This Sunday is Easter Sunday. It is a time for us to reflect as Christians on the gift the Lord Jesus gave all of us who believe in Him. It is very easy for us to neglect the importance and meaning of this holiday, and become absorbed with the commercial aspects of candy, bunnies and eggs. Don’t misunderstand my intent. As a father of four fast growing children, there is nothing wrong with the Easter Bunny and celebration, but I believe that it is important to understand the importance of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as central to the Christian faith. Without the resurrection, our Christian faith would be just wishful thinking, no better than human philosophies and speculative religions. In fact, the noted seventeenth-century philosopher John Locke, some of whose ideas were incorporated into the Declaration of Independence, wrote, “Our Savior’s resurrection is truly of great importance in Christianity, so great that His being or not being the Messiah stands or falls with it.” More so than Christmas or any other holiday, Easter is what Christianity is all about. Without the resurrection there is no hope. With it, even death has no sting. Jesus spoke to his disciples about His sufferings and death: “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again” (Mark 8:31). Paul knew that without the resurrection our salvation could not have been possible (1 Corinthians 15). He was also convinced a person couldn’t be saved without believing in the resurrection of Jesus: “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved” (Romans 10:9). It is important to remember that Paul, the other apostles, and every leader in the early church continually proclaimed Christ’s resurrection as the culmination of His ministry. Those men were so captivated by the significance of the resurrection that they could not help but preach it. And that should be our attitude today. The good news of Christ’s birth is only trumped by the great news of his death, burial and resurrection. This Holy Week, take some extra time to reflect on the greatest gift God ever gave us, His son, and through Him eternal life.

Council Meets With A Somber Tone, Tackles Zoning Request By Mike Gennaro
The Mayor and Council met for their regularly scheduled meeting last Tuesday, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers. After the invocation, the council took a moment of silence to remember the first ever Zachary Police officer to be killed in the line of duty. The Mayor’s opening remarks were somber, reflecting on the tragic and untimely death of Zachary Deputy Fire Chief and reserve officer with Zachary Police Department, Christopher Lawton. “Chris made 20 years with the city in 2018. He epitomized what it means to be a public servant. When you go into the fire service or police department, it’s not about the money. You do it for
the love…Zachary is unique for a special reason, and it’s people like Chris Lawton that makes Zachary special.” Amrhein went on to mention that the three recent deaths of city employees in 2018 is hard for a city with already limited personnel to absorb, which was perhaps an invocation for more community members to step up and follow the example of servant leadership. “No Signs, No People Coming and Going” Conditional use variance requests dominated the business of the evening, some being more easily decided. Of the most controversial of the meeting was local business person Mr. Rafael Nowicki’s request to continue to operate a home
based business, Biomedical Support Services, in a house that is no longer his primary residence. Nowicki began his business out of the Jane Marie home. Business began to grow and he moved away, continuing to operate his business out of the home, where the rooms are now used as office space for four employees. Many of Nowicki’s neighbors took the podium to testify that they were not bothered by the four cars and one maintenance vehicle that are regularly parked outside the office. One neighbor mentioned “I didn’t know there was a business run out of there. I wish some of the other neighbors would keep up their property like Mr. Nowicki. His landscaping is professionally done every
seven days.” Yet, the issue came to the council’s attention when a private citizen complained. “The UDC allows a home office in residential suburban areas… He doesn’t reside in the Jane Marie property…There is no signage, no customers, no people coming and going…He has been doing this for 18 years. This is taking place in Fennwood. He employs local citizens with good paying jobs with benefits,” argued Graham Arnold in defense of Nowicki. “There is a man running a mechanic shop down the street. That’s the dilemma, where do you draw the line? I guarantee you if he continues to work on cars, fix them up and sell

New xCup Drug Testing Now Available at FASTLane Urgent Care MARCH WELLNESS
FASTLane After Hours Urgent Care has expanded its occupational medicine services and now offers drug testing for 10 illicit drugs in one easy test. The xCup urine screen allows employers to expand their test menu to electronically screen for up to 10 of the most commonly abused drugs. Located at 19900 Old Scenic Hwy in Zachary, FASTLane also offers both Non-DOT and DOT drug and alcohol testing, as well as eScreen and DISA drug tests. Scheduled testing is available Mon-Fri- from 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. by calling Lane Regional Medical Center Service Coordination at 1-888-977-3319. “Drug and alcohol testing continue to be a critical part of the hiring process for most employers because they create significant safety
and health hazards,” says corporate health consultant Liz Pardi. “It also can lead to additional costs in the form of healthcare claims, especially short-term disability claims.” Common reasons employers implement alcohol and drug testing are to: • Deter employees from abusing alcohol and drugs • Prevent hiring individuals who use illegal drugs • Be able to identify early and appropriately refer employees who have drug and/or alcohol problems • Provide a safe workplace for employees • Protect the general public and instill consumer confidence that employees are working safely • Comply with State laws or Federal regulations

Joshua Brumley Hits The Trail For His LifeLong Ambition… Zachary resident Joshua Brumley, developed a love for the outdoors at an early age. Being an Eagle Scout, he has hiked hundreds of miles across the U.S., including various sections of the Appalachian Trail. From the first time he heard about the Appalachian Trail, he knew that attempting a “thru-hike” was something he wanted to do. A “thru-hike” is hiking the entire trail from Georgia to Maine in a single season. The Appalachian trail stretches more than 2,000 miles along the U.S. East Coast, and runs from Springer Mountain, Georgia, to Mt. Katahdin, Maine. It is one of the longest marked trails in the country. The trail cuts through 14 states, including New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, and is said to take 5 million steps and 5-7 months to complete. “I graduated from LSU a couple of years ago, and recently made the decision to relocate to Nashville. While other people are having to take time off from school and quit jobs to hike the AT, everything just lined up perfectly to enable me to fulfill my dream.” Joshua will began his journey on March 12 from Georgia. You can follow his progress on Instagram at @brumstheword. Joshua is the son of Kathi Brumley, who serves as Mayor David Amrhein’s secretary at the City of Zachary.
office only out of the home for a catering business, all prep and cooking to be done off site. Genko MGMT. was approved for what city planner Amy Schulze called “a very nice entrance sign in the entrance median” of the Meadow View Subdivision that would be larger than normal. The Council did make a motion to table the issue of Frances Barton’s request for conditional use of her home based business to manufacture hair care products at Avenue C, citing potential fire hazards. Zachary’s new PJ’s Coffee loca-
tion, which opened with record setting visitors, according to David Gaines, requested conditional use to possibly serve beer and wine at night. “It did come favorably out of planning and zoning,” said Schulze. Councilman Ben Cavin added, “We have very specific standards, and this adheres to all of those.” On a final note, the council rolled the property tax rate forward to 5.48 mills, which is the equivalent of the current rate, thus increasing the amount of revenue the city receives annually.
