W S NE The European Investment Bank intends to raise its total lending in the European Union and Pre-Accession countries to as much as EUR 70 bn in 2009 in response to strong demand for its funding in the current tough economic and financial climate. Lending has advanced particularly strongly in three key areas targeted by the Recovery Package: small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs); energy and mitigation of climate change; and investment in the poorer, ‘convergence’ regions of the EU. Lending for SMEs amounted to EUR 4.4 bn to end-May – more than half the full-year target of EUR 8 bn. As well as providing extra liquidity, the EIB is helping to ease the impact of widespread risk aversion in the wider financial sector by expanding its activities into a broader range of financial products than ever before.

EIB lending could reach EUR 70 bn in 2009

to realise the potential of fuel cell and hydrogen technologies and to create a cleaner energy system for the future. Around €140 million have been allocat-

ed to this second call, with €71.3 million by the Commission matched by in-kind contributions of the industrial partners. The 29 project topics aim to put fuel cell and hydrogen energy technologies on the market two to five years sooner than what is estimated without the support it offers. Selected teams of researchers will investigate bottlenecks in the whole range of applications for these energy technologies, from cars to large scale power plants, as well as the whole supply chain from hydrogen production to demonstration of the market-readiness of applications. Breakthrough research should foster the use of hydrogenfuelled buses and fuel cell vehicles. It will help develop hydrogen storage and improve fuel cells’ durability, performance and the cost-efficiency to make green applications such as power stations or laptops ready for the market. This call is the second being launched by this EUwide collaborative private-public partnership whose total budget amounts around €1bn to be invested by 2014.

Alstom recorded a sound commercial performance During the first quarter of 2009/10 (from 1 April to 30 June 2009), the level of orders booked by Alstom, at €4.8 billion, remained robust. Sales, at €4.8 billion, continued to grow, up by 7%. Order intake in both Power and Transport Sectors were in line with the levels recorded in the second part of the previous year, whilst below the level of the first quarter 2008/09 which included the booking of a higher number of large contracts. Power received orders of €3 billion, with commercial successes in gas, steam and hydro. Having registered €1.8 bil-

lion of new orders, Transport confirmed the resilience of its commercial activity across the board. During the first quarter 2009/10, sales increased by 9% in Power and by 3% in Transport versus the first quarter of the fiscal year 2008/09, reflecting the progressive trading of orders booked during the past periods. The total backlog, at €46.6 billion, represents around 29 months of sales on 30 June 2009. ”Despite the very challenging environment, Alstom managed to record a satisfactory level of orders with a book-to-bill ratio at 1. As previously an-

nounced, in the short term, demand for rail transportation should remain sound, driven by large projects, some of which come from stimulus packages. In power generation, the new equipment market should continue to be impacted by delays in the decision making of customers on future power plants. The progressive delivery of orders in hand translated into higher sales, up by 7%”, said Patrick Kron, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Alstom.

- First Half Net Profit Up 10.4% - Global Market Share rises to 5.0% for the first time ever (Seoul, Korea) Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea’s largest automaker, sold 1,403,931 units (domestic & exports: 719,478 units, overseas plants: 684,453 units) worldwide in the first half, a 5.8 percent decrease from a year earlier as demand for automobiles in the global market fell. Net profit rose 10.4 percent to 1,036.8 billion won in the first six months of the year from 939.6 billion won a year earlier. Sales declined 18.5 percent to 14.1 trillion won from 17.3 trillion won a year earlier. Operating profit fell 31.9 percent to 811 billion won as exports from domestic plants declined from a year earlier and the company increased marketing expenses to raise brand awareness and enhance overseas dealers. Hyundai Motor reached 5 percent of the global market share in the first half of this year for the first time ever, amid a 15 percent decline in global automobile demand compared to a year earlier. This result was

achieved by expanded share in developed countries including U.S., China and in Europe as the automaker boosted efforts to raise its brand image and continued to expand marketing activities in local markets. Especially in China, Hyundai sold 257,000 units in the first half, a 56% rise from a year earlier, mainly helped by its China-exclusive models. Hyundai Motor, which launched its first Hybrid Electric Vehicle, Elantra LPI Hybrid, in this month, will continue its efforts to develop highly fuel-efficient and environmentally-friendly cars, such as plug-in hybrid and fuel cell vehicles, in response to higher oil prices and consumers’ environmental concerns. The company plans to make profits continuously in the second half of this year by introducing two new models, new Sonata and Tucson.

Broad approval for integration of Volkswagen and Porsche Commission approves acquisition of Chrysler by Fiat The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the acquisition of the US-based vehicle manufacturer Chrysler Group LLC by Fiat S.p.A. of Italy. After examining the operation, the Commission concluded that the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or any substantial part of it. Chrysler produces and sells cars and trucks under the brand names Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge. Chrysler does most of its business in North America where it derives more than 90% of its turnover. It does not have any manufacturing facilities of its own in the EEA. Fiat is a diversified Italian industrial group engaged principally in the manufacture and sale of passenger cars (Fiat, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Abarth, Maserati and Ferrari), agricultural and construction equipment (CNH Case New Holland), trucks and industrial vehicles (Iveco), and automotive components (FPT Powertrain Technologies, Magneti Marelli and Teksid). On 30 April 2009 Chrysler filed for protection from its creditors under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code and announced plans for a global strategic alliance with Fiat. On 10 June 2009, after a judicial procedure, the company formerly known as Chrysler LLC sold substantially all of its assets, without certain debts and liabilities, to a new company that will operate as Chrysler Group LLC. Fiat has acquired an initial 20% equity interest in Chrysler and entered into a number of agreements with the company to provide it with access to certain Fiat technology, platforms and power trains. Despite Fiat’s stake of only 20% in Chrysler, which it may increase in future, Fiat holds rights in the decision-making process of Chrysler that will enable it to exercise sole control over Chrysler. The Commission’s examination of the transaction showed that the horizontal overlaps between the activities of Chrysler and Fiat are limited. The merger would therefore not significantly change the competitive structure of the markets for the manufacture and supply of passenger cars. The Commission also examined the possible vertical effects arising from the acquisition in light of Fiat’s presence on a number of markets such as automotive lighting and transmission systems that are purchased by manufacturers of passenger cars. The Commission’s examination showed that the transaction would not lead to competition concerns for two main reasons. First, as Chrysler is not present on the upstream markets concerned, the transaction would not strengthen the market position of the merged entity or the extent of its vertical integration. In a similar manner, given Chrysler’s relatively limited presence in the EEA on the passenger car market, the merger would not significantly enhance the merged entity’s market position and it would therefore not have the ability or incentive to restrict its competitors’ access to the inputs necessary for their vehicle production.

Wolfsburg/Stuttgart, 23 July 2009 - The Supervisory Board meetings of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft and Porsche Automobil Holding SE which took place in Stuttgart on Thursday cleared the way for an integrated automotive group combining Volkswagen and Porsche. The details of a final joint concept will be worked out over the coming weeks. Representatives of the Porsche and Piëch families, the State of Lower Saxony and the workforce of both companies have however already expressed their great satisfaction with the foundations that have now been laid. The Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, Dr. Ferdinand K. Porsche must remain Porsche.” The Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Christian Wulff, underlined that the solution represented the best course for both companies: “This solution accommodates the interests of all concerned and safeguards the strength and performance of Germany’s automotive industry.”

MHI’s New Turbocharger Plant in Thailand to Begin Mass Production Move Completes Japan-Europe-Asia Tripolar Global Structure, For Fully Optimized Production and Procurement Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has completed the construction of a new turbocharger production plant near Bangkok, Thailand, and today began mass production. The new plant mainly produces cartridges, the core portion of turbochargers, and plays an important role in the company’s global production and supply structure. With the addition of the new Thai plant, complementing production bases in Japan and the Netherlands, MHI brings to completion an optimum production and procurement system based on a tripolar global structure encompassing Japan, Europe and Asia. To celebrate the launch of mass production, a ceremony took place at the Thai plant today. The new plant serves as a plant of Mitsubishi Turbocharger Asia Co., Ltd. (MTA), a wholly owned turbocharger manufacturing subsidiary established by MHI in January 2008 within the Amata Nakorn Industrial Estate, located approximately 20 kilometers southeast of Bangkok.

The plant has capacity to produce 3 million cartridges p.a. (per annum) and undertakes a task of supplying cartridges globally, which has been so far performed exclusively by the Main Plant of MHI’s General Machinery & Special Vehicle Headquarters in Sagamihara, Japan. The Thai plant also has capacity to produce 500,000 turbochargers p.a. as finished products, and undertakes sales and handle local marketing activities as well as technical and quality assurance services. The new plant, construction of which began in April 2008, has a 60,000 square meter (m2) floor area on 147,000 m2 property. The plant started production equipment installation this January and began trial production in March. Initially the plant is operating with 130 employees, and staff will be expanded to 700 once production reaches full momentum. Although market of turbochargers has been sluggish since last year under the influence of the economic and financial crises after continuous market expansion worldwide, the demand is expected to increase sharply again over the medium to long term due to implementation of intensified emissions controls from 2010 and more stringent fuel efficiency requirements. With the addition of the new Thai plant, MHI has now completed a structure enabling swift customer response worldwide. While benefiting from avoidance of currency fluctuation risks and from flexible production shifting among its three production bases, MHI looks to establish a production structure for 6.9 million turbochargers p.a. and to secure a 25% share of the global market.

The Pavan Group untouched by the global economic crisis The turnover for Pavan – a leading manufacturer of machinery and plants for the food industry - has grown by 66% in the past five years and reached EUR 90 million in 2008 with exports to 120 countries representing 95% of total sales. Consolidated profits amounted to EUR 6,7 million (a 46% increase). CEO Andrea Cavagnis commented: “The results achieved in 2008, in a complicated world scenario characterised by strong fluctuations in the prices of commodities and of raw materials such as wheat, confirm once again the strength and competitiveness of our Group. We have increased our workforce, our production volumes, and the number of installed plants with a significant growth of our market shares in the American and African continents. The company is positioned in the middle to high end market thanks to the high degree of customisation of its production plants and processes. “2009 is going to be again a positive year for us but without the growth we have experienced in the past. The crisis in the food industry is less intense than in other sectors. We have good business chances, considering that there are few competitors at our level and that there are interesting markets we can address. In spite of the economic and financial crisis, every year we invest 5% of our turnover in the research and development of products and technologies capable of satisfying the new requirements set by our customers. This endeavour for continuous improvement makes us confident enough to face the new competitive challenges which await us in the years to come.” On occasion of the presentation of the Balance Sheet, the company also presented the Social and Environmental Report for 2008. “This is a clear token of our commitment in pursuing a way of doing business which fully respects the environment, utilizing to the highest extent our personnel and their skills, while working side by side with world scientists in order to develop clean and sustainable technologies. “

The publicly traded construction group, announced yesterday that it had successfully closed the negotiation for the largest single order in company history. STRABAG – as part of a consortium – has been selected to build the second segment of the A2 toll motorway between Nowy Tomyśl in western Poland and Świecko on the German border. Construction will take place from July 2009 until May 2012. STRABAG will operate the segment until the year 2037. The entire project volume including design and financing stands at € 1.6 billion. STRABAG holds a main share of the construction company A2 STRADA Sp. zo.o. The order volume of STRABAG AG is more than € 1 billion. The construction volume amounts to € 1.3 billion, increasing the STRABAG Group’s total output volume in Poland by € 1 billion to € 2.1 billion. In order that, Poland is going to be the second important market of the concern after Germany and before Austria. The financing consortium is composed of 11 international banks led by the European Investment Bank (EIB), which alone will take on over € 1 billion of the financing. The other banks include Deutsche Bank of Germany, WestLB, Calyon and Société Générale of France, Caja Madrid of Spain, as well as a number of Polish banks. Dr. Hans Peter Haselsteiner, the CEO of STRABAG SE, is pleased about the new order: “This shows that, even during difficult times, a good project with professional partners is capable of arranging a high financing volume. Our capacity utilisation in Poland will not be a cause for concern for the next few years. Services for the second segment include the construction of 106 km of new motorway, the modernisation of a further 17 km, plus 80 bridges, the modernisation and upgrade of the main toll stations, parking and 4 motorway service areas. Services for energy providers: Bilfinger Berger wins new orders with a total volume of €200 million Services for energy providers: Bilfinger Berger wins new orders with a total volume of €200 million. Bilfinger Berger has won new orders from the energy industries in the Netherlands and Australia with a total volume of €200 million. “In the energy sector, demand for our services has been encouragingly stable in all markets”, says Herbert Bodner, Chairman of the Executive Board at Bilfinger Berger. Bilfinger Berger Power Services will design, manufacture, assemble and commission the high-pressure piping system as well as the medium and low-pressure piping for two power plant units at the RWE power plant in Eemshaven, the Netherlands. The two units generate a total of 1,600 megawatts. They will be added to the network in 2012 and 2013 and, once online, will provide electricity for 3.2 million households. The use of modern high-pressure pipes from Bilfinger Berger leads to significant efficiency improvements: with no change in power output, 20 percent less hard coal is used as compared to older power plants, corresponding to an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of 2.5 million tons. Just a few weeks ago, the Company won an order from RWE for the supply of piping systems for two identical units at the Westfalen power plant in Hamm, Germany. Bilfinger Berger currently has orders for high pressure piping from RWE totaling €450 million in its books. In Australia, the energy group Delta Electricity awarded the maintenance and operation of the Wallerawang power plant to Bilfinger Berger Services and extended a maintenance contract for the Mount Piper location. The two hard coal fired power plants, with a combined output of 2,400 megawatts, make a major contribution to the supply of electricity in New South Wales. On the basis of an additional new framework agreement, Bilfinger Berger Services will also modernize the electricity network in the greater Sydney area for Energy Australia.

Estonia: Analysis of a Housing boom.

European Commission - DirectorateGeneral for Economic and Financial Affairs

Financial market liberalisation and financial convergence after EU accession, extremely low real interest rates as well as fast rising disposable income and wage expectations contributed to rapid lending growth in Estonia from 2000 to 2007. Favourable fiscal provisions further contributed to the phenomenon. The inadequacy of and progressive dissatisfaction with the housing stock inherited from the Soviet period also resulted in greater demand for new housing units.

News Księga1.indb 13

On the supply side, labour migration to neighbouring Finland exacerbated structural weaknesses, such as the initial relative scarcity of private construction companies. This resulted in houses reaching record prices in 2007, up by 400% since 2000. Such prices proved unsustainable. A downward adjustment of house prices has now taken place, reflecting e.g. higher interest rates, tightened lending conditions, as well as the severe economic downturn. Despite a general feeling that the real estate market seems to be nearing the bottom, it can not be expected to regain strength before the whole economy starts recovering. In a longer term perspective, phasing out fiscal incentives and exemptions, as well as strengthening real estate taxation, might become advisable.

A small and heavily forested country, Estonia is the most northerly of the three former Soviet Baltic republics. Not much more than a decade after it regained its independence following the collapse of the USSR, the republic was welcomed as an EU member in May 2004. The move came just weeks after it joined Nato.

Overview

These historic developments would have been extremely hard to imagine in not-so-distant Soviet times. Estonia was part of the Russian empire until 1918 when it proclaimed its independence. Russia recognised it as an independent state under the 1920 Treaty of Tartu. During the two decades that followed it tried to assert its identity as a nation squeezed between the rise of Nazism in Germany and the dominion of Stalin in the USSR. After a pact between

Hitler and Stalin, Soviet troops arrived in 1940 and Estonia was absorbed into the Soviet Union. Nazi forces pushed the Soviets out in 1941 but the Red Army returned in 1944 and remained for half a century. The rapidly expanding Soviet planned economy brought hundreds of thousands of Soviet immigrants to Estonia, causing widespread fear among Estonians that their national identity would eventually vanish. Russians account for up to a third of the population. The legacy of the Soviet years has left a mark which the country carries with it into its EU era: Many Russian-speakers complain of discrimination, saying strict language laws make it hard to get jobs or citizenship without proficiency in Estonian. Some Russian-speakers who were born in Estonia are either unable or unwilling to become citizens because of the language requirements. After a deca-

de of negotiations, Estonia and Russia signed a treaty defining the border between the two countries in May 2005. The Estonian parliament ratified it soon afterwards but only after it had introduced reference to Soviet occupation. Moscow reacted by pulling out of the treaty and saying talks would have to start afresh. The Estonian language is closely related to Finnish but not to the languages of either of the other Baltic republics, Latvia and Lithuania, or to Russian. The country has unique traditions in folk song and verse, traditions which have had to be strong to survive the many centuries of domination by foreign countries. Estonia enjoyed an investment boom following EU accession, but in 2008 its economy was badly hit by the global financial crisis. With the economy expected to shrink by about 15 percent this year, the government has adopted austerity measures in an effort to stay on course for euro entry in 2011.

