We have taken our inspiration for this season from the great county of Yorkshire: its people, its landscapes and its stories. Across the year we hope to show as many different faces of the county as we can and we invite you to delve into the Yorkshire origins of the work. It will show itself in the settings, like the great battle at Towton at the heart of our partnership with Shakespeare’s Globe to stage the Wars of the Roses or the night of bombings in York in 1942 captured in the Youth Theatre production of Where Shadows Go at Night. It is inspired by our literary giants: two world premieres will be staged in this season, as we take on one of the great novels of the county, Tristram Shandy, and one of the great contemporary novelist to come from the country, A.S Byatt. New voices also feature with plays from Laura Wade and Tom Wells, and from theatre companies such as TongueTied and the Flanagan Collective. Look out for the Yorkshire Season stamp throughout the season in the most unexpected places and let curiosity be your guide. Don’t forget York Theatre Royal members get 15% off two tickets to all shows plus discounts at the Café and Bar.

TakeOver13 has arrived! We’re literally taking over the theatre, bringing a selection of exceptional, acclaimed touring work to York, as well as exploring the boundaries of performance in the theatre and beyond. In the midst of our programme of drama, comedy, spoken word, dance, puppetry and magic, we present our Imaginarium and a brand new production of The Mercy Seat by Neil LaBute, so there promises to be something for everyone at this year’s Festival. Look out for the logo on events throughout the brochure, and we look forward to welcoming you to every one of them. From all at the TakeOver team.

Luke is the first in his family to go to university, and he’s determined to stop his irritating fireball of a brother from following in their father’s footsteps by joining the army.

Elizabeth Mansfield's gripping portraits of Edith Piaf and Bertolt Brecht bring both vividly to life in a full, dramatic evening, marvelously interwoven with song. As far apart as you can get, Piaf and Brecht, two great figures of European chanson and ballad, connect by contrast: Piaf engages the heart, Brecht engages the mind. But Brecht’s songs, like Piaf’s, are full of theatricality and drama, and in this tour de force performance, accompanied by Stephen Rose, two very different and compelling world views emerge.

In a vivid, hilarious 75 minutes, Fear of Music time-bends between 1985 and 1990, piecing together the prelude and aftermath of a tragedy. Packed with beautiful observation and outrageously good jokes, Fear Of Music is about two boys with starkly different futures, surrounded by mixtapes, guitars and ambitions, discover how easy it is to get lost in a country that doesn’t look after its own. Baba Yaga, grannybandy, the hagspectacular, is partial to human flesh…and she’s not alone.

Merging myth, fairytale and raucous Greek philosophy - performance storyteller Sally Pomme Clayton undresses the myth of Eros and Psyche to ask ‘what is the path of love… ?’

Making their tonguein-cheek selections from the Crick Crack Club’s quirky, magical and comedically gruesome menu will be performance storytellers Tim Ralphs, Clare Muireann Murphy and Ben Haggarty.

Combining classical mythical romance with Plato’s Symposium, this raunchy, compelling performance of spoken word and sound, questions our ideas of beauty, suffering, and the choice to live.

Dine out on the cannibalistic side of fairytale, myth and urban legend, in the company of characters who endeavour to eat others, or even themselves – with varying degrees of success. Enter a very wild haven of fairytale…

THE ODYSSEY

TUE 19 MAR

TUE 19 – WED 20 MAR

Dive head first into the absurd world of the Russian poet, iconoclast and false moustache wearer Daniil Kharms. Three scabrous storytellers let narrative escape them as comic vignettes, metaphysical ponderings and bouts of senseless violence provide constant distraction. Expressionist silent film meets grotesque slapstick in a world where clocks have no hands and a cucumber can kill a man.

The Story that changes every time it is told...

BEULAH

The myth of Odysseus’ epic journey was ancient when Homer committed it to writing. Almost three thousand years later the stories still echo through our narrative memory.

is a delicate folk musical wound with original music, puppetry and poetry. Inspired by the writings of William Blake it explores dreams, reality and how we understand the very fabric of our world. “what is now proved was once only imagined” William Blake.

Since Autumn 2010 over 150 actors, musicians, choreographers and writers have worked with Tim Carroll (The Globe, Royal Shakespeare Company) and The Factory, to turn their unique spirit of spontaneity, playfulness and imagination to Homer’s epic story.

Meanwhile, in the Kuwaiti desert, Lance Corporal Si Jennings and his unit are waiting to invade. And he can’t quite believe it. In 2012, millions watched an exEnglish teacher defeat a teenage grime artist in a rap battle. But it's a lot more complicated than that. MOZART COSÌ FAN TUTTE THU 11 APR One of Mozart’s most famous operas, Così fan tutte is a high energy, laugh-a-minute comedy about making mistakes in love. In one day, two pairs of fiancés are parted, and new fiancés found – or so it seems. This new period production will be sung in English.

