Heart Survivors Share Stories
On Friday, February 1, City of Zachary employees donned their scarlet, crimson, raspberry, rust, and fire engine red as part of the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day. National Wear Red day is an initiative of the AHA to raise awareness about heart disease, specifically among women. City employees and Mayor David Amrhein gathered Friday afternoon at the ZHS football field to recognize the battle waged against heart disease by two of Zachary’s younger heart survivors, Julianne Caperton and Jack Dickson. Julianne, 5, lives with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a rare heart defect of the left ventricle of the heart. She was diagnosed before birth, and on September 24, 2007 underwent her first open heart surgery at just five days old. Julianne struggled with an arrhythmia which caused a very fast heart rate, and at two weeks
old she went into cardiac arrest. She was placed on a heart-lung machine to recover, but suffered a stroke at six months old. Just two weeks after the stroke, she underwent her second surgery. In 2010 Julianne had her third heart surgery and, during her recovery, was part of a study funded by the American Heart Association aimed See SURVIVORS page 3
Now’s the Time for PreK Round Up Don’t worry if you missed PreK roundup. Zachary Early Learning Center is still enrolling students for the 2013-2014 school year. While it may seem a bit early to be thinking about August, Zachary Early Learning Center administration advises that it is important for the school to have the most accurate count possible prior to the beginning of summer to ensure proper staffing for the students. Zachary Early Learning Center opened its doors in 2010 and is the district’s PreK center providing a first-rate education to four year olds. In order to register for the PreK program, students must be four years old by September 30, 2013. Registration packets can be downloaded from the school website at www.zacharyelc.org. Parents are also asked to provide birth certificate, social security card, immunization records and four current proofs of residency. Last September, representatives of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) came to Zachary to unveil the latest plan for widening Hwy. 64. DOTD plans to widen LA 64, or Main St., between McHugh Rd. and the LA 19 intersection. The widening project would add a center lane for vehicles to make left turns into businesses. The project was intended to have begun by now and would have taken take nine to twelve months to complete. The project has been delayed at least six months, and possibly much longer, according to Brendan J. Rush, DOTD public relations manager. The earliest the project could possibly be bid out to contractors would be June 2013, with construction beginning several months after that. The project’s progress is con-
tingent upon acquiring all the rightsof-way for parcels of land on Hwy. 64 in the proposed construction zone. Louisiana DOTD officials are having difficulty acquiring the property owned by the United States Post Office next to Walmart. The state does not have the authority to use expropriation procedures against the federal government. The state has to acquire at total of at least 24 separate parcels of land for the project to move forward. The initial estimated budget for the highway widening project was between $3 and $4.5 million, not accounting for the purchase of rightsof-way from area businesses and land owners. Several business owners in attendance at the fall DOTD meeting said they either were negotiSee WIDENING page 11

at finding methods that could help ease recovery from the type of surgery Julianne underwent. Though she still deals with fast heart rate issues on occasion, Julianne is now doing very well. Zachary High School honor student Jack Dickson, 14, suffers from a congenital condition called Tetralogy of Fallot, a heart defect that causes low oxygenation of the blood. Jack, who is a triplet, underwent his first heart surgery at six weeks old and his second at 16 months. Jack’s pulmonary valve was replaced in a third surgery. Jack and Julianne’s amazing stories of survival can be traced back to organizations like the American Heart Association that help educate the public about heart conditions such as these while raising funds and providing research grants to cure heart disease–whether it be congenital, genetic or environmental. While Jack and Julianne have congenital heart conditions, many instances of heart disease are preventable with enough patient and public education. Towards that end, Mayor Amrhein has challenged area businesses to ‘Red Out,’ foregoing the traditional purple, gold, and green of the season in favor of red, red, and red. On February 14, the mayor will be judging registered entrants in the door decorating contest. The winner will receive a plaque and will have a picture posted on the American Heart Association’s Facebook page.
Pictured above is the decorated door of Superior Ford (left) and the inside decorations of City Hall. Businesses all around Zachary were asked to decorate their business locations in honor of American Heart Month.

Festive Fundraising Gala Huge Success The Zachary/Baker Chapter of the American Cancer Society (ACS) celebrated its 4th Annual Mardi Gras Gala and Silent Auction on February 2 at the Capital Center Hilton in downtown Baton Rouge. The event, which started four years ago as a Mardi Gras “party” to raise money for cancer research, has grown from 75 people in attendance, raising $2,500, to more than 350 people raising over $25,000. “This year, we feel as though we have more than done our part,” said Board Chair Renee Beadle. “This has all happened in four short years, and now that we have a great following and a great venue, I feel that we can only make it better in years to come. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us. This, to me, is just a personal challenge to strive to raise more money for American Cancer Society, give back to the community as well as just another way to show our support in the fight against cancer.” The 2013 American Cancer Society King is Tom Ed McHugh. Tom Ed was diagnosed with prostate cancer in November 2011 and had robotic surgery in January 2012, which gave him a great prognosis. Tom Ed is a lifelong resident of Zachary and has provided a huge legacy to the community. Tom Ed was the mayor for the city of Baton Rouge for 12 years. After serving three terms, he took the position of executive director of the Louisiana Municipal As-
sociation where he has worked for the past 12 years. Tom Ed has been married to his high school sweetheart for 47 years; they have three children and seven grandchildren. Tom Ed enjoys traveling, hunting, sports, reading and working in the yard. The Queen for 2013 is Danya Doiron Delapasse. Danya’s husband, Dustin was diagnosed with colon cancer in February 2011 and had his first surgery in July 2011 with treatments in between and a second surgery in September followed by chemotherapy. After a long, heroic struggle, Dustin passed away in September 2012. Danya has been a lifelong resident of Zachary and is also a business owner. She is a real estate agent with Remax First and is the owner of Bennett House Banquet Facility. She has four kids and is very involved in the community. Danya enjoys being with her family and friends, playing softball and working out. Committee members worked tirelessly to make this year’s gala a success. Ball Captain (Board Chair) Renee Beadle has been an active member of the ACS Relay for Life for two years. She is the activities and entertainment co-chair for 2012 and the activities and entertainment co-chair and sponsorships co-chair for 2013 Relay for Life. Renee became involved with Relay For Life and ACS in honor of her Aunt Lane and in memory of her Uncle Jim as well as her grandparents. Renee is