Chairman of the board Mr. Piotr Glaner

T

Production Director Mr. Jarosław Kwiatkowski

ermetal Glaner is a Polish company specializing in the manufacture of gratings and hot-dip galvanizing services. Established in 1989 as a family business, the company since then has grown to an enormous enterprise employing 220 people in three manufacturing plants. Their products and services have all the hallmarks of professional and modern solutions geared towards customers’ special needs and requirements. This simple quality-oriented approach earned the company a good reputation

14 Manufacturing-Journal Księga1.indb 16

The company’s development was paved with brave decisions concerning mainly the implementation of relatively big investments and advanced technology. One of them was the construction of a hot-dip galvanizing plant in 1998 in Piła. At that time it was one of the biggest and most modern galvanizing plants in Poland. Thanks to this investment, the enterprise managed to build a strong market position. Stateof-the-art technology, which Termetal Glaner had in those days, gave it a considerable advantage over competitors. In 2000 the firm reached even more important milestone when it purchased a grating production line that offered the most modern solutions in the whole Europe. The production line was as-

sembled next to the galvanizing plant in Piła. Combining those two elements (i.e. the galvanizing plant and the production line) triggered technological upgrading. The technology developed by leaps and bounds, bringing the company to the top rungs on the European markets. Soon after, the manufacturing output grew rapidly and the enterprise was perceived as an export giant. Seventy percent of the output was exported. The sustainable development was also accompanied by a synergy effect caused by positive investment-related factors. New dreams incrementally came to light, as the company was strengthening its market position. As a result, innovative concepts were put into practice. In 2008 Termetal Glaner successfully completed the construction of a multi-purpose hot-dip galvanizing plant located in Grudziądz. This investment put the enterprise among exclusive Polish companies which form elite groups of galvanizing plants. The manufacturing capa-

city quadrupled, reaching the threshold of 6000 tons per month, which gave the enterprise the third place in the country. Another crucial undertaking was an investment in the second grating production line. The investment was located in Piła where new manufacturing facilities were built and the production started in June this year. The new line is more technologically advanced than the previous one and, more importantly, it enables the company to boost the efficacy of the manufacturing process, thus helping to bring the products and services to the markets in Europe, the Middle-East and in Northern Africa. The manufacturing capacity soared from 1200t per month to about 2500-3000t per month.

Policy that sells

Termetal Glaner won the confidence of myriad customers, including, but not limited to, manufacturing plants, power plants, chemical plants, petrol stations, shipyards etc. The business policy is not much revealing, though. As a company’s representative says, the enterprise simply plumped for the quality, promptness and flexibility in satisfying the customer’s demands. And competitive prices add luster to attractiveness of products as well. At present members and directors of Termetal Glaner are happy to see the business growing more and more popular, which is especially important in the midst of the global financial crisis. As regards the reasons for success, the company owner’s abilities for implementing business plans come to the fore. His charisma, business intuition and a stroke of luck dictate the direction and pace of the development. On the other hand, today’s technological race requires from everybody constant changes and alterations. Those who follow the changes and implement them on regular basis assume the leadership. Therefore, the regular improvements would not be possible without committed and creative staff members. Their work and commit-

ment is highly valued by the company owners. In general, people working with Termetal Glaner make a good successoriented team that is capable of what by many is thought to be unattainable.

Products and services

Termetal Glaner is associated with the manufacture of gratings, although it also offers galvanizing services. The company does not prioritize particular products or services. On the contrary, it considers all products and services to have equal importance for further development of the business. It can be inferred from the investments made by the enterprise that two products are developed almost simultaneously. On the one hand, the firm wants to create a better offer by revamping the galvanizing technology and, on the other hand, it develops new solutions related to gratings.

Hot weld grids

Hot weld catwalk grids are fabricated as

components of floors, ceilings and stairs. Since many of them are multi-purpose they are widely used in industrial and general building. Recently they have come to be used even more frequently as protective and decorative elements on exteriors and within interiors of buildings, industrial halls, sports buildings etc. Hot weld grids can be used for: covering communication catwalks, covering channels and securing man-holes, access hatches for gantries and ceiling tracks, covering light suspended ceilings, covering communication conduits on bridges and gangways, external and internal stairways, fencing segments and ornamental partitions, external and internal elevation components and 1001 other uses. There are many advantages of heat welded catwalk grids. However, the most noteworthy are: • •

stable carrying surfaces; the high degree of adhesion to the

sub-floor - even with standard fabrication, arising from the grooving of the rods; high static and dynamic durability if compared to weight; the greater durability of hot weld grids in comparison with cold pressed grids with the same carrying strut parameters, arising from the melding of struts and rods, i.e. using the whole cross-section of the road for carrying loads; long life of grids arising from the uniform welding of struts and rods and hence lack of notches; high resistance of the rod and strut welds to corrosion because there is no loosening of the joins and the arising of corrosion points, as it happens, for example in pressed grids; easy and swift assembly and disassembly of covers; light passing through ceilings and staircases, easy lighting; self-cleaning of ceiling and step surfaces.

Hot-dip galvanizing

services The phenomenon of corrosion, or the easy oxidation of iron in steel, is a well-known and problematic phenomenon ever since products have been made

16 Manufacturing-Journal Księga1.indb 18

from steel. Steel products not protected from outside factors are characterized by a shorter utilisation time for safety or aesthetic reasons. In practice, various methods are used to prevent this detrimental effect. However, they all have a relatively short period of effectiveness and in all cases they do not meet all expectations. This is because it is difficult to select an anti-corrosion substance which will resist the majority of factors from the external environment. Of all the currently known anti-corrosion methods for protecting steel products, the best one is hot-dip galvanizing. Comparing costs of hot dip galvanizing service products shows it is currently the cheapest and most effective way of preventing corrosion. Paint coatings, though aesthetic, are in practice very expensive and do not possess sufficient resistance to mechanical damage and in the case of an inadequate preparation of the sub-surface, rust points appear and the coating begins to flake and fall off. Covering the surface with oils or grease, by contrast, has only limited possibilities of application. That

is why hot-dip galvanizing seems to be the best method. A great significance is attached to the quality of the galvanizing mixture. It means that the coating applied in our galvanizing plant is characterised by: • • • • •

manufacture according to EN ISO 1461 standards; a sheen maintained for 3 months from the date of galvanizing; highly attractive appearance; uniform and even covering of the whole surface; increased adhesion to the product thanks to careful selection of the components of the galvanizing material; increased resistance to scraping and other mechanical damage; increased flexibility.

A QUALITY THAT WEARS WELL

M

ada is one of the biggest Polish manufacturers and distributors of protective gloves, clothing, footwear, head, face and hearing protectors as well as uniforms for industrial workers and firefighters. Besides, it also offers fire equipment and cleaning products. The company earned a good reputation as a clothing provider thanks to a clear-cut policy highlighting top quality, reliability and promptness and putting those qualities in the foreground as the firm’s motto. Taken as a must for further development and competitiveness of Mada, the high quality becomes dominant in achieving the main object – the customer confidence, an indicator of a strong and secure position as a supplier of the best quality products on domestic and overseas markets. Written by Marcin Zimny

Setting the direction

Established in 1990 as a distributor working in the clothing industry, Mada developed innovative ideas and soon after started to manufacture own products. When this decision was made the company faced new challenges lurking behind market-driven principles and clothing industry requirements. The firm had to meet all requirements for the manufacture of clothes by re-

ceiving certificates that confirmed the suitability of products for use in the mining and smelting industries. The implementation of quality management system in compliance with ISO 9001 guarantees high quality, making Mada even more trustworthy. Customers were quick to spot the company and it did not take long to trust it. The growing number of recipients called for new methods and practices in order to satisfy the needs of each client. Launching comprehensive services let the firm equip workers with protective and working clothing, ensuring the safety at work. High quality goods are certified by specialist laboratories and other competent units. Apart from serving their function as highly protective products, they are also comfortable, which is also highly valued by customers. Transportation services are an additional asset that customers can expect when doing business with Mada. Finally, there is the promptness of delivery which is yet another quality boosting the customer satisfaction. Longstanding experience in the clothing industry and an ambitious management policy pushed the company to assume leadership on the domestic market and develop an efficient strategy geared to satisfaction of customers’ needs. High quality, reliability and promptness, as mentioned before, so indicative of Mada’s business policy, come to the fore as the main goals, but there are also other relevant aspects that the firm holds in high esteem, e.g. following innovative market trends, monitoring the market, getting along with business partners, reacting to customers’ needs immediately and, last but not least, looking for

new business contacts and customers.

Things that set Mada apart

Mada has an experience and all means necessary to execute even the biggest and the most demanding and elaborate orders which are tailored to the customer’s requirements and individual preferences. The business activities, conducted on a large scale, follow the highest standards and comply with relevant provisions applicable to individual protection measures. To retain the secure market position Mada invests in the firm’s development, setting up new retail outlets. The company’s seat is situated in Warsaw while the office is in Radom. At the moment Mada has also two manufacturing plants, one located in Radom and the other in Zabrze, and marketing departments in Warsaw, Radom and Zabrze. The long-lasting experience in manufacturing and trading in protective clothing and industrial safety products makes the firm eligible to boast a professional consulting on individual protection products. What is more, cooperating with Mada puts its business partners in a privileged position because, as an employer enjoying the status of supported employment enterprise which offers jobs to disabled persons, the enterprise allows the partners to reduce payments made to the State Fund of Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons (PFRON) when buying the company’s products.

Making a success together

Success achieved by the company seems to have come from a combination of features pointing to different aspects of activity. Among the leading ones there are diligence, qualified and loyal staff, well-thought-out investments, technological development, modern machines, high quality products, constant development and competitiveness. Except for being the leader in its branch of industry, Mada is also a supported employment enterprise where 90 per cent of staff is represented by a disabled workforce. Over 200 highly qualified people working in Warsaw, Radom and Zabrze is the company’s greatest pride. Had it not been for them, the business would not be as successful as it is now. Therefore, improving employers’ skills and organizing various training courses is part of the company’s long-term investment in human capital. Furthermore, the enterprise offers employees other amenities such as rehabilitation and various treatments aiming to improve the workers’ general health. Today, as a fully-fledged

18 Manufacturing-Journal Księga1.indb 20

business, Mada is a secure employer and reliable provider of high quality products. It relishes the idea of customer-oriented approach as well as functionality of the manufactured clothing. Even though there appears to be no golden mean for prosperity in business, Mada found its way to make the products attractive and unique. As regards the developmental status quo, the firm does not slow the pace down, focusing on intensive promotional campaigns and co-operation with manufacturers and importers of modern fabrics.

Offer

The clothing is made using a wide range of modern fabrics and sewing additives. The cotton-based fabrics are colourfast, unshrinkable and highly resistant to mechanical wear. The products are manufactured in compliance with effective standards and have the required marking. Additionally, it is possible to print a design on them or strengthen the material by using, for example, double seams. New products are regularly tested for their suitability in underground mines. The company’s offer includes uniforms for industrial workers and firefighters: clothes, gloves, footwear, headgear, belts, emblems and insignia. Mada has a wide array of protective gloves which safeguard the user against various hazards occurring at work stations. Depending on expected use, the gloves can be leather, leather and fabric, knitted or coated in rubber or plastic. Footwear brought to you by Mada includes products by the biggest Polish manufacturers of protective footwear: Protektor, S.I. “Równość”, Fagum-Stomil, PP Gardia, Zgoda, Strzelce Opolskie. Carefully selected footwear gives the workers protection against mechanical and chemical risks, burns, cuts, cold, dampness etc. The company also manufactures leather products designed to protect the body against mechanical injuries such as abrasion, metal splinters, thermal radiation etc. All leather individual protection products manufactured by the company are authorized to be used in the mining industry. Besides, Mada offers personal protection equipment featuring hearing, face, eyes and head protectors, airway protection products and fall protection equipment. In this section the company provides makes by the following manufacturers: Andropol S.A., 3M, Secura, Maskpol, UVEX, Fagum Stomil, “Protektor” Lublin, Spółdzielnia Pracy “Jerzy Śniadecki” of Toruń. The offer contains also cloths, cleaning products and related accessories as well as towels available in

different patterns, sizes and basis weight.

Riding the waves of market

In the recent years the company has decided to invest in research, certification and assessment of products carried out by competent units and laboratories. The efforts finally yielded a desirable result: Mada, as one of only few companies in the business, has met the strictest requirements, which resulted in their products being highly competitive on the market. Even despite the current slowdown of the Polish economy the company prospers very well and makes its utmost to reduce the effects of shakedown to the minimum. Flexible and eager to co-operate with other companies, Mada is very enthusiastic about facing new tendencies on the domestic and overseas markets. At the moment the enterprise developed co-operative bonds with international companies which supply the Polish firm with materials, resources and other commodities. But it wants to enter new markets in Europe and looks set to establish long-term business contacts with reliable enterprises.

Mada’s pride and joy

As a clothing manufacturer, Mada can be proud because it: • won the customer confidence and satisfaction;

• • • •

took actions sensibly and effectively; assumed leadership and outperformed competitors; earned a reputation as a reliable partner; can boast well-qualified staff and good work environment.

Other, perhaps more tangible achievements include numerous awards received by the company, e.g. The Company of the Year 1998 of the Radom Region, The Radom Wings (1999), the Business Gazelle (2000) and Transparent Company (2009). In short, Mada is the kind of company which shows the potential and, thanks to up-to-the-minute technology and transportation services, guarantees high quality, competitive price, promptness of delivery and professional consulting service for the customers interested in protective clothing and related products. By applying the principles of partnership in day-to-day practice, the enterprise holds relationships with suppliers, recipients and employees in high esteem. On the other hand, it keeps improving the firm’s organization by modernizing technical facilities and implementing new technologies. And finally, it follows a qualitative policy aiming to bring only top-notch products to the market.

PAVING THE WAY FOR THE FUTURE

W

olimex is a producer of concrete elements and building contractor which has been operating on the Polish market incessantly since 1984. During the period of twenty-five years the enterprise has won the customer trust and earned an impeccable reputation that have been confirmed by numerous certificates and prizes. It is most respectable as a reliable partner in the construction, including, but not limited to, such areas of industry as the construction of sewage systems and wastewater treatment plants, and hydro-technical services related to river engineering. High quality of both products and services is central to the company’s policy, therefore Wolimex is perceived as a top-notch service provider. Written by Marcin Zimny

A history of success

Founded in 1984, PPUH Wolimex belongs to Mr Eugeniusz Wojak who started the business upon opening a company specializing in land reclamation and

20 Manufacturing-Journal Księga1.indb 22

ground works, i.e. reclamation of marshy lands, sewage works, installation of sanitary systems and central heating. Five years later, the company was renamed Handrolmek and entered the construction industry as a ground building contractor. It also started trading in building materials after Handrolmek launched the production of prefabricated concrete materials. Other services that the firm developed at that time included metalwork, woodwork and transport services within Poland. Thanks to the extensive experience of the owner, the company grew in strength very quickly. In 1992 Mr Wojak purchased the Factory of Metal Products located in Sławków. The same year the enterprise saw another change of business name (into the present name Wolimex). The business offer grew even larger in 1993 when the company began executing investments related, among other things, to ground engineering, development of communication system, building and repair of roads and bridges. Since 2006 the enterprise has been successively bringing

Construction Industry > Wolimex 2009-08-04 10:38:36

even more services to the market: construction of sewage system pipelines, water supply pipelines through directional drills, refurbishment of pipelines using burstlining technology, and sewer monitoring. More recently, the company completed preliminary works and started the extraction and treatment of aggregate used for building roads and other facilities. Currently, PPUH Wolimex can boast modern and up-to-theminute facilities: a construction plant with special-purpose workstations, a natural aggregate purification plant, a sandstone mine, a concrete units plant and a transport and equipment base.

Go hydro technology!

The company’s owner has always taken all due care to develop the business. In 1991 the enterprise developed cooperative bonds with the first big investor – the Regional Water Supply Office of Kraków. Initially, the business was given minor jobs, but soon after it gathered momentum. For example, in 1996 the firm engineered the Mizerna stream by building a stone and concrete crib. The most important works carried out by Wolimex were building a river bank made of fascine and stones with groyne in Zakliczyn and dams in Dąbrówka Szczepanowska. All those works were performed in deep water, hence they required a lot of experience and technical equipment. Another praiseworthy achievement was the construction of an artificial canoe track located in Wietrznice. Built in the 1990s, the investment was a comprehensive service, as apart from constructing the track, Wolimex was also responsible for building an access road and installing video and technical devices indispensable for hosting canoeing competitions. As part

of the investment, it also built a grandstand, a small bridge and installed lighting system for the track. Additionally, it is worth emphasizing that Wolimex is extremely valuable as regards the protection of the environment in Poland. In the course of last ten years, the company has built twenty wastewater treatment plants, thus significantly contributing to the execution of environmental policies of many regions.

Prime the pipe

The growing number of competitors has motivated the company to revamp its services and products. In order to meet the demands of customers, last year Wolimex has started the extraction of sandstone and production of aggregate in a sandstone mine situated in Męcina. The aggregate is the first class quality product. What is more, it is part of the company’s normal practice that all products are tested for the aggregate quality by the Kraków General Directorate for Roads and Motorways. Thanks

Construction Industry > Wolimex Księga1.indb 23

to satisfactory technical parameters, the products manufactured by Wolimex are suitable for use in road building and hydro technical industries. Additionally, the possibility of customized orders, common practice in Wolimex, aims to fully satisfy individual needs of every client. The constant development yielded a streak of investments. In 2001 the company was granted a license to conduct business and extract resources in Charzewice, a village located near Zakliczyn. Three years later the company finished the construction of an aggregate production and processing plant and started the production and sale of aggregate at an output of 100 ton per hour. Then, in 2007 the plant was modernized and rebuilt, thus becoming one of the biggest and the most modern plants in the region. As a producer, Wolimex accepts special-purpose aggregate orders which are tailored to suit the customer’s preferences. The high quality of products (freeze resistance, grindability, high degree of crumbling etc.) ensures the highest quality concrete and blacktop. Moreover, the provider offers all-in aggregates featuring a high rate of consolidation if filtering properties are good. Wolimex also produces a wide range of vibropressed concrete and reinforced concrete elements which are used in the hydro technical industry as well as in road building. The present offer includes the following elements: concrete and reinforced concrete rings and pipes, concrete covers, concrete blocks, road curbs, sewage trays, paving slabs, shelters for fish, openwork grids, road boards, flagstones and other tailor-made products. Another important commodity is ready-mix concrete sold under various brands and delivered to the customer’s address together with

Manufacturing-Journal 21 2009-08-04 10:38:39

specialist equipment, i.e. Stetter concrete pumps, concrete mixers and mixers with a pump for delivering concrete. Transportation of rings, pipes and other goods is offered too. In this respect the company can boast a large number of vehicles and machines, including platform trucks, sided lorries, truck-tractors, caterpillar bulldozers, loaders, caterpillar excavators, road rollers and a crane.

