As we approach Memorial Day 2014, at least some of our attention will be directed back to the “greatest generation” who endured the challenges of the years of WWII. Jessie Spears, a fixture and a leader in the Zachary Community for generations, is a member of that “greatest generation.” “I was drafted in early 1945 and sent to Camp Crowder near Joplin, Missouri,” Jessie Spears told the Zachary Post. “It was a much different world back in 1945 than it is here today in America.” Spears was also quite different from most other black men in Louisiana in 1945, as he had earned a high school diploma from Southern Lab High School in Scotlandville. “It wasn’t easy for a black kid to

Publishers Note: The following is an interview the Zachary Post conducted with Jesse Spears several months ago about his life and service to the Zachary community.

“I was drafted in early 1945 and sent to Camp Crowder near Joplin, Missouri,” Jesse Spears told the Zachary Post. “It was a much different world back in 1945 than it is here today in America.” Spears was also quite different Jesse Spears passed away Monday, April 6. Spears was a beloved from most other black men in Louifigure in the Zachary community for many decades. He was instru- siana in 1945, as he had earned a mental in the development of Zachary Community Schools in the high school diploma from Southern 1990s and helped build a strong bridge in the community during Lab High School in Scotlandville. “It wasn’t easy for a black kid to school integration in the 1970s. “Fortunately for me, the railroad track ran right beside my house in Zachary. In the 1940s, two trains a day went into Baton Rouge and two trains came north on the Illinois Central. I would catch the 5:30 a.m. train into Scotlandville and then the 5:30 p.m. northbound train home every afternoon. I thought I would graduate after the 11th grade, but they added another year to get a diploma.” Apparently, the engineers on the southbound morning train took a liking to Jesse and his determination to get a high school diploma. If he missed the boarding at the train depot on Main Street in Zachary, the engineer would stop the train at the New Weiss Road crossing to let Jesse hop aboard the southbound train. Americana YMCA Healthy Kids Day on April 25

On Saturday, April 25, the Americana YMCA is holding a free community event to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active. YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day®, the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families, features activities such as: games, healthy cooking demonstrations, health screenings and other fun activities to motivate and teach families how to develop a healthy routine at home. YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, celebrated at nearly 1,300 Ys across the country, aims to get more kids moving and learning, so they can keep up the habit all summer long – a critical out-of-school time for kids’ health. When kids are out of school, they can face hurdles – or gaps – that prevent them from reaching their full potential, related to hunger, water safety, learning, safe spaces to play, and health.

Each year, the Y helps over 9 million youth nationwide “hop the gap” and achieve more, providing a safe place to learn, stay healthy and build friendships. “The Y is so much more than sports, swimming, gymnastics and a place for kids to hang out. We support families in their efforts to instill healthy habits at home,” said Kristen Hogan, Marketing Director, YMCA of the Capital Area. “We know that it can sometimes feel like a challenge. So at Healthy Kids Day, we’ll encourage kids to stay physically and intellectually active all summer long, and give families tips they can easily replicate at home. It’s free and open to the community.” In celebration of YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the Y offers the following tips to help families develop healthy habits: - Try, try, repeat – There are many great tasting fruits and veg-

etables that many kids have never heard of, let alone tried. Grab a new fruit or vegetable and encourage everyone in the family to try at least a bite. - Families at play for an hour a day – From walking to gardening, or swimming to shooting hoops, make playful movement a part of your family’s day. To get 60 minutes of moderate activity throughout your day, just add 10 minutes here and 15 minutes there. - Foster a passion for reading – Read to and with your kids. Help children read at every age and every stage of their development. - Make sleep a priority – Doctors recommend 10-12 hours of sleep a day for children ages 5-12

and 7-8 hours per night for adults. Sleep plays a critical role in maintaining our healthy immune system, metabolism, mood, memory, learning, and other vital functions. Americana YMCA Healthy Kids Day is free and open to the public: Americana YMCA: 10 am – 1 pm; fun sports activities, obstacle course, arts and science activity, story time, nutrition and cooking lessons, stretching and yoga lessons; tennis and aquatics games, door prizes and more; our local police and fire department will be present as well. 4200 Liberty Way, (225) 654-9622 For more information visit ymcabr.org

Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska. “Although WWII was officially over by the time we got to the Army base in the Aleutian Islands, we renovated the base and brought it up to operational standards,” Spears noted. “When one war ends, that just means that you are getting ready for the next war.” “Supposedly, on the Aleutians, we were the first line of defense against the Russians. I do know that it was very cold on the island during the winter and a lot of mosquitos during the short summer season. When it came time to either re-enlist or be discharged, I was sent back to Fort Stoneman in San Francisco where I decided not to re-enlist.” “After I got back home in 1947, I decided to enroll at Southern University,” Spears remembered. “Every time I went over there to register, there was a big long line of people. Standing in lines in the Army had really done me in, so I decided to leave and come back later in the day to register at Southern.” “That happened for about three straight days so I never got enrolled at Southern. An opportunity came up for me to enroll in Benny Harrison’s Tailoring School through a Vo-Tech program, so I did that. After finishing the Tailoring School, I went to work for York Tailors in downtown Baton Rouge. I didn’t stay with the tailoring business long because I couldn’t make much money. You got paid by the pieces of work you did, so if there wasn’t a lot of work every day you didn’t make much money that day.”

Spears’ next employment was with Kindric Building Supply in Zachary on Main Street. He drove a stake body 1950 era model truck for them for about six years. From there, Spears went to work doing construction work at Ethyl Corporation, which lasted about two years before he was laid off.

