Council Approves Final Design for New Water Tower By Mike Gennaro
The Zachary City Council met for its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday August 13. Members in attendance included Francis Nezianya, Brandon Noel, Laura O’Brien, Hunter Landry, and Lael Montgomery. Mayor Amrhein presided, with John Hopewell as legal counsel. While locals may revel in the success of the many Bronco sports victories, baseball still reigns supreme in Zachary, and the new water tower will help keep the favorite pastime top of mind. As Zachary’s new 500,000 gallon water nears completion, the city unveiled plans to have a little fun with the design. “A baseball stitching painting is being added to the exterior of the new elevated tank,” read the July 25, 2019, contract change order sent to Caldwell Tanks, Inc., the contractor responsible for constructing the tower. crown jewel of the region when it comes to competitive tournament play. “For $500,000, you can also get your logo on there,” the mayor said in jest. “It could say Subway,” Brandon Noel chided Francis Nezianya, who is a Subway franchisee. The Zachary Youth Park has been in the news in the past year regarding what the mayor reported was poor treatment of the facility by a local softball tournament club that tossed cigarette butts and left beer bottles on the ground. Coincidentally, representatives from that club lined the back wall of city hall this to ask for a second chance to play ball at the facility. “Please reconsider, please discuss it, and we’ll do anything we can to continue this league,” Umpire Larry Moss said on behalf of the group. L Some may be asking the question, “Why are you running for judge?” I am running to safeguard our institutions of government, family, and to enforce laws to protect our children and elderly by ensuring that justice is rendered swiftly and certainly against violent and repeat offenders. I am a firm believer of the second amendment, and I will rule to uphold the law with the right to bear arms. I am also pro-life and believe that life begins at conception based upon my Christian beliefs and values. I also believe in community-based schools that strengthen relationships among families and create lifelong bonds between children and youth who attend them. Having lived and been educated in Louisiana most of my life, I am keenly aware of the fears and frustrations of our youth and our elderly who need judges that apply laws equally and fairly without discrimination because of their social status, sexual orientation, race, religion or gender. Zachary has a unique opportunity to elect a new district judge for Division L, after the long tenure of our beloved Judge Micheal Erwin, who successfully retired after a long and distinguished legal career. I am humbled and deeply appreciative for the opportunity to serve our community. My educational pursuits have shaped, prepared and provided me with judicial temperament, a nec-
essary attribute to serve as judge. I attended Baton Rouge High School and furthered my education at Southern University where I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology and began my career in the industry. After working in Cincinnati, Ohio for General Electric Corporation as a mechanical engineer for several years, the desire to return home was forged by a passion for serving others in my community. This passion led me to enroll in Southern University’s Law Center and earn a Juris Doctorate. My life’s mission was to make a difference in the world, not only as a lawyer, but also as an elected school board member of East Baton Rouge

Parish School System. My desire to have a greater impact on the lives of others led me to study theology and obtain a Masters of Divinity degree from Christian Bible College in Baton Rouge. Additionally, I completed graduate courses in business administration at Louisiana State University, and theology courses at New Orleans Theological Seminary and Reform Theological Seminary in Jackson, MS. Upon completion of my degree in Divinity, I was licensed and ordained as a minister, then later elected as pastor of Union Bethel Family Church in Weyanoke, Louisiana. For over 35 years, I continue to practice law and be a private business owner in the community. As an attorney, I’ve handled thousands of criminal and civil cases before local, state, and federal courts throughout the state of Louisiana and Texas. These experiences have helped me develop the qualities and abilities that are helpful in being successful as the next judge, when elected. I am a proud husband, father, and grandfather who firmly believes when families thrive, our communities are made stronger. Bank of Zachary announced a strategic initiative focused on expanding into new markets and renovating existing branches. The bank recently opened its first Loan Production Office at 348 Veteran’s Boulevard in Denham Springs. In addition, Bank of Zachary acquired the recently closed Capital One location on Highway 16 in Watson. The facility is expected to be renovated and open to the public in early 2020. “We’re a 115-year-old bank, and we’re here to stay,” stated Mark Marionneaux, the bank’s President
and Chief Executive Officer. “In fact, we’re growing. We’re continuing to make enhancements that allow our customers to bank the way they want.” The Bank of Zachary also recently purchased land adjacent to its Central branch location on Hooper Rd. in the City of Central. Rotary Club District 6200 Governor Harold Domingue recently visited the Zachary Rotary Club. During his tenure as Rotary District 6200 Governor, Harold Domingue, who is currently a member of the Rotary Club of Lafayette, is required to make an official visit to each of the 50 Rotary clubs throughout the state. Zachary Rotary President Brandy Westmoreland welcomed Governor Domingue and said it was an honor to have him speak to our local Rotarians. He encouraged Rotarian’s to demonstrate the 20192020 Theme, “Rotary Connects The World.” Rotary is built on connection. Through its distinct mission and structure, Rotary International provides a way to connect to our communities, to network professionally, and to build strong and lasting relationships. District Governor Domingue also congratulated the Zachary Rotary Club for being the recipient of a Rotary International District Grant. District grants fund small-scale, short-term activities that address needs in your community. Each district club chooses which activities it will fund with these grants. The Zachary Rotary Club was awarded a $3,500 grant that will be used to help transform the Zachary Train Depot into a hands-on museum for children ages 5-12 years of age, as well as serve as a historical information site for adults.

