2021 SEASON PREVIEW
Presenting the top 20 YPNA Ahead of the new netty season, the Yorke Peninsula Country Times presents a countdown of the best 20 Yorke Peninsula Netball Association players of the 2010s. This list has been created by a panel of local netball experts and enthusiasts. Each panelist was asked to list their top 20 players — the player they selected number one received 20 points, number two received 19, and so on. Each player featured in the countdown has special comments from our secret selectors. Did your favourite player of the decade make the list?
19 Jade Daniel, Paskeville “The silent assassin! Jade is a very underrated player who, when given a task, always completes it extremely well. Best played in the midcourt, but also capable in goals, she has been a big contributor to Pasky’s premierships and is great at keeping things calm in finals.”
18 Lana Bagshaw, Paskeville “An accurate shot, Lana has played an integral role in the Pasky A grade side as its GA. She always utilises the players around her to position herself comfortably under the ring and rarely misses. Lana always runs riot through the middle and provides plenty of opportunities in goals.”
17 Carrie Ramsey, Paskeville “Carrie has won four premierships and received many best and fairest awards including A grade association best and fairest in 2001. It’s a tribute to her ability and longevity that Carrie has still been considered one of the best netballers on YP in the following decade.”
20 Tamika Mackereth, Moonta and CY Cougars
16 Narelle Koch, Moonta SHOOTER… Lana Bagshaw’s accurate shooting has helped her teams to the top.
“A fantastic midcourt player, Narelle has always been an asset to Moonta’s A grade side. Narelle brings a passion to the court you don’t often see from a WD, a position most girls like to avoid. By far the best WD of the decade.”
MIDCOURT… Tamika Mackereth is a premiershipwinning midcourt player with speed and tenacity.
LONGEVITY… Carrie Ramsey was one of the league’s best players in the 2000s and continued her strong form well into the 2010s.
LEADERSHIP… Narelle Koch remained one of the best midcourt players in the association during the 2010s.

“One of the best midcourters in the game throughout the 2010s, Tamika can easily drive down the middle of the court and feed the ball into the goalies, or strongly defend the circle down the opposite end. There isn’t much Tamika can’t do with her speed, passion and netball smarts.”

players of the 2010s — 20-11 15 Hayley Gullery, Wallaroo and Kadina “Hayley came to Wallaroo as a defender before moving to Kadina. She is a very strong GK who teamed well with several other defenders during her tenures at both clubs.”
13 (TIE) Leanne Pridham, Paskeville “A force to be reckoned with in the circle, Leanne has been one of the best GKs in the game, especially when paired with GD Amie Price. Leanne is well known for her intense pressure and quick intercepts.”
DOMINANT… Hayley Spaans was arguably the best defender in local netball during the 2010s.
KEY COG… Lauren McSkimming was one of the CMS Crows’ most important players during their premiership tilts.
13 (TIE) DEFENSIVE PILLAR… Hayley Gullery stood tall in defence for Wallaroo and Kadina.
CONSISTENCY… Leanne Pridham used her height and reflexes to stop her opponents.
Hayley Spaans, CY Cougars and Moonta “Hayley won a pair of flags whilst playing with Moonta in 2007 and 2008, as well as a handful with the CY Cougars. She is a circle defender and is best known for her amazing reach and ability to read the play and intercept passes. She is also a very strong rebounder.”
12 Amie Price, Paskeville “Amie has been a major contributor to Pasky at the defensive end, consistently putting the pressure on her opposition. Her quick reflexes and long reach can always impact a game, and she provides plenty of drive moving the ball forward.”
11 Lauren McSkimming, CMS Crows EFFORT… Amie Price helped Paskeville to a highly successful decade thanks to her effort and athleticism in defence.
“One of many talented sporting sisters, Lauren has become a vital mainstay in the CMS Crows’ A grade side. Lauren is a very strong defender who will jump at any opportunity to rebound the ball and cause grief to the opposing goalies.”

2021 SEASON PREVIEW
Presenting the top 20 YPNA 10 Jacinta Lycett, CMS Crows “Jacinta had a strong presence in the goal circle for the Crows, seemingly unable to miss. Her tenure on Yorke Peninsula was short lived but she was arguably the most dominant player in the competition during her time.”
ACCURATE… Tamara Lodge was one of the most difficult shooters to stop in local netball and also made an impact further up the court.
8 (TIE) Amanda Pitt, CMS Crows “A great leader on and off the court, Amanda has become a household name at the Crows. She has excelled as an A grade player and coach, and has helped lead the Crows to multiple premierships.”
8 (TIE) Adele Keleher, Moonta “Adele has been a standout player both in defence and in goals, plus even the odd stint at WA. She is a natural leader and team-first player, and has been a key cog in Moonta’s best teams for a long time.”
HIGH LEVEL… Before she joined the national competition, Sasha Glasgow was a premiership-winning shooter for the CY Cougars.
7 Marissa Hewett, Bute “Marissa has been Bute’s best and most consistent A grade player for many years. Her skills in the goal circle are second to none and she is a great role model for the next generation of players at the Roosters.”
6 Ebonie Salter, CMS Crows “Ebonie has been a very strong GD for the Crows and her physical presence allowed her to dominate, especially with her brilliant rebounding ability. A confident and controlling team member.”

2021 SEASON PREVIEW
players of the 2010s — 10-1 2 Fiona Bussenschutt, Paskeville
3 (TIE)
“Fiona has played and dominated at both goal ends for Paskeville. As a goalie, she is well above average but, when she has been able to play in defence, she has been the league’s premier defender for many years. A very smart netballer with the skills and high-level experience to match, Fiona has also spent years nurturing up-and-coming players.”
Tegan Young, CMS Crows “Tegan moves exceptionally well through the midcourt and can play in goals as well when needed. Tegan has been a great asset to her team from a young age, and also had a successful coaching stint.”
3 (TIE)
STALWART… Fiona Bussenschutt has been the heart and soul of Paskeville during its successful 2010s run, both as a defender and a shooter.
Sasha Glasgow, Kadina, Moonta and CY Cougars “Sasha played her juniors for Kadina and Moonta before swapping to the CY Cougars to be their go-to goalie in their A grade side. She combined well with her sister Isabelle in goals to help the Cougars win the 2015 premiership. Glasgow began her professional netball career at the Thunderbirds as a training partner in the 2017, and now plays for the West Coast Fever in the Suncorp Super Netball League.”
3 (TIE) Tamara Lodge, Moonta “Cool, calm and collected — and deadly accurate. Tamara is a very good GS/GA who sets up and controls the play in her team’s attacking end. She is not the tallest goalie but uses her athleticism and smarts to her advantage and can shoot from long range. These attributes have helped her to have a long and exceptional career.”
NUMBER ONE… A panel of local experts has voted Crows midcourt star Felicity Kemp to be the number-one best Yorke Peninsula netballer of the 2010s.
1 Felicity Kemp, CMS Crows “Felicity has been a powerhouse centre and midcourt player for the CMS Crows and has led their A grade side to multiple premierships. She creates plenty of opportunities for her teammates and her experience settles the side well. Felicity is a multiple association best and fairest award winner and her impressive resumé shows exactly why she has been voted the best player of the decade.”

