The news began trickling out late last Monday evening that one of Zachary’s own dual Firemen/Police Officers had been killed by a local drug dealer/career criminal menace. Tuesday morning the announcement was made of the passing of Deputy Chief Christopher M. Lawton on March 12. Chief Lawton passed away while working with the Zachary Police Department on an arrest warrant. Chief Lawton was a dedicated public servant. He served the citizens of Zachary for over 20 years. Chief Lawton became a volunteer firefighter in March of 1996. He then became a full-time firefighter with the Zachary Fire Department in March of 1998, and worked his way through the ranks. At the time of his death, Chief Lawton held the position of Deputy Chief, the second

Fundraiser for Memorial Playground Behind Zachary Depot Underway
Money is being raised to build an inclusive playground in memory of Joseph Hemba who died in a boating accident while hunting in January. A fish fry fundraiser will be held Friday, March 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the City of Zachary Utilities Parking Lot, located at 4650 Main Street to benefit the Joseph Hemba Memorial Playground. Hemba, along with his mother Madeline Hemba, and uncle Darrin Vince, died when their pontoon boat capsized in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, trapping them under the water. Organizers of the fundraiser are hoping to collect enough money to build a new, inclusive commercial playground on city property, behind the historical Zachary Depot, near a
newly constructed walking path. “Our hope is that this playground would serve as a lasting tribute to Joseph, and provide fun and fellowship to children of all ages for years to come,” fundraising chairman Beetle Boudreaux Fisher said. Tickets will be sold for $10 and will include fried fish, french fries, coleslaw and a dessert. Delivery of 10 or more dinners within Zachary city limits is available. Tickets are available at the City of Zachary Utility Office and Pretty Woman Boutique, both on Main Street. For more information, please call Pretty Woman Boutique at 225-6585899.
highest rank within the Zachary Fire Department. He was also an Arson Investigator for the City of Zachary. Chief Lawton served as a Zachary Police Department Reserve Officer, joining the Police Department in May 2008. Over the past 20 years, the citizens have been blessed to have a servant such as Chief Lawton. The City of Zachary Fire Department lost a brother, friend, mentor, leader and dedicated firefighter. Chief Lawton’s knowledge and persistence for excellence will be greatly missed. During Chief Lawton’s career, he received numerous awards including: Medical Life Saves, Fire Stops, Unit and Crew Citations. In 2017, Chief Lawton became a Post Firearm Training Instructor. He was an active and founding member of the Zachary Firefighter Association, Lo-
cal 4644. Chief Lawton was a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators, Zachary Police Reserves, Zachary United Methodist Church and Zachary CrossFit. Lawton became a reserve officer with the Zachary Police Department in 2008, where he worked part-time, as an unpaid volunteer to keep Zachary safe for the last 10 years. Lawton was certified and trained the same as full-time officers, and was a trusted veteran of their force. Lawton is the first Zachary Police Officer to die in the line of duty. Chief Lawton leaves behind a loving wife, Shannon, son Marshall and daughter Claire, and numerous family members. He also leaves behind a fire and police family that will miss him dearly. NMS Presents Once Upon a Crime…The Trial of Goldilocks
Northwestern Middle School will be presenting “Once Upon a Crime…The Trial of Goldilocks” next week in the historic theater on campus at 5200 E. Central Avenue. The play is by Flip Kobler & Cindy Marcus and will be performed by the Advanced Theatre Performance Class at NMS. Will justice be served in this hilarious fairy-tale courtroom play packed with characters we all know and love? It’s up to your audience, which serves as the jury! Goldilocks is the defendant, on trial for breaking and entering. The plaintiffs are — you guessed it — the three bears. As their lawyers Henny Penny and Thumbilina go toe-to-toe hoping to prove their respective clients’ cases, other fairy tale characters are called to testify as witnesses, including Hansel and Gretel, Jack and Cow, and Granny. Even the Big Bad Wolf takes the stand, but can any of these