On Thursday, July 25th, the Executive Director of the Zachary Food Pantry, Eelin Golan gave a presentation to the members of the Zachary Rotary Club. Eelin reported that the Zachary Food Pantry serves approximately 285 households a month. The food pantry is 100% volunteer ran and is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization, The food pantry is govererned by a board of 14 volunteer members. There are 50 to 65 volunteers who contribute over 650 hours total each month. The Zachary Food Pantry serves clients who reside in the Zachary School District and meet certain income criteria. This would not be possible without the help of the generous citizens, businesses and members of the Zachary Community. Galilee Baptist Church Invites All to Awana Kids Galilee Baptist Church Invites all community children to attend the new year Awana ( a discipleship program designed for children) beginning August 25. Galilee Baptist is located at 11050 Greenwell SpringsPort Hudson Rd. (Hwy 64) in Zachary. The Awana Club will be held every Sunday night during the school year from 4:45-p.m-6:30 p.m. Awana stands for Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed- the acronym comes from Timothy 2:15Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
The Awana curriculum reaches kids and their families with the gospel using proven and adaptable curriculum led by trained volunteer workers of Galilee. Additionally, the curriculum assists in the development and discipling kids so that they will walk with Christ for life. The
curriculum and programs offered start at age 3 and continue through 6th Grade. Throughout the year they will have many different programs, including theme nights similar to a vacation bible school, where dress up and game time activities will follow the bible lesson that particular week. Galilee Baptist Awana is free and open to the public. The Awana Programs are by age as listed: Cubbies are preschool age up to 3 years before Kindergarten. In Cubbies, the youngest children are drawn into a greater understanding of God and His love for them! Gatherings each week include play time,
songs and simple crafts and activities. Sparks are Kindergarten through 3rd grade. SparksÂŽ ignites the cu-
riosity of early elementary-age kids to learn about the people and events of the Bible, building a foundation of wisdom for knowing Christ. TNT are grades 4th through 6th grade. The T&T (Truth & Training)

for reaching 10,000 hours of volunteer service to Lane Regional Medical Center. She is only the second volunteer in the 59 year history of the Lane Auxiliary to reach the 10,000 hour mark. Former Auxiliary member Edith Goetzmann was recognized in 2006. Sims began volunteering with the Lane Auxiliary in 1999. Over the years she assisted in many different areas of the hospital, including the Emergency Department and the Lane Gift Shop. She also served several terms as Auxiliary president and vice-president, and chaired several committees as well. Sims was instrumental in organizing and overseeing many of the Auxiliary’s fundraisers, including book sales, bake sales, and “Popcorn Fridays.” One of her favorite memories was decorating the hospital for Christmas. For Sims volunteering is important. “I think it’s healthy for you to keep busy, I really believe that,” she says. “It keeps your mind going and it’s also a great way to give back. I just like helping people,” says Sims. Congratulations, Gladys, and THANK YOU! Lane is forever grateful for your service.

The Lane Regional Medical Center Board of Commissioners re-elected Gaynell Young chair and Jordan Charlet vice-chair during its July 22nd meeting. Young was appointed to the board in 2011 and has served as chair since 2016. Charlet was appointed to the board in 2015 and has served as vice-chair since 2016. The Lane Regional Medical Center Board of Commissioners is comprised of nine board members appointed by the Metropolitan Council of East Baton Rouge Parish. In addition to Young and Charlet, current board members include David Bowman, Debby Brian, Doze Y. Butler, Ph.D., Reagan Elkins, M.D., Donna Kline, Thomas Scott and Darnell Waites.

Movies in the Park was held Friday, August 9th in the HugYourPeople Community Park behind City Hall. Children arrived early at 7 p.m. and made their very own dragon shield before the movie started! Everyone enjoyed “How To Train Your Dragon - The Hidden World.” The volunteers served chilidogs and soft drinks to the crowd.
