ZCSB Honors Annual Students of the Year

By Mike Gennaro The Zachary Community School Board met for their 6 p.m. work session followed by their regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. The spotlight was on future leaders as Students of the Year honorees were in attendance along with their families and some of their teachers and administrators showing support. At the invocation, prayers were requested for board member Heidi Vessel’s mother. After the pledge, Superintendent Scott Devillier welcomed honorees saying, “These young people are chosen by the folks at their school, and they go through a process. I’m very proud of each and every one of them, but we have so so many students in our district that could be here tonight.” Students are chosen by school committees made up of staff and peers that give testimony to the characters of the honorees. Each student was honored with an award and their principal was given a chance to speak about them. First to be honored was Collier Rhodes of the Zachary Early Learning Center who was described by his principal, Ms. Kelli Day, as “bright and inquisitive… which he gets from his mother.” He was also described as an explorer on the playground, an architect of blocks, kind hearted, and sweet to everyone he meets,” which gave the audience a chuckle. Collier’s father was also in attendance.

Next, Hamlin Hess of Northwestern Elementary, Principal Day mentioned that he is “a very well mannered child, a leader that is always willing to help a friend in need.” Principal Marangos spoke for Honoree Roma Thomas from Rollins Place Elementary, “Roma is such a delight at school, great grades, super inquisitive, compassion for classmates, super respectful, just happy, just smiles, brings sunshine into her class at school.” Honoring Zachary Elementary School’s Chloe Wedblad, Principal

Thomas said, “They all have one thing in common; they are well rounded. At this age, they start learning a lot about friends. She doesn’t like conflict; she defuses that. Citizenship, she helps friends and adults in need.” Copper Mill Elementary Principal Angela Cassard had a great deal to say about Gracie Landreneau, who along with making A’s and B’s, was described as someone who “loves school.” “When we had the women’s history night, Gracie recognized her teacher, Ms. Jones.” See SCHOOL BOARD on page 2

Zachary High Holds 3rd Annual Special Prom

By Nick Gremillion, Special from WAFB

Zachary High School held its third annual prom for special needs students last Monday. The event was a smaller version of Zachary High’s regular prom, which was held almost a month ago. This unique school dance symbolizes unity and friendship between special education and regular education students. About 20 students, ranging from ninth to twelfth grade from the high school’s special education department dressed up to dance the afternoon away at the academic-athletic

SCHOOL BOARD continued from page 1

Next, Northwestern Middle School Principal Debbie Brian honored Jabari Johnson adding, “You know that you have the right person when you have the unanimous vote of the staff and their peers.” Jabari is involved in Beta club, head start, and multiple sports and is said to be a standout in the area of science in math, with over a 4.0 GPA. Brian went on to respectfully mention, with Jabari’s earlier permission, that he lost his father recently. “You really see what is inside a person when they go through a hardship.” Finally, from Zachary High School, Olivia Hurst was honored, and she gave a small speech thanking her parents and the district. “I’ve been here my entire life. I just love Zachary so much, the teachers, the administration. I’m just so thankful.” Principal Tim Jordan was present and described her jokingly as “always late for class” among her other outstanding qualities like being “a quiet leader, kind, and persistent.” After a brief intermission where the honorees and their families were dismissed, the regular business of the district was conducted. Allyson Russell, the staff Child Nu-

trition Supervisor, requested an adjustment to the school lunch prices for paid student lunches in a much-delayed measure, “I’ve come to ask your permission to raise the paid price by 15 cents.” The prices are now 1.85 which will go up to $2.00, and $2.10, which will move up to $2.25. “That way we could hopefully avoid another increase for the next three years.” The school board members voted for this measure without issue. In the pre-meeting, school board members discussed making minor incremental increases of 5 cents annually, but agreed

with Ms. Russell that such small increases would barely get our district past the required threshold, which is measured by the Paid Lunch Equity Tool. Superintendent Devillier added that the Zachary School district needs to keep up to avoid the general fund subsidizing the food service program by hundreds of thousands per year as it did in the past. The next board meeting will be May 1st. A more notable date according to the superintendent, “The true event, the culmination of everything we are about happens May 17th at the Pete Maravich center. It’s graduation.”

