SEE HOW THEY RUN FRI 20 SEP – SAT 12 OCT Written by Philip King

Don’t panic! This popular 1940’s British comedy is family-friendly farce at its most frantic and hilarious. War is about to break out in frightfully English Merton-cum-Middlewick, but the conflict is mostly over the Harvest Festival decorations. In one mad-cap evening a high powered Bishop, a handsome actor, an escaped German prisoner of war, a curtaintwitching neighbour and several dog-collared clerics descend on the usually sleepy Vicarage. The Vicar’s new wife Penelope - a glamorous former actress - tries desperately to hold it all together in the face of mistaken identities, enemy invasion and utter chaos. Pilot Theatre, Slung Low & York Theatre Royal

BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE THU 3 – SUN 20 OCT Written by Mike Kenny During the Christmas of 1914 the Lord Mayor of York sent out a chocolate tin, designed and made at the Rowntree's factory, to every soldier from York who fought at the front. As news came of the young men who would never return home the women of the city stepped into the jobs at the factories and the landscape of the city changed forever as its people struggled to reconcile beliefs of conscientious objection against family loyalties. Pilot Theatre, Slung Low and York Theatre Royal collaborate for the first time to bring the modern city of York to life with the stories of the workers and owners of the chocolate factories alongside those young men who gave their lives to defend the homeland. Audiences will have a unique experience as they follow the story through the streets of York, watching the events unfold in and around some of York's landmark buildings whilst listening in to the characters' conversations via headphones in a surprisingly intimate way. Theatre as you have never seen, or heard it before. With a cast of over 200, this production will offer audiences theatre on an epic, cinematic scale. It will transport you to new places and show you the city of York in a new light. The ghosts of the past will walk amongst you. Directed by Alan Lane Designed by Anna Gooch

CAN’T STAND UP FOR FALLING DOWN FRI 25 OCT – SAT 16 NOV Written by Richard Cameron They didn’t know one another, but they all knew him. Three women… One man… and the event by which they’re inextricably linked. Written as a series of interconnected monologues, Richard Cameron’s multiawarding winning play is as beautiful as it is tragic. Set in South Yorkshire, against the noir mode of moorland, water and stone, this is an extraordinarily delicate portrait of love, perseverance, heartbreak and strength. “As a record of one man’s heartless destructiveness, Cameron’s play is itself cumulatively and salutarily devastating… Building up a picture from many partial perspectives” The Independent “A small unexpected one-act gem” Daily Mail Directed by John R Wilkinson

MAIN HOUSE The Original Theatre Company and Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre present

West End and Broadway hit in 1962 creating stars out of a young Kenneth Williams and Maggie Smith, The Private Ear and The Public Eye are by the acclaimed, award-winning British playwright, Sir Peter Shaffer (Amadeus, Equus). The first major revival in 50 years of these intimate one-act comedies – performed on the same night – gives us a fascinating window into the changing attitudes to life and love in the 60s. In The Private Ear, will reclusive Bob win the heart of the beautiful Doreen, or will slick Ted steal her away? And in The Private Eye, Charles suspects his young wife of infidelity. Can private detective Julian find the truth? Bob expects help. Charles expects proof. But in this darkly comic double bill nothing is as it seems. The Private Ear and The Public Eye star Jasper Britton, one of the UK’s leading classical actors (Race, Marat/Sade, The Last Cigarette), Steven Blakeley, (PC Geoff Younger in Heartbeat, with theatre credits including Dry Rot and Funny Peculiar), Rupert Hill, (Jamie Baldwin from Coronation Street, with theatre credits including When Harry Met Sally and Future Me) and Siobhan O’Kelly (Inspector George Gently, Mutual Friends). TUE 12 – SAT 16 NOV By Henrik Ibsen Translated & directed by Stephen Unwin Oswald returns from Paris to honour his dead father. As his mother begins to feel the presence of ghosts from the past around her, Oswald discovers there is more to his mystery illness than he first thought. Only by uncovering the truth can they both be free… This production of Ibsen’s masterpiece is inspired by the artist Edvard Munch’s extraordinary stage designs for the play previously seen only once, in Berlin in 1906. A powerhouse of vital and vivid productions of new and classic plays, the award-winning English Touring Theatre’s recent credits include three Moliére adaptations by poet Roger McGough; The Hypochondriac, Tartuffe, The Misanthrope, and The Sacred Flame and Anne Boleyn co-produced by Shakespeare’s Globe. Silent Film Special Event in partnership with The University of York