Non-excavation methods

Apart from regular excavations, Wolimex’s offer encompasses execution and refurbishment services using non-excavation methods. One of them is directional drilling which proves to be ideal for installation of water supply, sewage or any other system in places where a regular excavation is impossible. Directional drills can be done beneath roads, railway tracks, water-course or on wet areas. This method not only helps to stave off any damages to facilities under which the drilling is done, but it also does not disturb the traffic and has all features of a highly precise method which keeps the track and depth of the drilling under control. For this kind of works, the company has two Tracto-Technik machines (Grundodrill 15 and Grundodrill 15N) with surge mechanisms. Wolimex has also machines suitable for a nonexcavation method of installing steel pipelines. This method is very precise and it can be used in places where difficult ground conditions prevail. There is one more solution offered by the firm – the static burstlining. It is used for refurbishment of steel, asbestos, cast iron and stoneware pipes. Burstlining allows for the renovation of pipeline accompanied by an increase in its diameter, which is particularly significant in the case of low capacity grids. The implementation of the procedure is possible owing to two Tracto-Technik machines

22 Manufacturing-Journal Księga1.indb 24

(Groundburst 400G and Groundburst 800G) which Wolimex has at its disposal.

The high quality reminder

Advanced technical skills, efficient organization supported with knowledge of new construction technologies have always made it possible to meet customers’ demands. Many domestic and foreign investors experienced the professionalism of Wolimex on numerous business-related occasions. Their opinions and references corroborate their satisfaction. What guarantees the highest quality of services as well as of products, which are compliant with world-standards, are Quality and Environmental Management Systems which the company successfully implemented as part of the development policy on the one hand and the compliance with international requirements on the other. The systems are effective in areas covering both preparation of investments and execution of works and services. At the moment the Wolimex enjoys a strong and unshakeable position. The market standing of the enterprise is reinforced by numerous awards and distinctions such as:

• •

Gold Badge “Distinguished in the Construction and Building Materials Industry” awarded by the Polish Minister of Development and Construction in 1995, Honorary Title “Tiger of the Economy” awarded by social and economic magazine Wieści in 2001, Title “Perfect Company”, category: “General Contractor of sports and recreational facilities” awarded by the editorship of Kalejdoskop Budowlany in 2002, Title: “Leader of the Małopolska Region 2002” and “Golden Company 2002” awarded by the governor of the Małopolska region and the president of the Małopolska Trade and Entrepreneurship Chamber and head editor of Gazeta Krakowska, Titles “Company of the Year of the Limanowa district” in the years 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 awarded by the District Administration Office of Limanowa, Certificate “European Guarantee of the Highest Quality” and the title “Prizewinner in the construction for general, sanitary and hydro technical building” awarded in 2007 and 2008, “European Standard 2008” awarded by the Media Partner Group.

and Edward iron ore mines were developed in the neighbourhood to supply the steel works. After World War Two, Stara Góra mine was developed. It remained operational until early 1970s. It was when Zakłady Górniczo Metalowe Stąporków was established, and in 1976, pursuant to a decision of the Minister of Heavy and Agricultural Machinery - ZUK Stąporków was established. The then major products were mechanical stokers, stoker drives and slag collection systems. Economic changes in Poland at the end of 1980s prompted the company to start manufacturing products not only for heat engineering industry, but also for a variety of industries using metal products. As of 1st March 1995, the company was transformed into a company wholly owned by the State Treasury. In September 1995, the shares of the enterprise were subscribed by National Investment Funds. The leading shareholder was the National Investment Fund of E. Kwiatkowski. Since 2004, 96% of the company’s share capital has been owned by STALMAX. Since August 2007 the company has been quoted at the Warsaw Stock Exchange.

Simultaneously to ownership changes in the recent few years, the company has been making investments in its machine inventory, developed its manufacturing technologies and improved its staff’s vocational qualifications. It enables the enterprise to take up to more and more ambitious tasks. Next to that, year-long experience in metal products manufacturing puts the company in the leading position among major domestic businesses of this kind. At ZUK Stąporków, lots of efforts also is put in the promotional activities of the company and its offer. The enterprise is aware of the role and importance of participation in diversified industry meetings, trade fairs, etc. Owing to that, it actively participates in those events on a regular basis. An example of that may be the ENEX international trade fair. The purpose of the event, which took place in March 2008, was to present new technologies in using biomass as fuel. The stall of ZUK Stąporków enjoyed great interest among the visitors as well asother participants of the fairs. What it resulted in, was a number of new and promising contacts with customers as well as other players of the industry. Furthermore, the company is eager to exchange ideas and concepts with its customers as well as competitors. It is a regular participant of meetings and forums of heating engineers. Their goal is not only to present the company, but also to deliver professional consultancy. The interest of other participants confirms the leading position that ZUK Stąporków boasts in its industry. Active participation of ZUK Stąporków in a variety of industryspecific events brought the company a number of certificates and distinctions. Next to the ones peculiar for the business the enterprise represents, ZUK Stąporków has been also distin-

BUSINESS THAT POWERS UP THE INDUSTRIAL CONSTRUCTION SECTOR

FACT BOX FULL NAME: Przedsiębiorstwo Usługowo-Produkcyjne „ELTUR-SERWIS” Sp. z o.o. PRESIDENT: Jan Wędzonka OPERATIONS: Energy ESTABLISHED: 28.12.2000 EMPLOYEES: over 700 people

Eltur-Serwis is a Poland-based limited liability company offering complex construction, installation, repair and maintenance services for the power engineering sector in the following areas: design, organization of the construction site, delivery of materials and equipment, execution, supervision, quality control, warranty and post-warranty service. Professional approach, comprehensive offer and highly qualified staff earned the firm a reputation as a reliable partner and service provider. As a daughter company of PGE Elektrownia Turów S.A. (the Turów power plant), Eltur-Serwis quickly achieved national renown and emerged as a competitive and strong player on the Polish market. Written by Marcin Zimny

The beginnings of the enterprise date back to 1961 when the repair and maintenance section was set up as part of the Turów power plant. In 2000, as a result of modernization of the power plant, the repair and maintenance section was detached from other sections and made independent by forming a separate company. Nowadays, Eltur-Serwis provides comprehensive building, installation, repair and investment services for the construction industry in the power engineering sector. During the past nine years of activity, the com-

pany had to prove that it is a professional and reliable partner in business dealings. Drawing on extensive experience of the Turów power plant, highly qualified staff and advanced technology laid the foundations for a robust development of a newly formed company. Nevertheless, since the power plant was state-owned, a lot of practices had to be revamped. Eltur-Serwis required new ways and methods with a view to increasing the efficacy and adapting to volatile market trends. It also needed to build customer confidence from scratch. Today, almost a decade later, the company can speak of success. The services are highly personalized and adjusted to customers’ growing demands, including, but not limited to, such areas as the quality of service, plan of execution, types of works as well as conditions of payment for services offered by Eltur-Serwis. The company openly admits that employees are the driving force of the business. “Without experienced staff with special qualifications the business providing this sort of services is doomed to failure,” says Jan Wędzonka, the president of the Eltur-Serwis management board. Moreover, the firm is optimistic about investments, particularly in special-purpose equipment and modern technologies, claiming that it is an important element which significantly contributes to the high quality of performance. People always come first, though, as the company’s dictum has it. The

firm employs a total of 700 staff members who feel comfortable and happy to work with Eltur-Serwis. Employees do not need to worry about continuity of employment, because employment stability, as Mr Wędzonka reveals, is at much higher level that it is provided by the Polish labour law. The worker’s privileges, which are ensured by an in-house collective responsibility arrangement (Zakładowy Układ Zbiorowy), as well as career and training opportunities are a standard part of em-

ployment too. The firm is fully aware of the fact that the development of the business can be achieved only when employees develop their skills and knowledge, therefore it allocated the sum of €130.000 (PLN 600.000) for this purpose last year only. And when it comes to the atmosphere at work, it is always cheerful and friendly, as it is created by people themselves. Mr Wędzonka also says that regardless of a position occupied in the company, it is chiefly up to people and their commitment and lack of pre-

judices how they will perform at work.

Setting targets

Eltur-Serwis offers a wide array of services related to building, including repairs and construction. Yet there are certain areas to which the company gives priority. For instance, at the moment it focuses chiefly on repairs, investments and electrical power equipment service. The main recipient of the firm’s services is the Turów power plant and that is why a lot of attention is given to this customer. The slogan “Eltur-Serwis Gwarancją Niezawodności” (lit. Eltur-Serwis – Reliability Guaranteed) encapsulates the general policy in day-to-day business practice. On the whole, the company is responsible for an operation of equipment and devices in the Turów power plant. Currently, a big investment which consists in building a system of biomass co-combustion in fluid boilers comes to an end in the Turów power plant. The task of Eltur-Serwis is to build the system, manage it and provide the power plant with biomass. As Mr Wędzonka reveals, “it will be our contribution to the production of ‘green energy’. In two power units a maximum of 180 thousand tons of biomass will be burnt in two boilers.” The green issues play significant role in the company’s policy as well. The enterprise is fully aware of effects and risks that this type of activity entails in relation to the environment. Therefore, it feels a social and moral responsibility for regional welfare. Thanks to the implementation of PN -EN ISO 14001: 2005 environmental management system, the company is obliged to reduce the negative effects on the environment to the minimum. For instance, in 2008 a washing station for over-oiled elements was completed. The investment was closely related to the targets implemented by the company’s authorities. The washing station makes it possible to wash and clean large over-oiled components, including electric motors (engines), internal-combustion engines (diesels), transmission systems ex. chain transmission systems, scaffoldings, pumps (pumps’ main-bodies and rotors), propelling cylinders (barrels) and conveyors, forklift trucks, chains, ropes (lines), bolts and flaps (lids), valves, throttles (valves) and heat exchangers. Chemical agents used by the station are neither harmful nor noxious to the environment, as they dilute after being dissolved in water. In other words, they are biodegradable. The whole washing process takes place in a closed cycle (cir-

cuit) and, as a result, all environmental perils are entirely eliminated and a nuisance is minimized. By the time the station was built, washing had been harmful to surface waters that were frequently exposed to contamination by oily liquids. Now, with the washing station, this is the thing of the past. What is more, the company is truly engaged in the protection of the environment and management of natural resources, as, for example, it washes squares and plots of lands as well as it waters green areas using collected rainwater.

Fair player

Eltur-Serwis can boast a number of prestigious titles and certificates, which shows that its achievements were noticed and appreciated. For the past consecutive years the company was awarded the title of “Przedsiębiorstwo Fair Play” (lit. Fair Play Company). In 2005 it won the first prize in the competition, thus proving that it is a trustworthy business partner. Another noteworthy distinction was “Laur Białego Tygrysa” (lit. White Tiger Laurels). It is granted to outstanding people, businesses, producers, investors and distributors from the power engineering industry for the implementation of innovative products or solutions related to the organization of work, marketing or customer service. The enterprise was awarded with the title two times: in 2006 for design and implementation of modern flame-powder spraying technology with penetration of boiler pipes, and in 2008 for implementation of an environmentally-friendly solution – the washing station for over-oiled elements. On the other hand, social and cultural activity is an inherent part of a non-business activity of Eltur-Serwis. The company is sensitive to the needs of the local society, therefore it gets involved in charity campaigns and promotes culture and health. By supporting local health care centres, schools and local sports events, the enterprise also contributes to organization of many local events.

The high quality of the company’s products and services is confirmed by numerous certificates. In 2003, Eltur-Serwis implemented the Integrated Management System conforming to the standards: PN-EN ISO 9001:2001, PN -EN ISO 14001:2005, PN-N-18001:2004, PN-EN ISO 3834:2-2007, which allowed the firm to render services at the top level. The following certificates awarded by Urząd Dozoru Technicznego - CERT (Office of Technical Inspection – Certification Body), with its registered office in Warsaw, include an attestation that the Company acts in compliance with the requirements of the above-mentioned standards: Certificate No CSJSB/062/2006 confirming the compliance of the Integrated Management System with the requirements of PN-EN ISO 9001:2001, PN-EN ISO 14001:2005, PN-N-18001:2004, Quality System Certificate confirming its compliance with the requirements of PN-EN ISO 3834:2-

2007. The company has also the Quality System in the Destructive and Nondestructive Testing Laboratory conforming to PN-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005.

Quality policy

The quality policy which was adopted when the business started developing is conscientiously followed at every stage of production, repair and any other service that the company provides. In this trade it is essential to have all indispensable permits and documents in order to offer complex specialist services.

THE GREAT ENERGY AND THE SPEED OF LIGHT Written by Agata Nowak

Company’s history with its crucial moments

Zakład Wykonawstwa Sieci Elektrycznych in Rzeszów (South-East part of Poland) was officially established, as an independent unit the 1st July, 1976. Since then, the enterprise has marked an impressive development, including number of notable realizations – electric

power buildings and other establishments of high, medium and low voltage, telecommunication grids and fiber optic tracks – which more than once had to be elevated and installed in really hard field conditions. Currently, thanks to the great devotions of its managers and common employees, ZWSE still increases its potential, but in the same time, after more than 30 years of its activity it can be proud of occupying the leading position in a branch. However this positive situation did not just happen over nightly. As all such successes, this time it was also a process, and a long road stuffed with hard decisions. Briefly speaking, as a result of great economical and political national changes after 1989, the company bravely entered newly born free market. Those were really controversial days for Polish business as wholeness, thus each decision made, each move has been totally new and could effect in a completely unexpected way. Fortunately, dynamical campaign, aiming at the maintenance on a fresh and unstable market, had finished with a complete triumph, owing to the creative thinking of ZWSE’s Board of Presidents. After spectacular survival the company decided to present a new, up-dated image and an innovated offer. In 1995 ZWSE invested in some new equipment. The company, by its own means, bought devices designed for optical fiber installation and implemented this additional activity in its offer. After an intensive personnel

trainings, conducted in Germany, Japan, and United States, the plant has become one of the few indigenous enterprises, which are occupied with this technically advanced constructional field. The year 1999 was crucial for ZWSE, because it was that moment, when the plant was finally privatize and become a public limited company. Where exactly ZWSE singles out its success and good repute among customers and investors? Basically, the professional attitude, highly educated work team and proper equipment representing world’s standards seem to be the fundamental factors, by which it gained a common trust and respect. ZWSE’s representatives claim that the customer’s satisfaction is a key to every operation and action taken up. All clients are equally important, so ZWSE cares for devoting them an equal interest and commitment. The strategic potential thus is being constituted by the working stuff and their great cooperation skills. What is more, the present

position on a market is a direct result of a courage characteristic for the per-

sons at the helms of the company, who do not hesitate over the investments regarding modern technologies and over the widening of services offered.

ZWSE as an employer

Currently the company employs almost 270 persons. Thanks to their abilities it is possible to operate not only in Poland, but also widely abroad. All of them work for the common well-being and success of ZWSE. The management, informally speaking, stakes on youth and high education. The company believes that this is a good investment in a future, and also a great opportunity for the young talents to evolve. In regard of this noble philosophy, ZWSE collaborates with universities, and gives national and foreign students an interesting chance for complete their professional stages and practices. As it was mentioned above, ZWSE’s employers are being trained and tutored also in the bosom of the company itself. The technical development is so enormous nowadays, that companies specializing in such complicated branch simply must have their fingers on a pulse, so to speak. That is why the employers have a possibility to extend their knowledge and deepen their professional and interpersonal skills during the trainings and courses organized for them abroad – in Germany, United States and even Japan.

for millions of zlotys, so it even got an inside branch nick-name “The contract of a century”. The signing of an agreement constituted a history meaning for the whole company and now after its splendid realization ZWSE is a real “catch” for new investors. From the quality management point of view ZWSE fulfills all the necessary requirements and demanded norms. The Company has begun the Quality Management System introducing works in 1998 according to PN-ISO 9001:1996 standard. In 1999 The Company had granted ISO 9001 Certificate. Moreover, ZWSE Management is well aware of the fact, that the plant has a noticeable impact on the natural environment. The company admits that there is a certain number of postproduction wastes and air pollutants involved. By these reasons the steps were taken to provide unnecessary environment degradation. In 2001 the Company was ISO 14001 certified by TÜV Management Service GmbH in Munich. Environmental management System was introduced according to the PN-EN ISO 14001:1998 standard.

and telecommunications building engineering. Company’s offer includes such operations and constructions as: construction of overhead high voltage (HV) electric power lines up to 400 kV, building of the electric power lines and signaling cable lines up to 30 kV, electric power switchyards and switching stations - overhead and interior in the full of voltage scope up to 400 kV, overhead and cable fibre optic lines building, telecommunications lines building, steel and alluminium structures. It is an impressive range of services, if we take under the consideration the beginnings of ZWSE and its first steps. Even though the assortment is so wide the company does not distinguish more and less im-

portant parts of its activity. Each of activities develops in its own particular rhythm characteristic for the investment intensity. There is only one general goal that ZWSE hopes to accomplish – the company wants to be seen as a modern enterprise, which, by its actions, contributes to the development and to the improvement of the national electric safety. The list of awards and titles according to the ZWSE’s achievements is very long and various. Still, there is one especially worth mentioning. In 1999 the company won a tender announced by Polish Energy Group. The contract considered electric power line up to 400 kV located between Dobrzyń and Wielopole. The whole investment amounted

Today whole world is quite obsessed with the concept of a general crisis. We were wondering what meaning it has for ZWSE Board. Surprisingly, the company representative answered: “Owing to the proper management and long sight of our managing stuff, the changing floats of the International market are hardly noticeable for us”. How it is possible? “This is matter of a modern management, which regards constant development and changes. Standing in one safe position is not an answer in today world”. What can we say more? Such a positive and wise attitude, both simple and effective, is a guarantee of success. The company is really proud of its current position, its professionalism and world standard of services, and frankly, there is a lot to be proud of. ZWSE is a top-notch Polish enterprise in electric branch and it has a lot of achievement waiting ahead.