YP’s Team of the Decade 2010-2020
FORWARD:
HALF FORWARD:
Angus Poole
Matt Appleton
AN SANFL reserves Magarey Medallist (he lost a second after a suspension), “Pooley” is the quintessential teammate. Not much into fanfare or outside admiration, Poole is tough at the contest and with an ability to find the goal, and is now a SANFL league premiership player. His 2020 grand final performance was outstanding.
The 2012 Alan Stewart Medallist as best on ground in the SANFL under-18s grand final, Appleton is noted for his one-touch ball use, and has now played more than 50 SANFL league games across three clubs — Woodville-West Torrens, North Adelaide and now Port Adelaide.
Jarrad Redden A 205cm ruckman with wonderful skills for a big man, Jarrad Redden is a dual premiership player at Woodville-West Torrens, enjoying the 2011 and 2020 flags. A strong option up forward as well, Redden is an outstanding contested mark. His AFL career was restricted to 16 games, derailed by injury.
Boyd Woodcock
WORKHORSE… Angus Poole has been a star for Woodville-West Torrens, dominating at reserves level before securing a permanent spot in the league side.
LAWYERS AND CONVEYANCERS Yorke Peninsula
Jay Schulz Schulz was a first-round draft pick for Richmond. After 71 games with the Tigers, he was traded to Port Adelaide and became an elite forward for the Power, winning the club leading goal-kicker award on four occasions. He finished his AFL career with 193 games and 330 goals, and was noted for his accuracy.
Malcolm Karpany
A forward with real X-factor, Boyd Woodcock may be small in stature but has found a way to beat the odds. A Tompkins-McCallum Medallist as the SANFL’s best under-18 player, and SANFL premiership player with North Adelaide, Woodcock made his AFL debut last year.
A mercurial talent, and like Appleton an Alan Stewart Medallist, Karpany was plucked out of the under 18s to make his SANFL league debut. Selected by West Coast with pick number 31, he was on the Eagles’ AFL list for five years, playing seven games. After returning to SA, he was a marquee player for South Adelaide.
SKILLED… Jarrad Redden’s AFL career was cruelled by injury but he has been one of the best big men in the SANFL, playing in ruck and up forward.
DEAD-EYE… Jay Schulz is one of the best forwards Yorke Peninsula has produced, and was the Power’s spearhead for much of the 2010s.
Come and enjoy our amazing venue and take in the relaxing waterfront views!

2021 SEASON PREVIEW CENTRE:
HALF BACK:
Giles Ellis
Matthew Goldsworthy
Lissom in movement, Ellis came through the ranks at WoodvilleWest Torrens and had a brief tenure at league level, including playing in the 2014 league grand final. He returned to rural football and played state country football in Perth in 2019.
Goldsworthy was an outstanding junior talent at both cricket and football. He chose footy and debuted at SANFL league level in 2008, still in his mid-teens. A classy left footer, he is now a dual premiership player at the Eagles and in 2020 achieved the 200-game SANFL milestone. Goldsworthy has the capacity to impact strongly in all three zones of the ground.
Angus Rowntree Rowntree played 100 SANFL games for Woodville-West Torrens but his career was interrupted by injuries including a pair of knee reconstructions. He missed out on the Eagles’ 2011 flag due to illness, and in 2015 when he was club champion and runner-up in the Magarey Medal, his knee injury in the second semifinal had a devastating effect on the club’s premiership hopes. Smart, skilful and creative, Rowntree is a footballer’s footballer.
Cameron Sutcliffe
ENDURANCE… Cameron Sutcliffe had a solid AFL career with Fremantle and then the Power, playing mostly in defensive roles, and now captains the Port Magpies.
After an impressive junior career, von Bertouch was rookie listed by the Adelaide Crows, but his short tenure was devoid of opportunities. Woodville-West Torrens coach Michael Godden turned von Bertouch into an athletic marking defender, before he displayed the ability he had shown as a junior to be equally potent as a marking key forward. A member of the Eagles’ 2020 premiership side.
Scott McMahon
A player known for getting the most out of his ability, Sutcliffe is the captain of the Port Adelaide Magpies and a 100-game AFL footballer, predominately with Fremantle — where he was in a losing grand final side — plus a couple of seasons at Alberton. He was skipper of the Magpies in 2019, returning again to this role in 2021, is a natural leader and is noted for his endurance, work ethic and team-orientated nature.
An All Australian at under-18 level, McMahon had a long apprenticeship before his AFL debut with North Melbourne in 2007. A reliable defender, with a no-nonsense approach to the game, he played 124 games with the Roos before returning to SANFL football and playing a strong role in Sturt’s consecutive flags of 2016 and 2017.
VERSATILE… Jake von Bertouch is one of the SANFL’s premier swingmen, capable of holding down a key position in defence or in front of goal.
GREAT CAREER… Scott McMahon was a dependable defender for North Melbourne before becoming one of Sturt’s most important players.

2021 SEASON PREVIEW FIRST RUCK: Sam Jacobs A late bloomer, as many ruckmen are, Jacobs debuted at SANFL level and play 13 games in Woodville-West Torrens’ 2006 premiership season. After being the number-one selection in the 2006 AFL rookie draft, Jacob spent four years at Carlton, finally debuting in round one, 2009. Jacobs was traded to the Crows in 2011, and became Adelaide’s lynchpin in the ruck for the decade. He spent the 2020 season with the GWS Giants before retiring having played 208 AFL games.
Bernie Vince Vince was a standout in the SANFL finals series of 2005 for Woodville-West Torrens. He was drafted by Adelaide and played 129 games for the Crows, winning the 2009 Malcolm Blight Medal as club best and fairest. He was traded to Melbourne, playing a further 100 matches and winning the Dees’ 2015 best and fairest, the Bluey Truscott Medal. Vince also won the Michael Tuck Medal in the Crows’ 2012 preseason grand final win.
BACK: Cameron Hewett The youngest of the four Hewett siblings from a farm outside Port Broughton, Cam’s quiet demeanour conceals his competitive nature. A versatile and clean footballer, Hewett played 64 games with the Port Magpies while on the Power’s AFL list after being rookie drafted in 2015. He spent the 2020 season in the North Adelaide midfield.
George Hewett After an outstanding junior, college and state underage career, Hewett was selected by the Swans in the 2013 draft. He spent two seasons in the NEAFL, before debuting in round 1, 2016. Hewett played in an AFL grand final in his first year and won the Adam Goodes Medal in 2019. After back surgery in 2020, Hewett became a 100-game AFL player in round 1 this season.
Jake Summerton After a significant tenure with Woodville-West Torrens that yielded just two league games, Summerton received an opportunity at South Adelaide and made the key defensive role his own. In 2020 he passed the 50-game landmark. Noted for his discipline, Summerton is now among the leadership group at the Panthers.
Nathan Daniel After strong performances and leadership at college level, Daniel received his first opportunities with Woodville-West Torrens, before becoming a regular with South Adelaide, predominately across half back. Equally adept at playing defensive or rebounding roles, Daniel played 131 league games, 101 of them for South Adelaide from 2010 to 2016.
RUCK STAR… Sam Jacobs was one of the decade’s best ruckmen with Adelaide. Right: DUAL B&F… Bernie Vince starred for Adelaide and then Melbourne, winning a best and fairest at each club. Top left: MID-DEFENDER… Cameron Hewett made an AFL list and played well at SANFL level as a defender for Port before asserting himself as a midfielder with North Adelaide.

