Passionate and inspiring – this funny and heartwarming drama is a celebration of human endeavour and community spirit in triumph against all the odds. To coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Miners’ Strike of 1984, we are proud to present this production of Brassed Off. It is 1992, Grimley Colliery faces the threat of closure and the future of the brass band seems uncertain. With the miners torn between redundancy packages and the picket lines, bandleader Danny’s hopes of winning the national brass band competition seem like a distant dream. But the arrival of Flugelhorn-playing Gloria brings hope, romance and controversy to the Yorkshire brass band on the brink of collapse. Featuring a live brass band playing a rousing score that includes Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez and Jerusalem. Written by Caryl Churchill
THU 1 – SAT 24 MAY George Costigan
How might a man feel to discover that he is only one in a number of identical copies? And which one of him is the original? A Number explores the subject of human cloning and identity. Set in the near future, we witness the conflict between a father and his three sons – two of whom are clones of the first one. Through the eternal debate on nature versus nurture, award winning playwright Caryl Churchill explores what makes us who we are, in a gripping and explosive drama which will feature real life father and son George and Niall Costigan.

BLITHE SPIRIT Written by Noël Coward
FRI 9 - SAT 31 MAY Caroline Harker The Railway Children, Waterloo
This supernatural comedy full of ghostly goings-on and mysterious misunderstandings is a vintage night of laughter and thrills. Novelist Charles Condomine invites the eccentric clairvoyant, Madame Arcati, to conduct a séance, hoping to gather material for his next book. The scheme backfires when he is haunted by the ghost of his temperamental first wife, Elvira, who makes continual comic attempts to disrupt Charles' marriage to his second wife, Ruth, who cannot see or hear the ghost. Noël Coward’s sharp wit, piercing eye for relationships and unforgettable characters have made him one of the truly great comic writers of British theatre with classic plays including Private Lives, Hay Fever and Present Laughter. When first produced, Blithe Spirit became the most successful show that the West End and Broadway had ever seen and has since proved enduringly popular and enjoyable - a true classic. TUE 8 – SAT 12 JUL “We’re unique…. Young…. Unrivalled…. Smashing!” Salford 1959 – 17 year old Jo is desperate to break free from her vulgar, wayward and man hunting mother, Helen. Abandoned by her Mother and left to cope on her own, Jo’s courage is tested yet again when Jimmy returns to sea, and she discovers she’s pregnant. THE STEPMOTHER Written by Githa Sowerby
WED 5 – SAT 15 MAR It's 1911. What do you do if you're a nineteen year-old girl in need of care and support? What do you do when a much older widower, with two young daughters, offers you kindness and security? And what do you do, ten years later, when you begin to realise you have been betrayed? In the character of Lois Relph, Githa Sowerby has created a truly modern woman, juggling the demands of children, business and conscience at a time when the pace of social and technological change is fast and getting faster... Written in 1924 (by the writer of Rutherford & Son) and revived in 2013 at The Orange Tree Theatre, to huge acclaim, The Stepmother is a sensational rediscovery, brought to Yorkshire for the first time by York Settlement Community Players. ’York Settlement Community Players, the original trendsetters among York’s rising tide of adventurous community theatre companies.’ (Charles Hutchinson, The Press, March 2013) Times: 7.45pm with a 2pm matinee (Sat 15 Mar) Tickets: £10 Tue – Thu & matinee, £12 Fri & Sat, £10 concessions Performance Location: Studio

TWELFTH NIGHT (OR WHAT YOU WILL) Written by William Shakespeare
THU 3 – SAT 12 APR Shipwrecked on the shores of Illyria and mourning her lost twin brother, young Viola quickly becomes entangled in the courts – and courtships – of lovelorn Duke Orsino and the beautiful noblewoman Olivia. Viola is whisked into a world of music, pranks and mistaken identities. Disguising herself as a boy, she is caught in the centre of an almighty love triangle. When you’re wooing the woman who loves you on behalf of the man you love, can everyone get their fairytale ending..? Shakespeare’s comic masterpiece about the many forms that love may take is given a fast, fun and folky production by the home-grown company which brought the sold-out Othello to the Theatre Royal Studio in October 2012. With live music and an imaginative staging, the York Shakespeare Project brings this magical tale to life.

Think Disco dancing but to Sinatra, the YMCA to Mozart, and The Twist on chairs. Thomas Keregan and his wife established the theatre in 1734 on a converted tennis court. Ten years later following the untimely death of Thomas, his wife built what was then known as the ‘New Theatre’ on the present site. Our building is a patchwork quilt of many periods. A Roman well hides beneath the stage, 12th century remains of what was once a hospital mingles with the Georgian interior, while the Victorian façade is fused with award winning 1960s poured concrete design. The amalgam of architecture is a fine example of how builders of the past would reuse sound walls and encompass them within their development. As part of our major refurbishment in 2015 we will be exploring our rich narrative. We are keen to find out how our building can better serve the people of York and our visitors from further afield. We are also eager to hear stories that you may have; perhaps memories of past Pantomimes, wartime visits when theatre offered a little escapism or maybe a more recent show or event that will always remain in your memory. If you would like to share this and become part of our story, please write to us or email kaeli.wishart@yorktheatreroyal.co.uk

HIRE THE BALLROOM In the heart of the city of York, The De Grey Rooms house one of York’s hidden treasures; a beautiful neo-classical ballroom. With sprung dance floor, originally used by the Yorkshire Hussars and restored by York Conservation Trust, the Ballroom and adjoining Cocktail Bar are particularly suitable for wedding receptions, dinners, balls and special occasions or conferences. We can seat up to 140 people for a formal dinner and have an overall capacity for 180 guests.
“THE DE GREY ROOMS IS AN ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS VENUE AND I WILL BE SURE TO SPREAD THE WORD”
“We can’t thank you enough for everthing you did to make our day so perfect. You and your staff were fantastic and all worked so hard. Everyone said how warm and welcoming it felt, everyone was so friendly and made us feel relaxed. So thank you so much for giving us such a happy and stress free day, we really could not have asked for more.”