witnesses be trusted themselves? Is Goldilocks guilty or innocent? With multiple endings to cover each possible outcome, your audience gets to decide her ultimate fate. Night time show dates: March 23 & 24, 7 p.m.; NMS Theater Tickets available at nms.ticketleap.com

BUSINESS IS BOOMING IN ZACHARY Baton Rouge General Plans New Clinics in Zachary, Slaughter Baton Rouge General is expanding its primary care services in the Capital Region by opening new Louisiana Internal Medicine Associates clinics in Zachary and Slaughter. The Zachary clinic is expected to open later this month at 19850 Old Scenic Hwy., near Lake Pointe Avenue, in the same building as the Internal Medicine-Zachary. The Slaughter clinic will open at 1169 La. 19, Suite B later this spring. It will be staffed by Dr. Venu Kakarala, his team, residents and medical students. LIMA clinics serve as rotation sites for internal medicine residents and medical students, who care for adults with complex and chronic conditions. Baton Rouge General opened the first LIMA clinic in December at its Bluebonnet campus. The Zachary clinic builds on an existing partnership with Lane Regional Medical Center that began in 2014 when the two hospitals joined together to offer cancer care at the Radiation Oncology Center on Lane’s campus. “Our partnership with Lane gave us the opportunity to provide cancer care closer to the homes of the people who live in the northern part of the parish,” Edgardo Tenreiro, BRG president and CEO, says in a prepared statement.

GAYLE BATTERY - ALL TYPES OF BATTERIES - GOLF CARTS TOO! -
Local Author Kaylin Haynes to hold a book signing on March 25, Palm Sunday. The event will take place at Barnes and Noble in Perkins Rowe from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. What better time to RISE than during the Easter Season, when we celebrate the Revelation of the Resurrection! What greater love than the love God has for us by giving His only Son to die for a world that could care less. The revelation of the resurrection is this….Jesus paid a price for what we never could. He died for all the ugliness we have, while He is perfect beauty. Let’s think of the worst thing we have ever done, and may still be doing. Whatever that is, He died for it. He bore our worst so we could be birthed into His best. He died for every lie we ever told, while He is nothing but Perfect Truth. When we were doing wrong and didn’t want to be right, He paid the price we could never afford. He died for every hidden adulterous affair, for every penny ever stolen, for every fit of rage and abuse, for every act of hypocrisy, for every scheme and evil plot, for that over exaggeration to get vain glory, for that dismissal of integrity to get that job, for the addictions and pornographic habits He never had. He died for the ministries that rob the poor while all He did was gave His last. He died for all the selfishness in the world while He is eternally generous. He died for the unforgiveness we hold toward others while He forgives us for everything. What if our children or loved ones sacrificed themselves for a world that continues to mock their death by still choosing to be evil? Let’s ask God for forgiveness for the times we took salvation for granted. Let’s ask Him to give us all an intimate revelation of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ during this season and always. Let’s intercede for one another to grow in the knowledge of God’s Truth. Don’t give up on your spiritual process to progress. He didn’t die to stay on the cross. He died for the worst in us so we can become the best in Him. It’s time to RISE.

Local high school students Cooper Roddy, a home-schooled student; Katie Mestayer of Zachary High School; Rachael Coates and Anna Couhig of St. Joseph’s Academy each won an allexpense paid trip, this coming June, to Washington, D.C. They were the four winners of the 41st Annual DEMCO Rural Electric Youth Tour Essay Contest. Each student who participated wrote an original essay as a letter to an elected official of their choosing to address an issue of importance to the author. The four winners were selected March 6, 2018 during a banquet honoring the 12 finalists, their families, teachers, and school principals. The banquet was the 41st annual event and was held at John Folse’s White Oak Plantation in Baton Rouge. They will also join about 1,300 other Youth Tour participants from around the nation to learn more about electric cooperatives and our government. 2018 marks the 41st year DEMCO has sponsored students in the Youth Tour program. Who Is Parish Crawfish?