2021 SEASON PREVIEW INTERCHANGE: Luke Ivens While the majority of his career was across the 2000s, Ivens finished his SANFL career in 2013 having played 194 games. The hard-running and creative defender was the Roosters’ best and fairest back in 2005.
Dylan Hewett His two years at SANFL level were injury riddled but Dylan Hewett, a cousin of Cameron and George, started with a goal with his first kick and showed a lot of promise. He has had an outstanding country footy career.
Ben Edwards Edwards had a few seasons with minimal opportunities at Glenelg, before starting to blossom under Matthew Lokan as a key marking forward at Port Adelaide in 2019.
Eddie Sansbury
COACH:
The silky smooth Sansbury export won three flags with Central District — 2003, 2009 and 2010 — along with being the Norm Russell Medallist as the club’s best and fairest in 2011. He played 40 games with North Melbourne in between his two tenures at Centrals, during which he accumulated 98 league games.
Hayden Skipworth Skipworth followed a successful SANFL and AFL career by moving into coaching at Essendon. He had development roles, coached at VFL level for the Bombers and also had AFL assistant coaching roles with Essendon, before moving across to Collingwood and becoming an assistant to Nathan Buckley.
EMERGENCIES: Jack Elsworthy Small defender Elsworthy received his first SANFL opportunities with Port Adelaide, debuting against his foundation SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens. He has more recently started to make his mark at South Adelaide.
STATE COUNTRY… Dylan Hewett has played state country and SANFL footy in addition to starring for Broughton-Mundoora. Left: KEY TALL… Ben Edwards was a standout player at local and SANFL level, excelling as a ruckman, defender and forward. Top right: AFL COACH… Hayden Skipworth has turned his AFL playing career into a high-level coaching appointment.
Jake Westbrook On the edge of SANFL selection with Woodville-West Torrens for years, playing 29 senior games, reliable defender Westbrook has moved to Port Adelaide this season.
Will Hewett The second oldest of the Hewett siblings, Will is arguably the most naturally gifted of the quartet. After an outstanding SA Country Championships in Port Lincoln where he collected a Barrie Robran Medal, Will played a small handful of games for Central District.

How important is it for you and Ardrossan’s fellow star exports to get back to the club? It’s great a few former players can give something back to the club and community. We’ve always talked about coming back home eventually, so it’s great the stars could align. The league’s in really good shape and we look forward to testing ourselves against some quality opposition.

Coaches for 2021 A grade — Sam Jacobs (playing coach) B grade — Nick Brind Senior Colts — N/A Junior Colts — Scott Teakle and Greg Wheare U11s — Bradley Channon
Will you have an assistant coach helping you? My good mate Tom Van Schaik will help me from the bench this year. We always spoke about coaching together and this will help him get back into footy after his previous affiliation with the (Central Yorke) Cougars. Has there been much anticipation building prior to the season? We’ve only been to the finals twice since 2011, so there’s plenty of anticipation and everyone’s really excited for the year ahead.
Player Movement Welcome: Sam Jacobs (ruckman), Greater Western Sydney; Angus Rowntree (midfielder), Woodville-West Torrens; Josh Lawson (midfielder), Orroroo; Sam Pfeiffer (key defender), Rambler; Sam Roads (midfielder), RSMU; Nathan Pierson (forward), Henley.
What style of play will you look to implement this year? We’ll hopefully play an attacking, balanced style of footy, but will work it out more as the season unfolds. Which young player(s) should the league look out for this year? Nick Dayman and Tysen Harrison. Team to beat? CMS Crows.

How is the club looking in terms of player/ volunteer numbers after having last year off? The A and C grades are looking a lot stronger than we have had for many years when it comes to the number of players we have so far. We are hoping our volunteers jump on board once the season starts.

How did Bute’s 2020 season in the Adelaide Plains Football League benefit your playing group? Last season was really good for our club, as we were able to play nine more games as a group than any other YPFL team. I was able to build relationships with the players, so now I can concentrate on understanding the brand of the (YPFL) this year.
which has been a key message amongst the club. We have lots of players hitting the 21-23 age bracket now, so hopefully we’ll continue to add experience and push for finals.
What are a few on-field focuses you’ll take into the season? We’ll run an 18-man press, use lots of rotations and use our fleetness of foot to hopefully keep our fast game pace which worked well for us last year.
Which young player(s) should the league look out for this year? Ethan Brownlie.
What is your overall goal this year? Hopefully we can translate our minor round success last year into the YPFL, and ultimately gain some respect

