2019 YORKE PENINSULA FOOTBALL & NETBALL PREVIEW

Kicking goals at the highest level

A handful of locals are making their mark on the AFL and AFLW competitions.

Sam Jacobs, of Ardrossan, has just started his 10th season at the top level of the game, leading the ruck for the Adelaide Crows. Jacobs spent four seasons with Carlton — debuting in his third year, in 2009 — before being traded to the Crows ahead of the 2011 season. Since then he has been a mainstay of the Crows’ line-up, dominating through the middle part of the decade and helping the team reach the 2017 grand final, a loss to Richmond. Jacobs was among Adelaide’s best players in the match. He has been one of the Crows’ top-10 best and fairest vote getters on several occasions including fourth-place finishes in 2015 and 2017. Jacobs will turn 31 on Wednesday, April 10, but is showing no signs of losing his mantle as the Crows’ number-one ruckman. Port Broughton lad George Hewett has also experienced the paid of losing an AFL grand final. The 23 year old has already played 71 games — of a possible 73 since making his debut — for the Sydney Swans. Hewett almost lived the dream of winning an AFL premiership in his first season, 2016, but the Swans went down to the Western Bulldogs. He has since forced his way into the potent Sydney midfield where he spent much of last season as a tagger, effectively standing some of the competition’s premier players. His efforts placed Hewett seventh in the club’s best and fairest count after a fourth-place finish the year before.

Minlaton girls Jessica Sedunary and Hannah Martin, from the Adelaide Crows’ AFLW team, with local fan Anais Glazbrook.

The young gun is primed for another consistent year as his side looks to feature deep into the finals. Hewett’s younger brother Cameron is on the Port Power list, as is recent draftee Boyd Woodcock, of Kadina. Both players will start the season in the SANFL and try to push for selection to make their AFL debuts. Yorke Peninsula is also well represented in the AFL Women’s competition. Hannah Martin and Jess Sedunary, both of Minlaton, have had successful seasons for the Adelaide Crows. The Crows have been among the form teams of the competition. Sedunary was part of the inaugural

ALFW premiership with Adelaide in 2017. Martin was drafted ahead of the 2019 season and has already established herself as a player to watch for the Crows in a pinch-hitting midfield role. Mundoora girl Tait Mackrill has also debuted in the AFLW competition this year, representing the GWS Giants. Mackrill had only just turned 18 when she moved interstate to chase her football dream. She played for the GWS reserves in 2018 before receiving a call up to the top grade earlier this year. The Giants missed out on the top two in AFLW’s conference B, failing to make the finals, but Mackrill will push for a bigger role with the team in 2020.

Good luck for the season After the game come and see Snook for a coldie! Good old-fashioned service – great pub!

Sam Jacobs will again lead the ruck for the Adelaide Crows this season.

How has your preseason been and what do you expect will be your strengths this season? We have lost a number of players from last season so we have been given an exemption to not have an A grade. This will allow our players to develop their skills, gain confidence and enjoy their netball again in a more even competition.

Riding the boundary

What will be some of your key areas of focus? Decision making, and playing as a team and having belief in each other’s abilities. Who are some up-and-coming players to watch? Jess Lee is now in her third year of seniors, and we are looking for her to play with confidence and consistency. Zoe Lodge always gives 100 percent and her determination will be an inspiration to those playing around her. Team to beat: CMS Crows Dark horse: CY Cougars What are the top three things you want the team to achieve this season? 1. Improvement from last season (win more than one game) 2. Team cohesiveness 3. Team confidence (Playing B grade will give the players this opportunity as it will be a more even competition). Predict the top three sides at the end of the minor round: CMS Crows, Moonta, CY Cougars.