For Your Connections

O

ne of the major Polish producers in a field of electronics and telecommunication, ZPAS Group has Chairman of the board been recently Mr. Piotr Baranowski celebrating a significant anniversary - thirty five years of its activity. Manufacturing Journal presents company’s history, describes the road of transition to today position on a market, shows its offer, points out its goals and brings closer ZPAS’s mission and philosophy. Written by Agata Nowak

34 Manufacturing-Journal Księga1.indb 36

ZPAS S.A.

ZPAS S.A is a fundamental core of the entire ZPAS Group. Without mentioning its developmental history and profile of activity, we won’t be able to completely understand the philosophy and mission of the whole group. From the establishment in 1973, ZPAS has been engaged in the manufacture of various industry cabinets and enclosures. At first, the company functioned as the Experimental Department of the Power System Automation Institute (IASE) in Wrocław. After a while on a market, it entered into the composition of the Research and Manufacturing Centre for Power System Automation (CNPAE). After 1989, company’s managers had decided to take some actions directed into the privatization process, which completed at the end of 1991. Since then ZPAS is a private

joint-stock enterprise. The 90’s seems to be very profitable for ZPAS. The company was constantly growing, spreading ranges of its activity so far, that finally in 2004, by the strategic decisions of a board, ZPAS “gave birth” to the daughter company, metaphorically speaking. This new structural element, ZPAS-NET, took over a part of the whole production. Owing to that move, company’s manufacturing potential, employment level and sales have been increasing so dynamically, that in 2007 ZPAS S.A. launched a new huge production plant (over 10 thousand square meters) on a ground of Noworudzki Industry Park in Nowa Ryda – Słupiec. This plant is adequately equipped for the mass production, by operating with the Salvagnini automatic line. At the same time the company created in NOWA Ruda a special warehouse

for the finished articles. Currently, ZPAS S.A. is a proud owner of two production plants - in Nowa Ruda – Słupiec, mentioned before, and in Przygórze. The second plant is specially designed for more individual and short-run production. In the same time, Przygórze is a main ZPAS location, and ZPAS Group Board’s office. And what exactly is being produced in ZPAS S.A.? Basically, the variety of cabinets and data communication enclosures (mainly 19” and 21” ones, plus server cabinets, telecommunication cabinets, EMC enclosures and others – both in floor-standing and wall-mounted versions). In the wide assortment of other cabinets we can find among the others: empty power cabinets (without electrical devices) and customized cabinets. The company also offers products made of stainless acid-resistant steel.

ZPAS-NET

As it was underlined above, on the first June of 2004 ZPAS made a structural partition by single out the separate ”daughter” company called ZPAS-NET. This second company was created by isolation of departments operating in the field of network and energetic solutions production. The “NET” part of the company’s name symbolize the offer of products, which are necessary for creating the ideal infrastructure of modern networks and supervision, control systems. There is also another, similarly important range of ZPAS-NET products, which includes the articles designed for the energetic branch using intelligent IT solutions. The company is developing really dynamically. We can find the confirmation of its successes in Nowa Ruda-

Drogosław, where the company has just recently opened the second plant located in the area of Wałbrzyska Special Economic Zone. The official opening took place on 5th October 2007. The space of this new establishment is quite impressive – 800 square meters for the office section and 2 500 sq meters created for the manufacture processes. The ZPAS-NET offer includes structural cabling elements, telecommunications accessories, fibro optic distribution frames, outdoor cabinets, low-voltage cabinets and switchgear with electrical devices, dispatch and control desks, mimic boards. What is innovative and original, ZPAS-NET offers also its own system – ZPAS Control Oversee, which combines several significant functions. Basically, the system proposed by the company supervises climatic conditions in server rooms, data communication and power cabinets, and elements of building and industrial automation.

ZPAS Group

ZPAS Group represents the best values, ideas, general goals and the common philosophy of the two enterprises, briefly described previously. It unites their production offer. The whole idea of this group underlies in the leading motif “solutions for connections”. This phrase appeals to the virtues of offered articles, to the benefits of their usage, to the welldeveloped system of the company-customer communication, to the partnership, technological consulting and to the really high quality of the client services, form the first contact to the realization of order. The positive and opened attitude towards the receivers is one of the most important points in the company’s activity. Best ans(w)er for a sticky wicket

T

wenty years back from now the chemical factory Anser was a Polish budding enterprise in the chemistry construction which brought to the market innovative solutions, high quality of products and competitive prices, thus winning the customer confidence. The business earned a good reputation as a manufacturer of adhesives, paints, varnishes, mortars and other agents. With hindsight, as the firm admits, company’s multidimensional development has come to serve as a general policy which is continued to date. Written by Marcin Zimny

Overview

Established in 1989 and turned into a limited liability company in 2004, Anser has reached the leading position in the field of construction chemistry. It supplies chiefly the construction and furniture industries. With its 15 production plants, most of which are located in Łódź, Poland, and a packaging house, the firm is able to execute even the most demand-

ing and elaborate orders, ensuring secure and effective distribution of products and technical service throughout the country. Company’s extensive offer includes, among other things, special use adhesives for furniture industry, plasters, mortars, heating linings, polyurethane foams, silicones, outside and inside use paints, varnishes, stains, solvents, etc. The company puts customer confidence first among many assets that Anser has. Wholesalers and specialist chains of shops working in the construction such as Castorama, Lapayer, Leroy Merlin, plumped for Anser’s products, but the list of direct recipients includes also other consumers such as furniture plants and construction companies. The company conducts also intensive business activities outside Poland, exporting their products to the markets in Russia, Byelorussia, Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. What is more, high qualifications and experience of the personnel allow it to adapt to market needs, ensuring simultaneously high quality of products, competitive commercial conditions and professional customer service. Thanks to developmental research conducted in a state-of-the-art laboratory the enterprise implements new products, takes advantage of market niches and meets the highest requirements.

Momentous days

Over two decades paved with numerous landmark events the company managed to work up some seniority. For ex-

ample, decisions aiming to revamp the enterprise by opening new branches in Tarnobrzeg (Świętokrzyskie province), Wardyń (Zachodniopomorskie province) and Gdynia (Pomorskie province) as well as implementing the ISO quality management systems significantly contributed to the growth of the business. Furthermore, awards won at numerous international trade fairs and the presence at prestigious exhibition shows went down in the firm’s history as another array of milestones. Among the most important, however, were the decisions concerning the establishment of research laboratories. Seen as a long-term investment, the labs gave the company the green light to success, turning the factory into a fully-fledged construction chemistry provider. If it had not been for studies of new technologies and improvements, the business would be still at a point of departure. Well-thought-out and sensible investment in research, as the company reveals, was a stepping-stone towards the development of the company.

Customarily considerate

Anser supplies its products mainly to the East European markets where customer confidence is most noticeable. The most popular goods among this group of recipients are adhesives for parquet, adhesives for the furniture industry, paints, protective agents and varnishes. The customers were quick to notice the high quality of Anser’s products. Manufactured in accordance with strict quality standards, they have

Manufacturing-Journal 37 2009-08-04 10:39:33

200 workers at the moment, Anser can make an immediate response to even the most demanding and elaborate orders. Good atmosphere at work is created by good relations between the authorities and employees. What is more, the firm does not impose any limitations on employees holding certain job positions. To the contrary, they are encouraged to take advantage of an attractive motivation system which offers a salary paid in direct proportion to the performance. The system allows for a spontaneous selection of the best employees, making them satisfied with own results and effort that they put in the development of the company.

Spinning the market earned the firm the leading position on the domestic market, making it very competitive among other manufacturers. The competitive price, not infrequently being the main factor deciding about the product’s popularity, is the company’s great asset as well. Not to mention the technical department offering the customers an immediate and comprehensive assistance. The company evokes in customers the image of professionalism, high quality and affordable price – a decent achievement, one could say, for a company based solely on the Polish capital and detached from the influence of Western companies trying to dominate the domestic market.

As strong as the people

Thanks to a vast array of clear-cut objectives, the enterprise looks set on constant progress, making every effort to revamp both the service and the product. Anser’s strength indisputably entails adhesive agents. As an expert, the firm neared mastery of manufacturing the agents. The efficient in-house laboratory can prepare any sort of agent tailored to the customer’s needs and requirements. Anser claims that it had not happened yet that the enterprise had not been able to manufacture an adhesive that would be better, or at least analogous, than a product offered by competitors. Apart from advanced technical know-how the company can implement its goals due to the strong determination of every person, hence the success of the factory is owed to all staff. Since Anser is a far cry from heartless businesses, it holds hard work of all people in high esteem. In other words, every employee is treated as a discrete value that builds up and strengthens the company. With its

38 Manufacturing-Journal Księga1.indb 40

All company’s products ranging from adhesives, special use paints to solvents and varnishes are important, yet adhesives and special use paints are given special attention. Among the most popular adhesive agents the enterprise names floor adhesives ANSERCOLL 5-10-15-20 and ANSERCOLL 2k PUR, industrial adhesives perfect for use in furniture, shoe and packaging industries, and fusible and thermofusible adhesives. As far as the paints are concerned, the most popular are water paints, powder paints, coloring paints and emulsions. Other well-marketable products include protective agents for wood and plaster, as well as mortar. The above products are indicative of the company’s business profile as perceived by the customers. Over the recent five years foreign products have become increasingly competitive all over Poland.

Chemicals Industry > Anser 2009-08-04 10:39:35

This tendency, used to the advantage of Western companies aiming to dominate the Polish market, was a blow for many Polish manufacturers. Anser, however, is prepared to face the new challenges. Thanks to the investments made in improving the technology, the quality of the furniture industry adhesives and special use adhesives significantly increased. Fully aware of benefits of being an innovative and technologically advanced enterprise, Anser decided to open another laboratory which was the company’s second in Mazovia, mid-eastern Poland, and fourth in Poland. At the same time the firm does not neglect international co-operation and nurtures well-established relationships with partners abroad. Currently Anser co-operates with Poland’s eastern and southern neighbours, but it also plans to reach West European markets as well as continue to develop the formerly established relationships on overseas markets.

Proud, not prejudiced

The two decades of existence, except for

Chemicals Industry > Anser Księga1.indb 41

allowing the enterprise to develop the strong and secure position, brought many cheerful moments and things that Anser can be proud of today. For instance, it takes pride in its flagship product ANSEROLL 5-10-15-20 which has assumed leadership on the market many years ago and remains unrivalled. The firm can also boast a team of female volleyball players (KS ANSER Siarka Tarnobrzeg), but the greatest satisfaction comes from the fact that for over 20 years the business has been a successful manufacturer of construction chemistry products on the Polish market. For all those years, despite ups and downs of the Polish economy, the company has been strong enough not to get fractured by foreign capital or competitors. The great efforts put in day-today business activities were also noticed, earning the firm a range of prestigious awards. For example, Anser was granted a gold medal for ecological adhesive for parquet at the 46th International Show of Inventions and Innovation (BRUSSELS EUREKA Contest) as well as it was third at the Great Contest of Inventor’s (Wielki Konkurs Wynalazczy) in the field of environmental protection for the solution called ‘Three-functional wood protection preparation DEIMOS.’ Besides, the firm implemented the ISO quality management system which guarantees that the products manufactured by Anser always meet the highest qualitative standards. In short, the company had the chance to prove its value and apparently did. Having emerged as a powerful and big manufacturer, Anser is very much customer-oriented at heart. It cherishes the staff and sound business relationships in everyday practice, ensuring that any efforts are simply geared to great successes from using Anser’s products.

…AND FLOORS FOR ALL

FACT BOX FULL NAME: Posadzki Przemysłowe - Polska Sp. z o.o. PRESIDENT: Kazimierz Mastalski OPERATIONS: Construction Industry ESTABLISHED: 1994

www.ppp-posadzki.com.pl

osadzki Przemysłowe Polska (PPP) is an expert in designing and laying top quality concrete floors, subfloors as well as other kinds of floors and concrete surfaces for access roads and different sites. The company provides, first and foremost, solutions to users looking for the highest quality and durability floors that meet even the most demanding special purpose criteria. With its highly qualified and experienced employees, PPP is capable of taking a wide array of tailor-made orders from investors and general building contractors working on their projects both in Poland and abroad.

P

served in the so-called high storage facilities, where things are stored above the height of 12 metres. In the facilities

of Henkel the storage height is 15 metres. This kind of floor ensures a faultless operation of high reach forklift trucks

General information

The company was established in Kraków, Poland, in 1994. From incipient stages of its activity, it has specialized in the design and laying of various types of industrial concrete floors which are float finished, reinforced with mesh or steel fibers, surface hardened or made as surface layers for other finishing layers. An important milestone occurred in the year 2001 when PPP finished laying a floor that was made in accordance with the British norm TR 34 CAT I. The floor, which had 10, 000 square metres, was laid in warehouses of the chemical plant Henkel located in Racibórz. It was compliant with very strict surface smoothness parameters which had to be ob-

which move along induction wires fitted in the floor. The implementation of the method earned the company a leading position in Poland when it comes to laying this type of floors. It was a successful innovative undertaking confirmed by the British company Monofloor Technology, which conducted a surface smoothness test on site. The achievement was commented on by the president of PPP in the following way: ‘The jointless floor which was laid in accordance with the British norm TR 34 CAT I was a great challenge for us. It required a lot of work and effort from all employees. We are, therefore, very proud of the fact that we managed to become part of a small group of European companies which offer this type of flooring.’ PPP has provided services to numerous companies, investors etc. The floors made by PPP can be seen within Poland, e.g. in Teresin near Warsaw, Sady near Poznań, Piotrków Trybunalski, Bielany Wrocławskie, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Racibórz, Mysłowice, Chorzów, Błonie, Sochaczew, Pakość, Gdańsk as well as abroad, e.g. in Ricany near Praha (The Czech Republic), Krivań (Slovakia), Budapest (Hungary) and Bo-

chum, Herten, Herbrechtingen, Wetzlar and Heilbronn (Germany). Since 1994 the firm has made approximately 3 million square metres of floors in nearly 300 different facilities. The most noteworthy are high tolerance floors that were made in accordance with the British norms TR 034 in Racibórz (10,000m2), Gądki (12,000m2) Bielsko-Biała (5,000m2) and Gdańsk (2,000 m2). The professional approach and high quality were noticed not only by customers. The firm was awarded with several prestigious distinctions in the meantime. In 2001 it was granted European Medal for industrial monolithic floor (compliant with DIN 18202), followed by two more European Medals: in 2002 for jointless floor (compliant with TR34 CAT I) and in 2005 for monolithic industrial floor. The economic development did not come unnoticed too. The business grew steadily on the construction market, expanding the business offer and winning the customer confidence. The growing popularity of services provided by PPP paved the way for the famous Gazele Biznesu (Gazelle of Business) award which the company was honoured with in 2003 and 2004 as well as in 2007 and 2008 respectively. To cut a long story short, the firm’s policy and numerous references and awards seem to be an excellent confirmation that the main objective of PPP is the high quality and reliability.

Offer

The company’s offer is addressed primarily to investors and general building contractors who search for excellence in industrial flooring. The floors are geared towards customers’ special

needs and demands. They are always designed and made in order to meet special criteria for use in industrial buildings such as trade halls, manufacturing houses, storage buildings, loading rooms, parking spaces, petrol stations, access roads, airports and other. The present offer includes: 1. Industrial floors reinforced with mesh or steel fibres; 2. Industrial floors with hardened surfaces and cut expansion joints; 3. Industrial floors with hardened surfaces without cut expansion joints, so-called jointless floors; 4. Industrial floors with surfaces hardened using the ‘wet-on-wet’ technique (hardening of surface 8-15 mm thick) or made on an adhesive layer; 5. Industrial floors in different colours; 6. Industrial floors with high performance tolerance (compliant with TR34 or DIN 15185); 7. Concrete surfaces of squares and access roads; 8. Concrete subfloors for tiles, carpets, epoxy or polyurethane floors; The floors are usually made in accordance with DIN 18202. In special cases PPP offers also enhanced performance industrial floors which are made in accordance with TR34 or DIN 15185. Hiring PPP, as the company assures, equals the reliable service and high quality.

Manufacturing-Journal 41 2009-08-04 10:39:43

Technology

Nowadays, the company can speak of success. It did not come overnight, though. As the authorities of PPP admit, the success was achieved chiefly due to the implementation of many advanced technologies that are used for laying the floors. The most important technologies are those used for jointless floors and enhanced performance floors, i.e. • •

• •

• •

technology for securing edges of day fields of floors with specialists PERMABAN expansion profiles; technology for dosing steel fibres using an integration machine blowing in fibres directly to the concrete vehicle; technology for laying concrete on very large fields during one day – up to 3000 m2; technology of laying and floating of concrete in a manner allowing for the achievement of high surface precision in line with TR 034 or DIN 15185; technology for strengthening the top surfaces in areas of high traffic intensity; technology of ‘wet-on-wet’ hardening, namely laying hard 8-15 mm thick jointless floor.

Each and every floor has a different purpose. Therefore, PPP is always willing to offer professional advice when the customer needs to choose a type of floor. The company can boast its own quality assurance system that was developed specifically to ensure that industrial floors are purpose-made and draw upon the best possible methods and products. On the whole, a project starts with drawing floor plans that match its intended use as well as requirements and demands of an investor, building contractor or architect. The plan is subsequently consulted with the customer before it can be approved. Then, an appropriate concrete mixture is selected in the concrete provider’s laboratory. Experts, who work together in a team supervised by a site manager, lay the floor both during the day and at night. Concrete works need to be performed quickly and carefully, so workers must have not only special skills and abilities, but they also have to be able to co-operate with other members. Only then can such a group work as one unit. Moreover, the site manager is at the customer’s disposal, so any changes and alterations can be

42 Manufacturing-Journal Księga1.indb 44

effected during implementation. The floors are made using Laser Screed machines. They allow one team to lay up to 3000 square metres of concrete floor in a day. The floor made using the monolithic method is finished in one technological operation after concrete has been laid. Obsolete methods, by way of comparison, required the concrete to be laid in layers. The monolithic method is, therefore, very fast and effective. A hardener (e.g. Qualidur, Neodur, Panbex) can be applied on fresh concrete to create a layer which is highly resistant to abrasion.