How is the club looking in terms of player/volunteer numbers after having last year off? We’ve started with strong numbers in our senior grades but our junior numbers are a bit light on in the G and H grades. However, we’ve been fortunate to gain some new faces in both juniors and seniors this year. For a small community we have an amazing group of volunteers. Without our volunteers the club wouldn’t run as efficiently as it does, so we take great pride in each and every one of these people. There’s enthusiasm and a buzzing vibe around the club, with our committee and players all ready to get back into netball this year after the break with COVID-19.
Coaches for 2021 A grade – Jane McCauley B grade – Sarah Bailey C grade – Mikayla Gralbraith D grade – Denatah Treloar and Bree Marks E grade – Karen Green assisted by Charlotte Rose F grade – Matilda Jones G grade – Tam Gill H grade – Jane Price
What are your plans for preseason and what do you want to see from the players at trainings? Preseason has had good numbers with Tyra Wigzell running beach sessions, followed by fitness sessions back at Bute on the court, and a mixed netball night with the footballers. That’s always a bit of fun and a great way to show our players we’re part of one club. At trainings we want to see commitment and players having a go.
Key players lost from 2019: Dani Richardson and Jess Morony. Key player gains for 2021: Alex Wehr (Balaklava), Lucy Dixon (Balaklava), Chelsea Smith (Adelaide).
What will be some key focuses for the group this season? As always, our main focus is to get as many players out to training each week as we can. A main focus at Bute is to get our younger girls more experienced in senior netball. Developing these younger players is so important to us as they are the future of our club. We also love to grow the relationships between junior and senior netballers at Bute and will continue on with our buddy nights and programs this year.
A-B squad: “We’ll be holding trials in the next couple of weeks but some familiar names may include Bree Taylor, Charlotte Rose, Hannah Wellington, Marissa Hewett, Britt Herbert, Zara Herbert and Sydney Wigzell,” A grade coach Jane McCauley, at time of print.
Who are some younger up-and-coming players for your supporters to keep an eye on this year? We are really excited to see some of our younger players join us in seniors this year as they didn’t quite get the chance last year, including Ella McCauley and Olivia Elsworthy in the attacking end and Shayla Herbert in defence.
BUZZING VIBE... Charlotte Rose and the Bute Netball Club are enthusiastic about the 2021 season after a year off due to COVID-19.
Who do you think will be the teams to beat this year? Moonta and Crows have proven to be strong in the past few years and there’s no doubt they will be tough competition again.

RETURNING... Playing coach Brett Baillie is excited for the year ahead, and will welcome back former premiership teammates including James Moss, Adam Jolly and Angus Aldenhoven.
Snapshot Where do you think your on-field improvement will come from? We had a very young side in the 2019 grand final (loss), but have plenty of leadership experience coming in with our new recruits and some key position players too. We exceeded expectations in 2019 and hopefully we’ll be around the mark again. What are you hoping to achieve this season? We had about 15 A grade players benefit from playing elsewhere last year and both senior teams look strong, so we’ll be looking to go deep into finals again. How have your trainings been so far? We’ve averaged more than 30 players at home trainings and have had good numbers in town since starting in the first week of December. How is the footy community feeling prior to the season? There’s been a bit of anticipation building with us bringing some former premiership stars back and welcoming some others. Which young player(s) should the league look out for this year? How do you feel in anticipation of the upcoming season? I am excited about how the 2021 season is looking for the mighty Cougars. The 2019 season was disappointing and 2020 prevented us having a chance to turn things around. The recruiting team has done an excellent job with injecting some new and returning footballers to the club. What will you look to focus on when you cross the white line? This year, we have the squad to beat any opposition on our day, but it is just a matter of playing the game on our terms and bringing the right attitude each and every week. What are your long-term goals for the club? We are looking to build a strong core group of young players who will see us through the next 10 years with success. Which young player(s) should the league look out for this year? Max Dutschke, Oscar Hollams, Lachie Whittaker, Oscar Moore and Conan Petch. Team to beat? Ardrossan. Dark horse? Central Yorke.
STRONG MIX... Alex Greenslade is among the veteran players who will help lead a new-look Cougars, full of promising youngsters and wellcredentialed recruits.
Events around the club? Meet and Greet for new players, away guernsey launch and special presentation — Round 1 v Paskeville at Maitland on Saturday, April 10.

How is the club looking in terms of player/volunteer numbers after having last year off? Player numbers are strong, we have seen an influx of senior players with new club members and the return of club juniors to play as seniors after a few years away. Our junior numbers are also strong, but not to excess like in recent years. We have filled all club positions with some gentle encouragement and are pleased to see some new committee members. The old faithfuls continue to be involved in the club, with three former presidents still serving on the committee. The knowledge and experience is there — we would like to see some of our senior players step up and take on some roles around the club, but this seems to be a common theme with other clubs. The old adages that many hands make light work and if you want something done, ask a busy person, still ring true and are probably messages that need to be considered by club members.
with A grade coach Janine Burrows
Snapshot Club secretary Brooke Davies 0418 810 638 brookedavies6@hotmail.com
What are your plans for preseason and what do you want to see from the players at trainings? We have been holding trainings most Tuesday and Thursday nights for seniors and I’d like to see more attendance! We held a fun and social registration day with about 20 ladies participating in a race around Maitland. Our biggest attendance for preseason training so far is 19 seniors, so we will need to amp this up as we consider team selections.
Coaches for 2021 A grade – Janine Burrows B grade – Sarah Luke C grade – Jessica Davies D grade – Sheree Crowe E grade – Tayla Barrand F grade – Mia Whittaker G grade – Janine Burrows H grade – TBA
What will be some key focuses for the group this season? Consistency will be a big thing for our group this year. We have a lot of new faces and we are excited for the season to come. Getting these girls to know each other, both on and off the court, will be a big goal for the start of the season. I hope we can run out more games without our typical third-quarter fade out. I also hope we can play netball well into September.
Key players lost from 2019: Taitlyn Tilbrook, Iluka Smith, Amelia Davey, Emma Stuart.
Who are some younger up-and-coming players for your supporters to keep an eye on this year? We have a number of girls playing their first year as senior netballers who, having missed their opportunity to play in 2020, are raring to go including Mia Whittaker, Georgia Hasting, Annabel Whittaker and Sophie Baker.
Key player gains for 2021: Chloe Linke (Walkerville Cats), Sophie Wehr (Immanuel College), Alana Barrand (Southern Eagles), Jess Moroney (Bute), Sarah Browning (Paskeville). We also are pleased Bec Carey, Jess Dutschke, Eona Petch, Olivia Dyett, Hilary Davies, Eleanor Mack and Abbie Morris are back to our club this season. A-B squad: Sarah Luke, Lana Bagshaw, Tayla Barrand, Laura Cassidy, Tamika Mackereth, Alix Hillebrand, Bridget McEvoy, Shayla Graham, Bethan Sly, Sheree Tezacker, Georgina Davies, Hilary Davies, Chloe Linke, Sophie Wehr, Charity Sellick, Bec Carey, Jess Moore, Charlotte Nixon, Jess Moroney.
STRONG NUMBERS... Tamika Mackereth and the CY Cougars will line up for the 2021 season with strong junior and senior numbers.
Who do you think will be the teams to beat this year? This question is a tough ask — after having last year off of senior netball, this year is a bit of an unknown. Ardrossan has some good recruits, which will certainly strengthen its A grade and therefore flow through its whole club. But other sides are going to be a bit of a surprise, particularly in terms of player movements. I expect to see a lot of new faces for a lot of clubs, which is exciting for the association.

Coaches for 2021 As a new coach, what have been some of your key messages this preseason? Delivering the same message to our Kadina and Adelaide-based players has been a challenge, but other clubs face this as well. We’ve got a really young and exciting list, so I’m hoping to be supportive and bring some structure to our side.

