But continued support necessary to maintain first class facility
With the holidays fast approaching and the need at an all time high, the Zachary Food Pantry recently asked the community for a little more help. This past week the generous Zachary community in conjunction with Zachary Schools, City Hall, and numerous local business and civic organizations donated thousands of dollars and tons of food to Pack the Pantry. Anyone can continue to drop off canned goods to be given out to families in need. Food pantry staff says Thanksgiving and Christmas are high demand seasons, so every donation helps. “We even had one lady who shed tears because she was so apprecia- The first and second graders at Rollins Place Elementary went into high gear to Pack tive of what we were able to do for the Pantry this year, the students collected thousands of pounds of food for the Zachary Food Bank.

At Thursday’s Rotary Club of Zachary, Brandon Noel was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. The presentation of Paul Harris Fellow recognition is The Rotary Foundation’s way of expressing its appreciation for a substantial contribution to its humanitarian and educational programs. It is named for Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who started Rotary International with three business associates in 1905. her,” said Zachary food pantry director, Reginald Dykes. “We depend on donations from the community.” With the funds raised through events such as Pack the Pantry, the Zachary Community Food Pantry is able to provide much needed food for the hungry. The organization is celebrating its one-year anniversary since moving into their new building on Rollins Road on property donated by the Zachary Men’s club. The food pantry serves over 200 families in the Zachary community, as well as residents in the town of Slaughter each month. The Zachary food pantry fed over seven hundred people last month. The ZFD presented a check to Susan G. Koman today, Friday, November 08, 2013 in the amount of $2,765.88. The ZFD helped raise money, thanks to local businesses who purchased a pink helmet. The firefighters wore pink helmets the entire month of October on every call. They could not have done this without the help of all businesses who participated. This is the 2nd year that the ZFD has been able to raise money for Susan G. Koman. ACS and Local Restaurants Team Up in November
During the month of November, American Cancer Society is teaming up with some of the local Zachary restaurants to show support in the community for the fight against cancer for the first ever Relay Restaurant Give Back. All you have to do is eat out on Tuesdays for lunch or dinner on designated days during the month of November and each restaurant will donate 10-20% (depending on the restaurant) of their proceeds of the entire day back to Relay for Life. Just make sure you mention Relay For Life when you order. Enjoy lunch or dinner at the following restaurants and support a great cause! November 19 - Raising Cane’s November 26 - Cabba’s Steak and Seafood
On Friday, November 8th, Jack Dunford spent an entire day at the Zachary Fire Department with Chief Kimble and was also given an official Fire Chief shirt to wear. He went through some of the daily routines at the Fire Station which include inspecting fire trucks, viewing all the fire equipment, went on a few emergency calls, and even got to spray the fire hose. The Firemen on shift that day all became friends with Jack, and enjoyed seeing a young boy so eager to learn about everything that goes with running a Fire Department. At the end of the day, he was presented a badge, Fire Chief certificate, and excited to keep his customized shirt just for him!

