DIRECTORS’ LETTERS
Dear Dame Lulu, Sorry but I hadn’t realised you had been a child star. Dame by the age of five, quite an achievement. I also note by the look of things from your “recent” photo that The Sweeney is clearly back on the box, safari suit and medallion how very now. tc isti Arttiis earr Artistic, Dear The burden of carrying your career has weighed heavy on my shoulders, and although I still have a figure to die for, I felt my face was beginning to look older than my 39 years. I decided drastic action was needed when I was recently on a packed no 4 bus and a 98 year old pensioner (who was recovering from two hip replacements and a full lobotomy) insisted on giving up her seat for me. I know you have encountered similar situations – indeed, I’ve heard on the banana-vine that your wife will never go anywhere in public with you because people just assume you are her granddad! We both know that when I go to that great frontcloth in the sky, Pantomime at the Theatre Royal will no longer exist. Life for my thousands of Babbies & Bairns will change drastically. After years of seeing only our annual ‘rubbish’, for the first time in their little lives they will be introduced to a cultural experience they never knew existed – entertainment! As you can see from the accompanying photographic plate I have endured a complete face-lift and full hair transplant. I have done this not for vanity, but for the sake of our little local pantomime. My new image will serve us well for the future, and when the future arrives I’ll have another face-lift. It’s a young world Artistic and I’m ready to change my name to ‘Lulu’ and join them! I remain, York’s Dame,
BERWICK KALER PS – I saw your wife Mandy reading a brochure the other day entitled ‘Care Homes for Elderly Artistic Directors’. Just thought I’d mention it!
I knew you were suffering somewhat over the past months as bits kept falling off, I’ve collected them and kept them on ice until medical science catches up. My only concern has of course been our Panto, not you and I am pleased to see that you have taken drastic action on the reconstruction front giving us a rosy future of youthful bounding about the stage. Alas that I could afford similar work to be undertaken, I am indeed not yet 35 but as you can see from my recent head shot the past 15 years of panto direction have indeed taken their toll, or is it working with you? Lulu is a great new stage name (I always felt that Kaler had more of an agricultural rather than theatrical ring to it) and believe that you could now clean up on the cabaret circuit, escapology and dog acts are very popular post Britain’s Got Talent. I’d be happy to represent you and see if I can get you a few “gigs” as they say in the world of light entertainment, I only take 25% commission. The travel away from York would suit you and your adoring fans would flock to see you entertain even in working men’s clubs and student unions, where I’m sure Lulu would go down very well. I remain alive…just,

THE MAKING OF ROBIN HOOD AND HIS MERRY MAM! Set Design by Phil R Daniels Rehearsal photography by Ed Sunman
ROBIN HOOD MEN IN SONG AND STORIES Written by John R Wilkinson What life is there like to bold Robin Hood? It is so pleasant a thing: In merry Sherwood he spends his days As pleasantly as a king.
Anthony Munday: Metropolis Coronata (1615)
Robin Hood is always tremendous fun to believe in. We have a hero and his companions, outlaws, surviving by robbery and poaching (fowl means!) while outwitting bumbling soldiers and the miserly Sheriff of Nottingham. It’s also unusually plausible and has closer links nkks with York than you might imagine. The legend comes from three different versions: In 1226 a man named Robert Hod is said to have fled York because he owed money to one of the churches. Edward II is known to have had a valet at York in 1324 called Robyn Hode. Then there’s the Robin Hood who trespassed in a royal forest at Rockingham in 1354. Whichever identification you choose to go with, three things are clear: Firstly “Robin” and “Hood” are both common names throughout England. Secondly, as a result, the basic sources are at loggerheads over a setting for the outlaw’s activities. Thirdly, mostt importantly, none of his extant adventures will come close to the threadbare plot of a York Theatre Royal pantomime! There isn’t a singularly inclusive narrative but, over the years, the traditional combination has remained popular. Robin Hood may have always been a fictional character; the folklorist Francis James ess Child declares him “absolutely a creation of the ballad-muse”, but he is as symbolically heroic as St George or King Arthur. Games, pageants and plays about him have been a regular form of entertainment since the late fifteenth century. He has appeared in thirty-nine ballads and four Elizabethan playlets, all of which circle around the same themes. Robin is a fugitive, although none of the ballads give an explanation for this. He typifies light-hearted courage, defiance of tyranny, generosity and patriotism. He almost always robs from the rich and gives to the poor. He almost always has companions, most notably Little John who is near equal to him in strength and skill. Physical prowess is stressed and valued: there are many archery contests and tournaments, wrestling matches and quarterstaff bouts. Craft and trickery are admired too: many of the stories involve cunning plans, disguise and plots.
You gentlemen and yeoman good, Come in and drink with Robin Hood: If Robin Hood be not at home, Come in and drink with Little John. Anon: Old Rhyme It is hard to imagine a better gang to belong to than the Merry Men. Names like Will Scarlet and Friar Tuck are famous, although there others like Arthur a Bland and David of Doncaster. My personal favourite is Much. Much is usually the Miller’s son, often portrayed as small, and as a bit of a joker. He is always getting himself, and others, into trouble. Much like a certain Dame’s son!

