach Fiona Bussenschutt A grade team to beat in 2016 and why? The Crows will be tough and determined after just missing out last year and Moonta has collected an impressive list of players. A grade dark horse team and why? If the Southern Eagles girls continue their improvement from last year, they will be a tough team to beat. A grade player losses and gains? We have retained the majority of our player list and have Jade Daniel and myself returning for full seasons this year. Up-and-coming junior players at your club and why? SOUTHERN EAGLES Football and Netball Clubs Excitement building at Eagles COURTSIDE with A grade coach Lynlee Hancock A grade team to beat in 2016 and why? Pasky because it is around the mark every year. A grade dark horse and why? Eagles because as long as you have a team you always have a chance. A grade players losses and gains? Losses: Alice Hickman, Alanna Barrand, Cindy Rudduck and Jacki Allen. Gains: Pip Murdoch and Emily Bajcarz have returned, plus Katie Hocking coming from the Crows and Alanna Bowley is a new girl to the club. Up-and-coming junior players at your club and why? Sarah Ramsey, Jessie East and Jennifer Eisner are determined and smart young players who will be very handy in our future netball teams.
Eagles players are eager to hit the court in 2016, according to club president Madeleine Germein. “Training and preseason has been fantastic so far,” she said. “The girls are more than keen to get onto the court.” Germein said it’s been great to see so many dedicated and committed girls attending the Tuesday night fitness sessions and Thursday night trainings. All teams and coaching roles have been filled, with junior numbers up on last year. “We are so pleased to have so many determined junior girls learning to play netball,” Germein said. “Josie Rudduck, Danielle Johns and Bec Barlow are doing a fantastic job of developing the juniors into great future netball players.” Germein said there’s always something new or exciting happening around the club. “Last year, the committee started designing new uniforms and this project will be continued this season, hopefully being completed,” she said. “We are also so pleased to announce there will now be permanent sheds at the Yorketown courts thanks to a wonderful donation from Grant Sheds. “Sheds will also be permanent at the Edithburgh courts.” A number of the club’s umpires are working towards higher accreditation, with Anissa Thompson and Teresa Haywood in the regional umpire development program and aiming to earn their B grade badges soon. Josie and Gemma Rudduck are also working towards getting their C grade badges this season. The club is hoping to build on last year’s success, with several players receiving association trophies and the C and D grades winning premierships.

WALLAROO Football and Netball Clubs 2016 looking good for Wallaroo
INTO SENIORS... Ruby Shaw has been a dedicated and skilled junior netballer at Wallaroo and will gain experience in seniors this season.
COURTSIDE with A grade coach Georgia Hann A grade team to beat in 2016 and why? Considering last year’s premiers (Cougars) have had two major player losses, the Glasgow sisters, I am going to back CMS Crows for 2016 — they are an experienced side and play quality netball. A grade dark horse team and why? Definitely Moonta — they have picked up Kara Madden and she will be very handy. I think they will be strong finals contenders. A grade player losses and gains? We have lost Alannah Collins, myself (injured), Ella Shaw and Chelsea Murphy (both relocated to Adelaide). We have gained Jess Dickeson, Abbey Slade, Emily Cleggett and Jess Liddy. It will be a new team, still very young; however, the attitudes out there at preseason have been very positive and everyone is keen to give it a good crack. Up-and-coming junior players at your club and why? Ruby Shaw, who is coming up from E grade. She is eager to learn and always up for a challenge. For a young girl, Ruby can hold her own very well and isn’t afraid of a little physicality.
With good numbers attending preseason and trials, Wallaroo can’t wait to get into the season. “Our numbers are great this year with 73 players registered,” president Lyndall Neill said. “It is certainly pleasing to have a great cohort of players to choose from and really exciting to have four senior teams. “We have enough junior numbers to fill all sides which is excellent as last year we weren’t able to fill an H grade.” Neill said the club was happy with last season. “Although it may not have seemed that way on the ladder, our club did very well on the court and improved each week,” she said. “With the fundraising side of things, we were very proactive and we were all united. “We will be determined to exceed last year’s efforts, and be looking to improve even more on the ladder.” The club kicked off the season with player and personal trainer Meg Elliot getting the girls fit and a family fun day for junior football and netball players in March. With former A grade player Georgia Hann sidelined due to injury, she has taken on the A grade coaching role. Hann has a wealth of knowledge, having played at association, regional and state level. “Georgia comes from a very netball-focused background, she has played for Wallaroo since the age of 5, debuted in her first A grade game at 12 years of age and was permanently playing in Wallaroo A grade at the age of 16,” Neill said. “Georgia has a wonderful skill and knowledge base and is proving to be an absolute asset in developing our younger players and creating a true sense of camaraderie and team focus.” Wallaroo is also working towards a new joint football and netball canteen and relocating the courts closer to the football clubrooms.
