The talented ZHS Lady Bronco soccer team defeated the Central Wildcats on Friday night 3-0, capturing the district title! This was also the last regular season game for the senior

Broncos to take the field. Goalie Hope Yantis, defender Katy Cop, defender Bryanna Fields and defender Sarah Grimball have all played soccer for their four years at ZHS.

Wild World of Mardi Gras

by

Krewe Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler celebrated its 28th Mardi Gras Gala presentation with the theme “Wild” World of Sports at the Municipal Auditorium in Baker on Saturday, January 26. Reigning over the evening sports festivities were King XXVIII Mr. Brent Fuselier and his wife Queen XXVIII Dr. Gwen Fuselier. Presiding over the celebration as Ball Captain was Mr. Pat Sullivan. Returning 2012 royalty was Queen XXVII Ms. Candie Bouquet. She completed her reign in the ballroom by relinquish-

ing the traditional krewe rhinestone scepters to the newly-crowned 2013 king and queen. Also participating in the tableau and acting as the masters of ceremonies for the evening were Mr. Jordan Charlet, Mr. Garry Schenk and Dr. Blair Wilbert. They directed the evening’s tableau while representing colorful sports announcers reporting from the LLBTR Sports Center Desk. Ball Captain Mr. Pat Sullivan See WILD MARDI GRAS on page 2

For almost 100 students at Northwestern Middle School (NMS), a production of Beauty and the Beast took hold of their lives as they delivered seven amazing performances of the show. “These kids are the cream of the crop,” said Paula Swilley, NMS teacher and director for the show. “I was amazed at how supportive and sweet they all were to each other, despite all of the obstacles we had come our way!” Swilley said that when she told the kids to “break a leg” she did not mean it literally. “We had a broken elbow, twisted ankles, the Beast losing his voice, mics go out and more; but they didn’t miss a beat preparing and performing the show,” said Swilley. Students from drama, choir, dance and band all participated based upon tryouts. All performances were both breathtaking and sold out. The Broadway costumes were rented while the sets were built with assistance from the advanced drama students of Zachary High School. Jeremy Reyn-

olds is the technical director and oversees facilities for both NMS and ZHS. “The technical aspects of this show were much more than a typical middle school play,” said Reynolds. “Our students wore wireless microphones to help with voice and song projection, and there were dramatic light changes.” The students began prepping for each show at least two hours before to get in costume and have hair/make-up done. Dawn Thompson, owner of Headquarters Salon, volunteered her time and skills to change students—boys and girls—into mystical and magical creatures with lots of bobby pins, updos and hair spray. “When one of my clients mentioned the play and how much was going to be involved, I jumped at the chance to give back to the community,” said Thompson. “It has been a lot of fun, and the kids loved the attention to their hair to compliment the elaborate costumes.” Read more and see more pictures online at www.zacharypost.com.

represented baseball, honoring his favorite American League team, the Boston Red Sox. His baseball uniform and backpiece displayed the famous outfield called the Big Green Monster of Boston’s Fennway Park Stadium. The 2013 King, Mr. Brent Fuselier, represented NFL football. His regal attire was inspired by the beloved professional Louisiana team, the New Orleans Saints. The King’s black and gold ensemble was designed to replicate the football playing field of the Mercedes Benz Super Dome and the Super Bowl trophy. The 2013 Queen, Dr. Gwen Fuselier, represented the Saintsations– the Saint’s entertaining cheerleaders, showcasing the familiar and much-admired Louisiana emblem, a golden fleur de lis. Court participants included Mrs. Peggy Hebert representing synchronized swimming. She dove into the pool in a blue multi-colored swimsuit. The costume featured a tiered wrap skirt and aqua blue feather headpiece and back piece. Mrs. Tracy Carroll represented the sport of women’s tennis. She and her racket took to the court in a tennis dress and floor-length shoulder cape adorned with neon yellow tennis balls and black tennis rackets. Mrs. Reagan Huckabee represented the international sport of women’s soccer. A former soccer player herself, she was swathed from head to toe in black and white soccer balls. Mr. Clif Murphy represented the gentlemen’s sport of golf. His col-

orful character reflected the many players and personalities of the game enjoyed by royals and working folk alike. He entered the golf course driving a hot rod golf cart and ended his game at the 19th hole. The 2013 board of directors entertained the audience as “Wild World of Sports” uniformed referees. They called the wild game plays and wildly blew their whistles as guests participated in a free throw basketball contest, bowling tournament and sports trivia question-andanswer challenge. These members included President Leona Benoit, Past President Wendy Elbourne, President Elect Chrisy Wilbert, Secretary Melanie Sullivan, Treasurer Barbara Mier and board members Tracy Carroll, Jimmy DeFranceshi, Peggy Hebert, Johnny Grimmett, Lisa Munn, Pam O’Neil, Clif Murphy, Kim Overstreet and Margaret Scroggs. The evening’s entertainment was provided by Domino. Tableau lighting was provided by Hayes Taylor and audio by Jacob Heintz. Choreography and pre-ball and tableau music was provided by Peggy Hebert, videography by Rick Richards, and tableau and still photography by Rhonda Gerald. The costumes were designed by Pam O’Neil and D&D of Kenner, La. and were executed by Tracy Carroll, Cathy DeFranceschi, Peggy Hebert, Pam O’Neil and D&D. The stage set was designed by Tracy Carroll and crafted by Pat Sullivan and krewe members, while ballroom scenery was provide by Tracy Carroll, Melanie Sullivan and krewe members.

Local Entrepreneur Brings Business Home

Danielle Font never thought that an exercise class would change more than the shape of her body, but when her Jazzercise classes in Zachary ceased, doors were opened that she never knew existed. “I loved my classes, so when the instructor stopped doing classes back in 2011, I had to find a new class; and I did–in St. Francisville. After only nine months, she lost 40 pounds. “One day the instructor came up to me and asked if I had ever thought about being a Jazzercise instructor and doing classes of my own. I told her, ‘there is no way I can memorize the routine, but to talk while exercising and reverse it!’” Font ended up getting her certification and opened the doors last fall to her Jazzercise classes located inside The Rock Church. “My goal all along was to bring this business back alive in Zachary because I know the difference it can make in lives through fun exercises; and Zachary is my home.” As a certified fitness instructor Font offers classes Monday, Tuesday

and Thursday at 6:30 p.m. inside an area she leases from the church located at 20810 Plank Rd. There are flexible payment options and commitments are not required. For more information, email Danielle at danfont1@aol.com.