Quality assurance

The high quality of services offered by PPP is a matter of combining several qualities. On the one hand, the company has fifteen years of experience in providing flooring solutions. During this period it developed advanced technolo-

gies and methods. It has cutting-edge machines and equipment for laying, leveling and finishing concrete, including Laser Screed machines for concrete laying, as well as machines for concrete floating, and equipment used for application hardener. On the other hand, the top quality is ensured owing to highly qualified employees whose experience and reliability is frequently noticed by customers. And last but not least, the quality of products used for laying floors is a very important factor, therefore PPP uses only reliable suppliers that fill the ranks of the leading Polish and foreign manufacturers. All products used for investment delivery feature relevant quality certificates, technical approvals, hygienic and steelworks attestations.

STAY COOL WITH TRANE SOLUTIONS Fifteen years in retrospect

T

Managing Director Mr Paweł Markiton

rane, a member of the Ingersoll Rand capital group, is a global provider of comfort systems and integrated heating, ventilation, airconditioning (HVAC) solutions. Apart from manufacturing spare parts for efficient air conditioning and ventilation systems, the company offers a wide array of services related to HVAC solutions, including, but not limited to, professional customer service, air-conditioning control systems for buildings and tailor-made technical solutions meeting specific requirements and demands of institutional, industrial and corporate customers. An extensive experience and professional approach earned the business a good reputation worldwide as a reliable and unrivalled market player in the trade. Today, the brand enjoys international acclaim and is highly valued by investors, developers, building owners as well as office managers and directors.

Established in 1993, Trane celebrated its 15th anniversary in Poland last year. As Paweł Markiton, who is Trane’s general manager for Poland, Belarus, Ukraine and the Baltic States, reveals, the company started business employing only two people and nowadays it can boast a considerable number of highly trained engineers, experts and technicians. In the 1990s the firm saw a rapid growth that was in parallel with the development of Polish economic market. Nowadays, Trane is regarded as the domestic leader in HVAC solutions. “Our systems are installed in the most popular buildings around the world,” says Paweł Markiton. “Burj Tower in Dubai, Petronas Tower in Malaysia, the Moscow Kremlin and Milan’s LaScala – these are only a few examples. We’re proud to say that we have similar situation here, in Poland…,” he adds. The popularity of Trane solutions in Poland have arguably added luster to functionality and comfort of many Poland-based landmarks. The systems were implemented in such well known buildings as the Warsaw Blue Tower, Golden Terraces – one of the most modern shopping centres in Europe, Warsaw Marriott Hotel and many other office and hotel buildings. For example, the system has been working for over ten years in Warsaw Financial Center, the second building outside the US which has been award-

HVAC Industry > Trane Księga1.indb 45

ed with Energy Efficiency Award. Thanks to effective management and regular maintenance, the system helped to save nearly six million kilowatt-hours of electrical energy during the period of ten years. That quantity is enough to supply the electricity for the city of 11 thousand inhabitants for one year. “Today everyone speaks about saving the energy. In practice, however, only some people save it. The Warsaw Financial Center is the best example showing that the use of new technologies not only lets us obtain rational savings in time, but also contributes to the environmental protection,” says Mr Markiton. Last year in June the firm became a subsidiary of Ingersoll Rand, a global industrial business providing products, services and solutions geared to enhance the quality and control of air in buildings, protect and transport food and perishables, indemnify homes and commercial buildings and enhance productivity and efficiency. Being part of the Ingersoll Rand group gives Trane a unique opportunity to offer new products and services which will diversify the present offer. Today, with its thirty-five manufacturing plants in ten countries, Trane employs more than 29,000 people worldwide. Warsaw Office serves as headquarters of Trane for Poland,

Manufacturing-Journal 43 2009-08-04 10:39:48

top-quality products and highly trained technicians, Trane is prepared to accept even the most challenging tasks. Since green issues have been close to Trane’s business policy as well, the installations, besides being of the best quality, are specially designed to lower energy consumption and reduce the effects of global warming. In May 2007 Trane became a partner of the Clinton Climate Initiative – an organization committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in forty of the world’s largest and most progressive cities, including Warsaw. It has become commonplace in the company to promote the environment protection by showing people how to use HVAC systems in the most effective and environmentally-friendly way. Willing to share cost-cutting and energy-saving knowledge with others, the enterprise launched a series of lectures addressed to building owners, managers and investors during which various HVAC-related issues are discussed. To take the initiative further, Trane is soon going to bring a similar training programme to students of the Warsaw University of Technology.

Strengths

Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic States. Regional showrooms are located in Poznań, Kraków, Gdynia and Wrocław. As Mr Markiton admits, “it was very successful 15 years in Poland. We earned the status of a reliable partner for many businesses across the country. But we do not look back in time too often. Now it is time to build Trane’s future. And the future seems to be very challenging for all of us.”

International experience is definitely an asset. If, for instance, a system must be fitted in a concert hall, Trane draws upon technical solutions developed for a similar purpose in other cities or countries. The concert hall is a specific type of building where standard solutions cannot be applied. A similar case is with mines, printing houses, tobacco plants etc. Therefore, each of such undertakings requires a customized approach that was developed by Trane, thus helping it to put in competitive tenders for contracts. For in-

stance, in several years Poland and Ukraine will host Euro 2012, so hundreds of new hotels need to be built. The buildings will require installation of air-conditioning systems. As Trane reveals, such investments, in order to provide comfort and efficiency, will also require joint efforts from designers and developers. Installation of air-conditioning systems in hotels is one of the company’s strongest points. And the offer is not limited to big top-of-the-range hotels, but two- or three-star hotels benefit equally from power-saving and cost-cutting HVAC solutions. Air-conditioning in offices is yet another strong point. For office spaces Trane provides standard solutions which are distinctive because of their reliability and powersaving properties. Nowadays most offices are located in large buildings and this makes Trane especially privileged owing to extensive experience in fitting systems in such places. In large buildings an engine room is an essential component (e.g. in the building of Warsaw Financial Center or TP SA in Warsaw). It consumes 50 percent of energy, but if the engine room is built using energy-saving methods, the maintenance costs are lowered.

A predictive maintenance

manifesto

Many companies were taken by surprise in the fourth quarter of 2008 when fuel prices actually fell below projections, and they were left with extra money in their energy budgets. The old adage regarding budgets still seems to stand at many organizations – if you don’t spend

Go green!

Trane Polska has a comprehensive offer for industrial buildings too. Many wellknown brands, including Philip Morris Polska, Wrigley de Ferrero, plumped for the company’s state-of-the-art systems which were installed at myriad manufacturing plants across the country. Since the enterprise frequently provides services to demanding customers, the quality of each service has to be impeccable. What is more, according to Mr Markiton, with more than a hundred years of worldwide experience,

44 Manufacturing-Journal Księga1.indb 46

HVAC Industry > Trane 2009-08-04 10:39:50

it, you lose it in next year’s budget. Now, it is not to advocate unwise or fruitless expenditures just to sustain future budget levels, but it is certainly appropriate and within the fiduciary responsibilities of a building owner or manager to invest in a building’s increasing energy effectiveness and value going forward. That windfall of energy money you save and reinvest in your systems now can help you deliver greater energy savings to your organization in the coming years. Purchasing and operating modern, energy efficient and properly maintained HVAC system represents a significant investment over the life of a facility. Deferring maintenance always results in reduced system performance and shortened life cycle. Predictive maintenance means not only improved energy and operating efficiency, but also lower energy bills, which, in many cases may be reduced by 20%. Welldesigned predictive maintenance programme will save energy and money as well as it will enhance the operating efficiency and extend the usable life of HVAC systems. Predictive maintenance uses diagnostic testing and technology to anticipate potential problems and apply proactive remedial measures to avert failure or diminished performance. Facility managers should work with skilled technicians to assess equipment health, maintain spare parts inventories and perform routine inspections so they know when to replace or repair worn parts before trouble might occur. Scheduled system analysis and maintenance can also help identify and reduce typical seasonal strains on HVAC systems. Indoor air quality is affected by constantly

shifting factors, including outdoor temperatures. As a result, HVAC systems are forced to accommodate fluctuating seasonal demands on a building. Predictive maintenance on an HVAC system can identify any areas of a system that are being strained by constant use or any inconsistent factors, while saving both time and money and extending the life of a system. Many companies view Predictive Maintenance as a pivotal element of safe, efficient and uninterrupted work of the HVAC systems installed at their facilities, e.g. Gilette manufacturing plant in Łódź (the largest worldwide manufacturer of disposable razors), Wrigley plant in Wroclaw, Philip Morris manufacturing plant in Czyżyny near Kraków, 3M facility in Wrocław, Warsaw Financial Center and many others. When planning new projects or preparing for renovations, it is important to consider more than just the cost of purchase or installation. The blueprint should go beyond recommendations of products and services. What is essential is to find a partner who offers a comprehensive approach, including developing products, software tools and services supporting a building project. There is no such thing as one ideal system that is the best for all buildings and projects. There are a lot of ways to save energy on the HVAC of a building. At incipient stages of the design, the questions to be addressed are those about the purpose of and needs of the building. Only then can the right people start thinking about a tailored made system suitable for a given purpose. Everyone can step onto the path of Energy Efficiency – the Right Way to Save.

CGH INTERNATIONAL S.A.

A

Poland-based company with multinational origins, CGH International is a renowned manufacturer of tanks, container stations and steel constructions. It assumed leadership on the domestic market, winning the confidence of big concerns. Professionalism, advanced technology, high quality and good management are the company’s major hallmarks which helped the firm pave its way for success and guaranteed a strong and safe position as a reliable business establishment.

Business profile in close-up

Founded in 1997 in Bydgoszcz, the north of Poland, CGH International came into existence as a result of a long-standing cooperation between partner companies in Poland, Germany, Belgium and Holland. Working hand in hand with foreign partners – CGH Fuel & Tank Components NV, TCI Environment NV and CGH Nordic – the establishment belongs to CGH Group Ltd having its registered seat in the United Kingdom. Thanks to the knowledge and experience of Polish and West European engineers, the company implemented a double-skinned tank for storing of inflammable liquid materials. The combination of double-skinned steel and external coating of highly dense endoprene as well as high resistance to damage contributed to the fact that the company offers a 20-year guarantee for the product. Besides, wellqualified and helpful personnel ensure that the customer’s needs are always met and that every business partner is satisfied

with co-operation. This kind of assurance is confirmed by the growing interest in tanks manufactured by CGH International. Nowadays, for example, the company is a long-term provider of tanks for such companies as PKN Orlen, Lotos, Statoil, Shell, Neste, Lukoil and ST1. CGH offers a wide variety of tanks: single-skinned, double-skinned, pressure, non-pressure, aboveground, underground, horizontal, vertical, isothermal and special purpose. The company’s offer includes not only tanks, though. Other manufactures are mostly auxiliary elements such as leakage monitoring equipment, ferro-concrete covers, valves, fuel dispensers, hydrophore units and many others. Container mobile fuel stations, available from a range of five basic options of different capacity each, are manufactured, too. What is more, the company developed its range of manufactures to incorporate the production of railway car tanks which led to co-operation with numerous domestic and international companies specializing in railway logistics. If this does not sound convincing enough, there is yet another crucial area in which the company has gained ground. It is the production and assembly of steel structures for industry and construction purposes. The best quality and structural strength are achieved chiefly by the selection of top-quality materials and protective coating that guarantees the durability of the construction. CGH builds all types of structures ranging from those involving rolled sections, plate girders and latticework to steel space constructions. The highest quality

of structures is ensured by welding (semiautomatic, automatic and flux welding), cleaning the surface by shot blasting and using anti-corrosive protection tailored to the customer’s requirements (painted or hot galvanized). The company’s technical and technological resources, devices for thermal cutting, bending and straightening, machine tools for mechanical treatment, welding machines, devices for the preparation of anti-corrosive surfaces and painting cab make it possible to build almost all types of constructions regardless of the weight and dimensions. Additionally, CGH can boast its own 22m long shotblasting house and painting house. The automated production process and the protection against leakage guarantees that all products manufactured by CGH pose no risk to the environment, which makes them classifiable as safe green products.

Technology

The company managed to implement an advanced modern technology which meets all international standards and guarantees a top-quality product. It has many assets, but the greatest ones are: • • • • •

An automated production line of Heinrichglück guaranteeing perfect assembly; Submerged arc welding both on the inside and outside with the use of highest-quality welding materials; Grit-blasting to Sa 2.5 in line with ISO 8501-1; Automatic coating with an insulation layer of Endoprene ; Tests of welded joints and the outer layer with the voltage of 14kV.

In addition to this, CGH implemented a wide variety of testing procedures such as visual testing in line with PN-EN 970 standard, pressure testing of the internal tank (attended by an inspector of the Technical Inspection Office), pressure testing of the external tank (attended by an inspector of the Technical Inspection Office), magnetic particle testing of external skin (sampling) and x-ray testing of internal skin (sampling). Those practices are applied on regular basis in order to ensure the safety and high quality of the products.

Tank structure

For the manufacture of tanks the company uses materials compliant with S 235 JR G2, grade in line with EN 10025, holding acceptance certificate 3.1 B in

48 Manufacturing-Journal Księga1.indb 50

line with EN 10204 standard. A tank is manufactured on the basis of design documentation, and, subsequently, verified and approved by the Technical Inspection Office, a policy in line with EN 12285 standard and standards of DIN 6600 ff series. Furthermore, tanks meet the requirements set forth by the directives issued by the Polish Minister of Economy dated 18 Sep 2001 (Journal of Laws No.113, item 1211) and 20 Sep 2000 (Journal of Laws No.98, item 1067). The tank is cylindrical in shape, horizontal, single- or double-skinned, and single- or multi-chamber, diameter of 1000 mm – 2900 mm, closed with dish ends – non-pressure tank. Upon the customer’s request CGH adapts the tanks to either “wet” tightness control system by filling the interstitial space with liquid and measuring its level with Afriso LAG 14 ER apparatus or “dry” tightness control system consisting in generation and maintenance of overpressure or negative pressure inside the interstitial space or introduction of hydrocarbon and water sensors into that space, connected to a central unit which triggers alarm in the case of leakage. What is more, all tanks were given an official approval by the Polish Central Office of Measures (GUM).

Aboveground and underground tanks

CGH International offers above- and underground tanks designed for storing of inflammable, non-flammable and caustic materials. Both types are available as either single-skinned or double-skinned, yet the choice depends on the expected use of the tank and the customer’s preferences. In accordance with effective regulations, tra-

ditional ground single shell steel tanks require the foundations. However, the tanks manufactured by CGH have fixed steel supports, which means that the foundations may be redundant. The aboveground single-skinned tanks, suitable for storing of environmentally hazardous materials, require an employment of a special steel collector or tight concrete collector. They are used for storing of inflammable and non-inflammable materials qualifying for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd hazard class, e.g. fuel, chemicals, water, etc. In contrast to single-skinned tanks, aboveground doubleskinned tanks meet the requirements for storing of water hazardous materials. The space between external and internal wall is filled with a control liquid, which protects the tank against corrosion and frost down to -30°C. Normally, as a standard, the company manufactures single chamber tanks, but multi-chamber tanks may be also manufactured at the customer’s request. The tanks are primed with special oil from inside. Additionally, they may also be gritblasted and painted with top coat. Underground double-skinned tanks, by contrast, meet all requirements necessary to store liquids hazardous for underground water. Two solid and flexible steel jackets, insulated with a polyurethane coat from the outside, constitute, together with interstitial space control system, a firm and ecological solution for fuel storing issues. Moreover, the company’s industrial series production is regularly supervised by the Technical Inspection Office, which guarantees that each tank fulfils technical requirements. Underground storing entails safety and space saving. An additional advantage of this type of storing is the use of tank of capacity of up to 100.000 litres. Those looking for LPG tanks should find the company’s offer equally enticing. Underground LPG tanks manufactured by CGH satisfy the safety requirements of propane and butane storage. The firm is a holder of valid permits, issued by a competent certifying body, to manufacture such types of tanks. They comply with CE marking, which means that they can be used within the European Union. LPG tanks are made of carbon steel and equipped with a manhole covered by a lid with fittings.

suction pipe for sucking fuel from the tank; drain pipe for pumping water out from the bottom of the tank; sounding pipe allowing measurement of fuel level in the tank by means of a measuring rod; automatic measurement stub (for measuring probe); vent stub (with installed valve protecting against product mixing); reserve connector pipe; vapour return stub pipe VRS.

Go Europe!

As a manufacturer, CGH International is a reliable company which holds all professional requirements and practices in high esteem. As a representative of the business community, it is a very attractive partner. Since the company develops rapidly, it is interested in establishing cooperation with firms having experience in the installation of tanks in Europe. Entities willing to become agents or dealers by promoting/selling the company’s products on foreign markets are most welcome, too. For the building companies which specialize in hall construction CGH has made an offer for steel structure projects. Currently, the company started an expansion plan for foreign markets and it believes that people in Europe will put their trust in CGH as Poles did.

Solving logistics problem

W

ith 45 years of experience behind it, Stokota company has truly become an international producer of industrial vehicles and logistics solutions. Agnieszka Rutkowska uncovers the story behind the company’s success. Founded in 1963, the Stokota group is one of the leading manufacturers that specializes in production of welded storage tanks, road tankers, superstructures, trailers and semi-trailers for the transportation of very heavy loads. At the beginning of the 1990s, Stokota started selling its products outside the Belgian domestic market. It was one of the turning points in the company’s eventful history. A further step in widening Stokota’s range was taken with the start of production in Poland. In 1996 a branch was founded in Kielce and this was extended by a second production unit in Elbląg in 2001.

