The Zachary Community School District held the annual Kindergarten parade from Northwestern Elementary the Friday prior to the Mardi Gras break. Over 400 “floats” manned by kindergarten students and pulled by middle and high school students entertained hundereds of parade attendees as they wound around Rollins Road from Northwestern Elementary to the Zachary Early Learning Center. The Zachary High School Band led the procession. Each teacher’s class had their own theme for the parade. The Zachary Rotary Club recently helped sponsor and assemble “Weekend Snack Packs”, distributed through the Zachary Charity League, in partnership with the Zachary Community School System. Approximately 100 children from food insecure homes receive the weekly snack packs. Pictured: Mac Lea, Josh Detre, Monty Buckles, Charlene Smith, Ruby Homayssi, Charlie Massey, Terry Gomez, David Gomez, Daniel Gomez, Francis Nezianya, Lisa Rioux and Mary Landry. Zachary Rotarians were a part of this outstanding community outreach program. For more information on the Weekend Snack Packs and other community service league projects, visit the ZCL Facebook page at Zachary Charity League.

City of Zachary Announces New Residential Recycling Days

Beginning this month, Waste Management began collecting residential recycling within the city limits of Zachary. This service will be provided once a week per customer. Your recycle route is based on your address and recently might have changed with the new company contract. All recyclable materials must be in a green recycling bin. If you need a green bin, they are available for pickup at the City of Zachary annex, located at 4750 Main Street. All recyclable materials can be mixed in these bins. It is best to put your recycling out the night before it is to be picked up, since route pickup begins early in the morning. “We feel that contracting with the same company for both garbage and recycling will be a plus in the City of Zachary, both economically and efficiently,” says Mayor David Amrhein. Please refer to the New Recycle Route Map to determine your recy-

cle pick up day. All areas West of the railroad tracks and South of Hwy. 64 up to and INCLUDING Oak Trace Subdivision will be collected on Mondays. All areas West of Oak Trace Subdivision, and South of Hwy 64, – NOT INCLUDING Hwy. 64 – except for Hwy 64 West of Hwy 964 (Old Scenic Hwy.), and those areas off of Hwy 64 West of Hwy 964 (Old Scenic Hwy.) will be collected in Tuesdays. All areas East of the railroad tracks will be collected on Thursdays. All areas West of the railroad tracks, North of Hwy 64 - INCLUDING ALL Hwy 64 - , and Hwy. 964 (Old Scenic Hwy.) North of Hwy. 64 will be collected on Fridays. - Does not include Hwy. 64 West of Old Scenic Hwy. Questions relating to recycling can be addressed at City of Zachary Public Works Department, 225 6541902.

Recycling Starts with You...

Zachary Public Works Department representative Lovenia Williams and Zachary Floodplain Manager Amy Schulze visited Zachary Elementary school to distribute “Recycling Starts With You” pencils and recycling resource workbooks to each student. By teaching our children environmentally-friendly living habits, we can instill principles in them that they can carry throughout their lives. The more we teach our children about conservation and waste reduction, the brighter the future is for them and the environment. Pictured is Mrs. Scott’s third grade class at Zachary Elementary. EBR Parish Fire District 1 Receives $5,000 Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigade Grant Fire District 1 was one of 40 fire departments that were awarded Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigade grants in 2017. The department will receive $5,000 to help fund a hydraulic combination rescue tool. This battery-operated tool is smaller and lighter, requiring no hoses or power so a rescue operation can be made much quicker. “The goal since the Bucket Brigade program began has been to help firefighters have the equipment they need help keep the citizens in our communities safe,” explains Kelvin Hill, vice president of manufacturing for Georgia-Pacific’s Port Hudson Operations. The Bucket Brigade program awarded $188,400 in grants to departments in 2017 for equipment critical to firefighters’ safety. Since the program began in 2006, Georgia-Pacific has given more than $2.2 million in cash and educational materials to 287 fire departments that serve the company’s facility communities across the country. Fire Chief Danny Kimble stated, “We are very happy to receive the GP Bucket Brigade Grant. The funds will be utilized to purchase equipment to better serve the community.” Grants are based on need and are funded by the Georgia-Pacific Foundation and local Georgia-Pacific facilities. Funds are typically used to purchase new protective clothing and replace items such as damaged

Firefighter Stevie Douglas, Firefighter Cody Shaffer, Captain Jonathan Knight, Firefighter Gordon Segraves, Port Hudson Vice President of Operations Kelvin Hill, Fire District 1 Board Member Michael Kimble, Captain Jimbo Noland, Firefighter Camron Thompson and Captain Justin Walker attend the Bucket Brigade donation presentation at the Zachary Fire station.

safety gear and aging equipment. Through the program, GeorgiaPacific also gives all grant applicants free memberships to The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), which provides access to tools, resources, programs and advocacy for first-responders across the nation. The fire departments receiving Bucket Brigade grants this year span 24 states where Georgia-Pacific has facilities: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virgin-
