A Survivor’s Journey By Ashley Evans
Tricia Ferguson is a bubbly, positive personality all decked out in pink from her earrings to her shirt to her purse. “I love seeing everything covered in pink during the month of October,” she says. Tricia is a breast cancer survivor and proudly wears pink as a way to show other women that she is in the sisterhood of survivors. “I have met several ladies that have become really close friends because they noticed my pink ribbon necklace and struck up a conversation telling me that they are a survivor as well.” Tricia’s journey with breast cancer began a little over 2 years ago. At a routine yearly checkup in August of 2011, her doctor felt a lump and determined it to be a cyst, which is normal for most women. Tricia then had her regular 40-year-old annual mammogram and it came back clean. However, she felt like something “just wasn’t right.” The area where the cyst was located continued to cause pain and felt like it was getting bigger. Encouraged by a friend to follow her instincts, she went back to the doctor on December 5th and was sent for a diagnostic mammogram and an ultrasound. The results of the mammogram showed nothing, but the ultrasound showed a solid mass. “I will always remember seeing a red dot on my medical chart when the doctor reviewed the results with me. I knew that wasn’t good. I was immediately sent to a Breast Specialist to discuss the results and have a biopsy. That’s when the fear of the unknown and the waiting began,” Ferguson said. The date December 8, 2011 is imprinted in Tricia’s memory. It’s the day she got her official diagnosis. “I knew I would receive the results of the biopsy either at one of the holiday events I had that week or at work.” As anticipated, Tricia got a phone call from her doctor while she was at work, confirming that she did have breast cancer. She was diagnosed with Infiltrating, or Invasive, Ductal Carcinoma Stage 1. “It’s a day I will never forget. I went

immediately into my boss’s office and burst into tears. I will always remember her compassion. She hugged me and began helping me contact friends to meet me at the doctor’s office later that day to begin discussing my options.” The next step was a series of tests to determine the course of treatment. After several weeks, the test results came back and surgery was scheduled for January 19, 2012. “I was blessed that the results of every test kept coming back the way that my surgeon hoped for. I elected to have a Lumpectomy with Sentinel Lymph Node Removal. People assume that a mastectomy is the only option, but research is now so advanced that there are other options.” By the time of Tricia’s surgery, the tumor had grown and her cancer was at Stage 2. In addition to the surgery, she underwent 33 radiation treatments. Since the cancer was caught early, it had not spread to the lymph nodes and chemotherapy was not needed. Proudly, Tricia has been cancerfree for 21 months. She just received a “clean” mammogram report, so now she only has to get those scans yearly, instead of every 6 months. She continues to have appointments every 3 months for ultrasounds and blood work. She will also have to take a horSee SURVIVOR on page 2
Zachary Fire Department Sporting Pink Helmets for Cancer Awareness For the Second year in a row, in observance of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Zachary volunteer and career firefighters will be donning pink all month long…for the right price. In a fundraising effort to support the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the Fire Department sold pink regulation helmets to 51 local businesses at a cost of $300. In return for the contribution, each hat will be worn by a Zachary firefighter during the entire month of October with the business’s name, the year, and the firefighter’s name inscribed on the shield of the hat. Once the month has passed, the firefighters will give up
their pink helmets to the sponsoring businesses so that they can be placed on display. Firefighters will return for their regulation pink the following October and will wear it again all month long at a cost of $100. Every year that a business participates will be added to the shield. The orders have been placed for this year’s helmets, but businesses can still get in on the fun next year. Of course, anyone may make a donation at any time. For more information about participation in this awareness campaign, call the fire station at 225654-0026.
Zachary Post is Going Pink in Honor of Cancer Awareness Month
In promotion of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Zachary Post is proud to shine the spotlight on this worthy cause through our commemorative “Pink Edition.” The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) is a collaboration of national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies working together to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease, and provide greater access to services. Since its inception more than 25 years ago, NBCAM has been at the forefront of promoting awareness of breast cancer issues and has evolved along with the national dialogue on
breast cancer. NBCAM recognizes that, although many great strides have been made in breast cancer awareness and treatment, there remains much to be accomplished. Today, we remain dedicated to educating and empowering women to take charge of their own breast health. Although October is designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, NBCAM is dedicated to raising awareness and educating individuals about breast cancer throughout the year. We at the Zachary Post encourage you to regularly get screened for this very treatable form of cancer. To receive information on getting a free screening in Louisiana, please call 1 (888) 599-1073 for more information.

monal drug called Tamoxifen for the next 5-10 years, which helps to decrease the risk of the cancer coming back after surgery. According to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. This is an eye-opening statistic, but early detection can save lives. Tricia’s advice for other women: -Follow your instincts -Be your own health care advocate-ask questions -Have a good treatment team of doctors that communicate with each other -Ask for help-seek out support groups, you are not alone -Educate yourself with reputable sources such as American Cancer Society, National Breast Cancer Foundation, National Cancer Institute, or Susan G. Komen -Conduct monthly self exams and get mammograms annually -Stay positive and believe in the power of prayer “Not everyone is open about their journey and that’s fine,“ says Tricia. “Everyone’s journey is different. I hope that by sharing what I have been through I can help someone else. I want to start giving back to the community to give back the help I was given. I think breast cancer has given me a voice. I want to use that voice to help other women.” Tricia Ferguson is originally from Greenfield, Indiana. She moved here from Orlando 3 ½ years ago. She is employed as Human Resources Manager by KPAQ Industries, a manufacturer of pulp and paper products located in St. Francisville, LA.