After their best season in years, captain Scott Burnett and the Ardrossan Kangaroos hope to be involved at the pointy end of season 2019. What will be some of your key areas of focus? We’re looking to build on last year. Making the finals was a good step for us but we are looking to go one step further. We need to play at our maximum to compete with the top three sides. Who are some young players to watch? Jack Wheare is currently at PAC but we hope he will spend a bit of time with us this season. How do your new recruits fit in with your side, and how do they address areas you wanted to improve? Last year we probably lacked a bit of firepower outside of Kane Blades, we only had one main target going forward. It will allow Steven Wellington to play more in the midfield. Who will be the team to beat, and who will be the dark horse? Moonta will be tough to beat, as will the

How has your preseason been and based on that what do you expect will be your strengths this season? We have started the season well with some solid trainings and internal trials; however, the crossover of country sport always makes planning difficult. Fitness has been a solid focus and we hope to continue pushing this throughout the season.

with coach Lyndon Elsworthy

What will be some of your key areas of focus? We will be focussing on team development and strengthening individual skills within new roles on the court. Who are some up-and-coming players to watch? This year we are excited to bring Tyra Wigzell into the attacking end, she is a great all-round netballer who will provide us with some positive momentum. Team to beat: CMS Crows Dark horse: Bute What are the top three things you want the team to achieve this season? 1. Develop skills and be confident 2. Improve movement on the ball 3. Snapshot Coaches for 2019 Bute standout Josh Smithson returns with several other young guns for what should be a promising season at Bute. What do you expect will be your strengths this season? We have a young list so we expect to be a quick running side. What will be some of your key areas of focus? A lot of our focus has been on quick ball movement and to take the game on. Who are some young players to watch? Luke McCauley and Joe Simpson return to the club after playing with the Eagles in Adelaide. Jack Norman in his second year at the club is looking good on the track and we expect a lot from him this season. How do your new recruits fit in with your side, and how do they address areas you wanted to improve? Our focus was to add depth to our list. We have added a number of new lads to our playing ranks and hopefully we will be stronger in both grades.

Who will be the team to beat, and who will be the dark horse? Moonta will be tough to beat and Ardrossan is my dark horse as I hear the Roos have added some quality players. What are the top three things you want the team to achieve this season? Play consistent football, improve as a club from last year, and be respected by all our opposition. What’s happening around the club? • Social events at the club after every home game • Rooster Ball at the town hall, midyear • 1969 reunion for all grades in that year, Sunday, June 16 • Possible black-tie event for club best and fairest count

What do you expect will be your strengths this season? We are young side with plenty of pace, so we hope to use that to our advantage when moving the ball forward and applying defensive pressure. What will be some of your key areas of focus? We have put a big focus on improving our foot and hand skills which will complement our fast-paced game style. Who are some young players to watch? We have several young guns coming up into senior footy this season we will put plenty of time into. Max Litster has certainly impressed throughout preseason and will start in A grade round one. Bodi Warwick is another who really impressed late last season and one to watch as he finds his feet in A grade. How do your new recruits fit in with your side, and how do they address areas you wanted to improve? We have some fresh faces and returning locals who have all slotted in well with our current playing group which is great to see. We wanted to achieve a more balanced side across all lines and I think we have achieved that. Who will be the team to beat this year, and who will be the dark horse? You can’t go past Moonta after finishing last season in red-hot form, taking out the premiership, and they seem to have added some additional talent to their list. Ardrossan have continued improving in the past couple of season so I’m interested Coaches for 2019 to see how they stack up this A grade – Brett Baillie season — could be a dark B grade – Damien Bennett horse. Senior Colts – Michael McSkimming What are the top three Junior Colts – Blake MacGowan things you want the team Minis – Dean McIntosh to achieve this season? We Under 10s – Edward Mahar want to be more consistent Auskick – Rick Cook than last season and play Committee finals. Our preseason has been strong, and our squad President – Bronte Blyth is well balanced so we are Secretary – to be announced happy with where we sit. Treasurer – Andrew “Flash” Gordon Continued hard work on the Junior president – Anthony Bennett track throughout the season Merchandise manager – Troy Goldsworthy will be important to ensure Sponsorship – Carmel Short we are still around at the League delegate – Warren Hickman pointy end of the year.

