ZHS Boys’ Soccer Undefeated District Champs

The Zachary High School boys’ soccer team, already declared district champs, has done so undefeated! After beating Denham Springs 2-0 last Friday night, the team achieved an undefeated season, winning all 8 district games. Burke Daigle and Ja-

cob Garrett scored the two goals of the game. “After four years of building a team that can compete, we finally proved ourselves by going undefeated in district play. I am proud of the

team. This is a great group of boys who care about the success of the team and work hard to achieve their goals,” said Coach Scott Delhom. The JV team also had a victory over Denham with a score of 4-1.

Local musician and reigning Miss Greater Baton Rouge, Megan Miller, wowed American Idol judges last week and will be going to the main competition in Hollywood. She was selected as a finalist and received a “golden ticket” during an open audition in Baton Rouge after singing the Etta James classic Something’s Got A Hold On Me. Hoses Out-Duel Guns in Inaugural Flag Football Game

Thursday night, Zachary’s firefighters waged an offensive onslaught to defeat the Zachary police force 56-42 in the inaugural “Guns & Hoses” flag football fundraiser at Bronco Stadium. Several hundred interested spectators funneled into the stadium to watch the first responders duke it out. Both sides scored fast and often on numerous wild plays. The crowds were also entertained by the ZHS cheerleading squad and American Idol contestant Megan Miller.

American Idol judges Nikki Minaj and Mariah Carey were in awe of her abilities and swagger. Miller is the daughter of Donna and John Miller of Ethel, La. and is a Centreville Academy graduate. She has attended Southwest Mississippi Community College and is now a student at LSU where she is pursuing a degree in kinesiology. She is 23 years old. Miller has competed in several local talent contests, including winning the first talent contest at Zfest several years ago. She has her own band called The Megan Miller Band. Last Thursday night, Miller sang a heartfelt rendition of the national anthem at Bronco Stadium before the Guns vs. Hoses charity flag football game between the Zachary Police Department and the Zachary Fire Department.

The Lady Broncos won their first round playoff game Friday night against the very physical and talented Hahnville team. The Lady Broncos stepped up and played extremely big, never losing focus and not backing down to Hahnville’s rough play. The girls came out tough, scored early and played hard till the end. The final score was 2-1. The team extends special thanks to all the friends and family who took the road trip. They said it was pretty amazing to see more Zachary fans than the home team! Arts and Music Fest Planned for March

The Zachary Chamber of Commerce will host the 7th annual Zachary Arts and Music Festival on the grounds of BREC’s Community Park from March 21–24. There will be as many as 100 regionally and locally renowned artists selling their work, incredible food vendors, a petting zoo and pony rides, paddleboards on the lake, a rock wall, bungee bounce, gyroscope and many more activities for all ages to enjoy. Musical entertainment comes alive in the evenings with the Todd O’Neil Band, Chee Weez, Randy Houser and the Not4Sale Band. Local entertainment

will also be provided throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. “We look forward to a fun, family-oriented event with a new festival designed to have families affordably and comfortably stay all weekend to enjoy a true community atmosphere,” said Festival Director, Megan Andrews. State of the City January 10, 2013 celebrated the second year anniversary of the City of Zachary’s current administration and ushered in another year of dedicated work by City employees. The end result was good, necessary and a positive change for the City and its citizens. The expectation of personal accountability and the continued advancement of Zachary as an emerging leader within the State help drive and inspire our efforts. The City of Zachary is blessed with excellent District leadership provided by its five elected Councilmen: Messer’s John Coghlan, Francis Nezianya, Brandon Noel, Dan Wallis and Tommy Womack. Their unselfish and tireless efforts on behalf of the people they represent are evidenced daily through very positive feedback. It has been my pleasure to work with and learn from each of them during the past two years. A continued and ongoing improvement within the City’s governmental operation includes newer technology advancements designed to promote greater efficiency for our workforce and the public as well. The implementation of online bill payment and the soon-to-be-realized Customer Payment Kiosk at our Utilities Office are but a few of many site improvements. Zachary continues to enjoy a robust economy and a healthy surplus. Sales tax revenues and new construction starts remain high as our community continues to grow at a

welcome pace. Unfortunately, the costs associated with running local government increases daily, and Zachary is not immune. While rising operational costs cannot be ignored, the City has identified methods aimed at cost reduction while keeping a watchful eye on existing assets and resources. Very few opportunities remain available for local government to effectively generate its own revenue streams. The Zachary Youth Park has become that rare exception. Good and necessary change implemented over the past two years have substantially increased revenues for the City. We now host organized tournament play, have taken over the site concessions function and have professionally turfed four of the existing ball fields to assure continued play, even during periods of inclement weather. Zachary’s continuing economic development interests were greatly enhanced during the past year with the addition of a full-time economic development director. This appointment has already paid dividends through renewed interest in the promotion of Zachary as “the viable contender” in an emerging economic market. A proposed Industrial Park, other commercial interest attractions and Zachary’s Smart-Plus growth model holds promise for a bright economic future. The City’s ongoing implementation of new policies, procedures and processes help to assure not only ac-

