FORWARD THEATRE PROJECT AND YORK THEATRE ROYAL PROUDLY PRESENT

TAKEOVER12 PROUDLY PRESENT

SCARBERIA TakeOver12’s Artistic Director, Andra Catincescu, presents a Romany Gypsy re-working of Shakespeare’s comedy of crossdressing and love-making. The Forest of Arden has become a hiding place for all the mavericks in France. Among them is the banished Rosalind, who takes refuge by disguising herself as a boy. Unbeknownst to her, the man she secretly loves has also fled to Arden. Unable to reveal her identity, Rosalind instead offers to coach him in the art of wooing his beloved. This is a story of love and defiance that follows banished lords into a forest where all runaways, rich or poor, become equals. In TakeOver12’s fresh approach to this woodland utopia, the outlaws of Arden live as travellers. The dazzlingly fast Romany Gypsy music takes the audience through a journey that casts the exiles from the luxury of the Court into the world of shepherds and nomads. Featuring a Community Cast.

By Evan Placey

As You Like It is, at its heart, a story about young men and women taking over an outlaw society in the forest of Arden. It subverts oldfashioned rules from the etiquette of wooing to the tyranny of imposed gender roles. As such, it is the perfect choice for the TakeOver12 resident production, and an exhilarating experience for audiences of all ages. - Andra Catincescu, Director, As You Like It

We are very excited to announce an exclusive residency with Forward Theatre Project who have created Scarberia, a brand new piece of theatre for young people selected by the TakeOver board. An associate company of Paines Plough, Forward Theatre Project are a collective of 25 emerging theatre directors, writers and designers who aim to develop relationships between emerging theatre artists and regional theatres. After being commissioned by TakeOver, the Scarberia creative team undertook a five-week research period to develop the piece for a young audience. The team worked with young people in Scarborough, England, and Scarborough, Canada, to coordinate an international pen-pal project that connects young people on both sides of the Atlantic.

An As You Like It workshop package is also available, including Stage Combat and Page to Stage.
