Area Weathers Another Ice Storm, Tragic Consequences Occur All major roads heading in and out of Zachary were closed down last week for almost 48 hours due to tremendously ice buildup after conditions Tuesday night and worsened overnight due to freezing temperatures. Zachary Schools took the extraordinary step of cancelling school for three days due to the treacherous conditions. For Zachary small businesses, the wintry mix late Tuesday that turned city streets and highways into slippery sheets of black ice brought logistical challenges and adjustments to normal operations. Major retailers like Walmart didn’t open Wednesday morning, however both Winn Dixie and Rouses opened with the limited staff. The treacherous weather was responsible for one area fatality of a first responder. A volunteer firefighter was killed after responding to a crash Wednesday morning, according to Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office. Chief Russell Achord, 48 of St. Francisville, was responding to a crash on U.S. 61 when an Dodge Ram pulling a trailer crashed into the initial scene, striking the fire chief, Lee said. Achord died of his injuries. He was

the Wakefield Volunteer Fire Chief 51-year-old Robert McCoy, of Tallulah, lost control of the Dodge Ram on the icy roadways while approaching the crash scene. McCoy’s truck hit multiple first responder’s vehicles and Achord. Two other people were also injured in the crash. McCoy was not injured and was properly retrained at the time. Achord was transported to West Feliciana Hospital where he died of his injuries. The incident happened around 11 a.m. on U.S. 61 near St. Francisville. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this dedicated firefighter, as well as to his fire service family and the community of West Feliciana Parish,” said State Fire Marshal Butch Browning. The Zachary Fire Department moved one of their fire engines to West Feliciana Parish Wednesday afternoon to help cover the region while West Feliciana Parish officials responded to the crash involving one of their own, according to the Zachary Fire Department. The flag at the Louisiana Fallen Firefighter Memorial was lowered to half mast Wednesday afternoon in Achord’s honor.

Regional Arts Council Of Zachary Announces Spring Line Up For Concerts At The Point The Regional Arts Council of Zachary will present three concerts for the Spring 2018 concert series, Concerts at the Pointe. The concert series makes quality performing arts easily accessible to the residents of Zachary and surrounding communities. For Spring 2018, RACZ has selected three very different musical acts to delight audiences. Magnolia String Quartet - February 27 The Original Magnolia String Quartet has been providing beautiful music for weddings, parties and religious functions in the Baton Rouge and surrounding area for over 25 years. As native Louisianians and graduates of the LSU Music School, active members of the Baton Rouge Symphony, Louisiana

Sinfonietta, and freelance ensembles, they have played with well known performers such as Yo-Yo Ma, Isaac Perlman, Renee Flemming, Moody Blues, Ben Vereen, Chris Boti, Metropolitan Opera vocalists, and many more. Fat City Swing Orchestra - April 24 Enjoy the swing music and the dixieland style jazz of New Orleans! This

wonderful Louisiana orchestra is led by Jon and Wesley Mannino on Bass and drums, Aaron Turnipseed on piano, David Will on trumpet, Justin Pardue on trombone, and Jonathan Lyons on sax and clarinet. You will smile and tap your toe to this great swing orchestra! Michael McDowell - May 15 Born and raised in Baton Rouge, Michael McDowell has a musical upbringing as varied as Louisiana’s multicultural background.Though classically trained, he grew up listening to the piano stylings of Elton John and George Winston and began composing for piano before he was a teenager. Now he defines his unique style as “classical-contemporary crossover”. Drawing from the rhythmic syncopations of modern music and complex

harmonic and melodic contours of Baroque and Classical composers, each piece McDowell performs is a virtuosic gumbo seasoned with his own distinctive touch and flare- an approach that has earned him a considerable following. McDowell has performed at the Shaw Center in solo and with an orchestra. You will be enthralled by his showmanship and his artistry. All three concerts will be held at The Pointe at Americana in Zachary. The concerts will begin at 7:00pm. Tickets for single concerts or for the entire series are available on raczachary.tix.com. Tickets for single concerts are $15 for RACZ members and $20 for non-members. Series tickets are $35 for members and $50 for non-members.