How has your preseason been and based on that what do you expect will be your strengths this season? We have had a great preseason which has been well attended. We have numerous coaches taking different sessions which the players have thoroughly enjoyed. Our strength will continue to be a culture we want to develop across the club. What will be some of your key areas of focus? Key areas of focus will be developing new relationships and structures across the court. Who are some up-and-coming to watch? Players to watch this season are Isabella Varricchio and Sophie Longbottom who join our senior ranks from E grade. Both have pushed hard during the preseason fitness sessions and I look forward to seeing them strengthen in 2019. Tyla Cook will get a deserved opportunity in the A grade

side this year. She has been able to learn from some fantastic mid-courters during the past two years and I can’t wait to see where it takes her game this year. I’m also looking to Baillie Trenwith to push for selection into the A/B squad. She has worked hard over summer and this has shown in our training tryouts. Georgina Farrow returns to CMS from a knee injury and I expect big things from her this season. Team to beat: Moonta. Dark horse: Southern Eagles. What do you expect will be your strengths this season? Versatility and adaptability. Our playing list consists of players who have the ability and mindset to play in a number of positions on the ground. Player attitudes are positive and they have shown an enthusiasm to fulfil a role that best suits the team. Experienced players such as Corey Graham, Jon Dutsche, Alex Greenslade, Bill Edwards and Will Baker have set a wonderful standard at trainings on the peninsula, while Ciaran Hollingworth-Hughes, Jackson Bruce and Henry Hollams continue to impress with their commitment to trainings Adelaide.

What will be some of your key areas of focus? A focus during the preseason is fitness and fundamental football skills. The key area of focus during games will be attitude and a desire to be your best.

with A grade coach Janine Burrows

How has your preseason been and based on that what do you expect will be your strengths this season? We have had a slow start to preseason with the usual summer sport clashes resulting in low numbers at trainings. We have a renewed positivity at trainings, focussing on getting to know new players, gaining fitness and enjoying playing netball. Cougars’ strengths this season will be diversity of playing positions and the ability to mix it up to get the results we want. What will be some of your key areas of focus? We are focussing on our fitness and the ability of our senior teams to play a full four quarters of netball, and trying to avoid the third quarter-itis which has us switch off and get overrun. Who are some up-and-coming players to watch? We are hoping to extend some of our older juniors by getting them involved in senior trainings and senior games. Hopefully Latoya Humes will continue to play in E grade whilst also pushing for time in the Bs. Shayla McKay is returning to netball after focussing on soccer and will enjoy her first season in the seniors. Team to beat: Moonta Dark horse: Kadina

Who are some young players to watch? We have a core group of young players with talent. Players such as Ed Linke, Henry Hollams, Jackson Bruce, Harrison Burns, Jacob Davies, Frankie Wanganeen and Sam Williams have a great opportunity to showcase their talent this year. Consistency of performance and an improved work rate is the very least that we expect from these players. How do your new recruits fit in with your side, and how do they address areas you wanted to improve? Our recruiting committee has done a great job attracting talented footballers with good character to our club. The signing of Luke Trenorden is a huge bonus given his outstanding football talent and leadership qualities. Sam Ferguson brings strength and direction to our team along with the experience and sharpness of Daniel Longman. The hard-running Josh Thomas returns to the club with great excitement and Ryan Vivian promises to bring balance to our forward line. Who will be the team to beat, and who will be the dark horse? It seems logical to predict Moonta is the team to beat given its current standing as premier from 2018. The Demons will be hard to beat but having coached and watched the Southern Eagles for the past number of years I believe they are the team to beat in 2019. Their younger local players have developed into good footballers and the team has strong leaders in Jack and Matt Barlow. I never underestimate any team in this

2019 YORKE PENINSULA FOOTBALL & NETBALL PREVIEW

Welcome our new footy tipster for 2019... “Centimetre Perfect” Moonta again the team to beat

Only a few things in life are certain — death, taxes, your uncle yelling “KICK IT LOOOOONG” six times a quarter. Predicting the winners for every Yorke Peninsula Football League game this year is going to require a lot more guesswork but I’m giving it a crack anyway. Yep, the old “Half-back Flanker” has gone into retirement and I am your new guide to all things local footy. There is a bit happening this year. The Eagles are celebrating a 10-year flag reunion and, as is typical, their Crow cousins are going one better by celebrating the 20-year anniversary of that day they literally won every premiership. Speaking of cousins, Pasky and Bute will play a match under lights — or possibly just under the stars if Pasky’s new light towers don’t rock up. Perhaps everyone could wear candles on their heads in a nod to their Cornish heritage? Speaking of which, the big Saturday of the Kernewek Lowender is on in Kadina on May 18. That should ensure a huge crowd to the festival and the footy match at... let’s see... where does Kadina play that day? Warooka! Oh well, never mind. At least Wallaroo and Moonta will be around the place that weekend. They have already shared Dean Cutting and Shane Jordan, why not share a few bottles of Swanky? I’m more interested in watching the Valley Cup as Ardrossan might finally have a better side than the CY Cougars this year — keyword might. With all that and much more, it’s shaping up