CrossFit Zachary to Raise Funds for Mammograms
On Saturday, November 2 at 10:30 am, CrossFit Zachary will host their first annual Barbells for Boobs fundraiser at their location at 5041 Hwy. 19 Unit C. Barbells for Boobs is a non-profit organization that provides funding to pay for breast cancer detection services as a last resort for thousands of people who don’t qualify for assistance elsewhere. The mission of the charity is to save lives through the early detection of breast cancer, regardless of one’s age, gender or ability to pay. The funds raised through Barbells for Boobs go directly to the Mammograms in Action Grant Program. Through this program, CrossFit is able to provide funding and resources nationwide in two impactful ways. First, by providing grants directly to community based breast centers, and secondly though a collaboration with nationally recognized breast health care organizations. All of this is made possible through the fundraising efforts of supporters around the world. In 2009, the first Barbells for Boobs event was held in a parking lot in Corona Del Mar, California with only 60 athletes from 3 local CrossFit affiliates. Since then, Barbells for Boobs has grown exponentially and now involves more than 45,000 participants across 1300 affiliates in 23 countries. Last year, CrossFit Zachary participated in a Barbells for Boobs event in Hammond. This will be their first year to host in Zachary. Fabian Herrera, owner of Cross-
Fit Zachary, hopes the event becomes a community affair. “The gym will be decked out in pink, spectators and participants are encouraged to wear pink, and the weights will even be wrapped in pink duct tape. There will be music. It’s just a fun time for the community to show support for breast cancer awareness,” says Herrera. Every $80 donated helps fund one mammogram for someone in need. Members who raise at least $80 will receive a Barbells for Boobs t-shirt. Anyone can participate in the fundraising efforts; one does not have to be a CrossFit member. “Our initial goal was to raise $1,000 to donate. We have exceeded that $1,000 and now hope to raise $2,000,” says Herrera. The actual event on November 2 will center around participants doing a workout called “Grace” Clean and Jerks. “By dedicating a workout that we feel is tough helps us sympathize with a woman struggling with breast cancer,” says Herrera. Participants will cap out at 10 minutes and go in heats. CrossFit coaches will be there to monitor and supervise. “We now have 40 participants lined up. We would like to have 50 or more.” To help raise money for this worthy cause or to participate in the event, please call (225) 255-0815, visit the website at www.crossfitzachary.com, or their Barbells for Boobs fundraising page at http:// fundraise.barbellsforboobs.org/ crossfitzachary.

In Our Community Two Books Detailing Zachary Area History Donated to ZHS
By James Ronald Skains
Two books recently donated to the Zachary High School Library cover two different eras in the history of Zachary-Port Hudson-Plains area. The first book to discuss is Out of Wildwood by Elizabeth Jameson Verdino who spent 7 years researching and writing the book. It chronicles the life of her grandmother, Alberta “Bert” McVea Lilley, who grew up at Wildwood Plantation located at the time in Old Port Hudson. After the Civil War, “Wildwood Plantation” was moved from Port Hudson to its present day location off Highway 68 which runs from Highway 61 to the town of Jackson. After being moved, it was restored to its original Acadian style and is now a private residence. “Bert” McVea married and moved from Wildwood Plantation to the “Wild West lands” of Pecos, Texas; however, she never forgot her days at Wildwood or her family that remained at Wildwood and in the Plains area. Elizabeth Jameson Verdino, “Bert’s” only granddaughter, tells the story of “Bert” McVea Lilly and her extended family through a collection of personal letters between family members and treasured photographs. Out of Wildwood is a true story throughout with only an occasional “hearsay” item that is noted as such. Bert lived in that special time
in American History following the tragic era of the Civil War. However, she lived well into the 20th Century and accomplished extraordinary things, although she was basically an ordinary woman according to her granddaughter. This treasure trove of letters and pictures used by the author, Verdino, captures several generations of the extended McVea family, and “Bert’s” courtship with her husband John (John Young Lilly), their marriage, their unbearable separations and the tragedies that befell her as she socially and heroically took her place as a modern woman in a world of men. Out of Wildwood does present an in-depth look at day-to-day activities of a by-gone era through the eyes of generations of family who called the Plains and Felicianas home. It is a carefully crafted family memoire of lives and loves, and of hardships and hope. Verdino calls the writing and publishing of “Out of Wildwood,” her life’s most interesting work. On hand at the City of Zachary Archives to receive both books recounting the history of the area was Wes Watts, Principal of Zachary High School. “It is awesome to think of books written that are centered around the area in which you live and work,’’ Watts told the Zachary POST. “This will give our students at Zachary High School another great tool by
which to connect to the real history of our area by people who actually lived here.” Also, on hand to stand in for the authors in the presentation was Betty Tucker, official City of Zachary Archivist and President of the Zachary Historical Association. Betty Tucker aided Verdino in her research and was acknowledged as a contributor in “Out of Wildwood.” Virginia Jennings, another prominently known historian of the Plains area is also mentioned in Verdino’s book. The second book to be donated to the Zachary High School Library on October 3 is entitled: “Crossroads of Memories – Growing up in the Plains.” The author, Walter Earl Wardell, is a 1958 graduate of Zachary High School. Wardell notes that he was born at Field Hospital in Centerville, Mississippi. His parents, Walter and Ruth Wardell were managing the Plains Store in 1944, the year Walter Earl was born. The family lived in the rear of the Plains Store at the time that Walter Earl was born. Wardell also noted that, according to family history, the invoice for his birth at the Centerville Hospital was a “whopping” $116. Wardell, now living in South Carolina has published two other books set in the 19th Century. Never straying for from his roots in his writing, Wardell is now working on a manuscript that he has titled: “The Plains Store Rangers – A Brief Bi-
ography of Captain Gilbert Collins Mills” Robert Thomas Young built the first structure of the Plains Store around 1850. It was partially destroyed during the Civil War battle of the “Plains Store.” Through successions of owners and buildings that either burned or were torn down to make room for newer stores, the Plains store was always located in the northwest quadrant of the old Bayou Sara-Clinton Road. Wardell tells what it was like to grow up as the son of rural storekeepers in a historical area. The author also recounts his days as a student at Zachary High School and all the activities that teenagers living in the Plains and Zachary area undertook in the 1950’s. Betty Tucker also was recognized as a contributor of research to Wardell for his book. Betty served as Master of Ceremonies for the presentation of the books to Wes Watts representing Zachary High. Adonica Duggan with the Zachary School System helped arrange the presentation and was present, along with Sharon Phillips and Jean Byers with the City of Zachary. In her remarks, Betty Tucker noted as she pointed to the numerous archive files in the room, “There is so much history in Zachary, Plains and Port Hudson that I just wish we could find some way to get more high school students interested in their local history.’’

