Must Luv Dogs Announces Upcoming Pet Microchipping Event

On Saturday, February 17, Must Luv Dogs held an Adoption Event at Petsense in Zachary. “We had a wonderful turnout to see our latest batch of six puppies, Australian Mixes, as well as some of our adult dogs who are still waiting for their very own ‘furever’ family,” said Cindy Shotwell, Executive Director of Must Luv Dogs . Must Luv Dogs is Zachary’s only general breed dog rescue offering foster homes for dogs until finding a permanent home. “We are always looking for new foster families. I turn dogs away on a daily basis for lack of available foster homes. Several of our fosters currently are doubled and tripled up with dogs. My husband, Gary, and I currently have 6 foster puppies ourselves, in addition to our personal 3 dogs and 2 cats,” said Cindy. Cindy is extremely passionate about her cause. “Must Luv Dogs was born out of a desire to rescue the many dumped, abandoned and stray dogs of our area. I established the Facebook page ‘Lost Pets of

Barkley Caudle (son of Jenna Williams Caudle & Danny Williams) & “Bailey” a 7 week of Aussie mix.

Zachary, La & the Felicianas’ back in 2012. After a few years and a few thousand followers, it became apparent that the number of lost dogs was vastly outnumbered by the stray population. The history of simply allowing dogs to wander freely in

both the Zachary and Feliciana area, in combination with the utter lack of any parish animal control ordinances or public shelter in East Feliciana has created a constant flow of stray dogs,” said Cindy. Cindy, along with a core group of her dog loving friends and Facebook followers, including “dog whisperer” Doug Atkins, were constantly crawling under buildings, over fences, and doing whatever it took to rescue the many strays reported, fostering, and then re-homing them. The rescues became very expensive, as well as very time consuming. After the August 2016 flood, the stray population in the area exploded. “More dogs were either never recovered by their owners after the flood or just released for lack of a home or funds. It was heart wrenching to watch the numbers reported on the lost pets page. It was exhausting and heartbreaking as well. Dogs are the most loyal friends we can ever have. They are always happy to see us. They are quick to forgive See LUV DOGS on page 2

continued from page 1 us when we are short tempered. Will stand up in our defense in the face of any threat. Yet we as humans let our dog friends down on a daily basis. God gave me a mission that I simply couldn’t shake. I have a burden to speak for these voiceless creatures. So many are abused, neglected, and then dumped. If they are hungry, cold, or thirsty they can’t just knock on your door and ask for help.” So, the idea was born for Must Luv Dogs. “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.” (Proverbs 31:8) This became the group’s mission statement. Cindy relied on her many years of experience as a volunteer in various rescues and shelters and realized Cindy Shotwell reunited with one of the first foster pups she helped rescue, Moe, now her dream of having a foster based known as Waylon. rescue here in Zachary. “It’s a big undertaking and not for the faint of heart. I asked several friends who I knew to be as passionate about this mission as myself to serve on the board of directors, taught myself to create a website, met with my personal local veterinary office about working with me so that I could

keep all of the business right here in Zachary. Then I formed an LLC, obtained a 501(c)3 and Must Luv Dogs was up and running! I have the hardest working and most compassionate group of board members, fosters and volunteers. They amaze and inspire me everyday!” Must Luv Dogs held their first adoption event at PetSense in Zachary on September 30, 2017. Several more adoption events quickly followed. After three months, 49 dogs were placed in homes. “It was like we started off with a slow walk and quickly went into to a sprint. We were so busy that I barely had time to plan. Through fundraising and donations, we did it. It just proved to us all the great need here for this. We have felt the great support of the Zachary area, but we need more help!” 100% of all proceeds donated go directly to pay expenses for the dogs rescued. Currently, their greatest need is for more foster homes. “I turn down an average of 6-8 dogs weekly simply for lack of a foster home to put them in. Fostering may seem scary. Folks tell me they would get too attached, but I prom-

ise I let you know ahead of time that it’s temporary, you truly can do it. Of course, we do get attached and a little piece of our hearts go with each pup when they find their forever family. The reward is that you have the pure joy of knowing that you literally saved a life! It’s very satisfying. Rescue is definitely a calling. In rescue, I see the very saddest of things. I cry a lot. We sometimes see the very worst of humanity. The first thing I do when I rescue a dog is take their face in my hands, look them in the eye, and apologize that some damaged human hurt them and promise them that their life improves from this day forward. That being said, we also see the very best in humanity. The number of folks who step up and choose to be the voice of these suffering souls redeems humanity in