RICHARD III TUE 19 – SAT 30 NOV Written by William Shakespeare Shakespeare’s ruthless and cunning Richard plots, calculates and murders his way to the throne in one of the most chilling portrayals of political tyranny ever written. This production explores the parallels between the devious Richard, who is full of paranoia, humour and irresistible charm, and our modern world of political monsters; men who have led campaigns of fear and oppression with seductive rhetoric and persuasiveness, in the pursuit of absolute power. Ian Bartholomew plays the murderous and power hungry Richard, in one of the greatest and most thrilling of Shakespeare’s roles.

On 27 Nov at 6pm we will be screening a silent film version of Richard III in the main auditorium. The film stars celebrated stage and screen actor Frank Benson as a deliciously dastardly Richard in a precious piece of film and theatre history recorded on the stage of Stratford's Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in 1911. The film will feature musical accompaniment and, in a performance first, will be voiced live by our cast from the stage production to a commissioned 'silent cinema actor script' .

BRASSED OFF Adapted by Paul Allen Based on the Screenplay by Mark Herman

FRI 14 FEB – SAT 1 MAR Passionate and inspiring – this funny and heartwarming drama is a celebration of human endeavour and community spirit in triumph against all the odds. To coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Miners’ Strike of 1984, we are proud to present this production of Brassed Off. It is 1992, Grimley Colliery faces the threat of closure and the future of the brass band seems uncertain. With the miners torn between redundancy packages and the picket lines, bandleader Danny’s hopes of winning the national brass band competition seem like a distant dream. But the arrival of flugelhorn-playing Gloria brings hope, romance and controversy to the Yorkshire brass band on the brink of collapse. Featuring The Railway Institute Golden Rail Band, the rousing score includes Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez and Jerusalem. Directed by Damian Cruden

TakeOver Festival 2013 After two fantastic weeks in March and June, we are now approaching October, and the last week of this year’s Festival. There’s lots to look forward to in our October programme: Residency Award winners, Root Theatre, are working with the young people of York to research and develop a brand new production, The Only Way is Chelsea’s (see p30), we’ll be playing host to plenty of exciting touring work, and throwing a Launch Party to kick off the week in celebratory style. For four years the TakeOver Festival has proven itself an innovative, successful model for engaging young people in the arts and developing new audiences. We want to talk to representatives of other arts organisations about TakeOver, why it’s vital to educate the next generation about working in the arts, and how it could benefit the industry. In our October week, we’ll be holding a conference on the Takeover Festival; if you’re interested in coming along, please contact Joy Waters at takeover@yorktheatreroyal.co.uk

Conflict east of the Mediterranean; a struggle for power; betrayal; a hostage situation; sectarian divide; a subjugated nation - and lovers from opposing sides caught up in the turmoil. Babylon, under its ruler Nabucco (Nebuchadnezzar) has conquered Judea and, as always, it is the people who suffer, their lives plunged into the maelstrom of dramatic events. Verdi’s opera brings to life these events through powerful choral and orchestral music that was to inspire the movement for Italian independence and subsequent unification in the nineteenth century. It was his greatest operatic success to date and “The Hebrews’ Chorus” became universally popular, as it is to this day.

SECRET HONOUR The Last Testament of Richard M. Nixon

WED 11 SEP By Donald Freed and Arnold M. Stone "One of the funniest, unsettling and affecting plays I've ever seen." New York Times Sequestered in his home, a disgraced President Richard Milhous Nixon arms himself with a bottle of scotch and a gun to record memoirs that no one will hear. He is surrounded by the silent portraits of Lincoln, Eisenhower, Kissinger, and his mother, as he resurrects his past in a passionate attempt to defend himself and his political legacy. Secret Honour is a searing interrogation of the Nixon mystique and an audacious depiction of unchecked paranoia.