“After I got laid off from Ethyl, I went to work running a Cooperative Service station in Baker,”

Spears recalled. “It was owned by people who were members of the Co-op. The work was seven days a week and no less than 12 hours a day.” “When I got the opportunity to go to work at the Copolymer plant, I jumped at the chance. I worked there from August 20, 1959, until 1989 when I retired at 62 years of age after 30 years of service. Integration happened during my tenure at Copolymer. In 1963, I became the first black operator in the plant. I had been wrestling 90 pound bales of rubber, but I figured out quick that at 150 pounds, I wasn’t going to last long doing that.” Although Spears kept up a dedicated work ethic before and during his 30 years at Copolymer, he was very involved in Zachary Community activities. In 1959, Spears and a dozen other young black men formed the Zachary Men’s Club, which is still going strong 55 years later. “Our first goal with the men’s club was to provide recreational opportunities for our youth,” Spears explained. “We have been blessed in accomplishing that goal. We bought land on Rollins Road and helped set up the Zachary Food Bank. During all those years we have helped provide scholarships to kids wanting to go to college.” In 1969, Spears made his first of three unsuccessful campaigns for a seat on the Zachary Board of Alder-

men. In 1969, the Federal Government also issued directives to integrate the Zachary School System. In 1950, EBR School System had built a new middle school named Northwestern. It initially only went to the 10th grade but by 1955, Northwestern had its first graduating class of 37 seniors. “At that time, I was President of the Northwestern all black high school PTA group,” Spears, who has been married to Virginia Morrison Spears for nearly 54 years pointed out. “We all came together and formed a committee develop a plan to make sure we handled the integration in sensible manner.” “Winston McVea retired as principal of Zachary High School that year so Jerry Boudreaux was brought in as the new principal of Zachary High. In our Committee, we decided that we were only going to have three schools, one elementary, one middle school and a high school. This would help the kids to get to know everyone in their age

group each year from elementary through the 12th grade.” In the late 1990s when Zachary decided to become an independent school district, Spears was right in the middle of that successful effort. “We were doing a lot of phone calls and emails back and forth with the people in Washington DC, but we were not making much progress so I suggested that a group of us just go to Washington and sit down face to face with the people who could make something happen,” Spears said. “Our U.S. Senators helped open a lot of the doors we needed opened. When we got back from our meetings in Washington, it wasn’t long until we got approval.” Spears was appointed to the first Zachary Community Independent School District Board by then Governor Mike Foster.

BREC, YMCA Team Up to Promote Summer Swimming Safety

Six hundred children and adults will get free swimming lessons and classroom instruction in water safety this spring thanks to a pilot program sponsored by BREC, the YMCA and the East Baton Rouge Parish. In 2014, the sports governing body USA Swimming released statistics indicating that 69 percent of African-American children have little or no swimming ability. That same year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that African-Americans drown at a rate 20 percent higher than whites. According to both studies, parental fear and lack of parental encouragement were the top two reasons children and parents gave for not swimming regardless of ethnicity, a news release said. Studies like those and recent drownings in East Baton Rouge Parish spurred BREC, the YMCA and the local school system to work together to launch a pilot water safety program in EBR schools this spring. The program will be more comprehensive than summer swimming lessons and will include classroom and pool-based instruction. It also will be aimed at adults and children. “Since joining BREC, I have spent a lot of time at Liberty Lagoon Water Park and our swimming pools, and it concerns me to see the large number of children who rely on a life jacket when they are in the pool,” BREC Superintendent Carolyn McKnight said. “Each summer we work with the YMCA to enroll

as many children as possible into our Learn to Swim programs, but this year, we want to begin a more in-depth program which will help both adults and children become comfortable in the water.” “The Y encourages all children and adults to learn how to swim. It’s never too late. Basic swimming skills and water safety practices save lives every day,” YMCA of the Capital Area President/CEO Bob Jacobs said. “It is exciting when organizations can collaborate and create partnerships that help meet our community’s needs to ensure all families have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.” The program will target 600 children and adults this spring. All participants will be recommended by the EBR school system, and the classroom-based portion of the program will be held in schools. Sessions will run 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the age and ability of participants. Transportation will be provided for the swim lesson portion of the program, and both BREC and YMCA pools will be used. “This partnership will go a long way in making the ability to swim a reality for our students, as well as saving lives and providing a safe recreational activity for them to enjoy the numerous natural bodies of water contained within our state.” The program came about through the assistance of a community leader who serves on the East Baton Rouge School Board as well

as the BREC Commission. “As a new commissioner with BREC, I am so pleased to be a part of this collaboration that will help save children’s lives and enhance the health of families in our parish,” Evelyn Ware-Jackson said. “I would like to see this pilot grow to a point that we have competitive swim teams across the district, allowing our kids yet another opportunity to strive towards excellence.” The pilot program will be free of charge and funded through a $25,000 grant the YMCA of the Capital Area secured through the YMCA of the USA, as well as $25,000 from BREC. Once the pilot program is complete, BREC and

the YMCA will work to expand the program into school systems across the parish. “We want to ensure that children across the parish are able to enjoy the beautiful lakes, rivers and swimming facilities in East Baton Rouge without fear,” McKnight said. “Our hope is that no other family will have to suffer a tragedy that could have been prevented by a program like this one.” In addition to the Water Safety Program, BREC and the YMCA will continue offering Learn to Swim lessons at a very affordable rate for anyone who wants to register. In 2014, 1,143 children completed those lessons.