Zachary Carpentry Program Prepares Students for Workforce The Zachary Career and Technical Center carpentry program is getting into the swing of things under the leadership of experienced teacher Gary Larkin. Larkin’s vision for the program is taking shape despite the fact that construction on the new facility at the Port Hudson site is not scheduled for completion until early next month. At that time the classes will move into a new state-of-the-art construction bay and classroom outfitted with the latest equipment and technology, but Larkin isn’t wasting any time waiting for the space to be complete. When students in the newly established Career and Technical satellite campus enrolled in the construction program, few would have imagined that just a couple of months into school they would have built their own tool boxes, constructed a storage shed, built benches and started on their own personal projects. The roughly 30 students in the 100 minute block in the class are on a path to NCCER certification. New to Zachary Community Schools this year, Larkin has previous experience developing new carpentry programs, and also brought with him a passion for his students and seeing them grow. “The second we interviewed him I knew that he would bring something special to this district,” Human Resources Director Yolanda Williams said. Last month, Larkin took his students on a trip to the LSU Rural Life
tion when they move into their new space. She also added that this will contribute to the on-the-job atmosphere Larkin is developing and the program goals of giving students the soft skills necessary to be a success in the workforce. “We are really excited about new career tech programs at ZCTC. Our instructors are teaching the skills needed to help students leave high school with credentials that lead to jobs in high growth, high wage occupations,” said Zachary Community School District Career and Technical Education Program Supervisor Tim Jordan. The carpentry program is off to a great start. Keep an eye out for these future carpenters. Administrators say they plan to have the student work on display and for sale at various opportunities throughout the community.
Museum to explore historical building techniques and tools. While there, Larkin and his students were taken with the facility and wanted to find a way to give back. They agreed to build a bench to be auctioned at the Red Rooster Bash silent auction and returned to school and immediately got to work on their new task. The excitement the program is generating among students is evident as visitors to the campus are met with students eager to share their latest projects. Kim Germany says Zachary Career and Technical Center administration plans to add a time clock to track student hours towards their certifica-

GP Employees Charity Motorcycle Ride
The students and teachers at Northwestern Middle School were recently made aware of a need for used T-shirts for a Mission Project. The shirts were to be cut and sewn into cloth diapers for a community in Guatemala. The idea blossomed when one teacher asked other teachers if they had any old T-shirts they were willing to donate. The word quickly caught on with the students also, and shirts began arriving at school. Over 300 T-shirts were collected in only 4 days. The middle school art department using a simple pattern cut the shirts. Then they were given to several ladies from the First Baptist Church of Zachary who spent a Friday night sewing the shirts into cloth diapers that will be taken to a community in Guatemala in late October. The students were so excited about meeting the needs of others that they want to do another T-shirt drive and make more diapers. The project reached into many classes including Spanish. The students in Spanish are writing notes and letters (in Spanish, of course) to attach to the diapers. The notes will provide words of encouragement for the people there.