2016 Coaches A grade — Georgia Hann B grade — Lyndall Neill C grade — Bec Sinton D grade — Bel Geidel E grade — Melissa Bennetts, Dana Cavanett F grade — Ruby Shaw G grade — Lisa Hanson, Jo Houghagen H grade — Mellissa Bennetts, Milly James.
YOUTH... Wallaroo has lost all of its outside players from 2015 but added some serious talent, and will benefit from the improvement of youngsters such as Matt Beadle.
Outside players gone, Bollmeyer brothers in With A grade coach Jamie Yeates How has your preseason been? We started preseason the last week of November. Who are the young players to watch? Jack Leighton, Zaine Holman, Bailey Hann, Angus Johns. What are the club’s aims this year? To play finals and get game time into some young locals who have real talent. What else is there to look forward to? Relocation of the netball courts closer to the clubrooms and the building of a shared canteen facility. Social events with the netball club are coming together. Predict the top three sides at the end of the minor round: Pasky, Moonta, Kadina. Predict the top three in the Mail Medal: Riley Westlake, Wallaroo; Joel Palmer, Kadina; Tyson Wait, Paskeville.
Snapshot Coaches: A grade, Jamie Yeates; B grade, Roy Price; senior colts, Scott Grillett; junior colts, John Zuringa. Saying hello: Josh Bollmeyer, Tea Tree Gully; Luke Bollmeyer, Hope Valley; Jack Bollmeyer, Norwood. Waving goodbye: All outside players from last year are gone to places unknown. Last season: fifth.

2016 YORKE PENINSULA FOOTBALL & NETBALL CLUB PREVIEW Tips and advice from the sidelines “The Coach’s Assistant” REPORT BY Netball fans, the season is finally here again, woo hoo! We have a new season with new rules and, yes, a new tipster. I have played plenty of netball in my time and am now helping from the sidelines with my advice. I’ll be doing my best to gather all the on and off-court gossip. A wise woman knows when to ask for help though, and I would love to include any news or funnies from around the clubs. Did someone forget their shoes? Rock up at the wrong venue? I want to know about it! You can contact me direct by emailing netty.tips@hotmail.com. The new rules will certainly make things interesting and with such significant changes it will take time for players and umpires to adjust. There have been some interesting player movements in the offseason, but more on that in the tips. I hope all four games this week are competitive, best of luck to everyone. Kadina has the bye so we’ll have to wait until next weekend to see how its side is looking. Southern Eagles v Wallaroo The Eagles have lost some handy players but always have talented juniors coming up the ranks and new faces popping up, so they’re a bit of an unknown at this stage.
Wallaroo has also lost some key players, but has had a solid preseason and is ready to hit the court. Goalie Georgia Hann will be a notable loss as she’s out with an injury, but it’s great to see she’s staying involved and has taken the reigns as A grade coach. She’ll have plenty of wisdom to impart, as will Eagles coach Lynlee Hancock, who has numerous premierships under her belt. At the final whistle ... Eagles by 6. CMS Crows v Ardrossan Last year’s runner-up CMS Crows have lost about half their side but will still boast a fairly handy line-up. Ardrossan, on the other hand, have only one key change — it has lost Madeline Kuhdnt but gained Lizzie Cane. Cane’s height and long arms will be advantageous in defence, particularly when up against the tall timber of Crows goal shooter Jess Cocks. The Crows have been flying close to the top for years now and I think they will probably get over the line here, but the Ardrossan girls showed plenty of potential last year and, with a season under their belts, will be even stronger. At the final whistle ... Crows by 7. CY Cougars v Bute There are a lot of unknowns about this game. Bute is without gun defender Marissa Hewett for the first time in a number of seasons, with playing coach Renee Drewett to
step up and lead from the front. Having Hannah Wellington back in the side will be handy for Bute. The Cougars line-up is also still a bit of a mystery to me — I know they have very few players left from last year’s premiership side so it will be interesting to see how they go. Jess Davies has taken on the coaching role and has plenty of experience and a good netball brain, which will be an asset for the Cougars. I’m going to tip Bute to chalk up an early win. At the final whistle ... Bute by 4. Paskeville v Moonta I’m tipping this to be the game of the round with two genuine finals contenders going head to head. Paskeville has only lost Lauren Elsworthy from last season and is welcoming back A grade stalwarts Fiona Bussenschutt and Jade Daniel for full seasons. Moonta, which was solid side last year, has added some big names. Gun goalie Tamara Lodge is playing permanently, with Narelle Koch returning and former Kadina defender Kara Madden also joining the ranks. This is a tough one to tip; I’m going to go with Pasky, which is the more settled side. I think once Moonta has a few games under its belt, it will be a force to be reckoned with. At the final whistle ... Paskeville by 3.