Player Movement
What have you noticed about the players so far? It’s great to see people who love footy as much as you, and having young fellas invested in the game. It’s just a matter of making sure everyone keeps enjoying the game and the ladder will look after itself.
Welcome: George Hannaford (midfielder), Prince Alfred College; Ben Turley (forward), Mawson Lakes; Cam Faulkner (forward), South Augusta.
How will you look to develop your team as the season progresses? Ultimately, I want to teach them how to play together. There will be times when we’re up and about and others when it’s not our day, but it’s about how quickly we can become consistent. Soon, we’ll be looking at how much of our training is instinctive and which areas we need to develop.
Farewell: Bryce Woolard, Prince Alfred College.
How are trainings looking so far? We’ve been pretty strong for numbers since starting at the beginning of the year and would probably have more than 40 players if we joined together.
YOUNG CORE... Giles Ellis and Kadina are expected to continue building with a young side this year.
Which young player(s) should the league look out for this year? Jordy Cunningham and Taj Kleinig. Team to beat? Ardrossan, CMS Crows, Moonta, Southern Eagles. Dark horse? Bute. What’s happening around the club? New floodlights have been installed and are ready for use.

TEAMWORK... Kadina A grade, including Sophie Driver, will have a focus on building a strong team culture on and off the court this season.

Snapshot Club secretary Sophie Driver 0427 148 605 kadinanetballclub@gmail.com
How is the club looking in terms of player/ volunteer numbers after having last year off? We have good numbers with lots of enthusiasm to get back out on the court. Seniors are now in their fourth week of training.
Coaches for 2021 A grade – Amanda Schultz assisted by Dianna Von Bertouch B grade – Courtney Stephens C grade – TBA D grade – TBA E grade – Nikkita Aldridge and Chloe Barrett F grade – Kirsty Rawlinson and Kristen Mieglich G grade – Saraya Mercer and Georgia Flowers H grade – Tenille Ziersch Net Set Go – Cerys Kirkwood
What are your plans for preseason and what do you want to see from the players at trainings? Our biggest focus is to work hard together, with lots of banter and building a strong culture both on and off court. There will be lots of talk and positive energy! What will be some key focuses for the group this season? We want to have a focus on players self-reflecting as to what parts of their game they can develop and what their personal goals are. Who are some younger up-and-coming players for your supporters to keep an eye on this year? We have a number of young players who have a lot of talent and drive. Across our seniors we have Sophie Franz, Ebony Mustard and Meg Lock just to name a few. It’s great to see a lot of our E grade players from the past few years out on the court giving it their best.
Key players lost from 2019: Isabelle Glasgow, Grace Chapman. Key player gains for 2021: We have a number of new faces in our senior squad across various positions. The girls will line up with a good mix of tall timber and young blood.
Who do you think will be the teams to beat this year? There’s no going past Moonta, and always Paskeville, but it would be great if every game is really competitive with no firm predictions who will take the points each week.

How has your club culture been tracking amid last year’s season cancellation? It’s been great to bring back a group of locals this year and continue breeding good culture.
Player Movement
What will be your focus when you take the field this season? We’ll mainly be looking to back ourselves with an attacking mindset and take the game on.
Welcome: Malcom Karpany (midfielder), South Adelaide; Dylan Aldridge (midfielder/defender), North Adelaide, now Port Adelaide Magpies listed; Matt Altmann (forward), Broughton-Mundoora; Kieran Yakas (ruckman), Rambler; Tyler Kelly (wingman), Sacred Heart; Alex Elsworthy (midfielder), Bute.
What has the feeling been at training and around the club lately? We didn’t have many players at all play last year, so we started training in November and have averaged about 25 players out in Adelaide and 30 at home. There’s plenty of anticipation and excitement because we all just want to get back on the park. How are your volunteer numbers looking since not playing last year? Led by our president, we still have a good core of volunteers and haven’t lost any numbers. Our players have also been great in volunteering during the offseason.
Farewell: Jono Ross, Kersbrook; Travis Natt, retired; Lachy Everitt, year off.
Which young player(s) should the league look out for this year? Aidan Turner. Team to beat? Ardrossan.
MIDFIELD MAGNIFICENCE... Reigning Mail Medallist Tyler Andrews will be part of a dangerous midfield unit for the Demons this year.
Dark horse? Paskeville. What’s happening around the club? Recent launch of the new club website, involving details about merchandise, membership, sponsorship, social and fundraising events, as well as fixtures and results. Fore more information visit moontafc.com.au.

FOCUS ON FINALS... Libby Adams and the Moonta Demons will have a focus on playing finals netball after winning the 2019 A grade premiership.
with A grade coach
Michelle Hatcher
How is the club looking in terms of player/ volunteer numbers after having last year off? Moonta Netball Club is very fortunate to have an amazing committee full of members who are happy to help in every aspect and we are working together as a great team. As we had a season off, the club was due for a few upgrades. We had to get new rings as the present ones had been vandalised, and repair the shed which had storm damage. The clubrooms had been inundated with spiders so we did a major clean of the clubrooms and the kitchen, and weeds around the courts. On the courts, Moonta has filled all teams — we had plenty of players sign up for juniors and seniors.
Snapshot Club secretary Shelley Hier 0417 863 661 shelhi@yahoo.com.au
What are your plans for preseason and what do you want to see from the players at trainings? Our plans are to focus on getting back to playing the way we were back in season 2019, with fitness and skills being a priority and also having fun on and off the court.
Coaches for 2021 A grade – Michelle Hatcher assisted by Adele Keleher B grade – Sue Beech C grade – Kate Maitland and Emily Cook D grade – Narelle Williams assisted by Teneika Nitschke E grade – Kenzie Weltman F grade – Bella Congdon G grade – Narelle Koch and Tamara Lodge H grade – Rebecca Willmott
What will be some key focuses for the group this season? Key focuses will be getting familiar with some new players on court and playing strong netball ensuring we are focusing on playing finals. Who are some younger up-and-coming players for your supporters to keep an eye on this year? Amber Aldridge filled in for the A grade last season and this will be her first full year playing senior netball. Emma Prout and Emily Jolly were key players in the 2019 E grade premiership side, along with Amber, and they are all playing seniors this year.
Key players lost from 2019: Alex Prokopec, Lauren Pratt, Lucy Prior, Claudia Hatcher, Brooke Irlam.
Who do you think will be the teams to beat this year? This is a very difficult question to answer, we don’t take any opposition lightly. Crows and Kadina are always very strong in all grades.

