Not Just for Kicks: Belles Bring Home First Place

Lady Broncos Open with a Slam Dunk

by

The ZHS Bronco Belles won first place with their kick routine at the state competition this past weekend. Pictured above are team members (bottom row, l to r): Morgan Hurst (secretary), Brooke Leblanc (2nd co-captain), Amber Boudreaux (captain), Alexis Ledoux (1st co-captain); (middle row): Jasmine Kinchen, Kennedi Saari, Julie Town, Jacelyn Rasti, Emma Dry, Katlyn Daigle, Myiah Smothers, Emily Leblanc; (top row): Kristina Chaves (sponsor), Naja Webb, Makenzie Ratcliff, Brooke Cranford, Bailey Boudreaux, Madison Bruton, Amber Graves, Katelynn Hunt, and Coach Melanie Anderson.

On January 6, the Zachary High School Belles Dance Team competed in the Universal Dance Association’s Louisiana State Championship, held at Southeastern University in Hammond. The girls competed against teams from all over the state and placed first in the Varsity High Kick Division for the second year in a row, performing a routine set to the song Danger Zone choreographed by Coach Melanie Anderson. Anderson explained the team’s two-year winning streak this way: “More than anything, what is able to get us ahead in the High Kick Division is our strength in choreography, attention to detail, and performance value. Energy and projection is so important in this category. Also, we use the high kick genre for our field routines during football season to

help us prepare for competition season. Everything we do is in preparation for something to follow.” The team also competed in the Varsity Hip Hop Division where they placed ninth in the state. The Belles will travel to Walt Disney World on February 2 to compete in the National Dance Team Championship, no small feat. “We work really hard to be the team we are,” said Coach Anderson. “We practice year round, and while people think we are just a spirit squad that is there to cheer on other teams, we are also really competitive in the dance team world. We put a lot of work into our routines and all the time spent is paying off! It’s good to be recognized for our hard work and accomplishments.”

The ZHS Lady Broncos basketball team started their district schedule on Friday January 11 in an away game against Central. The Broncos defeated their arch rival 67-4 on Friday evening (that is not a typo, they really beat them 67-4), improving to .500 on the season at 9-9 heading

into the meat of district play.. All Broncos fans are encouraged to come out and support the Lady Broncos as they face all of their district opponents this year. The schedule of games can be found on the calendar of events on the Post’s webpage: www.zacahrypost.com.

Disease Awareness Month in Zachary Observes Martin

F o r the tenth year, the Americ a n Heart Association and the National Heart, L u n g a n d Blood Institute are raising awareness about the risks of heart disease in women by encouraging Americans to wear red on National Wear Red Day®. Heart disease is the number one killer of women in Louisiana and in the USA. It kills more women each year than all forms of cancer combined. Through this campaign, the AHA continues to give women the tools with which to take control of their heart health. In 2004 when the initiative was started, cardiovascular disease claimed the lives of nearly 500,000 women. Ten years later, these numbers have dropped significantly. According to the Go Red for Women website, 21% fewer women are dying from heart disease and 23% more women are aware that it’s their number one health threat. Wear Red Day is always held on the first Friday of February; this year, that day falls on February 1. City of Zachary employees will all be wearing red shirts that day, and all

Zachary residents are encouraged to wear red themselves. Mayor David Amrhein is also asking area businesses to show their support during the month of February by entering a Decorate Your Door contest as part of the city-wide Paint the Town Red initiative. Registration forms can be obtained at the Mayor’s Office, located at 4700 Main Street or can be downloaded on the city website at www. cityofzachary.org. The deadline to register is January 25, and the entrance fee is $50. All proceeds collected will stay in the Capital Area to fund educational programs and research. Judging will take place on February 14. The winner will receive a plaque and will have a picture posted on the American Heart Association’s Facebook page. “Together we can raise awareness, educate and hopefully prevent some

Luther King Day

Martin Luther King’s birthday is an official City of Zachary holiday and will be observed on Monday, January 21. All municipal government offices will be closed on this day. Solid waste collection (garbage) in Zachary will be made on Monday, January 21, by Waste Management under their contract with the City of Zachary for residents normally scheduled for pick-up, according to Chris Davezac, director of Public Works.

Little Helpers with Big Hearts

“They’re a blessing,” explained mom Nicole. “It’s such a joy raising children who don’t mind lending a helping hand and who unselfishly give themselves when they could have been home playing with their gifts from Santa.” The duo also helped out at the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank over Thanksgiving break, assembling food boxes to be given to residents who couldn’t afford a holiday meal. “Although it felt good to put together food boxes, it felt great to see children my age happy, ‘cause they were able to eat a good hot meal,” said nine-year-old Cameron. “I complain about things that I want and don’t get, but now I see that there are children who wish they had what I have,” said Yuri.