VERDI SIMON BOCCANEGRA FRI 12 APR

ENGLISH TOURING OPERA

Simon Boccanegra is a compelling drama set in the Italian port of Genoa. The title character is a former pirate who returns to the city to become its leader. Verdi’s depiction of the shimmering Mediterranean is wonderful. So too are the characters he creates. The large orchestra and chorus make taking this opera on the road a massive undertaking, so this is a rare chance to see this little-toured masterpiece outside of London. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.

DONIZETTI THE SIEGE OF CALAIS SAT 13 APR Donizetti’s rarely performed epic The Siege of Calais, tells the story of the Burghers of Calais, who offered up their lives to save the citizens of their city from the English army. ETO’s new production includes poignant scenes between the young couple at the heart of the drama and between the leader of the city and his anguished followers. Meanwhile, at the gates, the triumphant King Edward III shouts for blood. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Tristram Shandy Book Group TUE 5 FEB, 5 MAR & 9 APR 7.30PM

iSHANDY FRI 19 APR – SAT 11 MAY Written by Richard Hurford Very loosely based on the novel by Laurence Sterne with footnotes, gratitude, savoury snacks and pregnant pauses. Members of a teachers’ Book Club meet to discuss the latest ambitious read in their season of Yorkshire classics, the insurmountable Tristram Shandy. It’s fun loving English teacher Susan’s turn to host and as always, she insists on an elaborate fancy dress theme. As the friends gather dressed as characters from the novel, excitement builds about meeting the group’s newest member. After all, he was the one who suggested Tristram Shandy in the first place! However, this is no ordinary cosy night in with a good book as the evening takes some extraordinary twists and turns. As confusion mounts and hilarity ensues, the meeting descends into debauched absurdity and this cunning comedy becomes as saucy, surreal and dangerous as Sterne himself. The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman is a novel by Coxwold based writer Laurence Sterne, released in nine volumes over seven years from 1759. There will be several associated events linked to this new production to help celebrate the 300th anniversary of Laurence Sterne’s birth. Your father is a control freak The family business is a millstone round your neck Home feels like a prison And yet you have dreams … This powerful drama written and set in the North of England, 1912, is an unflinching portrayal of an industrial Edwardian family on the brink of collapse. John Rutherford is a tyrannical patriarch, blind to the hopes and feelings of his family. The success of the family-owned glassworks, Rutherford & Son, takes precedence over everything … even happiness. In a household run on fear cracks begin to appear. The emotional pitch builds up like a pressure cooker. The dramatic voltage intensifies as Rutherford’s absolute authority is challenged and a catastrophic family mutiny begins to unfold, threatening to destroy his world and his factory.

The Mercy Seat was one of the most significant artistic responses to the events of September 11th 2001. He is outraged at the thought of his mum marrying ‘the enemy’. Can John get to his true love? And who will Olivia choose? Shakespeare’s Globe at York Theatre Royal

by William Shakespeare

WED 26 JUN - SAT 13 JUL This is a fantastic opportunity to see Shakespeare’s Globe opening a new version of the first part of The Wars of the Roses here in York before they take the production to London. The plays which make up Shakespeare’s Henry VI create a world without ideology; a savage time, when the heroes are not kings, but formidable women, such as Joan of Arc, or rebels, such as Jack Cade. Individual tickets for all performances: Adult Under 18s New Stalls/ Dress £20 £13 Upper Circle £14 £10 Gallery £12 £8 Schools £8 - £10

Bold characterisation, black comedy, rhetorical power and, in the personality of Henry VI, touching pathos combine in Shakespeare’s powerful rendering of a country racked by civil war. We will conclude The Wars of the Roses with a production of Richard III produced by York Theatre Royal and Nottingham Playhouse in our Autumn Season. Shakespeare almost certainly did not set out to write to write a trilogy, so each play can be enjoyed without knowledge of the others.

New Stalls For a completely new theatre experience we are bringing you closer to the action by raising the Stalls seating.

Following the death of Henry V, celebrated for having united England and subjugated France, divisions appear at the highest levels – first between those around the infant Henry VI, later between the two great factions in English politics: the houses of Lancaster and York. Only the young Lord Talbot, locked in combat with the bewitching and enigmatic Joan of Arc, seems capable of redeeming a divided and dishonoured kingdom.

The saintly Henry VI is undermined by his nobles, especially the ambitious Richard, Duke of York, and by the Kentish rebellion, led by the charismatic Jack Cade, popular champion and savage critic of England’s social inequality.

A bloody power struggle opens up between the king’s party, led by the fearsome Queen Margaret, and the Yorkists, led first by Richard, then his sons Edward and ‘that lump of foul deformity’, Richard of Gloucester.