Bank of Zachary Announces Promotions The Bank of Zachary has promoted two officers, President Mark Marionneaux announced following December’s Board meeting. Loretta Barber has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Deposit Operations. Amanda Moran has been promoted to Assistant Vice President and Loan Officer. As Vice President, Ms. Barber currently oversees our deposit compliance, account services team and supports our online and mobile banking platforms. Already a tremendous asset to the bank, this promotion will allow her to join the Senior Management team and have a greater impact on policy and strategic initiatives. A graduate of LSU, she has been in banking for 37 years and with the Bank of Zachary for 29 years. She is also a 2017 graduate of the LBA Leadership School. A lifelong resident of Baker, she has two sons, Anthony, Jr. and Nicholas, and two grandsons.

Amanda Moran

Mrs. Moran was promoted to Assistant Vice President and Loan Officer after excelling in our mortgage loan officer training program. Mrs. Moran has been in banking for 13 years and with

Loretta Barber

the Bank of Zachary for 10 years originally serving as Universal Banker supervisor and managing the Bank’s online services. She has been actively involved in the Bank’s support of local commu-

nity events and enjoys establishing relationships with customers who prefer the community banking experience. Amanda and her husband Dwayne have three children, Addisyn, Payton and Paige and they reside in Pride. Founded in 1904, Bank of Zachary is the oldest State chartered bank in East Baton Rouge Parish serving residents, businesses and communities. Bank of Zachary is locally owned and operated. Hometown banking is Bank of Zachary’s mission and specialty. The Bank of Zachary is a member of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Bank of Zachary Reminds Consumers about Avoiding Fraud and Scams During this Tax Season

Tax season is here and for some that can mean an experience with tax identity theft or IRS imposters. Tax identity theft occurs when someone uses your Social Security number to file a tax return claiming a fraudulent refund. You may be unaware that this has happened until you EFile your return and discover that a return already has been filed using your SSN. Or, the IRS may send you a letter saying they have identified a suspicious return using your SSN. Also, IRS imposters work yearround placing aggressive, threatening phone calls claiming you owe taxes. They might know all or part of your Social Security number, and can modify caller ID information to make it look like it really is the IRS calling. Due to last year’s shocking an-

nouncement by Equifax that millions of the public had fallen victim to a data breach, it is more important than ever to stay vigilant over your personal information. Not all data breaches or computer hacks result in tax-related identity theft. It’s important to know what type of personal information was stolen. You can reduce your risk of becoming a victim of tax fraud. According to the IRS website www.irs. gov you should do the following: • Always use security software with firewall and anti-virus protections. Use strong passwords. • Learn to recognize and avoid phishing emails, threatening calls and texts from thieves posing as legitimate organizations such as your bank, credit card companies and even the IRS.

• Do not click on links or download attachments from unknown or suspicious emails. • Protect your personal data. Don’t routinely carry your Social Security card, and make sure your tax records are secure. It’s also important to remember that the IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.

This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. Report suspicious online or emailed phishing scams to: phishing@irs.gov. For phishing scams by phone, fax or mail, call 1-800-3664484. Report IRS impersonation scams to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration’s IRS Impersonation Scams Reporting.

Chief David McDavid Thankful for Donations CMES Announces January Star Students I would like to take this opportunity to thank InVEST in our heroes President Sydney Wagaspack and Vice President Lauren Tomchek for the generous donation of twenty tactical trauma first aid kits with the additional items of a Combat Tourniquet, Advanced Quick Clot Sponge and Trauma wound dressing to the Zachary Police Department. During these troubled days often times smaller agencies such as ourselves struggle to keep up with the variety of equipment needed due to the tremendous cost.
