Publisher’s Notebook A Walk Along Main Street By Daniel Duggan, Publisher
Another School Year is Upon Us
Parents and teachers, are you ready for back to school? It is hard to believe that the summer is almost over, but alas, now is the time of the year to begin preparing our students in the community to get ready for the 2019-20 school year. I have four kids myself in the Zachary School System, all at different schools, and I know how hard it can be to get prepared. Each year our staff at the Zachary Post try to pull together as much information as possible to assist in a smooth transition from summer activities to the rigor of a strong educational environment. I hope the information contained herein this Back to School Issue of the Zachary Post will benefit our local students and parents alike.
From the Desk of the Superintendent... Dear Zachary Community,
It’s hard to believe that summer is coming to an end. Our students return to school on Thursday, August 8th, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome them back! Our team has been diligently preparing for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year. Each year, the Zachary Community School District chooses a theme that focuses on the dedication that we have to the children in our district. For the 2019-2020 school year, our theme will be, “Next Level: Educating and Inspiring our Future.” Education is not just about passing along knowledge from our teachers to our students; it is also about in-
spiring positive outcomes and the fostering of ideas. As a community, education should be our major investment in the future of our students. When we focus our efforts on teaching, preparing, and inspiring every student, every day, we are getting an excellent return on the investment that will grow for years to come. Our dedicated team of educators will continue to plant and water seeds to prepare our students for life in a global world, both in and out of the classroom. Our students have continued to excel and succeed in academics, the arts, and athletics. As Superintendent, I want to sustain and grow our community partnership. We are extremely grateful for your sup-

port and involvement; and we hope that you will continue to be engaged in our activities, events, and in the lives of all of our students. I look forward to welcoming back our incredible team of educators and our amazing students. It is my hope that you will join us in assisting each and every student in reaching his or her maximum potential through high-quality instruction and good stewardship of community resources. Let’s be deliberate in embracing our theme, “Next Level: Educating and Inspiring our Future,” so all our students will have the opportunity to excel at the optimum level. Sincerely,
Scott Devillier

Zachary Schools Again Tops in State in LEAP Proficiency
The Zachary Community School District remained #1 again on LEAP standardized tests, collectively showing high mastery in English, math and social studies, according to results released last Thursday. Zachary schools had the highest percentage of its students who achieved mastery level in three subjects given during the spring Louisiana Educational Assessment Program tests. The top-ranked district north of Baton Rouge saw three of four schools improve in the rate of mastery. LEAP tests were given in grades 3-8 in April and May, as well as in five high school subjects taken in all high school grades. Students in fifth grade up take the tests exclusively on computers while students in third and fourth grade can take them with paper and pencil. Students statewide did the best in English, followed by math and then social studies. Scores improved slightly in English and math, but

there was no change in social studies. The results released Thursday don’t include science. Those results aren’t scheduled for release until August. In 2015, Louisiana unveiled new educational standards. As part of that shift, the state began expecting
schools to shoot not just for the basic achievement level, which used to be considered grade level, but to aim higher and achieve mastery or above in tested subjects. This year’s annual testing is the fifth in which schools have been tasked with meeting the higher standard.

Community to Hold Linda Wicker’s Legacy Sale to Benefit Mission Trip
Friends and members of the late Linda Nunnery Wicker will be holding a Legacy Sale on July 25th, 26th & 27th from 7 a.m. -7 p.m. and August 8th, 9th & 10th 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. at 3305 Landmor Drive in Slaughter. Mrs. Linda was born on July 19, 1943 and went to be with our Lord on June 23, 2019 at her home in Slaughter. Linda Nunnery & Basil Wicker met as first graders back in Smithdale, MS, where they both grew up. But they did not start dating until they were in junior college. After surrendering to the ministry at the age of 9, finishing school & completing seminary, Basil went on to become a preacher. Rev & Mrs. Basil Wicker were married on January 24, 1964. God called them to pastor at Slaughter First Baptist Church in September of 1969. Mrs. Linda had a Masters Degree in music and taught piano & voice lessons for many years to
Although they were never blessed with children of their own, they certainly have many children through their extended family at Slaughter FBC. In fact, on June 9th a day of celebration was held in their honor for 50 years of service at Slaughter. The date had been moved up to June from September, at her request, due to Mrs. Linda’s declining health. Mrs. Linda had a heart for children and for missions. She spent more than 50 years caring about & giving in support of missions. It was her wish that a “sale of the many various items she collected through the years be held in her memory to benefit a specific mission need.
The Mission - Corey and Amanda Spinks are both from Slaughter, Louisiana, and grew up in the youth group at First Baptist Church of Slaughter, which is their home and sending church. They have been married for 10 years and have three children Keller-9, Kyndall-7, Houston-6). After hearing about the #NoPlaceLeft Coalition and multiplication among people all over the world in 2016, they knew the Lord wanted them to stop living for self, to uproot their family, and make His name known among the nations full time. They received some missionary training in Atlanta, GA in 2016. In early 2017, God led them to Charlotte, NC, for a season to learn by doing among many refugees and immigrants, where they worked to see disciples and churches multiplied for Gods glory. Recently, they have joined a team in Europe to work mong over 8 million people (98% of which are considered lost) in a large city. They are helping to implement a discipleship and church planting strategy known as 4 Fields of Kingdom Growth. They must raise all of their own financial support. They are praying for individuals and families to partner with them through monthly financial support. They also have expenses forvisas, travel, etc and are prayerfully asking for businesses and churches to help with those needs.
