HOME: adverb, to or at the place where one lives “what time did he get home last night?” York Theatre Royal is part of BeSpectACTive! a European project focussed on active spectactorship and audience development across contemporary performing arts. The project is a network of theatres, festivals and universities across 9 different European countries. TakeOver Festival forms part of York Theatre Royal’s BeSpectACTive! programme of events, which is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. TakeOver Festival is also extremely lucky to be part-funded by the Clothworkers Award, which York Theatre Royal won in autumn 2015. The theatre received the award in recognition of its inventive approach to work involving all members of the community, including younger and older people and ‘hard to reach’ sectors who would not normally engage with the theatre.

A girl on a trapeze. The ghost of every glamorous girl you have ever seen on a trapeze high up in the big top, performing to the roar of the crowd. But she’s up-close in this intimate one-on-one aerial performance, made for your eyes only. You hear her breathing, you watch every muscle twitch, you see the bruises. Lots of sweat, no sequins. “The more you reflect on it, the more it delves deeper into the realms of female empowerment, vulnerability, intimacy and control.” HHHH The Herald Winner of 2015 Summerhall Autopsy Award for experimental performance. THE BEGGARS OF YORK

Renowned veteran York poet Don Walls marks his playwriting debut with this sharp, poignant and defiant record of an ongoing chapter in York’s social history. The play is based on the life and experiences of Don’s late son, Peter, who lived on the streets of York for 30 years. Part eulogy, part performance-poetry and part exposé of the criminal justice system, this brand new, homegrown tour-de-force will make you reconsider what happens on the very street outside your window. An adventurous exploration of life and death set in Ciudad Acuña, Mexico. Through physical storytelling, an all-female cast tell the story of Milagros, who after the discovery she has terminal cancer begins an impassioned desire across the Mexican border towns to seek revenge on all who inflicted violence and injustice on her family.

This award-winning, laugh-out-loud spin on Spielberg’s classic Jurassic Park is a theatrical celebration of cinematic nostalgia. Welcome to the unlikely setting of Lyme Regis Community Centre, where the Park family embark on a journey to a misty past. MEMORIES OF COAL

Join Boy and Girl as they journey through the joy, hope and heartbreak of looking for love. Colourfully created for public spaces, this promenade performance lets audiences follow either Boy or Girl and listen in to their innermost thoughts through wireless headphones. Boy Meets Girl explores the highs and lows of falling in love through an exciting mix of silent disco technology, theatre, music and dance.

What were you like as a child?

Did you ever battle with a conker on a string? Or tell wildly extravagant stories? Featuring an exciting blend of storytelling from Coal in the Garden, a documentary video of memories from York’s elderly residents, and a brand new devised performance from youngsters across the city. Memories of Coal is a cross-generational community project that theatrically examines how perceptions of childhood have changed throughout the years, and asks what exactly is different for children growing up today? Tobias wakes up just like every other normal day, but something is different. Tobias wakes up in a care home not realising he has reached the age of 74. The Forgetting tells the uplifting and touching story of a man who still believes he is 10 years old. It shows how you can live life to the full no matter how old you are, whilst delicately exploring the effects of dementia.

THE GREAT YORKSHIRE GOB-OFF

Nine top poets compete in this poetry slam final for prizes, pride and the title of The Greatest Gob in York! Following heats held at both of the city’s universities, three poets from University of York and three poets from York St John University earned themselves the right to represent themselves and their institutions in this slam final. They’ll be facing off against an all-star team of poets from across the wider city, all of whom are former slam champions. It’s every poet for themselves and the audience are the judges in what promises to be a mindblowing, heart-showing, soul-glowing evening of poetry!
