While many of us enjoy watching the bowl games for the football action, many families in Zachary were tuned in to the Outback Bowl on January 1 for a very different reason— the halftime show. Hosted in Tampa, Fla., the halftime show is one of the highlights of this bowl game, held each New Year’s Day. The show features up to 5,000 young people from more than 20 schools throughout the United States. This year, members of the Zachary High Band were among the smiling faces and jittery-nerved teens performing. “We were invited to attend by a company called Brightspark Events, the company that coordinates halftime shows and band events all over the country,” said ZHS Band Director Jason Venable. “The invitation was extended to us based upon our previous participation in the Peach Bowl in 1988 and 2004,” he said. Eighty-five band members along with ten chaperones and band leaders left Zachary on Friday, December 28 for this once-in-a-lifetime event in the panhandle of Florida. Although the bowl game was not until January 1, the show was the culmination of four days of performances and competitions that included marching in the Outback Bowl Parade on New Year’s Eve. As part of the overall event, music competitions were also held, allowing a maximum of four events per school, with participation levels determined by each school. Band classes were determined by school enrollment, not band size for each competition. Small schools were Class 1, medium schools Class 2 and large schools Class 3, which is where Zachary High fell. The Zachary High Band of Blue participated in four events to take advantage of this exceptional opSee BAND page 2

portunity: jazz band, concert band, parade band and the halftime show competitions. According to Venable, each band is given a rating based upon their performance in each competition. Upon completion of each competition, bands in first, second and third place are recognized in the awards program. The band’s hard work and preparation paid off. “The jazz and concert bands both received gold ratings and second place in our classification, as well as the parade band,” stated Venable. “We received a silver rating
and first place in our classification for the halftime show competition.” All bands also competed in a mass band performance during the Outback Bowl’s halftime show. The mass band performance involved over 2,200 musicians, 500 dancers, and 200 color guard members from 15 different schools nationwide. Some of the states represented included Missouri, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin and Georgia. The Zachary High Band of Blue is under the direction of Jason Venable and Donny Alexander. “I would like to thank the Bronco Band Boosters for their hard work throughout the stadium seat fundraiser and con-
cessions. Without their hard work and dedication, none of this would have been possible, “ said Venable. “I would also like to thank the Zachary Community School Board and the ZHS administration, faculty, and staff for their continued support,” he added. The trip cost $620 per person and was paid either out of pocket or through fundraising. The band members, chaperones, equipment and awards arrived back home in Zachary on Wednesday, January 2. Be sure to congratulate them if possible and from all of us here at the Zachary Post, we say, “Great job Bronco Band members”!

Business 21st Century Cotillion to Launch Program Moreau Offering Pediatric Therapy Services Opportunities for young people to properly congregate and socialize have become few and far between. Reasons for this vary greatly; but in January, middle school students in Zachary and the surrounding communities will have an outlet that will appeal to parents and students. The program is open to students currently in sixth through eighth grades and is designed to combine today’s youth activities, events, interactions and communication styles with timeless courtesies and social skills including basic ballroom dance instruction and tasteful, modern social dance styles. ”Students regularly participate in activities that build skills in sports and provide exposure to the arts, but few are offered the chance to participate in a fun, interactive learning environment which build skills that will be utilized every day of their lives. This greatly assists in providing the edge needed when compet-
ing for scholarships and jobs,” said Beth Young, program director. Topics of instruction include giftgiving and receiving, responding to invitations, electronic etiquette, refreshment table procedure, boys and girls together, introductions and shaking hands and much more–with a current-day atmosphere. The program format includes two instructional club meetings, two structured dances and an end-of-semester ball. The program will expand in the fall to offer more advanced social experiences, outings and events for high school students in ninth and tenth grades. The 21st Century Cotillion Club will host a parents’ reception in mid-January to provide an overview and to accept membership registration. To request an application and receive additional information, please contact Beth Young at 985-320-0907 or by email at 21CC@ att.net.

Cruise Control on 50: A Tribute of Love
Pete and Barbara Meredith celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on January 12, 2013. Wow! This couple has managed to climb the mountains, walk through the valleys and cruise the rough waves of marriage for fifty years, and they are more in
love today than ever. They love to go on cruises where they can relax and build more special memories together. Both Pete and Barbara will tell you that they do not have all of the answers to the situations in life that could have caused devastating marital problems, but they do know and worship someone who does; Jesus is the Captain of their lives, and He calms the rough waves underneath them, leads them through their valleys and guides them to their mountaintops. The cruise control needs to be bumped up a little because you got a long way to go baby!