The Greater Baton Rouge Model Railroaders will host their annual Spring Open House at their facility in Jackson LA, on Friday and Saturday, March 23rd and 24th. Times are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. Located behind the museum on the grounds of the Old Hickory Railroad at 3406 College Street, the club will demonstrate indoor and outdoor model trains in all scales. The club moved to Jackson in 2003 and expanded into a second building in 2010. The added space has enabled the club’s 33 members to build five major indoor layouts and two outdoor layouts, including one of only two publicly accessible garden railroads in Louisiana. The club is unique in operating all popular American scales: G, O, HO, N, S and Z. Most clubs operate only a single scale. The Open House is free and open to everyone. Before or after their visit to the trains, guests can visit the annual Jackson Antiques Festival and enjoy lunch at the Festival’s Gumbo Kitchen on nearby Charter Street, as well as visit the historic open houses in Jackson. Or get takeout from the Gumbo Kitchen and enjoy a meal in the club’s covered outdoor picnic areas while enjoying the trains. For more information go to www.greaterbrrailroaders.com. What the town of Zachary formally knew as the Sno Depot now sits the Parish Crawfish drive-thru. Parish Crawfish is founded by three Acadia Parish natives…Doug Keaton, and brothers Mike and Mitch Shoffiett of Shoffiett Farms. Their farm, located in Jefferson Davis Parish, consists of 300 acres of crawfish ponds. These ponds are naturally formed by using resources such as conventional rice that is native to Louisiana. The rice that is grown in these fields is solely dedicated to the crawfish crop itself. These fields have no chemicals or pesticides that are traditionally used by rice farmers. The fields are irrigated using water from a deep well that accesses aquifer water. “The crawfish crop is as natural as it can get in this day and age,” says Shoffiett. The trio decided to open a drive-thru crawfish restaurant in effort to appeal to a community that did not have accessibility to pond raised crawfish. “We as owners want to have the upper hand with the best quality product going to our drive thru. As partners with the farm, I assure all of our best crawfish production will be brought to our drive thru before sold anywhere else,” says Keaton. “We are excited and thrilled about being in the town of Zachary. Our goal is to thrive as a local business in the Zachary community for years to come. Parish Crawfish will be serving not only crawfish, but boiled shrimp and crabs. We additionally offer sides such as potatoes, corn, mushrooms, onions, and everyone’s favorite, Frey Sausage from Acadia Parish.”

West Feliciana Hospital Offers High-quality Imaging to Area Residents For years, many local residents took it upon themselves to drive to Baton Rouge or New Orleans for high-quality imaging services like CT scans or MRIs. Today, West Feliciana Hospital Imaging Department offers local residents some of the most advanced technology and state-ofthe-art diagnostic equipment that is on par, if not better than, what you’ll find in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The hospital also partners with Woman’s Hospital to provide 3D mammography services on site. The following is an overview of imaging services and state-of-the-art equipment. General X-Ray Services: The hospital features a Shumadzu RADSpeed Pro EDGE, which is the top-of-the-line General Radiography System, as well as a FluoroSpeed 300 Digital R/F System for fluoroscopy. Each of these state-of-theart machines showcases a modern design that considers all users in a diversity of situations, making them ideal for a wide variety of examinations. MRI: West Feliciana Hospital’s cut-
ting-edge Hitachi Echelon Oval MRI combines the most comfortable patient experience possible with the highest quality diagnostics. The Oval is the widest MRI system on the market providing space where patients need it most. With its feetfirst imaging capabilities, the Oval also allows greater freedom for positioning. All of these features combine to accommodate larger patients and decrease claustrophobia. Ultrasound: The hospital’s GE Logiq E9 XDclear 2.0 Ultrasound system offers one of the highest level of imaging yet. Used as a crucial tool for obstetrics and to examine vital organs, blood vessels, thyroid, kidney, or gallbladder, it provides physicians information to
guide decisions that enhance clinical confidence. 128 Slice CT Scan: The Hitachi SCENERIA 128 Slice ultra low dose CT scanner offers the most advanced clinical capabilities and unique features to provide a notable more comfortable experience for all patients, from pediatric, to oncological, to elderly. The scanner combines the lowest radiation exposure possible with the highest image quality and fastest scan times. 3D Mammography: West Feliciana Hospital partners with Woman’s Hospital to offer 2D and 3D yearly wellness screening mammograms in house. This new technology is ideal for diagnosing breast cancer in its earliest stages in all
women often detecting breast cancer as early as two years before a lump can be felt. Bone Density Testing: A bone density test determines if you have osteoporosis—a disorder characterized by bones that are fragile and more likely to break. Bone density tests use lower radiation doses than bone scans and are confined to a small area. This testing method is also quicker and less complicated than a bone scan. West Feliciana Hospital provides patients and their physicians immediate electronic access to test images. Digital images can also be copied to a CD, giving doctors a permanent record that can be accessed easily and quickly. However, at a physician’s request, the hospital can still print x-rays on film. Diagnostic Imaging at West Feliciana Hospital is conveniently located just inside the Main Entrance. For more information, to schedule an appointment, or for questions about a procedure, contact the hospital at 225635-2443 or visit www.wfph.org

OBITUARY
David Warren Whitlock Jr.