“Think Global, Act Local”

Stokota stresses that each customer and its needs is equally important and deserves the same level of service. But, the firm is aware of the fact that the process of building trust and loyalty among the customers could take years. However, it managed to achieve it. How? First of all, it adopted a flexible approach. This means that Stokota, as a manufacturer, offers a product that always meets customers’ expectations. By providing solutions on the international market Stokota responds to the needs of diverse customer and offers products which comply with technical requirements of the local markets. It is not without reason that one of the company’s motto goes: “Think Global, Act Local.” Customers who cooperate with Stokota for many years confirm that it is a reliable and solid supplier.

Stokota’s potential

The strategic potential of the company is its employees. The core of the company is the staff working for Stokota for more than a dozen years. Nowadays, Stokota hires approximately 500 people. The company is not only based on its employees’ experience, but also on the potential of young people. The manufacturer knows that the company’s development depends on those people. The personnel management is looking for young workers who, willing to learn from the experienced staff, become highly valued as employees. As an example, we can cite the fact that recruitment is carried out with a view to selecting the most prominent postgraduates students as well as vocational school students by offering them a trial period in the company. The best candidates are offered regular posts.

Spreading offer

The company’s business activity is rooted in the production of tanks which made Stokota known not only in Europe, but also on others continents. Undoubtedly, this is the company’s most important product. The tanks are automatic welded and accurately tested: radiographic checks on the welded joints, pressure tests, capacity measurement, safe loading tests, and brake tests. However, from the very beginning the Stokota group has been expanding its offer consistently. An important and essential product is semi-trailers for the transport of large and indivisible loads. The company’s low-bed and flat-bed semi-trailers are single to triple extendi-

ble, with a total maximum length of 36 meters and a loading capacity of up to 100 tons, thus especially suitable for the transportation of very heavy loads like crane parts and ballast elements and for the transportation of building equipment and vehicles. These two branches of production are supplemented by the manufacture of “green” vehicles which serve best for any works involving the disposal of liquid waste. The company also offers a wide range of waste transport vehicles in the sector of industrial and general cleaning. Moreover, it manufactures bitumen semitrailers for the transport of asphalt, crude oil or other products that must be kept hot during transportation. The semi-trailers are pressure thermally insulated so that the contents of the tank will stay hot and liquid while being transported to the place of destination. Another product in this group is the aircraft refueller. It also offers water tanks for the transport of drinkable water or water for irrigation. The tanks superstructures have a capacity of between 15.000 and 25.000 liters. They can be used for transport and for irrigation of certain areas. For this, the water can be discharged on the top of the tank. Stokota has vehicles that solve any logistics problem. It is worth to mention that after the delivery of product customers can count on the company for total service: servicing of tank vehicle, calibration of measuring instruments, and tests of vehicles. Stokota’s sales and engineering team always accompanies its customers with its professional support and advice. Despite the diversity of products offered by Stokota company, they all have something in common: an appropriate level of quality.

Europe, Africa, Asia

As a Belgian company with its production facilities in Poland, Stokota has a wellestablished position on the markets of the Benelux countries as well as in Poland. In recent years it has developed sale in France, Germany and Scandinavia. Operations has also allowed the company to conquer Eastern European markets. Moreover, Stokota is present in the markets of Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania and Czech Republic. Its vehicles can be also seen traveling across Africa and Asia.

Market trends

The Stokota’s staff admits that in recent years the company has been developed rapidly. The employment grew and new investments were made. It helped the com-

improvement of efficiency in delivering transportation services. In order to achieve this goal, Stokota offers customers semi-trailers that let them optimize the costs. It is connected with higher quality of products and with a extending the period between MOT vehicle inspections. An extremely important element on which the company’s customers now pay attention is the weight of the vehicles. The use of 3D design and Finite Elements Analysis allow the company to build light constructions without losing quality or safety levels. The development of Stokota’s products is geared towards the reduction of weight and the increase in capacity. An extremely important part in the transportation and distribution of liquid fuels is the so called tank measurement procedure. The company uses the latest solutions ranging from the traditional systems of measurement to the electronic system of strips using GPS and GSM technology to monitor the quantity of injected fuel. pany increase its production. Like every modern company, Stokota wants to follow the most recent market trends. It has been constantly working to develop the products, improve the existing ones and introduce new types of vehicles. Obviously, the increase in production entails a commercial expansion which focuses on the acquisition of new markets. A common trend in the transport business is the

Environmental awareness

As mentioned before, Stokota’s engineering department focuses on the development and manufacture of environmentally-friendly vehicles. The company’s staff cannot imagine that while manufacturing these types of vehicles they would not pay attention to the protection of the environment. The company constantly tries to intensify its operations and minimize their impact on the environment.

Business strategy

Stokota’s journey started 45 years ago. It’s a journey that has taken it all over the world and it looks set to continue to do so. Stokota wants to be a world-wide industrial company in well-chosen market segments where a sustainable profitable growth can be obtained. For those market segments, Stokota brings under its own brand end products to the market and delivers service to its customers – this is the strategy that the company follows. Stokota does not focus on prizes or distinctions. It says that the most significant award it has ever received is … customer satisfaction. According to the company, in a competitive marketplace where businesses compete for clients, customer satisfaction is seen as another key element of its business strategy.

Ploughing back into the polish agricultural business

U

nia Group is a renowned Polandbased provider of agricultural machinery produced by Unia Grudziądz, Kraj Kutno, Agromet Brzeg, Pilmet Brzeg and Famarol Słupsk. It uses one of the most revolutionary and impactful applications of modern technology. The truly elemental human need for food has often driven the development of technology and machines. Over the last decades, advances in farm equipment have transformed the way people are employed and produce their food worldwide. The fast development, high quality of machines and customer confidence earned the company a good reputation as a reliable business partner. At present, it is prepared to face new challenges and respond to the demands created by the growing agricultural market.

History paved with takeovers

The origins of the business trace back to the mid-1990s when Andrzej Guzowski, the present managing director

and co-owner, set up the private limited liability company Unia Grudziądz in December 1995. Initially, the enterprise leased and soon after took over the assets of Unia Ventzki, a company which was established in 1882. After the World War II Unia Ventzki was nationalised and, following the period of transformation of Polish business entities at the beginning of the 1990s, it declared bankruptcy, which allowed for restructuring of the enterprise. First and foremost, Unia Grudziądz is the provider of agricultural machinery which is used in the process of soil cultivation. Since the company’s business activities were closely linked to sowing, it bought its way into Kraj (Rolmasz), the leading Polish producer of seeders, thus becoming its shareholder in 2002. This event marked the beginning of takeover bids undertaken by Unia Grudziądz on the Polish market. It was not long until the firm took over Agromet Brzeg, a manufacturer of fertilizers, in 2004. Two years later two

other companies found itself under Unia Grudziądz’s control: Pilmet, the market leader in the production of sprayers, and Famarol, the producer of hay and silage machinery. In the meantime, the company started the manufacture of potato planters and harvesters based on the licences purchased from a Strzelce Opolskie company which was on the verge of bankruptcy. What is more, the enterprise developed and implemented its own technology for the production of manure spreaders which was subsequently launched in Brzeg. In recent years the company turned over a new leaf by bringing together five producers of agricultural machinery ranging from ploughs, seeders, through spreaders, fertilizers to silage technology. Then, having bought the licence for the production of round balers from DF, the business implemented research and develop-

ment practices with a view to providing a better customer-oriented service. At the moment the production is handled by four companies located in Grudziądz, Słupsk, Kutno and Brzeg. In each of them the enterprise holds between 90 and 100 percent of the shares.

Plough money into the Polish market

Since its accession to the EU, Poland has been emerging as the biggest European agricultural market and one of the biggest worldwide. It is also extremely diversified, as it consists of both big farms and thousands of small farmsteads whose practices need to be revamped. According to Unia Group’s managing director, such a situation creates very favourable conditions for investments. What is more, nowadays the Polish market needs investors more than ever, which also adds luster to the present market conditions. The question that needs to be addressed is therefore how to invest rather than whether invest or not. The issue received a lot of attention from various restructuring programmes supported by the EU and funds coming from the Polish state budget. As Mr Guzowski claims, thanks to those programmes as many as 40-50 thousand machines with tractors can be sold annually. There are, however, several essential issues which have a great influence on farmers’ decision making process related to investments. The first is raising awareness of the possibility and advantages of being in a possession of a tractor which has 20-

54 Manufacturing-Journal Księga1.indb 56

30 H P more than the currently owned. The second aspect concerns the need for investment in new technologies which Mr Guzowski compares to “replacing the kinescope TV with the flat screen where the new flat screen is of high technology, more efficient and better equipped.” Farmers are entitled to use extra state funds which they usually allocate for high quality machines and equipment. Last year’s fluctuations of the Polish currency and its recent depreciation against the euro are unquestionably to the detriment of an investment-oriented atmosphere. Apart from the technical problems created by a volatile market and experienced by producers and customers, potential customers are in two minds about such investments. Mr Guzowski, however, takes a firm stand, saying “I do not agree with the statement that a strong zloty attracts producers from the euro zone and a weak zloty is beneficial to the domestic producers. The exchange rate is favourable for all of the participants only when it is stable! Only then earnings and spending of farmers and manufacturers can be calculated using comparable measures.” In other words, a predictable environment is a prerequisite for success.

Current tendencies

In the forthcoming years Poland is not going to become the country of nontill farming, according to Mr Guzowski. Plough will remain the main tool for conventional tillage, yet convertible ploughs are expected to gain ground. It is predicted that sales of convertible ploughs and mounted bed ploughs will be similar in the near future. Given the enormous popularity of 90-100 HP tractor, 3-4 bodies ploughs are expected to become the most marketable products. Since the cultivation presupposes sowing, Polish farmers are rather inclined to buy sowing and cultivation units in lieu of buying two machines separately. Pneumatic seeders will become popular, although they are unlikely to hit the jackpot, so mechanical seeders will maintain its position. “As far as punctual sowers are concerned, this process can go in a different way due to very low prices of corn. Big farms will be looking for solutions to avoid ploughing and this is why, in my opinion, heavy mechanical seeders will be a better choice than pneumatic

ones. Time will show if I am right, says Mr Guzowski. The development of current technologies and the purchase of new, well-equipped machines will minimize the effort and improve the quality of farmers’ work. In the last five years spreaders for mineral fertilizers have become extremely popular. The farmers replaced single-disc spreaders with twodisc ones which came with relatively basic equipment. Many of these machines were brand new, therefore this sector of the market will develop at a slower rate than it used to. However, as Mr Guzowski predicts, the next stage will involve the purchase of two-disc spreaders with electronic controllers and multifunctional spreaders of high volume (5000 and 10000) and high ground clearance which enable to spread lime, mineral fertilizers during the whole process of vegetation. They are also equipped with electronic controllers and GPS analysis systems. In general, the process of fertilizing using organic fertilizers has better prospects than that relying on the use of mineral fertilizers. On the one hand, the market of mineral fertilizers is underdeveloped. On the other hand, the costs of using mineral fertilizers are much higher than those of using organic ones. And finally, the growing importance of green issues and the evolution of cultivation methods indicate that increase in sales of big machinery should be anticipated.

Business offer

During fifteen years of its activity, the company has brought many machines to the Polish market. Since they are designed for different purposes, the machinery is available under several categories: cultivation (i.e. mounted cultivators, mounted reversible ploughs, compact disc cultivators, semi-mounted reversible ploughs, stubble cultivators, subsoilers, heavy disc cultivators, semi-mounted seedbed combination, disc harrows), cultivation and seeding

LEADER IN PRODUCTION OF ENVELOPES

D

espite a clear growth in the number of electronic mail sent for business as well as private purposes every Chairman of the board day, traditional Mr. Waldemar Sobczak correspondence remains an important aspect of our lives. It is connected first and foremost with the dynamic technological development and an ever growing number of advertisements, statements and bills sent to us by various institutions. Due to that, companies specializing in envelopes’ manufacturing can be more than sure that their products will find their buyers. One of the companies is Kuvert Polska, a leader in the Polish envelopes’ market with share amounting to thirty per cent.

Plucky decisions

The history of the company started twenty years ago with indoor production of envelopes, which made Zbąszyń,

a little city in the western part of Poland, to a real “Envelope Basin”. Without doubt, the company would not be where it is at the current moment if it had not been for the plucky decisions undertaken by its owners. Twenty years ago, the nowadays President of the enterprise – Waldemar Sobczak – invested all his savings in the business and started the activity with manual production and execution of insignificant orders. The first machine appeared no sooner than after three years of operations. Funny enough, it turned out that it was bought from one of the nowadays German associates of Kuvert Polska, Ms. Barbara Wessner. The then customers of Kuvert Polska, named at the time Polkopert, would include Polish wholesalers with the largest client being Prószyński i Spółka publishing house, one of the largest institutions of its type in Poland. The fact propelled the company and helped it to develop. Another crucial moment in the history of the company was establishment of Grand Style Poland company and a printing house Zaczarowany Ołówek (Magic Pencil) in 1993. Owing to the changes, the management of the company increased by two persons – Jacek

Paczóski and Artur Misiak. Two years later, in 1995, thanks to an accidental meeting of Jacek Paczóski with Barbara Wessner during trade fairs in Frankfurt/ Main, the company started cooperation with her German enterprise. The company got its nowadays shape and form – on the basis of Grand Style Poland, Kuvert Polska was established and the three Polish associates were accompanied by three German counterparts. The company has been functioning as a Polish-German plant since 13th June 1995 and the shares have been divided in fifty-fifty proportion. In the very same year the first production hall was constructed. During the first phase of business operations, the company invested a lot in the equipment necessary to increase the efficiency of the plant as well as the quality of the products. In fact, the results became visible very quickly – in 2000 the production grew by 200% and sales increased by 300%. All that was achieved with a little more than 162 employees. Further extension and investment decisions took place in 2005. Thanks to significant build-up and modernization of the plant and production lines, the manufacturing process

Manufacturing-Journal 57 2009-08-04 10:40:27

became less energy-intensive and more environmentally friendly. The build-up of the plant included in turn a new storehouse, which allowed to adapt the old one to a production hall with five stateof-the-art production halls operating in it. The investment included as well a modern office and social back-up as well as a fully automatic waste paper collection mechanism. All the improvements caused that at the current moment Kuvert Polska can boast a well functioning works with modern production lines.

Competitive advantage

The factor which differentiates Kuvert Polska from other envelope producers is undoubtedly that the enterprise belongs to Mayer-Kuvert-Network, a Group of 30 enterprises located in 22 different countries. Each of the Group’s members is encouraged to present their experience and best practice to the other companies constituting the circle. The party which gets the most from the know-how exchange is the customer. The reason behind that is that the clients receive a much wider product assortment thanks to a significant extension of the individual companies’ sample spectrum. What is more, thanks to the exchange of technical knowledge, the companies are one step in front of the competitors. It allows them to introduce new products, machines as well as work strategies and optimize the old ones. This is another aspect beneficial to the customers – it is them who take advantage of the new products and new standards delivered by the Group’s members. What is more, at the beginning of 2008 Mayer-Kuvert-Network Group signed a strategic agreement with leading producers from Spain, Japan as well as the United States. The initiative named Global Services Group is responsible for supplying international concerns, which in turn aim at being the central supplier of all global customers. The settlement boasts 65 production units, which allows to service the customers in an optimal way without any greater administrative outlay. The four of the renowned and acknowledged Global Services Group’s companies are to introduce new servicing, quality and assortment rules and determinants. The agreement of the companies is unique on the global scale. Membership in the association allows Kuvert Polska to think about the future in an optimistic way and is one of the areas where the compa-

quite impressive. Next to traditional envelopes, the company has decided to incessantly extend its product offer and make it up to date with the requirements and needs of the customers as well as changes in their lifestyle. Owing to that, the product offer includes: traditional envelopes (wet-adhesive, self-adhesive, with silicon stripe), window and no-window envelopes, nonstandard envelopes (for carnets and occasional postcards), envelopes for automatic packaging, untypical envelopes for direct marketing, envelopes with air and foil protection, Prestige Envelopes with intensive, dark underprinting for confidential correspondence as well as full spectrum of envelope overprint. The company is aware of the great changes that took place in the envelope market within the recent years. A few years ago traditional envelopes, either wet- or self-adhesive, were the main product ordered by the customers. Currently, the manufacturing focus is on envelopes for automatic packaging. The transfer derives from transformations in the needs declared by the clients. The answer of Kuvert Polska to the new requirements is Kuvermatic envelope. Thanks to a special excision of the envelope’s flap, the product series can be used in automatic packaging of correspondence. The envelopes are offered in two types: ASK (side flaps adhesive on the outside) as well as ISK (side flaps adhesive inwards). Next to that, Kuvermatic is an envelope series with corporate or advertising overprint in full printing. The high quality of Kuvermatic envelopes is connected with regular cooperation and contact with the clients. The company is always eager to listen to their remarks or

improvements suggestions. Without listening to their proposals, it would be difficult to maintain the high quality of the product and to meet their requirements. It must be added that the quality of the manufacture is additionally verified by enveloping machines of KERN, BOWE and PITNEY BOWES type. Their inserting efficiency is so large that even the smallest fault in the product’s quality could be a problem for the machine and the whole packaging process. In the production process of Kuvert’s envelopes, the best quality paper is used. Furthermore, fully computerized customers’ servicing and orders’ accomplishment, modern machine park as well as competent personnel guarantee professional attitude towards the customers and delivering them top quality products in line with what they expect and ordered. It is worth mentioning that the quality focus at Kuvert is so large that since the very beginning of the business activity, the company did its best to offer a product meeting the customers’ expectations with respect to quality. In order to live up to those expectations, Kuvert Polska decided to implement quality management system EN ISO 9001:2000. Next to that, the products as well as business ventures of Kuvert Polska have been acknowledged by many certifying bodies and competition organizers. The company has been distinguished with the title of Gazela Biznesu (Business Gazelle) for dynamic development figures as well as many other awards and prizes, e.g. Laur Konsumenta (Consumer’s Laurel), Lider Rynku (Market Leader), Przejrzysta Firma (Transparent Company). It was also the finalist in the competition Quality Forum Quality International in 2007 in the category QI Order.

rather unpopular in Poland, yet in the American or western European markets it has been a common thing for many years. It is connected with the direction in which the marketing market has been developing. Intensive promotional and marketing activities practiced in western countries cause that the dispatch reaches almost every citizen. In Poland BTL marketing is still in its tentative phase. However, some interest has been shown by telecommunications, insurance and financial institutions. In order to reduce their costs, many of them decided to dispose of the whole

dispatching process to specialized mailing companies. Unfortunately, the current economic situation slowed down the marketing ventures of a multitude of companies. However, once the crisis is over, the enterprises will get back to promotion, which will pose a chance for Kuvert Polska as well as other companies operating in the branch. The enterprise is not afraid to search for new possibilities outside of Poland. The goal is to strengthen the position of Kuvert Polska on the European market through expansion of international activity and

cooperation with partners from MayerKuvert-Network as well as other clients. At the current moment, the company is active in German, English, French, Swedish, Czech, Slovakian and Lithuanian market. Conquering of new markets is to be achieved through promotion, high quality, competitive prices as well as wide product spectrum. In order to do that, the company gains new technologies both in envelopes’ manufacturing as well as their reprinting. Lots of potential is also perceived in the cooperation with Mayer-Kuvert-Network and, going further, Global Services Group. However, the greatest strength of the company is its personnel and technological solutions as well as crisis experience gained during the turbulent years of economic transition in Poland. With all that and the support coming from the associates, the company can be very optimistic about how its future will look like.