to be a ripper season. Let’s get into the tips for round one. CY Cougars v Bute The Cougars finished a distant second last year, which says a lot about the dominance of Moonta and a bit about the CY boys’ injury list. This year the Cougars will trot out a new-look side with the Kangur boys having hopped north and several other players missing. Finals are not out of the question but at this stage it is difficult seeing the Cougars reaching the same heights as in the past couple of years. Bute will be hoping this year goes differently to the past couple but for more positive reasons. The Roosters have a lot of talented youngsters and they are not afraid to crack in. Expect them to be a force to be reckoned with soon, but perhaps not this year. This game will offer us a good glimpse into where both sides are at — have the Cougars dropped off, and have the Roosters improved like we expect? At the final siren... CY Cougars by two goals. Southern Eagles v Wallaroo It’s a rough start to the season for Wallaroo, making the trip all the way to Yorketown only to face what I expect to be one of the premier sides in the competition. The Eagles have a group of top-level local talent and they’ve kept their standout key-position players. They will miss the work of Gerard Dutton and Sean Mahar through the middle of the ground but recruit Teejay Halkias has SANFL experience and should fill the void well. The Doggies will hope for a full season from Dean Cutting after he was injured much of last year, to team with the ageless Shane Jordan for a potent combination. I’m not sure they will have enough depth outside of those top-tier players to contend but they will certainly be competitive most weeks. At the final siren... Eagles by five goals.

CMS Crows v Moonta The Demons are again the team to beat this year and will be looking to go back to back. The CMS Crows took a slight step back after reaching the grand final 2017 (at Moonta’s expense) but from all reports seem rejuvenated this season. The Crows’ signing of Michael Wundke turned out to be a one-year rental but they have welcomed some very good players back home and will be full of dash. Moonta has lost Josh Ramsey and a couple of other premiership players but has replenished its stocks without many worries. Toby Haseldine returns to provide strength and versatility, as if the Dees need more of that. I expect Moonta to have an advantage through the midfield in this contest although it will be interesting to see who its main target up forward is now with Ramsey gone. At the final siren... Moonta by four goals. Kadina v Ardrossan The Bloods looked to be in all sorts a few months back but the recruiters worked overtime and the team seems to have landed on its feet. Ardrossan has brought in a couple of key forwards who should team with reigning leading goal-kicker Kane Blades to form a potent attack. Perhaps more importantly, it will mean Steven Wellington can spend more time in the guts with his partner in clearances Scott Burnett. Kadina will have some serious adjustments to make being without Jono Lee and Zak Edwards for the first time in a decade or so, but will put plenty of skill on the park and can start to work it all out. I’m high on the Roos this year, as long as their team defence stands up. The big oval might test them for round one, but I’m giving them the edge anyway. At the final siren... Ardrossan by a goal.

The CY Cougars and Bute — including Reuben Parker, Alex Greenslade and Nathan Hewett — will open the 2019 season this Saturday.

2019 YORKE PENINSULA FOOTBALL & NETBALL PREVIEW

Welcome our new netty tipster for 2019... “Straight Shooter” Melissa McSkimming and the CMS Crows will again be difficult to beat in 2019.

Teams prepare for round one

In the blink of an eye netball is back and it feels like it never left! Unfortunately, “Aunty Flo” has decided to sit on the bench this season so I will do my best to be your netball know-it-all. Thank you for bringing your wealth of netball and local knowledge, tips and tricks to the 2018 reports “Flo”, you’ve left big shoes to fill. I’m eager to get this season underway and see how the teams play, and I’m sure you’re all just as eager to see what I have to say about each one. I intend to live up to my name — but in saying that, don’t shoot the messenger. It’s hard to believe we’re starting the season in March and even more difficult to make predictions for round one. Ardrossan, unfortunately, won’t have an A grade this year and has been given an exemption. I hope this rebuilding year helps the Roos and allows current players to gain confidence and a newfound love of the game. Paskeville has the first bye and might need to use this time to scope out the competition after losing five key players. However, under the leadership of Fiona Bussenschutt and Amanda Carmichael I don’t think they would be sweating too much. Kadina has lost young guns Teesha Angus and Kate Schild but has appointed four new recruits. Accurate goalie Isabelle Glasgow returns to the club and should work well alongside Prue Hicks

