Zachary Celebrates Christmas Season

Saturday afternoon the City of Zachary’s annual Christmas Parade and Open House attracted thousands of people to town for a taste of the Christmas season. The celebration began with the 100+ parade float procession from LeBlanc’s Supermarket eastward to Hwy 19. When the parade ended, the Open House began with the masses enjoying free food and crafts. The evening culminated with the Christmas classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” being shown in the Historic Village on a big screen. Congratulations to the 2012 Zachary Christmas Parade winners: Best Marching- Fitness Design for Women “Duck Dynasty” Best Riding- Cooper Vet Angels Among Us “Batteries not included” Best Float- Zachary Cub Scout Pack 46 “Wilderness” Best Display of Theme - Zachary United Methodist Church “Flintstones” Honorable Mentions - Georgia–Pacific’s Brawny Air Cannon and Krispy Kreme’s throws were a huge hit with the crowd!

Voting Has Begun, Public Invited to Choose 2012 Hometown Hero

This past September, the Zachary Post and Feliciana Explorer family of newspapers accepted nominations from the public for the 2012 Home-

town Heroes award. This week, online voting has begun and you may now vote for the hero that most in-

spires you. The competition, in its inaugural year, was conceived to honor individuals whose generosity and selflessness seems to know no limits, who work while others are sleeping, and who stand up when others stand down. Staff at the Post and the Explorer were so pleased to receive so many nominations, yet overwhelmed with the difficult task of narrowing down the field of deserving nominees to five finalists. Guided by the criteria for nomi-

nation, staff chose Jonathan Loveall of Clinton, Shirley Sibley of Jackson, Mary Bellcase of Zachary, Ann Holland of Clinton, and Sharon Phenald of Zachary as the five Hometown Heroes finalists. Starting November 13, the stories of these five individuals’ good works were published in print and online over the course of five weeks. With the final story published last week, voting has now commenced online at www.zacharypost.com or www.felicianaexplorer.com. You may vote once for the hero that most inspires you. Voting will take place over the

course of four weeks, starting Monday, December 17, 2012 and ending Friday, January 11, 2013. The winner will be awarded $500 to be donated to the charitable organization of his or her choice. For those requiring a refresher, the finalists’ stories can all be read online. Alternately, you may wait to read their stories in the January 1, 2013 issue of the paper where they will be reprinted collectively. We hope that you will take some time out from the hustle and bustle of the season to recognize our most inspiring givers by voting for your favorite Hometown Hero.

Zachary POST Tuesday, December 18, 2012

Letter to the Editor This is no new fangled cemetery with a lot of bells and whistles. It is still a simple country cemetery where men with shovels dig a grave inch by inch foot by foot just like they did nearly a century ago. There are no websites, FaceBook or MySpace pages. The average age of the remaining board members is 72 years old. They have provided a needed service for over a century, space to be buried in. Nearly a century ago the Black people of Zachary, Louisiana got together and organized a grave yard where their loved ones could be buried together with dignity. They did this during a time when there were few cars and most people got around by foot, wagon, horse, buggy. This grave yard serviced the black people of Zachary through the great depression, floods, and hurricanes. Many people left Zachary for work, marriage, war some returned after death to be buried in Zachary Public Cemetery. At some point it was realized that the Zachary Public Cemetery was the least expensive in the parish. Black Funeral Homes in Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas tried to help families of the uninsured by referring them to Zachary. Most recently outside forces have flown into our area accusing Zachary Public Cemetery of untrue things. They have captured the media with wild unfounded stories. They have petitioned the city from hotel rooms and posted on the web to bash a bunch of old men who have never

done anything but good and stood for nothing but right. There are bodies sitting in funerals homes right now because the families left behind do not have the money to bury them. Zachary Public Cemetery sent a letter out in November stating they are not accepting any more bodies at this time because of the insults, threats, name calling, harassing phone calls and general ugliness heaped up on them. A former Zachary resident said it best, “We need to be ashamed of ourselves because we as a people have come to the place where our family members die and we will not visit the grave. We will not go out and purchase a headstone in a timely manner. It’s a disgrace.” The funeral home places a little metal marker that will last a few months. There were so many unmarked graves in Zachary Public Cemetery that they started hand making wood markers with the deceased name on it and sent a letter to all the Funeral Homes which send bodies to them to let families know they were not responsible for markers or headstones. Zachary Public Cemetery is not required to make markers to put on the graves by law or by contract. Permanent headstones and grave markers are the family’s responsibility. Next door to Zachary Public Cemetery there is another cemetery. There are no wooden markers. There are a few confederate flags, flat grave markers, cement headstones, marble but no cemetery

markers made in wood. Why not? Because those people value their dead and the proof is in the headstones. They are not all fancy but they are all there. By contrast Zachary Public Cemetery started marking graves with wooden plaques because there were so many graves with no markers, no identification. Not just because of hurricane Katrina, Gustav and Isaac but because the family had never purchased one. Nobody called the press out when the first handmade, wooden marker was erected at no cost. Nobody gave Zachary Public Cemetery a pat on the back or shouted hurray for doing something right which they are not required by contract or by law to do. Zachary public does not have a grant or the backing of a monument company, it was established by people of character who knew right and wrong and valued truth. It was founded and stands on its reputation of a century of doing more with less. Stephanie Anthony, Baton Rouge Client Council

SUCCESSFUL HUNT

Fresina Harvests Rare Doe

Kyle Gordon Bags a Stag It’s not often that teens in Louisiana are able to experience a stag such as this, so it will be quite some time before this seventeen year old forgets his. Kyle Gordon took this beautiful 360-pound red stag on Wednesday, December 5 in Zachary. Pictured here are Kyle and his dog Reese who was thrilled with the kill too!

Tony Fresina killed the deer of a lifetime. Though she may not have horns, this Piebald doe is pretty rare.

BRYAN’S PLACE

After talking to a biologist, Fresina and his wife found out that Piebald is a genetic mutation that only effects 1 percent of the entire deer population. Most people go an entire lifetime without seeing one of these in the wild much less make a shot to harvest one. Fresina shot the 205 pound eight point the morning of November 30, 2012. He killed the Piebald doe we nicknamed “Spotty” the following morning. They were both shot in Wilkinson County, Miss. The doe is currently at the taxidermist being preserved in a full body mount.