Fifth grader Yuri Ayers and fourth grader Cameron Ayers, both students at Copper Mill Elementary, shared their hearts of gold, volunteering with their parents Nicole and Adrian Ayers at St. Vincent DePaul Christmas morning. They helped to serve a hot meal and hand out toys.

The Stewart Twins

Henry and Charlie Stewart are back in Virginia after spending the holidays with family in Zachary. Henry Hugh and Charles Pentek Stewart are the twin sons of Henry and Caroline Stewart of Alexandria, Va. Proud grandparents are Lamar

and Virginia Stewart and Gary and Barbara Pentek and greatgrandparent Eleanor Sheldrick. The twins were born prematurely on May 5, 2012 at 26 weeks, four days. Henry weighed 1 lb., 14 oz. and was 12 in. long; Charlie weighed 2 lb. and was 13 in. long. Henry spent 86 days in the NICU and Charlie spent 115 days. Despite their very early arrival, the boys are doing very well. The Stewart and Pentek families would like to give a big thank you to all the people of Zachary, especially the people at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church who prayed so hard for these little miracles! All the love and support was overwhelming and helped so much during this difficult time. Even though the Stewarts are miles away, the people of Zachary will be forever in their hearts!

Historic Jewish Temple Restored to Former Glory by Nalini Raghavan Gore

On December 9, 2012 the newlyrenovated, historic Temple Sinai in St. Francisville was rededicated in a ceremony that purposefully harkened back to the original dedication occurring in 1903. Helen Williams, a board member of the Julius Freyhan Foundation, reported that St. Francisville residents and Jewish families with an ancestral connection to the temple packed the modest, one-room building on the afternoon of the dedication in addition to local dignitaries and politicians. St. Francisville author Anne Butler, a descendent of one of the speakers at the original dedication ceremony, offered a history of the temple. Local children also played a part in the ceremony, echoing the procession of young Jewish congregants that took place in 1903. The closing reception, again replaying history, was held at Grace Episcopal Church’s Jackson Hall, called Pythian Hall in 1903. The rededication was the culmination of a renovation of the 100-yearold temple, overseen by the Julius Freyhan Foundation and made possible through a Save America’s Treasures federal grant. Founded in 1984, the Julius Freyhan Foundation was originally formed with the sole mission of restoring the Julius Freyhan High School, which stands in significant disrepair next to Temple Sinai at 4740 Prosperity Street. Mr. Julius Freyhan, for whom the foundation is named, was a prominent Jewish merchant and the primary benefactor for the school’s construc-

tion back in 1905. Thanks to the federal grant as well as private donations, however, the Foundation was able to complete the restoration of the temple first, including this historic center of worship in its larger mission of resurrecting the structures for use as nondenominational community centers, event spaces and museum, according to Williams. The temple renovation plans were completed by Hammond-based Holly & Smith Architects. The firm was charged with restoring the structure using its original form and materials as well as designing and adding an adjoining service building at the back of the original temple to replace a dated, 1950s addition. According to the firm’s website, “The new service building’s design was developed to allow it to blend into the site and allow the adjacent historic structures to take center-stage whilst still retaining a unique contemporary character of its own.” An article appearing in local paper The True Democrat described the then-new temple as:

glass windows, giving abundant light and ventilation. The acoustics of the building is perfect. The interior walls are painted white and the trimmings, furnishings of the altar and choir gallery are of quarter sawed oak, as are the handsome circular pews, which are comfortable and handsome.

Save for the dove grey exterior and the turrets, which Williams explained were cost prohibitive to rebuild, the current renovation has honored the building’s original appearance and construction. Though successful and influential, St. Francisville’s Jewish community was always small. Within two decades of the temple’s opening, so many of the congregation’s members had

35 x 50 ft. in length with a high ceiling and many large stained

passed on or moved to larger cities that the temple was sold to the Presbyterians who used the structure until 1994. According to reporting by the Advocate, renovation of the old Julius Freyhan High School will cost around $2.3 million, which the Foundation is still working to secure. Perhaps the successful resurrection of the historic temple, which followed upon the heels of a $300,000 endowment made by a granddaughter of Julius Freyhan for the sole purpose of restoring the school, will reinvigorate public and private generosity. (Top): A view of the temple and its contemporary service building, which is attached at the rear of the temple.