David Warren Whitlock Jr., 76, was called home by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 24, 2018. He passed away peacefully at his home after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by his loving wife, Sharon, of 51 years and his family. David, affectionally known as “Dickie” by his family was born in Natchez, Mississippi and was a resident of Zachary, Louisiana. David spent his cherished childhood memories in Natchez and Bude Mississippi. He graduated from Baker High School and studied Electrical Engineering at LA Tech and LSU. David joined the Marines in 1964 and participated in the largest amphibious landing since WWII known as “Operation Steel Pike One” in Spain. He was honorably discharged in 1970 with the rank of Staff Sergeant and was the Weapons Platoon leader. David was a member of First Baptist Church in Zachary and the Plains Masonic Lodge #135. Electrical work of any kind was his passion. He had a work ethic like no other. In his younger days, Dave installed power lines in Bunkie, LA. Later, he was employed by Plantation Pipeline and worked in Collins, MS where he met his wife. David started his own electrical business in Zachary and finished out his career work-
ing 26 years for Georgia Pacific and Tembec paper mills as an Electrical and Instrumentation Supervisor. He did consulting work with TreCon after his retirement. His greatest passion was spending quality time with his grandchildren. His 3 beautiful angels couldn’t have asked for a more caring and loving Paw-Paw who whole heartedly gave of his time and loved every minute of it. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, projects, and spending time with his family who he so lovingly took care of and provided for through all of his years.
His kind and compassionate soul touched all who crossed paths with him. David often lent a helping hand to others in need and will be greatly missed by family and friends. David is survived by his loving wife, Sharon McGee Whitlock; son, David “Dennis” Warren Whitlock III of Zachary; two daughters, Tammy Mendoza and husband Richard of Gulf Breeze, Florida and Cathy Poole and husband Brad of Lafayette; three granddaughters, Kate Poole, Cameron Poole, and Gabriella Mendoza; and sister, Julie Nance and husband Fred of Prairieville. David is preceded in death by his father, David Warren Whitlock, Sr.; and mother, Irene Ponder Whitlock. Pallbearers are David (Dennis) Whitlock III, Brad Poole, Richard Mendoza, Fred Nance, Denny Efferson, Jimmy Esch, Jamie Harmon, and John Williams. Honorary Pallbearers are Jimmy Kimball, Luke Beard, and John Parker. Relatives and friends were invited to join the family for the visitation at Baker Funeral Home, 6401 Groom Road, Baker, Wednesday, February 28, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The visitation continued at Baker
Funeral, Thursday, March 1, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. until the service at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Wayne Barnes officiated the service. The family would like to extend their thanks to Hospice in His Care and to Dr. Swayze Rigby for providing care during his illness. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Disabled American Veterans. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7

BREC Begins Summer Camp Registration BREC offers summer camp registration for East Baton Rouge Parish residents beginning Saturday, March 24 from 9 a.m.-noon and on Tuesday, April 3 at 3 p.m. for out-of-parish residents. Parents or guardians may register in person at the facility of their choice or online at webtrac.brec.org for all locations this summer. From recreation and theatre to animals and science, there is a camp for children with varied interests. Summer camp dates, times, ages and fees vary per camp. This summer, BREC offers summer sports camp, golf camp, extreme sports camp, exclusive recreation camps for children with mental and developmental disabilities, conservation camps, outdoor adventure camps, recreation camps and tennis camps. BREC also offers special interest summer camps at the Baton Rouge Zoo, Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, Farr Park Equestrian Center, Highland Road Park Observatory, Independence Park Theatre, Magnolia Mound Plantation and BREC Art Camp at Womack Park. This summer for the second year, BREC in partnership with the Big Buddy Program will also offer