countability, but consistency in the delivery of essential City services. A hazard mitigation plan developed by the City’s own workforce in 2011 survived its own “acid test” during Hurricane Isaac in late August of 2012. Plan implementation resulted in a more rapid deployment of “post mitigatory” relief measures, thus enabling Zachary to receive its FEMA cost share reimbursement within four months of the storms passage. Other strategic emergency planning during the past year included continued development of a “stand alone” all-hazard plan. A particular emphasis on school violence and related campus security remains a key consideration as we continue to partner with the Zachary Community School District in advancing this collaborative effort. Larger and critically important capital projects include a city-wide sewer improvements package funded by .95% DEQ monies, authorizing up to $14 million in overall improvements. Separate natural gas distribution system rehabilitation continues along Hwy. 64, funded by state capital outlay dollars and LGAP (Louisiana Government Assistance Program) funding. A separate Louisiana Community Development block grant will fund an $800,000 dollar water improvements project in an area west of Northwestern Middle School. Other projects of interests include LGAP funds for fire, police and public works equipment. A new

fire engine and support equipment funded through the Gustav/Ike recovery grant arrives later this spring. In reporting these accomplishments I would be remiss by not adding a caution. Zachary is not immune from the growing decline in the availability of state and federal support dollars. Traditional funding sources are becoming scarcer with each passing day. The expectation that we be able to do more with less has become reality. We are well aware that if we’re not receiving our fair share of existing grant dollars, then someone else is. That prospect alone makes us more even more determined to acquire as much as we can, as fast as we can, for as long as we can. While impossible to attend to every conceivable need associated with capital projects, there are other necessary and worthy projects which we will continue to advance. Progress, albeit slowed, continues on McHost Rd., which requires widening and other safety featured considerations. On-going discussion with DOTD on the future of Hwy. 64, the City’s primary east/ west traffic artery while under study, continues at a cautious pace. These two unique projects require parish and/or state financial assistance and authorization approval due to their particular designations(s). Sciortino and Moore to Marry

Julie Marie Sciortino, of Baton Rouge, and Ryan Lytle Moore, of Zachary, will marry on March 16, 2013 at a 6 p.m. ceremony at Hemingbough in St. Francisville. The bride-elect is the daughter of Marla and Joseph D. Sciortino of Baton Rouge. She is the granddaughter of Cleve and Bella Baham of Baton Rouge and the late Mr. and Mrs. Dominic Sciortino of White Castle.

The bride-elect is a graduate of St. Michael High School and attends OLOL Medical College. She will graduate in May 2013 to pursue a career as a registered nurse. Her fiancé is the son of Charles and Renee Moore of Zachary. He is the grandson of Richard and Peggy Moore of Baker, Glen and Gloria Shaw of Jarreau, Edward and Benda Willcutt of Slaughter and Dr. Sheila Moore of Zachary. He is a graduate of Zachary High School and is employed as a sonographer with Moore Sound Imaging.

Crawford and Weatherly Exchange Vows

Victoria Noel Crawford and Chase Jordan Weatherly, both of Central, were married Friday, August 31, 2012, at 7 p.m. at Jackson Presbyterian Church in Jackson, La. Caleb Crawford, brother of the bride, officiated.

The bride is the daughter of Larry and Vickie Crawford of Central. The groom is the son of Barry and Pam Weatherly of Central. The bride was attended by her matron of honor, Amanda McGraw, and her maid of honor, Brittany Castilaw. Bridesmaids were Faith Phillips, Paige Crawford, Lauren Mallett, Lexie Blackwell and Rachel Alain. Junior Bridesmaid was Kendal Crawford. Barrett is a native of Carthage, Ms. and is responsible for coordinating all aspects of nursing care for the unit, including patient satisfaction, staffing and physician relations. She has 21 years of health care experience. Barrett is a graduate of East Central Community College and Our Lady of the Lake School of Nursing. The Louisiana Bankers Association announced last week that the Bank of Zachary’s Executive Vice President Mark Marionneaux was elected councilman at large to the Association’s Education Council, its educational outreach arm. The Louisiana Bankers Education Council’s mission is to promote financial education among bankers and students throughout Louisiana. Their responsibilities include elementary school financial literacy through the Bank at School program, high school financial literacy through the Simply Banking program, education for middle management bankers, college freshman scholarships and raising money for the Louisiana Bankers Education Foundation, which funds the above programs.

