Zachary Unites to Remember the Dream At ceremony marking what would have been MLK’s 85th birthday, members of the Zachary community gathered Monday evening at Zachary City Hall, then marched down Main Street in remembrance of the civil rights icon. Martin Luther King Jr. is revered across the USA, as evidenced by the wide variety of celebrations in his honor around the nation last Monday. Here in Zachary, hundreds of celebrants joined together to commemorate and celebrate with the Annual Candlelight March honoring the legacy of Dr. King. This year the emphasis was paying a special tribute to all veterans. After the mile long march from City Hall to New Pilgrim Baptist Church, Retired Major Patrick Jenkins, Director of Operations with the Zachary Community School Board, served as the keynote speaker for the evening.

Dykes Resigns from School Board

Zachary School Board member Donnie Dykes Jr. resigned last Wednesday from his elected position because he recently moved out of the district he represents. Dykes, the District 8 school board member, said he remains a Zachary resident but moved in with his new wife in a house in District 5, prompting the resignation. The resignation was submitted January 16 in a letter from Dykes to Secretary of State Tom Schedler, the resignation became effective on January 22. His term was to expire at the end of 2014. This fall, all Zachary School Board member positions are up for election for the 4-year term to begin in January 2015. Dawn Avants, a resident of District 8, was appointed by the rest of the Zachary Community School Board to fill out the final year of Dykes term.

St. Patrick’s Church Undergoing Renovation The Congregation of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church on Church Street in Zachary held a Special Eucharist last Sunday presided over by Retired Bishop of the Diocese of Louisiana Charles Jenkins to officially break ground on the major expansion of their sanctuary. St. Patrick’s Rector Chad Jones says he expects the construction to last approximately 6 to 8 months, but when completed, the sanctuary and chapel will be almost double in size. Until renovations are complete and the congregation is meeting in the “new” church in Martin Hall, which houses the St. Patrick’s Pre- school. They will continue to have Eucharist services at 9:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. on Sunday mornings.

Pictured are Lay Eucharistic Minister Jesse Noble, Bishop Charles Jenkins, Rector Chad Jones, and Deacon Camille Wood as they prepare to break ground on the new sanctuary.

At the last regular meeting held on Wednesday January 15, 2014, the club guest speaker was Dr. Wayne Gravois. Dr. Gravois thanked the Zachary Lions club for its donation of more than 350 pairs of used eyeglasses. In addition, Dr. Gravois reported on his recent medical mission and how those donated glasses were cleaned, measured and categorized by prescription before the trip. Two months ago, Dr. Wayne Gravois and Dr. Jovana Kakish, who is a Resident at Baton Rouge General, were part of a combined medical and construction mission team who went to Nicaragua. The trip was organized by the First Baptist Church of Zachary and a team of volunteers mainly from Zachary, took part in that mission. This year, an eye mission was incorporated to the regular medical mission. Team members conducted vision exams and eyeglasses were distributed free of charge to men, women and children who needed them. Those glasses help the recipients maintain employment allowing him or her to continue to support their families. They help them to be self-sufficient. They

John Kent Transitions from Retail to Private Jeweler By James Ronald Skains

“There are a number of things about a diamond other than just its sparkle,” John Kent, a private jeweler located in Zachary, told the POST. “Don’t get me wrong, the sparkle of the diamond is of great importance, but you want a diamond that sparkles in all kind of lights, not just under the lights in a jewelry store.” “The four C’s of diamonds are cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. The cut of the diamond is what gives the diamond its brilliant sparkle. The cut of the diamond is designed to cut out visible imperfections. However, if the cut is too deep or too shallow the sparkle is reduced. A pure diamond should transmit visible light and appear as colorless crystal. Colors in diamonds result from defects and impurities.” “Most diamonds are advertised and sold based on color and clarity,’’ Kent added. “The carat weight ultimately determines the price of the diamonds, but many times the sparkle is sacrificed due to the carat weight.” “Many times the brilliance of a diamond is sacrificed to maintain the carat weight. In my business as a private jeweler, I think that it is my responsibility to educate my customers so they can get the best diamond for the amount of money they are spending. I try to make

John Kent sure my customers are getting the best carat weight and brilliant sparkle for the money.” The diamond is also renowned in our present day society as a material with superlative qualities. Most of these superlative qualities originate from the strong covalent bonding between the carbon atoms. In particular, the diamond has the highest hardness and thermal conductivity of any bulk material. These properties determine the major industrial application of diamond cutting

and polishing tools and the scientific application in diamond knives and diamond anvil cells. “I’m finding more and more people who don’t like to shop for diamonds in a jewelry store,’’ Kent acknowledged. “First of all, some people don’t want other people to know they are buying diamond jewelry. Secondly, many people realize that when they buy from a major jeweler chain they are helping to pay for all the advertising and expensive store locations.” “I get very few customers from

advertising,’’ Kent pointed out. “Most of my customers are by word of mouth advertising from satisfied customers. Each time one of my diamonds is shown to someone, my name goes with it. I have been able to build my business over the years by providing my customers excellent services and lower prices for quality diamonds.” “Most of my work is custom designed jewelry. If a person can bring me a picture or even draw me a sketch of what they want, I can take it from there. There are numerous shapes that diamonds can be cut. We can do horseshoe designs, or your custom logo or whatever shape you want your diamonds to be arranged in.” The 43-year-old Kent got an early start in the diamond jewelry business by going to work through some contacts he had with a Diamond Wholesaler. Later on Kent spent some years working with Patton’s Jewelers in Baton Rouge. “I was fortunate to be able to go to work at an early age with a diamond wholesaler,” Kent explained. “There is a lot of work involved in this type of job, a lot of traveling and trade shows.” “Also, to be successful in the diamond business you must spend a lot of time learning the business from an academic standpoint. I’ve spent considerable time over the