Zachary High Marketing Program Receives MERA Grant
The Zachary High School Marketing Program was recently awarded a grant of $3,700 from the Marketing Education Retail Alliance (MERA). MERA was created in 2000 and is administered by the Louisiana Retailers Association. MERA grants are funded through the Louisiana Department of Economic Development under the authority of LA R.S. 47:318. The MERA grant provides funds for students to attend leadership training and the state DECA conference and training to improve skills through customer service marketing activities. Students worked with marketing simulations that improve their abilities to provide better customer service, product knowledge, and follow-up procedures and will also compete in various marketing related competitive events
at the state conference in February. The students will then apply what they learn in role-play work scenarios that carried over into real-life experiences in their workplaces. Upon completion of the training, the students will take the National Customer Service Examination. The significance of the National Professional Certification in Customer Service affects everyone: the school, students, and employers. It validates that learning took place in the classroom and that class objectives meet industry needs, including rigor and relevance because these certification standards are set by the industry. Students leave the class with an industrydeveloped credential that demonstrates their potential to future employers.
Local Zachary businesses SERCO and Fabex recently donated a 75 gallon jambalaya pot and burner to the Zachary Fire Department. “This is just another example of the generosity and support we receive at the City of Zachary from businesses in the area who are always willing to join together to help us in our community efforts,” says Zachary Fire Chief Danny Kimble. According to Ronnie Byrd, CEO of SERCO, 30 to 40 man hours were donated to construct the pot. “We were proud to be able to give something back to the community and hope this will aid the Fire Department in their community outreach events held throughout the year,” says Ronnie Byrd. The pot, which will feed approximately 400 - 500 was recently tested by the fire department during the Mayor’s Employee Appreciation Day lunch. Pastalaya was served to all all city employees. Mobley Brothers Expanding Fantastic Sams Concepts By James Ronald Skains
The Mobley bothers have neither hair stylist nor salon care expertise. However, what they do have is many years of business experience. “When we came across the Fantastic Sam’s franchise opportunity, we liked what we saw, although Billy and I knew very little about the nuts and bolts of the hair care business,’’ Jimmy Mobley told the POST. “Fantastic Sam’s had a track record of 37 years in business and a business model that was working in more than 1200 stores nationwide. We liked their business model and we felt confident that we could find top stylists and mangers, while Billy and I concentrated on the management and promotional aspect of the business. “We realized that hair care was a growing industry and was constantly changing with new consumer’s needs,’’ Mobley acknowledged. “We also realized that our management and operating experience from our Blockbuster franchise store days would be very helpful in this environment.” “Fantastic Sam’s use their own brand of hair care products (Fantastic Complex) plus all the other leading hair care products. They have an excellent training program that keeps the entire stylist team up to date on the latest hair care trends. We also felt good about the stability of the industry because we knew that the Internet would never be able to give people hair care service.” “That was the unexpected negative factor with our Blockbuster Stores. The internet was able to change the entire movie rental business from the Blockbusters store rental concept,” Jimmy added. The Mobley brothers grew up in the Greenwell Springs/Sullivan Road area and attended Central High School. During their teenage years, the brothers began their business careers by helping their Dad with his

multi-store locations of Curtis Mathis TV and Huard’s Furniture & Electronics Stores in Baton Rouge and South Louisiana. After their dad retired, and the business changed, the Mobley brothers invested in a number of Blockbuster store locations in south Louisiana. Their last remaining Blockbuster store is in Opelousas located in a former Huard’s building which the brothers still own. Fantastic Sam’s is owned by French Hair Care Company that also owns numerous hair care salons in Europe and the USA. The French company has their own hair care product development laboratory in which they are constantly working to upgrade their current products and develop new hair care products. “For us, as a franchisee, the corporate structure of Fantastic Sam’s is another plus. Being owned by a larger line of international hair care products and salon operators gives us access to a lot of leading edge prod-
ucts and industry trends,’’ Mobley explained. “Also, Fantastic Sam’s gives us an advantage in attracting stylists. Because we offer multi-line hair care services, it gives the stylists the opportunity to practice all phases of hair care which they learned in school.” “The French Company has top echelon hair salons that are only located in cities like Houston and Dallas where each visit to the salon costs $400-$500. I’m sure there are some trickle-down benefits from the top echelon salons owned by the French Company to our Fantastic Sam’s stores.” Fantastic Sam’s has had a presence in Zachary since the mid-1990s. After initially purchasing existing Fantastic Sam’s franchise in southwest Louisiana, the Mobley brothers purchased the Zachary and Central locations from Frank Reda. Reda operates Fantastic Sam’s salons in numerous locations in the Baton
Rouge metro area and across south Louisiana. “We are planning on opening a location soon in Carencro north of Lafayette,’’ Mobley noted. “We hope to have a location on the south side of Lafayette, near Youngsville sometime in 2014.” “We think that Baton Rouge and the surrounding area offers a lot of opportunity for more Fantastic Sam’s locations. We want to always offer quality hair care services at reasonable prices. Our ultimate goal is to make our customers look and feel fantastic.” “Billy and I do a lot of the work ourselves in opening up new locations,” Jimmy explained. “This saves us some money and has helped us learn the nuts and bolts of the Fantastic Sam’s program.” “After the stores are in operation, on a day to day basis, Billy handles most of the operational end of the business and I handle the advertising promotion aspects. However, at times we find ourselves working together on different aspects of the business.” Both Jimmy and Billy Mobley are LSU graduates. They remain strong “Tiger Fans” and attend most home football games although Billy lives in Lafayette. Jimmy has a degree in Business Management from LSU while Billy has a degree in forestry. Jimmy is also active in the Broadmoor Methodist Church. The Mobley brothers also own property on Toledo Bend Lake that they frequent in their spare time. Both are golfers, but Jimmy also often plays tennis, time permitting. “We like for each of our locations to stay active in what is happening in the community, especially with the schools,” Mobley concluded. “We try to be very supportive of the schools. We want the teenagers to visit our stores at a young age to begin having their “Fantastic Sam’s hair care experiences.”