2013 Relay for Life is Making Cancer History

This year’s Zachary/Baker Relay for Life is set for Friday, April 19 at the BREC Zachary Community Park off of Old Scenic Hwy. Not only does the evening provide an opportunity to support those in our community who have lost loved ones to cancer, but it also celebrates the survivors who fought—and continue to fight—this disease. Now is the time to get involved; register your team for this annual fundraiser benefiting the American Cancer Society. This year’s theme is “Making Cancer History.” Teams are encouraged to be creative when choosing their tent decorations and food items. Themes can be a favorite historical time period, event or person. Prizes will be awarded for the best decorated tent related to this year’s theme. Bonus points are given for incorporating the food being sold and/or the activity being presented. Festivities include a volleyball tournament, survivor dinner, opening and closing ceremonies as well as the touching luminaria ceremony. Softball/Baseball for Home Schoolers ‘Chief’ for a Day The Baton Rouge Home School Eagles is a home school sports organization that began this past year in the rural areas around Baton Rouge.The group is affiliated with the Association of Christian Educators of Louisiana (ACEL). Republican Women Plan 2013 Club Goals Capital City Republican Women 2013 officers are ready for the new year. Wanza H. Bell announced her theme: “Making Diversity a Priority for We are all Americans.” The group’s mission is motivating members in the GOP to stand up and recommit to the founding principles

Zachary Firefighter Receives a Veterans of Foreign Wars Award Each year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) selects an emergency services person, a law enforcement officer and a firefighter to receive the Louisiana State VFW Gold Medal. Justin Walker won 1st place for the 2012 VFW Outstanding Fireman of the Year award for the local division in Baker, Post #4224. Walker was then nominated to the state Veterans of Foreign Wars Department competition. banquet held in Alexandria. In a statement released last week, the Zachary Fire Department expressed its pride in Walker, who has been with the Department full-time since 2006. During the past six years, Walker demonstrated an outstanding work ethic and an unwavering positive attitude towards his fellow firefighters and citizens of the community, the statement said. At 17, Walker joined the Army National Guard, saying his decision to serve in the Guard and to become a firefighter was a direct result of the September 11 attacks. Justin completed basic training with the Army National Guard in 2004 at Fort Knox, Kentucky to become a 19D Calvary Scout (reconnaissance). In September 2004, he was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq where he conducted counter insurgency operations at Camp Justice for over a year. Five years later, Justin was de-

ployed again to Baghdad, where he conducted protective services detail missions. In 2008, the State of Louisiana awarded Justin the “Soldier of the Year” distinction. After joining the Army National Guard in 2004, Justin also became a volunteer firefighter for the West Feliciana Fire District. He has also been employed part-time with that District for six years and in January of 2009, received two life saves for pulling two unconscious victims out of a burning home. He was awarded a Medal of Valor for heroic and selfless actions. “Justin is a hero in the eyes of the people he saved and is a perfect example of the courage and heroism firefighters in our community display each day,” said the statement. “Justin has succeeded at serving both our country and the Zachary community, and the Zachary Fire Department is very proud to have Justin Walker as a member of this organization.”

ZCSD Special Olympics Students Strut at Field Day

Students with special needs from the Zachary Community School District held their track and field time trials Friday morning at Bronco Field. The goal of the time trials was to record accurate scores and distances for entry into the Special Olympics Capital Area Track and Field Meet, which will be held February 27 and 28 at the Louisiana School for the Deaf from

9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Trial events included the 50 meter race, standing long jump and softball throw. Students were divided into groups based on their respective schools: Zachary Elementary, Copper Mill, Northwestern Middle and Zachary High.

The City of Zachary is now authorized to bond its own project funds following last year’s voter approval of a proposed ordinance allowing for such. The potential for future funding needs and infrastructure revitalization projects have been greatly enhanced by that authorization. Zachary is blessed with a strong economy. Revenues still exceed expenditures, and local government continues to enjoy a healthy surplus. Prudent spending and a “pay as you go” business approach has enabled the successes we have enjoyed these first two years in office.

Registration Opens for Miss Zachary Pageant

Part of the annual Zachary Arts and Music Festival (Zfest), The Miss Zachary Pageant is open to girl’s ages 0-23. The pageant is a “Sunday Best” pageant (no glitz) and interested individuals have nine divisions to choose from. The pageant takes place on March 16 and dress for the pageant is as follows: ages 0-13, nice Sunday dress; ages 14-16 a party dress; ages 17-20 prom dress. Awards will be given in each division and all participants who receive an award will take part in the fashion show on Sunday March 24. A special award will be presented at this time. Miss Queen and Teen Queen will represent Zachary throughout the year and all queens will appear in the Zachary Christmas parade and Zfest.

The Life of Jesus Christ Production March 21-23, 10 a.m. For over 2,000 years, this story has been told to generations; and for the second year in a row this Peter Huntley version of the play will come to life at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. The three-hour play depicts the complete story of Jesus’ life and resurrection. The outdoor production of The Life of Jesus Christ will be performed by a cast of offenders from the Louisiana State Penitentiary and the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women and will be presented on the grounds of the Louisiana State Penitentiary. All aspects of this event have been orchestrated by offenders: script adaptation, direction, and casting, music, costumes and set design. Live animals will be used in the production.
