Horton Honored for Lifetime of Service Longtime Zachary City Councilman, Teacher, Community Volunteer saluted at reception By Gwendolyn K. Perry Honore

A celebration was held for former Northwestern High school teacher and Zachary City Councilman David Horton on Sunday, Nov. 3 at the newly renovated Zachary Men’s Club,. The event was hosted by the Zachary Men’s Club and the City of Zachary, and supported by friends, local organizations, family and the community. William “Bill” Johnson, a former Zachary Police Officer and former student of Horton, served as Master of Ceremony. Johnson said he considers the honoree as the best teacher who came out of Northwestern. “He was a very humble man and the only councilman running for office who made his own signs.” He said Horton made two signs and one of those were in the front of his own house.” David Amrhein, Mayor of Zachary, said the councilman helped everyone and if he couldn’t help you, he told you when he couldn’t. Mayor Amrhein said he has only given two keys to the city, and one was given to Horton. David McDavid, Zachary’s Chief of Police, said he was a student in his class 35 years ago. He knew him later in office as a man who asked for nothing. “He always worked for the city,” McDavid noted. Barbara Banks Franklin, who said he is her neighbor, friend and former teacher, rendered a beautiful music medley. “I have appreciated his kindness through the years,” she said. Jerry Boudreaux, who served as principal of Zachary High School for 25 years, said he has known Horton since 1969. He gave a brief history of the man and friend he knows: First, he noted that Horton came to Zachary from Pointe Coupee Parish, and taught school beginning in 1951 until 1979. When his children came to Northwestern Middle School, his five children were in his class, and they

loved Louisiana History. He also noted that he served on the Zachary City Council for 28.5 years. “He is a very special person, always wearing a smile, courteous, and helpful,” Boudreaux said. He was very helpful to those who went to him with a legitimate case, and he was always polite and a pleasure to deal with. You never went for help and he didn’t help, he said. “We have a nice city and a school in Zachary, but none of that started yesterday, “ he said. “1970 wasn’t an easy thing to do, but we are on top today.” Jessie Spears, community activist and friend, said he met Horton in the 40s. “Both of us were hitch hiking to Southern University. Since that time, we have been friends,” Spears said. He told of how they had run for city office in Zachary and the

soft-spoken Horton won on his first effort. “He understood how to beat the odds. You can’t win four against one, but he learned how to do it,” he said. The event was topped off by a very grateful and hilarious speech by the honoree, who received several certificates of recognition, a plaque and resolutions by Councilman Trae Welch, Senator Sharon W. Broome, Councilwoman Ronnie Edwards and the Zachary Men’s Club. “In order to be the kind of person you have painted me to be, you have to be the kind of friends you are. Anything I had to do couldn’t have been done without people like you. In reference to the occasion which was to be a surprise, he jokingly said, “I am thankful to those who thought about doing this, and not thankful for

those who looked me in the eyes and knew what was going on,” he said. He also added that someone mistakenly told him about a dinner. “Instead of giving me a key to the city some years ago, they could have given me a key out of the city,” he laughed. “Wouldn’t we have a wonderful world, if everyone my age, 25, could say they have lived a life that could be celebrated?” “Thank you so much for being so kind, to show me my roses while I am living. I will continue as long as I am on this earth, to do good things. You care about your community; you care about your country. To do that, you do those things that make your community and country a good place to live. I pray that Zachary will maintain the good name it has established for itself,” Horton said.

The clinic has been open since September and is located at 4242 Highway 19, Suite C, across from Superior Ford. Pictured above: Kate MacArthur (left). Economic Development Director and Brent Bradley (right) President of the Zachary Chamber of Commerce present Patrick Campbell (center) with the Mid-Sized Business of the Year Award.

On Thursday, October 17, Superior Ford was awarded Mid-Size Business of the Year at the Zachary Chamber of Commerce Business Awards Banquet held at St. John the Baptist Church. Patrick Campbell, owner of Superior Ford, accepted the award just one month after his one year anniversary of taking over the dealership. In September of 2012, Campbell bought the dealership from Adrian Harris. Since taking over Superior Ford, community involvement has become a priority. Superior Ford participates yearly in Ford Motor Company’s Drive 4 UR School Event benefiting Zachary High School. This year,

$6,000 was raised for school programs simply through test drives of Ford vehicles. This month, Superior is a sponsor of the Fall Family Fair with proceeds of the fair benefiting Lane RMC Foundation’s Cancer Services project which will bring a state-ofthe-art Radiation Oncology Center to Zachary in early 2014. “Zachary is an amazing city. I am so honored to be recognized by other business owners and members of the Chamber. I have an exceptional staff and we work hard to provide the best customer service to Zachary. We are proud to be a part of the community,” says Campbell.