How to succeed in packaging business? Company’s development and customer’s attainment

The PLAST-BOX company was established over quarter of the century ago, in 1983, as a small, family business. Since the beginning of its activity it has been specializing in the production of plastics. Initially, in its first location in Gałęzinowo (near Słupsk, North Poland) PLAST-BOX was a manufacturer of packaging and other objects of plastic, such as plant pots, heat casings and jewelry for children. Early 90s were strictly combined with the dynamically progressing packaging market in Poland. It was then, when the chemical industry leaders have started to use widely plastic pails for storing their products. Taking that fact under the consideration, PLASTBOX owners had decided to concentrate on the pails production exclusively. That was also a time of location changing. New, growing business had required a bigger place, so the company moved its plant to Karżcino (located also next to Słupsk). This beneficial transformation enabled to increase production powers, and to satisfy growing needs of

customers, both the locals, and the first new ones from abroad – mainly, from the region of ex-Soviet Union. Really fast growth of sales, consequential both to the implementations of new articles, as well as to the gaining of the significant new business partners, brought the company to the necessity of the next removal. In 1998 PLAST-BOX moved to its current plant in Słupsk. Simultaneously to the inside, organizational changes, the company has begun to connect with the West European markets. The foreign conditions inspired some next changes and a great will to develop. In 2004 PLAST-BOX succeeded in its efforts to enter on Warsaw stock-exchange. Following shares emissions indirectly allowed a radical modernization of the machine park. What is more, it allowed to establish in 2005 an

independent “daughter company” PLAST-BOX Ukraine, placed next to Kiev. At the moment, investment group PLAST-BOX successfully attends its national and export customers. The company is proud of the unremitting trust, which was given to it by clients. Gaining that trust was not as easy as it seems though. In the same time, when the company has been finally recognized on a market, the openings of the competitive European plants in Poland were taking place. Those companies, having long traditions, experiences and good financial background from the mother-concerns, had constituted quite a challenge for the young,

fresh company, basing in 100 per cent on the Polish capital. Beyond the comparable quality and prices, PLASTBOX stoke on the services and customer open-door policy. Those two virtues of PLAST-BOX brand has enabled to gain and to keep current clients.

Success and its conditioning in case of PLAST-BOX

The company has been working for it present-day position on a market many years. Each stage of its development was significant for the growth of PLASTBOX’s potential, for the maintenance of its position captured and for the creation of close relations with its partners and customers. The receivers, precisely, constitute the whole importance of company’s activity. All company’s efforts – openness for the client’s requests involving possible problems, quick solutions and flexibility - show company’s devotions for the customers. Of course, for accomplishing such task properly there is a great need of loyal, reliable and professional employees. Adequately selected crew, from those operating production lines, to those involved in direct relations with clients, make up a dominant potential of PLAST-BOX. The company representative underlines that this great success is mainly a result of hard work day after day. Without the human effort and employers-employee impressive policy, PLAST-BOX would have not been in this position right now. Today the company employs 200 persons. It straightforwardly means that the company is one of the best and biggest employers in Słupsk. PLAST-BOX policy contains a global function attitude, which means that the company is treated as one living organism. Each new employee has to pass an obligatory stage in every department, what has in view a better understanding of a plant as wholeness. A principal goal of those actions lays in the creation of a professional team and motivation building. The right system of rewards, bonuses and sometimes punishments, allows encouraging

in to the bigger efforts and more effective work. The atmosphere in a workplace does not rest without a meaning. PLAST-BOX originated from the family enterprise, and even though the company has transformed and grown, it still keeps a spirit of friendly small business. Each member of PLAST-BOX “family” has a right to speak, or even complain and he will be always heard. Additionally, the integration trips and events for whole families, a regular element in company’s calendar, help to build close interpersonal relations and attachment.

Offer and customers

From the company’s point of view it is really hard to distinguish the most important area of interest. Each investment, regardless of kind, - is it referring to the cubic capacity, new shape or modern decoration technique - is always preceded by the profound market research and trends observation. On this basis the company undertakes conversations with clients. There is no action till the PLAST-BOX consultants define the specification of customer’s needs concerning new innovative ideas. That process also contains an examination of problems that clients marked during use of competitive products. This information is particularly important while creating a final look of new product and estimating its applied value. Client’s opinions count the most, because owing to them PLAST-BOX can introduce to the market packaging containing all the attributes needed. All clients are equally important, both the big enterprises as well as individual receivers. Obviously, the company has its priorities in the program of the production tasks, but everything is being planned in details for everyone’s satisfaction. The large companies are especially important in terms of mass production and influence on a market, but their number is limited, so PLAST-BOX has to take real care of its smaller partners, who cocreate the company, in a way, by their devotion, repute and promotional skills.

Recent changes on a market and inside the company

PLAST-BOX has changed radically during the last few years. The company’s Board had decided to exchange almost entire machine park. The production was automated and the company furnished itself with new robots prepared to produce

the articles decorated in the technology IML. The infrastructure of manufacturing was also taken care of properly, by investing in objects, which improved the efficacy and economy of production. Those changes did not only influence the increase of sales on the national market, but also enable to achieve a significant dynamics in export. Polish entrance to the European Union, 5 years ago, seemed as a kind of blessing and a great chance for developing also outside the country. PLAST-BOX bravely entered on the international market, where it found some new inspirations, motivations and where it could improved its skills and potential. New challenges, such as increasing customer’s demands, diver-

sification of solutions, modern trends, caused that the company constantly develops and wants to finds itself among the world leaders. Many achievements prove that PLAST-BOX is ready to concur new field and new territories. Speaking about the international cooperation, it started almost 15 years ago and firstly it concerned only several ex-soviet countries. However, little by little the group of foreign customers had been growing, and now it also contains UE and Asia. PLAST-BOX provides its clients directly with its packaging, or by the international network of distributors. Company’s products can be found on more than 20 different markets and today’s export share in company’s turnover reaches almost 50%. Taking under the consideration the fact that 10 years ago company’s export constituted 20% of sales, current results are quite spectacular.

Ecological and social side

The company is located next to the city center, in the neighborhood of apartment blocks, which obligates a special care for the environment. Even though, in case of such production the negative emission is really insignificant, the company implemented several technological solutions, to prevent the harmful impact. The use of water is limited. All noises, which could disturb the life of people nearby, are minimized. Company’s workers measure regularly all coefficients and observe chemical processes. Environment protection is one of the most important matters for PLASTBOX. As for the quality management, the company operates according to norm ISO 9001:2001. Two years after obtaining this certificate, which is in 2003, PLASTBOX got another one – HACCP. Those certificates have raised significantly company’s reliability in the eyes of customers and direct receivers. The company is very proud of its achievements, but it appreciates the most all signs of esteem and gratitude emanating from the local society. PLAST-BOX very actively engage itself in various social, charitable actions, because it would like to be seen not only as a big employer, but especially as an institution supporting regional social and cultural initiatives, promoting young talents and sportsmen. Those actions are being seen and appreciated.

ught into effect unless some restrictions are provided. many quality certificates and operates according to European standards. It has ISO 9000 and this year it got on the list of “Gazele Biznesu”, which is an exclusive trade ranking prepared by reputable and advisory daily paper “Puls Biznesu”.

Being a good employer

a guarantee of success

At the moment Okna Rąbień employs about 650 persons. According to its dynamic progress and in spite of over-all breakdown of macroeconomic situation, the company is still looking for new qualified employees. This year’s change of the owner opened new traces of progress and possibility for stuff to get better employment conditions. Applicants should be professionals who present a good standard and conscientious attitude – such people can expect additional gratifications. Okna Rąbień uses a so-called balanced-progress policy. It means that each person is treated equally regardless of the fact that it may be a foreigner or disable person. The company fights with all unjust stereotypes, for example it employs female workers in a production department. The company is still adjusting its manufactures to disabled persons’ requirements. All employees get payment adequately to the effects of their labor.

Ecological approach

Being environment-friendly is an important task every modern company has to take up, because its activity can affect natural eco-system. In Poland pro-ecological policy is still new and Poles still have to learn a lot as a member of European Union which concentrates on protecting environment to a great extent. To be environment-friendly Okna Rąbień uses balanced-progress policy. Both stale and PCV trashes are recycled. Foil, cardboard waste, printer toners are processed in the same way. As a result, the company protects environment and is more efficient – annually a lot of tons of trashes are put to again processing.

The Past and the future

Okna Rąbień is a successful company thanks to its good organization and efficient management. It was able to predict tendencies on the market and invest large sums of money into production potential in well-considered way; meet clients’ requirements and successfully realize orders. It has a well-functioning trade and sale department; and its representatives are in direct contact with all customers which enable the company to live up to the standards they pre-

sent. The over-all economic breakdown did not influence on activity of Okna Rąbień. Novadays, the market turned out to need its products much more. For a few years the productions has got bigger and bigger. Such a situation required fresh policies, strong attitude, more investments and broadening trade net to new fields of the market. The company established a quality revolution, putting many innovative ideas into effort and preparing to realize many new projects which make the company be able to meet future requirements and needs of clients. The sale of the products do not tend to fall down which proves the offer of good quality and reasonable prices of Okna Rąbień seems to be an competitive solution in such economically risky times. The company is ready to meet new tendencies on the Polish and foreign markets, believing in their big and developing potentials. It is planning to start new investments by launching a machine park, a production hall and wood joinery. Besides cooperation with such countries and regions as Austria, Germany, Scandinavia, in the future the company is concentrating mainly on consolidating its position on Czech, Slovakian and Hungarian markets and planning to be active also in Italy and Benelux.

WITNESS THE POWER OF THE BEST HYDROMASSAGE

A

Polish company Poolspa, which is a member of the Roca group, is a leader on the European hydromassage market and the founding father of the ideas of spa and wellness in Europe. Poolspa’s products perfectly combine utility with sophistication and inspiring design. The company’s object is to take care of the health, beauty and comfort of its customers. The business is highly respected both on the domestic and European markets and, with its relentless passion, it keeps exploring the sensual and regenerating powers of water.

A trajectory of milestones

Established in 1991 by Evan Olsen, Poolspa has always placed a lot of emphasis

on export. In 1993 the firm started exporting its goods to Scandinavia, and in the following years to Ukraine, Hungary and Germany respectively. The Polish market is equally important, though. The company’s innovation and high quality products allowed for setting the trends in the production of hydromassage equipment in Poland. In 1999 all Poolspa’s shares were bought by Roca Sanitario S.A., a Spanish company the biggest producers of sanitary products in the World and the second world producer of bathroom equipment. Less than a year later, Roca was planning the construction of a modern facility located in Gryfice. After the investment had been completed, it burnished the company’s image in many ways, turning it into a strong and competitive market player. The up-to-the-minute production plant with a floor area of 12.000 square meters, modernized machines and fire system as well as eco-friendly approach are now the general hallmarks which make Poolspa one of the most fashionable acrylic products plants in Europe. Furthermore, the development of spa products paved the way for propagating the idea of wellness in Poland, thus elevating the company to the top rungs of the business ladder.

It should come as no surprise that the enterprise holds customer satisfaction in high esteem. The most important factor affecting the relations with customers is the top quality of products which combine comfort of use with sublime and inspiring design. All actions are motivated by the customer’s needs and preferences

Melody 210x105 because, as the company admits, the customer confidence and satisfaction are pivotal to the success of Poolspa. Throughout almost two decades, the company has won the trust of customers and now it prospers very well thanks to an added value which incorporates such distinctive features as innovative designs, originality, diversity, top quality, global strategy and extensive experience in developing new products. Secondly, the company owes its strength to employees who nurture the product at each stage of production until it is safe and sound in the hands of the customer. Special teams of workers always make sure that the customer received the product tailored to his or her needs and requirements. The enterprise specializes in the production of hydromassage bathtubs and, when it comes to this product, it has surely assumed leadership on the Polish market. Besides, Poolspa produces also ordinary acrylic bathtubs, massage and steam cabins, massage panels, shower trays and shared spa bathtubs. According to the company, there were several stepping-stones to success. Robust relations between employees, managers and directors were one of them. One of the most significant decisions, however, was the development of the production hall. The steps were taken to enhance the production by increasing the number of furnaces, creating new laminating line and modernizing work stations. The new system is now more environmentally-friendly, as it meets all environmental protection requirements and reduces the amount of pollutants to the absolute minimum, posing no threat to the environment as a result. Another key factor was an incorporation of Poolspa to the Roca Sanitario S.A.

group which enjoys international prestige. Apart from Roca and Poolspa, the Polish market abounds with other companies incorporated to the Roca group, i.e. Laufen, Jika, Sanitana, Gala, Bellavista.

Think local, act global!

Poolspa is very important to the local community as an employer. In 2003 the company had a total of 150 full-time staff, whereas at present the number has grown to 250 people. The stability of the business and development plans give a guarantee to safe and long-lasting employment. What is more, the number of people engaged in the vicarious development of the Poolspa is even greater, for the firm co-operates with myriad local suppliers and schools, offering apprenticeship programmes to young and energetic school graduates. What is more, the enterprise arranges a number of social events such as Children’s Day, family picnics, carnival balls etc. Investment types are dual. On the one hand, the firm injects money into the development of facilities and technology, and into human capital on the other. First and foremost, Poolspa offers job careers mainly to local inhabitants, yet it harmonizes the employment with actual demands of the market. Moreover, the company’s promotion policy contributes to the development of sound relations between employees, whereas professional training courses aim to increase their qualifications on regular basis. And last but not least, the company managed to implement a principle of full mobility of blue-collar workers, ensuring a flexible adjustment of the number of employees to volatile market. As the company admits, a concern for the customer is about maintaining and improving relations with the receiver every time the customer gets in touch with the company. For example, the company exports many goods to DenWaterspace 220x230x108 mark, Norway, Sweden, Latvia, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Austria, Switzerland, UK and Spain. Bound to be flexible

The ratio between the company’s domestic and overseas sales has shifted in recent years. Since Poolspa is now backed up by Roca in dealings with local customers, it can devote more attention to the development of services aimed at foreign customers. What is more, despite the recent economic slowdown, the enterprise has not observed a decrease in sales because hydromassage is viewed as a luxurious product. The meaning of the word ‘flexibility’ is by far well-known to the company. Poolspa shows a considerable degree of flexibility in the production, thus providing constant updates on its products. It works on innovative avant-garde solutions in the field of hydromassage and since Poolspa’s plant was chosen for a hydromassage centre, the enterprise has had full financial and technological support to meet the demands of both European and intercontinental customers. For instance, the enterprise won the first prize on many occasions for the following products: hydromassage system Platinium, hydromassage system Titanium, Quarzo bathtub, Mini swimming pools spa, shower cabin Matropolis, to name just a few. The bathtub Waterspace SPA Poolspa won the prize at the contest “Perfect Line 2009 Spa Business” during which the best products for spa centres were presented. The bathtub is one of Poolspa’s latest products allowing seven people to take a bath at the same time. Finally, the company remarks that Poolspa should not only be associated with bathtubs, but with the general pleasure flowing from hydromassage. It strongly advocates a healthy physical and mental lifestyle and recommends taking lots of pleasure from using Poolspa’s products.

DAKO opens its windows to the world

Short introduction: yesterday and today for DAKO

DAKO Window Factory was established in 1994 in Nowy Sącz, one of the most well-developed cities in this region of south Poland. The very beginning of its activity is closely combined with vinyl joinery. After a few years, at the turn of 1997 and 1998, company expanded its manufacturing capacity to aluminum and steel constructions, roller blinds, interior and exterior window-sills, textile roller blinds and mosquito screens and. Since 2002 range of produced goods is even more impressive, thanks to additional wooden windows, and garage doors. Finally company is able to respond accordingly and completely to customers multiple demands. Today, after 15 years of its activity on the Polish market, DAKO company reached the top in the particular industrial branch of window, door and related accessories production. By keeping stable ratio of growth, and by constant technological modernization, both the production lines and product offer itself, company managed to become one of the leader in the construction sector. It is well-

72 Manufacturing-Journal Księga1.indb 74

known and often mentioned in official statements that DAKO’s great achievement and one of the strongest point, is its excellent cooperation and partnership with such world-wide window industry main suppliers as VEKA, Winkhaus, Press Glas, Glaspol and Aluprof.

