Hometown Hero 2012: Mary Bellcase Dear Readers, On behalf of the staff at the Zachary Post and Feliciana Explorer, I would like to extend a hearty congratulations to Mrs. Mary Bellcase, the papers’ 2012 Hometown Hero(ine)! Mrs. Bellcase, as our readers know by now, is the compassionate, tireless leader behind Zachary Community Helpers, an organization that helps to fill the more urgent needs of many of the area’s struggling families. All year long, Mrs. Bellcase is answering calls: one for a new pair of shoes for a little one’s pinched toes, a heater for a family with no central heating system or food for empty bellies. Her busiest time of year is the holidays, when she and her team of volunteers organize a toy drive for area children. Mrs. Bellcase chose Zachary Community Helpers as the recipient of the $500 prize. Knowing how thrifty Mrs. Bellcase is, we know these funds will go a long way. Over and over as the competition progressed, Mrs. Bellcase expressed sincere surprise–first at her nomination, second at being selected as a finalist, and finally when she was informed

Accepting Applications for Leadership NORTH Leadership NORTH is an annual leadership development program for communities in the north capital region. The Zachary Chamber hosts the program with assistance from Louisiana Department of Economic Development and LSU Ag Center. Participation in the program is open to persons living or working in the cities of Baton Rouge, Zachary, Central or Baker, or the parishes of Pointe Coupee, East Feliciana or West Feliciana who have the full support of the organization or business they represent. The program is designed to engage emerging leaders in the region and prepare them to meet the future needs of these communities. Through the exchange of viewpoints and experiences, participants are exposed to the challenges, opportunities and vital issues affecting the northern Baton Rouge region. To graduate from the Leadership NORTH program, a participant is expected to attend all sessions, which occur once a month from March to September. Specific dates, times and topics for each session are provided in the application. If you are interested in participating in the 2013 Leadership NORTH program, you may visit http://cloud.chambermaster.com/userfiles/UserFiles/ chambers/859/File/LN-2013Application.pdf to download the application. The deadline to return it to the Zachary Chamber of Commerce is January 31, 2013. Individuals may also nominate an “emerging leader” by filling out an application on his or her behalf.

The Lady Broncos have had a strong season this year. Even though the weather has had them practicing daily in the cold and rain, they have remained strong and fierce. Last week, the team defeated Walker 3-0 and Denham Springs 5-0, keeping them undefeated in District! The ladies continue to practice and focus on strong ball skills, communication and team work. They will finish their regular season games this week at home Tuesday against St. Michael and then Friday against Central. The game on Friday against Central is also senior night. Everyone is invited to cheer on the team at 6 p.m. both nights.

BELLCASE
continued from page 1
that she was the winner. I suppose for someone who has silently and selflessly worked for 25 years at the same mission, accolades are unexpected and beside-the-point. But for those of us whose lives aren’t lived in service, her efforts are beyond admirable…they are amazing. When we embarked upon our inaugural Hometown Heroes competition, we envisioned an opportunity to highlight individuals who make a lasting impact on our communities but who are not often recognized for their service. The response we received from the public was overwhelming. Not only did we receive an outstanding pool of nominees, we also received hundreds of votes from the public who selected the hero that most inspired them. Thank you to everyone who participate; we hope through this contest that we have provided a way for the community to sufficiently express its thanks, not only to Mrs. Bellcase, but to all of our nominees
and finalists. To the finalists: We are so appreciative of the time each of you gave towards this effort. We understand that revealing your thoughts and motivations behind the service work you all provide can seem like an unnaturally public expression of something that is very private. But by sharing your stories, we know that you inspired others to give a little more of themselves and to see the value in the un-glamorous, behind-the-scenes work that you all do. We know that your stories had an impact on the community because we were told so by readers … again and again. To the nominators: Thank you for taking the time to submit your nominee. It is as great a gift to sit down and write 500 words by deadline to honor the work of someone else as it is to actually do the work itself. Without your effort, the community would never have come to know about these inspiring heroes; and for that, the community would have been a little poorer. Nalini Raghavan, Editor
