The 42nd Annual Audubon Pilgrimage, to be held March 15–17, celebrates a southern spring in St. Francisville, the glorious garden spot of Louisiana’s English Plantation Country. For over four decades the sponsoring West Feliciana Historical Society has thrown open the doors of significant historic structures to commemorate artist-naturalist John James Audubon’s stay as he painted a number of his famous bird folios and tutored young Eliza Pirrie of Oakley. Features of the 2013 Audubon Pilgrimage include a historic townhouse (Evergreenzine) and three country plantations (Wakefield, Beechwood and Catalpa), plus Rosedown and Audubon State Historic Sites, Afton Villa Gardens and three 19th cen-

Cancer Survivors Invited to Honor ‘Amazing Graces’

For a cancer survivor the journey can be difficult, filled with waiting, pain, fear and challenges. But it can also be one of everyday miracles filled with love, peace, hope and the grace and power to carry one through the battle of a lifetime. The theme for the 2013 Zachary Relay for Life Cancer Survivor Prayer Breakfast is “Amazing Graces.” Cancer survivors of all faiths who are currently coping with diagnosis or treatments as well as survivors of many years are invited with their caregivers to a special prayer breakfast to be held

on Saturday, April 6 at 9 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Zachary. Admission is free thanks to donations from generous sponsors; however, seating is limited. Call 225-4136941 to reserve a seat for a cancer survivor and caregiver. Dr. Les Colvin, associate pastor at First Baptist Church in Zachary will speak to the group about his family’s journey of faith and grace as it relates to their experience with cancer. Dr. Colvin earned a Master of Religious Education degree at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and a

Doctor of Ministry at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. His passion for ministry is to develop “mature disciples,” encouraging the body of Christ in their walk with God. Father Jeff Bayhi from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Zachary will lead the group in prayer along with Pastor Greg Davis from Zachary United Methodist Church. Both of these spiritual leaders have participated in previous years and will be sharing their faith again with the group. Cherie Gravois, a breast cancer survivor and organizer of the

breakfast said, “We want to provide a morning of fellowship for cancer survivors of all faiths and their caregivers as we fight cancer with faith and live with hope and grace. This year’s theme, Amazing Graces, was inspired by the lyrics, ‘How precious did that Grace appear, the hour I first believed, through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come, ‘Tis Grace that brought me safe this far and Grace will lead me home. The Lord has promised good to me. His word my hope secures.’ Grace and blessings in the midst of the crisis of cancer bring peace and hope. This is our seventh year organizing this special event and we look forward to it every year.” This event is held in conjunction with the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life to be held on Friday, April 19 at BREC Zachary Community Park. The Cancer Survivor Dinner is from 6–7 p.m. and the opening ceremonies will start at 7 p.m. This fun-filled event is designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported and that one day, cancer will be eliminated. The breakfast is made possible thanks to generous donations from Lane Regional Medical Center, Zachary Rotary, Jack Burk Allstate and personal donations.

Pirrie. Catalpa Plantation was the home of Willie Fort, who was so taken with Eliza’s beautiful Bowman granddaughters that he married, not one, but two of them. The Historic District around Royal Street will be filled during the day with the happy sounds of costumed children singing and dancing the Maypole; in the evening as candles flicker and fireflies flit among the ancient moss-draped live oaks, there is no place more inviting for a leisurely stroll. Friday evening features an Audubon skit in Market Hall (5:30 to 6 p.m.), old-time hymn singing at the United Methodist Church (6 to 7 p.m.), graveyard tours at Grace Episcopal Cemetery (last tour begins

The town’s early Market Hall, c. 1819, hosts the popular antiques show and sale, while the newly renovated Temple Sinai will showcase the works of several Louisiana artists. Tour houses are open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year’s carefully selected features vividly illustrate how many early families were closely related by blood or marriage, thus intertwining their heritage and homes in the fascinating fabric of Feliciana history. Martha Barrow Turnbull of Rosedown Plantation had a daughter named Sarah who would marry the son of Oakley’s Eliza Pirrie, whose first husband was Martha’s brother and whose second husband was the Reverend William R. Bowman of Grace Church. Wakefield Plantation and Beechwood were both part of early settler Alexander Stirling’s immense land grant holdings, and Stirling is buried in the Beechwood cemetery beside his wife Ann Alston, her sister Lucretia Alston Young girls dancing around the Maypole, a celebraPirrie of Oakley and Lu- tion of spring, is one of the traditional highlights of the cretia’s daughter Eliza annual Audubon Pilgrimage.

3rd Place Combine Performance Earns Attention from Colleges

During the weekend of February 23, Zachary High School junior running back Forrest Town represented Zachary and the state of Louisiana at the Nike SPARQ Football Combine in Houston, Tx., placing third overall with a SPARQ rating of 113.28. Over 1,400 athletes from all across the country competed in the 40 yd. dash, vertical jump, pro agility shuttle and power ball toss. The strength of Forrest’s score came from his amazing, 40 in. vertical leap, followed closely by his laser-timed 40 yd. dash of 4.55s, 4.28s pro agility, and 37 ft. power ball toss. Forrest measured in at 5’11” and 187 lbs. This past season at ZHS,

Forrest shared the running back position with outstanding senior Boston Scott, but still managed to accumulate 945 yds. of offense and eight touchdowns. The highlight of his season came in the game against the Walker Wildcats where he combined rushing and receiving for 219 yds. and a touchdown. Forrest will be playing running back and safety for the 5A Broncos in the upcoming season. With the latest national media attention, Forrest has been getting some college attention from the likes of Missouri, Tulane, W. Virginia, Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Troy and Penn.

The Zachary High School marketing and accounting programs were recently awarded grants of $4,600 and $1,795 from the Marketing Education Retail Alliance (MERA). MERA was created in 2000 and is administered by the Louisiana Retailers Association. MERA grants are funded through the Louisiana Department of Economic Development under the authority of LA R.S. 47:318. These grants provide funds for students to attend leadership training and the state DECA conference and training. These sorts of opportunities help students to improve skills through customer service marketing activities as well as advancing students’ abilities in accounting principles. Students work with marketing and accounting simulations that improve their abilities to provide better customer service, product knowl-

edge and follow-up procedures. They also compete in various marketing-related competitive events at the state conference. The students then apply what they learn in roleplay scenarios that carry over into real-life workplaces. Upon completion of the training, the students will complete accounting simulations and take the National Customer Service Examination. The significance of the National Professional Certification in Customer Service affects everyone–the school, students and employers. It validates that learning took place in the classroom and that class objectives meet industry needs, including rigor and relevance because these certification standards are set by the industry. Students leave the class with an industry-developed credential that demonstrates their potential to future employers.

Three members of the Northwestern Middle School golf team recently competed in the U.S. Kids Golf Winter Tour held in southeast Louisiana. The tour championship, held at Money Hill Golf Course in Abita Springs, attracted golfers from throughout Louisiana and Mississippi ages 5-14. Kylie O’Brien (pictured center), competing in the girls 10–11-year-old age group, performed very well by shooting 48 over 9 holes to finish in second place in both the tour champi-

onship and the U.S. Kids Tour seasonlong points race. Brady Bennett (right) took first place honors in the 13–14-year-old age group by shooting a season-best score of 75. The win allowed Brady to also secure the Player of the Year Award for his age division.