who is back from injury. We have an exciting season ahead and I look forward to it getting underway this Saturday. Good luck to all teams in 2019! CY Cougars v Bute This should be a close encounter with Cougars finishing the 2018 season just above Bute on the ladder. Cougars have lost the likes of Ellie Langford, Bella Koennecke and Alex Hillebrand but coach Janine Burrows will look forward to using her new recruits. Tayla Barrand comes across from Minlaton and will provide the Cougars with a strong centre court. Laura Cassidy, also a handy centre court player, has made the move from Adelaide, while local gun Jo Davey returns which is a big win for them in the goal circle. I’ve been hearing good things about Bute. The Roosters had record numbers out to their sign-ups, and their fitness is said to be second to none. With the likes of Tyra Wigzell, Danielle Richardson and Breanna Taylor I think Bute will surprise us all this year. This will be a tight contest but Bute will come out on top. At the final whistle... Bute by five goals. Southern Eagles v Wallaroo Wallaroo makes its comeback to the A grade competition against a tough side and it will be an interesting game to scope out. Georgia Schulze, Steph Ormsby and Shaye Marshall all return to the court but let’s see how they fare against a class-act opponent. Ella Shaw is back from Adelaide as Wallaroo’s leading recruit and the Bulldogs will hope she gives them that extra something they need. Southern Eagles

finished in the top four last year and I’m confident they will do it again, with the intent of making it even further this year. Lauren Smith will lead the Eagles and she looks to have some young talent up her sleeve. Gemma Rudduck and Indilee Pedler are among those younger players, and if the senior players nurture these girls and take them under their wings they’ll be a force to be reckoned with. Eagles will lap up the first game on their home courts with ease. At the final whistle... Eagles by 15 goals. CMS Crows v Moonta I’m tipping this clash to be the match of the round. The reigning premiers take on Moonta, which got pipped by Paskeville in the semifinal last year. I’m sure A grade coach Michelle Hatcher will want to prove the Dees can make it all the way this season. Moonta has lost a few valuable players but is eager to showcase its young talent which includes Claudia Hatcher and Libby Adams. Under the guidance of veterans Adele Keleher, Alicia Cross and Tamara Lodge I think Moonta will dominate this season with one goal in sight, the flag. Amanda Pitt runs a well-oiled machine and this year will be no different — the Crows will want to come out and prove they can make it two in a row. Despite losing Tasmyn Biddell and Teagan Young, the Crows always seem to bounce back and have secured some fine recruits. These two teams will be the ones to watch this season and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a Crows v Moonta grand final. I definitely think Moonta has something to prove in this first round. At the final whistle... Moonta by two goals.

What do you expect will be your strengths this season? Our recruiters have done a great job again. Having lost some key players, we will look to strengthen our midfield with outside players and some of our great young locals. Our strengths have always been our attack on the ball and player so I expect this season to be no different.

Heather Miller

What will be some of your key areas of focus? We have worked on the fundamentals of the game during preseason so we have a solid foundation to build from during the season. Preseason has been solid, with good numbers, and our fitness has improved from previous seasons.

How has your preseason been and based on that what do you expect will be your strengths this season? Preseason has been well attended and players are keen to participate.

What will be some of your key areas of focus? Commitment to playing as a team and supporting teammates. Strong defence across the whole court. We want our players to enjoy playing the game of netball to the best of their ability. Who are some up-and-coming players to watch? Isabelle Glasgow has returned to KNC and we look forward to seeing what she has to bring back to us. Prue Hicks is also returning from injury.

Who are some young players to watch? We have a good number of young footballers coming through the ranks. As with any younger players we will be trying to gradually expose them to the rigours of senior football, and Coaches for 2019 hoping they find consistency in A grade – Daniel Flowers their efforts going forward. B grade – Stuart Roennfeldt How do your new recruits fit in Senior Colts – Gregg Clarke with your side, and how do Junior Colts – Will Schultz they address areas you wanted Minis – Rob Harris to improve? Under 10s – Jack Day Our new players fit in well. As Auskick – Mark Toole I’ve said the recruiting Captains committee have been great and we have been lucky to get the A grade – Alex East, Jason Manners, players we needed. Our midfield vice-captain Giles Ellis has been strengthened along B grade – B grade, David Poole, with our ruck and forward vice-captains Jake Boothey, positions, but we also have Duncan Curnow, Michael Plumb flexibility throughout.