Bank of Zachary Holds 5th Annual Salute to Veterans
By James Ronald Skains
At the 0730 hour, under a bright sunshiny sky with a hint of cool air, the Bank of Zachary kicked off their 5th annual Veterans Day Flag Raising ceremony at their main office at 4743 Main Street. The Junior ROTC from Zachary High School provided the Flag Detail. Under the direction of Band Director Jason Venable, and Choir Director Jason Bowers, the Zachary High School Band and Choir also known as the “Bronco Beats” serenaded those veterans and civilians in attendance with patriotic music. Preston Kennedy with the Bank of Zachary functioned as master of ceremonies. In his opening remarks, Kennedy said: “Lt Colonel Oliver North defines “hero” as one who overcomes evil by doing good at great personal risk. Throughout the history of our nation, citizen patriots have time after time answered the call to overcome evil, they have assuredly done so by immeasurable good, and anyone who ever put on the uniform of the United States of America certainly did so at a great personal risk.” Kennedy added: “In the words of author Lane Evans: Without the brave efforts of all the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines and their families, this Nation, along with our allies around the world, would not stand so boldly, shine so brightly and live so freely.” “Our purpose here today is to honor our country by saying thank you to all the veterans with us today,” Kennedy concluded.
After the singing of the National Anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Keith London. London is currently on the Baker Police force but prior to that duty, he served as a Combat Engineer with the 927th Sapper Unit of the Army National Guard. Following the Pledge, members of the Zachary ROTC unit presented the colors led by Sergeant First Class Andrew Bradford. During the first part of the ceremony, a helicopter flyover was made by pilot Brian Spillman of the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office. Following the patriotic music, Randall M. Olson was introduced by Kennedy as the keynote speaker. Olsen emphasized: “If you know a veteran or meet a veteran, take the time to get to know them. Every Veteran has a unique distinct story to tell about their time in uniform.” “Some veterans may have had a more significant assignment during their time in uniform than others,” Olsen pointed out. “However, the military can only function efficiently if every person is carrying out their assignment to the best of their ability.” Olsen is the Chief Executive of Lane Regional Hospital. Olsen is also a native of Minnesota. He graduated from the University of Minnesota before attending Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. He was commissioned as an Ensign in December 1972 near the end of the Vietnam War. During his four years of active duty, he served on the destroyer USS William Wood spending much of

that time stationed in Greece. Olsen served another four years in the Naval Reserves, before being discharged as a Lieutenant Commander in 1980. Before becoming CEO of Lane Regional Medical Center in Zachary 10 years ago, Olsen served as administrator at hospitals in South Caroline and Tennessee. He also worked in management at hospitals in Minnesota. “Most veterans are reluctant to talk about their military service unless asked directly,” Olsen added. “During the time each veteran was in uniform, they were in some way responsible for the freedom and protection that our country has today. It is always appropriate to thank a veteran for taking time out of their lives to help insure the American way of life.” Included in the numerous veterans
in attendance at the Bank of Zachary salute were Irby Magee and Bobby Snowden. Snowden served in the US Army in Korea during the height of the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. Magee, on the other hand spent a career with the US Coast Guard. “I joined the Coast Guard at age 17 in New Orleans. They sent us to Alameda California for training. Our group got there after dark. It was misty and foggy, really eerie down on the docks where we were to report. When drill officer started talking rough to us new recruits, I looked around at all the water and fog and decided I wanted to go back home. But I got over being homesick and had a wonderful career in the Coast Guard.” After the ceremony ended, refreshments were served for the attendees by the Bank of Zachary.