Teen Get Out for teenagers ages 12-15. This camp will allow teens to choose what they want to explore this summer and impact their community while doing it. Weekly activities will include: teambuilding games, cultural, visual and performing arts and career exploration field trips with hands-on experience. Beginning March 24 from 9 a.m.-noon, East Baton Rouge Parish residents can visit the site where they want to attend camp and register in person. All camp sites will be open for walk-in registrants until spaces are filled. Payment can be made using cash, check, money order or Visa, MasterCard or Discover credit/debit card. Deposits and financial assistance are available on-site. Registration for Camp Sunshine, for campers with mental and developmental disabilities, must be completed in person and accompanied by an assessment. East Baton Rouge Parish residents can register at ALL locations through WebTrac, our online registration system at webtrac.brec. org. Patrons are able to register online from their computer, tablet or smartphone. They can register using a Visa, MasterCard or Dis-
cover credit/debit card at webtrac. brec.org. Full payment is required at time of registration, no deposits or financial assistance available online. If you have never registered online, BREC recommends that parents or guardians make a login request on brec.org/webtrac at least two days prior to registration. The system will ask registrants to set up a household on Webtrac. This is an easy process and must be completed 48 hours before registration begins on March 24. In order to complete successful online registration, parents or guardians who have registered online before should know their user ID and password ahead of time. If registrants cannot remember this information, they may use the “Having Trouble” link and click on “Forgot Password.” If registrants are not sure if they have an account, they can send an email to webtrac@brec. org and a BREC staff member will respond as soon as possible. For more information or a complete list of all BREC summer camps, pick up a copy of the BREC Summer Playbook at any BREC facility or visit brec.org/summercamp.

In fact, Dr. O’Laughlin’s brother faced hearing challenges as a child, and she witnessed firsthand how hearing loss effects every aspect of daily living. police organizations in your prayers. “Chris was a hard worker and a dedicated fireman and a family man, he believed very much in his family,” Fire Chief Danny Kimble said at Tuesday morning press conference. By Tuesday afternoon, the tears and sorrow turned to anger as it became know that Albert Franklin, 33, and Ashley Chaney, 30, were both arrested in the murder of Lawton Franklin, 4979 St. Louis St., Zachary, was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of first-degree murder, hit and run, simple criminal damage to property and fugitive from Zachary police. Chaney, 2424 Toledo St., Baker, was booked on obstruction of justice. Just three months ago, an outraged Zachary police chief asked why the Albert Franklin was being arrested over and over by his officers, only to be set free again. The WAFB Investigative team produced an in-depth report on Franklin last December, showing his numerous arrests on drugs and weapons charges and the seemingly revolving door he found at the jail during his numerous arrests. In the most recent of those arrests, Judge Trudy White drastically reduced Franklin’s bond from $88,000 to just $9,000, their investigative report exposed. Franklin quickly posted bond and was back on the streets again. Lawton, 41, died after he was hit by a U-Haul truck driven by Franklin in the parking lot of the Baker Walmart. He and another Zachary police officer were working undercover to arrest Franklin, who was suspected of using an AR-15 to hit his girlfriend in the face, according to Zachary Police Chief David McDavid. Funeral services for Lawton were held at noon Saturday, March 17, at the Zachary United Methodist Church, 4205 Church St. Burial followed at 488 McKnight Road in Clinton.