Who will be the team to beat, and who will be the dark horse? Moonta will be the benchmark again I think, they have great depth and are always around the mark. From all reports Ardrossan has recruited well and should improve on last season. What are the top three things you want to achieve this season? Being a young team, we will be looking for consistency across the board. Obviously winning enough games to play finals is something we will be looking to achieve. For these things to happen we need to have a high level of accountability amongst the group.

Michelle Hatcher How has your preseason been and based on that what do you expect will be your strengths this season? Our preseason has brought a presence of youth in the centre court and a strength of experienced players at either end which will be exciting to witness for our first game.

Riding the boundary

What do you expect will be your strengths this season? We have had a really solid preseason with a big emphasis on developing our local talent. We believe going forward for the season this is the area that will benefit us the most. What will be some of your key areas of focus? The key areas we will be focussing on this year both at trainings and during games will be a team-first mentality and the development of our local talent. Who are some young players to watch? Brayden Aldridge, Jackson Zwar, Luke Chapman, Dylan Slack and Harry Williams have all had massive preseasons and will be rewarded with the results throughout the season. We are just looking for them to really have a crack and fit in with our team-first mentality the rest will take care of itself.

with coach Luke Pridham

What will be some of your key areas of focus? Our focus at trainings is to practise all skills of the game to capitalise on court structure, fitness and no injuries.

How do your new recruits fit in with your side, and how do they address areas you wanted to improve? Our recruits have fitted in really well, they have not missed a session and have gotten onboard with what we stand for. They will improve us because like all of our squad they are versatile and can play anywhere.

Who are some up-and-coming players to watch? Lucy Prior, Claudia Hatcher, Libby Adams and Lauren Pratt in the A grade are the young talents named in our elite squad. I am looking for consistency and proving they are a contender for all the other teams playing against them.

Who will be the team to beat, and who will be the dark horse? The team to beat will be the Southern Eagles — rumour has it they have recruited really well down there and they weren’t far away last year. Dark horse will be Ardrossan, they are extremely well led by their coach and have some absolute gun midfielders.

Team to beat: CMS Crows Dark horses: CY Cougars and Southern Eagles What are the top three things you want the team to achieve this season? 1. Win the flag at the end 2. The girls to enjoy their netball 3. Enjoy being on court together

What are the top three things you want the team to achieve this season? This season we want the young local talent to really grow and develop in the team setup and we believe if this happens and we continue to play selfless accountable football the results will take care of themselves.

What do you expect will be your strengths this season? Our depth is a lot better than last year so that will be important for us this season. What will be some of your key areas of focus? We have been focussing on our rotations. We want to be more organised and really utilise the bench to tap into our depth.

Who are some young players to watch? Brock Thomson and Will Pearce have both impressed during preseason. Both will play for Woodville-West Torrens but we hope to have them for a lot of games as well.

What are the top three things you want the team to achieve this season? We will aim to finish the minor round in the top three to give us as good a chance of winning a flag as possible.

How do your new recruits fit in with your side, and how do they address areas you wanted to improve? The best thing for us is that all our recruits have come because they have good mates at the club. That’s important because we know they will fit in well and support the club.

What’s happening around the club? • A night match against Bute, followed by a ladies’ night, April 27

Who will be the team to beat, and who will be the dark horse? Moonta has been really strong for a long time and has a good bunch of locals. As for the dark horse I’d say the Eagles but I wouldn’t consider them a dark horse, they will be right up there. I’ll say Ardrossan with the way they have been improving.

A bit of a mix up with some new coaches joining the team this year, which will bring new ideas and philosophies to the club which is exciting. What will be some of your key areas of focus both at trainings and during games? Commitment, consistency and good clean netball, leading to results. Who are some up-and-coming players to watch? Portia Joyce-Tubb and Alex Wilson join the squad and some young up-and-coming players are Amy Ward and Nicole Burgan. We are hoping they settle in well, adding some youth and depth to our squad. What will be some of your key areas of focus? We will have to wait and see.

