A Walk Along Main Street By Daniel Duggan

The Zachary Post and Feliciana Explorer have never been more vital to our Zachary and Feliciana community, and I wanted to update the public on what we are doing to keep our customers informed and meet the challenges of the economic slowdown. Our community needs accurate communication now more than ever, we have ramped up our digital presence with EEditions through Facebook and Issuu.com and have seen tremendous growth this past week through those platforms. LIKE the Zachary Post and Feliciana Explorer on Facebook and the paper will be shown to you prior to even being printed. We have transformed many of our work processes to allow employees to work remotely. Our newspapers are delivered by me in conjunction with an independent carrier and will continue to be until we are back up to full speed. As the Zachary Post and Feliciana Explorer have been deemed an “essential” business by Gov. Edwards, we will remain open and we have increased cleaning and sanitization at the printing press where we produce the Zachary Post and Feliciana Explorer - at the same time, the government and business closures, have impacted our advertising partners, so our ad volume has dropped off by about 75% during this pandemic crisis. As a result, we have been forced to turn to some cost savings – we are trimming the paper size we use to print the paper, this is a temporary move to prevent us from having to furlough employees during this unprecedented time. We are open to support your business and classified ad needs, feel free to call us at 225-654-0122 or email us at info@ zacharypost.com or info@felicianaexplorer.com. The coronavirus crisis is bringing out the best in our community with neighbors helping neighbors, and people using their own resources to bolster our small business operators hit hardest during this downturn. Zachary Post and Feliciana Explorer and our staff are committed as ever. Please support the small businesses that support us.

Zachary Residents and Businesses Adapt to Shutdown

After Governor Edwards announced a statewide stay at home order last week, Zachary’s essential businesses pounced into action to thwart the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Here are some images of our essential Zachary workers and businesses in action. The “Stay At Home Order” will be effective Monday, March 23rd at 5 pm and go through Sunday, April 12th. Like Governor Edwards, it is also my opinion that nobody should wait until tomorrow to comply with these orders, the time is now. In this order, he is asking for public gatherings of only ten or less persons, and to not gather in crowds. I am asking you to not take this action lightly, limit your gatherings now. All citizens are being asked to stay at home unless it is absolutely necessary to leave. You can leave your home to do essential things, such as purchasing groceries, medicine, attending doctor’s appointments, picking up food at drive-through, curbside or take-out restaurants, or going to work if you are deemed essential on your job. If you have to go out, make sure you practice social distancing by keeping 6 feet between you and another person. It is critical to the health and well-being of our community that you

take these measures seriously. Walking outside, riding your bike, and walking your dog is still acceptable and encouraged. The risk of spreading the virus is less outdoors because

there’s more space. This is all aimed at people who are healthy, as the Covid-19 virus is infectious. Remember to keep your distance to 6 feet, even on a walk.

Louisiana is postponing its scheduled April 4 primary due to the coronavirus pandemic with Governor John Bel Edwards signing a proclamation on Friday to move the election to June 20. President Trump on Friday declared a national emergency because of the pandemic. This includes all municpal elections in Zachary orginally scheduled for April 4. At a press conference last Friday morning, Louisiana Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin said a state code about emergencies during elections allowed the primary to be postponed. "Today I have certified that a state of emergency exists and requested that the governor issue an executive order postponing the elections this spring. While hurricanes, floods and tornadoes are at the forefront of all Louisianans

minds, the threat we face from the COVID-19 virus is an unprecedented threat and unlike any we have faced," Ardoin said. In response, the Democratic National Committee says the change could result in Louisiana losing at least half of its delegates, due to a potential violation of their timing rule that all states hold contests by June 9. "We will continue to work with every state party as they adjust their delegate selection plans around coronavirus. Any violation of our rules could result in a penalty that would include a state losing at least half of its delegates. This change will be reviewed by the Rules and Bylaws Committee," said a DNC spokesperson. Senator Karen Carter, the Louisiana Democratic Party chair, said they

are "hopeful" the DNC will work with them to revise the delegate selection plan. "We want to ensure every Louisianian has the chance to make their voice heard in this election. Louisiana Democrats are committed to preserving the health of our neighbors while ensuring the voices of hundreds of thousands of Louisianians are heard," she said. Ardoin has also requested the general elections for municipal general elections be postponed from May 9 to July 25. The office has previously moved election dates in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina and in 2008 after Hurricane Rita. State law states that a governor may take an executive order to suspend or move elections, only after a recommendation from the Secretary of State.

BREC to Close Playgrounds, Dog Parks and Restrooms Through Duration of Stay at Home Order In accordance with the Stay at Home order issued by Governor John Bel Edwards, BREC will close playgrounds, dog parks and outdoor restrooms at the close of business today. They will remain closed until the order is lifted. BREC’s six golf courses will evaluate operations to determine if options are available to continue to offer golfers opportunities to play outdoors while complying with the social distancing and all other state mandates. Parks, trails and conservation areas will remain open and continue to provide a vital resource to the community. “I encourage everyone to follow the Governor’s Stay at Home order, and I want to thank him for including engaging in outdoor activities as an essential activity

as well as for encouraging walking, biking and hiking during this stressful time, said BREC Superintendent Corey Wilson. “Our parks make the perfect safe place for community members to engage in these activities while also providing many physical and mental health benefits. If you visit our parks during this time, please follow the Governor’s orders and come in small groups of less than 10 people and follow CDC guidelines for social distancing and sanitizing your hands every hour. Working together, we will get through this, said Wilson. BREC will continue adding to the online “Refresh Your Mind portal, housing videos which allow residents to experience BREC facilities and activities from the

safety of their homes. The portal is housed at www.brec.org/refresh. Twenty-five BREC parks are also being utilized to provide thousands of meals for atrisk children through a partner-

ship with Three O’clock Project. Routes and schedules for meal deliveries can be found here: www. threeoclockproject/COVID. Please monitor BREC’s website and social media pages for further updates.

In Our Community

The Zachary Rotary Club welcomed the ZHS Lady Broncos Softball Coach, Courtney Barbour to the Rotary meeting/luncheon on February 20. Coach Barbour has led the lady broncos for 4 years. She is excited about the upcoming season and feels this team is loaded with talent. “It should be a fun season and I invite you to come out and cheer on the team,” says Coach Barbour.

The Zachary Rotary Club recently provided a $3,500 grant to the Zachary Historic Depot. The grant will enable the Zachary Historic Committee to purchase 10 tables and 60 chairs for children and young adults to use at events inside the depot. The Rotary District 6200 Foundation exists to support the work of Rotary clubs in the Southwest portion of Louisiana. District grants fund small-scale, short-term activities that address needs in your community and communities abroad. Each district chooses which activities it will fund with these grants.