What on-field focuses will you take into the new season? We have a pretty young side so have been concentrating on our fitness and will look to play a high-running game. What are you hoping to achieve overall? We’re looking for as many wins as possible and, although it’s a pretty strong competition this year, we think we’ve got what it takes. Since not playing last year, it’s important we enjoy our footy as that’s what country sport is all about. How are trainings looking this preseason? Our numbers have been good, we’ve had up to 50 lads to training some nights altogether. Have you maintained most of your volunteers during the break? Pasky has always been great in the volunteer aspect, but this year we’re better than ever. Which young player(s) should the league look out for this year? Jackson Murphy.

Amanda Carmichael How is the club looking in terms of player/volunteer numbers after having last year off? We have really positive numbers for all squads, which is great to see after the false start of last season. The netball community at Pasky has pulled together again and we look forward to a successful 2021. What are your plans for preseason and what do you want to see from the players at trainings? It has been great to see so many players back out at training, and we have been lucky enough to enjoy a couple of good trial matches in the lead up to the season. What will be some key focuses for the group this season? Teamwork, clean and consistent netball, and 110 per cent effort will be some key focuses. Who are some younger up-and-coming players for your supporters to keep an eye on this year? Throughout our A and B squad keep an eye out for Lucy Bussenschutt, Chloe Turley, Charlotte Hogan and Taylor Larson — all young players with plenty of potential! Who do you think will be the teams to beat this year? Crows you would expect to be up there again, but the dark horse Ardrossan has apparently recruited well so expect the Roos to be competitive.

What are your plans for preseason and what do you want to see from the players at trainings? We really want to see fitness combined with strength and agility, as most players didn’t play a season last year, and obviously getting right into ball work. I would like to see all players push themselves and go outside their comfort zones this season. What will be some key focuses for the group this season? Playing as a team and making sure the players enjoy their netball, and obviously winning will be a key focus this year. Who are some younger up-andcoming players for your supporters to keep an eye on this year? Gemma Goldsmith, Caitlin Roads, Indilee Pedler, Taneesha Flemming. What will be some key focuses for the group this season? Some key focuses for us will include team bonding. A lot of junior players have come up into senior grades so we want everyone to jell really well in their respective teams on and off the court. We had a beach volleyball bonding day with the football club in March. There is a really good vibe at Wallaroo this season.
How is the club looking in terms of player/volunteer numbers after having last year off? We have great senior numbers which we are very grateful for after the year off. I think girls are keen to get back into netball for fitness and socialising after such an unprecedented 2020. However, we are low on junior numbers and definitely need more players to fill the H and F grades.

Who are some younger upand-coming players for your supporters to keep an eye on this year? We have a lot of talented juniors who have come up into seniors this year but the ones to watch would include Jorja Rogers in defence and Skyler Smith in goals.
What are your plans for preseason and what do you want to see from the players at trainings? Preseason for us began at the start of February and we have a big focus on fitness this year. Trainings will now go for two hours with the first hour dedicated to improving our fitness and being able to run out a full game of netball. We also want to see dedication from our players across the board — no excuses this year.
Who do you think will be the teams to beat this year? I think all teams across the board will be competitive and keen to get back out onto the netball court. Moonta and Paskeville are always strong but I think Cougars could be the dark horse this year.

2021 SEASON PREVIEW
Predicting the year ahead “The Injury Sub” REPORT BY
We are days away from the first round of local footy in 18 months and I couldn’t be more excited. I’ve had my ear to the ground all preseason and all local teams are showing plenty of enthusiasm as they prepare to get back into the swing of things. The league also has some big days planned, from the annual Anzac Day clash and pink round
to the Kernewek Lowender game and, for the first time locally, an Indigenous round. Undoubtedly the biggest news this offseason — as it is every offseason — centres on the recruits different clubs have brought in to bolster their A grades. No team has made bigger waves than Ardrossan, and I’ll get to them, but I want to make this piece a prediction for the season as a whole so I’m going to start with the side I think is in pole position:
1 Moonta There is a lot of excitement about Sam Jacobs returning to Ardrossan, but let’s not forget Moonta has also brought home an AFL-level talent. Malcolm Karpany played some cracker games for West Coast but it was a tough side to get into as a small forward and injuries didn’t help his cause. Playing for South Adelaide last year, Karpany was absolutely dominant, displaying the clean skills, composure and goal sense that made him a jet at underage level for Moonta and a high AFL draft pick. The crazy thing about Karpany joining Moonta is that he will be joined in the midfield by Port Magpies player Matt Appleton and Mail Medallists Tyler Andrews and Dylan Mansell. All are in their absolute primes. Who does coach Luke Pridham leave out of the starting midfield? Oh, and Moonta has also added Matt Altmann, a key forward/ruckman who almost won the Mail Medal for the premiership-winning Broughton-Mundoora Eagles last year. Oh, and the Dees will have access to another homegrown high-level player in defender Dylan Aldridge — if he’s not selected in the SANFL. It’s hard not to consider Moonta the favourite at this stage.
GREAT EXPECTATIONS... Josh Hoyle and the CMS Crows fell just short of a premiership in 2019 but have reloaded for season 2021.
2 CMS Crows Perhaps only Father Time can stop the CMS Crows this year. The Crows have brought back their two forward-line stars from their early-2010s premiership teams, James Moss and Adam Jolly. Both are the “wrong” side of 30 now but should have some quality footy left in them. If Jolly is anything like his mum he might still be playing As in 20 years’ time. And even if Moss is 25 per cent worse than he was in his prime, that just means he will need all four quarters to kick 12 goals rather than doing that and then sitting out the final term. As long as those two hold up, the Crows are absolute top contenders. Besides, they have plenty of young talent as well, and possibly the best depth across all positions of any side this year. The Litster lads, Josh Hoyle, Murphy Short and several other young guns were dominating when the Crows made the grand final last season. Now they’re a couple of years older and I expect them to go to another level entirely.
3 Southern Eagles It feels rude placing the reigning premier in third spot, but I think the Eagles will be just as good as before — whilst the Crows have taken a step up and Moonta has taken a couple. The Eagles have lost spearhead Shane Mumford but I wouldn’t rule them out because of that, firstly because they have recruited several key position players, and secondly because Mumford didn’t end up playing forward in the ’19 grand final anyway. Ryan Weidenhofer is a good pick up, having played a handful of games for Sturt, and might accept being paid in bait and boat fuel. Most importantly, the Eagles have a handful of excellent young players coming through, some of whom were part of that ’19 flag and are now a couple of years older, ready for another tilt. The Southerners should still have the best depth of any side in the competition after also taking out the reserves flag last time out with a side featuring several lads who would walk straight into any other club’s best 21.
4 Ardrossan
CONTENDERS... Dylan Mansell will return from a torn ACL and lead one of the most starstudded midfields in Yorke Peninsula Football League history when he takes the field for Moonta this season.
34
Yorke Peninsula Country Times ■ YPFL & YPNA 2021 SEASON PREVIEW
It’s amazing to think about how well Ardrossan has recruited, and all of the (well earned) buzz, and then think about how despite all that I can only slot them in fourth. In fact, it’s looking like we will only have a four-team finals series this year so our grand final doesn’t clash with the AFL grand final (I’ve been trying to fix this but Gil won’t return my DMs). That means I have the Roos — with all their star power — just scraping into the finals. Let’s get the headliner out of the way first. Sam Jacobs is going to be an absolute force for the Roos. Don’t worry about how his year at GWS was a bit underwhelming by his lofty standards, think back to when the Crows brought him back through the SANFL in 2019. He was utterly dominant. And if his basketball form is anything to go by, Jacobs is still megafit and has lost none of his competitiveness. His midfield will include Angus Rowntree, who nearly won a Magarey and is somehow still not even 30, and Mail Medallist Josh Lawson who has barely lost a step as evidenced by his standout performance for Orroroo last year. This should allow Steven Wellington to move forward where he is almost impossible to match up on due to his speed and length.