Nurses Hold Evidence-Based Practice Expo at Lane
Nurses from Lane Regional Medical Center, Louisiana’s first Pathway to Excellence facility, participated in their 4th Annual Evidence-Based Practice Expo this January. Since 2009, nurses throughout the organization have actively engaged in evidence-based practice projects that have changed protocols, improved patient care, and positively affected patient outcomes. The expo provided the participants with an opportu-
nity to showcase their research and positively promote shared governance initiatives. Projects presented at the Expo included two emergency room experiments, projects investigating patient comfort with regard to specific procedures, cost reduction proposals, possible improvements in communication procedures and even the benefits of patient journaling.

Bright Beginnings Celebrates Four Star Designation
We’ll bend over backwards to help you feel better.
by
Nalini Raghavan Gore
Toddlers draped in Mardi Gras beads and masks quietly filed in to pose for a picture last Friday at Bright Beginnings Child Development Center, joining Director and Owner Stacey Betz and their teachers in celebrating the Center’s four star rating. Betz, a former substitute teacher who has worked in early childhood development since 2006, opened the Center in October of 2011. She immediately sought to have the Center assessed by the state’s Quality Start Child Care Rating System, which rates day cares in three areas: teacher training, class observation and administrative practices. The assessment program is voluntary (though it will become mandatory in 2015 under the new Act III legislation)
and involves random, on-site assessments conducted by independent evaluators. In only a year and two months, the Center earned it’s four star rating. The highest rating a day care center can receive is five stars. Currently at its full capacity of 78 children, Betz explained that the Center has a waiting list through August of 2014. That list may loosen up a bit when she relocates to a larger facility–hopefully by August of this year. With this additional space, Betz says the Center will be able to accommodate 70 additional children ages birth through four, and 50 elementary aged children for before and after care. To learn more about the Quality Start Program, visit www.qrslouisiana.org.

Local Youth Participate in March for Life Pilgrimage in D.C.
by
Theresa Dold Payment
Youth and adults from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church joined hundreds of thousands of participants from all across the country to show their opposition for abortion in the national March for Life in Washington D.C. last month. More than 1,200 youth and chaperones from Louisiana attended with around 400 of those, including priests and sisters, from the Diocese of Baton Rouge. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion, and the national March for Life is held each year to commemorate this decision. The group from Louisiana left on January 21 and experienced a ‘pilgrimage’ on the way, stopping at national Catholic shrines, colleges and seminaries along the way until joining hundreds of thousands of other marchers in front of the nation’s capitol. They braved freezing temperatures and snow to be ‘a voice for the
voiceless.’ The youth were also able to celebrate Mass at The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and tour national monuments, including the Lincoln and Vietnam Memorials, the National Holocaust Museum, the United States Capitol and several of the Smithsonian museums. Participants from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church were Jac Cantwell, Grady Cunningham, Morgan Dupre, Bailey Dixon, Ciara Gibbs, Alaina Gremillion, Sarah Grimball, Will Payne, Madison Weems, Mikki Bellard, Travis Gannfors, Aldhwin Garcia, Neil Garcia, Morgan McKey and Shelby Waddell. Chaperones and adults were Scott Dupre, Dr. Wayne Gravois, Julie Gravois, Carolyn Hardin, St. John Youth Minister Kim Landry, Suzanne Payne, Ric Smith and Wendy Archer.

The concert started off with the youth band of Fellowship and concluded with Christian artist John Tibbs. The idea for the benefit concert came after the youth band members became aware of Spillman’s story; they wanted to do something to help. “With February being Heart Health Awareness Month, it seemed the perfect time to show our sup-

Raising Cane’s Managing Partner Shawn Ventura was recently featured on a special segment of WBRZ Channel 2 News. The segment, titled “Making A Difference,” showcased Ventura’s school partnership, Raising Grades with Raising Cane’s. Three years ago Ventura pitched the idea of this partnership with local schools. The goal was to honor first through twelfth grade Zachary students who show the most academic improvement.
Ventura said during the segment, which aired on January 25, that the program is an incentive to keep students focused on achieving their academic goals. He explained that he hopes that kids who are struggling in school will not give up on their dreams but will, instead, realize that they can do anything in life. Raising Grades with Raising Cane’s offers students who meet the criteria a free lunch at Raising Cane’s every nine weeks.