Ernie Lee Cart, 78 years old, passed away on Friday, April 13, 2018. He was born in Basile, Louisiana on February 6, 1940 to Lester and Eva Cart, who raised him and his siblings; Winnie Potts (Cecil), Linda Strahan (Wayne), Esther Toups (Brent) and Gene in a loving, lively and proud Cajun family. Ernie enlisted into the United States Air Force in 1958. After spending his early life in Oakdale, Louisiana where he met and mar-

Ernie began his long-standing career as an Operator at Georgia Pacific in 1968 and retired in 2005. Ernie believed in a hard days’ work and enjoyed life every day. He was thankful for all that he has, he gave unselfishly, helped abundantly, and loved unconditionally. Ernie loved the outdoors, wood working, playing music, and spending time in the kitchen with his with his family over an abundance of food! He was proud of his Cajun heritage and was

actively relearning his first language of Cajun French. Ernie’s love and dedication to his wife was evident to the end and has left behind a legacy to his sons of whom he was so very proud of. Lucky were those of us blessed to have known him, loved him, and been loved by him. He is survived by his wife of 59 beautiful years, Joyce Ann (Boone), his 5 sons and their spouses, Joey & Latrelle (Oudkirk), Greg & Debbie (Bates), David, Todd & Belinda (Limbaugh), Chris & Sarah (Thomas); grandchildren, Alan, Tiffany, Tyler, Brandon, Nick, Josh, Austin, Brody, JR, GiGi, and Jack (who will make his arrival in

This week has been an exciting week for our 2nd grade students. They were able to travel to Rutherford Beach in Cameron Parish to plant Bitter Panicum in the sand along the Gulf of Mexico as part of the restoration project with L.S.U. Coastal Roots. What is Coastal Roots? Students from 2nd grade through high school are taking part in this project to learn about and become environmental stewards of their natural resources by establishing native plant nurseries at their schools. Students are growing native plant seedlings and grass plugs that they will plant in a coastal habitat restoration project in south Louisiana and in Chile, South America. There are currently 50 schools across 21 Louisiana parishes currently participating in the LSU Coastal Roots Program.

PROM

POST Tuesday, April 24, 2018

continued from page 1

center. All of the special needs students were on today’s prom court, and Kevone Washington was crowned prom king. Before the prom, the special education students were treated to a lunch at Walk-Ons, which was one of the sponsors of the event. Other sponsors of the event included the Zachary Knights of Columbus, Pelican State Credit Union, Burk Heroman Florist, and First in Counters. The special education students were joined with their partners from Bronco Buddies, as well as students from the cheerleading and baseball teams. The Bronco Buddies is a program that pairs regular and special education students together at school. Jamie Byrd, a special education teacher and cheerleading coach at Zachary High, explains that the program goes beyond the school’s walls. Regular education students in the program take their special education partners to enjoy events outside of school such as including sporting events, birthday parties, and even playing in the snow. Byrd said the regular education students in the program had the option of leaving an hour early but all opted to stay at the prom with their special needs friends. Ariana Minor, who is a special education twelfth grader at ZHS, said she was so excited for today’s prom had been waiting since last year’s prom ended. She said this year’s prom was “awesome.” Minor said her partner in the Bronco Buddies program is a student named Emma but she enjoys hanging out with everyone in the program. Chayala Magee, who is a special education student in the same grade as Minor, said she was equally excited for Monday’s prom. Magee’s friends in the Bronco Buddies program said Magee had been practicing her dance moves for the special dance. Magee also said she enjoyed the meal before Prom at Walk-Ons. Kenlee McHugh, a regular education senior who joined the program earlier this year, said she helped Byrd and other students with the decorations for Monday’s special event. McHugh and her friends in the Bronco Buddies program wanted to make Monday’s prom just as fun as the school prom they attended on March 24.

“I think it means a lot to them. We want them to have the same experience as we had at our prom because they (the special needs students) mean so much to us. We love them,” McHugh said. Grace Dry, another senior in the program, said she was inspired to

a good service opportunity.” When asked about Monday’s dance, Dry said she was more excited about it than the other prom last month. “This one is more fun,” Dry and a chorus of her friends said.

3rd Annual Zachary Maypole Celebration Join us at the Historic Zachary Depot on Main Street in Downtown Zachary for a morning of gardening, shopping, music and arts on Saturday, May 5th from 9 a.m. – noon at the Zachary Maypole Celebration. The celebration will begin with the Official Maypole Dance performed by the Children’s Moving Company behind the Zachary Depot. Visitors can enjoy live music throughout the morning, face-painting, shopping at the numerous vendor booths, children’s games by BREC, demonstrations on soap carving and a performance by the Southern and Louisiana Vintage Dancers at 11 a.m. – noon. We are excited this year to have a special appearance of this talented dance troupe which performs ballroom dances from the 1800s in period costume as a presentation of living history. Dancers will be dressed in attire from the 1820s, and there will be several audience participation dances for the public to take part in. No partner or experience is necessary, just join in the fun. Just in time for Mother’s Day, the first 100 children are invited to paint a flower on a canvas as a take-home Mother’s Day Gift, assisted by the Zachary High School Art Class. Cub Scout Pack #72 will be on hand, working on their service project planting flowers behind the Zachary Depot. Tours of the Historical Depot will be on-going during the celebration and children will have an opportunity to “blow the train whistle” while on the tour. Drop by the armillary sundial sphere, located in the Boudreaux Memorial Gardens behind the Depot and learn how to tell time, as the astronomers did in the 1600s.