Company’s mission,

the average clients and a satisfactory offer of high-class selection which creates its own prestige and popularity. Low price serial windows, doors etc. are mostly an effect of budget cuts on one or more levels of production, so basically we cannot really speak in terms of quality standards here. A cheap product is a meagre one, and this is absolutely not what DAKO’s business vision stands for. Company’s

targets and way to success

Paraphrasing the opinion of Chairman of the Board, Mr. Jerzy Studziński, each manufacturer, representing no matter which branch of industry, has to answer an unpretentious but fundamental question – who is going to be a recipient of company’s offer? Window producer faces quite a dilemma to start with, because he has to choose between mass production of construction product without any brand for

partments, banks, housing co-operative societies and other institutions. Growing number of satisfied Clients and Coherent seem to be the best determinant of DAKO’s position in this branch of industry. On the other hand, company really looks after its employees. Specialized, competent and loyal personnel is the foundation of its all successful activities. Company’s philosophy presumes special care of work environment and work conditions, appropriate salaries and package social deals. DAKO accentuates the importance of raising qualifications and working out some new competences of its employees, and it supports them on each level of specialization. At the moment company employs almost four hundred people, and it seems that DAKO knows all about motivational methods and employer-employee trust basis. Employees achievements and engagement are always being appreciated and adequately rewarded. For example, not long ago, DAKO Window Factory Dealers, as a gratification of their selling and marketing skills, had a chance to visit Egypt and admire its culture, history and traditions. Recipients of this particular distinction have spend this visit in most luxury conditions and explored almost everything what is possible to see having such short amount of time. There is no doubts, that after this event, they will try even harder to prove that their company was right by choosing them, as its dealers. The client-centered mission determines special care which is being attached to the quality of windows, doors and other company’s products. All of them are being carried out in accordance with modern regulations and esthetic standards, and ambitions and road to success are forwarded to the highest quality of production. Most importantly, its products pride themselves on great connotations in the consumer’s opinion, and after years of keeping this tradition and approach updated, the benefits are gradually appearing. Client’s satisfaction and contentment are the main target and the best reward for DAKO’s efforts. Each day company does everything to assure the collaboration with the, as pleasant and memorable as possible. Not to be groundless, company’s status was proven many times by number of certificates, prizes and titles granted by autonomy institutions, branch societies and business magazines. In the great number of these honors we can find such distinctions as Reliable Company, Fair Play, Business Gazelle, EuroBrand,

Golden Company, and the best Sales Dynamics. These prizes are even more significant in the varied references context. DAKO’s projects and realizations do not only regard private properties, and private investors, but the company takes part frequently in other, rather co-operational ventures. However, as it was underlined few times before, the factor which is valid the most for DAKO is the customer’s respect and trust. Each client is important and company makes every effort to treat each person or enterprise individually and exceptionally. For years company has been elevating a good opinion and circle of trust by creating a wide system of Commercial and Business Partners. Furthermore, DAKO earned a trustworthy status from number of big building and construction enterprises, office de-

moreover, they are being made by usage of assorted, high-class components. Thanks to company’s own transportation fleet, ready products can be easily, instantly and safely delivered straight to the customer’s hands. DAKO fulfils clients expectations in the operating range of efficient production process, competent services and logistics planning. Briefly speaking, owing to the modern technological solutions, innovative transport park and, especially, to the loyal and professional stuff, DAKO is there for you, always on time.

Recent Changes and Prospects for the Future

Last few years were very profitable for DAKO and brought many evolutional changes. Company took part in several huge projects and investments not only in Poland, but also in some other European countries. Especially remarkable has been year 2008, when the company was celebrating the termination of new, highgeneration class office building, and the opening of improved, grand production houses. Since July 2008, DAKO operates from new office. All those transformations influenced significantly the production strength and company was able to offer new work places and widen its employment capacity. In the preceding year, Chairman of the Board, Mr. Jerzy Studziński, has been pronounced the best from the bests – Manager of the European Enterprise. He has been rewarded according to the company deserts for regional economy. After such triumphs it is completely understandable, that DAKO sees

74 Manufacturing-Journal Księga1.indb 76

future only in bright colours. Company’s range is constantly expanding thanks to intensive and surprisingly efficient marketing campaign all over the Europe. It has been few years, DAKO’s products are well-known in Germany, France, Sweden, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Spain and Hungary. Over one third of DAKO’s vinyl, aluminum and wooden windows, doors, and other products is intended for export. In spite the fact, that current market floats may be disturbing and the economy’s oscillations are a bit alarming, DAKO’s is not afraid of new challenges and fresh ideas. Company’s statement clearly underlines that, even though, Polish market is exposed to economical turbulences, they are not as worrying as they seem, at least not for company with such high,

stable position and great experience baggage. This temporary stagnation is not even a smallest threat for the company’s structure and well-developed strategies. Moreover, the latest business forecasts expect a significant increase of demand for aluminum. It has been few years, the aluminum rises its impact in DAKO’s wholesale, and most likely and hopefully this process will continue. On the other side, the company systematically widens the number of big investments and realizations, where it can really express its potential by performing the facades constructions in the newest technological methods. DAKO’s activity in this specific branch of industry proves that the company thinks way ahead and stands for more than one business and market directions.

Would You care for a cup of tea?

T

EEKANNE is a one of the most popular brands among the tea enthusiasts all over the world, well-known since the XIX century. The Company itself occupies the strong position on a frontline of the global tea production field. The current numbers are pretty impressive – TEEKANNE Group operates on the majority of the world’s markets, possesses its manufacturing plants in eight countries and distributional centers in nineteen. This article presents an interesting review of TEEKANNE Poland activity, company’s mission, philosophy, goals and main products. It is always good to share the inside view of our favorites, so do not hesitate and enjoy your cup of tea during the reading. Shall we?

Global and Polish origins of TEEKANNE

TEEKANNE Group was established literally out of love for tea. 124 years ago, two great enthusiasts of this noble

drink, Mr. Rudolf Anders and Mr. Eugen Nissle, have started the business which quickly developed into the production giant on the world wide scale. Apart from the special care for the best quality of a product, the company has been always a precursor of the technological innovations and a great example of new idea implementation. Introduction of the packed tea blends, at the very beginning of its activity, has enabled the company a fast expansion on the International market. However, the most crucial moment has come in 1949. At that time TEEKANNE revolutionized the whole branch of tea production, by initiating the innovatory double chamber express tea bags. The idea turned out to be brilliant. The new construction of tea bag allowed optimizing the water effect on tea. Thanks to that innovation the cup of hot water is able to extract the deepest aroma from the tea bag. Moreover, that innovation was the key contribution to the contemporary company’s success. The Polish department of TEEKANNE Group, so called TEEKANNE Poland, was created in 1992 in Cracow. It operates permanently since 17 years, both the company’s office and the production plant. Since the establishment, TEEKANNE Poland has harmonized perfectly with the local market and holds bravely the leading position among the Polish competition. The company representatives see the major merit of this current situation in the excellent quality of TEEKANNE products. As the Manufacturing Journal magazine has been informed, TEEKANNE Poland yearly registers a really slight number of complaints. Never the less, if there happen to be one or so, it all seems to be a result of the mechanic damages or other small logistics problems coming from the company’s contractors. Satisfying customer’s needs and desires is a matter of priority for TEEKANNE Poland. The company puts a

lot of effort to satisfy all clients, and, what is more, to surprise them constantly with something new and exciting. Fortunately the popularity of tea consuming creates a perfect condition for development. Poland ranks as a one of the countries with the highest coefficient of tea consumption. That is why the general company’s strategy concentrates on 3 main fields of action: clients, offer and distribution. The company offers its customer high quality products in the reasonable price. But enough with these generalities. Let us have a closer glance on the most important element – tea.

What’s so special about TEEKANNE tea?

If we honestly want to approach to TEEKANNE Poland qualities and advan-

76 Manufacturing-Journal Księga1.indb 78

tages we should probably take a better look on company’s employees in the first place. Currently the company employs 145 permanent workers in such departments and sectors as production, sales, administration, marketing and logistics. The employees are willing to work for the general well-being of the enterprise, because they believe that their actions really matters. So does the common enthusiasm for tea, which spreads on everyone involved. From the more formal point of view, the company offers stable work conditions, many possibilities of personal and professional development, qualification raisings and a great, friendly atmosphere which attaches employees for years. One of the most important issues for TEEKANNE is the level of inside organizational communication. The company treats very seriously the idea of free interpersonal contacts. It comes from the assumption that only strongly integrated team is able to act properly and efficient. Then again, TEEKANNE as wholeness is all about integrity, innovation, long time traditions and the highest quality. This special quality of produced tea does not necessarily comes only from the respect of law requirements, but also as a result of producer’s standards. The company picks only the best plants from which the tea is being made. From the moment of receiving the natural resources, to the stage of readiness, both the taste and aroma are controlled with the sensory examinations. After those first tests tea is examined in labs, and after the careful consideration the decision

regarding the continuation of treatment is being made. This process takes place with the aid of technology and machines specially designed by TEEKANNE engineers themselves. TEEKANNE is known as an unrivalled leader in the green and white tea sector, but the company offers a wide assortment of other products as well. We can choose from more than 50 different kinds and tastes. That fact though, does not stop further innovations and new coming products. Each year is the best year to surprise TEEKANNE customers once again. In the past season the company has added to its assortment two top-notch products – Green Tea Echinacea and Granny’s Finest (the composition of elderberry, vanilla and plump taste). For this year another tasty surprise is announced, but it is still confidential. Among the many delicious choices there are two TEEKANNE’s products predominating over the others – Green Tea Opuncia and Green Tea Lemon. However, the fruit tea sector has also its winners, most popular among the costumers – Magic Moments (blend of natural fruits with orange, rum and grape aromas) and Fresh Orange (blend of fruits with the orange aroma). Unshakable trust and fondness is attached also to the famous aromatic black tea with the Irish Cream taste. The company is proud of its products and their popularity, but it always underlines that whole manufacture process is being controlled from the environmental side. The care for natural environment is the considerable matter for TEEKANNE, which is trying to minimize the negative impacts, by the range of various actions. For example tea packaging is all made from the biodegradable materials. Any wastes, which are being collect-

ed during the production process, are carefully segregated and recycled.

TEEKANNE Poland recently

and today

Four years ago the company has changed its organizational structure. The main pressure has been put on the development of sales. The marketing department was established, and by the close cooperation between those two areas, company’s distribution and promotion has largely increased. Currently TEEKANNE products are available in almost all modern commerce institutions. They are not only available almost everywhere, but what is important – they are being bought frequently. The society has changed recently. People think more about their health and well-being, so

they

choose what would be the best for their

positive disposition. This increasing trend for the healthy, pro natural lifestyle is a one of the key contributions to the company’s contemporary success. In the preceding year 2008 sales of the white tea increased 60%. The dynamic growth of green tea’s sales is also impressive. Do we really need another proof of the society’s changing consciousness? TEEKANNE provides us with the articles that we want. We have an access to them almost everywhere. From the general office in Salzburg the distribution of TEEKANNE’s tea is coordinated in the „Mintex” Central and Nina Mikołajczyk-Grzelak South Europe. Great taste The Regional Dairy Cooperative Kosów Lacki is situated in the east part of Masovian Voivodeship (East-central Poland - North-East direction from Warsaw, to be exact). The location is often considered as almost charming and captivating, because the whole plant operates just on borderland of Bug Landscape Park, which is famous of its rich and unique natural life, thanks to the low-intense level of human interference. The Park was established to protect natural values of the unique Bug River Valley and to promote eco-development of the area, which constitute the southern part of “Green lungs of Poland”. The company’s territory is ecologically fine, thus as a symbol, since the 1998, The RDC Kosów Lacki can officially use the promotional sign of “Green Lungs”. The Regional Dairy Cooperative in Kosów Lacki was established and has started its activity almost a century ago, in 1926. The first steps on the dairy market were connected with rather limited milk purchase and the butter production. Unfortunately, when the Second World War times

had come, the factory was totally destroyed to the ground. The new plant, the current one, was renovated and ready to operate in the Sixties. During the last 40 year in business, the factory was constantly being extended and modernize. The company had taken care of construction of some new facilities, such as cottage-cheese production line and warehouses for the finished products. However, the most crucial and significant changes for the company’s developmental status has occurred in 2002. Probably, that was a year of many transformations, not only in Kosów Lacki, but basically in the national dairy industry as a wholeness. The opportunities, the aid financial programs, which were offered before and after the accession of Poland to the European Union, has opened many new possibilities and fresh view on the company’s progress and future prospects. Those were the days, when the RDC Kosów Lacki had made into existence the modern hall for the milk receipt, the apparatus facility compatible with the valid standards and norms, and the cheese ripening center with the expeditionary warehouse. The company did not confine itself to the constructional improvements

but also invested in its logistics. Owing to that, presently the RDC Kosów Lacki has a well-equipped and fast transportation float, which has optimized considerably the milk collection process. Today, thanks to many factors, as it was written above, the Regional Dairy Cooperative Kosów Lacki is a distinguishing itself company, with the great reputation, and aspirating to lead on the national dairy market. Possibly it will eventually happen, but before that let us have a quick glance at the company’s offer, values, goals, and other important elements of its whole profile.

The quality and taste above all

The food industry is really competitive and a market itself seems to be the most demanding. There is no place for botch -ups and even the smallest mistake threatens with the loss of the all past achievements. The RDC underlines that each activity is being carry out particularly with having in mind the well-being and satisfaction of the final clients. The customer’s wishes and expectations regarding company’s products mark up the road of development and the necessary improvements. Firstly, the product has to properly attract the future customer, but after that the thing that matters the most it is its high quality and taste. Both of these issues are being very seriously treated by the company, and this special care is an essential of the strategic potential and a reason of its present market success. The company’s policy is customer oriented, and what is connected with it, the policy also assumes the constant improvement of the production process. That mission enables to assure that the RDC’s Kosów Lacki food offer presents the highest level of health safety. In consequence of this long-lasting attitude the brand itself and the taste virtues of products have gained a proper esteem and are really appreciated in the client’s opinion. Beyond the quality of pro-

Księga1.indb 81

duct, which obviously has to be the highest possible, the company honestly works on its marketing public image. There is a lot of factors that influence the product acceptance, when it calmly lays on the shop shelves. The envelopes with clear designs and company’s marks and the color scheme assure the recognition. On the other hand, the advertising actions and widespread accessibility ought to guarantee that the popularity of RDC’s Kosów Lacki dairy products will constantly grow. This marketing strategy combined with the commercial one, which includes new products and brands introduced systematically, works very efficiently. The company does not reduced its actions to the simple, rather not well-considered publicity, but au contraire, it puts a lot of pressure on analyzing the customer’s tastes and current needs. The RDC’s campaigns include the examinations of the situation on the market, researches concerning client’s satisfaction and preferences. Adequately, the promotional moves concentrates on the participations in many kinds of trade fairs, expositions, and of course, on the widely implied publicity. These, from the extern point of view, key activities support the company’s main goal, that is to capture the top level of product quality. The way chosen to achieve this goal is by striving to the total quality

management. To score the company has to take into the consideration several determinants – the human factor, the suppliers and their materials, the sales department and of course the Management Board itself. The company prides itself on the competent and devoted employees, which in this moment number a bit more than 250 people. Those employees, with their everyday work at the factory, at the marketing offices, in logistics, at the company’s sewage treatment plant, on the patrol stations and in the technique, administrative and health departments, prove that their devotion to the well-being of the RDC Kosów Lacki is real. The company all the same cares about its members and offers them not only the strengthen workplace, but

also an attractive range of welfares, and many possibilities of personal and professional development. Thanks to this beneficial man to man cooperation the company is proud to presents its products in whole glory. Let us look at them as well...

The tasty offer

The Regional Dairy Cooperative Kosów Lacki is functioning in the customer’s minds especially as a producer of the supreme, brand name maturing cheeses. It is also one of the most valued butter and cottage cheese producers, which perform the traditional method of production assuring the extraordinary taste sensations. The company’s most representative product is a kind of cheese called Edamer, but the other brands of Swiss and Dutch cheeses, such as Baron or Lackdamer, are worth to be mentioned too. The clients are also really fond of “the Dutch” collec-

tion, that includes Gouda, Edamski and Podlaski cheese, as well as the newest propositions – Jubilat and Gauda smoked cheeses. This popularity seems not to have an influence on the company’s future prospects. There is not a slightest thought of slowing down. The RDC claims that the first moves are being made to even widen the assortment, and in the following year the company will bring to us two, absolutely new products, which hopefully will concur the market. Unfortunately, our m a gazine was not allowed to take an inside look on thes e tempting projects. They should rest in secrecy till the day of the official premiere – for the good luck of course. The company’s products have a lot of advantages, mostly those tasteful ones. However, the company’s representative admits that RDC Kosów Lacki is not strongly competitive in terms of product prices. Why so? It all comes from honest reasons. The company does not want to replace the expensive milk fat by its cheaper substitutes. In this case, the

Food & Beverage Industry > OSM Kosów Lacki Księga1.indb 83

classic rule appears – not always a low price agrees with the high quality – thus, even though the company realizes the probable loss of clients interest, it will not throw out its own precious beliefs to the garbage. Nevertheless, the RDC is considered as rather flexible company, which will adapt to the different market circumstances, unless they do not required the bending down of the company priorities. Today, in spite of the crisis, the Regional Dairy Cooperative Kasów Lacki prospers really good, thanks to the great management, intense employer’s work, well-planned marketing actions and of course thanks to the fabulous cheeses and other dairies. Those products are not only gladly welcomed on national tables, but they are appreciated on the international market - in England, Italy, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Estonia. Who knows what direction the future will show, but whatever it would be, the great success of Polish cheeses from Kosów Lacki is not a plan – it happens now, and it is a reality.