2021 SEASON PREVIEW
in the YP Football League 7 CY Cougars The Cougars have plenty of promising signs under new coach Luke Trenorden, and have recruited heavily along with bringing back a lot of talent from 2019. The losses of Zac Bates and Jackson Bruce will hurt the group’s midfield depth, but Charlie Hay could be one of the recruits of the year. Hay captained South Australia to a win at under-16 level, selected as skipper over teammates including Boyd Woodcock, Connor Rozee and Izak Rankine. The Cougars also have solid depth on the flanks which could put them a step above the sides I’ve grouped them with here. Stalwarts like Alex Greensalde and Corey Graham will give the side options up forward. The Cougars had a bye in round 18, 2019, so no team has waited longer for round one of 2021.
8 Paskeville Last year’s season cancellation was cruel for many sides, but perhaps none more so than Pasky. On the plus side, it allowed playing coach Lachlan Wilson and star mid Abraham Helfand to well and truly recover from their ACL tears, giving the Magpies two big bodies in the guts. But on the other hand they lost a massive chance to compete for a top spot. Pasky would have had gun full forward and former Recruit winner Johan Wagner to complement centre-half forward Tom Phelps, as well as young guns Brock Thompson and Will Pearce (who played for Bute in the APFL). This year they will be without all of those lads at this stage. Pasky has reloaded with some quality recruits but it appears the Pies will lack key-position players which could make it tough to match it with the top sides. Pasky does have a couple of top players who are “maybes” at this stage so could exceed expectations if those lads commit.
9 Kadina The Bloods struggled a couple of years ago with just three wins and I’d argue the competition has improved since then. Has Kadina? Maybe in some areas, but from all reports the side will still be in a development phase, lacking big bodies and blooding plenty of youngsters. Still, the Bloods will have some very handy players to throw out there including mainstays Jayson Manners, Giles Ellis and Alex East. They have also recruited a couple of strong players, although they will miss Bryce Woolard who kept them in games off his own boot on occasion last season.
FINALS PUSH... Sam Taylor and Bute had a successful season in the Adelaide Plains Football League last year and will look to build further and push for a finals spot in the Yorke Peninsula league thanks to that added experience.
5 Bute The good news for the Roosters is I have them in the five. The bad news is that would mean they miss the finals this year. It’s easier to get a read on Bute since it participated in the Adelaide Plains league last season, an excellent call by all involved as evidenced by the A grade’s growth and the club’s strong junior numbers. Bute shocked the APFL in the minor round but had a collapse come finals time, so it should be extra hungry this year. YPFL followers have for years been saying Bute has one of the best young cores in the league. Now those lads are in their 20s and it’s time for them to lead the way and see how far they can take the Roosters this year.
6 Wallaroo The Bulldogs have brought back some quality players including a couple of the Bollmeyer brothers, who were very handy for them a few seasons back. They have also retained almost their entire team from 2019, which made the finals and put in a good effort against eventual grand finalists the CMS Crows. That makes Wallaroo the dark horse for this season if you ask me, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they finished a spot or two higher than my prediction. I just have more confidence in Bute having watched some great footy from those boys last year, and think the top four will be another step above the competition.
DARK HORSE... Wallaroo made the top five in 2019 and has recruited well, welcoming back Jack Bollmeyer who last played in 2018.

Girls, take to the field Rhiannon KOCH JOURNALIST
Yorke Peninsula is again well represented at the highest level of women’s footy. Currently, there are five former locals lining up in the AFLW — Chelsea Biddell, Hannah Button, Rachelle Martin and Jessica Sedunary for the Adelaide Crows, plus Tait Mackrill with the GWS Giants. The pathway to the top level is becoming clearer, with more locals working their way through the system. Port Broughton’s Mackrill started playing footy with the Broughton-Mundoora Eagles in the Northern Areas Football Association as a junior, while lining up for the club’s netball teams as well. “I’d play a game of netball and then go play football straight after,” she said. “ I gave up playing netball — I didn’t like the dress — but there were a couple of other girls who were playing football as well.” At 14, Mackrill was told she could no longer play football at her home club, but it didn’t stop her.
“We actually applied for an exemption with the Northern Areas Football Association and they rejected it, so we had to travel to Adelaide to play in the women’s competition,” she said. “The league decision was disappointing but I was playing in competitions at school.” Mackrill is a big believer in participating in local sport and said she misses the social aspect of a day at the football oval. “There is nothing like going to the footy back home,” she said. “People should get involved and play with their local clubs because of that social side and it also keeps you fit and healthy. “You learn so much playing sport as well — the leadership you learn is massive in whatever capacity you are playing.” Biddell, now in her second season with the Crows, had a later start to football world — first playing basketball and netball in the local competitions. “Playing local sport was a great way to make friends and have fun,” she said. “You don’t even realise you’re doing it, you’re just having a good time.”
TRAINING... Former Port Broughton player Tait Mackrill has helped pave the way for young female footballer players.

