IT’S ALLYOURS
Meet Beryl and Paul, this season’s Community Ambassadors “I’m delighted that York Theatre Royal is back open again after its fabulous refurbishment – my friends and I have really missed the building. Now that we can drop into the gorgeous new colonnade for a coffee and a catch-up, it feels like the city of York has got its heart back again! But York Theatre Royal isn’t just about the building – it’s also about the people. Everyone who works at the theatre takes the time to welcome you and get to know you. So whether you’re coming to see a great show or popping in for a meeting or a meal, York Theatre Royal is the best club in town.” Beryl
“The theatre was always a building I walked straight past and never took a second glance at because I thought it was something I’d never be part of. But that all changed in 2011 when the theatre advertised for actors to be part of a community play. So I stepped into the world of theatre like a fish out of water, not really knowing what to expect, and auditioned for a part in the play. When I received a phone call saying I’d got a speaking role I was simply over the moon. From a building I used to walk straight by I was about to play its main stage. I had no theatre background but York Theatre Royal made me feel very welcome and it has introduced me to a huge network of friends and contacts. I have since gone on to be involved in all five of its community plays. It is the heartbeat of York.” Paul

YORK THEATRE ROYAL AND NORTHERN BROADSIDES PRESENT
WHEN WE ARE D E I R R A M WRITTEN BY JB PRIESTLEY
Directed by Barrie Rutter Designed by Jessica Worrall Lighting Designed by Tim Skelly
Cleckleywyke, a town in the West Riding, 1908. The Helliwells, the Parkers and the Soppitts are highly respected pillars of their community… but not for much longer. Married on the same day in the same chapel, they gather to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. The celebrations are short-lived when they discover the vicar wasn’t licensed and they are not actually married. In fact, they have been living in sin for 25 years. Watch with mounting glee as the pandemonium switches from horrified social embarrassment to the realisation that they are free from the shackles of long, tedious marriages. Home truths are dealt, bullies receive their retribution and the henpecked are hilariously and most satisfyingly liberated. JB Priestley’s heartily entertaining northern comedy plays right into the hands of the remarkable Northern Broadsides, a company celebrated by audiences for its charisma, vitality and relish of language, now in a creative partnership with York Theatre Royal.

MR DARCY LOSESTHE PLOT
MACBETH DIRECTOR’S CUT
Jane Austen sits writing, her quill scurrying across the vellum.
This furious two-hander takes the bloodiest and most intense of Shakespeare’s plays and strips it bare of its regal cushioning, evoking the tawdry domestic world of contemporary serial killers in an erotic and violent theatrical assault on the senses. It is lyrical, apocalyptic, extreme and dangerous.
She is dreaming up Darcy, a proud, lip-curling, handsome creation in very tight pants. But then a door squeaks, a visitor approaches and Jane hastily hides her work. Now left to his own devices, Darcy embroiders his own storyline while his creator stitches her quilt. When Jane returns she finds the plot has moved on and Darcy is dancing to a rather different tune. LipService explores the world of women writers, scribbling in secret or under pseudonyms, squeezing in their writing among the hustle and bustle of taking tea, choosing chintz and the odd attack of the vapours…
Volcano has been making extraordinary theatre for nearly thirty years, and remains Wales’ most consistently inventive performance company. The new Macbeth – Director’s Cut is directed by company founder and original cast member Paul Davies, and features a new generation of performers.
Award-winning comedy duo LipService, makers of Withering Looks and Inspector Norse, celebrate Jane Austen’s life 200 years on. “The Laurel and Hardy of literary deconstruction” The Guardian Tickets: £18 (*see p36 for booking info)

MURDER, MARGARET AND ME THE MYSTERY BEHIND AGATHA CHRISTIE’S GREATEST SLEUTH
Written by Philip Meeks In the early sixties two national treasures were the creative force behind one of British cinema’s most successful franchises. But there’s an intriguing mystery behind the Miss Marple movies: they were almost never made… Agatha Christie didn’t want Margaret Rutherford to bring her most cherished creation to life – and Margaret Rutherford was mortified at the prospect of sullying her reputation with something as sordid as murder. This is the story of the real reason why the acting legend and “funniest woman alive” didn’t want to take on the role that made her celebrated across the world. Margaret and Agatha form an unlikely friendship filled with afternoon tea, brandy snaps and gossip. Meanwhile Agatha turns detective herself and she’s on a mission: she’s determined to unearth Rutherford’s tragic and shocking secret. ”Moving, mirthful, and entertaining from start to finish, this is a gem of a play” The Scotsman Directed by Damian Cruden Tickets: £30–£12 (*see p36 for booking info) Relaxed Performance Thursday 2 March, 2pm AD Thursday 2 March, 7.30pm, Saturday 4 March, 2.30pm BSL Friday 3 March, 7.30pm CAP Saturday 4 March, 2.30pm

YORK THEATRE ROYAL CHOIR WE ARE STARTING UP A NEW SEWING GROUP! Come along and take the opportunity to learn new skills, brush up existing ones or take part supporting a community project. We want to create a place where you can come and enjoy sewing, no matter what your experience. Workshops will be relaxed so you can take your time and even help yourself to tea or coffee. If you are interested in coming along or would just like to find out more please contact the wardrobe team on wardrobe@yorktheatreroyal.co.uk.
The Choir is an exciting new project that has grown from the desire of singers involved in York Mystery Plays 2012, Blood + Chocolate and In Fog and Falling Snow to have a year-round permanent group. It is unique amongst choirs as the only choir in the UK affiliated with a professional producing theatre, offering the opportunity to work with professional creative and technical teams on an ongoing basis. We are particularly recruiting for tenors, basses and first sopranos and rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings.