Plenty of line-up changes in YPFL “Half-back Flanker” REPORT BY The scent of steak sangas and deep heat is permeating the air, and club officials are ready to throw away copious amounts of money. Look at this list of talented Yorke Peninsula Football League players we can look forward to seeing: Josh Lawson, Willy Serle, Geoff Munn, Mark Dolling, Todd Price, Matt Rodda, Lachlan Carey, Nathan Wright, Brad Coles. Wait, nope. None of those blokes are playing. The 2015 grand finalists have been hit hardest. Reading this very rag a couple of weeks back I saw Pasky lost four previous best and fairest winners and Kadina will be without at least half a dozen of its top players. It might finally be a chance for these clubs to replenish the piggy banks, but will they still challenge for a flag? Moonta has loaded up. The Dees have pinched Chad Norsworthy off Wallaroo — can’t wait till those sides face off — and also have Nick Prokopec. This bloke played for Bute the other year and kicked about 10 goals every week while the entire Roosters team finished with 11. But Moonta’s biggest inclusion, mark my words, will be Ben Smelt. Will anyone else be up there? Ardrossan should be, jeez I like these fellas. But if Alby Pierson gets a gig for the Crows reserves in the SANFL that will be a big blow. The CY Cougars should also be better thanks to a couple of handy additions. For the Eagles, Coles is gone
again and Derek Clarke and Matty Allen are gone for the first time. I’m told they’ve got enough new faces to fill a whole side, how good will that side be? The Crows have lured back a lot of their local boys and Bute has continued its cycle of replenishing outside players in an effort to remain the slightest bit competitive. The Bute (slash Pasky) colts have won a couple of flags recently so better things should be on the horizon. Southern Eagles v Wallaroo How’s Wallaroo’s start to the season? Lose all your outside players — and I mean all of ’em — then make the long drive to Yorketown. The positive is, I reckon the Doggies have reloaded pretty well because those Bollmeyer brothers looked a class above running around in the dark during that trial game. I tell ya, bless Wallaroo for trying something different, but those boys should have taken a leaf out the book of their forefathers and run around with candles on their heads so the spectators could see what was happening. I think night footy is a long way off on Yorke Peninsula. But I digress, Wallaroo to win! At the final siren... Wallaroo by two goals. CMS Crows v Ardrossan The Crows have welcomed back some tall timber and some of their pups should be ready to emerge as snarling beasts after spending all last year chasing tails. Don’t think it’ll be enough to overcome the mighty Roos though. Recruit Brad Eagle should make up for the loss of
Jake Sutcliffe, and any other incoming players are the gravy on top of a roo steak for Ardrossan. The Crows might shock a few people this year, and I reckon they can finish in the top five. But Ardrossan should be aiming to finish top three, starting with an away victory. At the final siren... Ardrossan by four goals. CY Cougars v Bute The Cougars started like a shower of the old you-know-what last season but fell in a heap at the halfway mark after booting a couple of players. That short-term pain could result in a long-term gain as it set a new and improved standard for the club, which has resulted in a promising preseason. Some of the lads who got pumped in the twos grand final last year will have finished licking their wounds and push for A grade selection. Bute needs the same from its top B graders, except they finished bottom last year (not second like the Cougars). At the final siren... Cougars by eight goals. Paskeville v Moonta What a showdown to start the season — match of the round for certain. The reigning premiers, depleted, written off by many, and without their captain (Abraham Helfand will serve a suspension from the grand final) against the early-season premiership favourite. Moonta has been sniffing around the mark for a few years. Now it’s time to go one step better and taste that sweet premiership success. It’s a long way off, but a win at Pasky would be the perfect start. Delicious. At the final siren... Moonta by four goals.