2021 SEASON PREVIEW
YP footy adds Sauce ROOS... Ardrossan playing coach Sam Jacobs with assistant coach Tom Van Schaik.
AFL star Sam Jacobs has returned to his hometown Ardrossan Kangaroos for season 2021. Since Jacobs announced his return to Ardrossan, where he played his junior footy before shifting to Woodville-West Torrens, Carlton, Adelaide and finally Greater Western Sydney, there has been more big news at the club. Jacobs will now assume a player/coach role for the Ardrossan A grade, and his arrival has helped the club recruit several high-profile players including fellow Ardrossan juniors turned high-level standouts Angus Rowntree and Sam Roads. Jacobs said he was excited to lead the Roos in what would hopefully be a successful season. “I’m excited about coming back and playing for Ardrossan,” he said. “This opportunity to return to community football and put something back into the club is pretty special.” Jacobs will be joined by assistant coach Tom Van Schaik. “It will be good to get Tom back involved with footy after his previous affiliation with (Central Yorke) Cougars,” he said. “Although I have plenty of coaching to offer, I’m lucky to have a supportive playing group to lean on. “We’ll be looking to find an on-field balance to make us competitive again.”
Player names in the YP Country Times Unfortunately, the traditional YPFL Footy and Netty Budget will not be published this year. The YP Country Times had never produced the footy Budget but, in its absence, will step up to provide one of its most important aspects — player names and numbers — starting from early this season. “As the YP Country Times also features tips, reports from previous matches, YPFL and YPNA news, and more, we hope our paper can help fill the void left behind by there no longer being a game-day Budget,” editor Nick Perry said. “Anyone who wants a hand identifying local players can pack their Country Times in the car and take it to the game. “For years the Budget has been produced by Pioneer Print at Yorketown, and they have done an excellent job. “The YP Country Times looked at the possibility of producing a full Budget but, after careful consideration, has decided it is more cost effective and achievable to instead bring Budget-style information into the weekly paper. “We will do our absolute best to have accurate player names and numbers each week, and ask that clubs let us know if we have anything wrong so it can be corrected immediately. “Thank you to Pioneer Print for producing a wonderful budget for many years. “We hope the Country Times can help fill the void and would love to see people referring to the paper around the grounds this year. “We encourage readers to also hang onto this Let’s Play guide and use it as a reference for club information, contact details, fixtures and more throughout the 2021 season. “Finally, we wish all clubs on the peninsula all the best for the season ahead, and encourage people to support local sport by attending games and encouraging juniors to participate.”
Jacobs encourages junior sport participation
Attention local football and netball clubs — scribes
Sam Jacobs said he would like to see increased participation in junior sport on Yorke Peninsula. “With junior numbers dropping so much, the scoreboard has become less important and it’s more just about participation,” he said. “I think more kids need to commit to a sport, as there’s nothing better than being part of a team and developing mateship. “I learned discipline and resilience during junior footy and it’s a great leveller for kids.” Jacobs said local parents shouldn’t underestimate the impact sports have on children. “My parents had the biggest impact on my career when they gave me the special opportunity of playing footy whilst growing up,” he said. “It’s everyone’s responsibility to keep local sport going because it’s the heartbeat of the YP. “I did the A grade scoreboard when I was a kid and things like that go a long way for footy clubs. “I couldn’t have spent my time on a Saturday any better, as it set me up with a healthy lifestyle.”
Please start thinking about your scribes for season 2021. The Yorke Peninsula Country Times kindly requests clubs provide reports for each game, due to editorial@ypct.com.au by 10am Mondays at the latest. How to write your report: Do... 3 Include interesting passages of play — great goals, amazing defensive efforts etc 3 Tell the readers how the game flowed — did one team start well and then the other make a comeback, for example? 3 Include player names to acknowledge noteworthy contributions 3 Feel free to provide your own best players, even if you saw it differently to those who were officially chosen Don’t... 6 Include quarter-by-quarter scores for the football (we already have those) 6 Go too far overboard criticising anyone — including the umpires! 6 Worry if you are not a brilliant writer — the important thing is that you tell us how the game went, so we can tell our readers, we can ‘tidy up’ your spelling and grammar if required

Sasha Glasgow continuing her career with West Coast Jess LIDDY JOURNALIST
Sasha Glasgow is entering her first season of Suncorp Super Netball as a member of the West Coast Fever. Glasgow signed with the Fever after four seasons with the Adelaide Thunderbirds, where she emerged as a gun shooter before a serious knee injury. She returned from injury to regain a spot in the Thunderbirds line-up but had not yet reasserted herself as a first-choice goalie, which she will now aim to do with the Fever. Hailing from Moonta Bay, Glasgow began her netball career at age 5 for the Kadina Netball Club, and said she had always loved the community aspect of netball. “Netball has given me a lot of my greatest friends, including some of my best friends who I started at a grassroots level with,” she said. “It also has allowed me to be challenged physically at the level I am at now and has taught me so many life lessons such as patience, time management and just a lot of
skills in self-confidence.” Glasgow said she thought kids, in particular girls, should take up netball to do something outside of school from a social aspect, but also to keep fit and healthy. “Netball is a fun way of getting in your exercise, you get to hang out with some of your friends and play a pretty awesome sport,” she said. “I think girls in particular think that liking a sport or being good at a sport at a young age makes them less of a stereotype of this ‘girly-girl’, but women in sport is becoming such a powerful movement and we are showing young girls they can do anything they want in their lives.” Glasgow said sport was an outlet away from school, bullies or anything happening in your life. “It is a little moment in time where you get to focus on you, your teammates and your coaches, and have fun,” she said. “I still love netball now just as much as I did when I was a kid growing up dreaming of being where I am now.”

Shoot for the stars with Sarah Klau Jess LIDDY JOURNALIST
Sarah Klau is one of the best defenders in netball, a pivotal player for the Australian Diamonds and the NSW Swifts. Klau, originally from Yorketown, started playing netball for the Southern Eagles when she was 8 years old, and has since soared to great heights, proving to young locals their dreams can come true. Klau played for state league team Matrics before being scooped up by the Adelaide Thunderbirds in 2015, as well as being selected to don the green and gold in the Australian 21-and-under side. Klau debuted for the Thunderbirds in 2016 before being selected for the national Emerging Talent Camp. She then signed with the NSW Swifts, where she remains a pivotal part of the team, including during its 2019 Suncorp Super Netball premiership.
AUSTRALIAN DIAMOND... Sarah Klau began her netball career with the Southern Eagles and is now known as one of the best defensive rebounders in Australian netball.
“I love the challenge of improving each week, the competitive edge, and most of all just learning and playing in a team sport with your best friends.” – Sarah Klau, elite netballer

Klau got her first taste of senior international competition training with the Diamonds before the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, and again before the 2018 International Test Series. As a result, she was rewarded with a spot on the extended squad. She was included in the Diamond World Cup team in July 2019 and represented Australia in the Constellation Cup in New Zealand. Klau has also represented Australia in Fast5 netball, blanketing key shooters during the Fast5 Netball World Series. “I have always just loved being active and playing sport wherever I could,” Klau said. “Growing up in the country, I felt like my life revolved around sport, it’s what keeps the community together. “I love the challenge of improving each week, the competitive edge, and most of all just learning and playing in a team sport with your best friends.” Klau said netball was the ultimate team sport. “It encourages kids to keep active and healthy, make friends, develop teamwork skills and confidence but most importantly have fun,” she said. “Do what you love, work hard and most of all just enjoy it.”
