FRI 14 – SAT 29 SEP A stunning new production, set in Britain's Olympic Year, exposing the beating heart of a nation, still broken and still divided across class lines. A long distance race in real time. We follow one runner, alone with his thoughts, becoming part of his journey as his steady running rhythm transports him over a harsh, frost bitten earth. Colin Smith is defiant. He is a young rebel inhabiting the no man's land of detention centres and young offenders institutes. Why, for whom and for what is he running? Adapted by BAFTA winning and Olivier Award nominated playwright Roy Williams (Sucker Punch, Fallout, Sing Yer Heart Out For The Lads), this gritty adaptation of Alan Sillitoe's classic text hits the ground running; unlocking the biting realism of the original book while placing the drama firmly in a contemporary frame Directed by Marcus Romer Designed by Lydia Denno Lighting Designed by Mark Beasley AV Design by KMA Soundscape by Sandy Nuttgens

FRI 5 – SAT 27 OCT A extraordinary new play based on the true story of a maverick plastic surgeon and his guinea pig patients. At the outset of World War II cosmetic surgeon Archibald McIndoe - whose expertise in fashioning the noses of starlets brings him fame but not fulfillment - must abandon plans for retirement to pioneer the most challenging procedures in surgical history, including the complete reconstruction of the human face. His new group of patients: the savagely burned fighter pilots and aircrew who helped to thwart the German invasion of Britain. But McIndoe soon discovers that all his efforts in the operating theatre are futile unless he can also save the shattered man behind the face. ‘For what good is a face without a man - a whole man?’ This then becomes his mission - and his own salvation. Emotions run the gamut from poignant to hilarious while challenging our attitudes towards beauty and its relevance to success. ESCAPING ALICE

Written by David Ireland Directed by Katie Posner Designed by Olivia Morton

Written by Matthew Pegg Directed by Juliet Forster Designed by Olivia Morton

Having met online, two strangers arrange an unusual first encounter in East Belfast. Alan is an affluent poet and Janet loves Big Brother. Culturally opposite, they've nothing in common except their desire for love and fear of intimacy. So how will they get through the night?

Simon loves Alice. Perhaps a little too much. But is their relationship really all that it seems? Who's keeping secrets? Why has he joined a dating agency? How come they never go out anymore? And why can he never remember the colour of her eyes?

David Ireland is writer in residence at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast and is fast becoming one of the UK’s most exciting emerging playwrights. Matthew Pegg is a writer based in the East Midlands. He has had work produced by regional theatres such as Leicester Haymarket and the Belgrade in Coventry and by touring companies such as Cornelius and Jones.

In 1977 the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company celebrated the Queen’s Silver Jubilee with a special production of Iolanthe. York Opera has chosen to follow suit for its Diamond Jubilee Year production. With a second act set in the heart of the British establishment – the Palace of Westminster-and featuring a men’s chorus of Peers of the Realm, the object of Gilbert’s satire in 1882 is very clear and still very topical today. Since the then Head of State, Queen Victoria, was the only female in the hierarchy of the time, it is fitting that we see their idiosyncrasies through the eyes of the ladies’ chorus of Fairies and of their Queen. Running alongside the political storyline is that of the

DOMBEY AND SON

OTHELLO

FRI 19 – SAT 20 OCT

TUE 23 – SAT 27 OCT

Written by Charles Dickens adapted by Jude Emmet

Written by William Shakespeare

For Dombey, money and the power it brings are the only gods worth worshipping. But can money really buy him everything he dreams of? What of love, or life itself? This is a tale of pride and passion, generosity and greed, of human foibles and the society which breeds them. A tale told with Dickens’ characteristic humour, indignation and pathos. In this sparkling new adaptation Red Dog brings a rogues’ gallery of unforgettable characters vividly and imaginatively to life, to delight, outrage and entertain. “a superb production.” Venue Magazine (The House of Bernarda Alba)

Proud war hero Othello secretively weds the beautiful daughter of a powerful merchant and unleashes a storm of prejudice and intrigue. As he begins to doubt those closest to him, he turns increasingly to his trusted aide, Iago, for advice, with violent and tragic consequences.

A fast-paced production that will seek to wrap you in its thrillingly claustrophobic embrace and never let go. Trust no one. “What you know . . . you know.” Directed by Mark France Designed by Simon Jarvis Music by Kingsley Ash

This bold re-telling is full of hard edges and simmering tensions with moments of profound beauty and tenderness. Soaring romantic love and visceral hatred sit side by side in a play that takes you from the searing heat of the Mediterranean sunlight to the darkest recesses of the mind.

STICK GRANNY ON THE ROOF-RACK

Written by Sue Shields

Prisoner 24601, Jean Valjean is released from prison and so begins his bitter struggle to find redemption for the sins of his past and become a force for good. Always at his heels is his nemesis, the ruthless, puritanical policeman Javert, who has made it his life’s work to recapture Valjean and put him back in prison.

Matty is off to college in an hour – and he’s left it to Mum to pack his suitcase. She won't miss the slamming doors, the queue for the bathroom and the phone bills. But Matty is no ordinary teenager. Will his Mum cope without him? Will he cope with the challenges that lie ahead? This honest and uplifting play was inspired by the extraordinary life story of a boy with Down’s syndrome, and his mother’s humorous and idiosyncratic perspective on bringing him up.

Set in a time when riot and revolution were in the air, and those with all the power and money were blinkered to the coming storm, this epic story of love, injustice and atonement is as relevant now as it ever was.

In this unique production the gifted and charismatic Nathan Bessell plays the central character Matty, drawing on his own life experiences. Times: 2.30pm & 7.45pm Performance Location: Studio Tickets: £12, £8 students & u25s, £10 concessions Members 15% off 2 tickets

ADULT THEATRE WORKSHOP PERFORMANCE TERM AUTUMN/ WINTER 2012

BRINGING THE THEATRE ROYAL TO LIFE! During this ten week term we’ll largely be exploring the history and characters that have shaped the life of the Theatre Royal. Using devising, character creation and promenade performance we’ll present tales both factual and fictional in a variety of locations and styles in both the De Grey House and the building itself. This is a terrific opportunity to explore drama in exciting settings and be part of a truly unique production. Adult Acting aims to develop confidence and drama techniques and is led by professional actor, Michael Lambourne. £80 for the 10 week term 17 Sep - 19 Nov (consecutive Mondays) 18+ All students should be available for each Monday of the entire term, especially the final two sessions. Please note some areas used in this promenade performance will not be accessible to those with mobility problems.
