Lady Bronco Basketball Stampedes Into State Semifinals
The Zachary High Lady Bronco Basketball team is marching into the State Semifinals. Under the direction of Coach Tami McClure, the squad has run through the first three rounds of the playoffs defeating Lafayette 66-35 in the opening round, in round 2 took down Fountainbleu 49-48, and in the Quarterfinal round defeated Ouachita 62-58. Now fifth-seeded Broncos (26-8) will meet East Ascension (22-2), the No. 8 seed. The team’s achievements are historical. Zachary’s lone title in girls’ basketball came 91 years ago. The Broncos are making their first final four tournament appearance since 1984. “Every day when the girls come to practice they see and banner in the gym has 1927 on it, this whole season has been about pushing things to new levels and accomplishing things we did not do last year. They know the history, and they’re ready to play and would like to do something Zachary hasn’t done in a long time,” Coach McClure said.

Zachary High School Football Team Honored on MaxPreps Tour of Champions
The Zachary High School football team has finished No. 138 nationally for the 2017 season. The announcement was made by MaxPreps, the online high school sports leader and a CBSSports.com site. “Each fall, over sixteen thousand varsity football teams take the field with the dream of winning a state title. Nationwide, the best-of-the-best qualify for recognition on The MaxPreps Tour of Champions. Together, with the Army National Guard, MaxPreps honors the most outstanding teams in the nation for their state championship performance and elite national level ranking,” said Andy Beal, president and founder of MaxPreps. “Congratulations to the Zachary Broncos players, coaches and fans
for an amazing year and for earning the Army National Guard’s national ranking trophy.” Zachary (13-2) defeated Hahnville of Boutte, 34-14, on Dec. 9, 2017, to claim the Louisiana 5A state championship. It was the Broncos second title over the past three seasons. Zachary is one of 50 schools being honored on the MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard. The Broncos football team was also selected to the 2015 Tour of Champions. “MaxPreps does a tremendous job covering high school sports in our country and it’s an honor to be on their list,” said Zachary head football coach David Brewerton, who completed his fourth season. ZCSD Celebrates Black History Month On Thursday, February 22 the Zachary Community School District held a celebration of the “heart and soul” of African Americans’ influence in the arts. Dozens of Students of all races entertained hundreds of participants at the Zachary Performing Arts Center. The program consisted of a living history museum from Zachary Elementary School and extensive ensemble program by ZHS Students with additional assistance from some returning ZHS graduates.
MAXPREPS continued from page 1
Louisiana Army National Guard Sergeant First Class Thomas Bryson presented Coach Brewerton and the team with the Army National Guard national ranking trophy Friday afternoon at a pep rally. The team also received a banner for their accomplishment. “The Army National Guard represents teamwork and a commitment to community and country. Just as your team joins together to defeat adversity and win, the Army National Guard stands vigilant as a team to protect the community and
country in which we live,” said Master Sergeant Mark Wojciechowski. “On behalf of the Army National Guard, I am privileged to recognize this nationally ranked championship team for their dedication, leadership and teamwork.” MaxPreps Computer Rankings are used to determine team rank for the Tour of Champions. The system utilizes the huge number of game results stored in the MaxPreps database. Generally, the more a team wins the higher the ranking, but the system takes into account quality wins (against other highly ranked opponents), margin of victory, and strength.

Milestones William Michael “Bill” Mosley
God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be. So He wrapped his arms around you, and whispered, “Come to Me.” With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, a precious soul at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes His best. - William “Bill” Mosley was born on November 15, 1953, in Pueblo, Colorado and started a new journey in Baker, Louisiana in 1975. He was the owner and founder of Baker Glass Works since May of 1979, President of the Glass Association in the early 1990’s, former President of the Baker Chamber in 1995, and coached Baker Little League for many years. Bill ended his journey on February 24, 2018, at the age of 64. The visitation was at Baker Funeral Home, 6401 Groom Road, Baker, Louisiana,
Births • Engagements • Weddings • Awards Obituaries • Anniversaries • Reunions
on Sunday, February 25, 2018, from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The visitation continued on Monday, February, 26, 2018, at Miracle Place Church, 2080 Main St, Baker, Louisiana, from 10:00 a.m. until services at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Reverend Joshua Crutchfield and Reverend Ricky Sinclair. Bill leaves behind to cherish his memory, a devoted wife of 29 years, Janet Abbott Mosley; daughter, Megan Nicole Mosley; and son, William Hunter Mosley all of Baker, LA. He is survived by sisters, Kathryn Young (Randall) of Tulsa, OK and Lisa Evans (Bill) of Gladewater, TX; a brother, John Mosley of Baton Rouge, LA; and son, from his previous marriage, Mitch Mosley of Baton Rouge, LA.; an adored mother-in-law, Jeanette Abbott Tabler (Charles) of Brusly, LA.; special nieces and nephews; and great-niece, Tori Abbott of Prairieville, LA. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Earnest and Olivet Mosley; and a brother, Joe Mosley. Pallbearers were Dr. Gerald Calegan, Randall Young, Jeff Bourgeois, Dale Abbott, Joey Bruce, and Micah
Schaffer. Honorary Pallbearers were Troy Abbott, Ronnie Bourgeois Sr., Joe Achord, and Glen Chamblee. Bill loved antique cars, especially his 1940 Chevy Coupe, watching LSU sports, tailgating, camping, and he enjoyed coaching Hunter and Megan through baseball. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Sherelle Beardon and Barbara Latimore, with St. Joseph Hospice, and gratitude to Dr. Gerald Calegan, from the Neuro Medical Center, and Michelle Oreman and Jessica Maulden Johnson for the love and care given
to Bill. A special thanks to Connie Browning and Corinne Cagle for their love and support throughout his journey. In lieu of flowers, request memorial donations be made to LSU Foundation in support of the LSU Parkinson’s Conference, an event that Baker Glass sponsored the past three years in honor of Bill. Checks should be made payable to LSU Foundation and include “Parkinson’s Conference” in the memo line. Memorial donations should be mailed to LSU Foundation, 3796 Nicholson Dr., Baton Rouge, LA 70802.
Billy Guidry and his family have been residents of the Baker-Zachary area since 1978. Billy, as well as his wife Sandra and children have been integral parts of the community since they planted roots here decades ago. A vital member of the Baker Team, Billy considers it a privilege consulting with families and directing funeral services.