…ANN FORSHAW BOX OFFICE ASSISTANT AND CAPTIONER How long have you worked at York Theatre Royal? 25 Years – starting 12th October 1987! Do you have any nicknames in the Box Office team? Ann ‘Hawkeyes’ Forshaw. I never miss a thing! Describe a typical day during the Panto season. It is pretty much the same as any other time, busy selling tickets to customers over the counter and on the telephone, keeping customer records tidy, dealing with emails, keeping leaflets and brochures stocked up and tidy on display and helping customers with enquiries. When tickets go on sale for Panto, though, it’s become a York Theatre Royal tradition that people queue for hours outside the building. Sometimes overnight! This creates a fantastic sense of community and starts building the excitement until the production begins. What is the most rewarding part of your job? From the Captioning point of view, it enables deaf or deafened clients who do not sign to be able to enjoy shows, including Pantomime. From the Box Office point of view, it is helping customers as much as possible, giving satisfaction to the theatre and the work we do. What has been your most memorable moment so far? As I have been here for so long, I would say the transformation from Manual Booking system to computerised system! Who has been your favourite production over the years? I should say pantomime shouldn’t I?! There have been many many shows I have thoroughly enjoyed, but the most spellbinding performance I have ever seen was Derek Jacobi in Kean and the premiere of The Guinea Pig Club. What is the most challenging part of your job? Can I say? – keeping everybody happy! The most enjoyable and rewarding challenges have been to be part of the team involved with our production of The Railway Children at the NRM and of course this year’s big event The York Mystery Plays 2012. If you were going to star in Panto, which outfit would you choose? I have done amateur pantomime myself and played both the fool and the baddie – enjoyed both so it would have to be the costume of one of those. Berwick’s outfits are extremely heavy, I don’t think I’d want to wear any of his! What are you most looking forward to seeing in the new season? Several plays, but I think The 39 Steps the most. Not sure my nerves would stand Woman in Black (I’m squeamish!!!) How would you describe York Theatre Royal Panto in 3 words? Vibrant, Unique, Special.

York Theatre Royal presents
Written by Mike Kenny Wed 24 Jul – Sat 31 Aug 2013 The Final battle has come and Camelot has fallen into ruin. But it wasn’t always this way. Arthur, the boy who pulled the sword from the stone, would become King of the Britons and the figurehead of a band of knights revered for their bravery and acts of chivalry. As knights and ladies, wizards and sorceresses gather to the fabled round table we will hear stories from a time when myth, magic and mystery were woven into the fate of a kingdom. Discover how Arthur was given his powerful sword, Excalibur, by the Lady of the Lake. Meet Merlin the Wizard, Arthur’s trusted
teacher and friend. Learn of the love between brave Lancelot and Queen Guinevere and of the battle which would bring an end to the treasured realm of Camelot. Created by York Theatre Royal who brought you the hugely successful summer shows The Railway Children, The Wind in the Willows and Peter Pan, this fantastical tale is bought to life with jousting, swords and sorcery. The Legend of King Arthur invites you to come and take your place at the Round Table. It’s not too early to put it in your diary! Expect a magical transformation of the whole theatre building as Camelot is recreated in York for the Summer. Directed by Damian Cruden Designed by Catherine Chapman

York Theatre Royal Founding Patrons York Theatre Royal is nationally recognised for the strength of its engagement with children and young people and is one of the UK’s leading producing theatres. We have ambitious plans for the next few years. We want to increase the reach of our Youth Theatre and involve more young people in our work. We wish to work with innovative artistic partners and seek out the new talent who will enable us to continue to tell stories in inspiring and imaginative ways. These plans require significant funding and the support of fellow cultural ambassadors; those who understand the benefits that a dynamic, forward thinking theatre can bring to a city and the surrounding areas. We invite you to be a part of our plans, and of the future of York Theatre Royal, as a Founding Patron. A £250 gift will help us to make our plans a reality. In return we invite you to be a part of the Theatre and see the difference your gift can have through invitations to exclusive events and regular communication.
