Research Pairing typefaces There are a few websites about pairing typefaces. They normally belong to one foundry that shows pairings between their own products. These websites are very useful and are great tools. However, they are limited to pairing types. http://www.typeconnection.com/step3/drj.php http://www.typegenius.com/
Typography general information There are also great tools around to assist learning about typography. These websites are focused on the letter structures, grids and more. http://www.typographydeconstructed.com/ http://www.thinkingwithtype.com/contents/letter/
Learning and tips In addition, there are several blogs and websites where people can find resources about typefaces, such as Pinterest, Typewolf, Creativebloq, Typekit. https://typekit.com/ https://www.typewolf.com/ https://designschool.canva.com/blog/the-ultimate-guide-to-font-pairing/

Some tips to pair typefaces According to typekit blog. http://blog.typekit.com/2012/05/23/type-study-pairing-typefaces/
The power of superfamilies One of the simplest techniques for combining typefaces is to pair typefaces that belong to the same superfamily. Superfamilies — also known as type systems — are extended type families. They contain a large set of weights and widths and typically span different type classifications (e.g., there may be both a sans serif and a serif).
Bump up the contrast Choosing typefaces that are not similar is another approach to pairing typefaces. Pairing with contrast can reinforce visual hierarchy, eliminate monotony, and add balance to the overall page. Too much contrast can be jarring, so opt for just a few points of difference. Many successful pairs feature a serif typeface with a sans serif typeface or an outspoken voice with a neutral one.

Selecting and pairing typography
I am building Instructional typography application
For Graphic Designers Students and professionals
In order to Assist the app user to pair typefaces
By Build an app where the user can compare and test typefaces combinations, while it provides information—such as history, designer, classification—and guidance to pair them. Provide a social platform based on image galleries where the users can interact by “like/ favorites” and reviews.
At a time when Online communities are becoming more and more participative. It is a good opportunity to provide a platform of social interaction where users may also contribute to assist others to pair typefaces for their projects.

Script Hello, my name is Evelyn. First of all, I would like to thank you for dedicating a time to talk to me. I am working on a project which objective is to assist graphic designers, especially students, to select and pair typefaces for their projects. In the beginning, I would like to learn about your process and parameters do complete the task, and then hear about possible improvements to assist a better type selection/pairing and provide you a better experience
1. Do you feel self-confident when selecting typefaces for your projects? 2. Do you have any method to select typefaces them? 2a. Which are your parameters? (If the interviewee respond a dry “yes” or ”no”) 2b. Which are your parameters to pair typefaces? 3. According to your knowledge, what are the factors for a good typeface pairing? 4. Are there any app, software, or website that you use to help you to select them? 4a. If yes, what is the positive and negative
5. Are there any difficulties to find the right typeface for a project and pair them? 5a. Could you specify? (If the interviewee respond a dry “yes” or ”no”) 5b. If yes, how do you overcome those difficulties? 6. In your opinion, do you think social-media may contribute positively to assist typography selection? 7. If there is an app for pairing typefaces, in your opinion, who would use it? Would you be included? 8. Any additional thoughts?

Final considerations + Through the interviews, the app proposal is legit and the demand exists. + The users are clearly divided into two groups: the confident and the non-confident ones. + Confident users usually evaluate typefaces subjectively, trusting their eye and critic evaluation. + The interviewees wants a tool that is practical and efficient to assist selecting and pairing typefaces. + It’s not uncommon for them to know tools and forget about them or not use them. + They see a potential on social media as a contributor to learn and achieve their objectives.

Design principles Instruct and build an online community This is a tool that assists designers to select and pair typefaces for their projects. This way, we want encourage users to feel comfortable and confident about their choices. In addition, we want to provide a media where users can interact, provide feedbacks and ask other designers for advices. Then, they can build their own network and visualize other works as a reference.
Friendly and practical We want the user to feel comfortable using our app. The language should be friendly and easy to understand to encourage learning and engagement. Navigating through the app must be easy. We want to attend the users problems especially with selecting and pairing typefaces without being time consuming. However, it will also provide extra information in case the users want to learn more about their choices.
Light and high end As this app will be developed for designers, the aesthetic must be attractive, democratic and versatile. It should avoid excessive information on screens to facilitate understanding of the content, without being plain. The technical quality of graphic elements must be high and avoid mainstream design trends.