Lauren Smith

Who are some young players to watch? We have several under 20s who have had a lot of success in junior football and we hope they will take their success to the next level.

How has your preseason been and based on that what do you expect will be your strengths this season? This year we have seen a lot of young players enter their senior netball years and their passion and drive at trainings has been impressive. Our preseason has been based on improving anaerobic endurance, footwork and building team relationships. I expect our strengths will be in our younger players’ speed and enthusiasm and as well as our team dynamic.

How do your new recruits fit in with your side, and how do they address areas you wanted to improve? They have fitted in really well. We hope they bring an exciting brand of football to our club. Who will be the team to beat, and who will be the dark horse? Moonta will be the team to beat. For the dark horse, maybe Ardrossan. What are the top three things you want the team to achieve this season? Win enough games to qualify for the finals, and to keep improving as the year goes on.

What will be some of your key areas of focus both at trainings and during games? This season I am placing an emphasis on defensive skills and pressure across the court. We will also be focussing on back-tobasics footwork and agility skills to ensure our movement and transition down the court is seamless.

What’s happening around the club? A 10-year premiership reunion.

Snapshot

Who are some up-and-coming players to watch? Gemma Rudduck and Indilee Pedler are young talents to keep your eye on this season. I will be looking at how they grow and respond to the pressure against tougher, more experienced opponents.

Our strengths this season will be our new younger players bringing their speed and agility to our game, whilst being balanced by the returning senior players to provide direction and focus on court.

with coach Dean Cutting What do you expect will be your strengths this season? The players have worked extremely hard during the preseason on their conditioning to ensure our running capacity is of high standard. As coach, I would expect to build on our team culture from last season as we challenge individuals to step up with important leadership roles.

What will be some of your key areas of focus? Our preseason trainings have involved focussing on the basics of our game and ensuring we work as a team. We have focussed on footwork, attacking, and defensive skills, in preparation for some of the tough competition we will face throughout the season.

What will be some of your key areas of focus? Each week our leadership group works heavily on our team values on and off the field. This ensures all individuals are clear on the expectations from week to week at trainings and game day. Who are some young players to watch? Chase Martin has worked so hard during the offseason, he offers versatility so I’d expect to see him in the ruck, roaming our forward line or even matching up in defence. Bailey Hann has matured in his football over the summer and I expect to see a stronger, more resilient, controlled and damaging all-round player this season. Angus Johns is one of the most coachable players in our team. Since last season he has understood his weaknesses and worked hard to improve. Angus is much more dynamic in his football and I expect him to work relentlessly in our midfield/forward line. Alex Cavenett is pushing for A grade selection after a very solid preseason. How do your new recruits fit in with your side, and how do they address areas you wanted to improve? Our new recruits this year fit the culture of our team. I believe this is more important than placing unnecessary weighted pressure on individuals. All players will play in different roles throughout the season and I have no doubt they will all adapt.

Courtside

Who are some up-and-coming players to watch? We have seen the return of Georgia Hann, Steph Ormsby, and Shaye Marshall to the A grade side this year. These girls provide immense talent in our team that can’t be underestimated. We have also recruited Prue Redden, Emma Taylor and Ella Shaw. Prue is already showing signs of great speed and agility and looks like she will provide great drive and defence through our midcourt game. Rachelle Larwood had a great defensive season for the club last year and is ready to accept the challenge, having been selected in the As.

Wallaroo player/ coach Dean Cutting is excited about some of the young talent ready to take the next step this season.

Team to beat: CMS Crows Dark horse: Wallaroo What are the top three things you want the team to achieve this season? 1. Work as a team unit 2. Senior girls to encourage the newer, younger players 3. Improve on previous years and team commitment What are the top three things you want the team to achieve this season? As a football team our goal has been and always will be to create more prosperity for our juniors, supporters and sponsors of our club for years to come. What’s happening around the club? • Life membership presentation, May 4 • Sponsorship Day, June 29 • Bulldog Ball, July 6

Who will be the team to beat, and who will be the dark horse? It’s great the competition is even, but I would expect movement from Southern Eagles, Ardrossan and Bute as the dark horses. Moonta would still no doubt be the benchmark.
