RAKES Foodland Wallaroo has been open to the public for more than a month now, but celebrations are still continuing. An official opening, featuring the unveiling of a plaque, will be held at the store starting 10.30am, Saturday, October 31. “We’ve been very, very happy with our first month and the support we’ve had from the local community,” Drakes marketing manager Ivan Eckermann said.
“It’s still early days but it has been better than we expected and we will continue to work to deliver a quality product.” District Council of the Copper Coast mayor Paul Thomas will have the honour of officially opening the centre. Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey and Member for Goyder Steven Griffiths will also be there. “All DCCC councillors have been invited to the open-
ing, as well as representatives from the Wallaroo Bowling, Golf and Croquet Clubs,” Mr Eckermann said. “Drakes general manager Bob Soang will also be in attendance, and we’re hopeful of representatives of Rosewarne’s Mitsubishi and Coca-Cola will be as well.” Drakes prides itself on providing a wide range of products for shoppers, and providing employment for the community.
An extra 45 staff have been employed to work in the centre, bringing numbers to more than 130. “We’re aware we still have things to work on, like installing more seating inside the centre,” Mr Eckermann said. “And we’re always willing to get other lines in if you can’t find the product you want. “We thank the local community and surrounding areas for their support.”

HE official opening of Drakes Foodland Wallaroo marks the end of the Win a Car from Drakes competition. Shoppers at the Wallaroo store, Cellarbrations Wallaroo and Drakes Foodland Moonta who spent $50 or more in one transaction (excluding tobacco, gift cards and commission sales such as phone recharge and dry cleaning) were put in the draw to win a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage. The winner will be drawn at the official opening. Drakes Foodland Wallaroo manager Matt Jones said there had been a lot of interest in the competition. “I’d say there have been more than 12,000 entries,” he said. Drakes marketing manager

HE Unley Property Group, which also built Target Kadina, is proud of the work it completed on the shopping centre. “We got involved in this project because we have built other Foodland projects in the past and have an established relationship with Drakes and Daycorp,” project and construction manager Shawn Aifandis said. “We welcomed the opportunity to work with them again.” Construction of the 4480-squaremetre centre took several months and included the Foodland supermarket, Cellarbrations liquor stores and nine other specialty stores.

Long journey comes to end T
HE completion and official opening of the Drakes Foodland Wallaroo store, and Wallaroo Shopping Centre, marks the end of a long process to redevelop the land. In 2007, the Wallaroo Bowling and Croquet Clubs agreed to relocate from the Owen Terrace site to Cornish Terrace. The District Council of the Copper Coast approved a proposal by Leasecorp to develop the site, which would feature a Woolworths and other specialty stores, in May 2008. Residents were unhappy with the choice of Woolworths as an anchor store and protested the decision at public meetings, through parliament and the ACCC. In December 2008, council voted no to a downsized proposal and then the following week Leasecorp withdrew from the development, citing commercial reasons. Expressions of interest were called in January 2011 to develop the site, and in March 2012 it was announced Drakes and Daycorp would be part of an agreement to secure the land, which was signed in 2013. Redevelopment of Owen Terrace including stormwater, kerbing, and the removal of Moreton Bay fig trees started in 2013. The land was sold for $1.91million in 2013 and demolition of the former bowls and croquet clubrooms started in October 2014. In January this year the walls started going up on the 4480 square metre centre and construction of the 551 car parks began. Foodland officially opened its doors on Wednesday, September 16.

Development achieves goal

HE Wallaroo Shopping Centre development has essentially created a new town centre. District Council of the Copper Coast mayor Paul Thomas will officially open the centre, and Drakes Foodland, on Saturday, October 31. “Without a doubt, the development has achieved what we want-
ed it to do,” Mr Thomas said. “The shopping centre, as well as the new verandahs and the redeveloped main street are benefitting everyone. “I’ve heard so many comments from people about how friendly the staff are at Drakes and throughout the town.” Drakes businesses have a strong sense of family and com-
munity, and Mr Thomas said it was evident in the Wallaroo store. “On the opening day, the managing director Roger Drake spent the day working,” Mr Thomas said. “The staff told me he didn’t want to be referred to as Mr Drake their boss, but just another staff member. It’s almost like a big family working there.”

HE Wallaroo Post Office will be the first business to move into the new Wallaroo Shopping Centre. Post office owners Gary and Tamara Houghton have been working hard during the past couple of weeks to relocate to the new premises. “We worked up until close at the old premises on Friday (October 23) and opened up at the new store on Monday morning,” Gary said. “The post office had been in its old location for more than 100 years so it is a very big move. “It is a great opportunity to be closer to the town centre and give residents the opportunity to get everything done in the one place. “The shop move had been delayed a little but we’ve had to do a big few weeks to get
ready on time.” Gary and Tamara bought the post office in February 2011 and the family-run business is committed long term to the area. “We still offer all the same services, and will soon be able offer ANZ banking, the last of the big banks to come on board with Bank@Post, and we have expanded our stock of giftware,” Gary said. “The number of post boxes we have is also increasing by 90, so there are more opportunities for residents living in non-delivery areas or require the security of a post office box.” Wallaroo Post Office can be found on the outside plaza of the Wallaroo Shopping Centre, at Shop 10, 2 Owen Terrace.
