Are You Ready for Some Football? The pageantry of high school football — marching bands blasting the fight song, cheerleaders imploring fans to get louder, pads popping as a linebacker tackles a running back — returns Friday night as our teams kick off the 2019 season. State Champions Zachary High looks to defend their title, while up-

starts Silliman, Slaughter, East Feliciana, West Feliciana and Central Private seek to climb to the top and taste glory on the fields. During the next few months, players will compete in at least 10 games with the goal of reaching the state playoffs. They, along with their coaches, will spend hours practic-

ing on the field and studying film in hopes of winning as many games as possible. The players' journey through the arduous season is often filled with peaks and valleys. Joining them for that journey are friends, family members, teachers, mentors and fans who will experience the euphoria of vic-

tory and the disappointment of losing. W e would be remiss if we didn't recognize the countless others who are involved in making Friday night football such a special event in Louisiana. The marching band members, the band directors, the cheerleaders, the cheer coaches, the parents who volunteer at the concession stands, the maintenance crews that keep the fields looking pristine, the volunteers who clean stadiums after a game, the sports writers and photographers who document it all, and many, many others. We wish nothing but good luck to our local teams in Zachary and the Felicianas. There's no cheering in the press box, but we always enjoy watching the teams we cover in these pages perform well. We hope you will hold onto your “2019 Pigskin Preview” throughout the season to follow schedules and rosters and help supplement the coverage the Zachary Post and Feliciana Explorer will be providing. We're ready to tee the pigskin up for the opening kickoff of 2019. How about you?

Zachary High Looks to Further the Legacy of Success

Following their third championship in the past four years, 5A Champion Broncos look to continue their success in head coach David Brewerton’s sixth year. It is impressive to where the strength of the Zachary program has grown under Brewerton and his veteran coaching staff. The program will vie for its fourth title in five years this season. Last year’s state championship will go down in history as one of the most exciting games ever played in the Superdome with the Bronco’s 27-24 victory over West Monroe. There are always challenges every year coming off of a title, and the biggest key for Zachary is keeping the defense healthy, while the offense has a chance to improve as the season moves forward. The coaching staff has been able to keep the players grounded with a level head, meanwhile keeping them hungry for success. The team leader of the ZHS program is back in senior Quarterback Keilon Brown. Brown threw for 2,511 yards last year and 25 touchdowns, running for 1,240 yards

CHEERING for the Zachary Broncos

and an additional 17 rushing touchdowns. Brown has a chance to win his third state title this year, which has never been achieved in Class 5A football in Louisiana. The running game for Zachary will again be strong with senior Ryan Allen returning with his 5’10”/ 190-pound frame coupled with his 4.6/40 speed. This will be a reloading year at wide receiver, the squad lost much depth at the position and looks to plug in some young talent to couple with one of the top wide receiver prospects in the country, Chris Hilton, who is returning for his senior year. Hilton brings 4.4/40 speed and has the propensity to make huge plays when needed most. Hilton was the hero of the Championship game last year when he caught the game winning touchdown as the clock ticked down to defeat West Monroe. Returning to assist with receiving is Senior Jayden Williams and transfer Dimitrius Calhoun. The offense returns some key leaders to keep the high powered Bronco Offense on track with senior

Center Dylan Landry, with Trey White and Mathew Clayton anchoring the offensive line for the Broncos. The veteran 2018 defense was full of Seniors, so this year the few remaining starters will be cultivating talented underclassmen.

Senior Linebacker Kenyon Martin will quarterback the defense, with Charles Selders and Elijah Hill stepping up at Defensive End. The defensive secondary returns the speedy Sean Burrell and his 4.40/40 speed to the cornerback position.

CENTRAL PRIVATE

Central Private Makes Major Transformation Moving to LHSAA The Central Private School Red Hawks are among the newest members of the LHSAA. Previously, as a member of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools, Central Private was normally preparing to play in a jamboree game at this time of year. Instead, CPS is now part of the LHSAA’s Class 1A. “For the Mississippi league, we would have had our jamboree next week and our first game would be in the middle of August,” second-year CPS coach Robbie Mahfouz said. “Instead of starting two weeks before the LHSAA, this year we got extra time in the weight room and extra practice, which is good.” Central Private, whose LHSAA membership was approved in June of last year, will compete in District 6-1A, which also includes traditional power Southern Lab. Central Private finished 4-5 last season, but was 0-3 in MAIS District 5-3A. Included in the district record was one last game against longtime rival Silliman Institute of Clinton. The Red Hawks will look to make their mark in the LHSAA with a squad of 29 players. On offense, a pair of senior skill players, wide receiver Cole Birdsong and running back Kaleb Fontenot are among four top returnees. Defensively, all-district linebacker Mason Bailey, a junior, leads a group of six returning players. The Red Hawks will likely face one of their strongest tests when they host another traditional power, defending Division III champion Notre Dame of Crowley in Week 8. Playing the Pioneers will be part of a new direction for Central Private, but it’s a path that was chosen because of the benefits for all of the Red Hawks sports teams.
