More than just a theatre festival this is a two week celebration of live performance by both the country’s brightest new talent and established groups, including stunning classic theatre like Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa and BeltUp Theatre’s adaptation of The Beggar’s Opera as well as Dance (Verve 2011), and Comedy (Fitzrovia Radio Hour, Comedy Night!). TakeOver is committed to introducing some of the best new talent in all aspects of performance. This festival is proud to present great local community projects and original work like 4:48 Psychosis a TakeOver production featuring some of the brightest new talent. We are privileged to present some of the best work from recent Edinburgh Festivals such as Fringe First winning companies Rash Dash and Little Bulb with their shows Another Someone and Operation Greenfield. This is a rare chance to see some of the most enchanting unique theatre out there, so be adventurous and try something new! A huge thanks to CPP who have kindly supported and sponsored our festival, it’s great to have them on board to help create what promises to be a fantastic festival for everyone! See you there!
This March you can expect to experience a different York Theatre Royal as the Takeover festival expands beyond our studio and main house with the front of house becoming a hub of activity for visitors and performers alike! Enjoy your post-show drinks with some of the best local bands performing after many of our shows alongside secret pre-show performances, there is always going to be something on during TakeOver. As always TakeOver continues to host an impressive array of workshops for all ages and interests, ranging from a master class in script writing to a selection of weekend events for families including our Nature Day with performance workshops, interactive performance poetry, arts and crafts and much more this spring! WORKSHOPS CHOREOGRAPHY FOR CONTEMPORARY THEATRE
RHYTHM OF LIFE
Unified movement sequences can look spectacular in theatre, our bodies have the ability to communicate in a way words often struggle to. However, it can be difficult to know where to start. In this session participants will develop simple choreographic techniques which can quickly create high impact and original movement sequences. Led by an experienced professional dance and drama practitioner, this session will be highly active so be sure to wear loose clothing and bring water. 13+ Thu 17 Mar, 6pm-8pm. Ballroom £4

CHARACTER FIRST, SCRIPT LATER During this workshop we will look at building a character from scratch and explore how characterisation can be used to devise plays or performances.
MASTER CLASS IN WRITING FOR PERFORMANCE Award winning playwright Danusia Iwaszko will take a special one off Master class on Writing for Performance. Summer 1936. A cottage in the remote Irish village of Ballybeg where the Mundy sisters live a simple life in the shadow of the hills of Donegal. Their recently returned brother Jack is played by Daragh O’Malley (Withnail and I, Sgt Harper in Sharpe).Brian Friel’s gentle and touching play paints a vivid and life affirming portrait of five brave women.
Meet Tim: a 14 year-old with an overactive imagination. And meet Tim: a 24 year-old with no future ambitions. Watch them grow up in this offbeat tale that weaves through past and present with hilarious and touching consequences.

HOW THE KOALA LEARNT TO HUG BY THE PEOPLES THEATRE COMPANY THU 17 MAR Everybody knows that Koalas are just about the cutest critters alive but the heart of Yorkshire is a long way from their tropical Australian home so for residents of Aylesbury getting to see one can be a bit tricky. However, thanks to TakeOver’s presentation of a brand new show called How The Koala Learnt To Hug the joy of koalas can come to everyone! Written especially for parents to enjoy with their children, this is a charming, tale about the magic of family and, of course, the importance of a nice warm hug!
