THE FESTIVAL MADE BY YOUNG PEOPLE FOR EVERYONE. HOP ON BOARD!
facebook.com/TakeOverFestival @YTRTakeOver15 This year’s TakeOver festival is unlike any other. We are delighted to be collaborating with the National Railway Museum while York Theatre Royal goes through its £4.1 million redevelopment. TakeOver is run entirely by 12- to 26-year-olds and we have truly taken over every nook and cranny of the museum – you can stop by for one show, or jam-pack your day full of TakeOver activities. TakeOver 2015 is a unique multiarts festival, immersing itself and its audiences in York’s heritage. We welcome the inquisitive, the adventurous and the imaginative, challenging spectators of all ages to expect the unexpected. We want to inspire both the people of York and its visitors, allowing you to see the museum and city in an entirely different light. I really hope you enjoy the festival! A JOURNEY WITH MAUDE
When I was a little girl in Vienna, I was taken to the palace for a garden party. I can still see the sunshine on the fountains, the parasols, and the flashing uniforms of the young officers. But that was all… before.
Inspired by the ’70s cult classic Harold and Maude, this original, family-friendly production has been specially commissioned for TakeOver, and takes place on board one of the museum’s most treasured carriages.
Enter the wonderful world of Maude, filled with the memories and objects of her past. In this intimate time-travelling adventure, told across the five senses, you’ll be whisked from Vienna to San Francisco to witness moments of this extraordinary woman’s life.
Interplay Theatre Mon 26 Oct–Sun 1 Nov 11:30, 12:15, 14:15, 15:00, 15:45 Running time: 30 mins Tri-Composite Carriage, Station Hall £5 Low capacity: early booking advised Not wheelchair accessible

THE GREAT TRAIN SONGERY Explorer Johnny Acecraft has been let loose in the museum’s Warehouse, and wants to talk about its unusual artefacts in the only way he knows: through the medium of musical comedy!
He will be creating a brand new family-friendly, participatory performance for TakeOver in the form of a tour around the museum’s Warehouse and collection.
John Hinton is an award-winning theatre maker who specialises in bringing the realms of science and history to the stage.
Expect the unexpected. And expect it to rhyme.
Hinton has previously created performances for the Botanic Garden in Cambridge, the Natural History Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum. He has also written internationally successful musical comedies about Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Pythagoras and Norse mythology.

PHANTASMAGORIA We enjoy stories because they have an ending: the falling of a curtain or the shutting of a book. But what happens when we cannot trust our storyteller? The worlds of horror and fantasy collide in a sensory journey of the imagination, as once-extraordinary entertainer Charles Alderdice attempts to bring Lewis Carroll’s darkest work to life. As Alderdice stumbles between his greatest fantasies and his deepest fears, the troubled whispers of a showman’s faded mind lead the audience through this intimate and immersive tale of desperation and delusion. HookHitch Theatre Thu 29–Sat 31 Oct 12:30, 13:15, 14:30, 15:15 Running time: 20 mins Fruit Van, Platform 6, Station Hall £4 Low capacity: early booking advised Accessible
THE GENTLEMAN FOR NOWHERE The platform is still. A train rumbles into the station and rolls to a halt. Three people step aboard… The Gentleman for Nowhere is an immersive piece based on Dickens’ Mugby Junction, an anthology of railway-themed short stories. Staged in the Gresley Buffet Car, built in the 1930s, this mysterious Victorian tale will come to life before your very eyes. HookHitch Theatre Thu 29–Sat 31 Oct 16:30 Running time: 20 mins Gresley Buffet Car, Warehouse £4 Low capacity: early booking advised Not wheelchair accessible