At an Old People's Home in Crapper's home town of Thorne, Joe - a 'maintenance engineer' (toilet cleaner) - has the job of a lifetime on his hands: he's got to get all the toilets even the awkward one in room 8 sparkling clean in preparation for a diamond jubilee royal visit. THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING SAT 21 SEP How much is beauty worth? What will people pay for an air guitar on eBay? Can I have a glass of milk? Middle Child present

BILLY WITH HIS BOOTS ON FRI 20 SEP

These urgent questions and others are answered in The Price of Everything, a performance lecture about value. Daniel Bye's whistlestop tour of bizarre facts and impassioned arguments is occasionally shambolic and often tendentious but always a joy to watch.

Billy is a cowboy fanatic. Every day he sees the world in his own way, as a Western-style drama. To friends and family this seems harmless enough, until he gets caught in a media whirlwind surrounding the decision to reinstate capital punishment. The hunt for the first victim soon turns into the ultimate reality show, and Billy is the star.

Comic, provocative, and possibly a tiny bit sad, this show is a must if you've ever wondered about the difference between the price of an object and its value.

CROW THU 19 SEP By Dominic Kelly Intelligent, ruthless, stark, graceful - crows haunt both our outer and inner landscapes. Dominic Kelly accompanies these blackfeathered tricksters through a northern borderland where neither crows nor people are quite what they seem. THE OLD WOMAN, THE BUFFALO AND THE LION OF MANDING SAT 12 OCT By Jan Blake, Kouame Sereba, Raymond Sereba Hunters, kings and women of power become entangled in prophecy, mythology and insult in one of the most exciting birth-of-a-hero tales in the world – The Birth of Sundiata Keita, legendary founder of the great West African Malian Empire. In this epic performance of majesty, humour and passion, acclaimed storyteller Jan Blake is accompanied by the virtuoso, award winning Sereba brothers whose dramatic song and music cradles the story in an evocative and exhilarating soundscape.

MR SANDMANN – BRINGER OF DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES SAT 23 NOV By Ben Haggarty Internationally renowned for his dynamic and challenging performances, Ben Haggarty slips behind the lights into the dark side of the fairground, where you risk getting more than you bargained for. Via freak-show and moonshine bar, ready yourself for an intense and alarming journey through the ambivalent mythology of the Sandman.

This inspiring tale reaches across centuries, from its origins in thirteenth-century Africa to the conflicts in our own time when its telling is forbidden.

Flirting with Americana; drawing on urban legend, fairytale, myth and folklore, and paying oblique homage to Heinrich Von Kleist, ETA Hoffman, Hans Andersen and Nick Cave, Haggarty surrenders his sanity to the magnetic pull of a ravenous moon.

STUDIO TALKS As part of the International Centre for Arts and Narrative, York Theatre Royal and York St John University jointly curate a series of talks. For each event we bring together different kinds of voices (from the arts and sciences, from academia, industry and public life) that provide different perspectives for an engaging, stimulating and convivial evening of debate. Mon 7 Oct, 7pm – Narrative and Food The making, eating, sharing, obsessing about and enjoying of food are essential to not just our culture but to all cultures. Not many things are truly universal but food is surely one of them. Drawing from a range of contributors – including academics, foragers, artists and storytellers, this event will explore the role of food in the stories we tell ourselves about who we are, what we believe in and where we come from. Mon 4 Nov, 7pm – Narrative and Mental Health Stories of mental distress have been taboo. The individuals’ story could be obscured by the psychiatric diagnosis or unspoken through shame or risk of ridicule. The situation has changed: blogs, social media and celebrity confessions have increased the visibility of mental health narratives. Is this to be unreservedly welcomed? A range of speakers will discuss this and other matters related to our stories of mental health. Free entry, please book via Box Office
