BEST SCHOOLS IN STATE

Zachary Community School District State’s Top Performing District for 9th Consecutive Year

When the Louisiana Department of Education conducted the fall 2013 Accountability release Thursday, the Zachary Community School District was identified as the top performing school district in the state for the ninth year in a row, and all schools within the district received an “A” ranking. There were several changes to how the School and District Performance Scores were provided this year. In the 2013 data release districts and schools received one score based on the “old scale” and a new score which reflects a change in the calculations. In the new system, elementary and middle school attendance rates are

no longer a factor, the high school scores include ACT performance, and high school credits earned by middle school students account for 5 percent of the scores at the middle school level. The Zachary Community School District received a letter grade of “A” on the old system and “A” on the new scale. “I am so proud of our teachers and students for once again setting the bar high. Their efforts, and those of an entire community committed to quality education continue to push Zachary forward towards the model of excellence we strive to embody,” Superintendent

CrossFit Zachary Hosts Ribbon Cutting

On Monday, October 21, CrossFit Zachary celebrated two years of business with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Owner Fabian Herrera is proud to be the first CrossFit gym, or as some call it the “Box”, in Zachary offering group functional training. The “Box” is located at located at 5041 Hwy. 19, Unit C. There are many different training class times available. On weekdays, classes start as early as 5:30am. Mid-morning and evening classes are also available. On Saturdays, morning group classes are offered. Not only is CrossFit whipping Zachary residents into shape, but the organization also believes in giving back to the community. On Saturday, November 2 at 10:30am, CrossFit Zachary will host the First Annual Barbells for Boobs fundraiser. Barbells for Boobs is a non-profit organization that provides funding to pay for breast cancer detection services as a last resort for

thousands of people who don’t qualify for assistance elsewhere. Funds raised through Barbells for Boobs go directly to the Mammograms in Action Grant Program. Every $80 donated helps fund one mammogram for someone in need. Members who raise at least $80 will receive a Barbells for Boobs t-shirt. Anyone can participate in the fundraising efforts, one does not have to be a CrossFit member. Visit their fundraising page at http://fundraise. barbellsforboobs.org/crossfitzachary

to find out how you can help. “My favorite part of CrossFit is the sense of community that exists. We are surrounded by those striving for the best within themselves and it makes all of us take it up a notch, demanding the same from ourselves. The level of support and determination is contagious,” says Fabian Herrara, owner and trainer. Scott Devillier said. School and District Performance Scores provide the most widely accepted data on how students are meeting state accountability measures. The district achieved a District Performance Score of 109.1 on the new scale and grew from 134.7 to 136.0 on comparisons made using the old scale. Copper Mill Elementary, Northwestern Middle and Zachary High were identified as Top Gains schools. “I am especially grateful to the outstanding, professional educators of the Zachary Community School

District. This is a challenging time in education in our state, and they continue to provide outstanding educational opportunities for our students,” Devillier said. Zachary Community Schools have always maintained high academic standards, and with a more rigorous curriculum teachers are ensuring that the education Zachary students receive will prepare them for college and future success, Devillier continued. In addition to the performance score rating changes, the Louisiana Department of Education has revised the format of the 2013 School Performance Report. Gayden and Ida Brooks celebrate 60th Anniversary

Births • Engagements • Weddings • Awards Obituaries • Anniversaries • Reunions

Gayden and Ida Brooks Perkins celebrated 60 years of matrimony this summer on July 26, 2013. During their 60 years of marriage, 13 children were born, consisting of 10 boys and three girls! All of the children are still living except one, Gayden Perkins Jr. All of the couple’s 13 kids graduated from Zachary High School and some went on to further their education. The Perkins have lived in Zachary for over 50 years. The Perkins believe in worshipping the Lord and feel that ‘if you spare the rod, you spoil the child.’ “In this day and time, parents find it difficult in rearing just one or two children. We did not plan on having a big family, but that’s what God made it to be. The pressure on both parents working outside the home is hard in today’s time…there’s nobody home with the children and they seem to think they are raising themselves,” said Gayden Perkins. “There are all kinds of evils and dangers on the streets, and kids will do kid things. Things were not as hard when we brought our kids up,” said Ida Perkins. “My wife would get up at 4 a.m. for her big family,” says Gayden. “She would cook 50 biscuits and sausage for breakfast. She would iron and starch her childrens’ jeans and clothes, making sure they had a fresh pair each and everyday for school,” said Gayden. “If one of our children should show out at school my wife would tell the principal he had their okay to discipline them, but in today’s time the parents don’t want the teacher or the principal telling their kids anything,” said Perkins. “We’re glad that we were able to raise our children on a farm. They didn’t have time to run up and down the streets and they had chores and farm animals to keep them busy.” Gayden says that in the Perkins home, all the kids went to Sunday School because he was their teacher. “When our boys were in school playing football we went to their games and supported them,” the patriarch said. “Once that child is older, he or she can’t get those years back.” “God has been good to us,” said Gayden Perkins. Ida Perkins is in her 80s and still cooks biscuits and Gayden Perkins is in his 90s and still teaches Sunday School at Fairview Baptist Church in Jackson!

Ethel Lea Hargrove Hinton

On October 12, 2013, God saw that she was tired and called her home after a short illness at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, Baton Rouge. She was born in Delta, La. on January 7, 1928 to George A and Dottie Curry Hargrove and was a resident of Ferriday, La for 44 years. She was an active 85 year old Church member of Westside Baptist Church, a former Bell South telephone operator, and a former Riverland Hospital CNA. But the most important role of all she held was Mama, Mom, MawMaw, Little MawMaw, and Lake MawMaw to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She had a special love for her family, friends, and church members, loved to play dominos and catch phrase, loved to travel anytime she was asked, and will be missed terribly by all who knew and loved her. Visitation was held at Westside Baptist Church, Ferriday, on Tuesday from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and religious services will begin at 10:00 am, Wednesday, conducted by Brother Larry Wagoner. A graveside service was held at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe at 3:00 pm Wednesday. Ethel is survived by her sister, Maxine Taylor, Sumter, SC; her 4 children and their spouses; Douglas and Amanda Hinton, Monroe, Debra and Bryan Smith, Jacksonville, Fla., Jennifer and Donald Bradley, Zachary, La, and Gary Hinton, Ferriday; 6 grandchildren and spouses; Bryan and Jennifer Smith, Jacksonville, Fla., Ricky and Rebecca Hinton, Baton Rouge, Steve Hinton, Ferriday, Jaimee and Justin O’Banion, Central, La, Andrew and Laureen Hinton, Nashville, Tenn., and Derrick Bradley, Ruston, La; 6 great-grandchildren; Hunter Hinton, Reece Hinton, Addison and Aubrey Smith, Jacksonville, Abram Hinton, Nashville, and Jolee O’Banion, (due December 2013), Central, La.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 50 years, Clyde Hinton; a brother, Grover Hargrove; two sisters, Sybil Hargrove and Vera Hargrove Sells. Pallbearers were her grandsons; Bryan Smith, Ricky Hinton, Steve Hinton, Andrew Hinton, Derrick Bradley, and Justin O’Banion. Funeral arrangements were handled by Comer Funeral Home.
